Despite its significant promise and continuous technical advances, real-world applications of artificial intelligence (AI) remain limited. We attribute this to the "domain expert-AI-conundrum": while domain experts, such as clinician scientists, should be able to build predictive models such as risk scores, they face substantial barriers in accessing state-of-the-art (SOTA) tools. While automated machine learning (AutoML) has been proposed as a partner in clinical predictive modeling, many additional requirements need to be fulfilled to make machine learning accessible for clinician scientists. To address this gap, we introduce CliMB, a no-code AI-enabled partner designed to empower clinician scientists to create predictive models using natural language. CliMB guides clinician scientists through the entire medical data science pipeline, thus empowering them to create predictive models from real-world data in just one conversation. CliMB also creates structured reports and interpretable visuals. In evaluations involving clinician scientists and systematic comparisons against a baseline GPT-4, CliMB consistently demonstrated superior performance in key areas such as planning, error prevention, code execution, and model performance. Moreover, in blinded assessments involving 45 clinicians from diverse specialties and career stages, more than 80% preferred CliMB over GPT-4. Instruments for gamma-ray astronomy at Very High Energies ($E>100\,{\rm GeV}$) have traditionally derived their scientific results through proprietary data and software. Data standardisation has become a prominent issue in this field both as a requirement for the dissemination of data from the next generation of gamma-ray observatories and as an effective solution to realise public data legacies of current-generation instruments. Specifications for a standardised gamma-ray data format have been proposed as a community effort and have already been successfully adopted by several instruments. We present the first production of standardised data from the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes. We converted $166\,{\rm h}$ of observations from different sources and validated their analysis with the open-source software Gammapy. We consider six data sets representing different scientific and technical analysis cases and compare the results obtained analysing the standardised data with open-source software against those produced with the MAGIC proprietary data and software. Aiming at a systematic production of MAGIC data in this standardised format, we also present the implementation of a database-driven pipeline automatically performing the MAGIC data reduction from the calibrated down to the standardised data level. In all the cases selected for the validation, we obtain results compatible with the MAGIC proprietary software, both for the manual and for the automatic data productions. Part of the validation data set is also made publicly available, thus representing the first large public release of MAGIC data. Allocation tasks represent a class of problems where a limited amount of resources must be allocated to a set of entities at each time step. Prominent examples of this task include portfolio optimization or distributing computational workloads across servers. Allocation tasks are typically bound by linear constraints describing practical requirements that have to be strictly fulfilled at all times. In portfolio optimization, for example, investors may be obligated to allocate less than 30\% of the funds into a certain industrial sector in any investment period. Such constraints restrict the action space of allowed allocations in intricate ways, which makes learning a policy that avoids constraint violations difficult. In this paper, we propose a new method for constrained allocation tasks based on an autoregressive process to sequentially sample allocations for each entity. In addition, we introduce a novel de-biasing mechanism to counter the initial bias caused by sequential sampling. We demonstrate the superior performance of our approach compared to a variety of Constrained Reinforcement Learning (CRL) methods on three distinct constrained allocation tasks: portfolio optimization, computational workload distribution, and a synthetic allocation benchmark. Objective: To propose a mathematical model for applying Ionization Detail (ID), the detailed spatial distribution of ionization along a particle track, to proton and ion beam radiotherapy treatment planning (RTP). Approach: Our model provides for selection of preferred ID parameters (I_p) for RTP, that associate closest to biological effects. Cluster dose is proposed to bridge the large gap between nanoscopic I_p and macroscopic RTP. Selection of I_p is demonstrated using published cell survival measurements for protons through argon, comparing results for nineteen Ip: N_k; k = 2,3,...,10, the number of ionizations in clusters of k or more per particle, and F_k; k = 1,2,...,10, the number of clusters of k or more per particle. We then describe application of the model to ID-based RTP and propose a path to clinical translation. Main results: The preferred I_p were N_4 and F_5 for aerobic cells, N_5 and F_7 for hypoxic cells. Signifcant differences were found in cell survival for beams having the same LET or the preferred N_k. Conversely, there was no signi?cant difference for F_5 for aerobic cells and F_7 for hypoxic cells, regardless of ion beam atomic number or energy. Further, cells irradiated with the same cluster dose for these I_p had the same cell survival. Based on these preliminary results and other compelling results in nanodosimetry, it is reasonable to assert that I_p exist that are more closely associated with biological effects than current LET-based approaches and microdosimetric RBE-based models used in particle RTP. However, more biological variables such as cell line and cycle phase, as well as ion beam pulse structure and rate still need investigation. Coherent Diffraction Imaging (CDI) is an experimental technique to get images of isolated structures by recording the light scattered off the sample. Thanks to the extremely bright and short coherent light pulses provided by X-ray Free Electron Lasers, CDI makes it possible to study nanostructures in the gas phase and get time-resolved snapshots of their ultrafast dynamics with unprecedented resolution. In principle, the sample density can be recovered from the scattered light field through a straightforward Fourier Transform operation. However, only the amplitude of the field is recorded, while the phase is lost during the measurement process and has to be retrieved by means of suitable, well-established, phase retrieval algorithms. We present the Memetic Phase Retrieval (MPR) method, an improved approach to the phase retrieval problem, which makes use of a combination of existing phase retrieval algorithms and evolutionary algorithms to mitigate the shortcomings of conventional approaches. We benchmark the method on experimental data acquired in two experimental campaigns at SwissFEL and European XFEL. Imaging results on isolated nanostructures reveal considerable stability of the algorithm's behavior on the input parameters, as well as the capability of identifying the solution in challenging conditions. Maximizing the power conversion efficiency of solar cells plays a crucial role in upscaling solar energy production. Combining two or more solar cells with different bandgaps into a multi-junction tandem solar cells lowers thermalization losses and increases the power conversion efficiency. Whilst the best efficiencies have been achieved by vertically stacking solar cells, the fabrication process is technologically demanding and leads to high production costs. Novel photovoltaic materials such as organic photovoltaics allow solution processing, which enables the cost effective production of lateral multijunctions, where the single subcells are aligned side by side. To fully unlock their optimal performance, lateral tandems require careful light management, redirecting different spectral bands to the corresponding solar cell. So far, solar spectral splitters suffered from a strong angle dependency, which caused a degradation in performance at the slightest deviation from normal incidence. In this contribution, we reduce this limitation and achieve an enhancement in the conversion efficiency across a wide range of incident angles by inverse designing a solar spectral splitter comprised of two free-form microstructured surfaces on the top and bottom of a supporting glass substrate. Moreover, thanks to the versatility of our methodology, we can tailor the angle-dependent functionality of our device. As such, we also design devices that are optimized to provide enhanced performance at certain oblique angles, which correspond to different times of the day, e.g., when the unit price of energy is higher.

