Crustal deformation and hydrothermal percolation related to the India‐Asia collision have caused extensive remagnetization of the Tethyan Himalaya Terrane (THT). The present work identified three phases of regional remagnetization during 62.3–50.0 Ma for the east‐central THT. Consequently, a model of three‐stage India‐Asia collision was proposed. The east‐central THT first collided with the southward migrated southern margin of the Lhasa Terrane (LT) at 5.4 ± 0.9°N during 62.3–60.9 Ma. Subsequently, the THT continuously moved northward and pushed the southern margin of the LT back to its original position prior to the initiation of fore‐arc and back‐arc extension on both sides of the Gangdese magmatic arc. Since the final suturing of the THT with Asia at ∼10°N during 59.8–58.0 Ma, the east‐central THT remained stationary until India collided with it at 10.9 ± 5.1°N at ∼50.0 Ma. Plain Language Summary: The collision of India and Asia caused intense tectonic deformation and hydrothermal alteration throughout the Tethyan Himalaya Terrane (THT), which resulted in the large‐scale remagnetization in the THT. The regional remagnetization of the THT can be used to constrain the India‐Asia collision process, on the premise that the time of remagnetization can be determined. Based on this assumption, we measured two representative Paleocene remagnetized components from Early Jurassic limestones in the Gyangze Basin in the east‐central THT. These remagnetized components, combined with non‐remagnetized components and remagnetization events recorded in the adjacent areas, suggest that the east‐central THT experienced three phases of regional remagnetization during 62.3–50.0 Ma. The first and second phases of remagnetization in the north‐central part of the east‐central THT occurred at the paleolatitude of 5.4 ± 0.9°N at 62.3–60.9 Ma and 10.3 ± 1.0°N–9.5 ± 1.1°N at 59.8–58.0 Ma, respectively. The third phase of remagnetization occurred in the southern part of the east‐central THT, at the paleolatitude of 10.9 ± 5.1°N at ∼50.0 Ma. Consequently, a model of three‐stage India‐Asia collision and southward spreading tectonic deformation of the THT was proposed based on these successive remagnetizations. To analyze the impact of volcanic rocks in the Offshore Indus Basin on hydrocarbon reservoir formation, seismic data interpretation, seismic data inversion, and sea–land correlation analysis were carried out. The results show that, longitudinally, volcanic rocks are mainly distributed at the top of the Cretaceous system or at the bottom of the Paleocene, and carbonate rock platforms or reefs of the Paleocene–Eocene are usually developed on them. On the plane, volcanic rocks are mainly distributed on the Saurashtra High in the southeastern part of the basin. In terms of thickness, the volcanic rocks revealed by drilling in Karachi nearshore are about 70 m thick. We conducted sparse spike inversion for acoustic impedance in the volcanic rock area. The results show that the thickness of the Deccan volcanic rocks in the study area is between 250 and 750 m which is thinning from southeast to northwest. Based on sea–land comparison and comprehensive research, the distribution of volcanic rocks in the Indian Fan Offshore Basin played a constructive role in the Mesozoic oil and gas accumulation in the Indus offshore. Therefore, in the Indian Fan Offshore Basin, attention should be paid to finding Mesozoic self-generated and self-stored hydrocarbon reservoirs and Cenozoic lower-generated and upper-stored hydrocarbon reservoirs. The Paleocene ore deposits related to the India–Asia continental collision are widely distributed in the Gangdese metallogenic belt. Among these, Sinongduo is the first discovered epithermal Ag-Pb-Zn deposit in the Lhasa terrane. However, there is still controversy over the ore-forming magma in this deposit. This study mainly reports new zircon U-Pb isotopic ages, whole-rock geochemistry, and Sr-Nd isotopic data for the granite porphyry from the Sinongduo deposit, aiming to discuss the petrogenesis and tectonic setting of the granite porphyry and its genetic link between the Ag-Pb-Zn mineralization. The results show that zircon U-Pb analyses yield ages of 62.9 ± 0.5 Ma and 59.0 ± 0.7 Ma for the granite porphyry, indicating that it formed during the Paleocene period. The timing of the granite porphyry intrusion is contemporaneous with the mineralization, suggesting that it is most likely the ore-forming magma in the Sinongduo deposit. The granite porphyry has high SiO2 and K2O, moderate Al2O3, and low Na2O, CaO, and FeOT contents, and it displays significant enrichments in LREEs and LILEs and depletions in HREEs and HFSEs, with negative Eu anomaly. The granite porphyry is a peraluminous series and can be classified as S-type granite. Moreover, the granite porphyry shows relatively high ratios of (87Sr/86Sr)i and low values of εNd(t). The geochemical and isotopic compositions of the granite porphyry from the Sinongduo area are similar to those of the upper continental crust, which suggests that the granite porphyry was most likely derived from the melting of the upper continental crust in the Lhasa terrane during the India–Asia collisional tectonic setting. We describe new macro- and microfossils recovered on a field expedition to the North Quarry of Poponguine, a locality in western Senegal that spans the Late Cretaceous through the Early Paleogene, albeit with a likely unconformity at the base of the Danian. Newly discovered macrovertebrates from the Maastrichtian Cap de Naze Formation include pycnodonts, dyrosaurids, and chelonians, the latter two the oldest and first Cretaceous representatives of these clades from Senegal. Screenwashing of this deposit revealed that the matrix also consists of abundant microscopic biological clasts comprising osteichthyan vertebrae, spines, and cranial fragments, shark dermal denticles, invertebrates, and numerous ovoid coprolites among other fragments. These microfossils document a much less conspicuous portion of the paleobiodiversity. We describe the stratigraphy of this new locality and incorporate it into a new correlated section that ties together three other Late Cretaceous–Early Paleogene fossiliferous localities of the Senegalese-Mauritanian Basin. The presence of fossiliferous Danian rocks, which are notably rare in West Africa, is elucidated in our section, which synthesizes prior geological and paleontological work around Poponguine and in the nearby coastal region of Ndayane. Primarily dated using the biostratigraphy of ostracods and foraminiferans, the correlated rock units include the Paki and the Cap de Naze Formations of the Late Cretaceous Diass Group and the Ndayane and the Poponguine Formations of the Paleocene Cap-Vert Group, deposits that capture ancient near shore marine environments. The localities described, although separated by only a few kilometers, exhibit dramatic differences in thickness across faulted blocks of the Diass Horst. Dyrosaurids, which are common fossils in nearshore marine outcrops of West Africa, have been hypothesized to be of African origin and to have dispersed to South America in the Late Cretaceous. This dyrosaurid specimen, although fragmentary, documents a western extreme in the geographic range of African dyrosaurids where the clade would have been well situated for broader trans-Atlantic dispersal. Branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) are bacterial lipids that have been widely used as environmental proxies in continental paleorecords. Another group of related lipids, branched glycerol monoalkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGMGTs), has recently been proposed as a potential paleotemperature proxy. Nevertheless, the sources and environmental dependencies of both brGDGTs and brGMGTs along the river–sea continuum are still poorly understood, complicating their application as paleoenvironmental proxies in some aquatic settings. In this study, the sources of brGDGTs and brGMGTs and the potential factors controlling their distributions are explored across the Seine River basin (NW France), which encompasses the freshwater-to-seawater continuum. BrGDGTs and brGMGTs were analyzed in soils, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediments (n=237) collected along the land–sea continuum of the Seine basin. Both types of compounds (i.e., brGDGTs and brGMGTs) are shown to be produced in situ, in freshwater and saltwater, based on their high concentrations and distinct distributions in aquatic settings (SPM and sediments) vs. soils. Redundancy analysis further shows that both salinity and nitrogen dominantly control the brGDGT distributions. Furthermore, the relative abundance of 6-methyl vs. that of 5-methyl brGDGTs (the IR 6Me ratio), the total nitrogen (TN), the δ15 N, and the chlorophyll a concentration co-vary in a specific geographical zone with low salinity, suggesting that 6-methyl brGDGTs are preferentially produced under low-salinity and high-productivity conditions. In contrast to brGDGTs, the brGMGT distribution appears to be primarily regulated by salinity, with a distinct influence on the individual homologues. Salinity is positively correlated with homologues H1020a and H1020b and negatively correlated