Variational autoencoder (VAE) is one of the most common techniques in the field of medical image generation, where this architecture has shown advanced researchers in recent years and has developed into various architectures. VAE has advantages including improving datasets by adding samples in smaller datasets and in datasets with imbalanced classes, and this is how data augmentation works. This paper provides a comprehensive review of studies on VAE in medical imaging, with a special focus on their ability to create synthetic images close to real data so that they can be used for data augmentation. This study reviews important architectures and methods used to develop VAEs for medical images and provides a comparison with other generative models such as GANs on issues such as image quality, and low diversity of generated samples. Research in vision and language has made considerable progress thanks to benchmarks such as COCO. COCO captions focused on unambiguous facts in English; ArtEmis introduced subjective emotions and ArtELingo introduced some multilinguality (Chinese and Arabic). However we believe there should be more multilinguality. Hence, we present ArtELingo-28, a vision-language benchmark that spans $\textbf{28}$ languages and encompasses approximately $\textbf{200,000}$ annotations ($\textbf{140}$ annotations per image). Traditionally, vision research focused on unambiguous class labels, whereas ArtELingo-28 emphasizes diversity of opinions over languages and cultures. The challenge is to build machine learning systems that assign emotional captions to images. Baseline results will be presented for three novel conditions: Zero-Shot, Few-Shot and One-vs-All Zero-Shot. We find that cross-lingual transfer is more successful for culturally-related languages. In the face of increasing demand for zero-touch networks to automate network management and operations, two pivotal concepts have emerged: "Learn to Slice" (L2S) and "Slice to Learn" (S2L). L2S involves leveraging Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to optimize network slicing for general services, while S2L centers on tailoring network slices to meet the specific needs of various AI services. The complexity of optimizing and automating S2L surpasses that of L2S due to intricate AI services' requirements, such as handling uncontrollable parameters, learning in adversarial conditions, and achieving long-term performance goals. This paper aims to automate and optimize S2L by integrating the two concepts of L2S and S2L by using an intelligent slicing agent to solve S2L. Indeed, we choose two candidate slicing agents, namely the Exploration and Exploitation (EXP3) and Deep Q-Network (DQN) from the Online Convex Optimization (OCO) and Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) frameworks, and compare them. Large language models (LLMs) are widely used but raise ethical concerns due to embedded social biases. This study examines LLM biases against Arabs versus Westerners across eight domains, including women's rights, terrorism, and anti-Semitism and assesses model resistance to perpetuating these biases. To this end, we create two datasets: one to evaluate LLM bias toward Arabs versus Westerners and another to test model safety against prompts that exaggerate negative traits ("jailbreaks"). We evaluate six LLMs -- GPT-4, GPT-4o, LlaMA 3.1 (8B & 405B), Mistral 7B, and Claude 3.5 Sonnet. We find 79% of cases displaying negative biases toward Arabs, with LlaMA 3.1-405B being the most biased. Our jailbreak tests reveal GPT-4o as the most vulnerable, despite being an optimized version, followed by LlaMA 3.1-8B and Mistral 7B. All LLMs except Claude exhibit attack success rates above 87% in three categories. We also find Claude 3.5 Sonnet the safest, but it still displays biases in seven of eight categories. Despite being an optimized version of GPT4, We find GPT-4o to be more prone to biases and jailbreaks, suggesting optimization flaws. Our findings underscore the pressing need for more robust bias mitigation strategies and strengthened security measures in LLMs.

Distracted driving is a critical safety issue that leads to numerous fatalities and injuries worldwide. This study addresses the urgent need for efficient and real-time machine learning models to detect distracted driving behaviors. Leveraging the Pretrained YOLOv8 (P-YOLOv8) model, a real-time object detection system is introduced, optimized for both speed and accuracy. This approach addresses the computational constraints and latency limitations commonly associated with conventional detection models. The study demonstrates P-YOLOv8 versatility in both object detection and image classification tasks using the Distracted Driver Detection dataset from State Farm, which includes 22,424 images across ten behavior categories. Our research explores the application of P-YOLOv8 for image classification, evaluating its performance compared to deep learning models such as VGG16, VGG19, and ResNet. Some traditional models often struggle with low accuracy, while others achieve high accuracy but come with high computational costs and slow detection speeds, making them unsuitable for real-time applications. P-YOLOv8 addresses these issues by achieving competitive accuracy with significant computational cost and efficiency advantages. In particular, P-YOLOv8 generates a lightweight model with a size of only 2.84 MB and a lower number of parameters, totaling 1,451,098, due to its innovative architecture. It achieves a high accuracy of 99.46 percent with this small model size, opening new directions for deployment on inexpensive and small embedded devices using Tiny Machine Learning (TinyML). The experimental results show robust performance, making P-YOLOv8 a cost-effective solution for real-time deployment. This study provides a detailed analysis of P-YOLOv8's architecture, training, and performance benchmarks, highlighting its potential for real-time use in detecting distracted driving.