The zero-shot chain of thought (CoT) approach is often used in question answering (QA) by language models (LMs) for tasks that require multiple reasoning steps, typically enhanced by the prompt "Let's think step by step." However, some QA tasks hinge more on accessing relevant knowledge than on chaining reasoning steps. We introduce a simple general prompting technique, called PREP, that involves using two instances of LMs: the first (LM1) generates relevant information, and the second (LM2) answers the question based on this information. PREP is designed to be general and independent of the user's domain knowledge, making it applicable across various QA tasks without the need for specialized prompt engineering. To evaluate the effectiveness of our prompting method, we create a dataset of 100 binary-choice questions, derived from an extensive schematic dataset on artifact parts and material composition. These questions ask which of two artifacts is less likely to share materials with another artifact. Such questions probe the LM's knowledge of shared materials in the part structure of different artifacts. We test our method on our dataset and three published commonsense reasoning datasets. The average accuracy of our method is consistently higher than that of all the other tested methods across all the tested datasets.

Generating physician letters is a time-consuming task in daily clinical practice. This study investigates local fine-tuning of large language models (LLMs), specifically LLaMA models, for physician letter generation in a privacy-preserving manner within the field of radiation oncology. Our findings demonstrate that base LLaMA models, without fine-tuning, are inadequate for effectively generating physician letters. The QLoRA algorithm provides an efficient method for local intra-institutional fine-tuning of LLMs with limited computational resources (i.e., a single 48 GB GPU workstation within the hospital). The fine-tuned LLM successfully learns radiation oncology-specific information and generates physician letters in an institution-specific style. ROUGE scores of the generated summary reports highlight the superiority of the 8B LLaMA-3 model over the 13B LLaMA-2 model. Further multidimensional physician evaluations of 10 cases reveal that, although the fine-tuned LLaMA-3 model has limited capacity to generate content beyond the provided input data, it successfully generates salutations, diagnoses and treatment histories, recommendations for further treatment, and planned schedules. Overall, clinical benefit was rated highly by the clinical experts (average score of 3.44 on a 4-point scale). With careful physician review and correction, automated LLM-based physician letter generation has significant practical value.

Ge two-dimensional hole gases in strained modulation-doped quantum-wells represent a promising material platform for future spintronic applications due to their excellent spin transport properties and the theoretical possibility of efficient spin manipulation. Due to the continuous development of epitaxial growth recipes extreme high hole mobilities and low effective masses can be achieved, promising an efficient spin transport. Furthermore, the Ge two-dimensional hole gas (2DHG) can be integrated in the well-established industrial complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) devices technology. However, efficient electrical spin injection into a Ge 2DHG - a prerequisite for the realization of spintronic devices - has not yet been demonstrated. In this work, we report the fabrication and low-temperature magnetoresistance measurements of a laterally structured Mn5Ge3/Ge 2DHG/ Mn5Ge3 device. The ferromagnetic Mn5Ge3 contacts are grown directly into the Ge quantum well by means of an interdiffusion process with a spacing of approximately 130 nm. We observe a magnetoresistance signal for temperatures below 13 K possibly arising from successful spin injection. Achieving optimal solubility of active substances in polymeric carriers is of fundamental importance for a number of industrial applications, including targeted drug delivery within the growing field of nanomedicine. However, its experimental optimization using a trial-and-error approach is cumbersome and time-consuming. Here, an approach based on molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and the Flory-Huggins theory is proposed for rapid prediction of thermodynamic compatibility between active species and copolymers comprising hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments. In contrast to similar methods, our approach offers high computational efficiency by employing MD simulations that avoid explicit consideration of the actual copolymer chains. The accuracy of the method is demonstrated for compatibility predictions between pyrene and nile red as model dyes as well as indomethacin as model drug and copolymers containing blocks of poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(lactic acid) in different ratios. The results of the simulations are directly verified by comparison with the observed encapsulation efficiency of nanoparticles prepared by nanoprecipitation.