with compounds H1020c and H1034b in SPM. This suggests that bacteria living in freshwater preferentially produce compounds H1020c and H1034b, whereas bacteria that primarily grow in saltwater appear to be predominantly responsible for the production of homologues H1020a and H1020b. Based on the abundance ratio of the freshwater-derived compounds (H1020c and H1034b) vs. their saltwater-derived homologues (H1020a and H1020b), a novel proxy, the Riverine IndeX (RIX), is proposed to trace riverine organic matter inputs, with high values (>0.5) indicating a higher riverine contribution. We successfully applied RIX to the Godavari River basin (India) and a paleorecord across the upper Paleocene and lower Eocene from the Arctic Coring Expedition at Lomonosov Ridge, showing its potential applicability to both modern samples and paleorecords. The kinematics and deformation pattern along the Altyn Tagh fault (ATF), one of the largest strike‐slip faults on Earth is of great significance for understanding the growth of the Tibetan Plateau. However, the initial rupture along the ATF remains debated given the limited constraints on the depositional age of associated Cenozoic syntectonic strata. Here we investigated the syntectonic Cenozoic strata in the Xorkol Basin, associated with the strike‐slip faulting along the ATF. New uranium‐lead analyses of the carbonate deposits in the Paleogene strata yield dates of 58.9 ± 1.29 Ma, representing the initial rupture of the ATF. This first documented radioisotopic age coincides with the ca. 60 Ma onset timing of India‐Asia collision, highlighting its far‐field effect at the northern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. We infer that the deformation of the entire Tibetan Plateau started synchronously with the India‐Asia collision. Plain Language Summary: Carbonate U‐Pb dating techniques applied to rocks associated with the Altyn Tagh fault, a major fault in North Tibet, reveal that the fault started slipping about 58.9 million years ago, coinciding with the time when India collided with Asia. This finding provides new constraints on when and where this fault formed and suggests that the northern Tibetan Plateau started deformation earlier than previously thought. This result emphasizes that the entire Tibetan Plateau deformed simultaneously in the early Cenozoic. Background: The "woody clade" in Saxifragales (WCS), encompassing four woody families (Altingiaceae, Cercidiphyllaceae, Daphniphyllaceae, and Hamamelidaceae), is a phylogenetically recalcitrant node in the angiosperm tree of life, as the interfamilial relationships of the WCS remain contentious. Based on a comprehensive sampling of WCS genera, this study aims to recover a robust maternal backbone phylogeny of the WCS by analyzing plastid genome (plastome) sequence data using Bayesian inference (BI), maximum likelihood (ML), and maximum parsimony (MP) methods, and to explore the possible causes of the phylogenetic recalcitrance with respect to deep relationships within the WCS, in combination with molecular and fossil evidence. Results: Although the four WCS families were identically resolved as monophyletic, the MP analysis recovered different tree topologies for the relationships among Altingiaceae, Cercidiphyllaceae, and Daphniphyllaceae from the ML and BI phylogenies. The fossil-calibrated plastome phylogeny showed that the WCS underwent a rapid divergence of crown groups in the early Cretaceous (between 104.79 and 100.23 Ma), leading to the origin of the stem lineage ancestors of Altingiaceae, Cercidiphyllaceae, Daphniphyllaceae, and Hamamelidaceae within a very short time span (∼4.56 Ma). Compared with the tree topology recovered in a previous study based on nuclear genome data, cytonuclear discordance regarding the interfamilial relationships of the WCS was detected. Conclusions: Molecular and fossil evidence imply that the early divergence of the WCS might have experienced radiative diversification of crown groups, extensive extinctions at the genus and species levels around the Cretaceous/Paleocene boundary, and ancient hybridization. Such evolutionarily complex events may introduce biases in topological estimations within the WCS due to incomplete lineage sorting, cytonuclear discordance, and long-branch attraction, potentially impacting the accurate reconstruction of deep relationships. The abundance of shark and actinopterygian fossils in the Cretaceous and Paleogene strata of the Atlantic Coastal Plain is well documented; but much remains unknown about the survivorship patterns of these major components of shallow marine faunas in the western Atlantic through the K/Pg mass extinction. To shed light on this subject, we describe an assemblage of new actinopterygian, chondrichthyan, and reptilian microfossils recently recovered from the Maastrichtian Navesink and Maastrichtian-Danian Hornerstown formations at the Jean and Ric Edelman Fossil Park at Rowan University in Mantua Township, New Jersey. The new microfossils clarify extinction patterns across the K/Pg, create temporal and geographic range extensions for several taxa, and expand the known fauna of this regionally-rare and important K/Pg-boundary locality. We report 11 new additions to the vertebrate fauna of Edelman Fossil Park, the first Paleocene record of Saurocephalus lanciformis, the first Cretaceous records of Paralbula marylandica and Palaeogaleus vincenti, and the first recovery of gar and dercetid fish remains from the Paleocene in New Jersey (the last indicating that these fish survived the K/Pg extinction in the western Atlantic). Geographic range extensions include: Notidanodon brotzeni into the Western Hemisphere, Saurocephalus into northeastern North America and Phyllodus paulkatoi to the eastern coast of North America. A dentary of a juvenile alligatorid, Bottosaurus harlani, indicate that the mandible exhibited isometric growth through ontogeny. Our findings generally agree with other studies that these groups were significantly impacted by the extinction event, that extinctions were selective, and recovery was slow. This wealth of novel insights garnered from microfossils in this study highlights their critical importance for elaborating past faunas and illuminating the character of ancient ecosystems. We therefore recommend microsieving as a fruitful method for future faunal studies of shallow-marine strata and predict that such efforts will frequently yield similar important insights. Research on the provenance of sedimentary systems is key to better understanding the sedimentary framework and improving exploration-associated decision-making and deployment. With regard to the provenance of sedimentary systems, there is still poor understanding in the initial rifting stage due to imbalanced and insufficient exploration and a common lack of seismic data, which have seriously hindered oil exploration in the Qintong Sag, Subei Basin. This study aimed at investigating the provenance in the direction of the fault-terrace zone in the southeast part of the Qintong Sag and aimed to examine whether large-scale sedimentary systems are formed by these sediment sources. Integrated analysis of heavy minerals, sandstone petrologic maturity, drilling cutting dates, 3D seismic data, and well logs was employed to identify the provenance. This study is the first time that large-scale provenance from the direction of the fault-terrace zone has been discovered in the third member of the Paleocene Funing Formation (referred to as the third Mbr of the Funing Fm in this paper) in the Subei Basin, east China. The documentation shows that sediments from the northwest Wubao Low Uplift and the southeast Taizhou Uplift can be distinguished in the Qintong Sag, with the large-scale delta system in the central and eastern part of the Qintong Sag comprising sediments from the Taizhou Uplift, improving upon previous understanding of the sedimentary framework. The deposition formed by the Taizhou Uplift provenance system was characterized by gradual weakening of the hydrodynamic forces, a decreasing sediment supply, and shrinking of the retrogradational delta depositional systems with good reservoir qualities, which are characterized by high-quality source–reservoir–cap combinations and are likely to develop into a hydrocarbon-rich belt. The discovery of the Taizhou Uplift provenance proves that there may be major provenance and large-scale sedimentary systems from the fault-terrace zone of the rift basins in the initial rifting stage. The experience of rapid retrogradation showed that these large-scale delta systems are likely to only flourish in the initial rifting stage. We report a new ecological refugium for the Cheirolepidiaceae family (pollen form genus Classopollis) in the Paleocene Lower Wilcox Group in the Gulf Coast of southeastern Texas based on palynological analysis of four wells. The Cheirolepidiaceae were once thought to have gone extinct at the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary or earlier in North America; however, similar ecological refugia for this family in the Paleocene have previously been reported in China, Argentina, and potentially the Rocky Mountains of the United States. The highest relative abundances of Classopollis pollen were found