This is now standard practice, with, for example, the implementation of the WMO (Social Support Act) or the Brede School (a network of provisions for children, parents and district with the school at its core), but Zuidersma noticed that this was still very much in its infancy fifteen years ago. She conducted research into local collaboration between care and educational institutions with a focus on Nursing and Care programmes. ‘What was already conceived in 1980 was only introduced from 1997 onwards. In my research I discovered that there was great call for collaboration but that very little was known about how this should take shape and which attitudes should be fostered to achieve a concrete result.’ Success factors Questionnaires and observations of dozens of collaborating organizations helped Zuidersma come up with a number of critical success factors. First, the institutions involved need to be aware that their partnership is not an organization in itself but a network with a specific goal. This actually requires the different layers at the partner organizations to interact: for example, the manager of a care institution speaking directly with a teacher at a school. Together with this multilayered aspect, Zuidersma introduces the term of reciprocity, in which not the status of the organization is the main focus but, for example, the interest of students or patients. Over the course of time the organizations should sense where this joint interest lies and none of them should dictate the agenda. They must be able to grow together. Many of us spend a large part of our lives working in work teams, and our experiences in these teams can significantly influence our well-being, health and happiness (e.g., Sonnentag, 1996). As a result, gaining a deeper understanding of the organization and functioning of work teams is not just interesting, but could also lead to such desirable results as increased well-being or improved team performance (e.g., Ostroff, 1992). One of the more important theories that both practitioners and scholars use for understanding the functioning of work teams is inter-dependence theory (e.g., Thibaut & Kelley, 1959). This thesis aims to further the understanding of interdependence in work teams by investigating the role of differences or asymmetries in dependence between team members. These asymmetries in dependence occur when a team member (A) is more dependent on another team member (B) to complete his or her task, than B is dependent on A (e.g., Kelley & Thibaut, 1978). This vital element of interdependence has been largely overlooked in research so far, and in this thesis I aim to fill this gap in the interdependence literature.

Multi-Agent Simulation (MAS) of organisations is a methodology that is adopted in this dissertation in order to study and understand human behaviour in organisations. The aim of the research is to design and implementat a cognitive and social multi-agent simulation model based on a selection of social and cognitive theories to fulfill the need for a complex cognitive and social model. The emphasis of this dissertation is the relationship between behaviour of individuals (micro-level) in an organization and the behaviour of the organization as a whole (macro-level).

The emphasis of this dissertation is the relationship between behaviour of individuals (micro-level) in an organization and the behaviour of the organization as a whole (macro-level).

Het doel van de auteurs is om in enkele stappen zo'n geintegreerd raamwerk te ontwikkelen. Hun model gaat uit van het niveau van de organisatie en het niveau van de individuele innovatieactiviteiten. De interactie tussen beide niveaus bepaalt de gewenste resultaten. Het artikel wordt afgesloten met drie nieuwe onderzoeks- terreinen.

A three-year longitudinal study of more than 150 self-managing work teams was carried out at Volvo Trucks Umea, Sweden. Data obtained by this study were used to test a model about the performance effects of team development, answering the following research questions: (1) how can the team developmental processes be described; (2) what are their effects on business performance as well as on quality of working life; and (3) what are the management structure’s inputs that generate team responsiveness? The study reveals three team-development processes, consistent over time, and each positively related to both indicators of business performance and quality of working life. A result-oriented approach is suggested, which supports teams and managers in making work teams more succesful, while focusing on inputs, processes as well as outputs.

Is there a tension between solidary behavior of employees and temporary employment relationships within modern organizations? Research into the effects of temporary employment relationships on employee behavior has rendered inconclusive results. Some researchers argue that temporary employees will show less solidarity because of their exchange relation with the organization while others emphasize that temporary workers may show more cooperation because they want to acquire a permanent employment status. Empirical research shows mixed findings as well. The question is addressed if these inconclusive findings can be accounted for by examining the social context of temporary and permanent employees. The effects of two features of the social context in which interactions between individual employees take place are examined: (1) temporal embeddedness, referring to the extent to which there are ongoing interactions between two actors and the likelihood that they will meet each other in the future; and (2) network embeddedness, referring to the extent to which a relationship between two actors is part of a larger network of relationships. The empirical studies are based on empirical data from four different sources: a survey among university employees, a survey among employees in different organizations, a vignette study, and a dataset consisting of coded ethnographic data. The analyses of the empirical data leads to three main conclusions. First, it is shown that solidary types of behavior are reciprocal; within organizations horizontal and vertical solidarity relationships are present. The second conclusion is that solidarity from employees is affected by the past and future of relationships and that temporal embeddedness is not just a matter of relationship length but depends crucially on the quality of the past between employees. The third conclusion is that solidary behavior of employees is positively affected by formal as well as informal network embeddedness, but that employees that are at the same time formally and informally dependent of others show less solidarity.

Many transition economies are characterised by a relatively rudimentary institutional framework. Weak legislative structures and the absence of effective market regulation and property right enforcement rules often prohibit mutually profitable business transactions and - more generally - restrict the chances for innovation and sustainable growth. Against this background, we analyse the extent to which more efficient governance mechanisms can contribute to a more favourable business environment. In doing so, we adopt a network perspective. We argue that both in developed market economies as well as in centrally planned economies much of economic exchange takes place in networks. However, the characteristics of these networks, in particular the concept of trust, can differ significantly. This implies that the real challenge of the process of economic transition is connected to building new economic exchange networks. In this paper, we discuss this argument and analyse how the current enlargement of the E.U. into Eastern Europe may favourably affect this process of institutional change in the accession countries.

The paper investigates organizational boundary spanning from the point of view of neighborhood relations. Neighborhood is defined with the closeness of organizations' resource utilization patterns. The key resource is the clientele's demand for organizational outputs (products, party programs, membership, etc.). Demand is characterized qualitatively by n taste descriptors that span an n-dimensional resource space. Organizational niche boundaries may take different forms and size. To avoid niche overlap over boundaries, organizations can configure in the resource space in different clusterings. Which are the densest arrangements that allow for the coexistence of maximal number of organizations? How can these coexisting neighborhoods build up? How do competition, new entry and the number of immediate neighbors change around the niche boundary with space dimension? The paper applies results of the sphere packing problem in n-dimensional geometry to answer these questions.
