In some dry contacts, such as in fretting, the relative motion between the two bodies generates particles of wear debris. These debris particles, mixed with external particles, form the third body. This third body plays several roles, and in particular allows transmitting the loads while accommodating velocity. The understanding of the influence of the third body flows within the contact is the issue of this thesis. Several lines of study are examined. Numerical simulations are conducted using the MELODY2D software which allows representing the third body as a set of deformable particles. Depending on the properties of these particles, the third body adopts different behaviours: plastic, granular or agglomerated. These flow regimes generate stresses, and damage that can cause wear. Other parameters have consequences on this wear: the thickness of the third body and the sliding direction. To analyse these numerical results, a mathematical tool is developed : the coherence. It allows to quantify the agglomeration phenomenon. The characterisation of the third body resulting from experimental tests is the subject of an experimental bench, designed on this occasion. Coupled with numerical simulations, it could allow determining the flow regimes of the third body in the contacts experimentally. These results open the way towards a consideration of the behaviour and flow regimes of the third body in the interface, and allow to consider a multiscale model of wear., Dans certains contacts secs, comme dans le cas du fretting, le mouvement relatif entre les deux corps génère des débris d’usure. Ces débris, mélangés à des particules extérieures, forment le troisième corps. Ce troisième corps joue plusieurs rôles, et permet notamment de transmettre les charges tout en accommodant les vitesses. La compréhension de l’influence des écoulements de troisième corps au sein du contact forme l’enjeu de cette thèse. Plusieurs axes d’études sont examinés. Des simulations numériques sont menées à l’aide de MELODY2D. Ce logiciel permet de représenter le troisième corps comme un ensemble de particules déformables. En fonction des propriétés de ces particules, le troisième corps adopte des comportements différents : plastiques, granulaire ou aggloméré. Ces régimes d’écoulement génèrent des contraintes, puis des endommagements susceptibles de causer de l’usure. D’autres paramètres ont des conséquences sur cette usure : l’épaisseur de troisième corps et le sens de glissement. Pour analyser ces résultats numériques, un outil mathématique est développé : la cohérence. Il permet de quantifier le phénomène d’agglomération. La caractérisation du troisième corps issu d’essais expérimentaux fait l’objet d’un banc expérimental, conçu à cette occasion. Couplé à des simulations numériques, il pourrait permettre de déterminer expérimentalement les régimes d’écoulement de troisième corps qui se trouvent dans les contacts. Ces résultats ouvrent la voie vers une prise en compte du comportement et des régimes d’écoulement du troisième corps dans l’interface, et permettent d’envisager un modèle multi-échelle de l’usure.

Flows of suspensions can be blocked when the suspended particles are densely packed. Here, we study suspensions of industrial rough silica particles in a Newtonian fluid. The rheological behavior with and without vibrations is study at a volume fraction above their jamming volume fraction. In the absence of vibrations, they have a solidlike behavior : they flow only above a yield stress. Particles are confined by the liquid interface, and the yield stress is of the frictional origin. When vibrations are applied, the yield stress vanishes to give rise to a liquidlike pseudo-Newtonian behavior at a low shear rate. As the shear rate is increased, we observe a shear thickening of the vibrated suspensions, eventually leading to shear-jamming. We show that this shear thickening can be tuned by changing the vibration energy injected into the system. We finally, propose a physical picture based on the competition between contact opening by vibration and contact formation by shear to account for these behaviors. In the framework of the Wyart and Cates model, vibrations can be seen as introducing a thermal-like repulsive force, yielding a critical stress proportional to the vibration stress introduced by Hanotin et al., L’écoulement de suspensions peut être bloqué lorsque les particules en suspension sont densément tassées. Dans ce manuscrit,nous étudions des suspensions de particules de silice rugueuses industrielles dans un fluide newtonien. Le comportement rhéologique avec et sans vibrations est étudié à une fraction volumique supérieure à leur fraction volumique de blocage notée Øm. En l’absence de vibrations, les suspensions se comportent comme un solide : elles ne s’écoulent qu’au-dessus d’une contrainte seuil. Les particules sont confinées par la tension de surface et le seuil de contrainte est d’origine frictionnelle. Lorsque des vibrations sont appliquées, la contrainte seuil disparaît pour donner lieu à un comportement pseudo-newtonien de type liquide à faible taux de cisaillement. Lorsque le taux de cisaillement augmente, on observe un rhéoépaississement des suspensions vibrées, conduisant finalement à du blocage par cisaillement. Nous montrons que la transition de rhéoépaisssissement peut être ajustée en modifiant l’énergie de vibration injectée dans le système. Nous proposons enfin une image physique basée sur la compétition entre l’ouverture de contact par vibration et la formation de contact par cisaillement pour rendre compte de ces comportements. Dans le cadre du modèle de Wyart et Cates, les vibrations peuvent être considérées comme introduisant une force répulsive de type thermique, produisant une contrainte critique proportionnelle à la contrainte de vibration introduite par Hanotin et al.

Seismic metamaterials have been the subject of much recent interest, with notable conceptual advances and the demonstration of possible full-scale effectiveness in earthquake protection. Here, through a fine analysis of the dispersion properties and behavior of resonators introduced in a laboratory scale setup, we propose a strategy for the design of an efficient metaseismic barrier. When positioned onto an unconsolidated granular layer, rigid masses of nontrivial shape become elastic resonators by coupling with the relatively soft propagation medium. Additionally, they affect the mechanical boundary conditions and subsurface medium properties through the added weight. We demonstrate that all these ingredients can be rationally combined to improve the shielding effect and control the seismic waves.

This paper is devoted to the investigation of the density sorting of grains using water jigging. Experiments achieved in a laboratory scale water jig for two initial binary bed configurations are studied and compared to numerical results. The vertical composition of the deposit is estimated after different number of water pulses to represent the sorting evolution in time. Simulations are based on a multiscale model in which the fluid is solved at a larger scale than the grain diameter using the finite element method, while the grains are considered as rigid bodies and solved using the nonsmooth contact dynamics. Key parameters are numerically varied and observed to determine the sensitivity of the process.

In order to model the behavior of geometarials under complex loadings, several researches have done numerous experimental works and established relative constitutive models for decades. An important feature of granular materials is that the relationship between stress and strain especially in elastic domain is not linear, unlike the responses of typical metal or rubber. It has been also found that the stress-strain response of granular materials shows the characteristics of cross-anisotropy, as well as the non-linearities. Besides, the stress-induced anisotropy occurs expectedly during the process of disturbance on soils, for example, the loads or displacements. In this work, a new model which is a combination of Houlsby hyperelastic model and elastoplastic Plasol model was proposed. This new model took into account the non-linear response of stress and strain in both elastic and plastic domain, and the anisotropic elasticity was also well considered. Moreover, the overflow problem of plastic strain in plastic part was calibrated by a proper integration algorithm. Later, new model was verified by using numerical method and compared with laboratory experiments in axisymmetric triaxial conditions. The comparison results showed a good simulation effect of new model which just used one single set of parameters for a specific soil in different confining pressure situations. Then the analysis of new model internal variable, i.e., pressure exponent, illustrated that the value of pressure exponent which corresponds to the degree of anisotropy had an obvious effect on the stress-strain response. Moreover, this kind of effect is also affected by the density and drainage condition of samples. Basing on new model, a safety factor which refers to the second-order work criterion was adopted and tested in axisymmetric model and actual slope model. It showed that the negative value or dramatic decreasing of global normalized second-order work occurs accompanying with a local or global failure with a burst of kinetic energy. This feature of second-order work can also be affected by the variable pressure exponent. At last, new model was also compared with an elastoplastic model which considers both anisotropic elastic and anisotropic dilatancy, i.e., modified SANISAND model. Both advantages and disadvantages were illustrated in the comparison results., Afin de modéliser le comportement des géométariaux sous des charges complexes, plusieurs études et travaux expérimentaux ont été réalisées afin d’établir des modèles constitutifs relatifs. Une caractéristique importante des matériaux granulaires est que la relation entre la contrainte et la déformation et ce même dans le domaine élastique n’est pas linéaire, contrairement aux réponses du métal. Il a également été constaté que la réponse contrainte-déformation des matériaux granulaires montre les caractéristiques de l’anisotropie induite, ainsi que les non-linéarités. En outre, l’anisotropie induite par la contrainte se produit pendant le processus de chargement sur les sols, par exemple, les charges ou les déplacements. Dans ce travail, un nouveau modèle qui est une combinaison de modèle hyperélastique Houlsby et modèle élastoplastique Plasol a été proposé. Ce nouveau modèle a pris en compte la réponse non linéaire de la contrainte dans le domaine élastique et plastique, et l’élasticité anisotrope a également été bien considérée. En outre, les problèmes de l’écoulement de la déformation plastique a été calibré par un algorithme d’intégration approprié. Plus tard, le nouveau modèle a été vérifié en utilisant la méthode numérique et comparé aux expériences de laboratoire dans des conditions triaxiales axisymmétriques. Les résultats de comparaison ont montré un bon effet de simulation du nouveau modèle qui a juste utilisé un seul ensemble de paramètres pour un sol spécifique dans différentes situations de contraintes. Ensuite, l’analyse de la nouvelle variable interne du modèle, c’est-à-dire l’exposant de pression, a montré que la valeur de l’exposant de pression qui correspond au degré d’anisotropie a eu un effet évident sur la réponse contrainte-déformation. De plus, ce type d’effet est également affecté par la densité et l’état de drainage des échantillons. En s’appuyant sur un nouveau modèle, un facteur de sécurité qui fait référence au critère de travail de deuxième ordre a été adopté et testé dans un modèle axisymétrique et un modèle de pente réel. Il a montré que la valeur négative ou la diminution spectaculaire du travail global normalisé de second ordre se produit lors d’une défaillance locale ou globale avec apparition d’énergie cinétique. Cette caractéristique du travail du second ordre peut également être affectée par l’exposant à pression variable. Enfin, un nouveau modèle a également été comparé à un modèle élastoplastique qui considère à la fois l’anisotropie élastique et la dilatation anisotrope, c’est-à-dire le modèle SANISAND modifié. Les avantages et les inconvénients ont été illustrés dans les résultats de comparaison.