Thanks to the high potential for profit, trading has become increasingly attractive to investors as the cryptocurrency and stock markets rapidly expand. However, because financial markets are intricate and dynamic, accurately predicting prices remains a significant challenge. The volatile nature of the cryptocurrency market makes it even harder for traders and investors to make decisions. This study presents a machine learning model based on classification to forecast the direction of the cryptocurrency market, i.e., whether prices will increase or decrease. The model is trained using historical data and important technical indicators such as the Moving Average Convergence Divergence, the Relative Strength Index, and Bollinger Bands. We illustrate our approach with an empirical study of the closing price of Bitcoin. Several simulations, including a confusion matrix and Receiver Operating Characteristic curve, are used to assess the model's performance, and the results show a buy/sell signal accuracy of over 92%. In spite of the recent progress in speech processing, the majority of world languages and dialects remain uncovered. This situation only furthers an already wide technological divide, thereby hindering technological and socioeconomic inclusion. This challenge is largely due to the absence of datasets that can empower diverse speech systems. In this paper, we seek to mitigate this obstacle for a number of Arabic dialects by presenting Casablanca, a large-scale community-driven effort to collect and transcribe a multi-dialectal Arabic dataset. The dataset covers eight dialects: Algerian, Egyptian, Emirati, Jordanian, Mauritanian, Moroccan, Palestinian, and Yemeni, and includes annotations for transcription, gender, dialect, and code-switching. We present a novel autonomous robot navigation algorithm for outdoor environments that is capable of handling diverse terrain traversability conditions. Our approach, VLM-GroNav, uses vision-language models (VLMs) and integrates them with physical grounding that is used to assess intrinsic terrain properties such as deformability and slipperiness. We use proprioceptive-based sensing, which provides direct measurements of these physical properties, and enhances the overall semantic understanding of the terrains. Our formulation uses in-context learning to ground the VLM's semantic understanding with proprioceptive data to allow dynamic updates of traversability estimates based on the robot's real-time physical interactions with the environment. We use the updated traversability estimations to inform both the local and global planners for real-time trajectory replanning. We validate our method on a legged robot (Ghost Vision 60) and a wheeled robot (Clearpath Husky), in diverse real-world outdoor environments with different deformable and slippery terrains. In practice, we observe significant improvements over state-of-the-art methods by up to 50% increase in navigation success rate.

We present CROSS-GAiT, a novel algorithm for quadruped robots that uses Cross Attention to fuse terrain representations derived from visual and time-series inputs, including linear accelerations, angular velocities, and joint efforts. These fused representations are used to adjust the robot's step height and hip splay, enabling adaptive gaits that respond dynamically to varying terrain conditions. We generate these terrain representations by processing visual inputs through a masked Vision Transformer (ViT) encoder and time-series data through a dilated causal convolutional encoder. The cross-attention mechanism then selects and integrates the most relevant features from each modality, combining terrain characteristics with robot dynamics for better-informed gait adjustments. CROSS-GAiT uses the combined representation to dynamically adjust gait parameters in response to varying and unpredictable terrains. We train CROSS-GAiT on data from diverse terrains, including asphalt, concrete, brick pavements, grass, dense vegetation, pebbles, gravel, and sand. Our algorithm generalizes well and adapts to unseen environmental conditions, enhancing real-time navigation performance. CROSS-GAiT was implemented on a Ghost Robotics Vision 60 robot and extensively tested in complex terrains with high vegetation density, uneven/unstable surfaces, sand banks, deformable substrates, etc. We observe at least a 7.04% reduction in IMU energy density and a 27.3% reduction in total joint effort, which directly correlates with increased stability and reduced energy usage when compared to state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, CROSS-GAiT demonstrates at least a 64.5% increase in success rate and a 4.91% reduction in time to reach the goal in four complex scenarios. Additionally, the learned representations perform 4.48% better than the state-of-the-art on a terrain classification task.

We present BehAV, a novel approach for autonomous robot navigation in outdoor scenes guided by human instructions and leveraging Vision Language Models (VLMs). Our method interprets human commands using a Large Language Model (LLM) and categorizes the instructions into navigation and behavioral guidelines. Navigation guidelines consist of directional commands (e.g., "move forward until") and associated landmarks (e.g., "the building with blue windows"), while behavioral guidelines encompass regulatory actions (e.g., "stay on") and their corresponding objects (e.g., "pavements"). We use VLMs for their zero-shot scene understanding capabilities to estimate landmark locations from RGB images for robot navigation. Further, we introduce a novel scene representation that utilizes VLMs to ground behavioral rules into a behavioral cost map. This cost map encodes the presence of behavioral objects within the scene and assigns costs based on their regulatory actions. The behavioral cost map is integrated with a LiDAR-based occupancy map for navigation. To navigate outdoor scenes while adhering to the instructed behaviors, we present an unconstrained Model Predictive Control (MPC)-based planner that prioritizes both reaching landmarks and following behavioral guidelines. We evaluate the performance of BehAV on a quadruped robot across diverse real-world scenarios, demonstrating a 22.49% improvement in alignment with human-teleoperated actions, as measured by Frechet distance, and achieving a 40% higher navigation success rate compared to state-of-the-art methods.

