1. Matching Composition and Efficient Weight Reduction in Dynamic Matching

Abstract

We consider the foundational problem of maintaining a $(1-\varepsilon)$-approximate maximum weight matching (MWM) in an $n$-node dynamic graph undergoing edge insertions and deletions. We provide a general reduction that reduces the problem on graphs with a weight range of $\mathrm{poly}(n)$ to $\mathrm{poly}(1/\varepsilon)$ at the cost of just an additive $\mathrm{poly}(1/\varepsilon)$ in update time. This improves upon the prior reduction of Gupta-Peng (FOCS 2013) which reduces the problem to a weight range of $\varepsilon^{-O(1/\varepsilon)}$ with a multiplicative cost of $O(\log n)$. When combined with a reduction of Bernstein-Dudeja-Langley (STOC 2021) this yields a reduction from dynamic $(1-\varepsilon)$-approximate MWM in bipartite graphs with a weight range of $\mathrm{poly}(n)$ to dynamic $(1-\varepsilon)$-approximate maximum cardinality matching in bipartite graphs at the cost of a multiplicative $\mathrm{poly}(1/\varepsilon)$ in update time, thereby resolving an open problem in [GP'13; BDL'21]. Additionally, we show that our approach is amenable to MWM problems in streaming, shared-memory work-depth, and massively parallel computation models. We also apply our techniques to obtain an efficient dynamic algorithm for rounding weighted fractional matchings in general graphs. Underlying our framework is a new structural result about MWM that we call the "matching composition lemma" and new dynamic matching subroutines that may be of independent interest.

2. Streaming and Communication Complexity of Load-Balancing via Matching Contractors

Abstract

In the load-balancing problem, we have an $n$-vertex bipartite graph $G=(L, R, E)$ between a set of clients and servers. The goal is to find an assignment of all clients to the servers, while minimizing the maximum load on each server, where load of a server is the number of clients assigned to it. We study load-balancing in the one-way communication model: the edges of the input graph are partitioned between Alice and Bob, and Alice needs to send a message to Bob for him to output the solution. We show that settling the one-way communication complexity of load-balancing is equivalent to a natural sparsification problem for load-balancing. We then prove a dual interpretation of this sparsifier, showing that the minimum density of a sparsifier is effectively the same as the maximum density one can achieve for an extremal graph family that is new to this paper, called Matching-Contractors; these graphs are intimately connected to the well-known Ruzsa-Szemeredi graphs and generalize them in certain aspects. Our chain of equivalences thus shows that the one-way communication complexity of load-balancing can be reduced to a purely graph theoretic question: what is the maximum density of a Matching-Contractor on $n$ vertices? Finally, we present a novel combinatorial construction of some-what dense Matching-Contractors, which implies a strong one-way communication lower bound for load-balancing: any one-way protocol (even randomized) with $\tilde{O}(n)$ communication cannot achieve a better than $n^{\frac14-o(1)}$-approximation. Previously, no non-trivial lower bounds were known for protocols with even $O(n\log{n})$ bits of communication. Abstract

One of the most challenging problems in the computational study of localization in quantum manybody systems is to capture the effects of rare events, which requires sampling over exponentially many disorder realizations. We implement an efficient procedure on a quantum processor, leveraging quantum parallelism, to efficiently sample over all disorder realizations. We observe localization without disorder in quantum many-body dynamics in one and two dimensions: perturbations do not diffuse even though both the generator of evolution and the initial states are fully translationally invariant. The disorder strength as well as its density can be readily tuned using the initial state. Furthermore, we demonstrate the versatility of our platform by measuring Renyi entropies. Our method could also be extended to higher moments of the physical observables and disorder learning.

4. ALLO: A Photorealistic Dataset and Data Generation Pipeline for Anomaly Detection During Robotic Proximity Operations in Lunar Orbit

Abstract

NASA's forthcoming Lunar Gateway space station, which will be uncrewed most of the time, will need to operate with an unprecedented level of autonomy. Enhancing autonomy on the Gateway presents several unique challenges, one of which is to equip the Canadarm3, the Gateway's external robotic system, with the capability to perform worksite monitoring. Monitoring will involve using the arm's inspection cameras to detect any anomalies within the operating environment, a task complicated by the widely-varying lighting conditions in space. In this paper, we introduce the visual anomaly detection and localization task for space applications and establish a benchmark with our novel synthetic dataset called ALLO (for Anomaly Localization in Lunar Orbit). We develop a complete data generation pipeline to create ALLO, which we use to evaluate the performance of state-of-the-art visual anomaly detection algorithms. Abstract

