However, it is unclear whether the incidence of anemia is increased in patients with asthma. The objective of this study was to compare the incidence of anemia in patients with asthma and healthy adults.Patients and Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients newly diagnosed with asthma at Seoul National University Hospital from 2010 to 2017. Patients with comorbidities before the first visit (index date) that may increase anemia risk were excluded. Cox regression models adjusting for patient age, sex, and obesity were used to compare anemia hazard ratios (HRs) between asthma patients (n=1354) and healthy adults (n=1731).Results: This study included 3085 patients. During 5-y follow-up, anemia occurred in 203 (15.0%) patients with asthma and 79 (4.6%) healthy adults. Compared with healthy adults, the HR for anemia after adjusting for age, sex, and obesity was 4.06 (95% CI: 2.70– 6.09) in patients with asthma. In patients aged 18– 64.9 y, the adjusted HR of anemia was 3.27 (95% CI: 2.12– 5.04) in patients with asthma, compared to healthy patients. In patients > 65 y, this adjusted HR was 5.56 (95% CI: 1.31– 23.67).Conclusion: The risk of anemia was increased in patients with asthma after adjusting for sex, age, and obesity and excluding comorbidities that can cause anemia. These results suggest the need for regular monitoring for anemia in patients with asthma.Keywords: anemia, asthma, inflammation, anemia of chronic disease

This paper examines international relations as perceived by the public in their social media conversations. It examines over 1.8 billion Facebook postings in English and 51 million Chinese posts on Weibo, to reveal the relations among nations as expressed in social media conversations. It argues that social media represent a transnational electronic public sphere, in which public discussions reveal characteristics of international relations as perceived by a foreign public. The findings show that the international relations in social media postings match the core-peripheral structure proposed in the World Systems Theory. Additionally, the relations are associated with the amount of news coverage and public attention a country receives. Overall, the study demonstrates the value of webometric data in revealing how international relations are perceived by average citizens.

This study describes the evolution of the international hyperlink network. The World Wide Web is a distributed hypertext system consisting of a virtual network of content and hyperlinks with billions of interlinked pages. Since the Web has no "engineered architecture," it can be understood as a self-organized system with a well-defined structure of linkage that implies an underlying social structure. This article examines the evolution of the Web’s emergent social structure and communication network at the level of nation-states. It reviews the literature on the international hyperlink network and then focuses on changes between 2009 and 2010 using data on the frequency of bilateral hyperlinks between nations. The article discusses special problems associated with the top-level domain .com as well as other generic top-level domains that do not refer to specific nations whose domain names refer to commercial or vanity applications.

Unlabelled: Premature closure of the proximal epiphysis in patients with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease can cause overgrowth of the greater trochanter. We asked whether distal transfer of the greater trochanter relieved pain and improved limp and whether the operation changed frontal plane kinematic and kinetic parameters of the hip and pelvis in the gait analysis. We reviewed 15 patients (15 hips) with an average age of 16.9 years (range, 13-26 years) who had the operation and were followed for a minimum of 28 months (average, 42 months; range, 28-54 months). The Iowa hip score increased from 85.0 (range, 75.5-87.0) before surgery to 89.1 (range, 83.0-97.0) at the final followup. Only three patients had no pain and Trendelenburg sign postoperatively. Pelvic obliquity angle of affected and contralateral normal hips in ipsilateral stance and contralateral swing phases remained unchanged after surgery. Hip adduction angle and abductor moment during single stance phase of affected and contralateral normal hips were not changed. We concluded trochanteric advancement does little to relieve pain and improve limp in patients with relative overgrowth of the greater trochanter and Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease.Level Of Evidence: Level IV, therapeutic study. On March 25th 2019, the Belle II detector recorded the first collisions delivered by the SuperKEKB accelerator. This marked the beginning of the physics run with vertex detector. The vertex detector was aligned initially with cosmic ray tracks without magnetic field simultaneously with the drift chamber. The alignment method is based on Millepede II and the General Broken Lines track model and includes also the muon system or primary vertex position alignment. To control weak modes, we employ sensitive validation tools and various track samples can be used as alignment input, from straight cosmic tracks to mass-constrained decays. With increasing luminosity and experience, the alignment is approaching the target performance, crucial for the first physics analyses in the era of Super-BFactories. We will present the software framework for the detector calibration and alignment, the results from the first physics run and the prospects in view of the experience with the first data.

The Belle II experiment features a substantial upgrade of the Belle detector and will operate at the SuperKEKB energy-asymmetric e+e− collider at KEK in Tsukuba, Japan. The accelerator completed its first phase of commissioning in 2016, and the Belle II detector saw its first electron-positron collisions in April 2018. Belle II features a newly designed silicon vertex detector based on double-sided strip layers and DEPFET pixel layers. A subset of the vertex detector was operated in 2018 to determine background conditions (Phase 2 operation). The collaboration completed full detector installation in January 2019, and the experiment started full data taking. This paper will report on the final arrangement of the silicon vertex detector part of Belle II with a focus on online monitoring of detector conditions and data quality, on the design and use of diagnostic and reference plots, and on integration with the software framework of Belle II. Data quality monitoring plots will be discussed with a focus on simulation and acquired cosmic and collision data.

