She was conscious and stable when transferred to an emergency room. She had no sign of any major injuries except minor lacerations on her legs. Repeated evaluations including chest X-ray, ECG, and focused assessment with sonography for trauma did not reveal any abnormal findings. While waiting for discharge, she started having mild chest discomfort. Unexpectedly, the third echocardiogram showed mild pericardial effusion, and a CT with contrast showed aortic dissection in the ascending aorta and infra-left subclavian aortic dissection. She was immediately transferred by a helicopter to a tertiary trauma center for emergent repair surgery. Considering the site of dissections, progression of existing intrinsic intimal tear triggered by energy impact was suspected. However, traumatic causes could not be excluded. Extra caution and diligence should be exercised when examining elderly patients in blunt trauma.Keywords: aortic dissection, traffic accident, blunt trauma, elderly patients

Although spontaneous remission of visual function infrequently occurs, effective treatment for LHON remains unestablished. Transcorneal electrical stimulation has been shown to be efficacious in individuals with optic neuropathy. However, due to potential risk of corneal damage, repeated treatments are not permissible. In this exploratory study, we will be conducting skin electrical stimulation (SES) as an intervention for patients with LHON having 11778 missense mutation and investigate effectiveness and safety of SES.Methods: This is a single-arm, prospective, open-label exploratory trial focused on patients with LHON having 11778 missense mutation. Eleven patients will be enrolled and receive six consecutive SES once every 2 weeks up to 10 weeks. The safety of the SES will be monitored with specular microscopy, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, fundus examinations, and the observation of facial skin. The primary outcome measure will be the averaged l ogarithm of minimum angle resolution (logMAR) converted visual acuity 1 week after the last SES. Secondary outcome measures include changes, in logMAR at 4 and 8 weeks after the last SES, such as visual field indices measured using Humphrey visual field and microperimetry-3, the thickness of peripapillary retinal fiber and macular ganglion cell complex, multifocal visual evoked potentials, critical flicker frequency, and color vision.Discussion: The results of this proposed proof-of-concept feasibility trial will help plan and execute a larger definitive trial to test SES as an effective strategy for LHON and related optic neuropathies and help establish a beneficial treatment for LHON.Keywords: skin electrical stimulation, Leber hereditary optic neuropathy, logarithm of minimum angle resolution, single-arm study

3. Facial application of high-concentration carbon dioxide prevents epidermal impairment associated with environmental changes

We aimed to elucidate and profile the effects of CO2 application on local skin function. Patients and methods: A liquid formulation that included high-concentration CO2 or a control formulation was applied to the face of healthy men for 8 weeks. Quantitative analysis was performed during the dry winter months. Results: At the site where the control formulation was applied, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) increased while the moisturizing function (conductance) of facial skin decreased during the study period. However, at the CO2-treated site, increases in TEWL and decreases in conductance were significantly suppressed. In addition, the deterioration in scaliness and wrinkles parameters were suppressed by ≥40% at the CO2-treated site. There were no significant differences in skin surface pH or color properties between the control and test sites. Conclusion: This study suggests that the continuous application of a high-concentration CO2 formulation can affect skin physiology and has the potential to suppress reductions in the barrier and moisturizing functions of the stratum corneum accompanied by desquamation, which occurs during the winter. 4. Causal Discovery to Understand Hot Corrosion

