Abstract

A promising energy storage option is to inject and store heat generated from renewable energy sources in geothermal borehole arrays to form soil-borehole thermal energy storage (SBTES) systems. Although it is widely recognized that the movement of water in liquid and vapor forms through unsaturated soils is closely coupled to heat transfer, these coupled processes have not been considered in modeling of SBTES systems located in the vadose zone. Instead, previous analyses have assumed that the soil is a purely conductive medium with constant hydraulic and thermal properties. Numerical modeling tools that are available to consider these coupled processes have not been applied to SBTES systems partly due to the scarcity of field or laboratory data needed for validation. The goal of this work is to test different conceptual and mathematical formulations that are used in heat and mass transfer theories and determine their importance in modeling SBTES systems. First, a non-isothermal numerical model that simulates coupled heat, water vapor and liquid water flux through soil and considers non-equilibrium liquid/gas phase change was adopted to simulate SBTES systems. Next, this model was used to investigate different coupled heat transfer and water flow using nonisothermal hydraulic and thermal constitutive models. Data collected from laboratory-scale tank tests involving heating of an unsaturated sand layer were used to validate the numerical simulations. Results demonstrate the need to include thermally induced water flow in modeling efforts as well as convective heat transfer, especially when modeling unsaturated flow systems. For the boundary conditions and soil types considered, convective heat flux arising from thermally induced water flow was greater than heat transfer due to conductive heat flux alone. Although this analysis needs to be applied to the geometry and site conditions for SBTES systems in the vadose zone, this observation indicates that thermally induced water flow can have significant effects on the efficiency of heat injection and extraction.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: Social determinants of health (SDoH) contribute to health outcomes. We identified SDoH that were modified by critical illness, and the effect of such modifications on recovery from critical illness. DESIGN: In-depth semistructured interviews following hospital discharge. Interview transcripts were mapped against a pre-existing social policy framework: money and work; skills and education; housing, transport and neighbourhoods; and family, friends and social connections. SETTING: 14 hospital sites in the USA, UK and Australia. PARTICIPANTS: Patients and caregivers, who had been admitted to critical care from three continents. RESULTS: 86 interviews were analysed (66 patients and 20 caregivers). SDoH, both financial and non-financial in nature, could be negatively influenced by exposure to critical illness, with a direct impact on health-related outcomes at an individual level. Financial modifications included changes to employment status due to critical illness-related disability, alongside changes to income and insurance status. Negative health impacts included the inability to access essential healthcare and an increase in mental health problems. CONCLUSIONS: Critical illness appears to modify SDoH for survivors and their family members, potentially impacting recovery and health. Our findings suggest that increased attention to issues such as one's social network, economic security and access to healthcare is required following discharge from critical care.

Abstract

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is regarded as the most preventable cause of inpatient death in hospital settings globally. VTE can be prevented through the provision of non-pharmacological and/or pharmacological thromboprophylaxis following individualised risk screening. The Caprini risk assessment model (RAM) offers a validated and well-established approach for VTE risk assessment in medical inpatients. Literature findings describe a trend towards inappropriate and under-prescribing of thromboprophylaxis in this population. Together with concerns regarding clinicians’ perceived importance of VTE risk assessment, the need to clarify these aspects of practice is evident. Objectives: To describe VTE risk assessment and prophylaxis practices of medical practitioners in public sector hospitals in Western Cape Province, South Africa (SA). Methods: A retrospective, cross-sectional study design was employed in the medical wards of two district hospitals and one regional hospital in the Cape Town metropole, Western Cape. Medical folders of adult medical inpatients admitted between January and July 2020 were reviewed to assess VTE risk using the Caprini RAM. Thromboprophylaxis therapy prescribed and contraindications to chemoprophylaxis were also evaluated. Results: Of 380 patients included in the review, 51.6% were female, and the average age was 52.1 years (range 18 - 96); 21.3% had their weight recorded, while none had their height documented. 12. Geotechnical instructional centrifuge modeling of stress distribution

Abstract

This paper focuses on a new instructional module for the physical modeling of stress distributions within a layer of sand developed for use with an instructional centrifuge. This study is designed to help undergraduate geotechnical students to develop a deeper understanding of the assumptions behind the analytical solutions for the stress distribution under a square footing. A new centrifuge container was designed with the ability to measure the change in stress at a point within a sand layer due to the application of a static applied load at the surface of the layer. An experimental procedure was developed allowing 3 to 4 tests to be run during a typical 2 hour-long laboratory session. A template for an excel-based laboratory report is presented that can be used by undergraduate students during class to prepare the soil specimen and compare the experimental results with existing analytical solutions. The report also includes observational questions requiring the students to consider the influences of boundary effects and arching in centrifuge modeling. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

13. Centrifuge modelling of energy foundations in sand

Abstract

This paper presents the results from a series of centrifuge tests to understand the strain distribution in semi-floating energy foundations in dry Nevada sand during mechanical loading and foundation heating. In addition to the details of the model reinforced-concrete energy foundation, the results from 1-g thermo-mechanical characterization tests are presented. The centrifuge-scale tests involve application of an axial load to the head of the foundation (in load-control conditions) then circulation of a heat exchange fluid through embedded tubing to bring the foundation to a constant temperature. During this time, the axial strains are measured using embedded strain gages, and the soil and foundation temperatures and thermal and thermo-mechanical head displacements are monitored. Loading tests to failure were then performed on the foundations to characterize the impact of temperature on the load-settlement curve. The information from the tests permits definition of soil-structure interaction parameters for dry sands under realistic stress states. Different from previous studies on unsaturated silt, no change in ultimate side shear resistance was observed with increasing temperature. The thermal strains are relatively constant with depth and are close to free expansion. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group.

