The article discusses the increasing partisanship in the American public education system. Historically, education was a topic with broad support and was relatively insulated from partisan politics. However, several factors have contributed to the politicization of education, including declining faith in experts and institutions, a generational split in views, a shift in the understanding of the purpose of public education, and the push for school choice and privatization. Grassroots coalitions are now organizing to push back against attacks on public education and to advocate for schools that serve all children. [Extracted from the article]

The article explores the concept of democratic peace theory, which suggests that democracies are less likely to go to war with each other. It discusses the historical influence of this theory on U.S. foreign policy and the role of influential figures in promoting democracy as a means to peace. The article also acknowledges that conflicts can still arise between liberal states and authoritarian ones, and that democratic peace theory has its critics. It concludes by discussing the current global political landscape and the potential for a new cold war between democracies and autocracies. [Extracted from the article]

Science has been an incredibly powerful and revolutionary force. However, it is not clear whether science is suited to performance under pressure; generally, science achieves best in its usual comfort zone of patience, caution, and slowness. But, if science is organized knowledge and acts as a guiding force for making informed decisions, it is important to understand how science and scientists perform as a reliable and valuable institution in a global crisis. This paper provides insights and reflections based on the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic and from an analytical perspective. In particular, we analyze aspects such as speed, transparency, trust, data sharing, scientists in the political arena, and the psychology of scientists—all of which are areas inviting more detailed investigations by future studies conducting systematic empirical studies. COUNTRIES , *POLITICAL scientists - Abstract
The article discusses the role of the United Nations (UN) in shaping the current political map of the world. It explores the idea that if the UN were to disappear, the geopolitical status quo could change. The author highlights the incomplete history of the UN and introduces a book called "Building States" by Eva-Maria Muschik, which examines the work of the UN Secretariat in creating the contemporary nation-state system. The book argues that the Secretariat played a crucial role in legitimizing independent statehood and international oversight as solutions to political unrest after World War II. It also explores themes of autonomy and development within the UN. The article suggests that understanding the history of the UN is important for comprehending the current global challenges. To foster the responsible development and governance of CRISPR, it is important to understand how agricultural communities perceive and discuss this technology. This study conducted a content analysis of 529 articles from 53 diverse agricultural news publications across sectors and U.S. regions between 2012 and 2022. We analyzed how CRISPR technology is depicted in terms of risk, benefit, social/policy context, quoted experts, and the mentioning of other biotechnologies. Our findings show that from the time that CRISPR was developed for agriculture over a decade ago, agricultural news has consistently reflected a pro-innovation stance, frequently describing its benefits as well as advantages over longerstanding biotechnologies. Industry representatives were quoted most frequently, followed by university scientists and political representatives, while producers and non-governmental groups were quoted least frequently. Technology-related risks (off-target effects, financial risks) were notably lacking, but CRISPR's social context was covered more extensively, including uncertainties in regulation and consumer acceptance. We discussed the implications for agricultural news professionals, communicators, and future researchers, emphasizing the importance of fostering a more balanced discourse and ensuring informed decision-making within the agricultural sector. In the article "Legislative Constitutionalism and Federal Indian Law," Maggie Blackhawk explores the complex relationship between Indigenous nations, the federal government, and the states in the United States. Blackhawk argues for a shift away from a Supreme Court-centered approach and emphasizes the importance of Congress's authority in Indigenous matters. The article also calls for judicial reform and the recognition of Native peoples' cultural and philosophical traditions in constitutional law. While the author acknowledges the resilience of Native nations in retaining their sovereignty, they also highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Native nations in dealing with federal and state power. The article concludes by suggesting that collaboration between Native nations and government entities could lead to a more inclusive and effective constitutional system. [Extracted from the article]