Abstract

Gas turbine superalloys experience hot corrosion, driven by factors including corrosive deposit flux, temperature, gas composition, and component material. The full mechanism still needs clarification and research often focuses on laboratory work. As such, there is interest in causal discovery to confirm the significance of factors and identify potential missing causal relationships or co-dependencies between these factors. The causal discovery algorithm Fast Causal Inference (FCI) has been trialled on a small set of laboratory data, with the outputs evaluated for their significance to corrosion propagation, and compared to existing mechanistic understanding. FCI identified the salt deposition flux as the most influential corrosion variable for this limited dataset. However, HCl was the second most influential for pitting regions, compared to temperature for more uniformly corroding regions. Nine patients, comprising of five males and four females, showing large and myopic MHs, underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with inverted ILM flap technique assisted by brilliant blue G (BBG) staining. Ophthalmological findings including visual acuity and OCT were investigated based on medical records. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue section of an ILM-like membrane was submitted for immunohistochemistry with glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP).Results: ILM was clearly stained with BBG in eight patients, whereas the ILM in one case revealed no staining with BBG during PPV. Visual acuities improved to >0.2 LogMAR in six patients. The complete closure of MH following PPV with inverted ILM technique was eventually achieved in all patients determined by OCT imaging (100%). Only one patient showed recovery of ellipsoid zone and interdigitation zone following the surgery. Elongation of outer nuclear layer was noted in three eyes. The ILM-like membrane not stained with BBG histologically revealed an amorphous structure admixed with GFAP-positive mononuclear cell infiltration.Conclusion: PPV with inverted ILM flap technique achieved 100% closure rates with favorable configuration at an initial surgery in large MHs. Our histopathological data also suggest that even BBG staining-negative membrane may be a useful material for autologous transplantation to the hole. 7. Increased macular choroidal blood flow velocity during systemic corticosteroid therapy in a patient with acute macular neuroretinopathy

In this study, choroidal blood flow velocity was quantitatively evaluated using laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG) in a patient with AMN who received systemic corticosteroid therapy.Methods: Corticosteroids were systemically administrated across 4 months for an AMN patient. LSFG measurements were taken ten consecutive times before treatment and at 1 week and 1, 3, and 10 months after the onset of therapy. The square blur rate, a quantitative index of relative blood flow velocity, was calculated using LSFG in three regions: Square 1, the macular lesion with findings of severe multifocal electroretinography amplitude reduction, and Squares 2 and 3, funduscopically normal-appearing retinal areas with findings of moderate and mild multifocal electroretinography amplitude reduction, respectively.Results: The AMN lesion gradually decreased after treatment and improved results were detected on the Amsler chart, as well as on optical coherence tomography and scanning laser ophthalmoscopy. When the changing rates of the macular flow were compared with the mean square blur rate level before treatment (100%), 14.6%, 24.5%, 12.9%, and 16.3% increases were detected in Square 1 (macular lesion) at 1 week and 1, 3, and 10 months after treatment, respectively. Similarly, in Square 2 (normal-appearing area next to the lesion), 12.6%, 18.6%, 6.7%, and 8.3% increases were also noted at 1 week and 1, 3, and 10 months after treatment, respectively. In Square 3 (normal-appearing area apart from the lesion), 16.0%, 15.1%, 19.1%, and 3.8% increases were measured at 1 week and 1, 3, and 10 months after treatment, respectively.Conclusion: In a patient with AMN, choroidal blood flow velocity at the lesion site, which was examined with LSFG, sequentially increased during systemic corticosteroid therapy, together with improvement of visual function. Abstract

Methanol is a ubiquitous species commonly found in the molecular interstellar medium. It is also a crucial seed species for the building-up of the chemical complexity in star forming regions. Thus, understanding how its abundance evolves during the star formation process and whether it enriches the emerging planetary system is of paramount importance. We used new data from the ALMA Large Program FAUST (Fifty AU STudy of the chemistry in the disk/envelope system of Solar-like protostars) to study the methanol line emission towards the [BHB2007] 11 protobinary system (sources A and B), where a complex structure of filaments connecting the two sources with a larger circumbinary disk has been previously detected. Twelve methanol lines have been detected with upper energies in the range [45-537] K along with one 13CH3OH transition. The methanol emission is compact and encompasses both protostars, separated by only 28 au and presents three velocity components, not spatially resolved by our observations, associated with three different spatial regions, with two of them close to 11B and the third one associated with 11A. A non-LTE radiative transfer analysis of the methanol lines concludes that the gas is hot and dense and highly enriched in methanol with an abundance as high as 1e-5. Using previous continuum data, we show that dust opacity can potentially completely absorb the methanol line emission from the two binary objects. Although we cannot firmly exclude other possibilities, we suggest that the detected hot methanol is resulting from the shocked gas from the incoming filaments streaming towards [BHB2007] 11 A and B, respectively. Abstract