Abstract Solvation free energy is a fundamental thermodynamic quantity that should be determined to estimate various physicochemical properties of a molecule and the desolvation cost for its binding to macromolecular receptors. Here, we propose a new solvation free energy function through the improvement of the solvent-contact model, and test its applicability in estimating the solvation free energies of organic molecules with varying sizes and shapes. This new solvation free energy function is constructed by combining the existing solute-solvent interaction term with the self-solvation term that reflects the effects of intramolecular interactions on solvation. Four kinds of atomic parameters should be determined in this solvation model: atomic fragmental volume, maximum atomic occupancy, atomic solvation, and atomic self-solvation parameters. All of these parameters for total 37 atom types are optimized by the operation of a standard genetic algorithm in such a way to minimize the difference between the experimental solvation free energies and those calculated by the solvation free energy function for 362 organic molecules. The solvation free energies estimated from the new solvation model compare well with the experimental results with the associated squared correlation coefficients of 0.88 and 0.85 for training and test sets, respectively. The present solvation model is thus expected to be useful for estimating the solvation free energies of organic molecules.

Background: Although the presence of both obesity and reduced muscle mass presents a dual metabolic burden and additively has a negative effect on a variety of cardiometabolic parameters, data regarding the associations between their combined effects and left ventricular diastolic function are limited. This study investigated the association between the ratio of skeletal muscle mass to visceral fat area (SVR) and left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) in patients with preserved ejection fraction using random forest machine learning., Methods: In total, 1,070 participants with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction who underwent comprehensive health examinations, including transthoracic echocardiography and bioimpedance body composition analysis, were enrolled. SVR was calculated as an index of sarcopenic obesity by dividing the appendicular skeletal muscle mass by the visceral fat area., Results: In the random forest model, age and SVR were the most powerful predictors of LVDD. Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that older age (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 1.11; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.07 to 1.15) and lower SVR (adjusted OR, 0.08; 95% CI, 0.01 to 0.57) were independent risk factors for LVDD. SVR showed a significant improvement in predictive performance and fair predictability for LVDD, with the highest area under the curve noted in both men and women, with statistical significance. In non-obese and metabolically healthy individuals, the lowest SVR tertile was associated with a greater risk of LVDD compared to the highest SVR tertile., Conclusion: Decreased muscle mass and increased visceral fat were significantly associated with LVDD compared to obesity, body fat composition, and body muscle composition indices.

Until now, Hippo pathway-mediated nucleocytoplasmic translocation has been considered the primary mechanism by which yes-associated protein (YAP) and transcriptional co-activator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ) transcriptional coactivators regulate cell proliferation and differentiation via transcriptional enhanced associate domain (TEAD)-mediated target gene expression. In this study, however, we found that TAZ, but not YAP, is associated with the Golgi apparatus in macrophages activated via Toll-like receptor ligands during the resolution phase of inflammation. Golgi-associated TAZ enhanced vesicle trafficking and secretion of proinflammatory cytokines in M1 macrophage independent of the Hippo pathway. Depletion of TAZ in tumor-associated macrophages promoted tumor growth by suppressing the recruitment of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes. Moreover, in a diet-induced metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis model, macrophage-specific deletion of TAZ ameliorated liver inflammation and hepatic fibrosis. Thus, targeted therapies being developed against YAP/TAZ-TEAD are ineffective in macrophages. Together, our results introduce Golgi-associated TAZ as a potential molecular target for therapeutic intervention to treat tumor progression and chronic inflammatory diseases.

