1. Observation of the lowest energy gamma-ray in any superdeformed nucleus : 196Bi

Abstract

New results on the superdeformed $^{196}$Bi nucleus a re reported. We have observed with the EUROBALL IV $\gamma$-ray spectrometer array a superdeformed trans ition of 124 keV which is the lowest observed energy $\gamma$-ray in any superdeformed nucleus. We have de velopped microscopic cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations using the SLy4 effective force and a realistic surface p airing which strongly support the $K^\pi=2^-$($\pi$[651]1/2$\otimes \nu$[752]5/2) assignment of this su perdeformed band.

Abstract

We report the results of recent measurements of the spectroscopic quadrupole moments of high-spin isomers. For the K=35/2- five-quasiparticle isomer in 179W we measured Q_s=4.00(+0.83)(-1.06)eb. It corresponds to a smaller deformation compared to the ground states of the W isotopes and is in disagreement with the current theoretical predictions. We also measured the quadrupole moment of the I=11- isomer in 196Pb, Q_s=(-)3.41(66)eb. It has the same proton s(-2)1/2 h9/2 i13/2 configuration as the one suggested for the I=16- magnetic bandhead which allows to deduce the quadrupole moment of the 16- state as Q_s=-0.316(97)eb. Abstract

The level structure of 60140Nd80 has been established up to spin 48 by in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy by use of the Zr96(Ca48, 4n) reaction. High-fold γ-ray coincidences were measured with the EUROBALL spectrometer. Twelve new rotational bands have been discovered at high spins. They are interpreted as being formed in a deep triaxial minimum at 2 0.25 and γ 35°. Possible configurations are assigned to the observed bands on the basis of configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. © 2005 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The high-spin structure of 170Hf was investigated using the EUROBALL spectrometer. The previously known level scheme was extended in the low-spin region as well as to higher spins, and several new bands were discovered. In particular, two bands were identified which show the characteristics of triaxial superdeformation. One of these bands is strongly populated, and its excitation energy and spins are established. Configuration assignments are made to the normal-deformed bands based on comparisons of their properties with cranked shell model calculations. The results for the very high spin states provide important input for such calculations.

Abstract

We report the results of an experiment, realized with the EUROBALL IV spectrometer, in which superdeformed (SD) states have been populated in 197,198Pb nuclei. Crosstalk transitions between two signature partner SD bands in 197pb have been observed with an established M1 character, giving access to the magnetic properties of the v[752]5/2 intruder orbital. Six new SD bands have been identified in 197,198Pb. The results are interpreted in the framework of cranked Hartree-Fock calculations. A mixing between quasi-particle excitations and an octupole vibration is suggested in the two SD isotopes.

Abstract

High-spin states in Pb-196 have been populated in two different heavy-ion-induced reactions using thin and Au-backed targets, respectively. Gamma-ray coincidences were measured using the EUROBALL spectrometer array. Five new magnetic-rotational bands have been found. The previously known four bands have been extended and some of their levels have been reordered. With one exception, all the bands have been connected to lower-lying states and excitation energies, spins and parities have been determined. From the systematic properties of the bands and from comparison to tilted-axis cranking calculations, arguments for configuration assignments to the bands are derived. It is suggested that the bands are based on proton 11(-) and 8(+) particle states coupled to various neutron-hole excitations., QC 20100525

Abstract

The quadrupole moment of the 11- isomer in 196Pb has been measured by the level mixing spectroscopy method. This state has a pi (3s_1/2^-2 1h_9/2 1i_13/2)11- configuration which is involved in most of the shears band heads in the Pb region. The first directly measured value of Qs(11-) = (-) 3.41(66) b, coupled to the previously known quadrupole moment of the nu (1i_13/2 )12+ isomer allows us to estimate the quadrupole moment of the 16- shears band head as Qs(16-) = -0.32(10) b. The experimental values are compared to tilted axis cranking calculations, giving insight into the validity of the additivity approach to couple quadrupole moments and on the amount of deformation in the shears bands.
