Abstract Objectives: to evaluate static and dynamic respiratory muscle strength in children and adolescents with asthma. Methods: cross-sectional study, involving 80 children and adolescents, 40 with asthma and 40 healthy controls. Biological and clinical characteristics were analyzed. The analysis of the dynamic inspiratory muscle strength was obtained using the KH5 device of the POWERbreathe® line, while the static evaluation was performed using an analog manova-cuometer. Results: the mean obtained from the S-Index was higher in the control group compared to asthmatics (p = 0.026). There was no statistical difference between MIP values for asthmatics and predicted values (p = 0.056). The MEP results showed a significant difference between the mean of the cases and the predicted values (p = 0.000). There was a positive correlation between height and S-Index (p = 0.002 and r = 0.438). Conclusion: the present study demonstrated that the static inspiratory muscle strength (PImáx) of children and adolescents with asthma in comparison with the values predicted in the literature does not differ, however, when submitted to dynamic assessment (S-Index), it presents higher values in healthy controls. In addition, the S-Index showed a positive correlation with the child's height.

Introdução: Cirurgia bariátrica é um importante tratamento para a obesidade severa. Como ansiedade e estratégias de enfrentamento insatisfatórias estão associadas à obesidade, é importante avaliar o comportamento de pacientes candidatos e submetidos à cirurgia bariátrica, uma vez que esta pode ter impacto negativo sobre os resultados desse procedimento. Objetivo: avaliar ansiedade, depressão, estratégias de enfrentamento e qualidade de vida pré e pós-cirurgia bariátrica a partir dos dados da avaliação psicológica. Método: Estudo descritivo, longitudinal, com 118 pacientes atendidos no Ambulatório de Cirurgia Bariátrica de um hospital de ensino de alta complexidade, que realizaram o procedimento entre janeiro/2011 e janeiro/2015. Foram utilizados dados primários (avaliação psicológica pós-cirurgia) e secundários (relatório da avaliação psicológica pré-cirurgia). A avaliação psicológica incluiu: questionário socioeconômico, Escala Hospitalar de Ansiedade e de Depressão (HAD), Questionário de Qualidade de Vida SF-36 e Escala de Modos de Enfrentamento de Problemas (EMEP). The relative intensity of photonic modes in microcavity pillars with embedded self-assembled quantum dots is shown to be a sensitive function of quantum dot dipole orientation and position. This is deduced from a comparison of experiment and calculated intensities of light emission for many nominally identical pillars. We are able to obtain the overall degree of in-plane polarization of the quantum dot ensemble and also to obtain information on the degree of polarization along the growth axis.

The title complex, [Nb(C(7)H(12)N(3))(4)]PF(6), features chelating hpp anions (hpp is 1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-2H-pyrimido[1,2-a]pyrim-idine) that define a distorted dodeca-hedral coordination geometry based on an N(8) donor set. The Nb atom is situated on a site of symmetry , and the PF(6) (-) anion has crystallographic fourfold symmetry.

A series of five bicyclic guanidinate compounds containing various combinations of five- and six-membered rings and substituted alkyl groups have been shown by photoelectron spectroscopy to be easily ionized, with the one having two six-membered rings and four ethyl groups being the most easily ionized. The corresponding anions are capable of forming paddlewheel compounds having quadruply bonded Mo2(4+) units which are also easy to ionize. The most easily ionized compound is the ethyl-substituted Mo2(TEhpp)4 complex which has a broad first ionization band centered around 4.27 +/- 0.03 eV and an ionization onset at the very low energy of 3.93 +/- 0.03 eV. Even the compound with ligands containing two five-membered rings, which favors a long Mo-Mo separation because of the large ligand bite, has an ionization energy (4.78 eV) that is less than those of well-known organometallic reducing agents such as (eta5-C9Me7)2Co and (eta5-C5Me5)2Cr.

The title compound, [Ru2(C13H11N2)3(C2H3O2)(C2H3N)]BF4.0.5CH2Cl2 or [Ru2(mu-DPhF)3(mu-O2CMe)(MeCN)]BF4.0.5CH2Cl2, where DPhF is N,N'-diphenylformamidinate, crystallized as dark-blue block-shaped crystals. In the unit cell, the diruthenium cation lies on a general position, and the BF4- anions reside on two independent special positions with crystallographic twofold symmetry. Disorder was observed for one of the phenyl groups in the formamidinate ligand, the axial acetonitrile molecule and the interstitial dichloromethane molecule. The compound, which exhibits a long Ru-Ru bond of 2.4131 (5) A, is the first {Ru2}5+ formamidinate species that is both equatorially and axially functionalized so that it can be used as a precursor for polymeric paramagnetic supramolecular assemblies.

The title compound, [Ru2(C2H3O2)4(C15H16N2O2)2], lies on a crystallographic inversion center and exhibits an Ru-Ru bond length of 2.2847 (8) A. There are weak intramolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions between the N1,N2-di-p-anisylformamidine (HDAniF) ligands and the bridging acetate ligands. The molecule is one of the few examples of a crystallographically characterized axial bis-adduct of a {Ru2}4+ complex with two N-donor ligands.

We report a class of molecules with extremely low ionization enthalpies, one member of which has been determined to have a gas-phase ionization energy (onset, 3.51 electron volts) lower than that of the cesium atom (which has the lowest gas-phase ionization energy of the elements) or of any other known closed-shell molecule or neutral transient species reported. The molecules are dimetal complexes with the general formula M2(hpp)4 (where M is Cr, Mo, or W, and hpp is the anion of 1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-2H-pyrimido[1,2-a]pyrimidine), structurally characterized in the solid state, spectroscopically characterized in the gas phase, and modeled with theoretical computations. The low-energy ionization of each molecule corresponds to the removal of an electron from the delta bonding orbital of the quadruple metal-metal bond, and a strong interaction of this orbital with a filled orbital on the hpp ligands largely accounts for the low ionization energies.

Within the broad field called "supramolecular chemistry," there is a sector that is based on the use of metal atoms or ions as key elements in promoting the assembly and dictating the main structural features of the supramolecular products. Considerable success has been achieved by using MM bonded dimetal entities in this role. Metal-metal bonded cationic complexes of the [M(2)(DAniF)(n)(MeCN)(8-2n)]((4-n)+) type, where M = Mo or Rh and DAniF is an N,N'-di-p-anisylformamidinate anion, have been used as subunit precursors and then linked by various equatorial and axial bridging groups such as polycarboxylate anions, polypyridyls, and polynitriles. Characterization of the products by single-crystal x-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, NMR, and other spectroscopic techniques has revealed the presence of discrete tetranuclear (pairs or loops), hexanuclear (triangles), octanuclear (squares), and dodecanuclear (cages) species and one-, two-, or three-dimensional molecular nanotubes. These compounds display a rich electrochemical behavior that is affected by the nature of the linkers.