in delta front, lagoon, and shoreface depositional paleoenvironments marked by high mud-fraction Sr/Ba (a geochemical proxy for salinity), and abundances generally increased down section in older Paleocene strata. The high relative abundance of Classopollis pollen in the well samples, the rarity of reworked Mesozoic palynomorphs, the generally good preservation of Classopollis pollen, and the similarity of Classopollis fluorescence spectra to other in situ Paleocene pollen all provide strong evidence for the survival of the Cheirolepidiaceae family in the coastal salt marshes of Texas through at least the late Paleocene. Palms are known to be an important and diverse angiosperm component in the Deccan Intertrappean beds of Central India. However, the report of fossilized palm stems inhibiting saprophytic fungal remains is empty in the field of paleobotany. Here, we document for the first time the occurrence of fungal remains in a petrified palm stem collected from the latest Maastrichtian (Late Cretaceous)-earliest Danian (early Paleocene) sediments of the Deccan Intertrappean beds of Madhya Pradesh, Central India. The anatomical features of the fossil stem are characterized by the presence of Corypha-type general stem pattern (progressive decrease of fibrous parts of fibrovascular bundles, fvbs from the periphery towards the center), vaginata-shaped fvbs with dorsal fibrous sclerenchymatous part (dcap) adjacent to the phloem, metaxylem vessel element varying from 1 in the outer part to 2 and more (>4) in the inner central zone, and abundant fibrous bundles in the central zone. Based on these anatomical characteristics, our Deccan specimen is confidently placed under extant Corypha-type coryphoid palm taxa belonging to the family Arecaceae and is recognized as a new species Palmoxylon coryphaoides Ali, Roy et Khan sp. nov. The detailed anatomical study of the fossil stem specimen also reveals that it is endogenously infected with well-preserved fungal conidia similar to the modern saprophytic fungus Epicoccum Link. ex Schlecht that are profusely distributed in the metaxylem vessels. The evidence of the current palm species and earlier-reported fossil palm species similar to Coryphoideae collectively indicate the existence of a tropical, warm, and humid environment in the Deccan Intertrappean Beds of Madhya Pradesh during the time of deposition. The mineralogical and chemical characteristics of Upper Cretaceous-Lower Paleocene claystone sediment samples taken from Mardin and Batman, located in southeastern Türkiye, were analyzed in the present study. The clay mineral paragenesis in the Upper Cretaceous units consisted of chlorite-smectite (C-S) and illite, whereas the Lower Paleocene unit consisted of chlorite-vermiculite (C-V) and vermiculite minerals. Analyses conducted on clay samples indicated high levels of Al, Mg, Fe, Cr, V, Ni, and Zr. Low levels of alkali and alkaline earth elements (Mg, Na, Ca, K) in the clay-rich sediments suggest relatively high-grade weathering in the source area. The mineralogical compositions, major elemental ratios, and trace and rare earth element (REE) contents of the sediments indicate that the Upper Cretaceous unit consists of materials with predominantly felsic lithology, whereas relatively detrital contributions from basic sources are found in the Lower Paleocene unit. A comparison of the major and trace element contents of phyllosilicate/clay minerals with the members revealed that the patterns of the clays were distinct from each other. However, the enrichments/depletions varied depending on the origin (basement rocks or detrital) of the derived rocks, minerals, and elements. The major and trace element geochemistry of Upper Cretaceous-Lower Paleocene rocks was associated with a passive margin setting. Sedimentation processes and differences in provenance among members of the Germav Formation during the Cretaceous-Tertiary periods were largely influenced by local or regional geodynamic and diagenetic events. The Caoziwa Pb–Zn deposit is one of the typical vein-type Pb–Zn deposits in the western part of the Tengchong block. Due to limited research, the genesis of these deposits is unknown. In this study, the sulfur isotopic and trace elemental compositions of sulfides from the Caoziwa Pb–Zn deposit were analyzed to trace the sources of ore-forming materials, and to reveal the genetic type of this deposit. The results show that abundant Co, Ni, As, and Se, and less Cu, Zn, Ag, Cd, Sn, Sb, Te, Pb, and Bi could enter pyrite by isomorphic substitution. Elemental Mn, Fe, Cd, Co, and Ni could substitute Zn to enter sphalerite, while the contents of Ag, Sn, and Sb are mainly controlled by the Pb-rich inclusions in sphalerite. Elemental Bi, Sb, Cd, Sn, Ag, and Tl mainly enter the galena grains via an isomorphic substitution mechanism of (Bi, Sb)3+ + (Cd, Sn)2+ + (Ag, Tl)+ ↔ 2Pb2+. Both sulfur isotopic compositions and trace elemental compositions indicate that the ore-forming materials and fluids of the Caoziwa Pb–Zn deposit mainly originate from magmatic hydrothermal fluid related to Paleocene granitic magmatism. Combined with the geological facts that some skarnizations developed in the northern part of the ore field near the Paleocene granite, the Caoziwa Pb–Zn deposit is suggested to be a magmatic hydrothermal vein-type deposit that probably belongs to a distal part of a skarn mineralization system developed by the intrusion of Paleocene granitic magmatism in the western part of the Tengchong block. Exploration in the Lishui West Sag of the East China Sea Basin is limited by the scarcity of offshore drilling sites, and the prediction of deep, high-quality reservoirs is challenging using only geophysical methods. This study introduces a quantitative approach to diagenetic facies division in individual wells based on logging data, providing a new method and perspective for the prediction of deep, high-quality reservoirs. We employed comprehensive data from core, logging, thin-section casting, cathodoluminescence, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses from five wells to study the petrology, physical properties, diagenetic types and strength, and diagenetic minerals of the Paleocene sandstone reservoirs in the Lishui West Sag. Apparent compaction rate, apparent cementation rate, and other quantitative characterization parameters were used to calculate the comprehensive diagenetic coefficient (Cg), and the diagenetic facies were divided into compaction, cementation, and dissolution facies. A logging calculation model for the comprehensive diagenetic coefficient (Cg) and a quantitative identification method for diagenetic facies in individual well reservoirs were established through a fitting analysis between Cg and logging curve parameters. Continuous quantitative identification of vertical diagenetic facies in the five wells in the study area showed that the high-quality reservoirs in wells L1, L2, and L3 within the L1 gas field are characterized by extensive development of dissolution facies, while wells L4 and L5 are dominated by compaction and cementation facies, with poor reservoir properties and no industrial gas flow output. The results demonstrate the reliability of the model method. We studied at least part of Kuhnʼs original material of lizards from the Paleocene (~ MP 5) of the Walbeck locality in Germany. The collection was considered to be lost but is consistently discussed in the literature due to its importance. We restudied the type material of aff. Parasauromalus paleocenicus and aff. Glyptosaurus walbeckensis described by Kuhn in 1940. The former was originally allocated to Iguania, the latter to Anguimorpha, though later on these identifications were questioned by several authors. We show such a classification of both cannot be upheld. P. paleocenicus resembles the morphology of lacertids showing their presence in Europe already around MP 5. We consider the name P. paleocenicus as a nomen dubium. The material of aff. G. walbeckensis was later suggested to belong to Lacertidae and also considered as a potential amphisbaenian. Although it differs from modern amphisbaenians, it shares features with one supposed polyodontobaenid – Camptognathosaurus parisiensis. The Walbeck form is identical to this species. Since the Walbeck taxon was described in 1940, the principle of priority makes Camptognathosaurus parisiensis a junior synonym of the species erected by Kuhn. We propose a new combined name for this form, Camptognathosaurus walbeckensis comb. nov. The specimen figured by Kuhn is currently lost, thus we designate a neotype from Walbeck. However, this taxon differs significantly from Polyodontobaena and new data doubt the attribution of Camptognathosaurus to Amphisbaenia. The historic collection of the Geological Survey of Alabama includes several fossil shark specimens that were recovered from the lower Paleocene Porters Creek Formation in southwestern Alabama, USA. Among these specimens are 17 teeth that we herein recognize as a new species within the extinct Paleogene genus, Palaeohypotodus. Detailed examination of these individual teeth, coupled with analyses of the dentitions of various extant lamniform sharks, allowed us to confirm monognathic and dignathic heterodonty