Visual SLAM is a key technology for many autonomous systems. However, tracking loss can lead to the creation of disjoint submaps in multimap SLAM systems like ORB-SLAM3. Because of that, these systems employ submap merging strategies. As we show, these strategies are not always successful. In this paper, we investigate the impact of using modern VPR approaches for submap merging in visual SLAM. We argue that classical evaluation metrics are not sufficient to estimate the impact of a modern VPR component on the overall system. We show that naively replacing the VPR component does not leverage its full potential without requiring substantial interference in the original system. Because of that, we present a post-processing pipeline along with a set of metrics that allow us to estimate the impact of modern VPR components. We evaluate our approach on the NCLT and Newer College datasets using ORB-SLAM3 with NetVLAD and HDC-DELF as VPR components. Additionally, we present a simple approach for combining VPR with temporal consistency for map merging. We show that the map merging performance of ORB-SLAM3 can be improved. The inverse design of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) presents distinctive computational challenges, including their large memory requirements. Advancements in the two-photon polymerization (2PP) fabrication process introduce additional complexity, necessitating the development of more flexible optimization algorithms to enable the creation of multi-material 3D structures with unique properties. This paper presents an efficient reverse-mode automatic differentiation framework for finite-difference timedomain (FDTD) simulations that is able to handle several constraints arising from novel fabrication methods. Our method is based on straight-through gradient estimation that enables non-differentiable shape parametrizations. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by creating increasingly complex structures to solve the coupling problem in integrated photonic circuits. Feebly Interacting Particles are a commonly considered extension to the Standard Model of Particle Physics. In many theoretical frameworks these particles can explain observed physical phenomena which are in tension with the current model. \textsc{ALPiNIST} is a simplified Monte Carlo framework aimed at evaluating past, present, and future, short and long baseline experiments for their sensitivities to different models of Axion-Like Particles. We present the extension of this framework to accommodate new classes of Feebly Interacting Particles with emphasis on Heavy Neutral Leptons. This extension is especially well motivated, solving multiple of the standing issues with the Standard Model at the same time. Assessing an athlete's performance in canoe sprint is often established by measuring a variety of kinematic parameters during training sessions. Many of these parameters are related to single or multiple paddle stroke cycles. Determining on- and offset of these cycles in force sensor signals is usually not straightforward and requires human interaction. This paper explores convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and recurrent neural networks (RNNs) in terms of their ability to automatically predict these events. In addition, our work proposes an extension to the recently published SoftED metric for event detection in order to properly assess the model performance on time windows. In our results, an RNN based on bidirectional gated recurrent units (BGRUs) turned out to be the most suitable model for paddle stroke detection.

It has been known for many years that methods inspired by string theory, such as the worldline formalism, allow one to write down integral representations that combine large numbers of Feynman diagrams of different topologies. However, to make this fact useful for state-of-the-art calculations one has to confront non-standard integration problems where neither the known integration techniques for Feynman diagrams nor algebraic manipulation programs are of much help. Context: There are currently three pulsars firmly detected by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs), two of them reaching TeV energies, challenging models of very-high-energy (VHE) emission in pulsars. More precise observations are needed to better characterize pulsar emission at these energies. The LST-1 is the prototype of the Large-Sized Telescope, that will be part of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). Its improved performance over previous IACTs makes it well suited for studying pulsars. Aims: To study the Crab pulsar emission with the LST-1, improving and complementing the results from other telescopes. These observations can also be used to characterize the potential of the LST-1 to study other pulsars and detect new ones. Methods: We analyzed a total of $\sim$103 hours of gamma-ray observations of the Crab pulsar conducted with the LST-1 in the period from September 2020 to January 2023. The observations were carried out at zenith angles less than 50 degrees. A new analysis of the Fermi-LAT data was also performed, including $\sim$14 years of observations. Results: The Crab pulsar phaseogram, long-term light-curve, and phase-resolved spectra are reconstructed with the LST-1 from 20 GeV to 450 GeV for P1 and up to 700 GeV for P2. The pulsed emission is detected with a significance of 15.2$\sigma$. The two characteristic emission peaks of the Crab pulsar are clearly detected (>10$\sigma$), as well as the so-called bridge emission (5.7$\sigma$). We find that both peaks are well described by power laws, with spectral indices of $\sim$3.44 and $\sim$3.03 respectively. The joint analysis of Fermi-LAT and LST-1 data shows a good agreement between both instruments in the overlapping energy range. The anisotropic optical absorption edge of $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ follows a modified Beer-Lambert law having two effective absorption coefficients. The absorption coefficient of linearly polarized light reduces to the least absorbing direction beyond a critical penetration depth, which itself depends on polarization and wavelength. To understand this behavior, a Stokes vector analysis is performed to track the polarization state as a function of depth. The weakening of the absorption coefficient is associated with a gradual shift of linear polarization to the least absorbing crystallographic direction in the plane, which is along the a-exciton within the (010) plane or along the b-exciton in the (001) plane. We show that strong linear dichroism near the optical absorption edge causes this shift in $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$, which arises from the anisotropy and spectral splitting of the physical absorbers i.e., excitons. The linear polarization shift is accompanied by a variation in the ellipticity due to the birefringence of $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$. Analysis of the phase relationship between the incoming electric field to that at a certain depth reveals the phase speed as an effective refractive index, which varies along different crystallographic directions. The critical penetration depth is shown to be correlated with the depth at which the ellipticity is maximal. Thus, the anisotropic Beer-Lambert law arises from the interplay of both the dichroic and birefringent properties of $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We provide a worldline representation of the one-loop effective action for a Dirac particle coupled to external scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axialvector fields. Extending previous work by two of the authors on the pure vector-axialvector case to all four couplings, it allows one to treat the real and the imaginary parts of the effective action in a unified manner, at the price of having a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Unlike existing worldline representations, our new worldline action contains terms with an odd number of Grassmann fields, leading to ordering problems that in the worldline formalism are usually encountered only in curved space. Drawing on the highly developed technology for worldline path-integrals in gravity, we employ the Time Slicing regularisation of the path integral which comes about with a specific ``counterterm Lagrangian'', which we calculate once and for all and non-perturbatively, to provide unambiguous rules to treat products of distributions occurring in some diagrams of the one-dimensional worldline theory. We then employ the usual worldline machinery to lay out the rules for the calculation of the effective action itself as well as the corresponding one-loop amplitudes. We test the formalism on the calculation of various heat-kernel coefficients, self energies and scattering amplitudes, including the Higgs decay into two photons or gluons and the PCAC relation. Koopmans spectral functionals represent a powerful extension of Kohn-Sham density-functional theory (DFT), enabling accurate predictions of spectral properties with state-of-the-art accuracy. The success of these functionals relies on capturing the effects of electronic screening through scalar, orbital-dependent parameters. These parameters have to be computed for every calculation, making Koopmans spectral functionals more expensive than their DFT counterparts. In this work, we present a machine-learning model that -- with minimal training -- can predict these screening parameters directly from orbital densities calculated at the DFT level. We show on two prototypical use cases that using the screening parameters predicted by this model, instead of those calculated from linear response, leads to orbital energies that differ by less than 20 meV on average. Since this approach dramatically reduces run-times with minimal loss of accuracy, it will enable the application of Koopmans spectral functionals to classes of problems that previously would have been prohibitively expensive, such as the prediction of temperature-dependent spectral properties., Comment: 11 pages with 3 additional pages of Supplementary Information

