To assess whether (household) food insecurity, access to a regular medical doctor, and sense of community belonging mediate the relationship between mood and/or anxiety disorders and self-rated general health.We used six annual cycles of the Canadian Community Health Survey, including Canadian adults aged 18-59 years, between 2011 and 2016. Mediation models, adjusted for key determinants of health, were based on a series of weighted logistic regression models. The Sobel products of coefficients approach was used to estimate the indirect effect, and bootstrapping to estimate uncertainty.The annual (weighted) prevalence of mood and/or anxiety disorders increased from 11.3% (2011) to 13.2% (2016). Across the 6 years, 23.9-27.7% of individuals with mood and/or anxiety disorders reported fair/poor self-rated health as compared with 4.9-6.5% of those without mood and/or anxiety disorders (p0.001). Similarly, the 7.2-8.9% of the population reporting fair/poor self-rated health were disproportionately represented among individuals reporting food insecurity (21.1-26.2%, p0.001) and a weak sense of community belonging (10.0-12.2%, p0.001). A significantly lower prevalence of poor self-rated health was observed among respondents reporting having access to a regular medical doctor in 2012, 2015, and 2016. In 2016, sense of community belonging and food insecurity significantly mediated the effect of mood and/or anxiety disorders on self-rated general health. Access to a regular medical doctor did not mediate this relationship.Efficient policies that address food insecurity and sense of community belonging are needed to decrease the mental health burden and improve health satisfaction of Canadians.RéSUMé: OBJECTIF: Déterminer si l’insécurité alimentaire (du ménage), l’accès à un médecin traitant et le sentiment d’appartenance à la communauté modèrent le lien entre les troubles anxieux et/ou de l’humeur et la santé générale autoévaluée. MéTHODE: Nous avons utilisé six cycles annuels (2011 à 2016) de l’Enquête sur la santé dans les collectivités canadiennes incluant des Canadiens adultes de 18 à 59 ans. Nos modèles de modération, ajustés selon les principaux déterminants de la santé, reposaient sur une série de modèles de régression logistique pondérés. Nous avons utilisé l’approche des produits des coefficients de Sobel pour estimer les effets indirects, et l’autoamorçage pour estimer l’incertitude. RéSULTATS: La prévalence annuelle (pondérée) des troubles anxieux et/ou de l’humeur a augmenté, passant de 11,3 % en 2011 à 13,2 % en 2016. Sur la période de six ans, 23,9 à 27,7 % des personnes ayant des troubles anxieux et/ou de l’humeur ont déclaré avoir une santé moyenne/mauvaise, contre 4,9 à 6,5 % des personnes n’ayant pas de troubles anxieux et/ou de l’humeur (p0,001). De même, les 7,2 à 8,9 % de la population ayant déclaré avoir une santé moyenne/mauvaise étaient disproportionnellement représentés chez les personnes disant être en situation d’insécurité alimentaire (21,1-26,2 %, p0,001) et avoir un faible sentiment d’appartenance à la communauté (10,0-12,2 %, p0,001). Une prévalence significativement plus faible de mauvaise santé autoévaluée a été observée chez les répondants ayant dit avoir accès à un médecin traitant en 2012, 2015 et 2016. En 2016, le sentiment d’appartenance à la communauté et l’insécurité alimentaire modéraient de façon significative l’effet des troubles anxieux et/ou de l’humeur sur la santé générale autoévaluée. L’accès à un médecin traitant ne modérait pas ce lien. CONCLUSION: Des politiques efficaces pour aborder l’insécurité alimentaire et le sentiment d’appartenance à la communauté sont nécessaires pour réduire le fardeau des troubles mentaux et améliorer la satisfaction des Canadiens face à leur santé.

