1. Enhanced control of single-molecule emission frequency and spectral diffusion

Abstract: The Stark effect provides a powerful method to shift the spectra of molecules, atoms and electronic transitions in general, becoming one of the simplest and most straightforward way to tune the frequency of quantum emitters by means of a static electric field. At the same time, in order to reduce the emitter sensitivity to charge noise, inversion symmetric systems are typically designed, providing a stable emission frequency, with a quadratic-only dependence on the applied field. However, such nonlinear behaviour might reflect in correlations between the tuning ability and unwanted spectral fluctuations. Here, we provide experimental evidence of this trend, using molecular quantum emitters in the solid state cooled down to liquid helium temperatures. We finally combine the electric field generated by electrodes, which results parallel to the molecule induced dipole, to optically excite long-lived charge states, acting in the perpendicular direction. Based on the anisotropy of the molecule's polarizability, our two-dimensional control of the local electric field allows not only to tune the emitter's frequency but also to sensibly suppress the spectral instabilities associated to field fluctuations.

2. Fast thermo-optic switching on silicon nitride platform through parity-time symmetry breaking

Abstract: This work demonstrates a fast thermo-optic switching mechanism on silicon nitride on insulator platform leveraging parity-time symmetry breaking. The cladding-free design enables low-loss optical propagation in a partially metal-covered waveguide, with the same metal layer serving as an integrated heater for rapid phase tuning. The fabricated device exhibits an 8.5 {\mu}s rise time for a {\pi} phase shift, despite the weak thermo-optic coefficient in silicon nitride. Additionally, the impact of thermal cross-talk is investigated and an insertion loss as low as 0.39 dB for a 100-{\mu}m-long heater-waveguide section is demonstrated., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are prime candidate sources of the high-energy, astrophysical neutrinos detected by IceCube. This is demonstrated by the real-time multi-messenger detection of the blazar TXS 0506+056 and the recent evidence of neutrino emission from NGC 1068 from a separate time-averaged study. However, the production mechanism of the astrophysical neutrinos in AGN is not well established which can be resolved via correlation studies with photon observations. For neutrinos produced due to photohadronic interactions in AGN, in addition to a correlation of neutrinos with high-energy photons, there would also be a correlation of neutrinos with photons emitted at radio wavelengths. In this work, we perform an in-depth stacking study of the correlation between 15 GHz radio observations of AGN reported in the MOJAVE XV catalog, and ten years of neutrino data from IceCube. We also use a time-dependent approach which improves the statistical power of the stacking analysis. No significant correlation was found for both analyses and upper limits are reported. When compared to the IceCube diffuse flux, at 100 TeV and for a spectral index of 2.5, the upper limits derived are $\sim3\%$ and $\sim9\%$ for the time-averaged and time-dependent case, respectively., Comment: 14 Pages 7 Figures

Abstract: We present a search for an eV-scale sterile neutrino using 7.5 years of data from the IceCube DeepCore detector. The analysis uses a sample of 21,914 events with energies between 5 and 150 GeV to search for sterile neutrinos through atmospheric muon neutrino disappearance. Improvements in event selection and treatment of systematic uncertainties provide greater statistical power compared to previous DeepCore sterile neutrino searches. Our results are compatible with the absence of mixing between active and sterile neutrino states, and we place constraints on the mixing matrix elements $|U_{\mu 4}|^2 < 0.0534$ and $|U_{\tau 4}|^2 < 0.0574$ at 90% CL under the assumption that $\Delta m^2_{41}\geq 1\;\mathrm{eV^2}$. These null results add to the growing tension between anomalous appearance results and constraints from disappearance searches in the 3+1 sterile neutrino landscape., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. 6. Flaires: A Comprehensive Catalog of Dust-Echo-like Infrared Flares