Quest for new states of matter near an ordered phase is a promising route for making modern physics forward. By probing thermal properties of a ferroelectric (FE) crystal Ba1-xSrxAl2O4, we have clarified that low-energy excitation of acoustic phonons is remarkably enhanced with critical behavior at the border of the FE phase. The phonon spectrum is significantly damped toward the FE phase boundary and transforms into glasslike phonon excitation which is reminiscent of a boson peak. This system thus links long-standing issues of amorphous solids and structural instability in crystals to pave the way to controlling lattice fluctuation as a new tuning parameter., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The study of hot corinos in Solar-like protostars has been so far mostly limited to the Class 0 phase, hampering our understanding of their origin and evolution. In addition, recent evidence suggests that planet formation starts already during Class I phase, which, therefore, represents a crucial step in the future planetary system chemical composition. Hence, the study of hot corinos in Class I protostars has become of paramount importance. Here we report the discovery of a hot corino towards the prototypical Class I protostar L1551 IRS5, obtained within the ALMA Large Program FAUST. We detected several lines from methanol and its isopotologues ($^{13}$CH$_{\rm 3}$OH and CH$_{\rm 2}$DOH), methyl formate and ethanol. Lines are bright toward the north component of the IRS5 binary system, and a possible second hot corino may be associated with the south component. The methanol lines non-LTE analysis constrains the gas temperature ($\sim$100 K), density ($\geq$1.5$\times$10$^{8}$ cm$^{-3}$), and emitting size ($\sim$10 au in radius). All CH$_{\rm 3}$OH and $^{13}$CH$_{\rm 3}$OH lines are optically thick, preventing a reliable measure of the deuteration. The methyl formate and ethanol relative abundances are compatible with those measured in Class 0 hot corinos. Abstract

Magnetic textures in the ferromagnetic phases of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ for 0.15 $< x <$ 0.30 have been investigated by Lorentz microscopy combined with small-angle electron diffraction experiments. Various types of magnetic textures characterized by stripe, plate-shaped, and cylindrical (magnetic bubble) domains were found. Two distinct types of magnetic stripe domains appeared in the orthorhombic structure with an inversion symmetry of La$_{0.825}$Sr$_{0.175}$MnO$_3$, depending significantly on magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Based on in-situ observations as functions of temperature and the strength of the external magnetic field, a magnetic field-temperature phase diagram was constructed, showing the stabilization of magnetic bubbles in the ferromagnetic phase of La$_{0.825}$Sr$_{0.175}$MnO$_3$.

Abstract

We report formation of magnetic textures in the ferromagnetic (FM) phase of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ for $x =$ 0.125; these textures are magnetic bubbles, magnetic stripe domains, and forced FM states. In situ Lorentz microscopy (LM) observations show that magnetic bubbles exist in the FM insulating phase accompanying the formation of the charge$/$orbital ordering (CO$/$OO). Furthermore, stable magnetic bubbles still exist in an intermediate temperature region between the CO$/$OO ($T_{CO} =$ 155 K) and FM ($T_c =$ 190 K) transition temperatures. These magnetic bubbles are believed to originate from the magnetocrystalline anisotropy and the dipole-dipole interaction in the FM phase. Based on in situ LM observations as a function of both temperature and the strength of the external magnetic field applied, a magnetic field-temperature phase diagram is constructed, exhibiting the stabilizing regions of the magnetic bubbles in the FM phase of La$_{0.875}$Sr$_{0.125}$MnO$_{3}$.

14. Observation of magnetic domain and bubble structures in magnetoelectric Sr$_3$Co$_2$Fe$_{24}$O$_{41}$

Abstract

The magnetic domain and bubble structures in the Z-type hexaferrite Sr$_3$Co$_2$Fe$_{24}$O$_{41}$ were investigated using Lorentz microscopy. This hexaferrite exhibits a room-temperature magnetoelectric effect that is attributed to its transverse conical spin structure (TC phase). Upon heating, the TC phase transforms into a ferrimagnetic phase with magnetic moments in the hexagonal $ab$ plane between 410 and 480 K (FM2 phase) and into another ferrimagnetic phase with moments parallel to the $c$ axis between 490 and 680 K (FM1 phase). Accordingly, in this study, the magnetic domain structures in Sr$_3$Co$_2$Fe$_{24}$O$_{41}$ were observed to change dramatically with temperature. In the TC phase, irregular fine magnetic domains were observed after cooling the specimen from the FM2 to TC phase. In the FM1 phase, striped magnetic domain walls with pairs of bright and dark contrast were formed parallel to the $c$ axis. Upon applying an external magnetic field, the striped magnetic domain walls transformed into magnetic bubbles. The topology of the magnetic bubbles was dependent on the angle between the external magnetic field ($H$) direction and the easy $c$ axis. Namely, magnetic bubbles with the topological number $N$ = 1 (type I) were created for $H//c$, whereas magnetic bubbles with $N$ = 0 (type II) were created when the magnetic field was tilted from the c axis by 5{\deg}. We attribute the high magnetocrystalline anisotropy of Sr$_3$Co$_2$Fe$_{24}$O$_{41}$ to the emergence of magnetic bubbles in the FM1 phase.

Abstract

We examined the formation mechanisms of magnetic bubbles in an M-type hexaferrite via Lorentz microscopy. When magnetic fields were perpendicularly applied to a thin sample of BaFe$_{12-x-0.05}$Sc$_x$Mg$_{0.05}$O$_{19}$ ($x = 1.6$), Bloch lines, which were identified as reversals of domain-wall chirality, appeared, and magnetic bubbles were formed when the magnetic stripes were pinched off at these Bloch lines. The number of Bloch lines increased with the amount of Sc in BaFe$_{12-x-0.05}$Sc$_x$Mg$_{0.05}$O$_{19}$ probably because of the reduction in magnetic anisotropy. A Lorentz microscopic observation revealed that Bloch lines with high magnetostatic energy may play an important role in the formation of magnetic bubbles.

Abstract

There has been growing interest in structural quantum phase transitions and quantum fluctuations of phonons in the research area of condensed matter physics. Here, we report the observation of glass-like features in the lattice heat capacity of a stuffed tridymite-type crystal, Ba1-xSrxAl2O4, a candidate compound of quantum paraelectrics. Substitutional chemical suppression of the ferroelectric phase transition temperature (TC) of Ba1-xSrxAl2O4 results in the disappearance of the TC at x=0.07. For the compositional window of x=0.2-0.5, the lattice heat capacity is enhanced below approximately 10 K and diverges from the T3-scaling law below 2.5 K. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments on single crystals reveal the weakly correlated disorder in the crystal structure that survives down to low temperature; this disorder is responsible for the observed excess heat capacity. 18. Influence of Instructor Personality on Student Evaluation of Teaching: A Comparison between English Majors and Non-English Majors

Abstract

160 non-English major students studying at a four-year university and 193 English major students studying at a career college of foreign language in Japan completed a questionnaire regarding instruction and instructor personality. The purpose of the current study was to examine whether the students' instructional and personality ratings predicted their general evaluation of course. This study also investigated whether the relations between instructional and personality ratings and the general course evaluation varied by major. A significant correlation was found between the instructional scale and the overall evaluation of the course regardless of students' majors: The more the students found the class interesting and was appropriately managed, the higher the overall evaluation. However, the findings indicate that while teacher's extroversion, thoughtfulness and neuroticism mattered to the non-English major group when evaluating the overall effectiveness of the class, teacher personality did not influence the English major group. The authors believe the findings of the present study could contribute to a better understanding of the nature of student evaluations that have always been a source of controversy, and sometimes discontent during their history.

Abstract

QCD topological susceptibility at high temperature, $\chi_t(T)$, provides an important input for the estimate of the axion abundance in the present Universe. While the model independent determination of $\chi_t(T)$ should be possible from the first principles using lattice QCD, existing methods fail at high temperature, since not only the probability that non-trivial topological sectors appear in the configuration generation process but also the local topological fluctuations get strongly suppressed. We propose a novel method to calculate the temperature dependence of topological susceptibility at high temperature. A feasibility test is performed on a small lattice in the quenched approximation, and the results are compared with the prediction of the dilute instanton gas approximation. It is found that the method works well especially at very high temperature and the result is consistent with the instanton calculus down to $T\sim 2\, T_c$ within the statistical uncertainty., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments were performed on the network compounds Ba1-xSrxAl2O4 at temperatures between 15 and 800 K. The ferroelectric phase of the parent BaAl2O4 is largely suppressed by the Sr-substitution and disappears for $x\geq0.1$. Structural refinements reveal that the isotropic atomic displacement parameter ($B_{\rm iso}$) in the bridging oxygen atom for $x\geq0.05$ is largely independent of temperature and retains an anomalously large value in the adjacent paraelectric phase even at the lowest temperature. The $B_{\rm iso}$ systematically increases as $x$ increases, exhibiting an especially large value for $x\geq0.5$. According to previous electron diffraction experiments for Ba1-xSrxAl2O4 with $x\geq0.1$, strong thermal diffuse scattering occurs at two reciprocal points relating to two distinct soft modes at the M- and K-points over a wide range of temperatures below 800 K [Y. Ishii et al., Sci. Rep. 6, 19154 (2016)]. Although the latter mode disappears at approximately 200 K, the former does not condense, at least down to 100 K. On the contrary, it still survives at low-temperature. Abstract

Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM) investigations of modulated states in a FeGe wedge and detailed calculations demonstrate that chiral twists arising near the surfaces of noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets (Meynell et al. Phys. Rev. B, 90, 014406 (2014)) provide a stabilization mechanism for skyrmion lattices and helicoids in cubic helimagnet nanolayers. The calculated magnetic phase diagram for free standing cubic helimagnet nanolayers shows that magnetization processes in these compounds fundamentally differ from those in bulk cubic helimagnets and are characterized by the first-order transitions between modulated phases and the formation of specific multidomain states. Abstract

Wines are complex mixtures of chemical compounds with broad and overlapping absorption and emission spectral features in the UV and visible spectral regions, making them challenging to study with conventional optical spectroscopic techniques. Multidimensional fluorescence spectroscopies correlate fluorescence spectra with other degrees of freedom, and have proven useful for studying complex molecular systems, offering a pathway for the analysis of wines utilising their inherent fluorescence. Here we employ steady-state excitation-emission matrix (EEM) and time-resolved fluorescence spectral measurements to investigate representative commercial white and red wine samples and a fluorescent 'model' wine base. Combining these multidimensional measurement methods provides information on the emission characteristics of the components that wines contain. This investigation illustrates the potential for multidimensional fluorescence techniques as diagnostic tools for the wine industry.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to present the Asia-Pacific consensus on long-term and sequential therapy for osteoporosis, offering evidence-based recommendations for the effective management of this chronic condition. The primary focus is on achieving optimal fracture prevention through a comprehensive, individualized approach. METHODS: A panel of experts convened to develop consensus statements by synthesizing the current literature and leveraging clinical expertise. The review encompassed long-term anti-osteoporosis medication goals, first-line treatments for individuals at very high fracture risk, and the strategic integration of anabolic and antiresorptive agents in sequential therapy approaches. RESULTS: The panelists reached a consensus on 12 statements. Key recommendations included advocating for anabolic agents as the first-line treatment for individuals at very high fracture risk and transitioning to antiresorptive agents following the completion of anabolic therapy. Anabolic therapy remains an option for individuals experiencing new fractures or persistent high fracture risk despite antiresorptive treatment. In cases of inadequate response, the consensus recommended considering a switch to more potent medications. The consensus also addressed the management of medication-related complications, proposing alternatives instead of discontinuation of treatment. CONCLUSIONS: This consensus provides a comprehensive, cost-effective strategy for fracture prevention with an emphasis on shared decision-making and the incorporation of country-specific case management systems, such as fracture liaison services. It serves as a valuable guide for healthcare professionals in the Asia-Pacific region, contributing to the ongoing evolution of osteoporosis management.

Abstract

We investigated the temperature dependence of the superlattice intensity and thermal diffuse scattering intensity of BaAl2O4, which has a network structure with corner-sharing AlO4 tetrahedra, via synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments. The temperature variation of the superlattice intensity revealed that the structural phase transition occurs at TC = 451.4 K from the P6322 parent crystal structure to the low-temperature superstructure with a cell volume of 2a x 2b x c. BaAl2O4 exhibits an unconventional structural phase transition driven by two competing soft modes, q1/2 ~ (1/2, 1/2, 0) and q1/3 ~ (1/3, 1/3, 0). When approaching the TC from above, the soft mode with q1/3 appeared first and was followed by the q1/2 soft mode. The thermal diffuse scattering intensities from both soft modes increased sharply at TC; therefore, both modes condensed simultaneously. The first principles calculation revealed that structural instabilities exist at the M- and K-points, at which the calculated imaginary frequencies are similar. The small energy difference of these structural instabilities generates the two competing soft modes and determines the eventual low-temperature crystal structure., Comment: 5 pages and 4 figures

Abstract

Projections of global mean temperature changes (ΔT) in the future are associated with intrinsic uncertainties. Much climate policy discourse has been guided by "current knowledge" of the ΔTs uncertainty, ignoring the likely future reductions of the uncertainty, because a mechanism for predicting these reductions is lacking. By using simulations of Global Climate Models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 ensemble as pseudo past and future observations, we estimate how fast and in what way the uncertainties of ΔT can decline when the current observation network of surface air temperature is maintained. At least in the world of pseudo observations under the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs), we can drastically reduce more than 50% of the ΔTs uncertainty in the 2040 s by 2029, and more than 60% of the ΔTs uncertainty in the 2090 s by 2049. Under the highest forcing scenario of RCPs, we can predict the true timing of passing the 2 °C (3 °C) warming threshold 20 (30) years in advance with errors less than 10 years. These results demonstrate potential for sequential decision-making strategies to take advantage of future progress in understanding of anthropogenic climate change.

Abstract

The presence of ferroelectricity in hexagonal (h-)InMnO3 has been highly under debate. The results of our comprehensive experiments of low-temperature (T) polarization, TEM and HAADF-STEM on well-controlled h-InMnO3 reveal that the ground state is ferroelectric with P6_3cm symmetry, but a non-ferroelectric P-3c1 state exists at high T, and can be quenched to room T. We also found that the ferroelectric P6_3cm state of h-InMnO3 exhibits the domain configuration of topological vortices, as has been observed in h-REMnO3 (RE=rare earths)., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We discovered "stripe" patterns of trimerization-ferroelectric domains in hexagonal REMnO3 (RE=Ho, ---, Lu) crystals (grown below ferroelectric transition temperatures (Tc), reaching up to 1435 oC), in contrast with the vortex patterns in YMnO3. These stripe patterns roughen with the appearance of numerous loop domains through thermal annealing just below Tc, but the stripe domain patterns turn to vortex-antivortex domain patterns through a freezing process when crystals cross Tc even though the phase transition appears not to be Kosterlitz-Thouless-type. The experimental systematics are compared with the results of our six-state clock model simulation and also the Kibble-Zurek Mechanism for trapped topological defects.

Abstract

We analyze the temporal variation of the diurnal anisotropy of sub-TeV cosmic ray intensity observed with the Matsushiro (Japan) underground muon detector over two full solar activity cycles in 1985-2008. The average sidereal amplitude over the entire period is 0.034+-0.003 %, which is roughly one third of the amplitude reported from AS and deep-underground muon experiments monitoring multi-TeV GCR intensity suggesting a significant attenuation of the anisotropy due to the solar modulation. We find, on the other hand, only weak correlations either with the solar activity- or magnetic-cycles. We examine the temporal variation of the "single-band valley depth" (SBVD) quoted by the Milagro experiment and, by contrast with recent Milagro reports, we find no steady increase in the Matsushiro observations in a 7-year period between 2000 and 2007. We suggest, therefore, that the steady increase of the SBVD reported by the Milagro experiment is not caused by the decreasing solar modulation in the declining phase of the 23rd solar activity cycle., Comment: submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

We analyze the sidereal daily variations observed between 1985 and 2006 at Matsushiro, Japan (MAT) and between 1993 and 2005 at Liapootah, Tasmania (LPT). These stations comprise the two hemisphere network (THN) of underground muon detectors in Japan and Australia. Yearly mean harmonic vectors at MAT and LPT are more or less stable without any significant change in phase and amplitude in correlation with either the solar activity- or magnetic-cycles. In this paper, therefore, we analyze the average anisotropy over the entire observation periods, i.e. 1985-2006 for MAT and 1993-2005 for LPT. We apply to the THN data a best-fitting analysis based on a model anisotropy in space identical to that adopted by Amenomori et al. (2007) for Tibet III data. The median energies of primary cosmic rays recorded are ~0.5 TeV for THN and ~5 TeV for the Tibet III experiment. It is shown that the intensity distribution of the best-fit anisotropy is quite similar to that derived from Tibet III data, regardless of the order of magnitude difference in energies of primary particles. This, together with the THN observations, confirms that the analysis by Amenomori et al. (2007) based on the Tibet III experiment in the northern hemisphere is not seriously biased. The best-fit amplitudes of the anisotropy, on the other hand, are only one third or less of those reported by the Tibet III experiment, indicating attenuation due to solar modulation. The rigidity dependence of the anisotropy amplitude in the sub-TeV region is consistent with the spectrum reported by Hall et al. (1999), smoothly extending to the Tibet III result in the multi-TeV region. Abstract

Prompted by recent results on Susy-U(N)-invariant quantum mechanics in the large N limit by Veneziano and Wosiek, we have examined the planar spectrum in the full Hilbert space of U(N)-invariant states built on the Fock vacuum by applying any U(N)-invariant combinations of creation-operators. We present results about 1) the supersymmetric model in the bosonic sector, 2) the standard quartic Hamiltonian. This latter is useful to check our techniques against the exact result of Brezin et al. The SuSy case is where Fock space methods prove to be the most efficient: it turns out that the problem is separable and the exact planar spectrum can be expressed in terms of the single-trace spectrum. In the case of the anharmonic oscillator, on the other hand, the Fock space analysis is quite cumbersome due to the presence of large off-diagonal O(N) terms coupling subspaces with different number of traces; these terms should be absorbed before taking the planar limit and recovering the known planar spectrum. We study implied default distributions for the iTraxx-CJ tranches and some popular probabilistic models, including the Gaussian copula model, Beta binomial distribution model and long-range Ising model. We discuss a general method to construct correlated binomial distributions by imposing several consistent relations on the joint probability function. We obtain self-consistency relations for the conditional correlations and conditional probabilities. The beta-binomial distribution is derived by a strong symmetric assumption on the conditional correlations. Our derivation clarifies the 'correlation' structure of the beta-binomial distribution. It is also possible to study the correlation structures of other probability distributions of exchangeable (homogeneous) correlated Bernoulli random variables. Abstract