within Palaeohypotodus. We identified upper and lower anterior and lateral tooth files that can be differentiated from one another by minor variations in morphology. Additionally, numerous isolated teeth from other Danian exposures in Alabama and Arkansas, USA , enhance our understanding of the composition of the dentition and ontogenetic heterodonty of both the new species and the genus as a whole. The Imo Formation (Paleocene), about 500 m thick cropping out around Umuahia and Okigwe areas, is predominantly clayey shale, mudstone, shale, limestone and sandstone. The formation is exposed at Ozuabam in the Afikpo Basin, southeastern Nigeria. Field investigations, petrology, diagenesis and geochemical analyses were undertaken to evaluate the microfacies characteristics of the carbonates, their depositional dynamics and environmental milieus. They are composed of a 22-m thick alternation of black glauconitic shale and carbonates. Bedded, coarse bioclastic facies overly poorly bedded finer lithology of the unit. Calcimetric analysis permits the differentiation of the carbonates into limestone (>90%CaCO3), marly limestone (65-90% CaCO3) and marl (35-65% CaCO3). The limestone is bioclastic grainstone - packstone, composed of fragmented shells of pauperized and low faunal diversity. The underlying silty and marly mosaic facies, with impoverished organic communities, are essentially wackstone-mudstone. Geochemically and mineralogically, the finer carbonates are more siliceous and dolomitic, respectively. Dolomitization was contemporaneous and related to stylolitization and Mg2+ absorption from illite in the illitic and glauconitic shale interbedding units suggestive of a restricted depositional environment for the carbonates. Early diagenetic imprints included glauconitizaton, fragmentation and micritization while pseudo sparitization, pore cementation and dolomitization represent late diagenesis. The fragmented shells indicate energetic depositional process and correspond to facies 2 and 7 of the carbonate microfacies typifying skeletal sand shoal of lagoon fore slope while the marly facies constitute microfacies 9 and 11 and support deposition within a lagoon shelf. The present study interprets the high resolution of the biostratigraphy across the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary from Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan Region, and north-east Iraq, based on planktic foraminifera. The Dartw section was selected for this study, within the High Folded Zone. The biozone contact consists of lithostratigraphic resemblance and is represented by the upper part of the Tanjero Formation (late Maastrichtian) with the overlying Kolosh Formation (Danian). Four late Maastrichtian planktic foraminiferal biozones have been recorded from the Tanjero Formation: Racemiguembelina fructicosa Interval Zone (CF4), Pseudoguembelina hariaensis Concurrent Range Zone (CF3), Pseudoguembelina palpebra Partial Range Zone (CF2), and Plummerita hantkeninoides Total Range Zone (CF1), while three Danian planktic foraminiferal biozones and two subzones have been recorded from the Kolosh Formation: (Guembelitria cretacea (P0) Interval Zone, Parvularugoglobigerina eugubina (Pα) Total Range Zone, and Parasubbotina pseudobulloides (P1) Partial-Range Zone (Globoanomalina archaeocompressa (P1a) Partial Range Subzone, and Subbotina triloculinoides (P1b) Interval Subzone). High biostratigraphic resolution indicates a complete K/Pg transition with no hiatus at the studied section in the Sulaymaniyah area. The ranges of the species recognized in this study are given. Correlations with other sections in Iraq and other parts of the world, including the type Maastrichtian and Danian areas, are discussed and represented in correlation charts, together with the ranges of the important Upper Maastrichtian and Paleocene species. The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 396 to the mid-Norwegian margin recovered > 1300 m of pristinely preserved, volcanic-ash-rich sediments deposited during the late Paleocene and early Eocene from close to the centre of the North Atlantic Igneous Province (NAIP). Remarkably, many of these cores contain glendonites, pseudomorphs after the purported cold-water mineral ikaite, from sediments dated to the late Paleocene and early Eocene. These time intervals span some of the hottest climates of the Cenozoic, including the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). Global deep-ocean temperatures are not thought to have dropped below 10 ∘ C at any point during this time, making the occurrence of supposedly cold-water (near-freezing temperature) glendonite pseudomorphs seemingly paradoxical. This study presents a detailed sedimentological, geochemical, and microscopic study of the IODP Exp. 396 glendonites and presents an updated model for the ikaite-to-calcite transformation for these glendonites. Specifically, we show that early diagenesis of basaltic ashes of the NAIP appear to have chemically promoted ikaite growth in the sediments in this region. Together with existing knowledge of late Paleocene and early Eocene glendonites from Svalbard to the north and early Eocene glendonites from Denmark to the south, these new glendonite finds possibly imply episodic, short-duration, and likely localized cooling in the Nordic Seas region, which may have been directly or indirectly linked to the emplacement of the NAIP. The results of the study of the meristic and morphometric characters of complete and fragmentary skeletons of Notogoneus gracilis (Gonorynchidae) and Boltyshia brevicauda (Umbridae) recovered from Paleocene–Eocene lacustrine deposits of the Boltysh impact structure are presented in the paper. Some of the specimens previously assigned to Thaumaturus avitus were re-identified as Boltyshia brevicauda. The meristic characters of the specimens considered are stable in both species and refer to those in the respective type series. A previously unknown caudal fin formula (I 6–6 I) is observed in several specimens of Boltyshia brevicauda. Changes in fire ecology during warm and cold periods in the geological past are important because of their effects on terrestrial ecosystems and the global carbon cycle. We examined the charcoal concentrations of the Erden Obo section in Inner Mongolia to reconstruct the evolution of wildfire and their relationship to the regional vegetation from the Late Paleocene through Early Oligocene. Our data show that fire frequency were relatively high from the end of the Paleocene to the beginning of the Eocene, in accord with other paleofire records worldwide. However, low fire frequency occurred during the Early Eocene Climate Optimum (EECO), coincident with the change in the regional vegetation from shrubland to forest due to the strengthening of the regional rainfall, and we suggest that the humid climate may have been responsible for this decrease. High frequency fire occurred after the Middle Eocene, near-synchronously with the transition ofthe regional vegetation from forest to steppe. The high-frequency fire was most likely triggered by regional drought during the aridification process after the Middle Eocene. We propose that these temporal changes in the fire ecology were consistent within the northern temperate zone from the Late Paleocene through Early Oligocene, and we suggest that studies of global wildfires need to be evaluated within the context of paleovegetation zones and ecosystem evolution. This article examines the Sangdanlin Paleocene section and its implications for the geological history of the Tethys Himalaya region. The authors use various methods, including field observations and geochronology, to challenge the idea of a large Greater India in the Early Cretaceous. They argue against previous interpretations of the Sangdanlin section and question the paleomagnetic poles selected by other researchers. The authors conclude that the India-Asia collision began around 59 ± 1 Ma at approximately 14° N. Investigating the paleoenvironment and characteristics of source rocks in sedimentary basins is crucial for understanding organic matter accumulation and guiding hydrocarbon exploration. The Lishui Sag, a significant hydrocarbon-bearing depression in the East China Sea, has experienced extensive marine transgression and increasing salinity in the Paleocene, but the changes in accumulation factors of organic matter during this evolution process remain unclear. Through a comprehensive analysis of total organic carbon (TOC), major and trace elements, and biomarker data, this study investigates the characteristics of source rocks from two lithostratigraphic units, namely the Paleocene Yueguifeng and Lingfeng formations, to gain deep insight into the effects of paleoenvironment on organic matter accumulation and hydrocarbon distribution. Our results indicate that the Lishui Sag transitioned from a closed lake to an open-marine environment in the Paleocene, with a shift from warm-humid to arid climate conditions. The biomarker distribution suggests a change in the origin of organic matter, with a higher input of terrestrial organic matter in the Lingfeng Formation. During the early stage, the lacustrine source rocks in the lower Yueguifeng Formation were formed in