Abstract: Context: Observations of transient emission from extreme accretion events onto supermassive black holes can reveal conditions in the center of galaxies and the black hole itself. Most recently, they have been suggested to be emitters of high-energy neutrinos. If it is suddenly rejuvenated accretion or a tidal disruption event (TDE) is not clear in most cases. Aims: We expanded on existing samples of infrared flares to compile the largest and most complete list available. A large sample size is necessary to provide high enough statistics for far away and faint objects to estimate their rate. Our catalog is large enough to facilitate a preliminary study of the rate evolution with redshift for the first time. Methods: We compiled a sample of 40 million galaxies, and, using a custom, publicly available pipeline, analyzed the WISE light curves for these 40 million objects using the Bayesian Blocks algorithm. We selected promising candidates for dust echos of transient accretion events and inferred the luminosity, extension, and temperature of the hot dust by fitting a blackbody spectrum. Results: We established a clean sample of 823 dust-echo-like infrared flares, of which we can estimate the dust properties for 568. After removing 70 objects with possible contribution by synchrotron emission, the luminosity, extension, and temperature are consistent with dust echos. Estimating the dust extension from the light curve shape revealed that the duration of the incident flare is broadly compatible with the duration of TDEs. Abstract: Squeezed states are essential for continuous variable (CV) quantum information processing, with wide-ranging applications in computing, sensing and communications. Integrated photonic circuits provide a scalable, convenient platform for building large CV circuits. Thin-film Lithium Niobate (TFLN) is particularly promising due to its low propagation loss, efficient parametric down conversion, and fast electro-optical modulation. In this work, we demonstrate a squeezed light source on an integrated TFLN platform, achieving a measured shot noise reduction of 0.46 dB using modal phase matching and grating couplers with an efficiency of up to -2.2 dB. The achieved squeezing is comparable to what has been observed using more complex circuitry based on periodic poling. Abstract: The recent IceCube detection of TeV neutrino emission from the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068 suggests that active galactic nuclei (AGN) could make a sizable contribution to the diffuse flux of astrophysical neutrinos. The absence of TeV $\gamma$-rays from NGC 1068 indicates neutrino production in the vicinity of the supermassive black hole, where the high radiation density leads to $\gamma$-ray attenuation. Therefore, any potential neutrino emission from similar sources is not expected to correlate with high-energy $\gamma$-rays. Disk-corona models predict neutrino emission from Seyfert galaxies to correlate with keV X-rays, as they are tracers of coronal activity. Using through-going track events from the Northern Sky recorded by IceCube between 2011 and 2021, we report results from a search for individual and aggregated neutrino signals from 27 additional Seyfert galaxies that are contained in the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS). Besides the generic single power-law, we evaluate the spectra predicted by the disk-corona model. Assuming all sources to be intrinsically similar to NGC 1068, our findings constrain the collective neutrino emission from X-ray bright Seyfert galaxies in the Northern Hemisphere, but, at the same time, show excesses of neutrinos that could be associated with the objects NGC 4151 and CGCG 420-015. Abstract: Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are promising candidate sources of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos since they provide environments rich in matter and photon targets where cosmic ray interactions may lead to the production of gamma rays and neutrinos. We searched for high-energy neutrino emission from AGN using the $\textit{Swift}$-BAT Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) catalog of hard X-ray sources and 12 years of IceCube muon track data. First, upon performing a stacked search, no significant emission was found. Second, we searched for neutrinos from a list of 43 candidate sources and found an excess from the direction of two sources, Seyfert galaxies NGC 1068 and NGC 4151. We observed NGC 1068 at flux $\phi_{\nu_{\mu}+\bar{\nu}_{\mu}}$ = $4.02_{-1.52}^{+1.58} \times 10^{-11}$ TeV$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ normalized at 1 TeV, with power-law spectral index, $\gamma$ = 3.10$^{+0.26}_{-0.22}$, consistent with previous IceCube results. The observation of a neutrino excess from the direction of NGC 4151 is at a post-trial significance of 2.9$\sigma$. If interpreted as an astrophysical signal, the excess observed from NGC 4151 corresponds to a flux $\phi_{\nu_{\mu}+\bar{\nu}_{\mu}}$ = $1.51_{-0.81}^{+0.99} \times 10^{-11}$ TeV$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ normalized at 1 TeV and $\gamma$ = 2.83$^{+0.35}_{-0.28}$.