The fields of machine learning and artificial intelligence drive researchers to explore energy-efficient, brain-inspired new hardware. Reservoir computing encompasses recurrent neural networks for sequential data processing and matches the performance of other recurrent networks with less training and lower costs. However, traditional software-based neural networks suffer from high energy consumption due to computational demands and massive data transfer needs. Photonic reservoir computing overcomes this challenge with energy-efficient neuromorphic photonic integrated circuits or NeuroPICs. Here, we introduce a reservoir NeuroPIC used for modulation format identification in C-band telecommunication network monitoring. It is built on a silicon-on-insulator platform with a 4-port reservoir architecture consisting of a set of physical nodes connected via delay lines. We comprehensively describe the NeuroPIC design and fabrication, experimentally demonstrate its performance, and compare it with simulations. The NeuroPIC incorporates non-linearity through a simple digital readout and achieves close to 100% accuracy in identifying several configurations of quadrature amplitude modulation formats transmitted over 20 km of optical fiber at 32 GBaud symbol rate. The NeuroPIC performance is robust against fabrication imperfections like waveguide propagation loss, phase randomization, etc. and delay line length variations. Furthermore, the experimental results exceeded numerical simulations, which we attribute to enhanced signal interference in the experimental NeuroPIC output. Sauter-Schwinger pair creation in electromagnetic fields is a fundamental prediction of QED and one of the motivations for the present efforts in constructing super-strong lasers. I will give a historical review of the subject, and then focus on two recent developments. The first one is the worldline instanton formalism, a sophisticated version of the WKB approximation that makes it possible to calculate the pair creation rate for complicated field configurations. The Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV), a proposed consequence of certain quantum gravity (QG) scenarios, could instigate an energy-dependent group velocity for ultra-relativistic particles. This energy dependence, although suppressed by the massive QG energy scale $E_\mathrm{QG}$, expected to be on the level of the Planck energy $1.22 \times 10^{19}$ GeV, is potentially detectable in astrophysical observations. In this scenario, the cosmological distances traversed by photons act as an amplifier for this effect. By leveraging the observation of a remarkable flare from the blazar Mrk\,421, recorded at energies above 100 GeV by the MAGIC telescopes on the night of April 25 to 26, 2014, we look for time delays scaling linearly and quadratically with the photon energies. Using for the first time in LIV studies a binned-likelihood approach we set constraints on the QG energy scale. For the linear scenario, we set $95\%$ lower limits $E_\mathrm{QG}>2.7\times10^{17}$ GeV for the subluminal case and $E_\mathrm{QG}> 3.6 \times10^{17}$ GeV for the superluminal case. For the quadratic scenario, the $95\%$ lower limits for the subluminal and superluminal cases are $E_\mathrm{QG}>2.6 \times10^{10}$ GeV and $E_\mathrm{QG}>2.5\times10^{10}$ GeV, respectively.

Vision-Language Models (VLM) can support clinicians by analyzing medical images and engaging in natural language interactions to assist in diagnostic and treatment tasks. However, VLMs often exhibit "hallucinogenic" behavior, generating textual outputs not grounded in contextual multimodal information. This challenge is particularly pronounced in the medical domain, where we do not only require VLM outputs to be accurate in single interactions but also to be consistent with clinical reasoning and diagnostic pathways throughout multi-turn conversations. For this purpose, we propose a new alignment algorithm that uses symbolic representations of clinical reasoning to ground VLMs in medical knowledge. These representations are utilized to (i) generate GPT-4-guided visual instruction tuning data at scale, simulating clinician-VLM conversations with demonstrations of clinical reasoning, and (ii) create an automatic reward function that evaluates the clinical validity of VLM generations throughout clinician-VLM interactions. Our algorithm eliminates the need for human involvement in training data generation or reward model construction, reducing costs compared to standard reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF). We apply our alignment algorithm to develop Dr-LLaVA, a conversational VLM finetuned for analyzing bone marrow pathology slides, demonstrating strong performance in multi-turn medical conversations., Comment: Code available at: https://github.com/AlaaLab/Dr-LLaVA