This thesis is motivated by a research program between the LAMA (Mathematics, Univ. GustaveEiffel) and the Institut de Physique du Globe of Paris (Earth Sciences) on granular media and theirmathematical description.We consider here a continuous description: the material is described as a fluid with viscoplasticrheology, that allows us to model the transition between static (solid) states and mobile (liquid)states. Incompressible models have been used since the introduction of the so called µ(I) rheology(Jop et al. 2006). However such models do not represent accurately real flows, even in laboratoryexperiments. Recent studies indicate that volume variations, even if not significantly large, play akey role in the dynamics. Therefore compressible models have been recently considered (Barker etal. 2017). Although particular rheologies such as Bingham or Herschel-Bulkley models have beenoften considered in mathematical studies such as Malek et al. 2010, not much can be found ongeneral nonlinearities in terms of the trace and the norm of the strain rate tensor. We considerhere compressible models with general nonlinearities σ ∈ ∂F(D) where σ is the stress, D is thestrain rate and F is a convex viscoplastic potential. Under technical assumptions on F suchas subquadratic growth and superlinearity we prove the existence of solutions to the associatedvariational problem. This is obtained in the viscous as well as in the inviscid cases. We establishEuler-Lagrange characterizations of these solutions. No regularity is assumed on F, thus yieldstress rheologies are included. Numerical methods for viscoplastic laws have been classically used:augmented Lagrangian or regularization methods. However these methods were designed merelyfor Bingham or Herschel-Bulkley fluids, and moreover their cost is still too high for applicationsto real configurations. Here we consider an iterative but explicit method in the sense that thereis no linear system to solve, inherited from the minimizing of total variation functionals used inimaging (Chambolle, Pock 2011). It is applicable to any kind of nonlinearity, and includes a kindof projection on some convex sets. We prove the convergence of the method discretized in spacewith finite elements. Ici nous consid´erons unem´ethode it´erative mais explicite, dans le sens o`u il n’y a pas de syst`eme lin´eaire `a r´esoudre, h´erit´eede la minimisation de functionnelles de type variation totale utilis´ee en imagerie (Chambolle, Pock2011). Elle est applicable `a n’importe quelle forme de nonlin´earit´e, et fait intervenir une sorte deprojection sur des ensembles convexes. Nous prouvons la convergence de la m´ethode discr´etis´ee enespace avec des ´el´ements finis. Des tests num´eriques confirment les r´esultats th´eoriques.

We employ kinetic theory, extended to incorporate the influence of velocity correlations, friction and particle stiffness, and a model for rate-independent, elastic components of the stresses at volume fractions larger than a critical value, in an attempt to reproduce the results of discrete-element numerical simulations of steady, fully developed, dissipative, collisional shearing flows over and within inclined, erodible, fragile beds. The flows take place between vertical, frictional sidewalls at different separations with sufficient total particle flux so that differently inclined, erodible beds result. Numerical solutions of the spanwise-averaged differential equations of the theory and the associated boundary conditions are seen to be capable of reproducing profiles of stresses, solid volume fraction, average velocity and the strength of the particle velocity fluctuations, both in the rapid collisional flow above the bed and in the slower creeping flow within the bed. The indication is that extended kinetic theory has the unique ability to faithfully describe steady, inhomogeneous, granular shearing flows, ranging from dilute to extremely dense, using balances of momentum and energy and employing boundary conditions that are associated with the balances, with a small number of physically determined, microscopic parameters.

Numerical simulations at the pore scale are a way to study the behavior of multiphase flows encountered in many natural processes and industrial applications. In this work, liquid morphology and capillary action are examined at the pore-scale by means of the multicomponent Shan-Chen lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The accuracy of the numerical model is first contrasted with theoretical solutions. The numerical results are extended to complex microstructures beyond the pendular regime.The LBM has been employed to simulate multiphase flow through idealized granular porous media under quasi-static primary drainage conditions. LBM simulations provide an excellent description of the fluid-fluid interface displacement through the grains. Additionally, the receding phase trapped in the granular media in form of pendular bridges or liquid clusters is well captured. Unfortunately, such simulations require a significant computation time. A 2D model (Throat-Network model) based on analytical solutions is proposed to mimic the multiphase flow with very reduced computation cost, therefore, suitable to replace LBM simulations when the computation resources are limited. The approach emphasizes the importance of simulating at the throat scale rather than the pore body scale in order to obtain the local capillary pressure - liquid content relationships. The Throat-Network model is a starting point for the a hybrid model proposed to solve 3D problems. The hybrid model combines the efficiency of the pore-network approach and the accuracy of the LBM at the pore scale to optimize the computational resources. The hybrid model is based on the decomposition of the granular assembly into small subsets, in which LBM simulations are performed to determine the main hydrostatic properties (entry capillary pressure, capillary pressure - liquid content relationship and liquid morphology for each pore throat). Despite the reduction of computation time, it is still not negligible and not affordable for large granular packings. Approximations by the Incircle and the MS-P method, which predict hydrostatic properties, are contrasted with the results provided by LBM and the hybrid model. Relatively accurate predictions are given by the approximations., Les simulations numériques à l'échelle du pore sont fréquemment utilisées pour étudier le comportement des écoulements multiphasiques largement rencontrées dans phénomènes naturels et applications industrielles. Dans ce travail, la morphologie de structures liquides et l'action capillaire sont examinées à l'échelle des pores par la méthode de Boltzmann sur réseau (LBM) à plusieurs composants selon le modèle de Shan-Chen. Les résultats numériques obtenus sont en bon accord avec les solutions théoriques. Les simulations numériques sont étendues à microstructures complexes au-delà du régime pendulaire.La LBM a été utilisée pour modéliser l'écoulement multiphasique à travers un milieu poreux idéalisé dans des conditions de drainage primaire quasi-statique. Les simulations LBM ont fourni une excellente description du déplacement de l'interface fluide-fluide à travers les grains. Pendant le drainage, les simulations LBM sont capables de reproduire la déconnexion d'une phase dans le milieu granulaire sous la forme de ponts pendulaires ou structures liquides complexes. Malheureusement, le temps de calcul nécessaire pour ce type de simulations est assez élevé. Afin d’optimiser les ressources de calcul, nous présentons un modèle 2D (modèle Throat-Network) basé sur des solutions analytiques pour décrire l'écoulement biphasique à travers un ensemble de disques dans un temps de calcul très réduit, donc le modèle 2D est susceptible de remplacer les simulations LBM lorsque les ressources de calcul sont limitées. L'approche souligne l'importance de simuler le problème a l'échelle de la gorge du pore pour obtenir les relations volume - pression capillaire locales. Le modèle Throat-Network est un point de départ pour le modèle hybride proposé pour résoudre les problèmes en 3D. Le modèle hybride combine l’efficacité de l’approche réseau de pores et la précision du LBM à l’échelle des pores. Le modèle hybride est basé sur la décomposition de l’échantillon en petits sous-domaines, dans lesquels des simulations LBM sont effectuées pour déterminer les propriétés hydrostatiques principales (pression capillaire d'entrée, courbe de drainage primaire et morphologie du liquide pour chaque gorge du pore). Malgré la réduction significative des temps de calcul obtenus avec le modèle hybride, le temps n’est pas négligeable et les modélisations numériques d'échantillons de grandes tailles ne sont pas réalistes. Les approximations données par les méthodes Incircle et MS-P, qui prédisent les propriétés hydrostatiques, sont comparées à celles de LBM et du modèle hybride.

Dry slab snow avalanches represent a major natural hazard that is extremely difficult to manage. Attempts to model this phenomenon are hindered by the lack of a constitutive law that would describe the mechanical behaviour of snow on a material scale. In particular, relatively little is known on the failure and post-failure response of snow at high loading-rates. The highly fragile nature of the material in this deformation regimerenders experimental investigation difficult and complicates observation at the microstructural level.As an alternative to experiments, a Discrete Element Method-based numerical model of snow is developed in this thesis. The model enables us to simulate the response of snow to mechanical loading, while accounting for actual snow microstructure by using X-ray attenuation images of snow microstructure as input. Snow is considered as a cohesive granular material and an original methodology is developed in order to model the shape of each grain. Individual grains are bound into the snow matrix by modelling cohesion between neighbouring grains.The model is then used to explore the macroscopic mechanical response of different snow samples to mixed-mode loading. Three typical modes of failure are observed in all tested snow samples, depending on the level of applied normal stress: a localized shear failure at low normal stress (mode A), a shear failure-induced volumetric collapse at intermediate levels of normal stress (mode B), and a normal failure and collapse for high values of normal stress (mode C). The observed failure modes result in closed failure envelopes and no qualitative difference is observed between the mechanical responses of different snow types.The internal mechanisms that lead to volumetric collapse are further examined on the microscale. Force chain buckling is identified as a trigger of this material instability. Additionally, force chain stability appears to be controlled by the contacts between the force chain members and the surrounding grains. The failure in these contacts, which is evidenced in modes B and C, allows force chain buckling to develop and results in subsequent volumetric collapse., Les avalanches de plaque représentent un risque naturel majeur dont la prévision demeure très difficile. Le manque de lois constitutives fiables à l’échelle du matériau rend difficiles les tentatives de modélisation de ce phénomène. Plus spécifiquement, la réponse mécanique de la neige durant et après la rupture, dans des régimes de chargements rapides , demeure relativement méconnue. La nature particulièrement fragile du matériau au sein de ce régime de déformation rend ardue la réalisation d’expériences et complique l’observation à l’échelle microstructurale.Dans ce travail de thèse, un modèle numérique de neige fondé sur la Méthode des Éléments Discrets a été développé en tant qu’alternative aux expériences. Le modèle nous permet de simuler la réponse de la neige à des chargements mécaniques en tenant compte de la microstructure réelle du matériau grâce à l’intégration d’images acquises par microtomographie à rayons X en entrée du modèle. La neige est considérée comme un matériau granulaire cohesif, et une méthode originale a été développée afin de modéliser la forme de chaque grain. Les grains individuels sont ensuite assemblés pour reconstituer la matrice de la neige grâce à la prise en compte de lois de contact cohésives.Le modèle a été utilisé afin d’explorer la réponse mécanique macroscopique de différent échantillons de neige à un chargement mixte normal-cisaillant. Trois modes de rupture ont été observés dans tous les échantillons de neige testés, en fonction du niveau de contrainte normale appliquée : une rupture en cisaillement localisée pour des niveaux de contrainte normale faibles (mode A), un effondrement normal induit par rupture en cisaillement à des niveaux intermédiaires de contrainte normale (mode B) et un effondrement normal pour des valeurs de contrainte normale élevées (mode C). Ces différents modes de rupture produisent une enveloppe de rupture fermée dans l’espace des contraintes, ce pour les différents types de neige étudiés.Les mécanismes internes conduisant à l’effondrement normal des échantillons ont été étudiés plus en détail à l’échelle microscopique. Il a été montré que ce mode de rupture était associé à un mécanisme de flambement des chaînes de force. En outre, la stabilité de ces chaînes de force semble être contrôlée par les contacts entre les éléments des chaînes et les grains environnants. La rupture de ces contacts, observée dans les modes B et C, autorise le développement du flambement des chaînes de force et aboutit à l’effondrement volumique.