Abstract: We present the first three-parameter fit to a 3+1 sterile neutrino model using 7.634 years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory on $\nu_\mu+\overline{\nu}_\mu$ charged-current interactions in the energy range 500-9976 GeV. Our analysis is sensitive to the mass-squared splitting between the heaviest and lightest mass state ($\Delta m_{41}^2$), the mixing matrix element connecting muon flavor to the fourth mass state ($|U_{\mu4}|^2$), and the element connecting tau flavor to the fourth mass state ($|U_{\tau4}|^2$). Predicted propagation effects in matter enhance the signature through a resonance as atmospheric neutrinos from the Northern Hemisphere traverse the Earth to the IceCube detector at the South Pole. The result is consistent with the no-sterile neutrino hypothesis with a probability of 4.3 %. Profiling the likelihood of each parameter yields the 90 % confidence levels: $ 2.4\,\mathrm{eV}^{2} < \Delta m_{41}^2 <9.6\,\mathrm{eV}^{2} $ , $0.0081 < |U_{\mu4}|^2 < 0.10$ , and $|U_{\tau4}|^2< 0.035$, which narrows the allowed parameter-space for $|U_{\tau4}|^2$. However, the primary result of this analysis is the first map of the 3+1 parameter space exploring the interdependence of $\Delta m_{41}^2$, $|U_{\mu4}|^2$, and $|U_{\tau4}|^2$.

Abstract: We provide supporting details for the search for a 3+1 sterile neutrino using data collected over eleven years at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The analysis uses atmospheric muon-flavored neutrinos from 0.5 to 100\, TeV that traverse the Earth to reach the IceCube detector, and finds a best-fit point at $\sin^2(2\theta_{24}) = 0.16$ and $\Delta m^{2}_{41} = 3.5$ eV$^2$ with a goodness-of-fit p-value of 12\% and consistency with the null hypothesis of no oscillations to sterile neutrinos with a p-value of 3.1\%. Several improvements were made over past analyses, which are reviewed in this article, including upgrades to the reconstruction and the study of sources of systematic uncertainty. We provide details of the fit quality and discuss stability tests that split the data for separate samples, comparing results. Abstract: This Letter presents the result of a 3+1 sterile neutrino search using 10.7 years of IceCube data. We analyze atmospheric muon neutrinos that traverse the Earth with energies ranging from 0.5 to 100 TeV, incorporating significant improvements in modeling neutrino flux and detector response compared to earlier studies. Notably, for the first time, we categorize data into starting and through-going events, distinguishing neutrino interactions with vertices inside or outside the instrumented volume, to improve energy resolution. The best-fit point for a 3+1 model is found to be at $\sin^2(2\theta_{24}) = 0.16$ and $\Delta m^{2}_{41} = 3.5$ eV$^2$, which agrees with previous iterations of this study. Abstract: Galactic PeVatrons are sources that can accelerate cosmic rays to PeV energies. The high-energy cosmic rays are expected to interact with the surrounding ambient material or radiation, resulting in the production of gamma rays and neutrinos. To optimize for the detection of such associated production of gamma rays and neutrinos for a given source morphology and spectrum, a multi-messenger analysis that combines gamma rays and neutrinos is required. In this study, we use the Multi-Mission Maximum Likelihood framework (3ML) with IceCube Maximum Likelihood Analysis software (i3mla) and HAWC Accelerated Likelihood (HAL) to search for a correlation between 22 known gamma-ray sources from the third HAWC gamma-ray catalog and 14 years of IceCube track-like data. No significant neutrino emission from the direction of the HAWC sources was found. We report the best-fit gamma-ray model and 90% CL neutrino flux limit from the 22 sources. From the neutrino flux limit, we conclude that the gamma-ray emission from five of the sources can not be produced purely from hadronic interactions. We report the limit for the fraction of gamma rays produced by hadronic interactions for these five sources.