Many algorithms require discriminative boundaries, such as separating hyperplanes or hyperballs, or are specifically designed to work on spherical data. By applying inversive geometry, we show that the two discriminative boundaries can be used interchangeably, and that general Euclidean data can be transformed into spherical data, whenever a change in point distances is acceptable. We provide explicit formulae to embed general Euclidean data into spherical data and to unembed it back. We further show a duality between hyperspherical caps, i.e., the volume created by a separating hyperplane on spherical data, and hyperballs and provide explicit formulae to map between the two. We further provide equations to translate inner products and Euclidean distances between the two spaces, to avoid explicit embedding and unembedding. We also provide a method to enforce projections of the general Euclidean space onto hemi-hyperspheres and propose an intrinsic dimensionality based method to obtain "all-purpose" parameters. In this work we derive the state of strain or stress under symmetry conserving conditions in pseudomorphic lattices with monoclinic symmetry. We compare surface vectors across the template epitaxial layer interface and impose conditions of a stress free epitaxial layer. As a result, we demonstrate the existence, in theory, of exactly three possible unit cells which can establish onto a given template. We demonstrate this approach for a class of templates with $(h0l)$ planes and $\beta$-(Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$)$_2$O$_3$ on $(h0l)$ $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$. We discuss the effects of composition $x$ and surface orientation onto the formation of three elastically stable unit cells, their strain and stress tensors, unit cell axes, unit cell volumes, lattice spacing, elastic potential energies, and stress free directions. The previous paradigm for epitaxial layer growth where the stress free direction is always perpendicular to the growing surface is not generally valid for low symmetry materials. In the example here, we find two possible competing domains with stress free direction oblique to the surface of the template for almost all planes $(h0l)$. We calculate the band-to-band transitions for $\beta$-(Al$_{0.1}$Ga$_{0.9}$)$_2$O$_3$ on $(h0l)$ $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ using the composition dependent deformation parameters and elastic coefficients reported prevoiously [Korlacki~\textit{et al.} Phys. In this letter, we derive an expression for magnetic dipole transitions that is analogous to the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relation for dielectric polar lattice vibrations. We thereby define transverse and longitudinal optical frequencies at which paramagnetic resonance and antiresonance occurs, respectively. The relation found here thus permits non-invasive optical analysis of static magnetization properties in paramagnetic materials. Validated through terahertz electron paramagnetic resonance ellipsometry and superconducting quantum interference device measurements on Iron-doped Gallium Nitride, our findings show very good agreement between theory and experiment. We term the excitations associated with the paramagnetic transitions as paramagnetic polaritons which may find use in future photonic applications

Rodents employ a broad spectrum of ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) for social communication. As these vocalizations offer valuable insights into affective states, social interactions, and developmental stages of animals, various deep learning approaches have aimed to automate both the quantitative (detection) and qualitative (classification) analysis of USVs. Here, we present the first systematic evaluation of different types of neural networks for USV classification. We assessed various feedforward networks, including a custom-built, fully-connected network and convolutional neural network, different residual neural networks (ResNets), an EfficientNet, and a Vision Transformer (ViT). Paired with a refined, entropy-based detection algorithm (achieving recall of 94.9% and precision of 99.3%), the best architecture (achieving 86.79% accuracy) was integrated into a fully automated pipeline capable of analyzing extensive USV datasets with high reliability. Additionally, users can specify an individual minimum accuracy threshold based on their research needs. In this semi-automated setup, the pipeline selectively classifies calls with high pseudo-probability, leaving the rest for manual inspection. Our study focuses exclusively on neonatal USVs. As part of an ongoing phenotyping study, our pipeline has proven to be a valuable tool for identifying key differences in USVs produced by mice with autism-like behaviors.

Efficient and compact single photon emission platforms operating at room temperature with ultrafast speed and high brightness will be fundamental components of the emerging quantum communications and computing fields. However, so far, it has been very challenging to design practical deterministic single photon emitters based on nanoscale solid state materials that meet the fast emission rate and strong brightness demands. Here we provide a solution to this longstanding problem by using metallic nanocavities integrated with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) flakes with defects acting as nanoscale single photon emitters (SPEs) at room temperature. The presented hybrid nanophotonic structure creates a rapid speedup and large enhancement in single photon emission at room temperature. Hence, the nonclassical light emission performance is substantially improved compared to plain hBN flakes and hBN on gold layered structures without nanocavity. Extensive theoretical calculations are also performed to accurately model the new hybrid nanophotonic system and prove that the incorporation of plasmonic nanocavity is key to the efficient SPE performance. The proposed quantum nanocavity single photon source is expected to be an element of paramount importance to the envisioned room temperature integrated quantum photonic networks.

The classical satisfiability problem (SAT) is used as a natural and general tool to express and solve combinatorial problems that are in NP. We postulate that provability for implicational intuitionistic propositional logic (IIPC) can serve as a similar natural tool to express problems in Pspace. This approach can be particularly convenient for two reasons. One is that provability in full IPC (with all connectives) can be reduced to provability of implicational formulas of order three. Another advantage is a convenient interpretation in terms of simple alternating automata. Additionally, we distinguish some natural subclasses of IIPC corresponding to the complexity classes NP and co-NP. Our experimental results show that a simple decision procedure requires a significant amount of time only in a small fraction of cases.

The inherently weak chiroptical responses of natural materials limit their usage for controlling and enhancing chiral light-matter interactions. Recently, several nanostructures with subwavelength scale dimensions were demonstrated, mainly due to the advent of nanofabrication technologies, as a potential alternative to efficiently enhance chirality. However, the intrinsic lossy nature of metals and inherent narrowband response of dielectric planar thin films or metasurface structures pose severe limitations toward the practical realization of broadband and tailorable chiral systems. Here, we tackle these problems by designing all-dielectric silicon-based L-shaped optical metamaterials based on tilted nanopillars that exhibit broadband and enhanced chiroptical response in transmission operation. We use an emerging bottom-up fabrication approach, named glancing angle deposition, to assemble these dielectric metamaterials on a wafer scale. The reported strong chirality and optical anisotropic properties are controllable in terms of both amplitude and operating frequency by simply varying the shape and dimensions of the nanopillars. The presented nanostructures can be used in a plethora of emerging nanophotonic applications, such as chiral sensors, polarization filters, and spin-locked nanowaveguides.