When a homogeneous stress is applied on a granular material, it first, shows a homogeneous strain and then, above a certain threshold, a heterogeneous strain. However, underlying plasticity mechanisms which trigger this behavior are not known very well. The aim of this thesis is to study how the plasticity organizes in order to understand the transition between a homogeneous strain towards a heterogeneous one. Experiments are carried out on a model amorphous medium consisting of an assembly of glass beads with an average diameter about one hundred microns. A biaxial compressive test in plan strain conditions is performed on the granular material and the organization of the plasticity is observed using the Diffusing Wave Spectroscopy (DWS) technique. During a unixial compression experiment, the plastic field can be decomposed in two components operating on two decoupled strain increment scales. The orientations of these two structures are determined quantitatively. As a result, we observe a slowly varying and coarse-grained part which concentrates along a macroscopic direction corresponding to the Mohr-Coulomb angle; and a fluctuating part that may be related to an Eshelby-like stress redistribution after a plastic rearrangement in an amorphous material. Otherwise, for the first time, we observe and characterize plastic events within shear bands. A qualitative analogy with earth seismicity is deduced., Lorsqu’il est soumis à une contrainte homogène, un matériau granulaire se déforme d’abord de manière homogène puis, passé un certain seuil, de manière hétérogène. Cependant, les mécanismes de plasticité sous-jacents à l’origine de ce comportement ne pas complètement compris. L’objectif de cette thèse est d’étudier l’organisation de la plasticité afin de comprendre la transition d’une déformation homogène vers une déformation hétérogène. Les expériences sont menées sur un matériau amorphe modèle constitué de billes de verre d’un diamètre moyen de l’ordre de la centaine de micromètres. Le matériau granulaire est soumis à un test biaxial en déformation plane et l’organisation de la plasticité est observée par spectroscopie de diffusion multiple de la lumière (DWS). Au cours d’une expérience de compression uni-axial, le champ de plasticité peut se décomposer en deux parties indépendantes et évoluant à des échelles de déformation différentes. Les orientations de ces deux structures sont déterminées quantitativement. On observe alors une partie lentement variable et moyennée dans le temps qui s’oriente selon un angle prédit par le modèle de Mohr-Coulomb ; ainsi qu’une partie fluctuante qui peut être décrite à partir de la théorie Eshelby décrivant la redistribution de la contrainte après un réarrangement plastic local dans un matériau amorphe. D’autre part, pour la première fois, des évènements plastiques ont pu être observés et caractérisés à l’intérieur des bandes de cisaillement. Une analogie qualitative avec la sismicité terrestre en est déduite.

Le frottement en 2D dans un modèle d'écoulements granulaires immergés est validé en comparant les résultats de simulations numériques à des expériences de tambour rotatifs. Une géométrie est ensuite proposée pour simuler la force de traînée sur un objet dans un écoulement granulaire immergé.

Notre approche exp?erimental utilise les graphiques spatio-temporels et l éanalyse de Fourier pour extraire les informations des photos, ce qui permettent une r?esolution des champs de meilleure que le diam`etre des grains individuels. Cela permet l é?etude de l éffet du polydispersit?e sur le largeur des bandes de cisaillement. [Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [ADD1_IRSTEA]Hydrosystèmes et risques naturels; International audience; The definition of an effective stress variable for idealized triphasic granular media as the contact stress arising from interparticle forces is examined through discrete element modelling computations in concert with appropriately derived analytical stress expressions based on homogenization. The latter take a more practical importance, in that they also circumvent the need for direct measurements of interparticle contact forces. Considering dry or pendular-regime conditions for slightly polydisperse dense and loose packings, the contact stress-strain behaviours in dry or wet conditions are compared along a variety of loading paths, depending on the level of plastic dissipation involved. The contact stress indeed emerges as an effective stress variable with a remarkable stress-strain character along contractant loading paths and for dense solid packings where the behaviour is close to be non-dissipative. Along more dilatant loading paths or for looser packings, plastic dissipation increases and the coincidence of the constitutive behaviour in both dry and triphasic conditions is restricted to the initial stages of the loading paths, limiting the applicability of the contact stress to the estimation of initial stiffnesses. The stark constitutive differences between the proposed effective stress and Bishop's stress are also highlighted.

International audience; The mechanical behaviour of granular materials is widely governed by microstructure reorganizations. This constant evolution of the microscale geometry is often taken into account directly at the macroscale within the plasticity context, and more particularly non-associated plasticity. In this paper we propose to revisit the non-associated plastic behaviour of granular materials with respect to material instability assessment in terms of the loss of positiveness of the second-order work. It is shown that large incremental plastic strain is a necessary condition for the existence of mechanical instability. The ability of a material to develop substantial plastic incremental strain is then related to the existence of rattlers, i.e., free particles that get jammed into force chains when existing contact networks fail to adapt to incremental loadings. This link between rattlers, plastic deformation and the vanishing of the second-order work is explicitly derived i) from the micro-formulation of the second-order work and ii) directly from discrete element simulations.

Motivated by the understanding of shape effects in granular materials, we numerically investigate the macroscopic and microstructural properties of anisotropic dense assemblies of frictionless polydisperse rigid pentagons in shear flow, and compare them with similar systems of disks. Once subjected to large cumulative shear strains their rheology and microstructure are investigated in uniform steady states, depending on inertial number I, which ranges from the quasistatic limit ([Formula: see text]) to 0.2. In the quasistatic limit both systems are devoid of Reynolds dilatancy, i.e., flow at their random close packing density. Both macroscopic friction angle [Formula: see text], an increasing function of I , and solid fraction [Formula: see text], a decreasing function of I, are larger with pentagons than with disks at small I, but the differences decline for larger I and, remarkably, nearly vanish for [Formula: see text]. Under growing I , the depletion of contact networks is considerably slower with pentagons, in which increasingly anisotropic, but still well-connected force-transmitting structures are maintained throughout the studied range. Whereas contact anisotropy and force anisotropy contribute nearly equally to the shear strength in disk assemblies, the latter effect dominates with pentagons at small I, while the former takes over for I of the order of 10-2. The size of clusters of grains in side-to-side contact, typically comprising more than 10 pentagons in the quasistatic limit, very gradually decreases for growing I.

Three-dimensional discrete numerical simulation is used to investigate the properties of close-packed frictionless granular assemblies as a function of particle polydispersity and shape. Unlike some experimental results, simulations show that disordered packings of pinacoids (eight-face convex polyhedron) achieve higher solid fraction values than amorphous packings of spherical or rounded particles, thus fulfilling the analogue of Ulam's conjecture stated by Jiao and co-workers for random packings [Y. Jiao and S. Torquato, Phys. Rev. E $\textbf{84}$, $041309$ ($2011$)]. This seeming discrepancy between experimental and numerical results is believed to lie with difficulties in overcoming interparticle friction through experimental densification processes. Moreover, solid fraction is shown to increase further with bidispersity and peak when the volume proportion of small particles reaches $30\%$. Contrarywise, substituting up to $50\%$ of flat pinacoids for isometric ones yields solid fraction decrease, especially when flat particles are also elongated. Nevertheless, particle shape seems to play a minor role on packing solid fraction compared to polydispersity. Additional investigations focused on the packing microstructure confirm that pinacoid packings fulfill the isostatic conjecture and that they are free of order except beyond $30$ to $50\%$ of flat or flat \& elongated polyhedra in the packing. This order increase progressively takes the form of a nematic phase caused by the reorientation of flat or flat \& elongated particles to minimize the packing potential energy. Simultaneously, this reorientation seems to increase the solid fraction value slightly above the maximum achieved by monodisperse isometric pinacoids, as well as the coordination number. Finally, partial substitution of elongated pinacoids for isometric ones has limited effect on packing solid fraction or order., 12 figures, 12 pages

We aim to perform a multi-scale study that relates the grain scale behaviour to the macroscopic erosion process. In particular, we study the influence of the flow conditions and the inter-particle contact forces intensity on the erosion kinetic.

Enwrapping liquid droplets with hydrophobic particles allows the manufacture of so-called "liquid marbles" [Aussillous and Quéré Nature (London) 411, 924 (2001); NATUAS0028-083610.1038/35082026Mahadevan Nature (London)411, 895 (2001)NATUAS0028-083610.1038/35082164]. The recent intensive research devoted to liquid marbles is justified by their very unusual physical and chemical properties and by their potential for various applications, from microreactors to water storage, including water pollution sensors [Bormashenko Curr. Opin. Colloid Interface Sci. 16, 266 (2011)COCSFL1359-029410.1016/j.cocis.2010.12.002]. Here we demonstrate that this concept can be successfully applied for encapsulating and protecting small gas pockets within an air environment. Similarly to their liquid counterparts, those new soft-matter objects, that we call "gas marbles," can sustain external forces. We show that gas marbles are surprisingly tenfold stronger than liquid marbles and, more importantly, they can sustain both positive and negative pressure differences. This magnified strength is shown to originate from the strong cohesive nature of the shell. Those interesting properties could be exploited for imprisoning valuable or polluted gases or for designing new aerated materials.

The present paper sheds new light on ongoing drawbacks of three classical algorithms dedicated to initial contact detection between overlapping convex polyhedra, (i) Cundall’s common plane, (ii) Nezami’s fast common plane and (iii) Gilbert-Johnson-Keerthi’s algorithm (GJK). Solutions to these drawbacks are suggested and implemented into revised versions of those three algorithms, which are further benchmarked for accuracy and speed using nine overlapping contact situations. The benchmarking results show that the revised version of GJK, called GJK - TD , and Nezami (revised) return values of the contact normal components and overlap depth which are identical to machine precision, whereas Cundall (revised) results differ beyond the ninth decimal place. Furthermore, for a given contact situation, GJK-TD returns those values within a few tens of microseconds on average, whereas Nezami (revised) and Cundall (revised) are respectively 6 and 65 times more computationally intense. It is believed that the robustness and efficiency of GJK-TD will boost its use into DEM simulations, all the more that this versatile algorithm may easily be customized to detect contact between convex polyhedra and spheroid particles.