Abstract: More than 10,000 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) with a diameter of 80 mm will be installed in multi-PMT Digital Optical Modules (mDOMs) of the IceCube Upgrade. These have been tested and pre-calibrated at two sites. A throughput of more than 1000 PMTs per week with both sites was achieved with a modular design of the testing facilities and highly automated testing procedures. The testing facilities can easily be adapted to other PMTs, such that they can, e.g., be re-used for testing the PMTs for IceCube-Gen2. Single photoelectron response, high voltage dependence, time resolution, prepulse, late pulse, afterpulse probabilities, and dark rates were measured for each PMT. Abstract: The IceCube Neutrino Observatory relies on an array of photomultiplier tubes to detect Cherenkov light produced by charged particles in the South Pole ice. IceCube data analyses depend on an in-depth characterization of the glacial ice, and on novel approaches in event reconstruction that utilize fast approximations of photoelectron yields. Here, a more accurate model is derived for event reconstruction that better captures our current knowledge of ice optical properties. When evaluated on a Monte Carlo simulation set, the median angular resolution for in-ice particle showers improves by over a factor of three compared to a reconstruction based on a simplified model of the ice. The most substantial improvement is obtained when including effects of birefringence due to the polycrystalline structure of the ice. Abstract: A measurement of the diffuse astrophysical neutrino spectrum is presented using IceCube data collected from 2011-2022 (10.3 years). We developed novel detection techniques to search for events with a contained vertex and exiting track induced by muon neutrinos undergoing a charged-current interaction. Searching for these starting track events allows us to not only more effectively reject atmospheric muons but also atmospheric neutrino backgrounds in the southern sky, opening a new window to the sub-100 TeV astrophysical neutrino sky. The event selection is constructed using a dynamic starting track veto and machine learning algorithms. We use this data to measure the astrophysical diffuse flux as a single power law flux (SPL) with a best-fit spectral index of $\gamma = 2.58 ^{+0.10}_{-0.09}$ and per-flavor normalization of $\phi^{\mathrm{Astro}}_{\mathrm{per-flavor}} = 1.68 ^{+0.19}_{-0.22} \times 10^{-18} \times \mathrm{GeV}^{-1} \mathrm{cm}^{-2} \mathrm{s}^{-1} \mathrm{sr}^{-1}$ (at 100 TeV). The sensitive energy range for this dataset is 3 - 550 TeV under the SPL assumption. This data was also used to measure the flux under a broken power law, however we did not find any evidence of a low energy cutoff., Comment: 27 pages, 28 figures

Abstract: Biological neural networks effortlessly tackle complex computational problems and excel at predicting outcomes from noisy, incomplete data, a task that poses significant challenges to traditional processors. Artificial neural networks (ANNs), inspired by these biological counterparts, have emerged as powerful tools for deciphering intricate data patterns and making predictions. However, conventional ANNs can be viewed as "point estimates" that do not capture the uncertainty of prediction, which is an inherently probabilistic process. In contrast, treating an ANN as a probabilistic model derived via Bayesian inference poses significant challenges for conventional deterministic computing architectures. Here, we use chaotic light in combination with incoherent photonic data processing to enable high-speed probabilistic computation and uncertainty quantification. Since both the chaotic light source and the photonic crossbar support multiple independent computational wavelength channels, we sample from the output distributions in parallel at a sampling rate of 70.4 GS/s, limited only by the electronic interface. We exploit the photonic probabilistic architecture to simultaneously perform image classification and uncertainty prediction via a Bayesian neural network. Our prototype demonstrates the seamless cointegration of a physical entropy source and a computational architecture that enables ultrafast probabilistic computation by parallel sampling.

