- Abstract
An ion cyclotron emission (ICE) diagnostic is prepared for installation into the W7-X stellarator, with the aim to be operated in the 2022 experimental campaign. The design is based on the successful ICE diagnostic on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. The new diagnostic consists of four B-dot probes, mounted about 72° toroidally away (one module) from the neutral beam injector, with an unobstructed plasma view. Two of the B-dot probes are oriented parallel to the local magnetic field, aimed to detect fast magnetosonic waves. The remaining two probes are oriented poloidally, with the aim to detect slow waves. The radio frequency (RF) signals picked up by the probes are transferred via 50 Ω vacuum-compatible coaxial cables to RF detectors. Narrow band notch filters are used to protect the detectors from possible RF waves launched by the W7-X antenna. The signal will be sampled with a four-channel fast analog-to-digital converter with 14 bit depth and 1 GSample/s sampling rate. The diagnostic's phase-frequency characteristic is properly measured in order to allow measuring the wave vectors of the picked up waves.

- Abstract
Bursts of ion cyclotron emission (ICE), with spectral peaks corresponding to the hydrogen cyclotron harmonic frequencies in the plasma core are detected from helium plasmas heated by sub-Alfv´enic beam-injected hydrogen ions in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. Based on the fast ion distribution function obtained from TRANSP/NUBEAM code, together with a linear analytical theory of the magnetoacoustic cyclotron instability (MCI), the growth rates of MCI could be calculated. In our theoretical and experimental studies, we found that the excitation mechanism of core ICE driven by sub-Alfv´enic beam ions in ASDEX Upgrade is MCI as the time evolution of MCI growth rates is broadly consistent with measured ICE amplitudes. The MCI growth rate is very sensitive to the energy and velocity distribution of beam-injected ions and is suppressed by the slowing down of the dominant beam-injected ion velocity and the spreading of the fast ion distribution profile. This may help to account for the experimental observation that ICE signals disappear within ∼3 ms after the NBI turn-off time, much faster than the slowing down times of the beam ions.

- Abstract
Ion cyclotron emission (ICE) signals whose spectral peaks match the fundamental cyclotron frequencies of hydrogen and tritium in the plasma core, near the magnetic axis, are observed in ASDEX Upgrade deuterium plasmas. In these cases the only source of energetic (⩾1 MeV) hydrogen and tritium ions is D–D fusion reactions between neutral beam injected deuterium ions and bulk deuterium ions. Hydrogen-matched core ICE is observed in a wide variety of ASDEX Upgrade plasmas, while tritium-matched core ICE is (so far) only observed in so-called H-mode density limit plasmas. In all cases ICE signals are detected directly using B-dot probes, which provide information on the emission frequency, the amplitude, and, in principle, the parallel wavenumber values. These observations support the idea of using an ICE-based diagnostic to monitor the presence of fusion-born alpha particles in tritium-burning fusion plasmas on devices such as JET, ITER, CFETR, or DEMO.

- Abstract
The interaction between fast-ions and edge localized modes (ELMs) is investigated by means of fast-ion loss detector measurements. Fast-ion losses are increased during ELMs exhibiting a 3D filamentary-like behaviour. An accelerated beam ion population has been observed during ELMs in a tokamak for the first time. Tomographic inversion of the measured fast-ion losses reveal multiple velocity-space structures. Attending to the experimental observations, an acceleration mechanism is proposed based on a resonant interaction between the beam ions and parallel electric fields emerging during the ELM crash. The key experimental observations can be qualitatively reproduced by full-orbit following simulations of fast-ions in the presence of the ELM magnetic and electric perturbation fields. Our findings may shed light on the possible contribution of fast-ions to the ELM stability and the transient heat loads on plasma facing components.