Granular materials exhibit a wide spectrum of constitutive features when submitted under various loading paths. Developing constitutive models which succeed in accounting for these features has been challenged by scientists for decades. A promising direction for achieving this can be the multi-scale approach. Through this approach, the constitutive model is formulated by relating material’s macroscopic properties to their corresponding microstructure properties.This thesis proposes a three-dimensional micro-mechanical model (the so-called 3D-H model) taking into account an intermediate scale (meso-scale) which makes it possible to describe a variety of constitutive features in a natural way. The comparison between experimental tests and numerical simulations reveals the predictive capability of this model. Particularly, several simulations are carried out with different confining pressures and initial void ratios, based on the fact that the critical state is quantitatively described without requiring any critical state formulations and parameter. The model is also analyzed from a microscopicview, wherein the evolution of some key microscopic parameters is investigated.Then, a 3D multi-scale approach is presented to investigate the mechanical behavior of a macroscopic specimen consisting of a granular assembly, as a boundary value problem. The core of this approach is a multiscale coupling, wherein the finite element method is used to solve a boundary value problem and the 3D-H model is employed to build the micro constitutive relationship used at a representative volume element scale. This approach provides a convenient way to link the macroscopic observations with intrinsic microscopic mechanisms. Plane-strain biaxial loading conditions are selected to simulate the occurrence of strain localization. A series of tests are performed, wherein distinct failure patterns are observed and analyzed. A system of shear band naturally appears in a homogeneous setting specimen. By defining the shear band area, microstructural mechanisms are separately investigated inside and outside the shear band. Moreover, a second-order work directional analysis is performed by applying strain probes at different stress-strain states along drained biaxial loading paths. The normalized second order work introduced as an indicator of an unstable trend of the system is analyzed not only on the macroscale but also on the microscale.Finally, a second order work analysis in application to geotechnical problems by using the aforementioned multiscale approach is presented. The multiscale approach is used to simulate a homogeneous and a non-homogeneous BVP, opening a road to interpret and understand the micro mechanisms hiding behind the occurrence of failure in geotechnical issues. This multiscale approach utilizes an explicit-dynamic integral method so that the post-peak failure can be investigated without requiring over-sophisticated mathematical ingredients. Thus, by switching the loading method from a strain control to a stress control at the limit state, the collapse of the system can be reflected in an abrupt increase of kinetic energy, stemming from the difference between both internal and external second-order works., Les matériaux granulaires présentent une large gamme de lois de comportement lorsqu'ils sont soumis à différents chemins de chargement. Le développement de modèles constitutifs permettant de rendre compte de ces caractéristiques a été une préoccupation constante de nombreux chercheurs depuis des décennies. Parmi les différentes options possibles, les approches par changement d’échelle semblent prometteuses. Dans ces approches, le modèle constitutif est formulé en reliant les propriétés macroscopiques du matériau aux propriétés micro-structurelles correspondantes.Cette thèse propose un modèle micromécanique tridimensionnel (le modèle H-3D) prenant en compte une échelle intermédiaire (méso-échelle). Il permet ainsi de décrire de manière naturelle un grand nombre de caractéristiques constitutives des matériaux granulaires non cohésifs. La comparaison entre essais expérimentaux et simulations numériques révèle la capacité prédictive de ce modèle. En particulier, des simulations réalisées avec différentes pressions de confinement et différents rapports de vide initiaux ont permis de démontrer la capacité du modèle à rendre compte quantitativement de l'état critique sans nécessiter d’équation spécifique et de paramètre d'état critique. Le modèle est également analysé à l’échelle microscopique, où l'évolution de certains paramètres microscopiques clés est présentée.Une approche multi-échelle 3D est ensuite présentée afin d’étudier le comportement mécanique d'un échantillon macroscopique constitué d'un assemblage granulaire, en tant que problème aux conditions limites. Le cœur de cette approche est un couplage multi-échelle, où la méthode des éléments finis est utilisée pour résoudre le problème aux conditions limites et le modèle H-3D est utilisé pour calculer la loi de comportement à l’échelle d’un volume élémentaire représentatif. Cette approche fournit un moyen pratique de relier les observations macroscopiques avec les mécanismes microscopiques intrinsèques. Des conditions de chargement biaxiaux en déformations planes sont appliquées pour simuler le phénomène de localisation des déformations. Une série de tests est effectuée, où différents motifs de rupture sont observés et analysés. Un système de bande de cisaillement apparaît naturellement dans un spécimen initialement homogène. En définissant la zone de la bande de cisaillement, les mécanismes microstructuraux sont étudiés séparément à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur de celle-ci. En outre, une analyse directionnelle de travail du second ordre est effectuée en appliquant des petits incréments de contrainte à différents états de contrainte-déformation sur des chemins de chargement biaxiaux drainés. Le travail de second ordre normalisé, introduit comme un indicateur d’instabilité du système, est analysé non seulement à l’échelle macroscopique mais aussi à l’échelle microscopique.Enfin, une analyse du travail de second ordre appliquée à des problèmes géotechniques et utilisant l'approche multi-échelle développée dans cette thèse est présentée. L'approche multi-échelle est utilisée afin de simuler des problèmes aux conditions limites homogènes et non homogènes, offrant ainsi la possibilité d’interpréter et de comprendre les micro-mécanismes qui à l’origine des phénomènes de rupture dans les problèmes géotechniques. Cette approche multi-échelle utilise un schéma numérique d’intégration dynamique-explicite afin de pouvoir étudier la rupture post-pic sans avoir à recourir à des outils mathématiques trop sophistiqués. Ainsi, en changeant le type de condition de chargement de déplacement à contrainte lorsque le système atteint son état limite, son effondrement se traduit par une augmentation soudaine de l'énergie cinétique découlant de la différence entre les travaux internes et externes du second ordre.

Une approache combinant la méthode des élements discrets (DEM) et expériences techniques (essai oedométrique et microtomographie aux rayons X (XRCT)) est proposée pour observer le comportement mécanique des matériaux granulaires mouillés (des billes de verre mouillées) en état très lâche sous le chargement extérieur. Une observation expérimentale combinant l'essai oedométrique et XRCT est premièrement présentée. La réponse plastique du materiau réel (des billes de verre) est illustrée avec des certaines valeurs de densité initiale très faible. Le comportement à l'échelle du grain de ce matériau est puis caractérisé en utilisant à l'aide de microtomographie aux rayons X et d'essais mécaniques in-situ. Une méthode pour détecter des structures sphériques qui ont obtenu depuis des images de la tomographie est proposée. Ensuite, les propriétés micro-structurales sont analysées et calculées avec les données des sphères détectés. Ce matériau simplifié donne une meilleure compréhension du comportement à macro-échelle des sols granulaires mouillés basée sur leur caractérisation micro-structurale. La simulation numérique a permis de prévoir précisément en 3D la réponse plastique d'assemblages très lâches de billes de verre modélisé soumis à une compression isotrope/ oedométrique. Ce maériau a été préparé avec la présence d'une petite quantité d'un liquide interstitiel qui contrôle à capillaire ménisque and des forces attractives. Les réponses plastiques le long des courbes de compression sont présentées dans les cas avec et sans des résistance au roulement/ pivotement en contacts. L'effet du grain polydispersité en taille a aussi mentionné. L'évaluation de la microstructure et transmission de force le long de la courve de compression est également caractérisé. Finalement, nous comparons les prévisions des résultats expérimentals avec ceux de la simulation numérique. Nos comparaisons montrent que les prévisions de l'expérience sont sous-estimées pour celles de la DEM. Néanmoins, cette approache dans ce travail également fournit une caractérisation complète de la réponse plastique et du comportement à l'échelle du grain de sol granulaire mouillé à l'état très lâche An approach combining the Discrete Element Method (DEM) and experimental techniques (oedometric compression test and X-ray Computed Tomography (XRCT)) is proposed to observe the mechanical behavior of wet granular material, modeled as frictional spherical glass beads, in very loose state under growing of applied external force. An experimental observation combining one-dimensional compression test and XRCT is first presented. The plastic responses of real material (spherical glass beads) are depicted with different values of very low initial densities. The grain-scale behavior of this material is then characterized by using the XRCT and in-situ compaction test. We propose a method to detect the spherical structures from the 3D tomography images. Microstructure properties of the loose system are then analyzed and computed from the detected spherical structures. This simplified material gives further a better understanding of the macroscale behavior of wet granular soils based on their microstructure characterization. The DEM simulation then allowed us to predict accurately in 3D the plastic response of very loose assemblies of modeled wet beads to an isotropic/ oedometric compression in the presence of a small amount of an interstitial liquid, which gives rise to capillary menisci and attractive forces. The plastic responses along the compression curves are then shown in particular without and with the appearance of rolling/ pivoting resistances in contacts and also the effect of size polydispersity. The evaluation of microstructure and force transmission along the compression curve is also characterized. Finally, we compare the predictions of the experimental results with the DEM simulations results. Our comparisons show that the predictions of experiments are underestimated for the DEM simulations. Nevertheless, the combined approach in this work also provides an comprehensive characterization of the plastic and grain-scale compression behavior of wet granular soil at very loose state