Lattice gauge theories (LGTs) can be employed to understand a wide range of phenomena, from elementary particle scattering in high-energy physics to effective descriptions of many-body interactions in materials. Studying dynamical properties of emergent phases can be challenging as it requires solving many-body problems that are generally beyond perturbative limits. We investigate the dynamics of local excitations in a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGT using a two-dimensional lattice of superconducting qubits. We first construct a simple variational circuit which prepares low-energy states that have a large overlap with the ground state; then we create particles with local gates and simulate their quantum dynamics via a discretized time evolution. As the effective magnetic field is increased, our measurements show signatures of transitioning from deconfined to confined dynamics. For confined excitations, the magnetic field induces a tension in the string connecting them. Our method allows us to experimentally image string dynamics in a (2+1)D LGT from which we uncover two distinct regimes inside the confining phase: for weak confinement the string fluctuates strongly in the transverse direction, while for strong confinement transverse fluctuations are effectively frozen. In addition, we demonstrate a resonance condition at which dynamical string breaking is facilitated. Our LGT implementation on a quantum processor presents a novel set of techniques for investigating emergent particle and string dynamics.

Abstract

Improving the automatic and timely recognition of construction and demolition waste (C&DW) composition is crucial for enhancing business returns, economic outcomes, and sustainability. Technologies like computer vision, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and internet of things (IoT) are increasingly integrated into waste processing to achieve these goals. While deep learning (DL) models show promise in recognising homogeneous C&DW piles, few studies assess their performance with mixed, highly contaminated material in commercial settings. Drawing on extensive experience at a C&DW materials recovery facility (MRF) in Sydney, Australia, we explore the challenges and opportunities in developing an advanced automated mixed C&DW management system. We begin with an overview of the evolution of waste management in the construction industry, highlighting its environmental, economic, and societal impacts. We review various C&DW analysis techniques, concluding that DL-based visual methods are the optimal solution. Additionally, we examine the progression of sensor and camera technologies for C&DW analysis as well as the evolution of DL algorithms focused on object detection and material segmentation. We also discuss C&DW datasets, their curation, and innovative methods for their creation. Finally, we share insights on C&DW visual analysis, addressing technical and commercial challenges, research trends, and future directions for mixed C&DW analysis. This paper aims to improve the efficiency of C&DW management by providing valuable insights for ongoing and future research and development efforts in this critical sector.

Abstract

Quantum error correction provides a path to reach practical quantum computing by combining multiple physical qubits into a logical qubit, where the logical error rate is suppressed exponentially as more qubits are added. However, this exponential suppression only occurs if the physical error rate is below a critical threshold. In this work, we present two surface code memories operating below this threshold: a distance-7 code and a distance-5 code integrated with a real-time decoder. The logical error rate of our larger quantum memory is suppressed by a factor of $\Lambda$ = 2.14 $\pm$ 0.02 when increasing the code distance by two, culminating in a 101-qubit distance-7 code with 0.143% $\pm$ 0.003% error per cycle of error correction. This logical memory is also beyond break-even, exceeding its best physical qubit's lifetime by a factor of 2.4 $\pm$ 0.3. We maintain below-threshold performance when decoding in real time, achieving an average decoder latency of 63 $\mu$s at distance-5 up to a million cycles, with a cycle time of 1.1 $\mu$s. To probe the limits of our error-correction performance, we run repetition codes up to distance-29 and find that logical performance is limited by rare correlated error events occurring approximately once every hour, or 3 $\times$ 10$^9$ cycles. Abstract

Neurocognitive aging researchers are increasingly focused on the locus coeruleus, a neuromodulatory brainstem structure that degrades with age. With this rapid growth, the field will benefit from consensus regarding which magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) metrics of locus coeruleus structure are most sensitive to age and cognition. To address this need, the current study acquired magnetization transfer- and diffusion-weighted MRI images in younger and older adults who also completed a free recall memory task. Results revealed significantly larger differences between younger and older adults for maximum than average magnetization transfer-weighted contrast (MTC), axial than mean or radial single-tensor diffusivity (DTI), and free than restricted multi-compartment diffusion (NODDI) metrics in the locus coeruleus; with maximum MTC being the best predictor of age group. Age effects for all imaging modalities interacted with sex, with larger age group differences in males than females for MTC and NODDI metrics. Age group differences also varied across locus coeruleus subdivision for DTI and NODDI metrics, and across locus coeruleus hemispheres for MTC. Within older adults, however, there were no significant effects of age on MTC or DTI metrics, only an interaction between age and sex for free diffusion. Finally, independent of age and sex, higher restricted diffusion in the locus coeruleus was significantly related to better (lower) recall variability, but not mean recall. Whereas MTC has been widely used in the literature, our comparison between the average and maximum MTC metrics, inclusion of DTI and NODDI metrics, and breakdowns by locus coeruleus subdivision and hemisphere make important and novel contributions to our understanding of the aging of locus coeruleus structure.