In a classification task, counterfactual explanations provide the minimum change needed for an input to be classified into a favorable class. We consider the problem of privately retrieving the exact closest counterfactual from a database of accepted samples while enforcing that certain features of the input sample cannot be changed, i.e., they are \emph{immutable}. An applicant (user) whose feature vector is rejected by a machine learning model wants to retrieve the sample closest to them in the database without altering a private subset of their features, which constitutes the immutable set. While doing this, the user should keep their feature vector, immutable set and the resulting counterfactual index information-theoretically private from the institution. We refer to this as immutable private counterfactual retrieval (I-PCR) problem which generalizes PCR to a more practical setting. In this paper, we propose two I-PCR schemes by leveraging techniques from private information retrieval (PIR) and characterize their communication costs. Further, we quantify the information that the user learns about the database and compare it for the proposed schemes.

Modern cryptography, such as Rivest Shamir Adleman (RSA) and Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA), has been designed by humans based on our understanding of cryptographic methods. Neural Network (NN) based cryptography is being investigated due to its ability to learn and implement random cryptographic schemes that may be harder to decipher than human-designed algorithms. NN based cryptography may create a new cryptographic scheme that is NN specific and that changes every time the NN is (re)trained. This is attractive since it would require an adversary to restart its process(es) to learn or break the cryptographic scheme every time the NN is (re)trained. Current challenges facing NN-based encryption include additional communication overhead due to encoding to correct bit errors, quantizing the continuous-valued output of the NN, and enabling One-Time-Pad encryption. With this in mind, the Random Adversarial Data Obfuscation Model (RANDOM) Adversarial Neural Cryptography (ANC) network is introduced. RANDOM is comprised of three new NN layers: the (i) projection layer, (ii) inverse projection layer, and (iii) dot-product layer. This results in an ANC network that (i) is computationally efficient, (ii) ensures the encrypted message is unique to the encryption key, and (iii) does not induce any communication overhead. Large neural networks achieve remarkable performance, but their size hinders deployment on resource-constrained devices. While various compression techniques exist, parameter sharing remains relatively unexplored. This paper introduces Fine-grained Parameter Sharing (FiPS), a novel algorithm that leverages the relationship between parameter sharing, tensor decomposition, and sparsity to efficiently compress large vision transformer models. FiPS employs a shared base and sparse factors to represent shared neurons across multi-layer perception (MLP) modules. Shared parameterization is initialized via Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) and optimized by minimizing block-wise reconstruction error. Experiments demonstrate that FiPS compresses DeiT-B and Swin-L MLPs to 25-40% of their original parameter count while maintaining accuracy within 1 percentage point of the original models.

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have shown great promise in tasks like node and graph classification, but they often struggle to generalize, particularly to unseen or out-of-distribution (OOD) data. These challenges are exacerbated when training data is limited in size or diversity. To address these issues, we introduce a theoretical framework using Rademacher complexity to compute a regret bound on the generalization error and then characterize the effect of data augmentation. This framework informs the design of GMM-GDA, an efficient graph data augmentation (GDA) algorithm leveraging the capability of Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) to approximate any distribution. Our approach not only outperforms existing augmentation techniques in terms of generalization but also offers improved time complexity, making it highly suitable for real-world applications.

As Large-Scale Cloud Systems (LCS) become increasingly complex, effective anomaly detection is critical for ensuring system reliability and performance. However, there is a shortage of large-scale, real-world datasets available for benchmarking anomaly detection methods. To address this gap, we introduce a new high-dimensional dataset from IBM Cloud, collected over 4.5 months from the IBM Cloud Console. This dataset comprises 39,365 rows and 117,448 columns of telemetry data. Additionally, we demonstrate the application of machine learning models for anomaly detection and discuss the key challenges faced in this process. This study and the accompanying dataset provide a resource for researchers and practitioners in cloud system monitoring. It facilitates more efficient testing of anomaly detection methods in real-world data, helping to advance the development of robust solutions to maintain the health and performance of large-scale cloud infrastructures.

In recent years, Large Language Models (LLMs) through Transformer structures have dominated many machine learning tasks, especially text processing. However, these models require massive amounts of data for training and induce high resource requirements, particularly in terms of the large number of Floating Point Operations (FLOPs) and the high amounts of memory needed. To fine-tune such a model in a parameter-efficient way, techniques like Adapter or LoRA have been developed. However, we observe that the application of LoRA, when used in federated learning (FL), while still being parameter-efficient, is memory and FLOP inefficient. Based on that observation, we develop a novel layer finetuning scheme that allows devices in cross-device FL to make use of pretrained neural networks (NNs) while adhering to given resource constraints. We show that our presented scheme outperforms the current state of the art when dealing with homogeneous or heterogeneous computation and memory constraints and is on par with LoRA regarding limited communication, thereby achieving significantly higher accuracies in FL training.