- Abstract
Core ion cyclotron emission (ICE) signals have recently been observed in beam-heated plasmas on several tokamaks. In this manuscript we present experimental evidence in support of core ICE being generated by the magnetoacoustic cyclotron instability (MCI), itself driven by the velocity-space inversion of sub-Alfvénic beam-injected ions. The observed core ICE amplitude evolution in beam-heated plasmas is consistent with the MCI and is a result of competition between the beam ion fraction build-up (which increases the instability growth rate) and the slowing down of the dominant beam ion velocity component (which stabilizes the MCI). The oblique propagation angle is constrained to lie in the range 75–78°, where the lower bound is governed by the fast wave reabsorption losses on plasma electrons and bulk ions and the upper bound is governed by the experimentally observed ICE amplitude growth time. Although the oblique MCI is a local theory and does not provide information on the radial mode localization, the calculated instability growth rates are broadly consistent with the observed dynamics of the core ICE amplitude on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak.

- Abstract
For the past several years, the JET scientific programme (Pamela et al 2007 Fusion Eng. Des. 82 590) has been engaged in a multi-campaign effort, including experiments in D, H and T, leading up to 2020 and the first experiments with 50%/50% D–T mixtures since 1997 and the first ever D–T plasmas with the ITER mix of plasma-facing component materials. For this purpose, a concerted physics and technology programme was launched with a view to prepare the D–T campaign (DTE2). This paper addresses the key elements developed by the JET programme directly contributing to the D–T preparation. This intense preparation includes the review of the physics basis for the D–T operational scenarios, including the fusion power predictions through first principle and integrated modelling, and the impact of isotopes in the operation and physics of D–T plasmas (thermal and particle transport, high confinement mode (H-mode) access, Be and W erosion, fuel recovery, etc). This effort also requires improving several aspects of plasma operation for DTE2, such as real time control schemes, heat load control, disruption avoidance and a mitigation system (including the installation of a new shattered pellet injector), novel ion cyclotron resonance heating schemes (such as the three-ions scheme), new diagnostics (neutron camera and spectrometer, active Alfvèn eigenmode antennas, neutral gauges, radiation hard imaging systems…) and the calibration of the JET neutron diagnostics at 14 MeV for accurate fusion power measurement. The active preparation of JET for the 2020 D–T campaign provides an incomparable source of information and a basis for the future D–T operation of ITER, and it is also foreseen that a large number of key physics issues will be addressed in support of burning plasmas.

- Abstract
Measurements are reported of electromagnetic emission close to the cyclotron frequency of energetic ions in JET plasmas heated by waves in the ion cylotron range of frequencies (ICRF). Hydrogen was the majority ion species in all of these plasmas. The measurements were obtained using a sub-harmonic arc detection system in the transmission lines of one of the ICRF antennas. The measured ion cyclotron emission spectra were strongly filtered by the antenna system, and typically contained sub-structure, consisting of sets of peaks with a separation of a few kHz, suggesting the excitation of compressional Alfvén eigenmodes closely spaced in frequency. In most cases the energetic ions can be clearly identified as ICRF wave-accelerated 3He minority ions, although in two pulses the emission may have been produced by energetic 4He ions, originating from third harmonic ICRF wave acceleration. It is proposed that the emission close to the 3He cyclotron frequency was produced by energetic ions of this species undergoing drift orbit excursions to the outer midplane plasma edge. Particle-in-cell and hybrid (kinetic ion, fluid electron) simulations using plasma parameters corresponding to edge plasma conditions in these JET pulses, and energetic particle parameters inferred from the cyclotron resonance location, indicate strong excitation of waves at multiple 3He cyclotron harmonics, including the fundamental, which is identified with the observed emission. These results underline the potential importance of ICE measurements as a method of studying confined fast particles that are strongly suprathermal but have insufficient energies or are not present in sufficient numbers to excite detectable levels of γ-ray emission or other collective instabilities., This work has been carried out within the framework of the EUROfusion Consortium and has received funding from the Euratom research and training programme 2014–2018 under grant agreement No 633053 and from the RCUK Energy Programme (grant number EP/P012450/1). - Abstract
The acceleration of beam ions during edge localized modes (ELMs) in a tokamak is observed for the first time through direct measurements of fast-ion losses in low collisionality plasmas. The accelerated beamion population exhibits well-localized velocity-space structures which are revealed by means of tomographic inversion of the measurement, showing energy gains of the order of tens of keV. This suggests that the ion acceleration results from a resonant interaction between the beam ions and parallel electric fields arising during the ELM. Orbit simulations are carried out to identify the mode-particle resonances responsible for the energy gain in the particle phase space. The observation motivates the incorporation of a kinetic description of fast particles in ELM models and may contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms responsible for particle acceleration, ubiquitous in astrophysical and space plasmas.