This article explores the concept of plurinationalism in Latin America, focusing on Bolivia and Ecuador as examples. It discusses how the idea of a plurinational state has been enshrined in their constitutions, but marginalized Indigenous communities are challenging the implementation and meaning of plurinationalism. The article also highlights how plurinational politics are evolving in other countries, such as Peru, Chile, and Argentina, where various social movements are advocating for different forms of state governance. The authors argue that plurinationalism from below, led by grassroots movements, offers a more inclusive and pluralistic vision for the future of Latin America. [Extracted from the article]

Sönke Neitzel's book "Deutsche Krieger: Vom Kaiserreich zur Berliner Republik—Eine Militärgeschichte" explores the history of the German military from 1871 to 2020, focusing on the relationship between society, politics, and the military. Neitzel uses extensive source material to provide authentic insights into the perspectives of political figures and members of the military. The book also examines the cultural practices of the German armed forces and highlights the divide between the military and civilian society. It raises questions about the preservation of military traditions and the challenges faced by the Bundeswehr in achieving combat readiness. Neitzel's study sheds light on the inefficiencies and alienation within the German military and has sparked public debate on the state of the army. [Extracted from the article]

UNITED States presidential election, 2020 , *UNITED States presidential election, 2024 , *NEW Deal, 1933-1939 , *POLITICAL scientists ,VOTING Rights Act of 1965 (U.S.) - Abstract
The 2024 U.S. presidential election is seen as highly significant, with potential consequences for the United States and the world. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris emphasize the importance of looking to the future, while Donald Trump and the Republican Party are seen as wanting to revert to a past that no longer exists. Trump's supporters are described as seeking to maintain white male supremacy and undermine democracy. A second Trump administration could impact U.S. alliances and the country's global role, potentially leading to a break from Europe and the West, strengthening Russia and China, and escalating tensions with China. Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to continue U.S. alliances and prevent isolationism, but there are similarities between the Trump and Harris tickets on certain issues. The outcome of the election will have significant implications, but the extent of those implications remains uncertain. [Extracted from the article]