IFNγ is traditionally known as a proinflammatory cytokine with diverse roles in antimicrobial and antitumor immunity. Yet, findings regarding its sources and functions during the regeneration process following a sterile injury are conflicting. Here, we show that natural killer (NK) cells are the main source of IFNγ in regenerating muscle. Beyond this cell population, IFNγ production is limited to a small population of T cells. We further show that NK cells do not play a major role in muscle regeneration following an acute injury or in dystrophic mice. Surprisingly, the absence of IFNγ per se also has no effect on muscle regeneration following an acute injury. However, the role of IFNγ is partially unmasked when TNFα is also neutralized, suggesting a compensatory mechanism. Using transgenic mice, we showed that conditional inhibition of IFNGR1 signaling in muscle stem cells or fibro-adipogenic progenitors does not play a major role in muscle regeneration. In contrast to common belief, we found that IFNγ is not present in the early inflammatory phase of the regeneration process but rather peaks when macrophages are acquiring an anti-inflammatory phenotype. Further transcriptomic analysis suggests that IFNγ cooperates with TNFα to regulate the transition of macrophages from pro- to anti-inflammatory states. The absence of the cooperative effect of these cytokines on macrophages, however, does not result in significant regeneration impairment likely due to the presence of other compensatory mechanisms. Our findings support the arising view of IFNγ as a pleiotropic inflammatory regulator rather than an inducer of the inflammatory response.

In the framework of the III level Seismic Microzonation of the Pieve del Grappa municipality (Treviso, NE Italy), three paleoseismological trenches were dug, in order to investigate activity and capacity of the Crespano del Grappa backthrust.The study area is located in the Veneto foothills, where the Plio-Quaternary external front of the Eastern Southern Alps (Castellarin and Cantelli, 2000) presently propagates with a 2-3 mm/y velocity towards the south (Serpelloni et al., 2016). The external front is composed of a series of arcuated WSW-ENE striking, S verging structures (Galadini et al, 2005). Moreover, the area is characterized by a medium-to-low seismicity with only one M>6 earthquake during the last millennium: the 1695 Asolo event, Mw 6.45 (Rovida et al., 2016).Regarding the structural framework, the study area is located between the Bassano-Vittorio Veneto Thrust to the north and the Bassano-Cornuda Thrust to the south. The investigated tectonic structure, i.e. the Bassano-Cornuda backthrust, is a N-verging E-W striking reverse structure. Moving from east to the west, it widely crops out near the Castelcucco village, causing a hundred meters displacement in the Miocene Molasse (Braga, 1970). In particular in Crespano village the thrust is responsible of an about 10 m vertical throw in the Quaternary alluvial conglomerates of Lastego river (Parinetto, 1987). Because of the urbanization, the paleoseismological trenches were realized at the eastern (Col Canil) and western (San Vito) borders of the village. In the former case, the trench cut through thick colluvial deposits that probably buried an abandoned valley. Differently, the second and the third trenches affected wide coalescent LGM alluvial fans, which border the southern slope of Mt. Grappa.The results testify an intense Pleistocene-Holocene deformation of the Crespano del Grappa backthrust. Particularly, active deformation evidence deals with:back-tilting of the Holocene colluvial units; pronounced polyphasic liquefaction episodes, locally completely altering the sedimentary structures of colluvial units; a wide damage zone in the proximity of the morphological scarp and associated with the peak of the induced polarization. This observation testifies that the Crespano del Grappa backthrust reached the surface and displaced topography in the past, probably at the occurrence of one or more events which generated the paleoliquefaction effects; the 3-4 m displacement of the LGM alluvial fan deposits. Concerning the age of the deformation, the dating of the involved units suggests a post LGM activation, probably recent-to-historical. REFERENCESBraga GP, 1970. Material examined Holotype UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ��� ♂; Wyoming, Uinta Co., 8 mi. SE of Evanston; 7100 ft a.s.l.; 30 Jul.