19. Speeding up Fermionic Lattice Calculations with Photonic Accelerated Inverters

Abstract: Lattice field theory (LFT) is the standard non-perturbative method to perform numerical calculations of quantum field theory. However, the typical bottleneck of fermionic lattice calculations is the inversion of the Dirac matrix. This inversion is solved by iterative methods, like the conjugate gradient algorithm, where matrix-vector multiplications (MVMs) are the main operation. Photonic integrated circuits excel in performing quick and energy-efficient MVMs, but at the same time, they are known to have low accuracy. This can be overcome by using mixed precision methods. In this paper, we explore the idea of using photonic technology to fulfil the demand for computational power of fermionic lattice calculations. These methods have the potential to reduce computation costs by one order of magnitude. Abstract: Name that Neutrino is a citizen science project where volunteers aid in classification of events for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, an immense particle detector at the geographic South Pole. From March 2023 to September 2023, volunteers did classifications of videos produced from simulated data of both neutrino signal and background interactions. Name that Neutrino obtained more than 128,000 classifications by over 1,800 registered volunteers that were compared to results obtained by a deep neural network machine-learning algorithm. Possible improvements for both Name that Neutrino and the deep neural network are discussed.

Abstract: Plastic self-adaptation, nonlinear recurrent dynamics and multi-scale memory are desired features in hardware implementations of neural networks, because they enable them to learn, adapt and process information similarly to the way biological brains do. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate these properties occurring in arrays of photonic neurons. Importantly, this is realised autonomously in an emergent fashion, without the need for an external controller setting weights and without explicit feedback of a global reward signal. Using a hierarchy of such arrays coupled to a backpropagation-free training algorithm based on simple logistic regression, we are able to achieve a performance of 98.2% on the MNIST task, a popular benchmark task looking at classification of written digits. The plastic nodes consist of silicon photonics microring resonators covered by a patch of phase-change material that implements nonvolatile memory. The system is compact, robust, and straightforward to scale up through the use of multiple wavelengths. Moreover, it constitutes a unique platform to test and efficiently implement biologically plausible learning schemes at a high processing speed.

Abstract: Nanophotonic quantum devices can significantly boost light-matter interaction which is important for applications such as quantum networks. Reaching a high interaction strength between an optical transition of a spin system and a single mode of light is an essential step which demands precise control over all degrees of freedom of the optical coupling. While current devices have reached a high accuracy of emitter positioning, the placement process remains overall statistically, reducing the device fabrication yield. Furthermore, not all degrees of freedom of the optical coupling can be controlled limiting the device performance. Here, we develop a hybrid approach based on negatively-charged silicon-vacancy center in nanodiamonds coupled to a mode of a Si$_3$N$_4$-photonic crystal cavity, where all terms of the coupling strength can be controlled individually. We use the frequency of coherent Rabi-oscillations and line-broadening as a measure of the device performance. This allows for iterative optimization of the position and the rotation of the dipole with respect to individual, preselected modes of light. Abstract: Abstract Background Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is gaining recognition as a promising expression system for the production of recombinant proteins. However, its performance as a cellular biofactory remains suboptimal, especially with respect to consistent expression of heterologous genes. Gene silencing mechanisms, position effect, and low nuclear transgene expression are major drawbacks for recombinant protein production in this model system. To unveil the molecular changes following transgene insertion, retention, and expression in this species, we genetically engineered C. reinhardtii wild type strain 137c (strain cc-125 mt+) to express the fluorescent protein mVenus and subsequently analysed its intracellular proteome. Results The obtained transgenic cell lines showed differences in abundance in more than 400 proteins, with multiple pathways altered post-transformation. Proteins involved in chromatin remodelling, translation initiation and elongation, and protein quality control and transport were found in lower abundance. On the other hand, ribosomal proteins showed higher abundance, a signal of ribosomal stress response. Conclusions These results provide new insights into the modifications of C. reinhardtii proteome after transformation, highlighting possible pathways involved in gene silencing. Moreover, this study identifies multiple protein targets for future genetic engineering approaches to improve the prospective use of C. reinhardtii as cell biofactory for industrial applications.

