We used numerical modeling to study the evolution of EUV-induced plasmas in argon and hydrogen. The results of simulations were compared to the electron densities measured by microwave cavity resonance spectroscopy. It was found that the measured electron densities can be used to derive the integral amount of plasma in the cavity. However, in some regimes, the impact of the setup geometry, EUV spectrum, and EUV induced secondary emission should be taken into account. The influence of these parameters on the generated plasma and the measured electron density is discussed.

The new generation of lithography tools use high energy EUV radiation which ionizes the present background gas due to photoionization. To predict and understand the long term impact on the highly delicate mirrors It is essential to characterize these kinds of EUV-induced plasmas. We measured the electron density evolution in argon gas during and just after irradiation by a short pulse of EUV light at 13.5 nm by applying microwave cavity resonance spectroscopy. Dependencies on EUV pulse energy and gas pressure have been explored over a range relevant for industrial applications. Our experimental results show that the maximum reached electron density depends linearly on pulse energy. A quadratic dependence - caused by photoionization and subsequent electron impact ionization by free electrons - is found from experiments where the gas pressure is varied. This is demonstrated by our theoretical estimates presented in this manuscript as well., Comment: submitted to J. Phys. D. 16 pages, 8 figures

Despite availability of various image sources for specific areas, a new disaster management system is likely to be implemented by using only one of them. Thus, its applicability and extensibility are severely limited. In addition, real-time update for the disaster area is one of the crucial functions for search and rescue activities. To meet the aforementioned requirements, in this paper, we propose a new spatial data infrastructure by defining the methodological scheme for the raster information. The proposed system has four respective layers to reduce the management cost as well as provide a flexible architecture. In each layer, various open source software or standard technologies are employed to perform the given tasks. The experimental results reveal that the proposed scheme accommodates the requirements for disaster risk management and meets the performance requirements in an efficient way.

8. Self-breaking in planar few-atom Au constrictions for nm-spaced electrodes

We present results on electromigrated Au nanojunctions broken near the conductance quantum $77.5 \mu$S. At room temperature we find that wires, initially narrowed by an actively-controlled electromigration technique down to a few conductance quanta, continue to narrow after removing the applied voltage. Separate electrodes form as mobile gold atoms continuously reconfigure the constriction. We find, from results obtained on over 300 samples, no evidence for gold cluster formation in junctions broken without an applied voltage, implying that gold clusters may be avoided by using this self-breaking technique., Comment: accepted in Applied physics letters