Modern transformer-based encoder-decoder architectures struggle with reasoning tasks due to their inability to effectively extract relational information between input objects (data/tokens). Recent work introduced the Abstractor module, embedded between transformer layers, to address this gap. However, the Abstractor layer while excelling at capturing relational information (pure relational reasoning), faces challenges in tasks that require both object and relational-level reasoning (partial relational reasoning). To address this, we propose RESOLVE, a neuro-vector symbolic architecture that combines object-level features with relational representations in high-dimensional spaces, using fast and efficient operations such as bundling (summation) and binding (Hadamard product) allowing both object-level features and relational representations to coexist within the same structure without interfering with one another. RESOLVE is driven by a novel attention mechanism that operates in a bipolar high dimensional space, allowing fast attention score computation compared to the state-of-the-art. By leveraging this design, the model achieves both low compute latency and memory efficiency. RESOLVE also offers better generalizability while achieving higher accuracy in purely relational reasoning tasks such as sorting as well as partial relational reasoning tasks such as math problem-solving compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Light-induced phase transitions offer a method to dynamically modulate topological states in bulk complex materials. Yet, next-generation devices demand nanoscale architectures with contact resistances near the quantum limit and precise control over local electronic properties. The layered material WTe$_2$ has gained attention as a likely Weyl semimetal, with topologically protected linear electronic band crossings hosting massless chiral fermions. Here, we demonstrate a topological phase transition facilitated by light-induced shear motion of a single atomic layer at the surface of bulk WTe$_2$, thereby opening the door to nanoscale device concepts. Ultrafast terahertz fields enhanced at the apex of an atomically sharp tip resonantly couple to the key interlayer shear mode of WTe$_2$ via a ferroelectric dipole at the interface, inducing a structural phase transition at the surface to a metastable state. Subatomically resolved differential imaging, combined with hybrid-level density functional theory, reveals a shift of 7 $\pm$ 3 picometres in the top atomic plane. Tunnelling spectroscopy links electronic changes across the phase transition with the electron and hole pockets in the band structure, suggesting a reversible, light-induced annihilation of the topologically-protected Fermi arc surface states in the top atomic layer.

This study introduces a novel data-centric approach to improve real-time surgical guidance using fiber-based fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIm). A key aspect of the methodology is the accurate detection of the aiming beam, which is essential for localizing points used to map FLIm measurements onto the tissue region within the surgical field. The primary challenge arises from the complex and variable conditions encountered in the surgical environment, particularly in Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS). Uneven illumination in the surgical field can cause reflections, reduce contrast, and results in inconsistent color representation, further complicating aiming beam detection. To overcome these challenges, an instance segmentation model was developed using a data-centric training strategy that improves accuracy by minimizing label noise and enhancing detection robustness. The model was evaluated on a dataset comprising 40 in vivo surgical videos, demonstrating a median detection rate of 85%. This performance was maintained when the model was integrated in a clinical system, achieving a similar detection rate of 85% during TORS procedures conducted in patients. The system's computational efficiency, measured at approximately 24 frames per second (FPS), was sufficient for real-time surgical guidance. Severe collisions can result from aggressive driving and poor road conditions, emphasizing the need for effective monitoring to ensure safety. Smartphones, with their array of built-in sensors, offer a practical and affordable solution for road-sensing. However, the lack of reliable, standardized datasets has hindered progress in assessing road conditions and driving patterns. This study addresses this gap by introducing a comprehensive dataset derived from smartphone sensors, which surpasses existing datasets by incorporating a diverse range of sensors including accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, GPS, gravity, orientation, and uncalibrated sensors. These sensors capture extensive parameters such as acceleration force, gravitation, rotation rate, magnetic field strength, and vehicle speed, providing a detailed understanding of road conditions and driving behaviors. The dataset is designed to enhance road safety, infrastructure maintenance, traffic management, and urban planning. The advancement of 5G and NextG networks through Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) architecture enables a shift toward virtualized, modular, and disaggregated configurations. A core component of O-RAN is the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC), which manages RAN using machine learning-driven xApps that access sensitive data from RAN and User Equipment (UE), stored in the near Real-Time RIC (Near-RT RIC) database. This shared, open environment increases the risk of unauthorized data exposure. To address these concerns, this paper proposes a zero-trust RIC (ZT-RIC) framework that preserves data privacy across the RIC platform, including the RIC database, xApps, and E2 interface. ZT-RIC employs Inner Product Functional Encryption (IPFE) to encrypt RAN/UE data at the base station, preventing leaks through the E2 interface and shared database. Additionally, ZT-RIC enables xApps to perform inference on encrypted data without exposing sensitive information. For evaluation, a state-of-the-art InterClass xApp, which detects jamming signals using RAN key performance metrics (KPMs), is implemented. Testing on an LTE/5G O-RAN testbed shows that ZT-RIC preserves data confidentiality while achieving 97.9% accuracy in jamming detection and meeting sub-second latency requirements, with a round-trip time (RTT) of 0.527 seconds., Comment: This paper has been accepted to CCNC 2025

In this article we consider likelihood-based estimation of static parameters for a class of partially observed McKean-Vlasov (POMV) diffusion process with discrete-time observations over a fixed time interval. In particular, using the framework of [5] we develop a new randomized multilevel Monte Carlo method for estimating the parameters, based upon Markovian stochastic approximation methodology. New Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms for the POMV model are introduced facilitating the application of [5]. We prove, under assumptions, that the expectation of our estimator is biased, but with expected small and controllable bias. Our approach is implemented on several examples.