Leveraging the internal replicate structure of two novel single-cell fluorescent microscopy datasets, we propose generally applicable tests to assess the extent to which models learn causal representations across increasingly challenging levels of OOD-generalization. We show that despite seemingly strong performance, as assessed by other established metrics, both naive and contemporary baselines designed to ward against confounding, collapse on these tests. Abstract: Electronically reprogrammable photonic circuits based on phase-change chalcogenides present an avenue to resolve the von-Neumann bottleneck; however, implementation of such hybrid photonic-electronic processing has not achieved computational success. Here, we achieve this milestone by demonstrating an in-memory photonic-electronic dot-product engine, one that decouples electronic programming of phase-change materials (PCMs) and photonic computation. Specifically, we develop non-volatile electronically reprogrammable PCM memory cells with a record-high 4-bit weight encoding, the lowest energy consumption per unit modulation depth (1.7 nJ per dB) for Erase operation (crystallization), and a high switching contrast (158.5%) using non-resonant silicon-on-insulator waveguide microheater devices. This enables us to perform parallel multiplications for image processing with a superior contrast-to-noise ratio (greater than 87.36) that leads to an enhanced computing accuracy (standard deviation less than 0.007). An in-memory hybrid computing system is developed in hardware for convolutional processing for recognizing images from the MNIST database with inferencing accuracies of 86% and 87%.

Abstract: Efficient fiber-to-chip couplers for multi-port access to photonic integrated circuits are paramount for a broad class of applications, ranging, e.g., from telecommunication to photonic computing and quantum technologies. While grating-based approaches are convenient for out-of-plane access and often desirable from a packaging point of view, on low-index photonic platforms, such as silicon nitride or thin-film lithium niobate, the limited grating strength has thus far hindered the achievement of coupling efficiencies comparable to the ones attainable in silicon photonics. Here we present a flexible strategy for the realization of highly efficient grating couplers on low-index photonic platforms. To simultaneously reach a high scattering efficiency and a near-unitary modal overlap with optical fibers, we make use of self-imaging gratings designed with a negative diffraction angle. To ensure high directionality of the diffracted light, we take advantage of a metal back-reflector patterned underneath the grating structure by cryogenic deep reactive ion etching of the silicon handle. Using silicon nitride as a testbed material, we experimentally demonstrate coupling efficiency up to -0.55 dB in the telecom C-band with near unity chip-scale device yield.

This study builds upon the significance of the urban context and takes the typical Chinese megacity Wuhan as a case study. First, the research systematically outlines the diachronic development of architectural features and styles in Wuhan and meticulously analyses the prevailing problems. Subsequently, an evaluation is conducted on the efficacy of existing architectural features and style management policies and the approval processes for architectural schemes. Finally, the research formulates a comprehensive architectural feature and style management and implementation system that harmonizes Wuhan’s urban cultural heritage and urban identification characteristics. Abstract: Abstract A plant parasite associated with the white haze disease in apples, the Basidiomycota Gjaerumia minor, has been found in most samples of the global bathypelagic ocean. An analysis of environmental 18S rDNA sequences on 12 vertical profiles of the Malaspina 2010 expedition shows that the relative abundance of this cultured species increases with depth while its distribution is remarkably different between the deep waters of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, being present in higher concentrations in the former. This is evident from sequence analysis and a microscopic survey with a species-specific newly designed TSA-FISH probe. Several hints point to the hypothesis that G. minor is transported to the deep ocean attached to particles, and the absence of G. minor in bathypelagic Atlantic waters could then be explained by the absence of this organism in surface waters of the equatorial Atlantic. The good correlation of G. minor biomass with Apparent Oxygen Utilization, recalcitrant carbon and free-living prokaryotic biomass in South Pacific waters, together with the identification of the observed cells as yeasts and not as resting spores (teliospores), point to the possibility that once arrived at deep layers this species keeps on growing and thriving.