However, there are no studies on this effect in older adults with metabolic syndrome (MetS).Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of TC exercise on oxidative stress and inflammatory markers in older adults with MetS.Methods: A quasi-experimental study was carried out with a sample of 110 older sedentary volunteers with clinical diagnoses of MetS: (i) a control group, n = 50, of individuals who do not participate in physical exercise, of which 37 fulfilled the entire study protocol, and (ii) an experimental group, n = 60, of subjects enrolled in a TC exercise training program (eight-form easy), 5 days a week for 6 months, in sessions of 50 min, under the supervision of a qualified instructor, of which 48 fulfilled the entire study protocol. We measured in both groups (pre- and post-intervention) the following cardiovascular parameters: resting heart rate (RHR), diastolic and systolic blood pressure (DBP and SBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), RHR-SBP product, RHR-MAP product; glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c); oxidative stress markers (superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant status, thiobarbituric acid reacting substances, and oxidative stress score); and inflammation markers (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10).Results: A statistically significant decrease in HbA1c concentration was observed in the TC group compared with the control group (p < 0.05). This group also showed a statistically significant increase in TAS and a decrease in the oxidative stress score (p < 0.05). We did not observe changes in the cardiovascular parameters (RHR, DBP, SBP, MAP, RHR-SBP product, and RHR-MAP product) in the TC experimental group compared to the control group.Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the practice of TC exercise has an antioxidative and hypoglycemic effect in the elderly with MetS. People are infected with Leishmania donovani when the parasite is deposited in the dermis during the blood meal of the sand fly vector. Most infected people develop a subclinical latent infection, but some develop progressive visceral leishmaniasis. Malnutrition is a risk factor for the development of active VL. We previously demonstrated increased parasite dissemination from the skin to visceral organs in a murine model of malnutrition. Here we investigated the mechanism of early parasite dissemination. After delivery of L. donovani to the skin, we found enhanced capture of parasites by inflammatory monocytes and neutrophils in the skin of malnourished mice. However, parasite dissemination in malnourished mice was driven primarily by infected inflammatory monocytes, which showed increased CCR7 expression, greater intrinsic migratory capacity, and increased trafficking from skin to spleen. PGE2 production, which was increased at the site of skin infection, increased monocyte CCR7 expression and promoted CCR7-related monocyte-mediated early parasite dissemination in malnourished mice. Parasite dissemination in monocytes was reduced by inhibition of PGE2, knockdown or silencing of CCR7 in monocytes, and depletion of inflammatory monocytes through administration of diphtheria toxin to CSFR1-DTR transgenic mice that have monocyte-specific DT receptor expression. CCR7-driven trafficking of infected inflammatory monocytes through the lymph node was accompanied by increased expression of its ligands CCL19 and CCL21. These results show that the CCR7/PGE2 axis is responsible for the increased trafficking of L. donovani-infected inflammatory monocytes from the skin to the spleen in the malnourished host. Undernutrition and production of PGE2 are potential targets to reduce the risk of people developing VL. Nutritional interventions that target improved immune function and reduced PGE2 synthesis should be studied in people at risk of developing VL. Author summary: This study established that inflammatory monocytes contribute to the visceralization of L. donovani parasites in the malnourished host. We found that the prostaglandin E2 produced during the first 72 hours of infection amplified the parasite burden at the site of skin infection and induced a high expression of CCR7 receptor in inflammatory monocytes. CCR7-bearing inflammatory monocytes carried L. donovani parasites via enhanced migration from the skin infection site to the viscera of malnourished mice. This dissemination of Leishmania parasites was abrogated in CCR7 deficient inflammatory monocytes and in mice treated with a prostaglandin E synthase inhibitor. We conclude that PGE2 contributes to monocyte-mediated parasite dissemination through the expression of CCR7 and its ligands in malnourished mice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

La obesidad general y en niños es un problema de salud pública con claro aumento a nivel mundial y en Chile. En las edades pediátricas, aparte de sus consecuencias traumatológicas, metabólicas y psicológicas, ya tiene un impacto en el riesgo de enfermedades en las edades adultas. El concepto de síndrome metabólico está en uso hace algunos años en la edad adulta, para aunar factores de riesgo de llegar a desarrollar diabetes tipo II y enfermedad cardiovascular. En pediatría hay suficiente evidencia que son factores predictores de riesgo desde la edad escolar la mayoría de los componentes estudiados en adultos: aumento de circunferencia abdominal, de presión arterial sistólica y diastólica, de triglicéridos y disminución de colesterol HDL sérico. Están en estudio otros componentes del síndrome: resistencia insulínica, adiposidad intraabdominal, hiperuricemia, hiperleptinemia, grosor aumentado de íntimamedia arterial, signos sugerentes de hígado graso. Se justifica el estudio de estos factores en niños y adolescentes obesos y su manejo intensivo por un equipo profesional entrenado.