- Abstract
During development of a high-performance hybrid scenario for future deuterium–tritium experiments on the Joint European Torus, an increased level of fast ion losses in the MeV energy range was observed during the instability of high-frequency n = 1 fishbones. The fishbones are excited during deuterium neutral beam injection combined with ion cyclotron heating. The frequency range of the fishbones, 10–25 kHz, indicates that they are driven by a resonant interaction with the NBI-produced deuterium beam ions in the energy range ≤120 keV. The fast particle losses in a much higher energy range are measured with a fast ion loss detector, and the data show an expulsion of deuterium plasma fusion products, 1 MeV tritons and 3 MeV protons, during the fishbone bursts. An MHD mode analysis with the MISHKA code combined with the nonlinear wave-particle interaction code HAGIS shows that the loss of toroidal symmetry caused by the n = 1 fishbones affects strongly the confinement of non-resonant high energy fusion-born tritons and protons by perturbing their orbits and expelling them. This modelling is in a good agreement with the experimental data., This work has been carried out within the framework of the EUROfusion Consortium and has received funding from the Euratom research and training programme 2014-2018 under grant agreement No 633053 and from the RCUK Energy Programme [grant No EP/P012450/1]. - Abstract
The B-dot probe diagnostic suite on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak has recently been upgraded with a new 125 MHz, 14 bit resolution digitizer to study ion cyclotron emission (ICE). While classic edge emission from the low field side plasma is often observed, we also measure waves originating from the core with fast fusion protons or beam injected deuterons being a possible emission driver. Comparing the measured frequency values with ion cyclotron harmonics present in the plasma places the origin of this emission on the magnetic axis, with the fundamental hydrogen/second deuterium cyclotron harmonic matching the observed values. The actual values range from ∼27 MHz at the on-axis toroidal field BT = -1.79 T to ∼40 MHz at BT = -2.62 T. When the magnetic axis position evolves during this emission, the measured frequency values track the changes in the estimated on-axis cyclotron frequency values. Core ICE is usually a transient event lasting ∼100 ms during the neutral beam startup phase. However, in some cases, core emission occurs in steady-state plasmas and lasts for longer than 1 s. These observations suggest an attractive possibility of using a non-perturbing ICE-based diagnostic to passively monitor fusion alpha particles at the location of their birth in the plasma core, in deuterium-tritium burning devices such as ITER and DEMO.

- Abstract
The 2014–2016 JET results are reviewed in the light of their significance for optimising the ITER research plan for the active and non-active operation. More than 60 h of plasma operation with ITER first wall materials successfully took place since its installation in 2011. New multi-machine scaling of the type I-ELM divertor energy flux density to ITER is supported by first principle modelling. ITER relevant disruption experiments and first principle modelling are reported with a set of three disruption mitigation valves mimicking the ITER setup. Insights of the L–H power threshold in Deuterium and Hydrogen are given, stressing the importance of the magnetic configurations and the recent measurements of fine-scale structures in the edge radial electric. Dimensionless scans of the core and pedestal confinement provide new information to elucidate the importance of the first wall material on the fusion performance. H-mode plasmas at ITER triangularity (H = 1 at βN ~ 1.8 and n/nGW ~ 0.6) have been sustained at 2 MA during 5 s. The ITER neutronics codes have been validated on high performance experiments. Prospects for the coming D–T campaign and 14 MeV neutron calibration strategy are reviewed.