���11 Aug. 1979; S. and J. Peck leg.; sage-grass, riparian, carrion; DEBU debu01086083. Description BODY. Length: 1.8���1.9 mm. Eye height 1.0 �� genal height. Head with 3 interfrontal setae and 5 small setae along inner margin of orbital plate. Gena with 2 strong setae and 4���5 smaller setulae. Acrostichal setulae in 4���6 rows. Costagial seta length unknown (broken on both sides of holotype); second costal sector shorter than third (35:40). Length of M 1 between crossveins dm-cu and r-m 4.0�� dm-cu; CuA 1 stub vein ~5.0 �� M 1 stub vein. Male mid femur basally with 9 strong setae present in ovoid cluster. Male mid tibia with ventral comb of 12���13 robust setae on apical ⅔. MALE ABDOMEN (Figs 2���3). Posterior margin of sternite 5 with pair of small teeth on each side of shallow emargination; emargination extending �� length and �� width of sternite 5. Transverse part of sternite 6 weakly arcuate. Epandrium swollen, wider than preceding portion of abdomen (denuded on holotype); subanal plate incomplete. Posterior lobe of surstylus elongate, with apex and posterior margin heavily setose; anterobasal lobe broadly rounded and laminate, with distal triangular projection. Cercus ovoid. Postgonite elongate with apex acute. Dorsal sclerite of distiphallus (Fig. 21 B���C) with several small swellings along length and extending beyond apex of acrophallus. Female Unknown. Remarks Rudolfina tumida sp. nov. is distinctive for the uniquely swollen epandrium and large surstylus. Remarks Rudolfina digitata, the second species to be described in this originally Palaearctic genus, is widely distributed in western North America and also occurs in a few eastern North American sites, including Mount Washington, New Hampshire. Mount Washington is known to have other species with disjunct western Cordilleran and eastern Appalachian distributions (e.g., Oeneis melissa (Fabricius, 1775) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae)), and the apparently disjunct population of R. digitata there suggests it may have once had a more extensive range. The other New Hampshire locality is also one of two known localities for the rare monotypic sphaerocerid genus Volumosina Roh��ček & Marshall, 2017, otherwise known from one old growth forest in Ontario. Redescription BODY. Colour light to dark brown. Length 1.4���2.3 mm. HEAD. With 3���5 interfrontal setae (of equal length or the foremost shorter), 1 (rarely 2) inclinate orbital setula and 4���10 small orbital setulae inside and below 2 strong, exclinate orbital setae; ocellar triangle with pair of strong setae and 3���5 additional small setulae; outer vertical seta strong, exclinate; inner vertical seta inclinate; occipital and paravertical setae inclinate, well-developed; postocellar seta inclinate, weakly developed. Eye-to-gena height ratio variable between species (1.5:1 to 3.5:1). Vibrissa strong. Gena with 1���2 strong subvibrissal setae and 4���9 smaller setulae. THORAX. Surface pruinose. Sternites and tergites well sclerotized and setose (posterior and lateral margins more densely setose). Male sternite 4 usually simple (rarely densely setose medially). MALE ABDOMEN. Posterior margin of sternite 5 with lobe on each side of medial emargination (shape and size of emargination and lobes vary among species). Transverse (ventral) portion of sternite 6 narrow; straight or weakly arcuate. Ring sclerite (in the right membrane of segment 7, possibly derived from a spiracle) large and distinct. Epandrium setose, often with larger setae lateral to anal opening, and with right anteroventral corner drawn out into a finger-like process that extends to the hypandrium. Male cercus usually distinct, fused with the epandrium (reduced and obscured beneath the epandrium in a few species; e.g., R. pilosa sp. nov., R. remiforma sp. nov.). Hypandrium (Fig. 3B) Y-shaped with emarginate posteromedial extension; hypandrial arms posteriorly deeply bilobed posteriorly, with lateral lobe articulating with the epandrium and the medial lobe articulating with posterolateral corner of hypandrium. Pregonite distinct, small, near anterior base of postgonite. Postgonite