Remote sensing projects typically generate large amounts of imagery that can be used to train powerful deep neural networks. However, the amount of labeled images is often small, as remote sensing applications generally require expert labelers. Thus, semi-supervised learning (SSL), i.e., learning with a small pool of labeled and a larger pool of unlabeled data, is particularly useful in this domain. Current SSL approaches generate pseudo-labels from model predictions for unlabeled samples. As the quality of these pseudo-labels is crucial for performance, utilizing additional information to improve pseudo-label quality yields a promising direction. For remote sensing images, geolocation and recording time are generally available and provide a valuable source of information as semantic concepts, such as land cover, are highly dependent on spatiotemporal context, e.g., due to seasonal effects and vegetation zones. In this paper, we propose to exploit spatiotemporal metainformation in SSL to improve the quality of pseudo-labels and, therefore, the final model performance. We show that directly adding the available metadata to the input of the predictor at test time degenerates the prediction quality for metadata outside the spatiotemporal distribution of the training set. Thus, we propose a teacher-student SSL framework where only the teacher network uses metainformation to improve the quality of pseudo-labels on the training set. Correspondingly, our student network benefits from the improved pseudo-labels but does not receive metadata as input, making it invariant to spatiotemporal shifts at test time. Furthermore, we propose methods for encoding and injecting spatiotemporal information into the model and introduce a novel distillation mechanism to enhance the knowledge transfer between teacher and student. Supervising the safe operation of automated vehicles is a key requirement in order to unleash their full potential in future transportation systems. In particular, previous publications have argued that SAE Level 4 vehicles should be aware of their capabilities at runtime to make appropriate behavioral decisions. In this paper, we present a framework that enables the implementation of an online capability monitor. We derive a graphical system model that captures the relationships between the quality of system elements across different architectural views. In an expert-driven approach, we parameterize Bayesian Networks based on this structure using Fuzzy Logic. Automated driving systems require monitoring mechanisms to ensure safe operation, especially if system components degrade or fail. Their runtime self-representation plays a key role as it provides a-priori knowledge about the system's capabilities and limitations. In this paper, we propose a data-driven approach for deriving such a self-representation model for the motion controller of an automated vehicle. A conformalized prediction model is learned and allows estimating how operational conditions as well as potential degradations and failures of the vehicle's actuators impact motion control performance. The common believe about strict measurement reciprocity between scanning laser detection and scanning laser excitation is disproved by a simple experiment. Nevertheless, a deeper study based on the reciprocity relation reveals correct reciprocal measurement set-ups for both the probe-excitation / laser-detection and the laser-excitation / probe-detection case. Similarly, the all-laser measurement, that is thermoelastic laser excitation with laser vibrometer detection, is not in general reciprocal with respect to the exchange of excitation and detection positions. Again, a substitute for the laser doppler vibrometer out-of-plane displacement measurement was found which ensures measurement reciprocity together with laser excitation. A generalized approach derived from Blochs equation of motion of nuclear magnetic moments is presented to model the frequency, magnetic field, spin density, and temperature dependencies in the electromagnetic permeability tensor for materials with magnetic resonances. The resulting tensor model predicts characteristic polarization signatures which can be observed, for example, in fully polarization-resolved Mueller matrix element spectra measured across magnetic resonances as a function of frequency, magnetic field, magnetic moment density, and temperature. When augmented with thermodynamic considerations and suitable Hamiltonian description of the magnetic eigenvalue spectrum, important parameters such as zero-frequency magnetization, spectral amplitude distribution, relaxation time constants, and geometrical orientation parameters of the magnetic moment density can be obtained from comparing the generalized model approach to experimental data. We demonstrate our approach by comparing model calculations with full Mueller matrix element spectra measured at oblique angle of incidence in the terahertz spectral range, across electron spin resonance quintuplet transitions observed in wurtzite-structure GaN doped with iron. Measurements were performed by ellipsometry, using a superconducting cryostat magnet at magnetic fields of 7.23 T and at temperatures of 20 K and 30 K. We detail the occurrence of linear and circular birefringence and dichroism associated with each of the zero-field split spin transitions in the S = 5/2 defect system. We derive the spectral dependence of the magnetic susceptibility function and obtain the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the spin Hamiltonian. Our model correctly predicts the complexity of the polarization signatures observed in the 15 independent elements of the normalized Mueller matrix for both positive and negative magnetic fields.

Accurate spatio-temporal information about the current situation is crucial for smart city applications such as modern routing algorithms. Often, this information describes the state of stationary resources, e.g. the availability of parking bays, charging stations or the amount of people waiting for a vehicle to pick them up near a given location. To exploit this kind of information, predicting future states of the monitored resources is often mandatory because a resource might change its state within the time until it is needed. To train an accurate predictive model, it is often not possible to obtain a continuous time series on the state of the resource. For example, the information might be collected from traveling agents visiting the resource with an irregular frequency. Thus, it is necessary to develop methods which work on sparse observations for training and prediction. In this paper, we propose time-inhomogeneous discrete Markov models to allow accurate prediction even when the frequency of observation is very rare. Our new model is able to blend recent observations with historic data and also provide useful probabilistic estimates for future states. Since resources availability in a city is typically time-dependent, our Markov model is time-inhomogeneous and cyclic within a predefined time interval. To train our model, we propose a modified Baum-Welch algorithm. Portfolio optimization tasks describe sequential decision problems in which the investor's wealth is distributed across a set of assets. Allocation constraints are used to enforce minimal or maximal investments into particular subsets of assets to control for objectives such as limiting the portfolio's exposure to a certain sector due to environmental concerns. Although methods for constrained Reinforcement Learning (CRL) can optimize policies while considering allocation constraints, it can be observed that these general methods yield suboptimal results. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to handle allocation constraints based on a decomposition of the constraint action space into a set of unconstrained allocation problems. In particular, we examine this approach for the case of two constraints. For example, an investor may wish to invest at least a certain percentage of the portfolio into green technologies while limiting the investment in the fossil energy sector. We show that the action space of the task is equivalent to the decomposed action space, and introduce a new reinforcement learning (RL) approach CAOSD, which is built on top of the decomposition. The experimental evaluation on real-world Nasdaq-100 data demonstrates that our approach consistently outperforms state-of-the-art CRL benchmarks for portfolio optimization.

