Abstract Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is an incurable B-cell neoplasm characterized by an aggressive behavior, short responses to conventional therapies and SOX11 overexpression, which is associated with aggressive disease features and inferior clinical outcome of patients. Oxidative stress is known to induce tumorigenesis and tumor progression, whereas high expression levels of antioxidant genes have been associated with chemoresistance in different cancers. However, the role of oxidative stress in MCL pathogenesis and the involvement of SOX11 regulating redox homeostasis in MCL cells are largely unknown. Here, by integrating gene set enrichment analysis of two independent series of MCL, we observed that SOX11+ MCL had higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels compared to SOX11− MCL primary tumors and increased expression of Peredoxine2 (PRDX2), which upregulation significantly correlated with SOX11 overexpression, higher ROS production and worse overall survival of patients. SOX11 knockout (SOX11KO) significantly reduced PRDX2 expression, and SOX11KO and PRDX2 knockdown (PRDX2KD) had increased ROS levels and ROS-mediated tumor cell death upon treatment with drugs, compared to control MCL cell lines. Our results suggest an aberrant redox homeostasis associated with chemoresistance in aggressive MCL through SOX11-mediated PRDX2 upregulation, highlighting PRDX2 as promising target for new therapeutic strategies to overcome chemoresistance in aggressive MCLs.

VPS13A disease and Huntington’s disease (HD) are two basal ganglia disorders that may be difficult to distinguish clinically because they have similar symptoms, neuropathological features, and cellular dysfunctions with selective degeneration of the medium spiny neurons of the striatum. However, their etiology is different. VPS13A disease is caused by a mutation in the VPS13A gene leading to a lack of protein in the cells, while HD is due to an expansion of CAG repeat in the huntingtin (Htt) gene, leading to aberrant accumulation of mutant Htt. Considering the similarities of both diseases regarding the selective degeneration of striatal medium spiny neurons, the involvement of VPS13A in the molecular mechanisms of HD pathophysiology cannot be discarded. We analyzed the VPS13A distribution in the striatum, cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum of a transgenic mouse model of HD. We also quantified the VPS13A levels in the human cortex and putamen nucleus; and compared data on mutant Htt-induced changes in VPS13A expression from differential expression datasets. We found that VPS13A brain distribution or expression was unaltered in most situations with a decrease in the putamen of HD patients and small mRNA changes in the striatum and cerebellum of HD mice. We concluded that the selective susceptibility of the striatum in VPS13A disease and HD may be a consequence of disturbances in different cellular processes with convergent molecular mechanisms already to be elucidated.

Penicillium rubens strain 212 (PO212) acts as an inducer of systemic resistance in tomato plants. The effect of crude extracellular extracts of PO212 on the soil-borne pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici has been evaluated. Evidence of the involvement of soluble, thermo-labile, and proteinase-inactivated macromolecules present in PO212 crude extracts in the control of Fusarium vascular disease in tomato plants was found. Proteomic techniques and the availability of the access to the PO212 genome database have allowed the identification of glycosyl hydrolases, oxidases, and peptidases in these extracellular extracts. Furthermore, a bioassay-guided fractionation of PO212 crude extracellular extracts using an integrated membrane/solid phase extraction process was set up. This method enabled the separation of a PO212 crude extracellular extract of seven days of growth into four fractions of different molecular sizes and polarities: high molecular mass protein fraction >5 kDa, middle molecular mass protein fraction 5–1 kDa, low molecular mass metabolite fraction, and nutrients from culture medium (mainly glucose and minerals). The high and middle molecular mass protein fractions retained disease control activity in a way similar to that of the control extracts. Proteomic techniques have allowed the identification of nine putatively secreted proteins in the high molecular mass protein fraction matching those identified in the total crude extracts. Therefore, these enzymes are considered to be potentially responsible of the crude extracellular extract-induced resistance in tomato plants against F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici. Further studies are required to establish which of the identified proteins participate in the PO212’s action mode as a biocontrol agent.

En estas páginas comentamos brevemente la labor que se ha venido desarrollando en los últimos diez años (2000-2009) con respecto al léxico italiano y español en contraste/en contacto, tanto desde un punto de vista teórico como práctico. Para ello, se comenta la labor de algunos centros de investigación al respecto, se pasa revista a los últimos congresos de lexicografía que se han ocupado de lexicografía bilingüe de este par de lenguas y se señalan las publicaciones más recientes de crítica lexicográfica, así como los diccionarios italiano-español que han salido a la luz en el período indicado. Como resultado, se observa que la lexicografía crítica ítalo-española actualmente se desarrolla fundamentalmente en Italia y que la causa de la atención que recibe dicha materia en este país se debe, en gran parte, al aumento de la didáctica del español en la escuela obligatoria (y en la universidad).