In this paper, we introduce a broad class of metrics on the slit tangent bundle of Finsler manifolds, termed \emph{$F$-natural metrics}. These metrics parallel the well-established $g$-natural metrics on the tangent bundles of Riemannian manifolds and are constructed using six real functions defined over the domain of positive real numbers. In recent years, the development of the Lunar Gateway and Artemis missions has renewed interest in lunar exploration, including both manned and unmanned missions. This interest necessitates accurate initial orbit determination (IOD) and orbit prediction (OP) in this domain, which faces significant challenges such as severe nonlinearity, sensitivity to initial conditions, large state-space volume, and sparse, faint, and unreliable measurements. This paper explores the capability of data-driven Koopman operator-based approximations for OP in these scenarios. Three stable periodic trajectories from distinct cislunar families are analyzed. The analysis includes theoretical justification for using a linear time-invariant system as the data-driven surrogate. This theoretical framework is supported by experimental validation. Gaussian processes (GPs) are a ubiquitous tool for geostatistical modeling with high levels of flexibility and interpretability, and the ability to make predictions at unseen spatial locations through a process called Kriging. Estimation of Kriging weights relies on the inversion of the process' covariance matrix, creating a computational bottleneck for large spatial datasets. In this paper, we propose an Amortized Bayesian Local Interpolation NetworK (A-BLINK) for fast covariance parameter estimation, which uses two pre-trained deep neural networks to learn a mapping from spatial location coordinates and covariance function parameters to Kriging weights and the spatial variance, respectively. The fast prediction time of these networks allows us to bypass the matrix inversion step, creating large computational speedups over competing methods in both frequentist and Bayesian settings, and also provides full posterior inference and predictions using Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling methods. We show significant increases in computational efficiency over comparable scalable GP methodology in an extensive simulation study with lower parameter estimation error. The efficacy of our approach is also demonstrated using a temperature dataset of US climate normals for 1991--2020 based on over 7,000 weather stations.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) operations, such as semantic sentiment analysis and text synthesis, may often impair users' privacy and demand significant on device computational resources. Centralized learning (CL) on the edge offers an alternative energy-efficient approach, yet requires the collection of raw information, which affects the user's privacy. While Federated learning (FL) preserves privacy, it requires high computational energy on board tiny user devices. We introduce split learning (SL) as an energy-efficient alternative, privacy-preserving tiny machine learning (TinyML) scheme and compare it to FL and CL in the presence of Rayleigh fading and additive noise. Our results show that SL reduces processing power and CO2 emissions while maintaining high accuracy, whereas FL offers a balanced compromise between efficiency and privacy. The emergence of movable antenna (MA) technology has marked a significant advancement in the field of wireless communication research, paving the way for enhanced connectivity, improved signal quality, and adaptability across diverse environments. By allowing antennas to adjust positions dynamically within a finite area at transceivers, this technology enables more favourable channel conditions, optimizing performance across applications like mobile telecommunications and remote sensing. However, throughout history, the introduction of every new technology has presented opportunities for misuse by malicious individuals. Just as MAs can enhance connectivity, they may also be exploited for disruptive purposes such as jamming. In this paper, we examine the impact of an MA-enhanced jamming system equipped with $M$ antennas in a downlink multi-user communication scenario, where a base station (BS) with $N$ antennas transmits data to $K$ single-antenna users. Simulation results show that an adversary equipped with MAs reduce the system sum rate by $30\%$ more effectively than fixed-position antennas (FPAs). Additionally, MAs increase the outage probability by $25\%$ over FPAs, leading to a $20\%$ increase in the number of users experiencing outages. Atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common cardiac arrhythmia, is associated with heart failure and stroke. Accurate segmentation of the left atrium (LA) in 3D late gadolinium-enhanced (LGE) MRI is helpful for evaluating AF, as fibrotic remodeling in the LA myocardium contributes to arrhythmia and serves as a key determinant of therapeutic strategies. However, manual LA segmentation is labor-intensive and challenging. Recent foundational deep learning models, such as the Segment Anything Model (SAM), pre-trained on diverse datasets, have demonstrated promise in generic segmentation tasks. MedSAM, a fine-tuned version of SAM for medical applications, enables efficient, zero-shot segmentation without domain-specific training. Despite the potential of MedSAM model, it has not yet been evaluated for the complex task of LA segmentation in 3D LGE-MRI. This study aims to (1) evaluate the performance of MedSAM in automating LA segmentation, (2) compare the performance of the MedSAM2 model, which uses a single prompt with automated tracking, with the MedSAM1 model, which requires separate prompt for each slice, and (3) analyze the performance of MedSAM1 in terms of Dice score(i.e., segmentation accuracy) by varying the size and location of the box prompt.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is often underdiagnosed in females due to gender-specific symptom differences overlooked by conventional diagnostics. This study evaluates machine learning models, particularly Random Forest and convolutional neural networks, for enhancing ASD diagnosis through structured data and facial image analysis. Random Forest achieved 100% validation accuracy across datasets, highlighting its ability to manage complex relationships and reduce false negatives, which is crucial for early intervention and addressing gender biases. In image-based analysis, MobileNet outperformed the baseline CNN, achieving 87% accuracy, though a 30% validation loss suggests possible overfitting, requiring further optimization for robustness in clinical settings. Future work will emphasize hyperparameter tuning, regularization, and transfer learning. Integrating behavioral data with facial analysis could improve diagnosis for underdiagnosed groups. These findings suggest Random Forest's high accuracy and balanced precision-recall metrics could enhance clinical workflows. MobileNet's lightweight structure also shows promise for resource-limited environments, enabling accessible ASD screening. Addressing model explainability and clinician trust will be vital.

