The chapter gives a detailed overview of recent labour market trends across eight major world regions. The chapter discusses each one of them, highlighting the divergent trends both within and across regions. In particular, the continuous improvement in some major advanced economies contrasts sharply with the ongoing difficulties in many European countries and the first signs of slowdown in key emerging markets.

The chapter analyses factors influencing medium-term employment growth, highlighting the importance of labour force participation, occupational changes and income inequality as key determinants. The chapter also discusses the role of manufacturing employment for overall job creation and challenges that the early decline in manufacturing employment in a series of emerging economies poses for their future economic and social development.

The main concern of this presentation is that while the overall feminization of international migration is increasing, the vulnerability of women migrants to discrimination, exploitation and abuse is also likely to increase. Then we need to discuss what can be done to improve protection and alleviate discrimination. The presentation will focus on the following issues: Why are migrant women more vulnerable? What are the main forms of discrimination, exploitation or abuse? How can discrimination, exploitation and abuse be redressed?2 As such the presentation intends to focus on women migrant workers in the destination country and who have migrated voluntarily. This paper explores the economic and social impact of the growing participation of young urban women in the workforce in Amman, Jordan. The writer argues that there is a new 'stage' in women's life-course in Jordan: single, employed adulthood. This is expanding young women's horizons, and challenging relationships between women and men, and between different generations, at all levels of society, including within the household. However, traditional values concerning family honour are challenged by this, and are sometimes being reinforced through new forms of control over young women.

This paper examines gender and age differences in the labor supply of households in Jordan, and the impact of young women’s employment on gender and generation relations. The objective of the study is to address the issues of gender and generation as factors influencing accessibility to labor markets, and to provide a broader understanding of female employment by exploring age-related factors. Empirically, the study looks at the disproportionate workforce participation of young urban single women in Amman, Jordan, and argues that this generation of working women is evidence of a new stage in the lives of Jordanian women: single employed adulthood. It looks at a specific “time” in the social and economic lives of households and individuals. Within this context, the paper constructs a profile of employment characteristics of adult household members to explore the intersecting influences of age and gender and the specific positions of young women. It then addresses how normative gender and generation hierarchies within households respond to these phenomena of young women’s work, their prolonged single status, and their expanding horizons.

There is an increasing visibility of young urban working women in Amman, Jordan. As compared to previous generations, this group is experiencing a new life cycle trajectory of single employed adulthood. Based on qualitative interviews with young women, this paper will reflect on their experiences and perceptions regarding work, social status and marriage.

One important aspect of civil society is that which revolves around employer-worker relations as well as the extent to which workers or employers participatein economic policies or in the various issues related to their interests and concerns.