a relatively humid and anoxic environment within brackish water, resulting in a substantial influx of terrestrial and lacustrine algae organic matter. In contrast, in the late stage, the marine source rocks in the overlying Lingfeng Formation were developed in an arid and oxidizing environment. The lacustrine source rocks in the Yueguifeng Formation were notably more favorable to developing good-quality source rocks. Compared with the other regions, the western and northeastern parts of the study area have greater hydrocarbon generation potential due to the wider distribution of high maturity and organic-rich source rocks, with higher terrestrial and algal organic matter input. The combination of multi-phase extension and pre-existing fault reactivation results in a complex fault pattern within hydrocarbon-bearing basins, affecting hydrocarbon exploration at different stages. We used high-resolution 3D seismic data and well data to reveal the impact of multi-phase extension and pre-existing fault reactivation on Cenozoic fault pattern changes over time in the Jiyang Depression of eastern China. The results show that during the Paleocene, a portion of NW-striking pre-existing faults reactivated under NS extension and controlled the basin structure (type 1). Other parts of the NW-striking pre-existing faults stopped activity and served as weak surfaces, and a series of NNE-striking faults were distributed in an en-echelon pattern along the NW direction at shallow depths (type 2). In areas unaffected by pre-existing faults, NE-striking faults formed perpendicular to regional stresses. During the Eocene, the regional stresses shifted clockwise to near-NS extension, and many EW-striking faults developed within the basin. The NE-striking faults and the EW-striking faults were hard-linked, forming the ENE-striking curved faults that controlled the structure in the basin (type 3). The NNE-striking faults were distinctly strike-slip at this time, with the ENE-striking faults forming a horsetail pattern at their tails. Many ENE-striking faults perpendicular to the extension direction were formed in areas where the basement was more stable and pre-existing faults were not developed (type 4). There were also developing NS-striking faults that were small in scale and appeared in positions overlapping different main faults (type 5). Additionally, different fault patterns can guide different phases of hydrocarbon exploration. Type 1, type 2, and type 3 faults are particularly suitable for early-stage exploration. A new concept of the formation of glauconite from the Paleocene deposits of the sedimentary cover of the southwestern part of the Near-Volga monocline is presented. It was formed as a result of halmyrolysis of ash material in lake conditions. Glauconitization is confined to the Paleogene thermal maximum and the periphery of active volcanism along the entire mobile belt. In this connection, it is widely distributed in the Paleogene deposits. Structural and crystal-chemical features of glauconite, stages of crystallization of its aggregates, paragenetic associations with smectite, kaolinite, and zeolite, as well as the presence of ore minerals indicate its authigenic origin. The authigenic origin is confined to the formations of temporary, episodically submerging shallow marine basins. An applied scheme of discrimination of glauconites by their crystallochemical features has been developed. The discrimination diagram can be used to determine the specific conditions of the sedimentation basin, which are expressed in the progradation cycles of glauconite accumulation. The Sangdanlin section in southern Tibet represents a geologic Rosetta stone to constrain the initiation of the India--Asia collision from its sedimentary and paleomagnetic records. However, geoscientists have arrived at fundamentally divergent interpretations surrounding the age of the strata and its paleomagnetic record. Here, we report paleontologic, petrographic, and paleomagnetic data from the Sangdanlin section that recognize the sequence as a thrust complex containing interlaced Barremian--Albian (Early Cretaceous) and Paleocene strata, each separated by thrust faults. Recognizing two complexly interwoven formations of distinctly different ages contradicts a continuous stratigraphic superposition. Assigning an Early Cretaceous, instead of Paleocene, age to the units collected for paleomagnetic data revises paleogeographic models thereby supporting a large (2,000 to 3,000 km) extent of Greater India, with collision initiating at 55 ± 5 Ma in the western Himalayas. A contiguous plate in the Neotethys Ocean precludes that Asia's southern margin was built through a succession of accreted terrains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the northeastern zone of the department of Boyacá, in the locality of Socha, areas with a high fossiliferous potential of microvertebrates and vertebrates, as fish, crocodiles and, particularly, turtles, of middle and upper Paleocene age of the Arcillolitas de Socha Formation have been identified. Along this sector, detailed stratigraphic sections and geological profiles were elaborated, which together with lithostratigraphic and biostratigraphic techniques, allowed us to differentiate the formation into three members and to identify the prospecting areas of two fossiliferous levels of interest, as well as a group of key sandstones located in the intermediate levels. The paleoenvironments identified for the formation indicate a lagoonal, marshy, paludal, and deltaic sedimentation for the sandstones, generally sedimented in a continental depositional environment. All the information obtained could be applied for the eventual location of fossils in prospecting and exploration in subsequent research, as well as highlighting the imperative need to strengthen local laws in favor of the protection and preservation of these paleontological deposits in the region. The Yarkand Basin, located in the southwest of the Tarim Basin, is a northeastern part of the eastern Paratethys ocean in the Paleocene, and a significant amount of evaporites, with gypsum, anhydrite, and halite as the main types, were developed in this area. These evaporites record the sedimentary environment at that time. A study was conducted on the sulfur isotopic composition of gypsum in the Paleocene of the Yarkand Basin to explore the origin of the evaporites and interpret the sedimentary environment. The experimentally measured sulfur isotope δ34SCDT values of 187 gypsum samples ranged from 6.69‰ to 25.92‰ with an average value of 18.64‰. The overall trend of the Paleocene gypsum sulfur isotopic curve is consistent with the global seawater sulfur isotopic curve, which shows a decreasing trend. In the early and middle Paleocene, the curve shows four stages of sulfur isotope increase, indicating that the sedimentary environment during that time was mainly influenced by bacterial reduction and a relatively open sedimentary environment, while the late period shows a decreasing trend, suggesting that the late period may be primarily influenced by terrigenous freshwater. In addition, the sulfur isotope value has the characteristics of decreasing from northwest to southeast of the basin, which may indicate that the sedimentary environment of Paleocene evaporites in the Yarkand Basin may also be related to paleotopography and distance from the estuary, resulting in differences in sedimentary environments. The mainly original sulfur isotope values of the Paleocene evaporites in the Yarkand Basin should be in the range of 18‰–20‰, which is a supplement to the Paleocene global paleoseawater and is of great significance for the reconstruction of the marine transgressive–regressive cycle and sulfur isotopic composition of the eastern Paratethys ocean during this period. Impact melt rocks formed during hypervelocity impact events are ideal for studying impact structures. Here, we describe impact melt rock samples collected proximal to the 31 km wide 58 Ma Hiawatha impact structure, northwest Greenland, which is completely covered by the Greenland Ice Sheet. The melt rocks contain diagnostic shock indicators (e.g., planar deformation features [PDF] in quartz and shocked zircon) and form three groups based on melt textures and chemistry: (i) hypocrystalline, (ii) glassy, and (iii) carbonate‐based melt rocks. The exposed foreland directly in front of the structure consists of metasedimentary successions and igneous plutons; however, the carbonate‐based impactites indicate a mixed target sequence with a significant carbonate‐rich component. Well‐preserved organic material in some melt rocks indicates that North Greenland at the time of impact was host to abundant organic material, likely a dense high‐latitude temperate forest. Geochemical signatures of platinum‐group elements in selected samples indicate an extraterrestrial component and support previous identification of a highly fractionated iron impactor in glaciofluvial sand. Our results illustrate the possibility to study impact structures hidden beneath a thick ice sheet based on transported samples and this opens a new avenue for identifying other potential impact craters in Greenland and Antarctica. We investigated leaf, cone and fruit