Deep learning (DL) models are popular across various domains due to their remarkable performance and efficiency. However, their effectiveness relies heavily on large amounts of labeled data, which are often time-consuming and labor-intensive to generate manually. To overcome this challenge, it is essential to develop strategies that reduce reliance on extensive labeled data while preserving model performance. In this paper, we propose FisherMask, a Fisher information-based active learning (AL) approach that identifies key network parameters by masking them based on their Fisher information values. FisherMask enhances batch AL by using Fisher information to select the most critical parameters, allowing the identification of the most impactful samples during AL training. Moreover, Fisher information possesses favorable statistical properties, offering valuable insights into model behavior and providing a better understanding of the performance characteristics within the AL pipeline. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that FisherMask significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods on diverse datasets, including CIFAR-10 and FashionMNIST, especially under imbalanced settings. These improvements lead to substantial gains in labeling efficiency. Hence serving as an effective tool to measure the sensitivity of model parameters to data samples. Due to the high costs of optical fiber deployment in Low-Density and Rural Areas (LDRAs), 5G Fixed Wireless Access (5G FWA) recently emerged as an affordable solution. A widely adopted deployment scenario of 5G FWA includes edge cloud that supports computing services and Radio Access Network (RAN) functions. Such edge cloud requires network and energy resources for 5G FWA. This paper proposes renewable energy powered and Open RAN-based architecture for 5G FWA serving LDRAs using three-level closed-loops. Open RAN is a new 5G RAN architecture allowing Open Central Unit and Open Distributed Unit to be distributed in virtualized environment. The first closed-loop distributes radio resources to Open RAN instances and slices at the edge cloud. The second closed-loop allocates radio resources to houses. We design a new energy model that leverages renewable energy. We jointly optimize radio and energy resource allocation in closed-loop 3. We formulate ultra-small and small-time scale optimization problems that link closed-loops to maximize communication utility while minimizing energy costs. We propose reinforcement learning and successive convex approximation to solve the formulated problems. Then, we use solution data and continual learning to improve resource allocation on a large timescale. Our proposal satisfies 97.14% slice delay budget.

Internet access in rural areas should be improved to support digital inclusion and 5G services. Due to the high deployment costs of fiber optics in these areas, Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) has become a preferable alternative. Additionally, the Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) can facilitate the interoperability of FWA elements, allowing some FWA functions to be deployed at the edge cloud. However, deploying edge clouds in rural areas can increase network and energy costs. To address these challenges, we propose a closed-loop system assisted by a Digital Twin (DT) to automate energy-aware O-RAN based FWA resource management in rural areas. We consider the FWA and edge cloud as the Physical Twin (PT) and design a closed-loop that distributes radio resources to edge cloud instances for scheduling. We develop another closed-loop for intra-slice resource allocation to houses. We design an energy model that integrates radio resource allocation and formulate ultra-small and small-timescale optimizations for the PT to maximize slice requirement satisfaction while minimizing energy costs. We then design a reinforcement learning approach and successive convex approximation to address the formulated problems. We present a DT that replicates the PT by incorporating solution experiences into future states. The results show that our approach efficiently uses radio and energy resources.