Granular materials consist of dense pack of solid grains and a pore-filling element such as a fluid or a solid matrix. The grains interact via elastic repulsion, friction, adhesion and other surface forces. External loading leads to grain deformations as well as cooperative particle rearrangements. The particle deformations are of particular importance in many industry applications and research subjects, such as powder metallurgy and soil mechanics. The response of granular materials to external loading is complex, especially in case when failure occurs: the mode of the failure can be diffuse or localized, and the development of specimen pattern can be drastically different when the specimen can no longer sustain external loading. In this thesis, a thorough numerical analysis based on a discrete element method is carried out to investigate the macroscopic and microscopic behavior of granular materials when a failure occurs. The numerical simulations include the vanishing of the second-order work instability criterion to detect failure. Furthermore, it is proved that the vanishing of second-order work coincides with the change from a quasi-static regime to a dynamic regime in the response of the specimen. Then, microstructure evolution is investigated. Evolution of force-chains and grain-loops are investigated during the deformation process until reaching the failure. The second-order work is once again taken into account to elucidate the local aspect that governs the failure, taking place at the particle scale. The collapse of the discrete specimen when it turns from quasi-static to dynamic regime is accompanied with a burst in kinetic energy. This rise of kinetic energy occurs when the internal stress cannot balance with the external loading when a small perturbation is added to the boundary, resulting in a difference between the internal and external second-order works of the system. The mesostructures have a symbiosis relationship with each other and their evolution decides the macroscopic behavior of the discrete system. The distribution of the collapse of force-chain correlates with the vanishing of the second-order work at the grain scale. The mesostructures play an important role in the instability of granular media. The second-order work can be used as an effective criterion to detect the instability of the system on both the macroscale and microscale (grain scale), Les matériaux granulaires se composent de grains solides et d’un constituant remplissant les pores, tel qu'un fluide ou une matrice solide. Les grains interagissent au travers de répulsions élastiques, auxquelles s’ajoutent des mécanismes de friction, d’adhérence et d'autres forces surfaciques. La sollicitation externe conduit à la déformation des grains ainsi qu’à des réarrangements de particules. Les déformations des milieux granulaires sont d'une importance capitale dans de nombreuses applications industrielles et dans la recherche, comme par exemple dans la métallurgie des poutres ou en mécanique des sols. La réponse des matériaux granulaires sous chargement externe est complexe, en particulier lorsqu’une rupture se produit: le mode de rupture peut être diffus ou localisé, et l’aspect de peut varier drastiquement lorsque celui-ci ne peut plus soutenir la charge externe. Dans le cadre de cette thèse, une analyse numérique basée sur une méthode des éléments discrets est réalisée pour étudier les comportements macroscopique et microscopique des matériaux granulaires à la rupture. Ces simulations numériques prennent en compte le critère du travail du second ordre afin de prédire la rupture. De plus il est montré que l’annulation du travail du second ordre coïncide avec la transition d’un régime statique vers un régime dynamique. Ensuite, le comportement matériaux granulaires est analysé à l’échelle micro-structurelle. L’évolution des chaines des forces et des cycles des grains est étudiée durant le processus de déformation jusqu’à la rupture. Le travail du second ordre est également pris en compte pour examiner l'aspect local qui régit la rupture à l’échelle locale. L'effondrement de l'échantillon discret quand il passe du régime quasi-statique vers le régime dynamique est accompagné d'une bouffée d'énergie cinétique. Cette augmentation de l'énergie cinétique est générée lorsque la contrainte interne ne permet pas d'équilibrer la force externe sous l’action d’une petite perturbation, ce qui entraîne une différence entre les travaux du second ordre interne et externe du système. Les mésostructures démontrent une relation symbiotique entre elles, et leur évolution gouverne le comportement macroscopique du système discret. La distribution de l'effondrement des chaînes de forces est parfaitement corrélée avec l’annulation du travail du second ordre à l'échelle de particules. Les mésostructures jouent un rôle important dans l'instabilité des milieux granulaires. Le travail du second ordre peut être utilisé comme un critère pertinent et robuste pour détecter l'instabilité du système que ce soit à l'échelle macroscopique ou microscopique (échelle de particule)

Adding product into the mixer exerts a strong and rapid impact during concrete mixing. Experimental data obtained from a planetary mixer in a full-scale concrete plant under laboratory conditions show that the state of mixture progress with mixing time is well described by the mixing power evolution. More specifically, a reliable method for detecting the time corresponding to the transformation of a mixture from a cohesive granular material into a granular paste (i.e. the so-called “transition time”), through use of a mixing power measurement, will be presented herein. Moreover, once this transition has been achieved, mixing power consumption will be related to mixture rheology and then to mixer geometry by means of a simplified hypothesis. This equation can also be obtained via a dimensionless analysis. Lastly, it will be shown that mixture behavior beyond the transition point is well fitted by a hyperbolic equation. The corresponding mixing power evolution can then be predicted by the level of power at this transition time. These results are suitable for application to online process monitoring.

The fragmentation of materials is a phenomenon which arises in several natural and industrial systems, and for a wide range of scales. From an industrial point of view, the crushing process is very important in the production of aggregates, which are often required to meet high criteria in terms of size and shape. However, the phenomena behind fracture of materials are still not completely understood. The discrete element methods allow to model interactions at the scale of the material micro-structure, by means of simple models. One of the advantages of this kind of methods is the natural way the crack initiates and propagates in the sample, without any need of a crack model. A discrete element model allowing to describe cohesion inside the material composed of particles of arbitrary shapes has been developed in this work. Numerical simulations have been conducted for two kinds of samples describing both cemented and plain materials. The results obtained have shown the ability of the numerical model to reproduce the macroscopic behavior of the fracture of a brittle material. The developed model has been applied to study the influence of the positioning of external contact points on the effective strength of a cylindrical shaped grain. The results have demonstrated an increase of the required force to break the grain depending on the position of the contacts. An experimental study has confirmed the numerical results. D'un point de vue industriel, la fragmentation est d'une grande importance dans la production de granulats de carrière, qui sont soumis à des critères stricts en termes de tailles et de formes. Néanmoins, les phénomènes à l'origine de la fracture des matériaux restent encore aujourd'hui mal maîtrisés. Les méthodes aux éléments discrets permettent une modélisation des interactions à l'échelle de la microstructure du matériau. Un des avantages de ces méthodes est que la fissure apparaît et se propage dans l'empilement de manière naturelle, sans qu'il soit nécessaire de la décrire par modèles de fissuration.Un modèle aux éléments discrets permettant de représenter la cohésion au sein d'un matériau composé de particules de formes quelconques a été développé durant cette thèse. Des simulations numériques ont été effectuées pour deux types d'empilements représentant soit des matériaux cimentés, soit des matériaux “pleins”. Les résultats obtenus ont permis de confirmer que ce modèle est capable de reproduire le comportement macroscopique de la rupture de matériau fragile. Le modèle a été ensuite appliqué à l'étude de l'influence du positionnement de points de contact externes sur la résistance d'une particule cylindrique. Une étude expérimentale d'impact a été menée et a permis de confirmer ces résultats. Enfin, nous avons appliqué notre approche à la reconstruction de grains issus de données tomographiques.

This Ph.D. thesis is about the development and formalization of a six-dimensional tomography method, for the reconstruction of local orientation in poly-crystalline materials. This method is based on a technique known as diffraction contract tomography (DCT), mainly used in synchrotrons, with a monochromatic and parallel high energy X-ray beam. DCT exists since over a decade now, but it was always employed to analyze undeformed or nearly undeformed materials, described by “grains” with a certain average orientation. Because an orientation can be parametrized by the used of only three num- bers, the local orientation in the grains is modelled by a six-dimensional space X6 = R3 ⊗ O3, that is the outer product between a three-dimensional real- space and another three-dimensional orientation-space. This means that for each point of the real-space, there could be a full three-dimensional orientation- space, which however in practice is restricted to a smaller region of interest called “local orientation-space”. The reconstruction problem is then formulated as a global minimisation prob- lem, where the reconstruction of a single grain is the solution that minimizes a functional. There can be different choices for the functionals to use, and they depend on the type of reconstructions one is looking for, and on the type of a priori knowledge is available. All the functionals used include a data fidelity term which ensures that the reconstruction is consistent with the measured diffraction data, and then an additional regularization term is added, like the l1-norm minimization of the solution vector, that tries to limit the number of orientations per real-space voxel, or a Total Variation operator over the sum of the orientation part of the six-dimensional voxels, in order to enforce the homogeneity of the grain volume. When first published, the results on synthetic data from the third chapter high- lighted some key features of the proposed framework, and showed that it was in principle possible to extend DCT to the reconstruction of moderately de- formed materials, but it was unclear whether it could work in practice. The following chapters instead confirm that the proposed framework is viable for reconstructing moderately deformed materials, and that in conjunction with other techniques, it could also overcome the limitations imposed by the grain indexing, and be applied to more challenging textured materials., Cette thèse de doctorat introduit un modèle et un algorithme six-dimensions pour la reconstruction des orientations cristallines locales dans les matériaux polycristallins. Le modèle s’applique actuellement aux données obtenues avec un rayonnement synchrotron (faisceau parallèle et monochromatique), mais il est également possible d’envisager des extensions aux instruments et sources de laboratoire (polychromatique et divergent). Le travail présenté est principalement une extension de la technique connue sous le nom de “Diffraction Contrast Tomography” (DCT) qui permet la reconstruction de la forme et de l’orientation cristalline des grains dans des matériaux polycristallins (avec certaines restrictions concernant la taille et le nombre total de grains ainsi que la mosaicité intragranulaire).

A new averaging method linking discrete to continuum variables of granular materials is developed and used to derive average balance equations. Its novelty lies in the choice of the decomposition between mean values and fluctuations of properties which takes into account the effect of gradients. Thanks to a local homogeneity hypothesis, whose validity is discussed, simplified balance equations are obtained. This original approach solves the problem of dependence of some variables on the size of the averaging domain obtained in previous approaches which can lead to huge relative errors (several hundred percentages). It also clearly separates affine and nonaffine fields in the balance equations. The resulting energy cascade picture is discussed, with a particular focus on unidirectional steady and fully developed flows for which it appears that the contact terms are dissipated locally unlike the kinetic terms which contribute to a nonlocal balance. Application of the method is demonstrated in the determination of the macroscopic properties such as volume fraction, velocity, stress, and energy of a simple shear flow, where the discrete results are generated by means of discrete particle simulation., Comment: Accepted forpublication in Physical Review E