Background: The ionic mechanism underlying Brugada syndrome (BrS) arises from an imbalance in transient outward current flow between the epicardium and endocardium. Previous studies report that artemisinin, originally derived from a Chinese herb for antimalarial use, inhibits the Ito current in canines. In a prior study, we showed the antiarrhythmic effects of artemisinin in BrS wedge preparation models. However, quinidine remains a well-established antiarrhythmic agent for treating BrS. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the efficacy of combining artemisinin with low-dose quinidine in suppressing ventricular tachyarrhythmia (VTA) in experimental canine BrS models., Methods: Transmural pseudo-electrocardiogram and epicardial/endocardial action potential (AP) were recorded from coronary-perfused canine right ventricular wedge preparation. To mimic the BrS model, acetylcholine (3 μM), calcium channel blocker verapamil (1 μM), and Ito agonist NS5806 (6-10 μM) were administered until VTA was induced. Subsequently, low-dose quinidine (1-2 μM) combined with artemisinin (100 μM) was perfused to mitigate VTA. Key parameters, including AP duration, J wave area, notch index, and T wave dispersion, were measured., Results: After administering the provocation agents, all sample models exhibited prominent J waves and VTA. Artemisinin alone (100-150 μM) suppressed VTA and restored the AP dome in all three preparations. Its infusion resulted in reductions in the J wave area and epicardial notch index. Consequently, low-dose quinidine (1-2 μM) did not fully restore the AP dome in all six sample models. However, when combined with additional artemisinin (100 μM), low-dose quinidine effectively suppressed VTA in all six models and restored the AP dome while also decreasing the J wave area and epicardial notch index., Conclusion: Low-dose quinidine alone fails to fully alleviate VTA in the BrS wedge model. However, its combination with artemisinin effectively suppresses VTA. The present study investigated the anti‑melanogenesis effects of Giant Centella asiatica (GCA), a new cultivator of Centella asiatica (CA) cataloged by the Korea Forest Service in 2022, and compared its efficacy with that of traditional CA. GCA has a high yield per unit area and enhanced antioxidant properties. The anti‑melanogenic effects of GCA were investigated using B16F10 melanoma cells and a 3D human skin‑equivalent model. Key molecular mechanisms were elucidated through western blotting, cAMP assays and molecular docking studies. Focus was addressed on the effect of GCA on skin whitening by comparing the ability of a GCA extract to inhibit melanin production in B16F10 melanoma cells and a 3D human skin‑equivalent model to that of CA. The results showed that the GCA extracts more effectively reduced melanin production, which was attributed to their higher content of two active components, madecassoside and asiaticoside. Further investigation revealed that GCA primarily inhibited melanogenesis through the PKA‑cAMP response element‑binding (CREB)‑microphthalmia‑associated transcription factor (MITF) axis, a key regulatory pathway in melanin synthesis. Notably, the present study, to the best of our knowledge, is the first to demonstrate that madecassoside and asiaticoside, the two principal compounds in GCA, directly bound to MC1R, which contributed to the significant skin‑whitening effects. Moreover, GCA reduced melanin production in a 3D human skin‑equivalent model, showing efficacy within a complex skin environment. These results demonstrated the superior effectiveness of GCA to that of CA for skin anti‑melanogenesis, indicating its potential as a promising natural material for targeting pigmentation disorders.

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is widely used to analyze elemental distributions in samples. Micro-XRF (µ-XRF), the most basic conventional XRF technique, offers good spatial resolution through precise 2D scanning with a micrometre-sized X-ray source. Recently, synchrotron based XRF analysis platforms have achieved nano-XRF with highly focused X-rays using polycapillary optics or mirrors, leveraging the excellent coherence of synchrotron radiation. However, XRF techniques are hindered by long data acquisition times (exceeding several hours) due to their point-by-point scanning approach, impeding large-area elemental mapping. Full-field XRF (FF-XRF), developed in the 2010s and based on the high brilliance of synchrotron X-rays, enables significantly shorter (less than a few minutes) data acquisition times via single-exposure imaging using a 2D X-ray detector. Nevertheless, it is constrained by relatively low spatial resolution and sensitivity. Hence, a new XRF platform is required to accommodate resolution demands to cover diverse experimental purposes. In this study, we developed a preliminary model of a novel XRF system that combines micro- and full-field XRF setups to address these limitations. This system allows easy mode switching while maintaining the region of interest of the imaging system within a single apparatus, simply by rotating the sample to face either detector depending on research purposes. Endometrial cancer, a common gynecological malignancy, poses significant clinical challenges, particularly in advanced or recurrent cases. TANK-binding kinase 1 (TBK1), a serine/threonine kinase, plays crucial roles in inflammation and immunity by activating nuclear factor (NF)-κB and interferon regulatory factor 3. However, its specific roles in endometrial cancer remain unknown. In this study, we aimed to investigate the anti-cancer effects and underlying mechanisms of amlexanox, a TBK1 inhibitor, against endometrial cancer. The main genetic mutations in TBK1 were found to be mRNA downregulation and missense mutations. Kaplan-Meier plotter analysis revealed that low TBK1 expression was associated with a good prognosis in patients with uterine corpus endometrial carcinoma (UCEC). In vitro experiments demonstrated that TBK1 knockdown or amlexanox significantly inhibited the proliferation, cell cycle progression, and migration of endometrial cancer cells. Furthermore, the inhibitory effects of targeting TBK1 on cancer cell proliferation and migration were mediated by the protein kinase B (AKT)/NF-κB signaling pathway. Xenograft experiments revealed that both amlexanox treatment and TBK1 knockdown effectively suppressed the tumor growth. Overall, this study highlights the potent anti-cancer effects of amlexanox against endometrial cancer by modulating AKT/NF-κB signaling, thus providing a new avenue for the development of novel TBK1-targeting therapeutic strategies for UCEC., Competing Interests: Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interest exists., (© The author(s).)

