Perfluorinated compounds are ubiquitous. Approximately 4,700 PFAS have been identified to date. Some examples of these products include carpets, glass, paper, clothing, and other textiles, cookware, food packaging, electronics, and personal care products. PFAS have been used in industrial and consumer products since the 1950s due to their physical and chemical properties. PFAS molecules can include oxygen, hydrogen, sulphur, and/or nitrogen atoms, whereas perfluorocarbon molecules contain only carbon and fluorine atoms. Perfluorinated compounds (PFAS) contain a fully fluorinated hydrophobic linear carbon chain attached to one or more hydrophilic head groups. The carbon-fluorine bond is so strong that these chemicals do not degrade in the environment. They are often referred to as ‘forever chemicals’. Some PFAS have been linked to an increased risk of cancer, high cholesterol, reproductive disorders, hormonal disruption or endocrine disruption, and weakening of the immune system. Currently, two PFAS are restricted under the international Stockholm Convention on POPs and the EU POPs Regulation. PFOS (perfluoroctanesulfonic acid) and its derivatives have been restricted since 2009/2010. PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), its salts, and related compounds are also regulated as of 4th July 2020. Over the past decades, global manufacturers have started to substitute long-chain PFAS with shorter-chain PFAS or with non-fluorinated substances. This trend has been driven by the fact that the undesired effects of long-chain PFAS on human health and the environment were assessed and recognised first by scientists and authorities around the globe. However short-chain PFAS are now thought to have similar or other properties of concern such as fluorinated compounds like Gen X and ADONA. The combined effects of PFAS are not widely studied and relatively unknown. There is also little biological assessment currently done for drinking water and especially marine water. These are both research gaps, by using biological assessment one can study the cumulative and combined effect of various PFAS on marine species which is what we aim to do in this study

This protocol was developed based on the knowledge acquired in the framework of the Interreg MONITOOL project (EAPA_565/2016) where extensive sampling campaigns were performed in transitional and coastal waters covering eight European countries. It provides detailed procedures and guidelines for the sampling of these waterbodies by concurrent collection of discrete water samples and the deployment of Diffusive Gradient in Thin-films (DGT) passive samplers for the measurement of trace metal concentrations. In order to facilitate the application of this protocol by end-users, it presents steps to follow in the laboratory prior to sampling campaigns, explains the procedures for field campaigns (including in situ measurement of supporting parameters) and subsequent sample processing in the laboratory in preparation for trace metal analyze by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and voltammetry. The protocol provides a systematic, coherent field sampling and sample preparation strategy that was developed in order to ensure comparability and reproducibility of the data obtained from each project Partner in different regions. • Standardization of the concurrent sampling of transitional and coastal waters by DGT passive samplers and spot sampling. • Robust procedures and tips based on existing international standards and comprehensive practical experience. • Links to demonstration videos produced within the MONITOOL project.

According to the Article 17(2) of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), Member States have to review and update their marine strategies every six years. This requires updates of the MSFD Articles 8, 9 and 10 by 2018. The current report provides an overview of the substances, matrices and threshold values that Member States intend to use for the assessment of the Descriptor 8 in this MSFD reporting cycle. This compilation aims at evaluating gaps and discrepancies between Member States and identifying aspects that need further harmonization. It also helps understand which issues should be addressed to achieve consistency with the new MSFD Commission Decision (EU 2017/848). The information has been gathered from the contributions of the MSFD Expert Network on Contaminants, an informal network established to support MSFD implementation. The overall aim of this project was to increase Ireland’s capacity for the generation of integrated monitoring of biological effects and chemical measurement data and for the completion of a pilot scale assessment of the quality of the Irish marine environment at a number of selected locations., Sea Change Strategy with the support of the Marine Institute and the Marine Research Sub Programme of the National Development Plan 2007-2013, and funding from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