Data forging attacks provide counterfactual proof that a model was trained on a given dataset, when in fact, it was trained on another. These attacks work by forging (replacing) mini-batches with ones containing distinct training examples that produce nearly identical gradients. Data forging appears to break any potential avenues for data governance, as adversarial model owners may forge their training set from a dataset that is not compliant to one that is. Given these serious implications on data auditing and compliance, we critically analyse data forging from both a practical and theoretical point of view, finding that a key practical limitation of current attack methods makes them easily detectable by a verifier; namely that they cannot produce sufficiently identical gradients. Theoretically, we analyse the question of whether two distinct mini-batches can produce the same gradient. Generally, we find that while there may exist an infinite number of distinct mini-batches with real-valued training examples and labels that produce the same gradient, finding those that are within the allowed domain e.g. pixel values between 0-255 and one hot labels is a non trivial task. Our results call for the reevaluation of the strength of existing attacks, and for additional research into successful data forging, given the serious consequences it may have on machine learning and privacy., Comment: 18 pages

In the context of low-resource languages, the Algerian dialect (AD) faces challenges due to the absence of annotated corpora, hindering its effective processing, notably in Machine Learning (ML) applications reliant on corpora for training and assessment. This study outlines the development process of a specialized corpus for Fake News (FN) detection and sentiment analysis (SA) in AD called FASSILA. This corpus comprises 10,087 sentences, encompassing over 19,497 unique words in AD, and addresses the significant lack of linguistic resources in the language and covers seven distinct domains. We propose an annotation scheme for FN detection and SA, detailing the data collection, cleaning, and labelling process. Remarkable Inter-Annotator Agreement indicates that the annotation scheme produces consistent annotations of high quality. Subsequent classification experiments using BERT-based models and ML models are presented, demonstrate promising results and highlight avenues for further research. This paper discusses further evaluations of the educational effectiveness of an existing CPU visual simulator (CPUVSIM). The CPUVSIM, as an Open Educational Resource, has been iteratively improved over a number of years following an Open Pedagogy approach, and was designed to enhance novices understanding of computer operation and mapping from high-level code to assembly language. The literature reports previous evaluations of the simulator, at K12 and undergraduate level, conducted from the perspectives of both developers and students, albeit with a limited sample size and primarily through qualitative methods. This paper describes additional evaluation activities designed to provide a more comprehensive assessment, across diverse educational settings: an action research pilot study recently carried out in Singapore and the planning of a more quantitative-oriented study in Dubai, with a larger sample size. Quantum technologies provide many applications for information processing tasks that are impossible to realize within classical physics. These capabilities include such fundamental resources as generating secure, i.e. private and unpredictable random values. Yet, the problem of quantifying the amount of generated randomness is still not fully solved. This work presents a comprehensive analysis of the design and performance optimization of a Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) based on Bell inequality violations. We investigate key protocol parameters, including the smoothing parameter ($\epsilon_{\text{s}}$), test round probability ($\gamma$), and switching delays, and their effects on the generation rate and quality of randomness. We identify optimal ranges for $\gamma$ and $p_\Omega$ (the protocol's non-aborting probability) to balance the trade-off between randomness consumption and net randomness generation. Additionally, we explore the impact of switching delays on the system's performance, providing strategies to mitigate these effects. Our results indicate substantial developments in QRNG implementations and offer higher randomness expansion rates. The superior performance introduced by deep learning approaches in removing atmospheric particles such as snow and rain from a single image; favors their usage over classical ones. However, deep learning-based approaches still suffer from challenges related to the particle appearance characteristics such as size, type, and transparency. Furthermore, due to the unique characteristics of rain and snow particles, single network based deep learning approaches struggle in handling both degradation scenarios simultaneously. In this paper, a global framework that consists of two Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) is proposed where each handles the removal of each particle individually. The architectures of both desnowing and deraining GANs introduce the integration of a feature extraction phase with the classical U-net generator network which in turn enhances the removal performance in the presence of severe variations in size and appearance. Furthermore, a realistic dataset that contains pairs of snowy images next to their groundtruth images estimated using a low-rank approximation approach; is presented. The experiments show that the proposed desnowing and deraining approaches achieve significant improvements in comparison to the state-of-the-art approaches when tested on both synthetic and realistic datasets.

This paper introduces a novel approach to urban pathfinding by transforming traditional heuristic-based algorithms into deep learning models that leverage real-time contextual data, such as traffic and weather conditions. We propose two methods: an enhanced A* algorithm that dynamically adjusts routes based on current environmental conditions, and a neural network model that predicts the next optimal path segment using historical and live data. An extensive benchmark was conducted to compare the performance of different deep learning models, including MLP, GRU, LSTM, Autoencoders, and Transformers. Both methods were evaluated in a simulated urban environment in Berlin, with the neural network model outperforming traditional methods, reducing travel times by up to 40%, while the enhanced A* algorithm achieved a 34% improvement. These results demonstrate the potential of deep learning to optimize urban navigation in real time, providing more adaptable and efficient routing solutions.