Background: The traditional gamma evaluation method combines dose difference (DD) and distance-to-agreement (DTA) to assess the agreement between two dose distributions. However, while gamma evaluation can identify the location of errors, it does not provide information about the type of errors., Purpose: The purpose of this study is to optimize and apply the structural similarity (SSIM) index algorithm as a supplementary metric for the quality evaluation of radiation therapy plans alongside gamma evaluation. By addressing the limitations of gamma evaluation, this study aims to establish clinically meaningful SSIM criteria to enhance the accuracy of patient-specific quality assurance (PSQA)., Methods: We analyzed the relationship between the gamma passing rate (GPR) and the SSIM index with respect to distance and dose errors. For SSIM analysis corresponding to gamma evaluation criteria of 3%/2 mm, we introduce the concept of SSIM passing rate (SPR). We determined a valid SSIM index that met the gamma evaluation criteria and applied it. Evaluations performed for 40 fields measured with an electronic portal imaging device (EPID) were analyzed using the GPR and the applied SPR., Results: The study results showed that distance errors significantly affected both the GPR and the SSIM index, whereas dose errors had some influence on the GPR but little impact on the SSIM index. The SPR was 100% for distance error of 2 mm but began to decrease for distance errors of 3 mm or more. An optimal SSIM index threshold of 0.65 was established, indicating that SPR fell below 100% when distance errors exceeded 2 mm., Conclusions: This study demonstrates that the SSIM algorithm can be effectively applied for the quality evaluation of radiation therapy plans. The SPR can serve as a supplementary metric to gamma evaluation, offering a more precise identification of distance errors. Background: Scalp hair plays a crucial role in social communication by expressing personal appearance and self-identity. Consequently, hair loss often leads to a perception of unattractiveness, negatively impacting an individual's life and mental health. Currently, the use of Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drugs for hair loss is associated with several side effects, highlighting the need for identifying new drug candidates, such as plant-derived phytochemicals, to overcome these issues., Objective: This study investigated the hair growth-promoting effects of araliadiol, a polyacetylene compound found in plants such as Centella asiatica ., Methods: We employed an in vitro model comprising human hair follicle stem cells (HHFSCs) and human dermal papilla cells (HDPCs) to evaluate the hair growth-promoting effects of araliadiol. The proliferation-stimulating effects of araliadiol were assessed using water-soluble tetrazolium salt assay, adenosine triphosphate content assay, and crystal violet staining assay. In addition, we performed luciferase reporter assay, polymerase chain reaction analysis, cell fractionation, Western blot analysis, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to elucidate the mechanism underlying the hair growth-inductive effects of araliadiol., Results: Araliadiol exhibited both proliferation- and hair growth-promoting effects in HHFSCs and HDPCs. Specifically, it increased the protein expression of cyclin B1 and Ki67. In HHFSCs, it elevated the expression of hair growth-promoting factors, including CD34, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and angiopoietin-like 4. Similarly, araliadiol increased the expression of hair growth-inductive proteins such as fibroblast growth factor 7, VEGF, noggin, and insulin-like growth factor 1 in HDPCs. Subsequent Western blot analysis and ELISA using inhibitors such as GW9662 and SB202190 confirmed that these hair growth-promoting effects were dependent on the p38/PPAR-γ signaling in both HHFSCs and HDPCs., Conclusion: Araliadiol promotes hair growth through the p38/PPAR-γ signaling pathway in human hair follicle cells. A high-fat diet (HFD) can induce airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) in obese mice, independent of allergic sensitization. This study aimed to identify the key molecules related to AHR in HFD-induced obese mice. In a cluster analysis of time series gene expression in the adipose and lung tissues of HFD-induced obese mice, we identified the Caspase Recruitment Domain Family Member 11 (Card11) gene as an essential molecule. We measured CARD11 expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from obese individuals with asthma and performed Card11 signal inhibition in HFD-induced obese mice via Card11 siRNA. Card11 expression was significantly increased in M1 macrophages (IL-1β + CD11c + CD206 - in CD11b + ) in adipose tissue and in ILC3s (RORγt + in IL7R + of Lin - ) in lung tissue from HFD-induced obese mice. In addition, CARD11 + populations among ILC3s and LPS-stimulated IL-1β + CD16 + monocytes from the PBMCs of obese individuals with asthma were significantly greater than those from obese controls or nonobese individuals with asthma. AHR in HFD-induced obese mice disappeared when we inhibited the Card11 signaling pathway by administering Card11 siRNA during the first or last seven weeks of the 13-week HFD feeding. Finally, we confirmed that Card11 siRNA decreased the number of M1 macrophages in adipose tissue and the number of ILC3s in lung tissue in vitro. Card11 significantly contributes to the development of AHR in HFD-induced obese mice by affecting immune cells in both adipose and lung tissues. Objective: In degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis, interbody fusion surgery (IFS) has long been recommended as the gold standard of surgical management. However, IFS is less recommended for high-risk patients such as the elderly because it involves extensive surgery, with a long operation time and high volumes of blood loss, which lead to marked perioperative morbidity. We report an alternative primary and salvage treatment technique for high-risk lumbar spondylolisthesis through posterior lumbar element reinforcement using interspinous fixation (ISF) and decompression alone without interbody fusion., Methods: Plain radiographs, computed tomography scans, and magnetic resonance imaging, taken at different intervals, were used to measure local disc height (DH), vertebral body slippage (BS), and segmental motion angle (SMA). A visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Oswestry disability index (ODI) were applied pre-operation and at the last follow-up., Results: The local SMA decreased significantly by 3.46±3.07°, from 10.61±3.42° preoperatively to 7.15±3.70 at the last follow-up (p<0.001). The DH decreased from 8.61±2.88 mm preoperatively to 8.41±2.48 mm at the last follow-up (p=0.074). The BS decreased from 3.49±4.29 mm preoperatively to 3.41±4.91 mm at the last follow-up (p=0.092). None of the patients reported worsening pain or an increased ODI after surgery, and there were no surgery-related complications., Conclusion: Posterior lumbar element reinforcement by decompression alone with SPIRE™ fixation is an alternative primary and salvage treatment option for select patients with spondylolisthesis.