impressions preserved in a siltstone deposit between coal seams in the late Paleocene Tongue River Member near Otter, southeast Montana, to assess the floristic diversity and composition. We document the presence of Taxodium based on seed cone scales as well as foliage branches and associated pollen cones, and a low-diversity angiosperm assemblage of about 15 genera dominated by Platanaceae (Platanus, Macginitiea, Macginistemon) and Cornales (Cornus, Davidia, Amersinia, Browniea), cf. Trochodendraceae (Zizyphoides, Nordenskioeldia), augmented by Aesculus, Trochodendroides, Ulmites and Porosia. Most of these genera were widespread in the Paleocene of the Northern Hemisphere. The low diversity of this florule is consistent with that of Tiffanian assemblages elsewhere in Montana and Wyoming. The late Paleocene–early Eocene warm greenhouse conditions, characterized by elevated pCO2 levels in the atmosphere and a dramatic increase in sea surface temperature, prompted abundant authigenic glauconite formation within the shallow marine sediments worldwide by lowering the net sedimentation rate, increasing organic productivity and expanding the oxygen minimum zones to shallow oceans. The early Eocene marginal marine Cambay Shale Formation experienced episodes of marine inundation represented by limestone–green shale alternations. The shales host abundant authigenic light-green, dark-green, and brown pellets. A detailed characterization of the pellets of the Valia and Vastan lignite mines, integrating the sedimentological, petrographical, mineralogical, and mineral geochemical data, suggests two distinct varieties of Fe–silicate formation, viz. glauconite and chamosite. While the glauconitic green pellets are ubiquitous to Valia and Vastan mines, brown chamosite pellets are confined within the basal part of the green shale facies alternating with fossiliferous limestone in the Vastan mine. The glauconites of the Valia mine manifest a 'nascent' to 'slightly evolved' maturation stage of glauconitization, whereas the glauconites of the Vastan mine represent the 'evolved' type. The limestone–green shale alternation in the Valia mine is overlain by a ~4 m-thick spherulitic mudstone facies comprising monomineralic sideritic spherulites, reflecting a pure FeCO3 composition. The glauconites in the Cambay Shale Formation transformed from kaolinite-rich clay pellets under dys-oxic depositional conditions. The increasing anoxicity within the microenvironment, possibly amplified by the rapid oxidation of continent-derived organic matter, facilitated chamosite formation instead of glauconite. The increased freshwater influx into the marginal marine depositional environment resulted in immature, K-poor glauconites of the Valia mine. New decapod crustaceans from ?Selandian to Thanetian strata of the Kambühel Formation, Austria, include the paguroid Squamipelta insecta new genus and species, and two new galatheoid species, Protomunida kambuehelensis and Annieporcellana paleocenica. The range of Annieporcellana is extended across the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary. Selandian and Thanetian decapod occurrences are rare; thus, this report adds to the known decapod diversity in the recovery after the end-Cretaceous events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New brachyuran species from the ?Selandian to Thanetian units of the Kambühel Formation include Dromiopsis bullamelga, Dromiopsis aedicula, and Braggicarpilius wanzenboecki. Four previously named brachyuran species are also present. Carpiliidae is both the only extant family present and the only family represented in the Kambühel Formation to originate after the end-Cretaceous. Half of the genera present in the Kambühel Formation (Dromiopsis, Caloxanthus, and Titanocarcinus) survived the end-Cretaceous mass extinction event, and all of the surviving genera originated during the Cretaceous. All of the identified species originated in the Paleocene. 87.5 % of species and 95 % of individual specimens found by two of us (RMF, CES) in one day of collecting at Fakse Quarry are podotrematous, while 80 % of species and 46 % of individual specimens found in the Kambühel Formation are podotrematous. This study reports on the detrital zircon provenance of the sandstones of Early Paleocene Ranikot Formation exposed in the Fort Munro section, Sulaiman fold-thrust belt, Pakistan. This marks the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary sequence. The detrital zircon U-Pb ages reported are mainly clustered around ~460–1100 Ma, ~1600–1900 Ma and ~2300–2600 Ma. The age cluster ~460–1100 Ma is mainly matched well with the Tethyan Himalaya. However, the age clusters ~1600–1900 Ma and ~2300–2600 Ma matched fairly with the lesser Himalayas and Higher Himalayas. In addition, the sandstone petrography suggests the craton interior provenance. The two younger Cretaceous zircon ages may be derived from the Tethyan Himalaya volcanic rocks as supported by a high (>0.3) Th/U ratio. Furthermore, the absence of the ophiolitic component ~115–178 Ma suggests that the western ophiolite may be emplaced at the same time as Ranikot Formation deposited or later. Moreover, the absence of the Eurasian (zircon with ages <100 Ma) in the Ranikot Formation excludes the possibility of the early collision along the western margin, as reported in earlier studies. A new pleurodiran turtle is described here. It is identified as attributable to Bothremydidae. The new taxon comes from an upper Maastrichtian (Upper Cretaceous) outcrop located in Southwestern Niger (in the Indamane Mount area, belonging to the Abalak Department of the Tahoua Region). Abalakemys chapmanae gen. et sp. nov. is identified by an almost complete large shell of about 65 cm in length. The new bothremydid turtle is recognized as a member of Bothremydodda, showing several autapomorphies (an exclusive ornamental pattern on the plate's outer surface, covered by small depressions; small fourth pleural scutes, only anteromedially reaching the sixth pair of costal plates; and noticeably wedged posterior plastral lobe toward the posterior region), as well as a unique combination of characters for this clade. This turtle could belong to Nigeremydini, a poorly understood Maastrichtian to Paleocene lineage of Bothremydodda, which integrates large coastal taxa that inhabited the African Trans-Saharan seaway, and for which shell information is currently extremely limited. The importance of topography generated by Eocene Eurekan deformation as a sediment source for sandstones deposited on the western Barents Shelf margin is evaluated through a sediment provenance study conducted on wellbore materials retrieved from Spitsbergen and from the Vestbakken Volcanic Province and the Sørvestsnaget Basin in the southwest Barents Sea. A variety of complementary techniques record a provenance change across the Paleocene-Eocene boundary in wellbore BH 10-2008, which samples Paleogene strata of the Central Tertiary Basin in Spitsbergen. Sandstones containing K-feldspar with radiogenic Pb isotopic compositions, chrome spinel in the heavy mineral assemblage, and detrital zircons and rutiles with prominent Palaeoproterozoic and Late Palaeozoic—Early Mesozoic U-Pb age populations are up-section replaced by sandstone containing albitic plagioclase feldspar, metasedimentary schist rock fragments, a heavy mineral assemblage with abundant chloritoid, metamorphic apatite with low REE contents, metapelitic rutile with Silurian U-Pb ages and zircons with predominantly Archaean and Palaeoproterozoic U-Pb age populations. Our results clearly demonstrate the well-known regional change in source area from an exposed Barents Shelf terrain east of the Central Tertiary Basin during the Paleocene to the emerging Eurekan mountains west and north of the Central Tertiary Basin during the Eocene. Eocene sandstones deposited in the marginal basins of the southwestern Barents Shelf, which were sampled in wellbores 7316/5-1 and 7216/11-1S, contain elements of both the Eurekan and the eastern Barents Shelf provenance signatures. The mixing of the two sand types and delivery to the southwest margin of the Barents Shelf is consistent with a fill and spill model for the Central Teritary Basin, with transport of Eurekan-derived sediment east then south hundreds of kilometres across the Shelf. To clarify the organic matter (OM) enrichment of the Lishui Sag, the factors influencing the variable abundance of OM in the Lingfeng Formation are studied using organic geochemical data. The source rocks of the Lingfeng Formation have medium–high total organic carbon (TOC) values (0.53–3.56%). The main type of kerogen is II2-III. Compared to the shallow marine subfacies source rocks, the TOC of the delta front subfacies source rocks is higher. The distribution of biomarkers shows that the redox environment of the delta front subfacies source rock is the sub-oxidizing and oxic environment, and the source rock is mainly supplied by terrigenous higher plants; the redox environment of shallow marine subfacies source rocks is a sub-reducing and suboxic environment, and the OM mainly comes from algae. The link between OM input and OM abundance demonstrates that terrigenous OM (TOM) input has a considerable influence