generally simple and slender, with 3���4 setulae on anterior margin but modified in some species; ejaculatory apodeme small and finger-like, with small globular sperm pump, usually close to the basiphallus (easily lost during dissection); basiphallus simple (without an epiphallus); distiphallus with distinct elongate dorsal sclerite; acrophallus with dorsolateral lobes and a single ventral sac (often reduced). FEMALE ABDOMEN. Tergite 8 apparently tripartite, with two lateral triangular sclerites and a medial sclerite (reduced in several species). Epiproct bare except for usual pair of small setae and a few scattered setulae, strongly sclerotized, and fused laterally with cerci (except in R. cavernicola). Cercus with single flattened apical seta. Sternite 7 variable. Sternite 8 weak, transverse, covered in small setulae; pair of small, bispinose plates along posterior margin. Hypoproct very narrow, forming horseshoe-shaped band immediately below the cerci. Spermathecae (1 pair + 1 single) generally disc-shaped or lenticular, with thin, long sclerotized ducts. Related and similar genera All species of Rudolfina will key out to ��� Rudolfia ��� in the key to Nearctic Sphaeroceridae by Marshall & Richards (1987) but they will key out as ��� Archiceroptera genus complex, in part��� at couplet 72 in the key of Marshall & Buck (2010) to Neotropical Sphaeroceridae. This previous treatment reflected uncertainty about the limits between Rudolfina and the many undescribed Neotropical species in the Archiceroptera genus complex. The Archiceroptera complex is part of a larger group of Limosininae (including Aptilotella Duda, 1924, Archiceroptera Papp, 1977, Bitheca Marshall, 1987, Bromeoloecia Spuler, 1924, Pterogramma Spuler, 1924 and Robustagramma Marshall & Cui, 2005) characterized by an unusual process extending medially from the lower right margin of the epandrium to the hypandrium. The relationships within this group need further study but the morphological analysis by Paiero (2017) suggests that Rudolfina is closely related to Bromeloecia. Within this group, Rudolfina resembles Archiceroptera in characters of the female epiproct and cercus. However, in Archiceroptera the epiproct is completely desclerotized medially (anteriorly sclerotized in Rudolfina), the cercus is separate from the epiproct and has a partially concave inner margin, and sternite 8 is divided into a pair of elongate lateral sclerites without the paired setulose sclerites found in Rudolfina. Archiceroptera species also differ from Rudolfina in having M 1 extending as a pseudovein to the wing margin, CuA 1 rarely with a distinct stub vein, the male cercus free from the epandrium and with a distinct ventral process, and (in many, but not all species) five or more dorsal mid tibial setae and two or more inclinate orbital setulae. Biology Roh��ček (1987) recorded R. rozkosnyi from dung and occasionally from mud and decaying vegetation, but most of the new species considered here were collected in dung or carrion traps. Larvae remain unknown. Distribution Rudolfina has a mostly western Nearctic montane distribution, with high endemism in the southwest and the mountains of Mexico (Sierra Madre del Sur, Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra Madre de Chiapas). Two widely separated species occur in the Palaearctic region (R. rozkosnyi and R. zhangi) and one species (R. exuberata sp. nov.) is widespread at low elevations from the southern United States to South America. Other than R. exuberata sp. nov., no true species of Rudolfina are known from south of Guatemala. Other Neotropical species previously treated as Rudolfina are discussed below. Results of the phylogenetic analysis Twenty-seven most parsimonious trees were generated, summarized here as a strict consensus tree (Fig. 5) and a majority rules consensus tree (Fig. 6). Characters were optimized on one of the equal length trees (Fig. 7) which was selected based on the recovery of several groups supported by putatively higher weight characters. Shared male genitalic morphology supported a close relationship of Rudolfina bucki sp nov. with R. megepandria sp. nov. and R. tumida sp. nov. with [R. rozkosnyi + R. digitata + R. zhangi]. The combined elongation of the epiproct and female cercus suggests that R. newtoni