Background: Various operative methods for the treatment of Morton's neuroma have been discussed, and osteotomy of the metatarsal bone has been reported recently. However, there has been no report of pedobarographic changes after metatarsal osteotomy. Pedobarographic changes of other metatarsal area after the surgery may cause transfer metatarsalgia, and thorough analysis of the pedobarographic data should be performed peri-operatively. The purpose of this study is to investigate the post-operative pedobarographic changes of sliding osteotomy of the 3rd metatarsal bone for treating Morton's neuroma., Methods: Forty patients (45 feet) who underwent metatarsal sliding osteotomy of the 3rd metatarsal bone for treating Morton's neuroma from November 2013 to December 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Proximal sliding osteotomy was performed at the proximal 3rd metatarsal bone through dorsal approach. Clinical outcomes were evaluated with American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Lesser Metatarsophalangeal Interphalangeal Scale (AOFAS LMIS), Foot Function Index (FFI), and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Plain radiograph and pedobarogram were performed to evaluate the radiologic and pedobarographic outcomes., Results: AOFAS score was improved from 52.8 ± 9.0 (18-62) to 88.8 ± 9.8 (78-100) and FFI was improved from 61.8 ± 4.9 (50-70) to 32.2 ± 5.1 (23-42) on average. The 3rd metatarsal bone was shortened by 3.1 ± 0.8 mm and dorsally shifted by 1.5 ± 0.4 mm after the surgery. Plantar intermetatarsal distances between 2nd and 3rd and 3rd and 4th metatarsal heads were significantly increased post-operatively. This paper describes an original dataset of children's speech, collected through the use of JIBO, a social robot. The dataset encompasses recordings from 110 children, aged 4-7 years old, who participated in a letter and digit identification task and extended oral discourse tasks requiring explanation skills, totaling 21 h of session data. Spanning a 2-year collection period, this dataset contains a longitudinal component with a subset of participants returning for repeat recordings. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the most common types of cardiovascular disease and can lead to a heart attack as plaque gradually builds up inside the coronary arteries, blocking blood flow. Previous studies have shown that polymorphisms in the PAI-1 gene are associated with CAD; however, studies of the PAI-1 3'-untranslated region, containing a miRNA binding site, and the miRNAs that interact with it, are insufficient. To investigate the association between miRNA polymorphisms and CAD in the Korean population based on post-transcriptional regulation, we genotyped five polymorphisms in four miRNAs targeting the 3'-untranslated region of PAI-1 using real-time PCR and TaqMan assays. We found that the mutant genotype of miR-30c rs928508 A > G was strongly associated with increased CAD susceptibility. In a genotype combination analysis, the combination of the homozygous mutant genotype (GG) of miR-30c rs928508 with the wild-type genotype (GG) of miR-143 rs41291957 resulted in increased risk for CAD. Also, in an allele combination analysis, the combination of the mutant allele (G) of miR-30c rs928508 and the wild-type allele (G) of miR-143 rs41291957 resulted in increased risk for CAD. Furthermore, metabolic syndrome and diabetes mellitus showed synergistic effects on CAD risk when combined with miR-30c rs928508. These results can be applied to identify CAD prognostic biomarkers among miRNA polymorphisms and various clinical factors.