Finding an available on-street parking spot is a relevant problem of day-to-day life. In recent years, cities such as Melbourne and San Francisco deployed sensors that provide real-time information about the occupation of parking spots. Finding a free parking spot in such a smart environment can be modeled and solved as a Markov decision process (MDP). The problem has to consider uncertainty as available parking spots might not remain available until arrival due to other vehicles also claiming spots in the meantime. Knowing the parking intention of every vehicle in the environment would eliminate this uncertainty. Unfortunately, it does currently not seem realistic to have such data from all vehicles. In contrast, acquiring data from a subset of vehicles or a vehicle fleet appears feasible and has the potential to reduce uncertainty. In this paper, we examine the question of how useful sharing data within a vehicle fleet might be for the search times of particular drivers. We use fleet data to better estimate the availability of parking spots at arrival. Since optimal solutions for large scenarios are infeasible, we base our method on approximate solutions, which have been shown to perform well in single-agent settings. Our experiments are conducted on a simulation using real-world and synthetic data from the city of Melbourne. Monoclinic $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ films grown on $c$-plane sapphire have been shown to exhibit six $(\bar{2}01)$-plane oriented domains, which are equally-spaced-by-rotation around the surface normal and equally-sized-by-volume that render the film optical response effectively uniaxial. We derive and discuss an optical model suitable for ellipsometry data analysis of such films. We model mid- and far-infrared ellipsometry data from undoped and electrically insulating films with an effective uniaxial dielectric tensor based on projections of all phonon modes within the rotation domains parallel and perpendicular to the sample normal, i.e., to the reciprocal lattice vector $\mathbf{g}_{\bar{2}01}$. Two effective response functions are described by model, and found sufficient to calculate ellipsometry data that best-match measured ellipsometry data from a representative film. We propose to render either effective dielectric functions, or inverse effective dielectric functions, each separately for electric field directions parallel and perpendicular to $\mathbf{g}_{\bar{2}01}$, by sums of Lorentz oscillators, which permit to determine either sets of transverse optical phonon mode parameters, or sets of longitudinal optical phonon mode parameters, respectively. Transverse optical modes common to both dielectric functions can be traced back to single crystal modes with $B_{\mathrm{u}}$ character, while modes with $A_{\mathrm{u}}$ character only appear within the dielectric function for polarization perpendicular to the sample surface. The thereby obtained parameter sets reveal all phonon modes anticipated from averaging over the six-fold rotation domains of single crystal $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$, but with slightly shifted transverse optical, and completely different longitudinal optical phonon modes., Comment: 14 pgaes, 8 figures

We propose a multi-objective global pattern search algorithm for the task of locating and quantifying damage in flexible mechanical structures. This is achieved by identifying eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes from measurements and matching them against the results of a finite element simulation model, which leads to a nonsmooth nonlinear bi-objective parameter estimation problem. A derivative-free optimization algorithm is required since the problem is nonsmooth and also because complex mechanical simulation models are often solved using commercial black-box software. Moreover, the entire set of non-dominated solutions is of interest to practitioners. Most solution approaches published to date are based on meta-heuristics such as genetic algorithms. The proposed multi-objective pattern-search algorithm provides a mathematically well-founded alternative. It features a novel sorting procedure that reduces the complexity in our context. Test runs on two experimental structures with multiple damage scenarios are used to validate the approach. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm yields accurate damage locations and requires moderate computational resources. From the engineer's perspective it represents a promising tool for structural health monitoring.

Large language models (LLMs) have gained widespread interest due to their ability to process human language and perform tasks on which they have not been explicitly trained. This is relevant for the chemical sciences, which face the problem of small and diverse datasets that are frequently in the form of text. LLMs have shown promise in addressing these issues and are increasingly being harnessed to predict chemical properties, optimize reactions, and even design and conduct experiments autonomously. However, we still have only a very limited systematic understanding of the chemical reasoning capabilities of LLMs, which would be required to improve models and mitigate potential harms. Here, we introduce "ChemBench," an automated framework designed to rigorously evaluate the chemical knowledge and reasoning abilities of state-of-the-art LLMs against the expertise of human chemists. We curated more than 7,000 question-answer pairs for a wide array of subfields of the chemical sciences, evaluated leading open and closed-source LLMs, and found that the best models outperformed the best human chemists in our study on average. The models, however, struggle with some chemical reasoning tasks that are easy for human experts and provide overconfident, misleading predictions, such as about chemicals' safety profiles. These findings underscore the dual reality that, although LLMs demonstrate remarkable proficiency in chemical tasks, further research is critical to enhancing their safety and utility in chemical sciences. Our findings also indicate a need for adaptations to chemistry curricula and highlight the importance of continuing to develop evaluation frameworks to improve safe and useful LLMs.