The article discusses the potential impact of third-party and independent candidates on the outcome of the 2024 presidential election in the United States. It highlights historical examples of third-party candidates influencing election results, such as Ralph Nader in 2000 and Jill Stein in 2016. The article also raises concerns about the potential for political mischief and foreign interference in the election through the use of third-party candidates. It concludes by suggesting that while it is unlikely for a non-Democrat or non-Republican candidate to win the election, these candidates could still play a significant role in determining the outcome. The catastrophe of Russia's war in Ukraine following on the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter-inspired protests raises the possibility of marked changes in people's gendered experiences in Central-Eastern Europe and Eurasia (CEE&E). Drawing upon recent discussions, events, and publications--with particular attention to Ukrainian voices and reflexivity as to my position as a US-based political scientist mostly trained on Russia--I suggest ways that these developments have begun to, can, and should change gender studies. I raise three questions: (1) Does CEE&E still constitute a meaningful geopolitical context--or region--for understanding gender? (2) Who should have authority to speak about gender in CEE&E? and (3) Have the possibilities for solidarities among feminist activists across CEE&E and beyond CEE&E increased or decreased, and why? Considering these questions, I argue that there is still much to be gained from studying gender in CEE&E as a field if we incorporate intersectional and decolonial lenses and especially if we can keep pushing ourselves through the scholarly debates that have constituted the field. Incorporating this part of the world--elided since Soviet collapse--can help gender studies as a whole deepen and reconsider paradigmatic concepts such as intersectionality, colonialism, and solidarity. AUTHORITARIANISM ,POLITICAL scientists ,DEMOCRACY ,POLITICAL systems - Abstract
Political scientists have crafted intricate taxonomies to classify nations beyond liberal democracy, positioning these societies along an authoritarian continuum. Despite the pivotal role of journalists in accelerating political dynamics, there exists a lack of comparative research on media governance in these regimes. Consequently, this study scrutinizes the media governance ecosystems in Vietnam and Singapore. Vietnam is a one-party authoritarian state, whereas Singapore represents a hybrid political system. However, both countries exhibit a stable and uninterrupted rule by the respective ruling party. Our research uncovers the nuances of Singapore's media regulation, which embeds trusted stakeholders with financial interests in key press roles to reinforce the implicit political norms. Conversely, Vietnam employs a more direct, coercive, and state-centric approach. Media actors in both nations occasionally test the boundaries of acceptable discourses, with each government's responses being shaped by specific contexts and broader history. Reforms in Vietnam, embracing privatization and commercialization, mirror Singapore's integration of capitalism, public ownership, and commercial interests when governing media. These findings highlight diverse yet effective authoritarian media governance strategies, unique features, and commonalities in both systems. Overall, media structures in these Southeast Asian countries have undergone profound evolutions towards more sophisticated regulatory tools to manage societal and political transformations. This article considers the social institutions, expertise, and technologies shaping commitments to climate adaptation across the Caribbean. The historical experience of modernity in the region can provide insight into the challenges and opportunities of current global climate negotiations. As greenhouse gas emissions steadily increase, Caribbean scientists and political leaders have taken urgent steps to develop state-sponsored partnerships for projects that combat some of the region's most destructive risks, including floods, hurricanes, and sea level rise. But these projects have tended to prioritize big science over other knowledge forms, demonstrating that climate adaptation materializes around three major concerns: data, vulnerability, and climate justice. Leading up to the 2022 Congressional midterm elections, all predictions pointed to a Republican wave, given factors such as the incumbent president's low approval rate and a struggling national economy. Accordingly, the underwhelming performance of the Republican Party surprised many, resulting in an election that became known as the "asterisk election" due to its unusual and seemingly unpredictable outcome. This study delves into the specifics of the 2022 midterms, exploring factors that may have influenced the results beyond those traditionally considered by political scientists. Our analysis particularly seeks to understand whether a sudden shift in the public salience of specific issues could have influenced voters' preferences, leading them to consider factors they might not have otherwise. To achieve this, we analyzed data from a nationally representative sample of registered voters surveyed immediately after the midterm elections. Our findings reveal that the issue of abortion played a pivotal role during this election. The prominence of abortion was not predestined, as evidenced by a comparative analysis with data from a survey conducted after the 2020 presidential election. Indeed, it seems that the decision by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade in June 2022 significantly increased the salience of abortion. This unexpected policy shock had a significant impact on the behavior of voters in the 2022 midterm elections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CITATION analysis , *POLITICAL scientists , *RESEARCH personnel , *CIVIL society , *CONVERSATION - Abstract
The commercial determinants of health (CDoH) are attracting increased interest and are of great importance when discussing how trade affects health. Through a citation analysis of recent foundational CDoH documents (a Lancet paper series and an Oxford University textbook), we find that fully 71% of all citations reference the health sciences. The health sciences may be well suited to documenting the specific pathways of how commercial (by)products and practices harm human health. However, to operationalize upstream solutions for mitigating these harms, our citation analysis suggests that the field can engage political scientists, economists, sociologists, the trade law and business, as well as advocates in civil society and journalism, more so than it currently does. With CDoH explicitly referring to the interaction between commerce and health, CDoH researchers might be uniquely positioned to get health on the agenda of others, which requires that CDoH methods, datasets, evidence reviews, and proposed interventions are drawn from the widest possible range of sources. AERIAL bombing , *ECONOMIC forecasting , *POLITICAL scientists , *CALIPHATE , *WAR ,SAUDI participation in the Yemen Civil War, 2015- ,ISRAELI military - Abstract
The article argues that the United States should downsize its military presence in the Middle East. It highlights the recent increase in violence and instability in the region, including the Israel-Hamas war, attacks by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria, and direct violence between Iran and Israel. The article questions the assumption that the Middle East is a vital arena of U.S. grand strategy, pointing out that the region's economic outlook is marginal and its governments are largely autocratic and inefficient. It suggests that the U.S. can achieve its limited interests in the region, such as fighting terrorism and ensuring oil supply, without a large-scale troop presence. [Extracted from the article]