This narrative review describes up-to-date treatment options for peri-implantitis and proposes a treatment protocol and flowchart based on the current scientific evidence. Peri-implantitis treatment should be based on the phased treatment protocol for periodontitis, which is a continuous flow of decisions for extraction, nonsurgical and surgical treatments with step-by-step re-evaluation. The protocol's goals are to fulfill the success criteria for peri-implantitis treatment (probing depth of ≤5 mm, and absence of bleeding on probing, suppuration, and progressive bone loss) and to halt disease progression. Fixtures with peri-implantitis can initially be classified as failed or failing. A failed implant needs to be removed. In contrast, nonsurgical and surgical treatments can be applied to a failing implant. Nonsurgical treatment should be the initial treatment for failing implants; however, sole nonsurgical treatment was regarded as inefficient for peri-implantitis. Recent studies have found that the adjunctive use of antibiotics to nonsurgical debridement increased the success of nonsurgical treatment for peri-implantitis. Surgical treatments can be classified into resective, access, and reconstructive surgeries. The technique should be selected according to the patient's bone defect configuration, which relate to regenerative potential. Various combinations of decontamination methods (e.g., mechanical, chemical, and pharmacological approaches) are required to achieve absolute surface decontamination. Clinicians should select an appropriate surface decontamination strategy according to the purpose of surgery. After signs of disease disappear and its progression is halted through active peri-implantitis treatment, it is necessary to enroll patients into maintenance programs. Compliance of patients with the maintenance program reduces the recurrence of peri-implantitis and sustains clinical success after treatment. Maintenance visits should include professional plaque control and hygiene care reinforcement for patients, and their interval should be set according to individual peri-implantitis risk. Background: Empathy is a driving force in our connection to others, our mental well-being, and resilience to challenges. With the rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems, mental health chatbots, and AI social support companions, it is important to understand how empathy unfolds toward stories from human versus AI narrators and how transparency plays a role in user emotions., Objective: We aim to understand how empathy shifts across human-written versus AI-written stories, and how these findings inform ethical implications and human-centered design of using mental health chatbots as objects of empathy., Methods: We conducted crowd-sourced studies with 985 participants who each wrote a personal story and then rated empathy toward 2 retrieved stories, where one was written by a language model, and another was written by a human. Our studies varied disclosing whether a story was written by a human or an AI system to see how transparent author information affects empathy toward the narrator. We conducted mixed methods analyses: through statistical tests, we compared user's self-reported state empathy toward the stories across different conditions. In addition, we qualitatively coded open-ended feedback about reactions to the stories to understand how and why transparency affects empathy toward human versus AI storytellers., Results: We found that participants significantly empathized with human-written over AI-written stories in almost all conditions, regardless of whether they are aware (t 196 =7.07, P<.001, Cohen d=0.60) or not aware (t 298 =3.46, P<.001, Cohen d=0.24) that an AI system wrote the story. Although coronary artery occlusion can have a negative effect on the myocardium, chronic total occlusion (CTO) exhibits different clinical features from those of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). In this study, we identify the differential associations of exosomal miRNAs with CTO and AMI. Exosomes were isolated from the plasma obtained from coronary arteries of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention to treat CTO (n = 29) and AMI (n = 24), followed by small RNA sequencing, target gene predictions, and functional enrichment analyses. Promising miRNA markers were validated using real-time PCR in 35 CTO, 35 AMI, and 10 normal subjects. A total of 205 miRNAs were detected in all subjects, and 20 and 12 miRNAs were upregulated and downregulated in CTO compared to AMI patients, respectively (|fold change| > 4, FDR q < 0.05). The target genes of miRNAs that were higher in CTO patients were associated with "regulation of cell cycle phase transition", "cell growth", and "apoptosis". The target genes of miRNAs that were lower in CTO patients were enriched in terms such as "muscle cell differentiation", "response to oxygen levels", and "artery morphogenesis". On qRT-PCR analysis, the expression levels of miR-9-5p and miR-127-3p were significantly different between CTO and AMI patients. The miRNA expression levels accurately distinguished CTO from AMI patients with 79% specificity and 97% sensitivity. The miRNA contents of plasma exosomes were significantly different between CTO and AMI patients. The miRNAs may play important roles in CTO and AMI.

Background: Non-allergic eosinophilic asthma (NAEA) is a distinct subtype of asthma. However, the immune mechanisms associated with NAEA are not yet clearly understood., Objective: To gain further insight into the pathogenesis of NAEA., Methods: The proportion of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) in the blood of patients with allergic eosinophilic asthma (AEA) and NAEA was evaluated. Eosinophilic asthma was defined when fractional exhaled nitric oxide measured at diagnosis (before initiating anti-asthma medications) was greater than 50 ppb. We evaluated the genome-wide gene expression profiles in peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained at enrollment (in a stable state)., Results: A total of 57 participants were enrolled (10 healthy controls, 23 patients with NAEA, and 24 patients with AEA). We found that the type 1 ILC (ILC1) proportion significantly decreased, but the type 2 ILC (ILC2) and type 3 ILC (ILC3) proportions significantly increased in the blood of both patients with NAEA and those with AEA compared with healthy controls. However, there were no significant differences in the ILC1~3 proportions between NAEA and AEA patients. We also identified distinct biological pathways in patients with NAEA (anti-viral pathway) or AEA (IL-4 and IL-13 signaling and neutrophil degranulation pathways) based on co-expressed gene modules showing significant correlations with the ILC proportions., Conclusion: ILC proportions in the blood did not differ between NAEA and AEA patients. However, different biological pathways were related to the ILC proportions in these patients. Our results provide further insight into eosinophilic airway inflammation in allergic and non-allergic patients.