on OM abundance. However, there is no obvious relationship between preservation and OM abundance, which suggests that preservation is not the determining element in OM enrichment. The strong sediment flux decreases the amount of time that OM is exposed to oxygen. As a result, delta front subfacies with large TOM input have a huge number of excellent source rocks. We describe nearly complete skeletons of basal Anseriformes from the Latest Paleocene to the early Eocene of North America and Europe. Collectively, these birds appear to be representative of anseriforms near the divergence of Anhimae and Anseres, but their exact positions relative to these clades remains uncertain. A new family, Anachronornithidae nov. fam., is erected on the basis of one of these, Anachronornis anhimops nov. gen., nov. gen. et sp., to which the others cannot be confidently assigned. The new fossils augment a growing collection of early Pan-Anseriformes, which in their diversity do not paint an unambiguous picture of phylogeny or character state evolution on the path to or within crown-Anseriformes. Anachronornis nov. gen. is similar in some aspects of both cranial and postcranial anatomy to other well-represented early Paleogene Anseriformes and members of Anseres, such as Presbyornis Wetmore, 1926. However, it exhibits a more landfowl-like bill, like that of Anhimae and unlike the spatulate bill of Anseres. Additional specimens of similar basal Anseriformes of uncertain affinities from the early Eocene of North America and Europe further complicate interpretation of character state polarity due to the mosaicism of primitive and derived characters they exhibit. In contrast to the rich collections of articulated spiny-rayed fishes from early Late Cretaceous and Eocene Lagerstätten, similar skeletal remains are sparse in Maastrichtian-Paleocene strata. Here we coin this poorly understood span "Patterson's Gap" and review known articulated skeletons from it, summarizing available information on their phylogenetic affinities, age, and environmental context. Roughly fifty percent of taxa in both the Maastrichtian and Paleocene come from Europe and North America, with percomorphs representing around 60% of the skeletal acanthomorph taxa in each interval. This is higher than the only pre-Maastrichtian assemblage with a reasonable sample of percomorphs, but lower than most Eocene and younger sites. Fossils from Patterson's Gap show a steady accumulation of the principal lineages of spiny-rayed fishes. Material from Paleocene or older strata provides evidence for most of the roughly 20 major acanthomorph divisions recovered by molecular studies. Many fossils from Patterson's Gap remain undescribed and unnamed, and almost none have been included within formal phylogenetic analyses. Revision of existing material, combined with additional fieldwork, should be a priority for future efforts seeking to clarify this murky but significant interval in the evolutionary history of a major vertebrate radiation. Tubes of a new serpulid species, Neovermilia gundstrupensis sp. nov., from the lower part of the Kerteminde Marl Formation (Selandian, middle Paleocene) of Gundstrup gravel pit, Fyn, Denmark, represent the first serpulids of this group from the Selandian of Denmark. Within the long-ranging genus Neovermilia (Oxfordian to Recent), the new finds extend the last recorded occurrence of an informal sub-group of closely related serpulids from the upper Danian to the lower Selandian. Neovermilia gundstrupensis is characterized by a tube increasing only slowly in diameter reaching up to approximately 5 mm and possessing small, often densely spaced annular striae occasionally merging into weakly but never strongly developed annular peristomes. Almost all specimens found so far are attached to siliceous sponges of the genus Ventriculites. The Maastrichtian-Thanetian Ncham Member of the Aurès Basin in northeastern Algeria contains variably lenticular microfossils, which are defined as Laffitteina genera. It is a large benthic foraminifera, studied from three stratigraphic sections. The systematic study of Laffitteina led identification of nine species, four of which, Laffitteina marsicana, L. aff. mengaudi, L. monodi and L. erki were recorded for the first time in the study area. Various species of Laffitteina were used as index fossils to recognize the K/Pg transition in the Aurès Basin. The last occurrence of L. oztuerki marks the end of the Maastrichtian, which was found in association with Omphalocyclus macroporus (Lamarck) in the upper Maastrichtian. The first occurrence of L. erki marks the Thanetian age, while the Danian and Selandian deposits are missing in the field after a general emersion in the early Paleocene, despite the absence of a visible non unconformity. It could therefore be proposed that the K/Pg transition may occurs in the last 10 m of the Ncham Member. Concerning the paleoenvironment, Laffitteina is considered as a resistant foraminifera and thrives in meso-to eutrophic environments (lagoon). Microfacies data from the Upper Cretaceous-Lower Paleogene limestones of the Aurès Basin suggests a carbonate platform with shallowing-up sequential organization, mainly controlled by fluctuations in sea-level. A new fossil occurrence of freshwater sponges (Porifera: Demospongiae) is reported from the Deccan volcanic associated Naskal intertrappean locality, deposited in an interval of <100 kyr across the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary. This is the oldest record of siliceous fossil birotule spicules (gemmuloscleres) belonging to asexual resting stages typical of the order Spongillida. The analysis supports the ascription of these fossils to the family Palaeospongillidae. The diagnosis and description of Longibirotula Pronzato and Manconi gen. nov. and its type species Longibirotula antiqua Manconi and Samant sp. nov. from the Naskal intertrappean is based on skeletal and gemmular spicular morphotraits. The findings have provided evidence of the presence of diversified groups of freshwater sponges during the Late Cretaceous on the Indian subcontinent and Gondwanaland. Sea turtles (Testudines: Chelonioidea) represent a monophyletic group with a global distribution in the fossil record, although most of our knowledge of their diversity and morphology comes from the Atlantic Ocean and Tethyan Sea (Evers and Benson 2019; Gentry et al. 2019). By contrast, the record of their evolution in the vast Pacific Basin prior to the Neogene is paltry. Late Cretaceous chelonioids are known from northern California (Parham et al. 2003), British Columbia (Nicholls 1992; Nicholls and Meckert 2002), Japan (Hirayama and Chitoku 1996), Australia (Kear et al. 2003; Kear 2006; Kear and Lee 2006), and New Zealand (Wiffen 1981), indicating they occupied at least portions of both the North and South Pacific Oceans at this time. Pacific Paleocene specimens are entirely unknown, and to date the Eocene record has been limited to chelonioids and dermochelyids (Köhler 1995a, b; Grant-Mackie et al. 2011) from New Zealand, and an informal report of a sea turtle from Oregon (Orr and Orr 2009). Here, we describe a new sea turtle fossil from the middle Eocene of California which demonstrates that members of this clade were indeed present in the North Pacific at this time. The Paleocene Lockhart Formation of Hazara Basin Lesser Himalayas of Pakistan was deposited in the package of shelf carbonates after the second disconformity transgression of Tethys. Three hundred thirteen (313) thin sections were prepared and stained for petrography from this section. The measured Chhangla Galli section is about 60 m thick of Lockhart Formation in Hazara Basin. Nine microfacies Mudstones, Rotaliidae Wackstones / Packstones, Miscelaneidae Wackstones / Packstones, Bioclastic Wackstone / Packstone, and Algal Wackstones / Packstones have been established and geochemically analyzed. The study shows that this formation deposited in shallow marine subtidal to the tidal marine environment of deposition environment of a carbonate platform (inner to mid ramp). The study includes biostratigraphy and micropaleontology of Paleocene carbonates of the Chhangla Gali section. Twenty-three (23) representative samples selected for major and trace elements (Ca, Mg, Sr, Mn, Fe and Na) analysis of the carbonates are reflected diagenetic and depositional environment. The research work involves rock physics modeling and reservoir characterization of Suliman fold belt to sulamain fold depression. This area is a brighter zone for hydrocarbon exploration there are several discoveries of gas reserves in this area but there is still needed to estimate seismic characteristics of reflection amplitude properly for further discoveries. Therefore, in this research work we have estimated amplitude offset, inverse quality factor and reservoir characterization of Cretaceous and Paleocene strata of Dhodak-01 & 05, Savi Ragha-01 wells lie in Sulaiman fold belt and Litra formation of Ramak-01 well lie in Sulaiman Depression. To identify the production and reservoir zones. Second part of the research involves the sub surface stratigraphic correlation of Sulaiman fold belt to Sulaiman Depression. To quantify reservoir different well logs are