sp. nov. is closely related to [R. exuberata sp. nov. + R. pauca sp. nov. + R. remiforma sp. nov.], although the form of the epiproct in R. newtoni sp. nov. is apparently intermediate between the strongly elongated form found in the R. exuberata clade and the shorter epiproct of other Rudolfina. All trees recovered R. cavernicola as a sister taxon to the remaining species, which form a monophyletic group characterized by the fusion of the female cercus with the posterolateral corner of the epiproct, the elongation of the medial part of tergite 8 and by characters of the male cercus and surstylus. This tree suggests a New World origin for Rudolfina. Within Rudolfina excluding R. cavernicola, R. rozkosnyi, R. digitata and R. tumida sp. nov. appear to be a basal grade predating the origin of a clade comprising the Mexican-Guatemalan species. These four species all have a laminate lobe on the surstylus, apparently derived from the simple laminate margin of R. cavernicola (absent in other species). The largely Mexican-Guatemalan clade can be recognized by the simple, rounded anterior lobe of the male surstylus and the absence of dorsal swellings on the dorsal sclerite of the distiphallus. The R. exuberata group (including R. exuberata sp. nov., R. remiforma sp. nov. and R. pauca sp. nov.) is characterized by a small elongate male cercus, tulip-shaped epiproct, and reduction of the female cercus. Rudolfina remiforma sp. nov. and R. pauca sp. nov. are known from only a few localities at higher elevations, as is typical of the genus, but the widespread R. exuberata sp. nov. occurs at much lower elevations than its more localized congeners. The genus Rudolfina Rohacek, 1987 is revised and redefined with the description of the following nine new species, all from the New World: R. bucki sp. nov. (Mexico), R. exuberata sp. nov. (widespread, from USA to Brazil), R. howdeni sp. nov. (Mexico), R. megepandria sp. nov. (Mexico), R. newtoni sp. nov. (Mexico), R. pauca sp. nov. (Guatemala, Mexico), R. pilosa sp. nov. (Mexico), R. remiforma sp. nov. (Mexico) and R. tumida sp. nov. (Mexico, USA). Rudolfina is compared to closely related genera in the Archiceroptera genus complex, which in turn is recognized as part of a large, mostly Neotropical clade including Robustagramma Marshall & Cui, 2005, Pterogramma Spuler, 1924, Aptilotella Duda, 1924, Bitheca Marshall, 1987, Bromeloecia Spuler, 1924 and Archiceroptera Papp, 1977.

Chronic bacterial infections of the lung are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in cystic fibrosis patients. Tracking bacterial evolution during chronic infections can provide insights into how host selection pressures—including immune responses and therapeutic interventions—shape bacterial genomes. We carried out genomic and phenotypic analyses of 215 serially collected Burkholderia cenocepacia isolates from 16 cystic fibrosis patients, spanning a period of 2–20 yr and a broad range of epidemic lineages. Systematic phenotypic tests identified longitudinal bacterial series that manifested progressive changes in liquid media growth, motility, biofilm formation, and acute insect virulence, but not in mucoidy. The results suggest that distinct lineages follow distinct evolutionary trajectories during lung infection. Pan-genome analysis identified 10,110 homologous gene clusters present only in a subset of strains, including genes restricted to different molecular types. Our phylogenetic analysis based on 2148 orthologous gene clusters from all isolates is consistent with patient-specific clades. This suggests that initial colonization of patients was likely by individual strains, followed by subsequent diversification. Evidence of clonal lineages shared by some patients was observed, suggesting inter-patient transmission. We observed recurrent gene losses in multiple independent longitudinal series, including complete loss of Chromosome III and deletions on other chromosomes. Recurrently observed loss-of-function mutations were associated with decreases in motility and biofilm formation. Together, our study provides the first comprehensive genome-phenome analyses of B. cenocepacia infection in cystic fibrosis lungs and serves as a valuable resource for understanding the genomic and phenotypic underpinnings of bacterial evolution.