l-Type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1)-specific ligands and polyion complexes are used as brain-specific targets to deliver RNA-based drugs across the blood-brain barrier. We characterized an LAT1-targeting antisense oligonucleotide (ASO)-encapsulated nanoparticle, Phe-NPs/ASO. A 25% density of phenylalanine effectively binds to the surface of LAT1-targeting NPs in the GL261-Luc cells, and Phe-NPs/ASO shows higher binding affinity compared to that without phenylalanine by cellular binding assay. To further characterize the blood-brain barrier-targeting effect and tissue distribution following a single-dose intravenous injection in mice, we performed in vivo biodistribution studies using fluorescence imaging. The Phe-NPs/ASOs were detected in the brain tissue 1 h post-intravenous injection at an approximately 64-fold higher ratio than that of the same ASOs administered in the absence of any NP carrier. The brain tissue delivery of ASO-loaded Phe-NPs was also confirmed in a fluorescence imaging study performed in non-human primates. These results demonstrate that Phe-NPs may successfully deliver an ASO to the brain tissue across brain regions. Background/Objectives : Relatively little has been established about the association of rapid ventricular response (RVR) with further recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF). This study investigated the impact of RVR on the recurrence of AF. Methods : Data were obtained from a multicenter, prospective registry of non-valvular AF patients. RVR was defined as AF with a ventricular rate > 110 bpm. The primary endpoint was the recurrence of AF, defined as the first AF detected on 12-lead electrocardiography during follow-up. Secondary endpoints included manifestation of AF during follow-up and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), a composite of thromboembolic events, major bleeding, myocardial infarction, and death. Results : Among 5533 patients, 493 (8.9%) presented RVR. Patients with RVR were younger, had smaller left atrial diameters, and more frequently had paroxysmal AF. During the mean follow-up duration of 28.6 months, the RVR group exhibited significantly lower recurrence of AF (hazard ratio: 0.58, 95% confidence interval: 0.53-0.65, p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the occurrence of MACEs between patients with RVR and those without RVR (0.96, 0.70-1.31, p = 0.800). AF with RVR was identified as an independent negative predictor of AF recurrence (0.61, 0.53-0.71, p < 0.001). Conclusions : In patients with AF, those with RVR had a significantly lower recurrence of AF without an increase in MACEs. RVR is a favorable marker that may benefit from early rhythm control.

Despite recent advancements, artificial muscles have not yet been able to strike the right balance between exceptional mechanical properties and dexterous actuation abilities that are found in biological systems. Here, we present an artificial magnetic muscle that exhibits multiple remarkable mechanical properties and demonstrates comprehensive actuating performance, surpassing those of biological muscles. This artificial muscle utilizes a composite configuration, integrating a phase-change polymer and ferromagnetic particles, enabling active control over mechanical properties and complex actuating motions through remote laser heating and magnetic field manipulation. Consequently, the magnetic composite muscle can dynamically adjust its stiffness as needed, achieving a switching ratio exceeding 2.7 × 10³. This remarkable adaptability facilitates substantial load-bearing capacity, with specific load capacities of up to 1000 and 3690 for tensile and compressive stresses, respectively. Moreover, it demonstrates reversible extension, contraction, bending, and twisting, with stretchability exceeding 800%. We leverage these distinctive attributes to showcase the versatility of this composite muscle as a soft continuum robotic manipulator. It adeptly executes various programmable responses and performs complex tasks while minimizing mechanical vibrations. Background: The ideal long-term antithrombotic strategy for patients after successful catheter-based atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation is still uncertain. Presently, practices vary, and the advantages of oral anticoagulation (OAC) for the post-ablation population are not clearly established. To date, no randomized trials have addressed this therapeutic question. This study aimed to evaluate whether no OAC therapy is superior to apixaban in reducing the risk of stroke, systemic embolism, or major bleeding among patients without apparent recurrent atrial arrhythmias for at least 1 year after their AF ablation procedure., Methods: The ALONE-AF trial is a prospective, multicenter, open-label, randomized study with blinded outcome assessment. Patients with AF who have at least one non-gender stroke risk factor (as determined by the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score) and no documented recurrences of atrial arrhythmia for at least 12 months post-ablation will be randomly assigned to apixaban 5 mg b.i.d. or no OAC therapy. The primary endpoint is a composite outcome of stroke, systemic embolism, and major bleeding. Key secondary outcomes include clinically relevant non-major bleeding, all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, transient ischemic attack, quality of life, and frailty analysis. Participants will be followed for a period of 2 years. This study analyzed the optical and laser spot acquisition capabilities of a newly developed dual-wavelength-band camera. The camera performance was evaluated using a 3.0 m × 1.8 m Styrofoam target and a 70-mJ laser target designator; mid-infrared images were acquired based on the target distance, and a laser beam was irradiated onto the target to detect laser spots. The dual-wavelength-band camera demonstrated target recognition and spot detection ranges of 3 and 2 km, respectively. Background: Benzophenone-3 is a type of ketone with 2 benzene rings attached to a carbonyl group (C=O) and one benzene ring attached to a hydroxyl group (-OH). As an endocrine-disrupting chemical, benzophenone-3 is known to be associated with reproductive, developmental, thyroid, and endocrine toxicities. Benzophenone-3 is commonly used in hair products, cosmetics, and ultraviolet (UV) filters because of its characteristic property to absorb UV light. This study aims to investigate the association between the use of hair products and urine benzophenone-3 using the data from the Korean National Environmental Health Survey (KoNEHS) cycle 4 (2018-2020), which represents the Korean population., Methods: Using the KoNEHS cycle 4 survey, the data of 3,796 adults aged ≥ 19 years were analyzed. Based on the 75th percentile concentration of urine benzophenone-3, the participants were divided into the low- and high-concentration groups. Chi-square test was conducted to analyze the association of urine benzophenone-3 with distribution of general characteristics, use of personal care products, consumption of marine foods, and use of plastic products as the variable. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to calculate odds ratios (ORs) for the high-concentration group of urine benzophenone-3 based on the use of hair products., Results: Women with < 6 times or ≥ 6 times of hair product usage had significantly higher adjusted ORs compared to those who did not use hair products. Background: Ibuprofen and acetaminophen are widely used as adjuvant analgesics for postoperative pain. This meta-analysis compared the effects of intravenous (IV) ibuprofen and acetaminophen on postoperative opioid consumption and pain intensity after general anesthesia., Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were searched to identify relevant studies published up to May 2023. Randomized controlled trials comparing the effects of perioperative IV ibuprofen and acetaminophen on postoperative opioid consumption and pain after general anesthesia were included in the meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis (TSA)., Results: Eight studies with 494 participants were included. Compared to IV acetaminophen, IV ibuprofen significantly reduced 24 h opioid consumption, presented as morphine equivalents (mean difference [MD]: -6.01 mg, 95% CI [-8.60, -3.42], P < 0.00001, I2 = 55%), and pain scores (on a scale of 0-10) at 4-6 h (MD: -0.83, 95% CI [-1.29, -0.37], P = 0.0004, I2 = 65%) and 12 h (MD: -0.38, 95% CI [-0.68, -0.08], P = 0.01, I2 = 11%) postoperatively. These results were statistically significant in TSA. Pain scores at 24 h postoperatively and side effects were not significantly different between the two groups in the meta-analysis, and TSA revealed that the sample size was too small to adequately evaluate the effects, requiring further studies for conclusive results., Conclusions: Perioperative IV ibuprofen reduced 24 h opioid consumption and pain severity up to 12 h postoperatively compared to acetaminophen. Additional research is required to assess pain intensity beyond 12 h and side effects.