The prediction of boulder trajectory and the design of protection structures are particularly two main interests of rockfall engineering. The prediction of boulder trajectory largely depends on the bouncing of the boulder, and the design of protection structures, such as embankments, are closely related to the impact force on the boulder.Based on this background, the thesis deals with the interaction between a boulder and a granular medium as well as the bouncing of a boulder on a granular medium, through numerical modelling based on discrete element method. The objective of the thesis is to identify and quantify the mechanisms that governs the bouncing of boulder and the load transfer inside the impacted medium. The main contents include three parts: DEM modelling of the impact process, global bouncing of the boulder and micromechanical behaviour of the impacted medium.The classical contact law implemented with rolling resistance to consider particle shape effects calibrated based on quasi-static triaxial tests is used to model the dynamic impact process. The boulder is modelled as a single sphere with an incident velocity, the medium is modelled as an assembly composed of poly-disperse spherical particles. The numerical impact modelling is validated in terms of impact force, impact duration, penetration depth by experiments from literature.Bouncing of the boulder is investigated together with the energy propagation process inside the impacted medium. The strength of the medium during impact is represented by elastic strain energy, while the strength of the medium is not persistent since the increase of elastic strain energy is followed by the increase of kinetic energy and energy dissipation, as well as the decrease of the coordination number. Boulder's bouncing occurrence obtained based on 3D simulations shows that three impact regimes exist, which is consistent with the results of citet{Bourrier_2008}. In addition, comparison between 2D and 3D bouncing occurrence diagrams shows that the positions and shapes of bouncing occurrence diagrams shift due to the different strength and energy dissipation properties. Based on the two aspects of investigations, the relation between the bouncing of the boulder and the energy propagation inside the medium is discussed.The micromechanical behaviour of the impacted system is investigated by focusing on force chain mechanisms. The force chain network in the impacted medium is characterized based on particle stress information. The aim is to find the role of force chains in the strength and the microstructure of the medium. Investigations of the impact force on the boulder by impacting samples composed of different grain sizes shows that sample composed of big grains resulting in a larger impact force, longer force chains compared with the medium thickness, and large percentage of long age force chains. In addition, the spatial and temporal distribution of force chains are investigated and the results show that the strength of the medium under impact is built by chain particles located between the boulder and the bottom boundary, and the force chain propagation in the lateral direction of the medium plays a secondary role. Moreover, the investigation of force chain buckling mechanisms indicates that, triggered by the relative movements between the chain particles, the increase of buckling number is related to the decrease of impact force on the boulder as well as the increase of kinetic energy and energy dissipation inside the medium., La prédiction de trajectoire de bloc et la conception de structures de protection sont deux des questions principales de l'ingénierie des chutes de pierres. La prédiction de la trajectoire d'un bloc dépend en grande partie des rebonds de ce bloc tandis que la conception de structures de protection, comme des remblais, est étroitement liée à la force d'impact sur le bloc.En se basant sur ce contexte, la thèse traite aussi bien de l'interaction entre un bloc et un milieu granulaire que des rebonds d'un bloc sur un milieu granulaire, en utilisant une modélisation numérique par la méthode des éléments discrets. L'objectif de la thèse est d'identifier et de mesurer les mécanismes qui contrôlent le rebond du bloc et le transfert de charge à l'intérieur du milieu impacté. Le contenu principal comprend trois parties: la modélisation DEM du processus d'impact, le rebond du bloc et le comportement micromécanique du milieu impacté.La loi de contact classique est utilisée pour modéliser le processus d'impact. Elle est mise en œuvre avec une résistance aux roulements pour considérer les effets de forme des particules et est calibrée par des tests triaxiaux quasi-statiques. Le bloc est modélisé par une sphère avec une vitesse d'incident tandis que le milieu est modélisé par un assemblage de particules sphériques poly-dispersées. La modélisation numérique de l'impact est validé en termes de force d'impact, de durée d'impact et de profondeur de pénétration par des expériences de la littérature.Le rebond du bloc et le processus de propagation d'énergie à l'intérieur du milieu impacté sont examinés ensemble. La résistance du milieu pendant l'impact est représentée par l'énergie de tension élastique. La résistance du milieu n'est pas constante car l'augmentation d'énergie de tension élastique est suivie par l'augmentation d'énergie cinétique, la dissipation d'énergie et par la diminution du nombre de coordination. L'occurrence du rebond du bloc obtenue avec des simulations 3D montre que trois régimes d'impact existent, ce qui est en accord avec les résultats de citet{Bourrier_2008}. De plus, la comparaison entre les diagrammes d'occurrence de rebond 2D et 3D montre que les positions et les formes des diagrammes d'occurrence de rebond changent en raison de résistances et de dissipations d'énergie différentes. En se basant sur les deux aspects de l'étude, la relation entre le rebond du bloc et la propagation d'énergie à l'intérieur du milieu est discutée.Le comportement micromécanique du système impacté est examiné en se focalisant sur les mécanismes des chaînes de force. Le réseau de chaînes de force dans le milieu impacté est caractérisé à partir des tensions entre les particules. L'objectif est d'identifier le rôle des chaînes de force dans la force d'impact sur le bloc et dans la microstructure du milieu. En étudiant la force d'impact sur le bloc avec des impacts sur des échantillons de grains de tailles différentes montre que l'échantillon composé de grands grains a une plus grande force d'impact, des chaînes de force plus longues comparées à l'épaisseur du milieu ainsi qu'un grand pourcentage de chaînes de force avec une longue durée de vie. De plus, l'étude de la distribution spatiale et temporelle des chaînes de force montre que la résistance du milieu pendant l'impact est portée par les particules des chaînes situées entre le bloc et la base du milieu impacté et que la propagation des chaînes de force dans la direction latérale joue un rôle secondaire. Enfin, l'étude des mécanismes du flambage des chaînes de force indique que, provoqués par les mouvements entre les particules de la chaîne, l'augmentation de nombre de flambages est liée à la diminution de la force d'impact sur le bloc ainsi qu'à l'augmentation de l'énergie cinétique et de la dissipation d'énergie à l'intérieur du milieu.

This thesis deals with hydromechanical couplings in soils and more particularly focusing on the capillary collapse phenomenon. Although thoroughly studied at macroscopic scale in fine soils, the mechanisms governing capillary collapse in granular soils have been less observed.At first, the results concern the capacity to reproduce and to observe the phenomenon of capillary collapse at the scale of the specimen, called also the macroscopic scale.Thus, one of the first important objectives of this project concerned the preparation method of the specimens, which have to be loose enough to observe this phenomenon. The collapse potential, determined here by the one-dimensional collapse test, decreases with the mechanical stress. Moreover, when the quantity of water is controlled, incremental strains of specimens arise whatever the imbibition dynamic.To complement existing data, an experimental program was carried out using X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT), a relevant tool to obtain 3D informations at grain scale. In combination with Volumetric Digital Image Correlation (V-DIC), X-ray CT also makes it possible to get information at a mesoscopic scale, at which the use of continuum mechanics still remains relevant. In this work, both microscopic and mesoscopic analyses have been carried out on a partially saturated sand subjected to gradual controlled imbibition in an oedometric cell.Local heterogeneities of strains and water contents appear during the imbibition, which are principally explained by the effect of gravity and by an inhomogeneity of the initial density.However, in spite of the existence of those localisations, by comparing the analyses at the mesoscopic and at the macroscopic scale, we show that measurements performed at the scale of the specimen are representative of the local behaviour of the material; Le travail présenté dans cette thèse vise à apporter une compréhension fine des couplages hydromécaniques et plus particulièrement du phénomène d'effondrement capillaire. L'utilisation de matériaux granulaires modèles observés à petites échelles grâce au microtomographe à rayons X constitue le point de départ de cette étude. Les résultats portent dans un premier temps sur la capacité à reproduire et observer le phénomène d'effondrement capillaire à l'échelle de l'éprouvette, appelée aussi échelle macroscopique. Une des premières problématiques importantes de ce projet a donc porté sur la reconstitution d'éprouvettes suffisamment lâches permettant d'observer le phénomène effondrement. Le potentiel d'effondrement, alors mesuré au simple œdomètre sur ces éprouvettes reconstituées, décroit avec la charge mécanique appliquée. En contrôlant le volume d'eau au cours de l'imbibition, les éprouvettes sont sujettes à une succession d'incréments de déformation rapides et ceci quelle que soit la dynamique de mouillage. En parallèle, l'utilisation de la technique d'analyse non destructive par microtomographie aux rayons X nous a permis de quantifier à une échelle mésoscopique (échelle de quelques grains), l'évolution de matériaux granulaires sous chargement hydrique et mécanique. Cela a été possible par l'utilisation de la technique de corrélation d'images numériques (DIC) associée à des outils d'analyse adaptés aux matériaux non saturés. Ces outils révèlent que l'hétérogénéité locale des déformations et des teneurs en eau augmente au cours de l'imbibition principalement à cause de l'effet de la gravité sur la répartition de l'eau dans l'éprouvette. L'hétérogénéité initiale des éprouvettes induite par la méthode de préparation est aussi identifiée. Cependant, malgré la présence de ces hétérogénéités, nous montrons que les mesures réalisées à l'échelle de l'éprouvette restent représentatives du comportement mésoscopique du matériau au cours de l'effondrement

International audience; Ce travail de recherche a pour objectif d'étudier le comportement au cisaillement des matériaux granulaires homogènes et hétérogènes par l'essai triaxial de révolution. Les travaux sont réalisés sur des billes de verre et comportent à la fois des essais triaxiaux de laboratoire et des simulations numériques en DEM (Discret Element Method). D'un point de vue expérimental, les essais sont tout d'abord réalisés sur des échantillons homogènes (billes de verre monodisperses). Ensuite, on étudie des systèmes des mélanges de billes bidisperses pour représenter un cas hétérogène. D'un point de vue numérique, une condition limite cylindrique paroi rigide, basée sur la formule de Lamé, est implémentée et une série de procédures est proposée pour modéliser l'essai triaxial. Les résultats numériques et expérimentaux sont comparés. Le modèle numérique permet de reproduire de manière satisfaisante la courbe déviatorique dans toutes les conditions expérimentales utilisées. De plus, il permet d'étudier l'influence des paramètres micromécaniques sur le comportement global des matériaux.

International audience; Granular materials are special materials, from the continuum-mechanical viewpoint, in the sense that they possess a clear microstructure of grains and intergrain contacts. In addition, the grains have translational as well as rotational degrees of freedom. Here a micromechanical expression is formulated for the average displacement gradient tensor in terms of the grain displacements and rotations for the two-dimensional case. It is based on a tessellation of the granular assembly into closed loops, along whose boundary the displacement field is defined in terms of the grain displacements and rotations. An important consideration for this expression is that it must satisfy the surface-additivity property, according to which the average displacement gradient of a combined two-dimensional surface is determined by the average displacement gradients of the constituent surfaces (and weighted by their areas). The developed micromechanical expression is verified by comparing its results with the macroscopic deformation as determined from the displacements at the boundary. Results of DEM simulations of a biaxial test (where the average rotation is equal to zero) and a shear test (where the average rotation is not equal to zero) are employed for this verification. The developed micromechanical expression for the displacement gradient is subsequently used to study deformation patterns in a complex case of a biaxial test where a shear band is formed.

/ Ce mémoire d'HDR présente une synthèse de mes travaux et résultats ayant trait, au sens large, à la modélisation des écoulements à surface libre de fluides complexes. Je m'intéresse essentiellement au cas de coulées gravitaires de fluides à seuil, qui peuvent représenter génériquement des laves torrentielles, des coulées de boue ou certains types d'avalanches de neige. Je discute les différentes approches permettant de modéliser la propagation de ces écoulements, et présente les études que nous avons initiées pour tester et évaluer la pertinence de ces modèles.