Docentes do ensino superior, em todas as áreas do conhecimento, lidam rotineiramente com dificuldades e desafios inerentes à constante evolução tecnológica. Esse processo faz com que o exercício da docência tenha de evoluir de forma contínua, pois o professor não pode prescindir de estratégias de aproximação com o repertório de mídias e plataformas dos estudantes. Por um lado, as rotinas na sala de aula (ou em quaisquer outros espaços acadêmicos) exigem que o gap geracional entre mestres e alunos seja constantemente superado, para que as linguagens e plataformas dos mais jovens, em permanente mutação, sejam incorporadas ao repertório daqueles que têm a função de sistematizar e transmitir (com todas as ressalvas deste verbo no contexto pedagógico) o conhecimento. Em outro plano, há de se considerar a oferta de ferramentas tecnológicas de ensino ao próprio docente, que deve manter-se atualizado e em sintonia com as novas facilidades. Com base nesses dois pontos principais, este artigo traz uma visão introdutória sobre o tema a partir da experiência de dois docentes do curso de Jornalismo da Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, em São Paulo (Brasil).

ObjectivesAs people living with HIV (PLWH) live longer, morbidity and mortality from non-AIDS comorbidities have emerged as major concerns. Our objective was to compare prevalence trends and age at diagnosis of nine chronic age-associated comorbidities between individuals living with and without HIV.Design and settingThis population-based cohort study used longitudinal cohort data from all diagnosed antiretroviral-treated PLWH and 1:4 age-sex-matched HIV-negative individuals in British Columbia, Canada.ParticipantsThe study included 8031 antiretroviral-treated PLWH and 32 124 HIV-negative controls (median age 40 years, 82% men). Eligible participants were ≥19 years old and followed for ≥1 year during 2000 to 2012.Primary and secondary outcome measuresThe presence of non-AIDS-defining cancers, diabetes, osteoarthritis, hypertension, Alzheimer’s and/or non-HIV-related dementia, cardiovascular, kidney, liver and lung diseases were identified from provincial administrative databases. Paintedhand Mudbug (Lacunicambarus polychromatus (Thoma, Jezerinac & Simon 2005)) (Decapoda: Cambaridae) was recently discovered at three locations in Windsor, Ontario. These represent the first reports of this burrowing crayfish in Canada. iNaturalist, a nature app and website designed to record photo-based observations of plants and animals, was instrumental in facilitating this discovery. We discuss the importance of collaborative platforms, such as iNaturalist, for linking naturalists and citizen scientists to taxonomic experts around the globe.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2018-07-18 We investigated the eastern corner of northeastern Italy, where a system of NW-SE-trending dextral strike-slip faults of western Slovenia intersects the south-verging fold and thrust belt of the eastern Southern Alps. The area suffered the largest earthquakes of the region, among which are the 1511 (Mw 6.3) event and the two major shocks of the 1976 seismic sequence, with Mw= 6.4 and 6.1. The Colle Villano thrust and the Borgo Faris-Cividale strike-slip fault have been here first analyzed by interpreting industrial seismic lines and then by performing morphotectonic and paleoseismological analyses. These different datasets indicate that the two structures define an active, coherent transpressive fault system that was activated twice in the past two millennia, with the last event occurring around the 15th-17th century. The chronological information and the location of the investigated fault system suggest its activation during the 1511 earthquake. Study of all flies (Diptera) collected for one year from a four-hectare (150 x 266 meter) patch of cloud forest at 1,600 meters above sea level at Zurquí de Moravia, San José Province, Costa Rica (hereafter referred to as Zurquí), revealed an astounding 4,332 species. This amounts to more than half the number of named species of flies for all of Central America. Specimens were collected with two Malaise traps running continuously and with a wide array of supplementary collecting methods for three days of each month. All morphospecies from all 73 families recorded were fully curated by technicians before submission to an international team of 59 taxonomic experts for identification. Overall, a Malaise trap on the forest edge captured 1,988 