Abstract

Understanding how interacting particles approach thermal equilibrium is a major challenge of quantum simulators. Unlocking the full potential of such systems toward this goal requires flexible initial state preparation, precise time evolution, and extensive probes for final state characterization. We present a quantum simulator comprising 69 superconducting qubits which supports both universal quantum gates and high-fidelity analog evolution, with performance beyond the reach of classical simulation in cross-entropy benchmarking experiments. Emulating a two-dimensional (2D) XY quantum magnet, we leverage a wide range of measurement techniques to study quantum states after ramps from an antiferromagnetic initial state. We observe signatures of the classical Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition, as well as strong deviations from Kibble-Zurek scaling predictions attributed to the interplay between quantum and classical coarsening of the correlated domains. This interpretation is corroborated by injecting variable energy density into the initial state, which enables studying the effects of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) in targeted parts of the eigenspectrum. Finally, we digitally prepare the system in pairwise-entangled dimer states and image the transport of energy and vorticity during thermalization. These results establish the efficacy of superconducting analog-digital quantum processors for preparing states across many-body spectra and unveiling their thermalization dynamics.

Abstract

One of the keys to the success of collaborative learning is balanced participation by all learners, but this does not always happen naturally. Pedagogical robots have the potential to facilitate balance. However, it remains unclear what participation balance robots should aim at; various metrics have been proposed, but it is still an open question whether we should balance human participation in human-human interactions (HHI) or human-robot interactions (HRI) and whether we should consider robots' participation in collaborative learning involving multiple humans and a robot. This paper examines collaborative learning between a pair of students and a teachable robot that acts as a peer tutee to answer the aforementioned question. Through an exploratory study, we hypothesize which balance metrics in the literature and which portions of dialogues (including vs. excluding robots' participation and human participation in HHI vs. HRI) will better predict learning as a group. We test the hypotheses with another study and replicate them with automatically obtained units of participation to simulate the information available to robots when they adaptively fix imbalances in real-time. Abstract

Novel methods of analysis are needed to help advance our understanding of the intricate interplay between landscape changes, population dynamics, and sustainable development. Self organized machine learning has been highly successful in the analysis of visual data the human expert eye may not be able to see. Thus, subtle but significant changes in fine visual detail in images relating to trending alterations in natural or urban landscapes may remain undetected. In the course of time, such changes may be the cause or the consequence of measurable human impact. Capturing such change in imaging data as early as possible can make critical information readily available to citizens, professionals and policymakers. This promotes change awareness, and facilitates early decision making for action. Here, we use unsupervised Artificial Intelligence (AI) that exploits principles of self-organized biological visual learning for the analysis of imaging time series. The quantization error in the output of a Self Organizing Map prototype is exploited as a computational metric of variability and change. Given the proven sensitivity of this neural network metric to the intensity and polarity of image pixel colour, it is shown to capture critical changes in urban landscapes. This is achieved here on imaging data for two regions of geographic interest in Las Vegas County, Nevada, USA. The SOM analysis is combined with the statistical analysis of demographic data revealing human impacts. These latter are significantly correlated with the structural change trends in the numerical data for the specific regions of interest. By correlating data relative to the impact of human activities with numerical data indicating structural evolution, human footprint related environmental changes can be predictably scaled.

Although catheter ablation (CA) is still the first-line treatment for persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) patients, its limited long-term success rate has motivated clinical interest in preoperative prediction on the procedures outcome to provide optimized patient selection, limit repeated procedures, hospitalization rates, and treatment costs. To this respect, dominant frequency (DF) and amplitude of fibrillatory waves (f-waves) reflected on the ECG have provided promising results. Hence this work explores the ability of a novel set of frequency and amplitud f-waves features, such as spectral entropy (SE), spectral flatness measure (SFM), and amplitud spectrum area (AMSA), along with DF and normalized f-wave amplitude (NFWA), to improve CA outcome prediction. Despite all single indices reported statistically significant differences between patients who relapsed to AF and those who maintained sinus rhythm after a follow up of 9 months for 204 6 s-length ECG intervals extracted from 51 persistent AF patients, they obtained a limited discriminant ability ranging between 55 and 62%, which was overcome by 15 - 23% when NFWA, SE and AMSA were combined. Consequently, this combination of frequency and amplitude features of the fwaves seems to provide new insights about the atrial substrate remodeling, which could be helpful in improving preoperative CA outcome prediction.

16. Coherent turbulent structures in a rapid contraction

Abstract

The coherent vortical structures in turbulent flow through a strong 16:1 3-D contraction, are studied using time-resolved volumetric measurements. Visualization using vorticity magnitude criterion shows the emergence of long, stretched cylindrical vortices aligned with the mean flow. This alignment is quantified by PDFs of the direction cosines. We propose two measures to quantify the alignment, the peak height in the probability and a coefficient from the moment of the PDF, both of which reaffirm the strong streamwise alignment. The r.m.s. streamwise vorticty grows within the contraction to becoming 4.5 times larger than the transverse component, at the downstream location where the contraction ratio C=11. The characteristic vortices become as long as the measurement volume, or more than 4 times the integral scale at the entrance to the contraction. We also characterize the vorticity enhancement along individual vortices, measuring 65% strengthening over the distance where C goes from 4 to 11. The prevalence of these coherent structures is estimated from 700,000 measured volumes, showing that near the outlet it is more likely to have 1 or 2 of these structures present than none.

17. Extending Understanding of the Relationship between School District COVID-19 Reopening Plan Signals and Enrollment Decline

Preceding the 2020-21 school year, school districts engaged their communities by sharing pandemic school reopening plans, outlining the learning modalities and support services to be made accessible to students. Existing research has highlighted a connection between a district's primary reopening method and changes in student enrollment--a crucial aspect for gauging responsiveness to different learning environments. Conversely, limited research has established the relationship between new health and safety procedures, provisions for vulnerable students, learning support services, or the level of community engagement undertaken by a district in creating reopening plans and student enrollment change, independent of the method of reopening (e.g., in-person or distanced). We do so using two methodological approaches. First, we use differences-in-differences approaches to estimate the impact of reopening method on enrollment changes. Second, we leverage granular data of reopening plans for a representative sample of Missouri school districts in a triple-differences approach. We find that signaling the intent to begin the school year with distanced instruction generated a 3% decline in enrollment beyond pandemic-era declines, concentrated among the youngest students. Extending existing reopening findings, we also estimate that enrollment declined an additional 5% in middle schools where districts did not require masking.

Abstract

Quantum science and technology promise the realization of a powerful computational resource that relies on a network of quantum processors connected with low loss and low noise communication channels capable of distributing entangled states [1,2]. While superconducting microwave qubits (3-8 GHz) operating in cryogenic environments have emerged as promising candidates for quantum processor nodes due to their strong Josephson nonlinearity and low loss [3], the information between spatially separated processor nodes will likely be carried at room temperature via telecommunication photons (200 THz) propagating in low loss optical fibers. Transduction of quantum information [4-10] between these disparate frequencies is therefore critical to leverage the advantages of each platform by interfacing quantum resources. Here, we demonstrate coherent optical control of a superconducting qubit. We achieve this by developing a microwave-optical quantum transducer that operates with up to 1.18% conversion efficiency (1.16% cooperativity) and demonstrate optically-driven Rabi oscillations (2.27 MHz) in a superconducting qubit without impacting qubit coherence times (800 ns). Finally, we discuss outlooks towards using the transducer to network quantum processor nodes.

Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Tourette syndrome (TS), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) display strong male sex bias, due to a combination of genetic and biological factors, as well as selective ascertainment. While the hemizygous nature of chromosome X (Chr X) in males has long been postulated as a key point of male vulnerability, rare genetic variation on this chromosome has not been systematically characterized in large-scale whole exome sequencing studies of idiopathic ASD, TS, and ADHD. Here, we take advantage of informative recombinations in simplex ASD families to pinpoint risk-enriched regions on Chr X, within which rare maternally-inherited damaging variants carry substantial risk in males with ASD. We then apply a modified transmission disequilibrium test to 13,052 ASD probands and identify a novel high confidence ASD risk gene at exome-wide significance (MAGEC3). Finally, we observe that rare damaging variants within these risk regions carry similar effect sizes in males with TS or ADHD, further clarifying genetic mechanisms underlying male vulnerability in multiple neurodevelopmental disorders that can be exploited for systematic gene discovery.

Abstract

Abstract Aggression—and its role in human societal development—continues to be hotly debated within both the sciences and the humanities. Whatever the evolutionary origins and repercussions of interpersonal and intergroup conflict for the human story, cultures around the globe have invested significant time and effort into designing deadly hand-held weaponry. Here, we describe for the first time, how humans deliver a deadly strike using two iconic and widespread Aboriginal Australian weapons: the kodj and the leangle with parrying shield. We present the world’s first evaluation of striking biomechanics and human and weapon efficiency regarding this class of implement. Results demonstrate the leangle is far more effective at delivering devastating blows to the human body, while the kodj—a multi-functional tool—is more efficient for a human to manoeuvre and still capable of delivering severe blows that can cause death. Together, these data provide the beginnings of an in-depth understanding of how hand-held weaponry has impacted the human body throughout the deep past.

Subjects and methods Men aged 50 to 70, or 45 to 70 if Black or with a family history of prostate cancer, were identified from participating general practitioner (GP) records. Short message service (SMS) texts invited men to visit www.talkprostate.co.uk for information on prostate cancer and give consent to prostate‐specific antigen (PSA) checks coordinated by a third‐party virtual healthcare provider. Elevated age‐related PSA levels, or levels below age‐related thresholds but at 3 ng/mL or more, triggered referral to a rapid access urology clinic. GPs were informed of the results. Results From 1842 text messages inviting 1549 people, 544 men consented to a PSA check. From 500 phlebotomy appointments, 485 (30% of invited men) took the PSA test of whom 68 (14%) were referred with an elevated PSA. After clinical review with multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mp‐MRI), 22 patients underwent transperineal biopsies, and prostate cancer was detected in 18 men of whom 17 (95%) had clinically significant cancer. Conclusion Our Targeted Prostate Cancer Health Check system identifies men at risk without burdening primary care. Awareness on prostate cancer risk was raised in 1549 invited men, half of whom were further educated via the registration website. One third of invited men were checked in whom clinically significant prostate cancer was found in 3.5%.

Abstract

Abstract Background Vitamin D insufficiency (25OHD, 50–75 nmolˑl− 1) is a common issue within healthy adults and elite athletes and is associated with decreased musculoskeletal health and performance. However, few studies have identified the prevalence and risk factors associated with vitamin D insufficiency within elite Para-Athletes. Methods An electronic search was completed on the 5th January 2023 and updated on the 21st June 2024, searching Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library and EASY (originally OpenGrey). To meet the eligibility criteria, retrieved studies were required to include at least one baseline measure of a vitamin D biomarker from elite Para-Athletes performing at national or international levels and therefore all quantitative study designs could be included. Risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist (8-item) for analytical cross-sectional studies. Data from the eligible studies was extracted and charted, with a supporting narrative synthesis. Results The search strategy retrieved 3083 articles, of which ten studies met the inclusion criteria. In total there were n = 355 Para-Athletes, 69.6% of which comprised of males in the included studies. Across the ten included studies, n = 546 samples were taken from n = 355 Para-Athletes across different seasons and based upon the 25(OH)D insufficiency and deficiency thresholds set by each individual study 43.2% of the samples were considered insufficient and 28.1% deficient. During the winter months vitamin D insufficiency was at its most prevalent at 74.1%, compared to 57.1% in summer of the 25(OH)D samples measured in Para-Athletes. Wheelchair athletes who competed in indoor sports were also more susceptible to low vitamin D. Conclusion This review has highlighted that vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency is highly prevalent in elite level Para-Athletes, all year, across both summer and winter months. Therefore, this review highlights the need for education, treatment, and preventative measures in elite Para-Athletes throughout the year. Abstract Lasso peptides, ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides, are primarily produced by bacteria and some archaea. Streptomyces lasso peptides have been known for their antimicrobial, anticancer, and antiviral properties. However, understanding their role in the morphology and production of secondary metabolites remains limited. We identified a previously unknown lasso peptide gene cluster in the genome of Streptomyces sp. L06. This gene cluster (LASS) produces two distinct lasso peptides, morphosin-1 and − 2. Notably, morphosin-2 is a member of a new subfamily of lasso peptides, with BGCs exhibiting a similar structure. When LASS was expressed in different Streptomyces hosts, it led to exciting phenotypic changes, including the absence of spores and damage in aerial mycelium development. In one of the hosts, LASS even triggered antibiotic formation. These findings open up a world of possibilities, suggesting the potential role of morphosins in shaping Streptomyces’ morphological and biochemical development.

25. Reciprocal hydrodynamic response estimation in a random spreading sea

Abstract

Direct estimation of the hydrodynamic response of an offshore structure in a random spreading sea can lead to large computational costs. In this paper the actual spreading sea is replaced by an idealised diffuse wave field and the diffuse field reciprocity (DFR) relationship is derived analytically and verified against diffraction analysis for offshore application. The DFR approach provides an analytical expression for the estimation of the wave loading spectrum in a spreading sea. It is very efficient because only the added damping coefficients are required. Furthermore, if normalised to the peak amplitude of a spreading sea, an upper bound response can be obtained using the reciprocal approach. And this is demonstrated using a spar type floating wind turbine. Given that the hydrodynamic coefficients are routine outputs for offshore structural design, engineers would obtain the upper bound response without additional computational cost using this new approach., Comment: 5 figures; 1 table

Abstract

Early caregiving adversity (ECA) is associated with elevated psychological symptomatology. While neurobehavioral ECA research has focused on socioemotional and cognitive development, ECA may also increase risk for low-level sensory processing challenges. However, no prior work has compared how diverse ECA exposures differentially relate to sensory processing, or, critically, how this might influence psychological outcomes. We examined sensory processing challenges in 183 8-17-year-old youth with and without histories of institutional (orphanage) or foster caregiving, with a particular focus on sensory over-responsivity (SOR), a pattern of intensified responses to sensory stimuli that may negatively impact mental health. We further tested whether sensory processing challenges are linked to elevated internalizing and externalizing symptoms common in ECA-exposed youth. Relative to nonadopted comparison youth, both groups of ECA-exposed youth had elevated sensory processing challenges, including SOR, and also had heightened internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Additionally, we found significant indirect effects of ECA on internalizing and externalizing symptoms through both general sensory processing challenges and SOR, covarying for age and sex assigned at birth. These findings suggest multiple forms of ECA confer risk for sensory processing challenges that may contribute to mental health outcomes, and motivate continuing examination of these symptoms, with possible long-term implications for screening and treatment following ECA.

Abstract

Recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) and GH receptor antagonists (GHAs) are used clinically to treat a range of disorders associated with GH deficiency or hypersecretion, respectively. However, these biotherapeutics can be difficult and expensive to manufacture with multiple challenges from recombinant protein generation through to the development of long-acting formulations required to improve the circulating half-life of the drug. In this review, we summarize methodologies and approaches used for making and purifying recombinant GH and GHA proteins, and strategies to improve pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties, including PEGylation and fusion proteins. Therapeutics that are in clinical use or are currently under development are also discussed.

Abstract

Two universal functional principles of Adaptive Resonance Theory simulate the brain code of all biological learning and adaptive intelligence. Low level representations of multisensory stimuli in their immediate environmental context are formed on the basis of bottom up activation and under the control of top down matching rules that integrate high level long term traces of contextual configuration. These universal coding principles lead to the establishment of lasting brain signatures of perceptual experience in all living species, from aplysiae to primates. They are revisited in this paper here on the basis of examples drawn from the original code and from some of the most recent related empirical findings on contextual modulation in the brain, highlighting the potential of Grossberg's pioneering insights and groundbreaking theoretical work for intelligent solutions in the domain of developmental and cognitive robotics.

Abstract

This paper builds on our previous work by exploiting Artificial Intelligence to predict individual grip force variability in manual robot control. Grip forces were recorded from various loci in the dominant and non dominant hands of individuals by means of wearable wireless sensor technology. Statistical analyses bring to the fore skill specific temporal variations in thousands of grip forces of a complete novice and a highly proficient expert in manual robot control. A brain inspired neural network model that uses the output metric of a Self Organizing Map with unsupervised winner take all learning was run on the sensor output from both hands of each user. The neural network metric expresses the difference between an input representation and its model representation at any given moment in time t and reliably captures the differences between novice and expert performance in terms of grip force variability.Functionally motivated spatiotemporal analysis of individual average grip forces, computed for time windows of constant size in the output of a restricted amount of task-relevant sensors in the dominant (preferred) hand, reveal finger-specific synergies reflecting robotic task skill. The analyses lead the way towards grip force monitoring in real time to permit tracking task skill evolution in trainees, or identify individual proficiency levels in human robot interaction in environmental contexts of high sensory uncertainty. Parsimonious Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistance will contribute to the outcome of new types of surgery, in particular single-port approaches such as NOTES (Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery) and SILS (Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery).

Abstract In our changing world, understanding plant community responses to global change drivers is critical for predicting future ecosystem composition and function. Plant functional traits promise to be a key predictive tool for many ecosystems, including grasslands; however, their use requires both complete plant community and functional trait data. Yet, representation of these data in global databases is sparse, particularly beyond a handful of most used traits and common species. Here we present the CoRRE Trait Data, spanning 17 traits (9 categorical, 8 continuous) anticipated to predict species’ responses to global change for 4,079 vascular plant species across 173 plant families present in 390 grassland experiments from around the world. The dataset contains complete categorical trait records for all 4,079 plant species obtained from a comprehensive literature search, as well as nearly complete coverage (99.97%) of imputed continuous trait values for a subset of 2,927 plant species. These data will shed light on mechanisms underlying population, community, and ecosystem responses to global change in grasslands worldwide.

41. Locus coeruleus contrast and diffusivity metrics differentially relate to age and memory performance

Abstract Neurocognitive aging researchers are increasingly focused on the locus coeruleus, a neuromodulatory brainstem structure that degrades with age. With this rapid growth, the field will benefit from consensus regarding which magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) metrics of locus coeruleus structure are most sensitive to age and cognition. To address this need, the current study acquired magnetization transfer- and diffusion-weighted MRI images in younger and older adults who also completed a free recall memory task. Results revealed significantly larger differences between younger and older adults for maximum than average magnetization transfer-weighted contrast (MTC), axial than mean or radial single-tensor diffusivity (DTI), and free than restricted multi-compartment diffusion (NODDI) metrics in the locus coeruleus; with maximum MTC being the best predictor of age group. Age effects for all imaging modalities interacted with sex, with larger age group differences in males than females for MTC and NODDI metrics. Age group differences also varied across locus coeruleus subdivision for DTI and NODDI metrics, and across locus coeruleus hemispheres for MTC. Within older adults, however, there were no significant effects of age on MTC or DTI metrics, only an interaction between age and sex for free diffusion. Finally, independent of age and sex, higher restricted diffusion in the locus coeruleus was significantly related to better (lower) recall variability, but not mean recall. Whereas MTC has been widely used in the literature, our comparison between the average and maximum MTC metrics, inclusion of DTI and NODDI metrics, and breakdowns by locus coeruleus subdivision and hemisphere make important and novel contributions to our understanding of the aging of locus coeruleus structure.

43. Beyond a Coefficient: An Interactive Process for Achieving Inter-Rater Consistency in Qualitative Coding

Though qualitative research has become more prevalent in practice over the last 30 years, there is still considerable uncertainty among researchers regarding how to ensure inter-rater consistency when teams are tasked with coding qualitative data. In this article, we offer an explanation of a methodology our qualitative team used to achieve systematic coding of our dataset in a way that preserved the contextual, subjective nature of the data, lent itself to the deductive and inductive creation of a layered codebook, and ensured consistent application of the codebook to varied types of data. This methodology prepared us to draw logical and substantiated conclusions during subsequent analyses; hence, the process serves as a welcome addition to the literature on consistently coding qualitative data in a manner that honors its defining characteristics. Abstract

In the weighted load balancing problem, the input is an $n$-vertex bipartite graph between a set of clients and a set of servers, and each client comes with some nonnegative real weight. The output is an assignment that maps each client to one of its adjacent servers, and the load of a server is then the sum of the weights of the clients assigned to it. The goal is to find an assignment that is well-balanced, typically captured by (approximately) minimizing either the $\ell_\infty$- or $\ell_2$-norm of the server loads. Generalizing both of these objectives, the all-norm load balancing problem asks for an assignment that approximately minimizes all $\ell_p$-norm objectives for $p \ge 1$, including $p = \infty$, simultaneously. Our main result is a deterministic $O(\log{n})$-pass $O(1)$-approximation semi-streaming algorithm for the all-norm load balancing problem. Prior to our work, only an $O(\log{n})$-pass $O(\log{n})$-approximation algorithm for the $\ell_\infty$-norm objective was known in the semi-streaming setting. Our algorithm uses a novel application of the multiplicative weights update method to a mixed covering/packing convex program for the all-norm load balancing problem involving an infinite number of constraints.

This paper presents a novel approach to the acquisition of language models from corpora. The framework builds on Cobweb, an early system for constructing taxonomic hierarchies of probabilistic concepts that used a tabular, attribute-value encoding of training cases and concepts, making it unsuitable for sequential input like language. In response, we explore three new extensions to Cobweb -- the Word, Leaf, and Path variants. These systems encode each training case as an anchor word and surrounding context words, and they store probabilistic descriptions of concepts as distributions over anchor and context information. As in the original Cobweb, a performance element sorts a new instance downward through the hierarchy and uses the final node to predict missing features. Learning is interleaved with performance, updating concept probabilities and hierarchy structure as classification occurs. Thus, the new approaches process training cases in an incremental, online manner that it very different from most methods for statistical language learning. We examine how well the three variants place synonyms together and keep homonyms apart, their ability to recall synonyms as a function of training set size, and their training efficiency. Abstract

Abstract Estimating the size of animal populations plays an important role in evidence‐based conservation and management. Some methods for estimating population size rely on animals being individually identifiable. Traditionally, this has been done by marking physically captured animals, but increasingly, animals with distinctive natural markings are surveyed noninvasively using cameras. Animal reidentification from photographs is usually done manually, which is expensive, laborious, and requires considerable skill. An alternative is to develop computer vision methods that can support or replace the manual identification task. We developed an automated approach using deep learning to identify whether a pair of photographs is of the same individual or not. The core of the approach is a similarity learning network that uses paired convolutional neural networks with a triplet loss function to summarize image pairs and decide whether they are from the same individual. Prior to the main matching step, two additional convolutional neural networks perform image segmentation, cropping the animal object within the image, and orientation prediction, deciding which side of the animal was photographed. We applied the approach to four species, with images of the same individual often spanning several years: systematic surveys of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus, 2008–2019) and harbor seals (Phoca vitulina, 2015–2019), a citizen science dataset of western leopard toads (Sclerophrys pantherina, unknown dates), and a publicly available repository of humpback whale images (Megaptera novaeangliae, unknown dates). For these species, our best‐performing models were able to identify whether a pair of images were from the same individual or different individuals in 95.8%, 94.6%, 88.2%, and 83.8% of the cases, respectively. We found that triplet loss functions outperformed binary cross‐entropy loss functions and that data augmentation and additional manual curation of training data provided small but consistent improvements in performance. These results demonstrate the potential of deep learning to replace or, more likely, support and facilitate manual individual identification efforts.