Abstract: Abstract In contrast to inherited transthyretin amyloidosis (A-ATTRv), neuropathy is not a classic leading symptom of wild type transthyretin amyloidosis (A-ATTRwt). However, neurological symptoms are increasingly relevant in A-ATTRwt as well. To better understand the role of neurological symptoms in A-ATTRwt, A-ATTRwt patients were prospectively characterized at Amyloidosis Center Charité Berlin (ACCB) between 2018 and 2023 using detailed neurological examination, quality of life questionnaires, and analysis of age- and BMI-adapted serum neurofilament light chain (NFL) levels. 16 out of 73 (21.9%) patients presented with a severe neuropathy which we defined by a Neuropathy Impairment Score (NIS) of 20 or more. In this group, quality of life was reduced, peripheral neuropathy was more severe, and spinal stenosis and joint replacements were frequent. Age- and BMI matched serum NFL levels were markedly elevated in patients with a NIS ≥ 20. We therefore conclude that highly abnormal values in neuropathy scores such as the NIS occur in A-ATTRwt, and have an important impact on quality of life. Both peripheral neuropathy and spinal canal stenosis are likely contributors. Serum NFL may serve as a biomarker for neurological affection in patients with A-ATTRwt. It will be important to consider neurological aspects of A-ATTRwt for diagnosis, clinical follow-up, and future treatment development.

Abstract: In this work, we introduce the moduli stack $\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}^r$ of $n$-pointed, $A_r$-stable curves of genus $g$ and use it to compute the Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_3$. As a byproduct, we also compute the Chow ring of $\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_3^7$. Abstract: Scalable photonic quantum computing architectures pose stringent requirements on photonic processing devices. The need for low-loss high-speed reconfigurable circuits and near-deterministic resource state generators are some of the most challenging requirements. Here we develop an integrated photonic platform based on thin-film lithium niobate and interface it with deterministic solid-state single-photon sources based on quantum dots in nanophotonic waveguides. The generated photons are processed with low-loss circuits programmable at speeds of several GHz. We realize a variety of key photonic quantum information processing functionalities with the high-speed circuits, including on-chip quantum interference, photon demultiplexing, and reprogrammability of a four-mode universal photonic circuit. These results show a promising path forward for scalable photonic quantum technologies by merging integrated photonics with solid-state deterministic photon sources in a heterogeneous approach to scaling up.

46. Upper bounds on the Rate of Uniformly-Random Codes for the Deletion Channel

Abstract: We consider the maximum coding rate achievable by uniformly-random codes for the deletion channel. We prove an upper bound that's within 0.1 of the best known lower bounds for all values of the deletion probability $d,$ and much closer for small and large $d.$ We give simulation results which suggest that our upper bound is within 0.05 of the exact value for all $d$, and within $0.01$ for $d>0.75$. Despite our upper bounds, based on simulations, we conjecture that a positive rate is achievable with uniformly-random codes for all deletion probabilities less than 1. Our results imply impossibility results for the (equivalent) problem of compression of i.i.d. sources correlated via the deletion channel, a relevant model for DNA storage.