La bio-oxidación de minerales mejora la recuperación de metales valiosos y disminuye el impacto negativo causado por los subproductos de las operaciones mineras, pero las interacciones de los microorganismos involucrados son poco conocidas. Con el objeto de avanzar en el estudio de interacciones microbianas de bacterias acidófilas nativas en cultivos mixtos, en este trabajo se utilizó la siembra en medio sólido doble capa y el análisis de enzimas de restricción del ADN ribosomal amplificado (Ardrea) con las enzimas Eco72I, Eco24I, XcmI y BsaAI para caracterizar cuatro aislados tomados de minas de oro de Marmato, Colombia. Los aislados que oxidan hierro y azufre exhibieron patrones de restricción del gen ARNr 16S compatibles con los reportados para Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, aunque uno de ellos mostró una morfología de colonia que no ha sido descrita para esta especie; el aislado que oxida azufre mostró un patrón que coincide con el análisis teórico realizado sobre secuencias para Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans incluidas en bases de datos primarias. La técnica Ardrea permitió diferenciar entre At.ferrooxidans y At.thiooxidans, y verificar si la identidad de los aislados correspondía con sus características fisiológicas y la morfología de sus colonias.

Besides the orthopedic, metabolic and psychological consequences at the pediatric age group, obesity has an evident long term impact on the risk of disease later in life. The term metabolic syndrome (MS) has been used for adults in the past decades, for combined factors associated with the risk of developing diabetes type II or cardiovascular disease at later ages. There is evidence that most of the components of MS for adults are also applicable in children and adolescents: increased abdominal circumference, increased systolic and diastolic blood pressure, increased triglycerides and decreased cholesterol HDL. Complementary features can be: insulin resistance, fatty liver, increased intraabdominal adiposity, hyperuricemia, increased thickness of arterial intima-media, hyperleptinemia. The assessment of these factors is required for all obese children and adolescents and it must be managed by a well trained professional team.

Mineral bio-oxidation improves the extraction of valuable metals and also decreases the impact caused by mining waste; however, the interactions between the micro-organisms so involved are little known. Double-layer solid culture media techniques and amplified ribosomal DNA restriction enzyme analysis (Ardrea), using Eco72I, Eco24I, XcmI and BsaAI enzymes, were used for characterising four micro-organisms isolated from gold mines located in Marmato, Colombia. This work was aimed at better understanding of native acidophilic micro-organisms’ microbial interactions in mixed cultures. Iron and sulphur oxidising isolates revealed similar restriction patterns to those previously reported for Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans; however, one of them exhibited different colony morphology compared to previously reported morphology. The iron non-oxidising isolate presented a restriction pattern agreeing with theoretical analysis of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans database sequences. ARDREA proved to be a viable technique for differentiating between At. ferrooxidans and At. thiooxidans; in turn, it enabled checking isolates’ identity with their physiological traits and colony morphology.

Mineral bio-oxidation improves the extraction of valuable metals and also decreases the impact caused by mining waste; however, the interactions between the micro-organisms so involved are little known. Double-layer solid culture media techniques and amplified ribosomal DNA restriction enzyme analysis (Ardrea), using Eco72I, Eco24I, XcmI and BsaAI enzymes, were used for characterising four micro-organisms isolated from gold mines located in Marmato, Colombia. This work was aimed at better understanding of native acidophilic micro-organisms’ microbial interactions in mixed cultures. Iron and sulphur oxidising isolates revealed similar restriction patterns to those previously reported for Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans; however, one of them exhibited different colony morphology compared to previously reported morphology. The iron non-oxidising isolate presented a restriction pattern agreeing with theoretical analysis of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans database sequences. ARDREA proved to be a viable technique for differentiating between At. ferrooxidans and At. thiooxidans; in turn, it enabled checking isolates’ identity with their physiological traits and colony morphology. La bio-oxidación de minerales mejora la recuperación de metales valiosos y disminuye el impacto negativo causado por los subproductos de las operaciones mineras, pero las interacciones de los microorganismos involucrados son poco conocidas. Con el objeto de avanzar en el estudio de interacciones microbianas de bacterias acidófilas nativas en cultivos mixtos, en este trabajo se utilizó la siembra en medio sólido doble capa y el análisis de enzimas de restricción del ADN ribosomal amplificado (Ardrea) con las enzimas Eco72I, Eco24I, XcmI y BsaAI para caracterizar cuatro aislados tomados de minas de oro de Marmato, Colombia. Los aislados que oxidan hierro y azufre exhibieron patrones de restricción del gen ARNr 16S compatibles con los reportados para Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, aunque uno de ellos mostró una morfología de colonia que no ha sido descrita para esta especie; el aislado que oxida azufre mostró un patrón que coincide con el análisis teórico realizado sobre secuencias para Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans incluidas en bases de datos primarias. La técnica Ardrea permitió diferenciar entre At.ferrooxidans y At.thiooxidans, y verificar si la identidad de los aislados correspondía con sus características fisiológicas y la morfología de sus colonias.