We consider the aeroelastic simulation of flexible mechanical structures submerged in subsonic fluid flows at low Mach numbers. The nonlinear kinematics of flexible bodies are described in the total Lagrangian formulation and discretized by finite elements. The aerodynamic loads are computed using the unsteady vortex-lattice method wherein a free wake is tracked over time. Each implicit time step in the dynamic simulation then requires solving a nonlinear equation system in the structural variables with additional aerodynamic load terms. Our focus here is on the efficient numerical solution of this system by accelerating the Newton algorithm. The particular structure of the aeroelastic nonlinear system suggests the structural derivative as an approximation to the full derivative in the linear Newton system. We investigate and compare two promising algorithms based in this approximation, a quasi-Newton type algorithm and a novel inexact Newton algorithm. Numerical experiments are performed on a flexible plate and on a wind turbine. Our computational results show that the approximation can indeed accelerate the Newton algorithm substantially. Surprisingly, the theoretically preferable inexact Newton algorithm is much slower than the quasi-Newton algorithm, which motivates further research to speed up derivative evaluations.

Large-scale applications of Visual Place Recognition (VPR) require computationally efficient approaches. Further, a well-balanced combination of data-based and training-free approaches can decrease the required amount of training data and effort and can reduce the influence of distribution shifts between the training and application phases. This paper proposes a runtime and data-efficient hierarchical VPR pipeline that extends existing approaches and presents novel ideas. There are three main contributions: First, we propose Local Positional Graphs (LPG), a training-free and runtime-efficient approach to encode spatial context information of local image features. LPG can be combined with existing local feature detectors and descriptors and considerably improves the image-matching quality compared to existing techniques in our experiments. Second, we present Attentive Local SPED (ATLAS), an extension of our previous local features approach with an attention module that improves the feature quality while maintaining high data efficiency. The influence of the proposed modifications is evaluated in an extensive ablation study. Third, we present a hierarchical pipeline that exploits hyperdimensional computing to use the same local features as holistic HDC-descriptors for fast candidate selection and for candidate reranking. We combine all contributions in a runtime and data-efficient VPR pipeline that shows benefits over the state-of-the-art method Patch-NetVLAD on a large collection of standard place recognition datasets with 15$\%$ better performance in VPR accuracy, 54$\times$ faster feature comparison speed, and 55$\times$ less descriptor storage occupancy, making our method promising for real-world high-performance large-scale VPR in changing environments. Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. PG 1553+113 is one of the few blazars with a convincing quasi-periodic emission in the gamma-ray band. The source is also a very high-energy (VHE; >100 GeV) gamma-ray emitter. To better understand its properties and identify the underlying physical processes driving its variability, the MAGIC Collaboration initiated a multiyear, multiwavelength monitoring campaign in 2015 involving the OVRO 40-m and Medicina radio telescopes, REM, KVA, and the MAGIC telescopes, Swift and Fermi satellites, and the WEBT network. The analysis presented in this paper uses data until 2017 and focuses on the characterization of the variability. The gamma-ray data show a (hint of a) periodic signal compatible with literature, but the X-ray and VHE gamma-ray data do not show statistical evidence for a periodic signal. In other bands, the data are compatible with the gamma-ray period, but with a relatively high p-value. The complex connection between the low and high-energy emission and the non-monochromatic modulation and changes in flux suggests that a simple one-zone model is unable to explain all the variability. For the simulation-based design of fiber melt spinning processes, the accurate modeling of the processed polymer with regard to its material behavior is crucial. In this work, we develop a high-speed elongational rheometer for Carreau-type materials, making use of process simulations and fiber diameter measurements. The procedure is based on a unified formulation of the fiber spinning model for all material types (Newtonian and non-Newtonian), whose material laws are strictly monotone in the strain rate. The parametrically described material law for the elongational viscosity implies a nonlinear optimization problem for the parameter identification, for which we propose an efficient, robust gradient-based method. The work can be understood as a proof of concept, a generalization to other, more complex materials is possible.

Silicon-based color-centers (SiCCs) have recently emerged as quantum-light sources that can be combined with telecom-range Si Photonics platforms. Unfortunately, using current SiCC fabrication, deterministic control over the vertical emitter position is impossible due to ion-implantation's stochastic nature. To overcome this bottleneck towards high-yield integration, we demonstrate a radically innovative creation method for various SiCCs, solely relying on epitaxial growth of Si and C-doped Si at atypically-low temperatures in a ultra-clean growth environment. These telecom emitters can be confined within sub-1nm thick layers embedded at arbitrary vertical positions within a highly crystalline Si matrix. Tuning growth conditions and doping, different SiCC types, e.g., W-centers, T-centers, G-centers, or derivatives like G'-centers can be created, which are particularly promising as Si-based single-photon sources and spin-photon interfaces. The zero-phonon emission from G'-centers can be conveniently tuned by the C-concentration, leading to a systematic wavelength shift and linewidth narrowing towards low emitter densities.

Ultracold atomic gases hold unique promise for space science by capitalizing on quantum advantages and extended freefall, afforded in a microgravity environment, to enable next-generation precision sensors. Atom interferometers are a class of quantum sensors which can use freely falling gases of atoms cooled to sub-photon-recoil temperatures to provide unprecedented sensitivities to accelerations, rotations, and gravitational forces, and are currently being developed for space-based applications in gravitational, earth, and planetary sciences, as well as to search for subtle forces that could signify physics beyond General Relativity and the Standard Model. NASA's Cold Atom Lab (CAL) operates onboard the International Space Station as a multi-user facility for studies of ultracold atoms and to mature quantum technologies, including atom interferometry, in persistent microgravity. In this paper, we report on path-finding experiments utilizing ultracold $^{87}$Rb atoms in the CAL atom interferometer, which was enabled by an on-orbit upgrade of the CAL science module: A three-pulse Mach-Zehnder interferometer was studied to understand limitations from the influence of ISS vibrations. Additionally, Ramsey shear-wave interferometry was used to manifest interference patterns in a single run that were observable for over 150 ms free-expansion time. Finally, the CAL atom interferometer was used to remotely measure the photon recoil from the atom interferometer laser as a demonstration of the first quantum sensor using matter-wave interferometry in space., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures
