These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km2 resolution for 0–5 and 5–15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km2 p ixels ( summarized f rom 8 519 u nique t emperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (−0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. The area covered by boreal forests accounts for ~16% of the global and 22% of the Northern Hemisphere landmass. Changes in the productivity and functioning of this circumpolar biome not only have strong effects on species composition and diversity at regional to larger scales, but also on the Earth's carbon cycle. Although temporal inconsistency in the response of tree growth to temperature has been reported from some locations at the higher northern latitudes, a systematic dendroecological network assessment is still missing for most of the boreal zone. Here, we analyze the geographical patterns of changes in summer temperature and precipitation across northern Eurasia >60 °N since 1951 AD, as well as the growth trends and climate responses of 445 Pinus, Larix and Picea ring width chronologies in the same area and period. In contrast to widespread summer warming, fluctuations in precipitation and tree growth are spatially more diverse and overall less distinct. Although the influence of summer temperature on ring formation is increasing with latitude and distinct moisture effects are restricted to a few southern locations, growth sensitivity to June–July temperature variability is only significant at 16.6% of all sites (p ≤ 0.01). By revealing complex climate constraints on the productivity of Eurasia's northern forests, our results question the a priori suitability of boreal tree-ring width chronologies for reconstructing summer temperatures. На северо-восточном (СВ) и юго-западном (ЮЗ) склонах массива Иремель (Южный Урал, 54 30 -34 с.ш. 58 49 -54 в.д.) в экотоне верхней границы древесной растительности (1255- 1365 м над ур. м.) заложены 34 пробные площади, на которых собраны соответственно 540 и 250 образцов древесины ели сибирской (Picea obovata Ledeb.) для изучения и датировки морозобойных повреждений в годичных кольцах. На этих склонах выявлены различия в возрасте деревьев, когда прекращается формирование морозобойных повреждений (возраст их чувствительности к заморозкам), частота и синхронность формирования повреждений, а также положения и интенсивности повреждений в течение XX в. Показано, что на СВ склоне заморозками повреждаются более старые деревья (до 100 лет) по сравнению с деревьями, произрастающими на ЮЗ склоне (до 50-70 лет). На обоих склонах повреждения приурочены в основном к первой половине зоны ранней древесины, вызваны поздними весенними заморозками в результате вторжения холодных воздушных масс. Выявлены 12 лет, когда повреждения были найдены на обоих склонах и в пределах всего экотона (1927, 1943, 1952, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1970, 1982, 1995 и 1999 гг.). Повышенное количество повреждений в поздней древесине в нижней части экотона на СВ склоне обусловлено, вероятно, адвективно-радиационным выхолаживанием поверхности деревьев во второй половине вегетационного периода. Причины несинхронного образования морозобойных повреждений на склонах разной экспозиции требуют дополнительных микро- и мезоклиматических исследований. The analysis of extreme weather events provides an opportunity to study the microclimate characteristics on different slope aspects of the mountains. About 540 samples of wood of Siberian spruce (Picea obovata Ledeb.) on the north-eastern faced slope and 250 samples on south-western faced slope from 34 study plots on three altitude levels in the upper tree line ecotone of the Iremel massif (Southern Urals, 54 30 -34 N 58 49 -54 E) were collected with the purpose to investigate and date frost damages in tree rings. Differences in tree age when frost damage formation reduces up to 95% (age of their sensibility to frost), as well as in the frequency and synchronism of the frost damage formation, their position in the limit of annual ring and the intensity of damage to trees during the XXth century were revealed. The older trees (till 100 years old) were damaged more often by frost on the north-eastern slope aspect than in the south-west facing one (till 50-70 years old). Frost damages coincide mainly with the first half of the earlywood on both slopes, by reason of late spring frosts. During the XXth centuries 12 years with frost damages of first half of early wood were revealed on both slopes and all altitudinal levels with tree line ecotone (1927, 1943, 1952, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1970, 1982, 1995 and 1999). Synchronicity and mass injuries formation in the first half of the earlywood on both slopes along the upper tree line ecotone are probably caused by the advection of cold air masses. Increasing of the frost damage amount in the latewood at the lower level of the upper tree line ecotone on the north-eastern slope is probably due to advective-radiation frost of tree surfaces in the second half of the growth season, because of night cooling, and a runoff of cold air mass from the upper parts of the slopes. The reasons of revealed asynchronal formation of frost damage require further investigation of annual, monthly and daily temperatures, annual and monthly precipitations and dates of the growth period start.