Objective: To describe the level of knowledge regarding the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of maternal isoimmunisation among Gynaecology and Obstetrics specialists, members of ABP (Asociación Bogotana de Perinatología). Materials and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study. A questionnaire prepared by specialists in Maternal and Foetal Medicine (MFM) was administered between November 2012 and March 2013. Professionals practicing outside the national territory, those who had not practiced over the past ten years, and those who did not provide all the information required were excluded. The tool consisted of 18 questions organized in three domains: socio-demographic characteristics, information about clinical practice, and knowledge of the subject. A descriptive statistical analysis was used. Results: Of the 220 practitioners who were given the questionnaire, 127 (57.7%) completed the survey and were included in the analysis. The cutoff point for the indirect Coombs was correctly identified by 32% of the obstetricians and by 45% of the specialists in MFM. The role of middle cerebral artery velocimetry for the diagnosis of foetal anaemia was recognized by 43% and 62% of obstetricians and specialists in MFM, and 82% and 76%, respectively, would use it for the follow-up of foetuses with anaemia. Only 76% of obstetricians and 66% of MFM specialists recognized the indications for delivering the baby in cases of foetal anaemia, whereas 90% and 97%, respectively, identified the timing for cordocentesis and in utero transfusion. Finally, 37% of obstetricians and 48% of MFM specialists did not recognize the Queenan- Liley curve as an option in cases where there is no access to foetal Doppler. Conclusion: There is an important variability in the level of knowledge among obstetricians and MFM specialists regarding the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of pregnant women with isoimmunisation. Additional studies are required to characterize the variability in clinical practice regarding the diagnosis and treatment of maternal isoimmunisation in Colombia.

Introducción: Los niños gravemente enfermos presentan mayor riesgo de malnutrición, de complicaciones y de estadías más prolongadas. Objetivo: Evaluar el estado nutricional y el apoyo nutricional entregado a niños hospitalizados en una unidad de cuidados intermedios. Sujetos y método: Se estudiaron 123 niños, ingresados consecutivamente a un Hospital de Santiago. La evaluación nutricional se realizó al ingreso y al 5º día. La ingesta alimentaria se evaluó por pesaje de alimentos. Resultados: 46% de los niños presentó malnutrición por déficit, 10% déficit nutricional agudo, 11% sobrepeso u obesidad y 33 % estado nutricional normal. El 20% de los niños cubría sus requerimientos energéticos, de estos 33% se encontraba con alimentación enteral, 42% por vía oral y 21% mixta (oral más enteral). Entre los niños que cubrieron menos del 100% de sus requerimientos, 19% sólo recibían soluciones glucosadas vía intravenosa. La ingesta proteica promedio fue 1,1 ± 0,7 g/kg peso, lo que equivale a un P% de 8,9 ± 3,3. Conclusiones: Un porcentaje bajo de los niños ingresados a una unidad de cuidados intermedios cubren sus requerimientos energéticos (20%) y proteicos (32%). Los mejores aportes lo lograron aquellos niños con alimentación enteral o alimentación mixta Introduction: Children admitted to a Hospital due to severe illnesses have an increased risk of wasting, complications and of prolonged stays at the hospital. Objective: To evaluate the nutritional status and the nutritional support provided to children with severe non-critical illnesses during their stay at a pediatric hospital. Subjects and method: One hundred and twenty three children consecutively admitted to a Pediatric Department of a public hospital were followed up during their stay. A nutritional assessment was prospectively performed on admission and after 5 days. The nutrient intakes were evaluated by direct observation and weighing the foods administered and rejected by children. Results: Malnutrition was found in 46% of children, including 10% of wasting, 11% overweight and 33% with a normal nutritional status. Twenty percent of children covered their energy requirements with enteral feeding, 42% with oral feedings and 21% with oral plus enteral feeding. Among those who partially covered their energy requirements, 19% received only intravenous glucose solutions. Mean protein intake was 1.1 ± 0.7 g/Kg (P%= 8.9 ± 3,3). Conclusions: A low proportion of children hospitalized due to severe non-critical illnesses cover their energy and protein requirements. More adequate energy intakes were provided by enteral feedings alone or by oral and enteral feedings