Wall slip is an important phenomenon for the flow of granular materials in chutes and channels. The appearance of a slip velocity at the wall critically affects wall stresses and flow profiles, and particularly the total flowrate. In this work we show, through numerical simulations and experiments, that the global slip phenomenon at a wall has peculiar features which deviate significantly from simple sliding behavior. At first we present experimental data for the vertical chute flow which highlight that wall slip depends on many operating and system variables such as flow rate, material properties, wall properties. Secondly, we resume a large campaign of numerical data performed in 2D with polygonal particles, and try to analyse the effect of material properties, contact parameters, operating variables, different flow configurations, on the slip phenomenon. The numerical campaign allowed to identify the main parameters affecting the wall slip behavior of a numerical model of granular flow, providing the ingredients for the creation of a framework for the description of wall slip.

Nous étudions la rhéologie d'un ensemble de grains sphériques et frottants, par la simulation numérique, à l'échelle des grains, d'écoulements de cisaillement sous une contrainte normale P contrôlée, en présence d'un liquide interstitiel. En faible teneur, ce liquide se présente sous forme de ménisques intergranulaires qui transmettent des forces capillaires attractives ; s'il sature l'espace intergranulaire, on s'intéresse alors à l'écoulement de Stokes de la suspension dense ainsi constituée, où dominent les forces visqueuses. Les assemblages de grains secs constituent un système de référence aux propriétés mécaniques bien connues, en particulier l'approche de l'état critique de la mécanique des sols dans la limite quasi-statique. L'effet des ménisques capillaires qui joignent les grains en présence d'un liquide en faible saturation (régime pendulaire) est étudié pour les taux de cisaillement allant du régime quasi statique au régime inertiel. La rhéologie est caractérisée par le frottement interne apparent, la compacité de l'assemblage, les différences de contraintes normales et diverses variables internes, fonctions de deux paramètres de contrôle adimensionnés : le nombre inertiel I et la pression réduite P*, qui compare les forces de confinement à l'adhésion dans les contacts. Notre étude concerne les états homogènes, ce qui exclut les états de cisaillement localisés observés à faible P*, de l'ordre de 0,1. Le coefficient de frottement interne augmente de 0.35 (cas sec) à 0.9 environ pour P*=0.4, tandis que la compacité décroît de 0.59 à 0.52. L'important effet des forces capillaires sur la rhéologie, sensible pour des P* de plusieurs unités, est relié à la texture anisotrope des contacts et des ponts liquides. Lorsque P* décroît, nombre de contacts cohésifs sont maintenus pour des intervalles de déformation de plusieurs unités, survivant aux effets de rotation et de cisaillement de l'écoulement, et forment des amas percolants dans le système entier. Les résultats sont modérément sensibles à la saturation dans le régime pendulaire, mais fortement affectés par l'hystérèse de la conformation des ménisques. En présence de forces visqueuses et non plus capillaires, une version simplifiée de la dynamique stokésienne est adoptée dans laquelle les forces de lubrification entre proches voisins, supposées dominantes, sont les seules interactions hydrodynamiques. La rhéologie est fortement influencée par les contacts intergranulaires directes, qu'autorise la coupure à courte distance de la singulérité de lubrification du fait de la rugosité de surface des particules. Le même état critique que celui des grains secs est approché dans la limite quasi-statique. Nous discutons de lois rhéologiques exprimées en fonction du nombre visqueux qui remplace alors le nombre inertiel, et de la divergence de la viscosité effective à l'approche de la compacité critique en écoulement permanent, ou de la compacité maximale des assemblages aléatoires pour les configurations isotropes désordonnées We numerically simulate the shear flow of dense assemblies of 3D frictional spherical grains under a fixed normal stress P in steady-state, either in the presence of a small amount of an interstitial liquid, which gives rise to capillary menisci and attractive forces, or in the fully saturated state, when the mechanical properties of suspensions in Stokes flow are controlled by hydrodynamic and contact forces. Dry grain assemblies are used as a reference system for which the rheological properties - in particular the approach to the critical state ? are rather well known and can be measured with good accuracy. A non-saturating wetting fluid creates capillary attractive intergranular forces, the effects of which on the rheology are investigated in the pendular state, with shear rates ranging from quasistatic to inertial regimes. The system behavior is characterized by the dependence of internal friction coefficient, solid fraction, normal stress differences and internal state parameters on two dimensionless control parameters: the inertial number, I and the reduced pressure, P*, comparing confining forces to contact tensile strength. We focus on steady homogeneous flows, excluding localized flow patterns which we observe to occur for low P* (of order 0.1). The apparent internal friction coefficient increases to 0.9 in the quasistatic limit for P*=0.4, from its dry value 0.35, while solid fraction decreases from 0.59 to 0.52. We relate the significant effect of capillary forces on the macroscopic behavior of the system, up to P* values of several unities, to fabric anisotropy parameters of contact and distant interactions. As P* decreases, many cohesive contacts are observed to survive the tumbling motion associated to the shear flow, and their average age exceeds the reciprocal shear rate. Corresponding clusters of grains with enduring capillary bonds gather a large proportion of grains and percolate through the sample. The results are shown to be moderately sensitive to saturation within the pendular range, yet rather strongly affected by the hysteretic nature of liquid bridges. In the presence of viscous forces, assuming lubrication effects to dominate the hydrodynamic interactions, we adopt a simplified version of the (overdamped) Stokesian dynamics approach, in which hydrodynamic interactions only couple close neighbours. Rheological properties are strongly influenced by direct intergranular contacts and friction, which are permitted due to a very small distance lubrication cutoff modeling surface asperities. The same critical state as in the dry case is approached in the quasistatic limit. We discuss expressions of rheological laws involving the viscous number instead of the inertial number, and the divergence of effective viscosities in steady flow and in isotropic random suspensions as either the critical state or the random close packing solid fraction are approached

International audience; This paper aims at investigating the influence of grading on the undrained behavior of granular materials. Series of undrained triaxial tests were carried out with two different materials, glass balls and Hostun sand. For each material, samples with different gradings and similar relative densities were prepared. Experimental results show that the undrained shear strength decreases when the coefficient of uniformity Cu=d60/d10Cu=d60/d10 increases from 1.1 to 20. The conditions of instability for the selected granular materials were also analyzed, based on the sign of the second-order work during undrained triaxial loading. The results demonstrate a significant influence of the grading: increasing the coefficient of uniformity heightens the potential of static liquefaction and the materials become more unstable. Furthermore, numerical tests using the three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) were conducted on assemblies of spheres. The DEM inter-particle parameters were derived from the experimental test results on glass balls. The DEM simulations showed similar behaviors compared to experimental results and confirmed the influence of the grain size distribution on the stress–strain relationship and instability phenomena.; Cet article vise à étudier l'influence de l'étalement granulométrique sur le comportement non drainé des matériaux granulaires. Des séries d'essais triaxiaux non drainés ont été réalisés sur deux matériaux différents, des billes de verre et du sable Hostun. Pour chaque matériau, des échantillons de différentes granulométries et de densités relatives similaires ont été préparés. Les résultats expérimentaux montrent que la résistance au cisaillement diminue lorsque le coefficient d'uniformité Cu=d60/d10Cu=d60/d10 augmente de 1,1 à 20. Les conditions d'instabilité pour les matériaux granulaires sélectionnés ont également été analysées, sur la base du signe du travail du second ordre au cours d'un chargement triaxial non drainé. Les résultats montrent une influence significative de l'étalement granulométrique : l'augmentation du coefficient d'uniformité accroît le potentiel de liquéfaction statique et les matériaux deviennent plus instables. En outre, des essais numériques en utilisant la méthode des éléments discrets en trois dimensions (DEM) ont été effectués sur des assemblages de sphères. Les paramètres inter-particules DEM ont été calculés à partir des résultats d'essais expérimentaux sur des billes de verre. Les simulations DEM ont montré des comportements similaires comparés aux résultats expérimentaux et confirment l'influence de l'étalement granulométrique sur la relation contrainte–déformation et les phénomènes d'instabilité.

Small quantities of liquid in a granular material control the flow dynamics as well as the triggering and jamming phases. In order to study this problem, some experimental collapse tests conducted in a rectangular box were reproduced with a 1:1 scale numerical model using the Discrete Element Method. In simulations the effect of the capillary bridges has been investigated implementing a mid-range attractive force between particles based on the minimum energy approach. Also a bonding-debonding mechanism was incorporated in the algorithm and the volume of each sessile drop on the particle surface was considered during its motion. The influence of some variables was investigated with respect to the final slope profiles and the runout lengths: the initial liquid content, the particle size, the solid density, the liquid surface tension, and the liquid-solid contact angle. Also the crucial effect of the confinement walls on the collapse phenomenon was investigated: wet particles adhere to the lateral walls providing a higher flow resistance in comparison to the same material in dry conditions. It was observed that particles with largest path-lengths are localized near the movable wall at a middle-height of the initial column sample. Other particles at the surface moves in a rigid way especially if they were wet and with a low solid density. The “fidelity” of each particle with respect to the nearest neighbours was evaluated allowing to recognize the emergence of clusters of particles and rigid parts, to extract the failure surface and to localize where debonding mechanisms concentrate in the wet case.

The objectives of this study are the experimental characterisatino of the stick-slip instabilities in a model granular material and the identification of relevant control parameters. As monodisperse glass beads are subjected to drained triaxial compression tests, five macroscopic parameters characterize the stick-slip phenomenon: the deviator drop, the jump in volumetric contraction, the intermittence of the axial strain, Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio. The stick-slip events simultaneously affect the deviator stress and the volumetric strain. While the global material behavior is that of a loose sand, gradually contracting and hardening as it approaches its large strain critical state, its response in the “stick” phases immediately following the “slip” instabilities is similar to that of dense, dilatant sands, with a unique, linear stress-dilatancy relationship. Stick-slip events disappear beyond a critical axial strain rate, depending on the confining stress and on the grain diameter. The Young modulus associated to wave propagation varies with the confining stress according to a power law. The quasi-elastic modulus measured at the beginning of the stick phase is constant inside the elastic domain, as well as the Poisson ratio. The evolution of grain size and shape after one or several triaxial tests is monitored by laser granulometry and image analysis. The gradual vanishing of stick-slip events, on repeating the tests, is likely related to the global decreasing trend of average particle volume and to the formation of non-spherical objects, apparently by some phenomenon analogous to sintering., Cette étude a pour objectifs la caractérisation expérimentale des frottements saccadés dans les matériaux granulaires modèles constitués des billes de verre monodisperses en compression triaxiale drainée et l'identification des paramètres de contrôle. Cinq paramètres macroscopiques caractérisent ces frottements saccadés : la chute de déviateur et la contraction volumique, l'intermittence de déformation axiale, le module d'Young et le coefficient de Poisson. Les frottements saccadés affectent simultanément le déviateur et la déformation volumique. Le comportement macroscopique est globalement contractant tandis que le matériau tend vers un état limite critique en grandes déformations, à la manière des sables lâches. Cependant il présente localement, dans les phases de blocage qui suivent immédiatement les ruptures temporaires, le comportement dilatant des sables denses, qui obéit à une relation contrainte-dilatance linéaire et unique. Les frottements saccadés disparaissent au-delà d'une vitesse critique d'écrasement axial, qui dépend de la contrainte de confinement et de la taille des grains. Le module d'Young dynamique par propagation d'ondes varie avec la contrainte de confinement selon une loi de puissance. Le module d'Young quasi-élastique au départ des phases de blocage est constant à l'intérieur du domaine élastique, de même que le coefficient de Poisson. Le suivi par granulométrie laser et par analyse d'images des matériaux après un ou plusieurs essais triaxiaux permet de suivre l'évolution de la taille moyenne et de la forme des grains. Tandis que les instabilités par saccade disparaissent suite à un certain nombre d'essais, on observe, simultanément à une légère diminution du volume moyen, l'apparition progressive de populations d'objets non sphériques par une fusion des grains analogue au frittage.