This econophysics work studies the long-range Ising model of a finite system with $N$ spins and the exchange interaction $\frac{J}{N}$ and the external field $H$ as a modely for homogeneous credit portfolio of assets with default probability $P_{d}$ and default correlation $\rho_{d}$. Based on the discussion on the $(J,H)$ phase diagram, we develop a perturbative calculation method for the model and obtain explicit expressions for $P_{d},\rho_{d}$ and the normalization factor $Z$ in terms of the model parameters $N$ and $J,H$. The effect of the default correlation $\rho_{d}$ on the probabilities $P(N_{d},\rho_{d})$ for $N_{d}$ defaults and on the cumulative distribution function $D(i,\rho_{d})$ are discussed. The latter means the average loss rate of the``tranche'' (layered structure) of the securities (e.g. CDO), which are synthesized from a pool of many assets. We show that the expected loss rate of the subordinated tranche decreases with $\rho_{d}$ and that of the senior tranche increases linearly, which are important in their pricing and ratings., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

This paper generalizes Moody's correlated binomial default distribution for homogeneous (exchangeable) credit portfolio, which is introduced by Witt, to the case of inhomogeneous portfolios. As inhomogeneous portfolios, we consider two cases. In the first case, we treat a portfolio whose assets have uniform default correlation and non-uniform default probabilities. We obtain the default probability distribution and study the effect of the inhomogeneity on it. The second case corresponds to a portfolio with inhomogeneous default correlation. Assets are categorized in several different sectors and the inter-sector and intra-sector correlations are not the same. We construct the joint default probabilities and obtain the default probability distribution. We show that as the number of assets in each sector decreases, inter-sector correlation becomes more important than intra-sector correlation. We study the maximum values of the inter-sector default correlation. Our generalization method can be applied to any correlated binomial default distribution model which has explicit relations to the conditional default probabilities or conditional default correlations, e.g. Credit Risk${}^{+}$, implied default distributions. Abstract

We study the folding of the regular two-dimensional triangular lattice embedded in the regular three-dimensional Face Centered Cubic lattice, in the presence of quenched random spontaneous curvature. We consider two types of quenched randomness: (1) a ``physical'' randomness arising from a prior random folding of the lattice, creating a prefered spontaneous curvature on the bonds; (2) a simple randomness where the spontaneous curvature is chosen at random independently on each bond. We study the folding transitions of the two models within the hexagon approximation of the Cluster Variation Method. Depending on the type of randomness, the system shows different behaviors. We study the problem of folding of the regular triangular lattice in the presence of a quenched random bending rigidity + or - K and a magnetic field h (conjugate to the local normal vectors to the triangles). The randomness in the bending energy can be understood as arising from a prior marking of the lattice with quenched creases on which folds are favored. Abstract

type:Article, The effects of CO_2 enrichment and 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-based fertilizer application on cut flower production of Alstroemeria 'Avalange' were investigated. Seedlings were potted in 45-cm diameter polyethylene pots in September 2017. Four treatments were applied: general liquid fertilizer applied regularly (control group); ALA-based fertilizer (ALA group); CO_2 enrichment (CO_2 group); and ALA-based fertilizer combined with CO_2 enrichment (ALA+CO_2 group). In the first year, the experiment was conducted in a greenhouse until April 2018 and the CO_2 concentration in the CO_2 and ALA+CO_2 groups was increased to a maximum of 800 µmol mol^<‑1> for 5 h of the light period. The number of cut flowers and the SPAD value of leaves in the ALA+CO_2 group were significantly higher than those in the control group. There were no significant differences in cut flower length, cut flower weight, stem diameter, the number of peduncles and the number of florets among the treatments. In the second year, the experiment was conducted in a phytotron from November, 2018 to March, 2019 and the CO_2 concentration in the CO_2 and ALA+CO_2 groups was increased to 900 µmol mol^<‑1> for 7 h. The number of cut flowers in the ALA+CO_2 group was significantly higher than those in the control and CO_2 groups. Stem diameter in the ALA, CO_2 and ALA+CO_2 groups was thicker than that of the control group. There were no significant differences in cut flower length, cut flower weight, the number of peduncles and the number of florets among the treatments. The number of shoots in the CO_2 group was significantly greater than those in the control and ALA groups. These findings demonstrate that ALA-based fertilizer application under CO_2 enrichment conditions increases Alstroemeria cut flower numbers in low light conditions during winter.