The challenges of monitoring our waters for compliance with WFD and the expansion of the list of organic chemicals that are to be added for monitoring, provides impetus for investigation of alternative monitoring approaches such as passive sampling. The work being carried out represents an important collaboration between two research centres (DCU & MI) together with agency (EA UK and Inland Fisheries Ireland) and industry (TelLab) to assess the potential of passive sampling in monitoring priority pollutants in Ireland. This work is underpinned by a some studies carried out in Ireland already by the Marine Institute and a vast array of literature in the area of priority pollutant monitoring. The impact of this study may lie in the establishment of a capability to utilise passive sampling in the monitoring programme in Ireland for WFD. This project pilots the use of passive sampling technology (PDMS and POCIS) combined with biota monitoring to assess the presence of priority substances in Irish surface waters. The project focuses in particular on new pollutants earmarked as candidates for the Annex X priority substances list under the EU Water Framework Directive e.g. E2 and EE2, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, PFOS etc. This considers the implications for compliance with current and proposed EQS and investigates the potential for incorporating passive sampling and biota testing in future compliance, investigative and trend monitoring. RATIONALE: Stable isotope values (d13C and d15N) of darted skin and blubber biopsies can shed light on habitat use and diet of cetaceans, which are otherwise difficult to study. Non-dietary factors affect isotopic variability, chiefly the depletion of 13C due to the presence of 12C-rich lipids. The efficacy of post hoc lipid-correction models (normalization) must be tested. METHODS: For tissues with high natural lipid content (e.g., whale skin and blubber), chemical lipid extraction or normalization is necessary. C:N ratios, d13C values and d15N values were determined for duplicate control and lipid-extracted skin and blubber of fin (Balaenoptera physalus), humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) and minke whales (B. acutorostrata) by continuous-flow elemental analysis isotope ratio mass spectrometry (CF-EA-IRMS). Six different normalization models were tested to correct d13C values for the presence of lipids. RESULTS: Following lipid extraction, significant increases in d13C valueswere observed for both tissues in the three species. Significant increases were also found for d15N values in minke whale skin and fin whale blubber. In fin whale skin, the d15N values decreased, with no change observed in humpback whale skin. Non-linear models generally out-performed linear models and the suitability ofmodels varied by species and tissue, indicating the need for high model specificity, even among these closely related taxa. CONCLUSIONS: Given the poor predictive power of the models to estimate lipid-free d13C values, and the unpredictable changes in d15N values due to lipid-extraction, we recommend against arithmetical normalization in accounting for lipid effects on d13C values for balaenopterid skin or blubber samples. This document provides guidance on best practice for the use of Diffusive Gradient in Thin films (DGT) passive samplers devices in sampling of transitional and coastal waters for water quality monitoring. The methodology1 to be addressed in this guide was developed by the consortium of the European Union’s Interreg MONITOOL Project in order to ensure comparability and reproducibility of the data obtained from each project Partner in different regions. The guide provides practical and detailed information on all the aspects to be considered before the deployment of these devices and the essential steps for their deployment, retrieval and subsequent sample processing for the analysis of trace metals. Although it is not aimed as a standard protocol, these guidelines address the need for a common approach and the intention to promote best practice.

Despite repeated calls for an ecosystem-based approach to the management of marine resources, little information exists on the ecosystem role and requirements of top predators such as baleen whales in Irish waters. Considering that they are long-lived and highly migratory, baleen whales such as rorquals (Family Balaenopteridae] are potentially useful bio-monitors of anthropogenic environmental change. However, their use as environmental indicators is precluded by an insufficient understanding of their basic ecology. Following centuries of whaling and other emerging threats to their survival including pollution, bycatch and ship-strikes, the conservation status of most rorqual species is difficult to assess due to a shortfall in our knowledge. This thesis aims to facilitate more informed management decision-making and the implementation of more effective conservation measures by bridging key gaps in our knowledge. Pertinent questions on feeding and migration ecology are addressed using intrinsic markers, i.e. chemicals whose stable properties ensure they move through biotic systems and are detectable in tissues. Intrinsic markers include naturally occurring [e.g. stable isotopes, DNA, trace elements] and anthropogenic compounds (e.g persistent organic pollutants or POPs]. In Chapter 1, current knowledge on the ecology of blue [Balaenoptera musculus], fin (R physalus), humpback (Megaptera novaengliae] and minke whales (Racutorostrata] in Irish waters is reviewed. In chapter 2, stable isotope analysis of baleen from these four species is used to approximate the ecological niche and thus to examine resource partitioning. Chapter 3 is a methodological precursor to Chapter 4 where stable isotope Bayesian mixing models are used to investigate the preferred diet of fin and humpback whales in the Celtic Sea.