Emojis improve communication quality among smart-phone users that use mobile keyboards to exchange text. To predict emojis for users based on input text, we should consider the on-device low memory and time constraints, ensure that the on-device emoji classifier covers a wide range of emoji classes even though the emoji dataset is typically imbalanced, and adapt the emoji classifier output to user favorites. This paper proposes an on-device emoji classifier based on MobileBert with reasonable memory and latency requirements for SwiftKey. To account for the data imbalance, we utilize the widely used GPT to generate one or more tags for each emoji class. For each emoji and corresponding tags, we merge the original set with GPT-generated sentences and label them with this emoji without human intervention to alleviate the data imbalance. At inference time, we interpolate the emoji output with the user history for emojis for better emoji classifications. Results show that the proposed on-device emoji classifier deployed for SwiftKey increases the accuracy performance of emoji prediction particularly on rare emojis and emoji engagement., Comment: 8 pages

The Privacy Preserving Federated Learning Document VQA (PFL-DocVQA) competition challenged the community to develop provably private and communication-efficient solutions in a federated setting for a real-life use case: invoice processing. The competition introduced a dataset of real invoice documents, along with associated questions and answers requiring information extraction and reasoning over the document images. Thereby, it brings together researchers and expertise from the document analysis, privacy, and federated learning communities. Participants fine-tuned a pre-trained, state-of-the-art Document Visual Question Answering model provided by the organizers for this new domain, mimicking a typical federated invoice processing setup. The base model is a multi-modal generative language model, and sensitive information could be exposed through either the visual or textual input modality. Participants proposed elegant solutions to reduce communication costs while maintaining a minimum utility threshold in track 1 and to protect all information from each document provider using differential privacy in track 2. The competition served as a new testbed for developing and testing private federated learning methods, simultaneously raising awareness about privacy within the document image analysis and recognition community. The rapid growth of UAV applications necessitates a robust communication and networking architecture capable of addressing the diverse requirements of various applications concurrently, rather than relying on application-specific solutions. This paper proposes a generic and reliable multi-UAV communication and networking architecture designed to support the varying demands of heterogeneous applications, including short-range and long-range communication, star and mesh topologies, different data rates, and multiple wireless standards. Our architecture accommodates both adhoc and infrastructure networks, ensuring seamless connectivity throughout the network. Additionally, we present the design of a multi-protocol UAV gateway that enables interoperability among various communication protocols. Furthermore, we introduce a data processing and service layer framework with a graphical user interface of a ground control station that facilitates remote control and monitoring from any location at any time. Denial of Service (DoS) attacks pose a significant threat in the realm of AI systems security, causing substantial financial losses and downtime. However, AI systems' high computational demands, dynamic behavior, and data variability make monitoring and detecting DoS attacks challenging. Nowadays, statistical and machine learning (ML)-based DoS classification and detection approaches utilize a broad range of feature selection mechanisms to select a feature subset from networking traffic datasets. Feature selection is critical in enhancing the overall model performance and attack detection accuracy while reducing the training time. In this paper, we investigate the importance of feature selection in improving ML-based detection of DoS attacks. The randomized power method has gained significant interest due to its simplicity and efficient handling of large-scale spectral analysis and recommendation tasks. As modern datasets contain sensitive private information, we need to give formal guarantees on the possible privacy leaks caused by this method. This paper focuses on enhancing privacy preserving variants of the method. We propose a strategy to reduce the variance of the noise introduced to achieve Differential Privacy (DP). We also adapt the method to a decentralized framework with a low computational and communication overhead, while preserving the accuracy. We leverage Secure Aggregation (a form of Multi-Party Computation) to allow the algorithm to perform computations using data distributed among multiple users or devices, without revealing individual data. We show that it is possible to use a noise scale in the decentralized setting that is similar to the one in the centralized setting. We improve upon existing convergence bounds for both the centralized and decentralized versions. The proposed method is especially relevant for decentralized applications such as distributed recommender systems, where privacy concerns are paramount.

This paper presents a communication and energy-aware Multi-UAV Coverage Path Planning (mCPP) method for scenarios requiring continuous inter-UAV communication, such as cooperative search and rescue and surveillance missions. Unlike existing mCPP solutions that focus on energy, time, or coverage efficiency, our approach generates coverage paths that require minimal the communication range to maintain inter-UAV connectivity while also optimizing energy consumption. The mCPP problem is formulated as a multi-objective optimization task, aiming to minimize both the communication range requirement and energy consumption. Our approach significantly reduces the communication range needed for maintaining connectivity while ensuring energy efficiency, outperforming state-of-the-art methods. Its effectiveness is validated through simulations on complex and arbitrary shaped regions of interests, including scenarios with no-fly zones. Additionally, real-world experiment demonstrate its high accuracy, achieving 99\% consistency between the estimated and actual communication range required during a multi-UAV coverage mission involving three UAVs.

Attosecond science has leveraged the highly nonlinear interactions between intense few-cycle laser pulses and matter, allowing for unprecedented observation and control of electron motion with remarkable temporal resolution. However, most existing experiments focusing on laser-controlled attosecond dynamics have dealt with quasi-bound electrons released in the ionization continua of atoms, molecules, or conduction bands in solid-state systems. Here, we employed the recently developed attomicroscopy imaging tool to investigate, visualize, and manipulate the motion of bound electrons in graphene. By adjusting the carrier-envelope phase and the field strength of the driving electric field, we were able to control both the amplitude and direction of the field-induced electron current between carbon atoms in graphene. This research opens new avenues for understanding and controlling dynamic, on-demand electron motion processes, including chemical reactions, molecular bonding, and the electronic properties of materials.