used which are gamma ray log, neutron log, SP log, resistivity logs, sonic log, and density log. Based on different variation trend of well log curves of different zones of interest have been marked. Furthermore, inverse quality factor responses for gas reserves at different porosities showing that maximum variation is observed at low saturation of gas. The Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) contact interval is constrained by vertebrate fossil sites at seven sites in the Tornillo Group and lies within an 80–100-m stratigraphic section between the top of the Javelina Formation and the base of the “log jam sandstone” marker bed in the Black Peaks Formation. In western exposures of this interval, the highest occurrence of in situ dinosaur specimens and the lowest occurrence of Paleocene mammal specimens are separated by an unusual conglomerate bed. This thin conglomerate bed coincides with the contact between Cretaceous and Paleogene strata and contains reworked Cretaceous fossils. It is superficially similar to conglomerate beds elsewhere attributed to the effects of tsunamis generated by the Chicxulub impact; however, the maximum depositional age of ca. 63 Ma based on detrital zircons indicates that the conglomerate was deposited about three million years after the K-Pg boundary event. Paleocene mammalian fossils from immediately above the conglomerate bed represent a fauna that can be no older than the middle Torrejonian (To2 interval zone). The contact between Cretaceous and Paleocene strata is therefore disconformal and represents a hiatus of at least three million years. A condensed section occurs at the westernmost exposure of the K-Pg contact, where at least 80 m of strata are absent below the conglomerate bed; these strata are present in exposures farther east. This condensed section likely records an erosional event resulting from uplift and deformation of the nearby Terlingua monocline. Although the 80 m of strata below the conglomerate bed are poorly fossiliferous, several clearly in situ dinosaur specimens indicate that this entire interval is Late Cretaceous in age. There is no compelling evidence for preservation of the K-Pg boundary event horizon at any of the seven sites in the Tornillo Group, and so the hiatus represented at the Cretaceous/ Paleocene contact here likely also includes some part of latest Cretaceous time. Mammalian specimens from sites in the “log jam sandstone,” ~40 m above the middle Torrejonian sites, represent an early Tiffanian fauna (Ti1 interval zone). Latest Torrejonian (To3) sites have not been recognized, and therefore a second disconformity likely coincides with the base of the “log jam sandstone” marker horizon in the Black Peaks Formation. Plant megafossils from the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) in the Bighorn Basin, north-central Wyoming, USA, document a dramatic shift in floral composition, whereas palynofloral change from the same sections has appeared to be more subtle. We investigated this discrepancy by quantifying pollen preservation and measuring the stable carbon isotope composition of specific pollen taxa. Pollen grains belonging to two common latest Paleocene taxa are poorly preserved in PETM samples, and their δ13Cpollen is similar during the latest Paleocene and PETM. In contrast, pollen grains of a thermophilic taxon that became more abundant during the PETM are pristine, and the δ13Cpollen of PETM specimens is ~4%o lower than that of latest Paleocene specimens. More broadly, pollen grains belonging to lineages currently centered in temperate climates are poorly preserved when found in PETM samples, whereas in the same samples, pollen belonging to lineages now centered in the tropics are well preserved. These differences in preservation and isotopic composition indicate extensive redeposition of older pollen grains during the PETM. Increased abundance of Cretaceous palynotaxa in PETM samples confirms erosion and redeposition, likely resulting from more episodic and intense precipitation. Exclusion of reworked palynotaxa from analyses reveals that, as in the megaflora, temperate taxa were absent during the PETM at the time when dry tropical taxa briefly appeared. Major climate changes like the PETM may commonly destabilize landscapes, increase reworking, and thus smooth patterns of change in microfloras, leading to underestimates of the rate and magnitude of floral response to past global change. Field investigation, biostratigraphic, paleoecological, and sedimentary microfacies analyses, as well as diagenetic processes characterization, were carried out in the Epirus region (Western Ionian Basin) to define the depositional environments and further decipher the diagenetic history of the Late Cretaceous–Early Paleocene carbonate succession in western continental Greece. Planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy of the studied carbonates revealed that the investigated part of the Gardiki section covers the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K-Pg) transition, partly reflecting the Senonian limestone and calciturbidites formations of the Ionian zone stratigraphy. Litho-and bio-facies analyses allowed for the recognition of three distinct depositional facies: (a) the latest Maastrichtian pelagic biomicrite mudstone with in situ planktonic foraminifera, radiolarians, and filaments, (b) a pelagic biomicrite packstone with abundant planktonic foraminifera at the K-Pg boundary, and (c) an early Paleocene pelagic biomicrite wackestone with veins, micritized radiolarians, and mixed planktonic fauna in terms of in situ and reworked (aberrant or broken) planktonic foraminifera. The documented sedimentary facies characterize a relatively low to medium energy deep environment, representing the transition from the deep basin to the deep shelf and the toe of the slope crossing the K-Pg boundary. Micropaleontological and paleoecological analyses of the samples demonstrate that primary productivity collapse is a key proximate cause of this extinction event. Additional petrographic analyses showed that the petrophysical behavior and reservoir characteristics of the study deposits are controlled by the depositional environment (marine, meteoric, and burial diagenetic) and further influenced by diagenetic processes such as micritization, compaction, cementation, dissolution, and fracturing. Numerous bottom current-controlled depositional and erosional features, which together form Contourite Depositional Systems (CDS), have been recognized in deep-water settings over the past decade. Most of these systems are described based on two-dimensional (2D) seismic data, whereas only a few CDS have been characterised from high-resolution 3D data. Here we document a newly identified CDS that formed during the Paleocene within the Morondava Basin, offshore west Madagascar, through analysis of a depth-migrated 3D seismic survey, enhanced by the implementation of seismic attributes. Three seismic units (SU) mark the main evolutionary stages of the CDS: (a) the onset (SU1), (b) drift growth (SU2), and (c) burial (SU3) stages. The growth stage documents lateral upslope migration of a mounded drift and its associated moat. The increasing, long-term influence of bottom currents along the foot of the slope occurred simultaneously with plate tectonic, climatic and oceanographic changes. Evidence amassed from the CDS highly erosive bounding discontinuities, internal discontinuities, and moat architecture all indicate the intermittent behaviour of the currents over shorter time frames during its formation. Drift deposits form under the influence of weaker currents, while discontinuities appear to record the most vigorous currents, producing the large-scale morphology of the system. The methane trapped in the coal seams has emerged as an unconventional clean energy resource worldwide in this century. The proximate composition, ultimate content, cleat structure, porosity type, and pore structures are the debatable components for its trapping mechanism. Further, the brittle and ductile properties of minerals influence in the extraction of the methane from the coal seams. In this research, Coalbed methane prospect is demonstrated by analysing the Hangu Formation's coal seam of Trans-Indus Ranges, Pakistan. This case study is helpful to find the occurrence, trapping ability, and methane extraction capacity in its cleat structures and pores. A number of samples were tested from the different coal mines in terms of these debatable components. The results indicate that the rank of studied coal is bituminous to subbituminous in which the carbon ratio, volatile matter, and sulfur contents are increasing with depth towards the south. The transitional connected face and butt cleats are partially filled with minerals and the intergranular, dissolved, and tissue pore types are also identified in it. It can be helpful for the occurrence, migration, and trapping of methane. Furthermore, the higher surface areas and cumulative pore volumes enhance the capacity of gas adsorption with depth in the study area. Moreover, the increasing brittle minerals in the coal composition towards the south can be helpful for the fracking of coal seams for economical gas extraction.