14. A novel centrifuge permeameter to characterize flow through low permeability strata

Abstract

A novel Centrifuge Permeameter (CP) system was designed to characterize and model seepage and reactive solute transport through low permeability materials and geological strata. A new CP module for the Broadbent G18 geotechnical centrifuge (2.0 m diameter), provides new capability for hydraulic conductivity (K) and transport testing of materials including drill cores, mine tailings and engineered barriers. By designing centrifuge models that maintain chemical equilibrium, reactive transport of solutes can be assessed within a reasonable experiment time at accelerated gravity. The K of minimally disturbed drill cores or porous materials having a diameter of 65-100 mm and a length of 20-200 mm can be measured using steady state flow, with a K detection limit currently within the order of 10-12 m/s. This paper presents K values as a function of depth below ground for drill core, and K as a function of effective porosity of reconstituted silica flour specimens. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Abstract

The increasing need for energy storage technology has led to a massive interest in novel energy storage methods. The energy geomembrane system is such a novel energy storage method. The concept of the system is briefly introduced, and a holistic numerical model of the system is presented. The model uses advanced finite-element techniques to model the energy storage system using fluid cavity elements. The developed geomembrane energy system is modelled with different constitutive models to represent the soil behaviour: a linear elastic model, a nonlinear Mohr-Coulomb model, and a hypoplastic constitutive model. The consequences of these different models on the results are studied. Hereby, the focus is the first inflation and deflation cycle of the system.

30. Astrometry with Hubble Space Telescope Fine Guidance Sensor number 3: Position-mode stability and precision

Abstract

We report results from a test exploring the long- and short-term astrometric stability of Hubble Space Telescope Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) #3. A test field was observed 40 times over 522 days to determine the precision and accuracy of FGS astrometry and to measure the character and magnitude of possible secular scale changes. We examine the astrometric data and the associated guide-star data to determine random errors. These data are also explored to find sources of systematic error. After correcting for some systematic effects we obtain a precision of 0.002 arcsec (2 mas) per observation (RSS of x and y). This is relative astrometry within a central 2.5 arcmin FGS field of view for any orientation. We find that the scale varies over time and confirm the sense of the trend with independent data. From the 40 observation sets we produce a catalog of an astrometry test field containing eight stars whose relative positions are known to an average 0.7 and 0.9 mas in x and y. One reference star has a relative parallax of 3.1 plus or minus 0.5 mas. Finally, we report that eleven observation sets acquired over 387 days produce parallaxes and relative positions with 1-mas precision.

Abstract

This study focuses on the load-deformation response of a heavily loaded rocking footing on geogrid-reinforced sand via centrifuge-model scale shake table tests. To mitigate issues observed with overturning failure and excessive settlement of shallow footings on unimproved ground, geogrid reinforcement can help control footing kinematics while maintaining the enhanced energy dissipation of a rocking footing. The scalemodel geogrid evaluated in this study was manufactured with 3D printing and placed at a depth equal to the footing width. Shake sequences induced controlled yielding, and the geogrid was observed to reduce settlement during rocking and preserved recentering under strong shaking.

Abstract

Current computational modeling methods for simulating blast and ejecta in soils resulting from the detonation of buried explosives rely heavily on continuum approaches such as Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) and pure Eulerian shock-physics techniques. These methods approximate the soil as a Lagrangian solid continuum when deforming (but not flowing) or an Eulerian non-Newtonian fluid continuum when deforming and flowing at high strain rates. These two extremes do not properly account for the transition from solid to fluid-like behavior and vice versa in soil, nor properly address advection of internal state variables and fabric tensors in the Eulerian approaches. To address these deficiencies on the modeling side, we are developing a multiscale multiphase hybrid Lagrangian particle-continuum computational approach, in conjunction with coordinated laboratory experiments for parameter calibration and model validation. This paper provides an overview of the research approach and current progress for this Office of Naval Research (ONR) Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) project. © The Society for Experimental Mechanics, Inc. 2014.

Abstract

This paper proposes a new relationship between thermal conductivity and degree of saturation of unsaturated soils, referred to as the thermal conductivity function (TCF). The new sigmoidal relationship between thermal conductivity and degree of saturation was developed so that all parameters have a physical meaning. After calibration of the model using data from the literature and comparison with other available TCFs, the parameters of the new TCF were related to those of the soil-water retention curves for the soils investigated in the calibration process. The linkage between the parameters of the TCF and SWRC indicates that the parameters reflect the point of air entry and pore size distribution of the soil, as well as the maximum and minimum thermal conductivity values encountered at saturated and dry conditions, respectively.