Se da a conocer la presencia de Phoenix sylvestris (L.) Roxburg, cultivada como ornamental y naturalizada en ambientes antropizados de Mendoza, San Juan y otras provincias de Argentina. Se cree que fue introducida al país hace aproximadamente 100 años y se la cita por primera vez para la flora argentina. Se hibrida con Ph. canariensis Hort. ex Chabaud, también cultivada y naturalizada, lo que en ocasiones dificulta su determinación Phoenix sylvestris (L.) Roxburg, cultivated as ornamental and naturalized in anthropic environments of Mendoza, San Juan, and other provinces of Argentina, is presented herein. We think that this species was introduced nearly 100 years ago, and is cited for the first time for Argentina. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of stainless steel orthodontic brackets directly bonded to extracted human premolar teeth. Fifty teeth were randomly divided into five groups: (1) System One (chemically cured composite resin), (2) Light Bond (light-cured composite resin), (3) Vivaglass Cem (self-curing glass ionomer cement), (4) Fuji Ortho LC (light-cured glass ionomer cement) used after 37% orthophosphoric acid–etching of enamel (5) Fuji Ortho LC without orthophosphoric acid–etching. The brackets were placed on the buccal and lingual surfaces of each tooth, and the specimens were stored in distilled water (24 hours) at 37°C and thermocycled. Teeth were mounted on acrylic block frames, and brackets were debonded using an Instron machine. Shear bond strength values at fracture (Nw) were recorded. ANOVA and Student-Newman-Keuls multiple comparison tests were performed (P < .05). Bonding failure site was recorded by stereomicroscope and analyzed by Chi-square test, selected specimens of each group were observed by scanning electron microscope. System One attained the highest bond strength. Light Bond and Fuji Ortho LC, when using an acid-etching technique, obtained bond strengths that were within the range of estimated bond strength values for successful clinical bonding. El desarrollo de la conducta alimentaria es un proceso complejo en el que participan componentes fisiológicos de regulación de la ingesta alimentaria, del crecimiento y peso corporal; componentes psicológicos del niño, de los padres y de la familia y además componentes culturales y sociales. Son frecuentes sus alteraciones en los primeros años de vida, las que se pueden traducir en un retraso del crecimiento, aversiones alimentarias y dificultades secundarias en la convivencia familiar. El manejo de estas alteraciones debiera estar basado principalmente en una educación preventiva en los primeros dos años de vida a la madre, en la modificación conductual del ambiente familiar (madre, hijo, otros miembros de ella) y sólo secundariamente considerar el manejo con fármacos Development of eating behavior and associated skills during infancy is a complex process which involves the physiological regulation of intake; growth; body weight; psychological aspects of the child, parents, and family as a whole, and social and cultural influences. Alterations of eating behavior are commonly observed, and may be associated with failure to thrive, food aversions and difficulties in family life. Management of these alterations must be based on a preventive education to the mother during the infant's first 2 years of life, in behavioral induction of changes in family environment, and as a last resort, with the use of orexigenic medications