species or 51% of all collected dipteran taxa (other than of Phoridae, subsampled only from this and one other Malaise trap). A Malaise trap in the forest sampled 906 species. Of other sampling methods, the combination of four other Malaise traps and an intercept trap, aerial/hand collecting, 10 emergence traps, and four CDC light traps added the greatest number of species to our inventory. This complement of sampling methods was an effective combination for retrieving substantial numbers of species of Diptera. Comparison of select sampling methods (considering 3,487 species of non-phorid Diptera) provided further details regarding how many species were sampled by various methods. Comparison of species numbers from each of two permanent Malaise traps from Zurquí with those of single Malaise traps at each of Tapantí and Las Alturas, 40 and 180 km distant from Zurquí respectively, suggested significant species turnover. Comparison of the greater number of species collected in all traps from Zurquí did not markedly change the degree of similarity between the three sites, although the actual number of species shared did increase. Comparisons of the total number of named and unnamed species of Diptera from four hectares at Zurquí is equivalent to 51% of all flies named from Central America, greater than all the named fly fauna of Colombia, equivalent to 14% of named Neotropical species and equal to about 2.7% of all named Diptera worldwide. Clearly the number of species of Diptera in tropical regions has been severely underestimated and the actual number may surpass the number of species of Coleoptera. Various published extrapolations from limited data to estimate total numbers of species of larger taxonomic categories (e.g., Hexapoda, Arthropoda, Eukaryota, etc.) are highly questionable, and certainly will remain uncertain until we have more exhaustive surveys of all and diverse taxa (like Diptera) from multiple tropical sites. Morphological characterization of species in inventories provides identifications placed in the context of taxonomy, phylogeny, form, and ecology. DNA barcoding species is a valuable tool to estimate species numbers but used alone fails to provide a broader context for the species identified.

Here we report the intensive inventory of a four-hectare tropical cloud forest in Costa Rica for one year, which yielded 4332 species of Diptera, providing the first verifiable basis for diversity of a major group of insects at a single site in the tropics. In total 73 families were present, all of which were studied to the species level, providing potentially complete coverage of all families of the order likely to be present at the site. Even so, extrapolations based on our data indicate that with further sampling, the actual total for the site could be closer to 8000 species. Efforts to completely sample a site, although resource-intensive and time-consuming, are needed to better ground estimations of world biodiversity based on limited sampling. This thesis has two parts. The first part investigates the relationships between the Archiceroptera genus complex and other members of the Limosininae (Diptera: Sphaeroceridae). A focus is placed on the relationships within the larger epandrial process group, which contains Bitheca, Bromeloecia, Pterogramma, Aptilotella, and Robustagramma, along with Archiceroptera, Rudolfina and several previously unplaced species groups. Molecular and morphological data sets provide the first phylogeny of the group, and were used to support the inclusion of several unplaced species groups within Rudolfina and Archiceroptera, while one new genus is described. Pectinosina gen. nov. includes two species: P. prominens (Duda), previously placed in Rudolfina, and P. carro n. sp. The second part of the thesis deals with revisions of Archiceroptera Papp and Rudolfina Roháček. Rudolfina now includes 13 described species, nine of which are newly described here (R. bucki, R. exuberata, R. howdeni, R. megepandria, R. pauca, R. pilosa, R. newtoni, R. remiforma, and R. tumida). Archiceroptera now includes 29 species, of which 27 are newly described here (A. adamas, A. addenda, A. barberi, A. basilia, A. bilobata, A. bisetosus, A. braziliensis, A. brevivilla, A. browni, A. caliga, A. calligraphia, A. cobolorum, A. crenulata, A. curvivilla, A. dolabra, A. llama, A. maniba, A. masoni, A. megacercus, A. megavilla, A. mexicorona, A. mitarakai, A. paracercus, A. pussula, A. ternum, A. triclavus, and A. uncinata).