- Abstract
Integrating the plasma core performance with an edge and scrape-off layer (SOL) that leads to tolerable heat and particle loads on the wall is a major challenge. The new European medium size tokamak task force (EU-MST) coordinates research on ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), MAST and TCV. This multi-machine approach within EU-MST, covering a wide parameter range, is instrumental to progress in the field, as ITER and DEMO core/pedestal and SOL parameters are not achievable simultaneously in present day devices. A two prong approach is adopted. On the one hand, scenarios with tolerable transient heat and particle loads, including active edge localised mode (ELM) control are developed. On the other hand, divertor solutions including advanced magnetic configurations are studied. Considerable progress has been made on both approaches, in particular in the fields of: ELM control with resonant magnetic perturbations (RMP), small ELM regimes, detachment onset and control, as well as filamentary scrape-off-layer transport. For example full ELM suppression has now been achieved on AUG at low collisionality with n = 2 RMP maintaining good confinement HH(98,y2)≈0.95 Advances have been made with respect to detachment onset and control. Studies in advanced divertor configurations (Snowflake, Super-X and X-point target divertor) shed new light on SOL physics. Cross field filamentary transport has been characterised in a wide parameter regime on AUG, MAST and TCV progressing the theoretical and experimental understanding crucial for predicting first wall loads in ITER and DEMO. Conditions in the SOL also play a crucial role for ELM stability and access to small ELM regimes.

- Abstract
An increase in ELM frequency has been demonstrated in MAST by applying resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) with toroidal mode number, nRMP = 2, 3, 4, 6. It has been observed that the mitigated ELM frequency increases with the amplitude of the applied field provided it is above a critical threshold. This threshold value depends on the mode number of the RMP, with higher nRMP having a larger critical value. For the same ELM frequency, the reduction in the peak heat load on the divertor plates is approximately the same for all RMP configurations. The RMPs give rise to perturbations to the plasma shape, with lobe structures occurring due to the tangled magnetic fields near the X-point, and corrugations of the plasma boundary at the midplane. The X-point lobe length increases linearly with the applied field when above a threshold, with RMPs of higher toroidal mode number giving rise to longer lobes for the same applied resonant field. Similarly, the midplane displacements increase with the applied field strength, though the corrugation amplitude is less dependent upon the RMP configuration. For all nRMP, the RMPs result in enhanced particle transport and a reduction in the pedestal pressure gradient caused by an increased pedestal width, which is found to be consistent with a decrease in the critical pressure at which infinite-n ballooning modes are driven unstable in non-axisymmetric plasmas. The plasma rotation braking is strongest for lowest nRMP whilst the degradation of access to H-mode resultant from the application of RMPs are non-monotonic in nRMP, with the optimal case for both occurring for nRMP = 4. Whilst there are advantages and disadvantages for all RMP configurations, the configurations found to be optimised in terms of pedestal degradation, access to H-mode, plasma rotation and distortion to the plasma configuration in MAST are nRMP = 3 or 4, consistent with the configurations anticipated for use in ITER.

- Abstract
In this paper we study the effects of poloidal and toroidal rotation, and anisotropy in tokamaks. To resolve these effects from uncertainties in the data, we introduce a Bayesian inference framework which calculates the magnetic configuration probabilistically using motional Stark effect and magnetic data. Drawing on these calculations, we compute the poloidal and toroidal Mach numbers in MAST for a discharge with good rotation data. Our calculations confirm that the poloidal Mach number Ms, = v/vi × B/B is near zero (with v and vi the poloidal and thermal velocity, respectively), even on the outboard side where the scaling of poloidal field strength B to total field B is large. In contrast, the toroidal rotation of this plasma reaches a Mach number of 0.5 on axis. The impact of the toroidal rotation on the equilibrium reconstructions of the plasma is however small: it acts to increase the radius of the magnetic axis by ≈1%, and lower the central safety factor by ≈5%. In comparison, corrections to make the pressure profile consistent with internal measurements such as charge exchange recombination spectroscopy and Thomson scattering have a much larger impact. In other work we compute the level of anisotropy from a TRANSP simulation of a neutral beam-heated MAST discharge. This shows a large level of anisotropy, with p⊥/p∥ ≈ 1.7, sufficient to boost the central safety factor by 15%. For this discharge, which is representative of many MAST discharges, the effect of anisotropy and consistent pressure profiles is more pronounced than the toroidal rotation of the plasma.