POWER (Social sciences) , *PUBLIC opinion , *SOCIAL scientists , *POLITICAL scientists , *PRESIDENTS of the United States - Abstract
The article discusses the influence of electoral politics on U.S. presidents' decision-making in regards to war. It argues that presidents often take electoral considerations into account when making military and diplomatic decisions. The author provides case studies of presidents such as Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson, and Bush to illustrate how electoral self-interest has influenced their decisions on deploying troops. The article acknowledges that democratic pressure can lead to suboptimal foreign-policy decisions but emphasizes the importance of democracy in holding leaders accountable and preventing imperial tendencies. This article explores the significance of the Green Party as an alternative to the mainstream Democratic and Republican parties. It explains that the Green Party does not have a traditional membership structure, but relies on state parties and registered Greens to estimate its support base. The article discusses the Green Party's ideological stance, which promotes ecosocialism and an ecosocialist economy. It also highlights the challenges faced by Green presidential candidates in terms of ballot access and fundraising. The article concludes by discussing the potential joint ticket of Jill Stein and Cornel West and the support for alternative candidates in polls. It acknowledges the dilemma faced by progressive voters in terms of spoiler candidates, but emphasizes the importance of third-party campaigns in raising awareness of overlooked issues and advocating for reforms. The article also touches on the policy similarities and differences between Green Party candidates Jill Stein and Howie Hawkins, particularly in relation to foreign policy. It concludes by acknowledging the small risk of contributing to a Trump victory, but argues that having a credible independent progressive voice in the race is worthwhile. POLITICAL science , *POLITICAL scientists , *SEMANTICS , *COOPERATIVE research - Abstract
Political science and Science Studies both use the words "politics" and "science," yet each applies such different meanings as to nearly appear incommensurable. Here, I explain to political scientists the various uses of these words by Science Studies practitioners and how they could relate to those used by political science. The paper shows that only one of these meanings of the word "science" (out of four possible meanings) distinguishes it in a radical way from "politics" (which may take on six different meanings). Once those meanings have been defined, I propose that a more fruitful collaboration between Science Studies and political science could be developed based on the method of "following issues," rather than delimiting distinct domains for science and politics. PHASE transitions , *TIME-varying networks , *MAGNETIC entropy , *ARTIFICIAL neural networks , *POLITICAL scientists , *POLITICAL change - Abstract
Deciphering the non-trivial interactions and mechanisms driving the evolution of time-varying complex networks (TVCNs) plays a crucial role in designing optimal control strategies for such networks or enhancing their causal predictive capabilities. In this paper, we advance the science of TVCNs by providing a mathematical framework through which we can gauge how local changes within a complex weighted network affect its global properties. More precisely, we focus on unraveling unknown geometric properties of a network and determine its implications on detecting phase transitions within the dynamics of a TVCN. In this vein, we aim at elaborating a novel and unified approach that can be used to depict the relationship between local interactions in a complex network and its global kinetics. We propose a geometric-inspired framework to characterize the network's state and detect a phase transition between different states, to infer the TVCN's dynamics. A phase of a TVCN is determined by its Forman–Ricci curvature property. Numerical experiments show the usefulness of the proposed curvature formalism to detect the transition between phases within artificially generated networks. Furthermore, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework in identifying the phase transition phenomena governing the training and learning processes of artificial neural networks. Moreover, we exploit this approach to investigate the phase transition phenomena in cellular re-programming by interpreting the dynamics of Hi-C matrices as TVCNs and observing singularity trends in the curvature network entropy. Finally, we demonstrate that this curvature formalism can detect a political change. Specifically, our framework can be applied to the US Senate data to detect a political change in the United States of America after the 1994 election, as discussed by political scientists.