Abstract

IntroductionThe objective of this demand driven research is to co-design an intervention for upper-secondary students that addresses issues of consent and healthy relationships. In this paper, we (university researchers, student co-researchers, school staff), present the engagement framework that has been critical to the project's development and planned implementation.MethodsAn iterative co-design approach grounded in a participatory research approach is currently being adopted. Student co-researchers from three independent secondary schools on Whadjuk Nyungar Country in Boorloo/Perth, Western Australia, have been engaged as co-researchers in the design of the intervention. Supplementary quantitative and qualitative data from students enrolled at each school site is also being collated to further inform the intervention design. Student co-researchers will provide insights on the overarching design of the intervention including: the scope of key concepts they want to learn, interpretation of supplementary data, and the development of contextually relevant educative content.ResultsRetrospective and prospective components of the engagement framework are described and supported with applied examples where applicable. Preliminary results demonstrate the imperative of adopting iterative co-design, and the efficacy of our authentic engagement framework. A draft intervention has been formalized and will soon undergo piloting. The co-design process has already resulted in an intervention that differs from the initial program first conceptualized by university researchers.ConclusionImperative to our engagement framework is centering students as experts of their lived experience. It is anticipated that this engagement framework will provide insights around the feasibility, value, and necessity for authentic engagement of upper-secondary school students in the design of their consent and healthy relationship education.

Abstract

BackgroundData dashboards are published tools that present visualizations; they are increasingly used to display data about behavioral health, social determinants of health, and chronic and infectious disease risks to inform or support public health endeavors. Dashboards can be an evidence-based approach used by communities to influence decision-making in health care for specific populations. Despite widespread use, evidence on how to best design and use dashboards in the public health realm is limited. There is also a notable dearth of studies that examine and document the complexity and heterogeneity of dashboards in community settings. ObjectiveCommunity stakeholders engaged in the community response to the opioid overdose crisis could benefit from the use of data dashboards for decision-making. As part of the Communities That HEAL (CTH) intervention, community data dashboards were created for stakeholders to support decision-making. We assessed stakeholders’ perceptions of the usability and use of the CTH dashboards for decision-making. MethodsWe conducted a mixed methods assessment between June and July 2021 on the use of CTH dashboards. We administered the System Usability Scale (SUS) and conducted semistructured group interviews with users in 33 communities across 4 states of the United States. The SUS comprises 10 five-point Likert-scale questions measuring usability, each scored from 0 to 4. The interview guides were informed by the technology adoption model (TAM) and focused on perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, intention to use, and contextual factors. ResultsOverall, 62 users of the CTH dashboards completed the SUS and interviews. SUS scores (grand mean 73, SD 4.6) indicated that CTH dashboards were within the acceptable range for usability. From the qualitative interview data, we inductively created subthemes within the 4 dimensions of the TAM to contextualize stakeholders’ perceptions of the dashboard’s usefulness and ease of use, their intention to use, and contextual factors. These data also highlighted gaps in knowledge, design, and use, which could help focus efforts to improve the use and comprehension of dashboards by stakeholders. ConclusionsWe present a set of prioritized gaps identified by our national group and list a set of lessons learned for improved data dashboard design and use for community stakeholders. Findings from our novel application of both the SUS and TAM provide insights and highlight important gaps and lessons learned to inform the design of data dashboards for use by decision-making community stakeholders. Abstract

IL-23 is a cytokine produced by myeloid cells that drives the T helper 17 pathway and plays an essential role in the pathophysiology of plaque psoriasis. IL-23 activation initiates a cascade of cytokines subsequently inducing the expression of many psoriasis-related proteins. This study aimed to better understand the underlying mechanisms driving the differences between IL-23 and IL-17A blockade in patients with psoriasis and their implications for durability of clinical responses. Serum and/or skin biopsies were isolated from patients treated with guselkumab or secukinumab for evaluation of potential biomarkers of pharmacodynamic response to treatment. Guselkumab treatment led to significantly greater reductions of IL-17F and IL-22 serum levels than treatment with secukinumab at weeks 24 and 48, demonstrating sustained regulation of the IL-23/T helper 17 pathway. Analyses of proteomic and transcriptomic profiles of patient sera and skin biopsies demonstrated differential regulation of proteins involved in chemokine, TNF, and relevant immune signaling pathways to a greater degree with guselkumab than with secukinumab treatment. These data provide insights into the differences between the mechanisms and impact of IL-23 and IL-17A blockade in psoriasis, with implications for efficacy observations and treatment paradigms.