Background: Osteochondral autologous transplantation (OAT) has been widely used in the treatment of osteochondral lesion of the talus (OLT). Previous studies have reported successful outcomes following the use of osteochondral autogenous grafts from the intercondylar notch of the knee or a non-weight-bearing region of the femoral condyle. However, donor-site morbidity of the knee joint has been observed in several cases. This study aimed to investigate the outcomes and safety of OAT with autografts from the ipsilateral lateral talar articular facet as an alternative donor site for medial OLT., Methods: Among 40 patients who underwent OAT, 29 patients were excluded. Eleven patients who underwent OAT with an osteochondral graft harvested from the ipsilateral lateral talar articular facet from 2011 to 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. The size of OLT was measured on ankle magnetic resonance imaging, including coronal length, sagittal length, depth, and area. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot scale and a visual analog scale (VAS). Weight-bearing ankle radiographs were obtained postoperatively and at 1 year after surgery., Results: The average follow-up time after surgery was 64.7 months (range, 14-137 months). The average diameter of lesions was 8.8 mm (range, 8-9.9 mm). The average size of lesions was 51.2 mm 2 (range, 33.6-71.3 mm 2 ) , and all lesions included subchondral cysts. The average depth of lesions was 7.3 mm (range, 6.2-9.1 mm). Graft sizes ranged from 8 to 10 mm in diameter (8 mm, n = 1; 10 mm, n = 10) All measured clinical outcomes improved postoperatively, including the AOFAS scores (preoperative, 55.4 ± 9.0; 1-year follow-up, 92.1 ± 7.6; p = 0.001) and VAS scores (preoperative, 5.5 ± 0.7; 1-year follow-up, 1.9 ± 0.8; p = 0.001). Objective: This study investigated the differences in sociality, communication, and autism severity in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) according to the presence or absence of siblings, the number of siblings, the order of birth, and the sex of sibling., Methods: We included 71 children with autism spectrum disorder who visited University Hospital as outpatients. We compared the communication and socialization scores using the Korean Version of the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale, second edition (K-VABS II); social interaction, communication, and language using the autism diagnostic interview-revised (ADI-R); and the total score of the Korean-Childhood Autism Rating Scale 2 (K-CARS 2) according to the presence or absence of siblings, the number of siblings, the order of birth and the sex of sibling. Data were evaluated with independent t -tests and analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests., Results: The patient's average age was 48.8 ± 13.6 months. There was a significant difference in the total score of K-CARS-2 according to the sex of siblings.