Abstract: Abstract Background The analysis of large and complex biological datasets in bioinformatics poses a significant challenge to achieving reproducible research outcomes due to inconsistencies and the lack of standardization in the analysis process. These issues can lead to discrepancies in results, undermining the credibility and impact of bioinformatics research and creating mistrust in the scientific process. To address these challenges, open science practices such as sharing data, code, and methods have been encouraged. Results CREDO, a Customizable, REproducible, DOcker file generator for bioinformatics applications, has been developed as a tool to moderate reproducibility issues by building and distributing docker containers with embedded bioinformatics tools. CREDO simplifies the process of generating Docker images, facilitating reproducibility and efficient research in bioinformatics. The crucial step in generating a Docker image is creating the Dockerfile, which requires incorporating heterogeneous packages and environments such as Bioconductor and Conda. CREDO stores all required package information and dependencies in a Github-compatible format to enhance Docker image reproducibility, allowing easy image creation from scratch. The user-friendly GUI and CREDO's ability to generate modular Docker images make it an ideal tool for life scientists to efficiently create Docker images. Overall, CREDO is a valuable tool for addressing reproducibility issues in bioinformatics research and promoting open science practices.

Abstract: Abstract The Ocean microbiome has a crucial role in Earth’s biogeochemical cycles. During the last decade, global cruises such as Tara Oceans and the Malaspina Expedition have expanded our understanding of the diversity and genetic repertoire of marine microbes. Nevertheless, there are still knowledge gaps regarding their diversity patterns throughout depth gradients ranging from the surface to the deep ocean. Here we present a dataset of 76 microbial metagenomes (MProfile) of the picoplankton size fraction (0.2–3.0 µm) collected in 11 vertical profiles covering contrasting ocean regions sampled during the Malaspina Expedition circumnavigation (7 depths, from surface to 4,000 m deep). The MProfile dataset produced 1.66 Tbp of raw DNA sequences from which we derived: 17.4 million genes clustered at 95% sequence similarity (M-GeneDB-VP), 2,672 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) of Archaea and Bacteria (Malaspina-VP-MAGs), and over 100,000 viral genomic sequences. This dataset will be a valuable resource for exploring the functional and taxonomic connectivity between the photic and bathypelagic tropical and sub-tropical ocean, while increasing our general knowledge of the Ocean microbiome.

49. Scalable and efficient grating couplers on low-index photonic platforms enabled by cryogenic deep silicon etching

Abstract: Abstract Efficient fiber-to-chip couplers for multi-port access to photonic integrated circuits are paramount for a broad class of applications, ranging, e.g., from telecommunication to photonic computing and quantum technologies. Grating-based approaches are often desirable for providing out-of-plane access to the photonic circuits. However, on photonic platforms characterized by a refractive index ≃ 2 at telecom wavelength, such as silicon nitride or thin-film lithium niobate, the limited scattering strength has thus far hindered the achievement of coupling efficiencies comparable to the ones attainable in silicon photonics. Here we present a flexible strategy for the realization of highly efficient grating couplers on such low-index photonic platforms. To simultaneously reach a high scattering efficiency and a near-unitary modal overlap with optical fibers, we make use of self-imaging gratings designed with a negative diffraction angle. To ensure high directionality of the diffracted light, we take advantage of a metal back-reflector patterned underneath the grating structure by cryogenic deep reactive ion etching of the silicon handle. Using silicon nitride as a testbed material, we experimentally demonstrate coupling efficiency up to − 0.55 dB in the telecom C-band with high chip-scale device yield.

50. Hybrid Quantum Nanophotonics: Interfacing Color Center in Nanodiamonds with Si3N4-Photonics

Abstract: This chapter covers recent developments in the field of hybrid quantum photonics based on color centers in nanodiamonds and Si3N4-photonics towards a technology platform with applications in quantum information processing and quantum information distribution. The methodological approach can be divided in three main tasks. First, the fabrication and optimization of Si3N4-photonics. Second, the creation, characterization and control of color centers in nanodiamonds. Third, the assembly of hybrid quantum photonics by integrating the nanodiamonds into the photonic structures. One focus will be the efficient interfacing of the color centers done by optimizing the optical coupling. The chapter describes recent progress in all three steps and summarizes the established hybrid platform. We believe, that the hybrid approach provides a promising path to realize quantum photonic applications, such as quantum networks or quantum repeaters, in the near future., Comment: 55 pages, 28 figures