Within shear bands in sands, deformation is largely non-affine, stemming primarily from buckling of well-known force chains and also from vortex-like structures. In the spirit of current trends toward multiscale modeling, understanding the links between these mesoscale deformational entities and corresponding macroscale response will form the basis for the next generation of sand behavioral models and may also aid in efforts to understand jamming–unjamming transitions in dense granular flows in general. Experimental methods to quantify and characterize such subscale kinematics, in particular in real sands, will play critical roles in these efforts. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is a fast growing experimental technique to nondestructively measure surface displacements from digital images. Here, DIC has been employed to identify and characterize the development of vortex structures inside shear bands formed in dense sands during plane strain compression. A rigorous assessment of the DIC method has been performed, in particular for subscale behavioral characterization in unbonded granular solids, and guidelines are offered for accurate implementation. While DIC systematically overestimates shear band thickness, a methodology has been devised to compensate for this overestimation. Shear band thickness for four different uniform sands were found to range between 6 and 9 grain diameters, and for a well-graded sand between 8 and 9.5 grain diameters. These determinations agree with visual inspections of grain kinematics from the image data, as well as recent theoretical predictions.

We systematically investigate the incremental response of various equilibrium states of dense 2D model granular materials, along the biaxial compression path (\sigma 11 < \sigma 22, \sigma 12 = 0). Stress increments are applied in arbitrary directions in 3- dimensional stress space (\sigma 11, \sigma 22, \sigma 12). In states with stable contact networks we compute the stiffness matrix and the elastic moduli, and separate elastic and irreversible strains in the range in which the latter are homogeneous functions of degree one of stress increments. Without principal stress axis rotation, the response abides by elastoplasticity with a Mohr-Coulomb criterion and a non-associated flow rule. However a nonelastic shear strain is also observed for increments of \sigma 12, and shear and in-plane responses couple. International audience; Under certain loading conditions, instability in loose sand can develop at a shear stress level much lower than the critical state failure line. To analyse these types of problems, we adopt the micromechanical approach developed earlier for the modelling of granular material behaviour. The stress-strain relationship for a granular assembly is determined by integrating the behaviour of the inter-particle contacts in all orientations. The constitutive model is applied to simulate undrained triaxial and constant-q tests on loose sand. Numerical simulations are compared to experimental results in order to evaluate the model's ability to predict the different modes of instability of the granular assembly. With the model we have also analysed instability at inter-particle level to observe how it is connected to instability at the assembly level.; Dans certaines conditions de chargement, des ruptures par instabilité peuvent prendre naissance dans les sables lâches pour des niveaux de contraintes très nettement inférieurs à ceux correspondant à la plasticité parfaite. La relation contrainte-déformation macroscopique est obtenue en intégrant le comportement défini au niveau du contact inter-granulaire. Le modèle est utilisé pour simuler des essais non drainés et des essais à déviateur constant sur un sable lâche. Les résultats de la simulation à l'échelle macroscopique sont comparés à des résultats expérimentaux de façon à apprécier la capacité du modèle à prédire la naissance de l'instabilité sur ces chemins particuliers. Une analyse à l'échelle des différents plans de contact inter-granulaire a également été entreprise afin de relier les conditions d'instabilité aux différentes échelles.

Ground reinforcement with rigid piles is a technique of foundation involving a granular fill placed between the work and the supporting soil. Load transfer mechanisms that appear in the granular material allow to increase the effort transmitted to the inclusions located within the improved subsoil and consequently to reduce settlements. The lack of regulation and design methods related to this soil improvement technique led to the set up of a national research project called ASIRi. The essential step for a better understanding of the behaviour of such soil reinforcements is to investigate the complex load transfer mechanisms that take place in the granular material. In order to make light on these mechanisms, an experimental study of the trap-door problem involving granular layer in plain strain conditions were carried out. In a second step, numerical modelling of this solicitation by means of Discrete Element Method is presented. Then, a numerical and parametric study focused on granular fills on rigid vertical piles, based on realistic works layouts, and testing the influence of several technical solution on load transfer mechanisms., Le renforcement de sols par inclusions rigides est une technique de fondation dans laquelle un matelas granulaire de transfert de charge est mis en \oe uvre entre l'ouvrage et le sol support. Les reports de charges se développant dans le matelas permettent d'augmenter la charge de l'ouvrage transmise au réseau d'inclusions mis en place dans le sol support. Une importante réduction des tassements peut ainsi être obtenue. L'absence de recommandations relatives au dimensionnement et à la réalisation de de ce type de renforcement de sol a conduit à la mise en place du projet national ASIRi. Une des étapes essentielles à la compréhension du fonctionnement de ce type d'ouvrage réside dans les mécanismes de transfert de charge agissant dans le matelas granulaire qui demeurent mal connus et complexes. Afin d'apporter des éléments de compréhension relatifs à ces mécanismes, une étude expérimentale mettant en jeu des matelas granulaire soumis à une sollicitation simplifiée a été réalisée sur modèle réduit. Dans un second temps, l'étude expérimentale a été complétée par des modélisations numériques utilisant la Méthode des Éléments Discrets. Enfin, une étude paramétrique et numérique portant sur le comportement de matelas de transfert de charge sur inclusions rigides est proposée. Elle se base sur des configurations d'ouvrages usuelles et permet d'évaluer l'influence de différentes solutions techniques sur les reports de charge.

International audience; A strain-rate dependent rheology for granular materials with a constant cohesion, is proposed and applied in the case of a flow down an inclined channel. The results obtained show that a plug flow zone appears below the free surface and show that low cohesion may affect drastically the flow behaviour when the inclination of the channel is close to the repose angle. These results give also a basic understanding of h stop , the depth of the remaining granular layer on an inclined channel, treating dilatancy like a cohesion-like behaviour.

This work deals with experimental and numerical investigations on particles flow through a packing of larger spheres.We built an experimental device to study lateral dispersion and the mean transit time of a blob of particles through a porous medium. Particularly, we determined the dependence of the mean transit time on the number of particles, on particle size and on the height of the porous medium. We also characterized the dependence of the lateral dispersion coefficient on the number of particles moving in the porous structure.Then, we developed numerical simulation models based on "Event-Driven" and "molecular dynamic of soft spheres" methods. Those allowed us to supplement the experimental study by analyzing the influence of various additional parameters. The access inside the porous medium allowed a finer analysis of particles dispersion.Finally, we approached the possibility of using the spontaneous percolation phenomenon to produce a mixer. Thanks to the numerical tool, we carried out and characterized mixtures of particles of different sizes. We showed that this process proves to be a simple and effective method to obtain homogeneous mixtures of particles., Cette thèse a pour objet l'étude expérimentale et numérique de l'écoulement de particules dans un empilement de sphères plus grosses. Un dispositif expérimental a été mis au point pour étudier la dispersion latérale et le temps moyen de séjour d'un paquet de particules dans un milieu poreux. Nous avons en particulier déterminé la dépendance du temps moyen de transit en fonction du nombre de particules en écoulement, de la taille des particules et de la hauteur du milieu poreux. Nous avons également caractérisé la dépendance du coefficient de dispersion latéral vis-à-vis du nombre de particules transitant dans la structure poreuse.Dans un deuxième temps, nous avons développé des modèles de simulations numériques basés sur les méthodes "Event-Driven" et "dynamique moléculaire de sphères molles". Ceux-ci nous ont permis de compléter l'étude expérimentale en analysant l'influence de divers paramètres supplémentaires. L'accès à l'intérieur du milieu poreux a permis une analyse plus fine de la dispersion des particules. Enfin, nous avons abordé la possibilité d'utiliser le phénomène de percolation spontanée pour réaliser un mélangeur. Grâce à l'outil numérique, nous avons réalisé et caractérisé des mélanges de particules de tailles différentes. Nous avons alors montré que ce procédé s'avère être un moyen simple et efficace pour obtenir des mélanges homogènes de particules.

Internationale.; International audience; Nous présentons ici une étude par simulation numérique discrète de l'écoulement dense d'un mélange bidisperse de disques sur un plan incliné rugueux, restreinte aux écoulements stationnaires et uniformes, dans lesquels une ségrégation par taille s'est établie. On a alors une stratification du matériau avec une couche de petits grains près du socle, une couche superficielle de gros grains et une couche intermédiaire mélangeant les deux espèces. De la mesure des profils de vitesse, de contraintes et de compacité, nous déduisons une loi de frottement locale pour la rhéologie d'un tel mélange, avec une dépendance approximativement linéaire du coefficient de frottement effectif en fonction d'un certain nombre inertiel, nombre sans dimension qui généralise la grandeur introduite pour la rhéologie des systèmes quasi-monodisperses, à condition de prendre en compte le diamètre moyen des grains (pondéré par la masse).

Internationale.; International audience; Nous étudions par simulation numérique (de type « éléments discrets») les propriétés géométriques et élastiques d'assemblages de grains sphériques obtenus par différents protocoles de préparation : compression isotrope de « gaz granulaires », vibration de configurations denses, dépôt sous gravité. Nous montrons que le nombre de coor- dination des contacts portant les forces, inaccessible à l'expérience, peut varier indépendamment de la compacité et constitue le paramètre déterminant pour les propriétés élastiques qui, elles, sont mesurables en laboratoire. La comparaison de valeurs numériques et expérimentales pour les modules élastiques des billes de verre, encore partielle, donne un bon accord.