- Abstract
Magnetic confinement fusion science leads many other branches of plasma physics in its capacity to predict, interpret and understand the behaviour of energetic particle populations. The range of applications of this capability should be extended, for the mutual benefit of fusion research and of other branches of science. In this paper we review progress in applying fusion-derived techniques to one of the central questions of astrophysics: the origin of the cosmic ray population that is magnetically confined within our Galaxy. While it is widely believed that supernova remnant shocks provide the main acceleration sites for cosmic ray electrons and protons, the fundamental 'injection' problem remains. Namely, how particles are initially accelerated from ambient thermal to mildly relativistic energies, beyond which Fermi-type processes take over. The cosmic ray injection environment is magnetized and has many other physical resemblances to beam-heated and deuterium-tritium tokamak plasmas, in consequence, many of the same physical processes come into play. These include, for example, collective beam-plasma instability, resonant wave-particle coupling, and the stochasticization of particle orbits. A broad range of analytical and numerical techniques familiar in the fusion context has been successfully applied to the injection problem (see, for example, Dieckmann M.E. et al 2000 Astron. Astrophys. 356 377). Ideas from magnetic fusion have also been used to help design and interpret recent magnetized plasma experiments (Woolsey N.C. et al 2001 Phys. Plasmas 8 2439) using the high-power VULCAN laser, which address the cosmic ray injection problem from a new perspective.

Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and two-fluid quasi-neutral equilibria with azimuthal symmetry, gravity and arbitrary ratios of (non-relativistic) flow speed to acoustic and Alfvén speeds are investigated. In the two-fluid case, the mass ratio of the two species is arbitrary, and the analysis is therefore applicable to electron–positron plasmas. The methods of derivation can be extended in an obvious manner to several charged species. Generalized Grad–Shafranov equations, describing the equilibrium magnetic field, are derived. Flux-function equations and Bernoulli relations for each species, together with Poisson's equation for the gravitational potential, complete the set of equations required to determine the equilibrium. These are straightforward to solve numerically. The two-fluid system, unlike the MHD system, is shown to be free of singularities. It is demonstrated analytically that there exists a class of incompressible MHD equilibria with magnetic field-aligned flow. A special subclass first identified by S. Chandrasekhar, in which the flow speed is everywhere equal to the local Alfvén speed, is compatible with virtually any azimuthally symmetric magnetic configuration. Potential applications of this analysis include extragalactic and stellar jets, accretion discs, and plasma structures associated with active late-type stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent experiments in the Joint European Torus (JET) have provided evidence of sawtooth stabilization by fast ions arising from deuterium neutral beam injection (NBI). A possible theoretical basis for the interpretation of the observed sawtooth period behaviour is investigated and predictions are compared with experimental results, using a sawtooth period model developed to predict the sawtooth period in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). Unlike the case of ion cyclotron resonance heating, a detailed comparison between theory and experiment for NBI has not yet been made. In the model employed in this paper, a beam ion contribution to the internal kink potential energy has been incorporated, using a simple analytical expression valid in the limit of isotropic fast particles. This analytical expression has been found to compare well with detailed calculations performed with a hybrid kinetic/MHD code NOVA-K, using fast particle distribution functions computed with a plasma analysis code TRANSP. The beam ion contribution has been implemented in a transport code PRETOR and a few representative JET discharges have been analysed and modelled. The beam ion term is found to be sufficiently stabilizing to produce simulated sawtooth periods in agreement with the experimental results. Sawtooth periods computed without taking this term into account are much shorter than the measured periods. The model indicates that sawteeth are triggered in these JET discharges by excitation of the internal kink in the semi-collisional ion-kinetic regime: this was found by previous authors to be the sawtooth trigger most likely to be relevant to ITER. The role of beam ions in determining the sawtooth period in JET is thus found to be similar to the predicted role of alpha-particles in ITER.

This effort also requires improving several aspects of plasma operation for DTE2, such as real time control schemes, heat load control, disruption avoidance and a mitigation system (including the installation of a new shattered pellet injector), novel ion cyclotron resonance heating schemes (such as the threeions scheme), new diagnostics (neutron camera and spectrometer, active Alfvèn eigenmode antennas, neutral gauges, radiation hard imaging systems…) and the calibration of the JET neutron diagnostics at 14 MeV for accurate fusion power measurement. The active preparation of JET for the 2020 D–T campaign provides an incomparable source of information and a basis for the future D–T operation of ITER, and it is also foreseen that a large number of key physics issues will be addressed in support of burning plasmas.
