1. Effect of Emotional Intelligence on Academic Performance among Business Students in Pakistan

Abstract

Emotional intelligence (EI) has been a popular topic in the field of organizational behaviour. Research shows that emotional intelligence successfully predicts job performance and leadership skills. Based on these reasons, this study attempts to evaluate the impact of emotional intelligence on academic performance of business students. It also aims to analyze if business schools contribute to the development of emotional intelligence in students. Data was collected from 325 business students studying in three business-related institutions. This study measures emotional intelligence by employing Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue SF) and academic performance through grade point average (GPA). Hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to ascertain the effect of emotional intelligence on academic performance of business students. Findings suggested that the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic performance was weak. However, the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic performance improves considerably over the years. These results imply that the curriculum and evaluation system in our business schools needs to be designed adequately in order to reflect the emotional intelligence of our students, as emotional intelligence is a key capability for managerial success.

3. Conceptualization and measurement of vitality at work and its relationship with subjective career plateau

Abstract

Based on the emerging literature on positivity in behavioural and organizational sciences, this thesis conceptualizes the phenomenon of Vitality at Work (VAW). The concept is based on the interdependence of individual and organizational health which exist in a symbiotic relationship. VAW is an integrative, over-arching framework combining individual health and well-being with positive work attitudes and positive social interactions. These have not been brought together within a single construct in the literature. The thesis also explores the concept of Subjective Career Plateau (SCP), a subjective state where an individual believes that the probability of future career advancement, both in terms of hierarchical progression and lateral diversification are low. Data are presented which examine the effect of Subjective Career Plateau on Vitality at Work. The study presents data from the UK Higher Education Sector with responses collected from academics working in top-ranking UK universities. The study employs a survey methodology and quantitative methods for data analysis. Using 365 valid responses, the study validates the concept of Vitality through Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis. Confirmatory Factor Analysis confirms a clear structure of the suggested factors and validates the measurement model for Vitality. A measurement model is also confirmed for measuring Subjective Career Plateau through CFA. Regression analysis is employed to test the hypothesis between SCP and VAW and the results confirm that Subjective Career Plateau has a significant effect on Vitality. The thesis makes a contribution to theory and knowledge by developing an important organizational concept and exploring its relationship with Subjective Career Plateau. Based on the findings, recommendations are offered to managers, practitioners and policy-makers for an increased focus on individual health and well-being, development of a positive and energizing work environment and provision of opportunities for career development and diversification. Finally, the thesis discusses the possible future opportunities for research.

7. Envy at Workplace: Examining its Sequential Effect on Cyberbullying, Organizational Politics and Job Satisfaction in University Teachers in Pakistan

Abstract

Academic jealousy and politics is a well-known concept. Similarly, envy is a common human behaviour, however, research on these concepts, particularly on envy and its types has remained limited until recently. Envy can trigger harmful behaviours, such as workplace bullying and escalate political activity, especially when the envious intends to damage the envied. This study analyses the effect of malicious envy on job satisfaction with mediation of cyber bullying and organizational politics. A survey study of 359 questionnaires filled by university teachers in Pakistan was conducted. Analysis was conducted using structural equations modelling through Smart-PLS. Construct validity and discriminant validity were established for all constructs. Mediation was analysed through process approach specified by Preacher and Hayes (2006). Findings revealed that malicious envy positively influenced cyberbullying behaviour and increased organizational politics. Results also demonstrated that malicious envy at workplace does not affect job satisfaction when observed independently, however when the mediators of cyberbullying and organizational politics are involved, the relationship between malicious envy and job satisfaction becomes positive. It means that persons having malicious envy feelings towards their colleagues felt satisfied by engaging in bullying and politicizing activities. 10. Emotional intelligence and resistance to change: Mediating role of psychological capital in telecom sector of Pakistan

Abstract

Emerging research on positive psychological resources has identified Psychological Capital (PsyCap) as an important contributor towards a number of useful organizational outcomes. Literature on change management suggests that one of the most significant obstacles in managing change is employees' inability to accept the change initiatives, and that emotional intelligence (EI) and PsyCap both support in combating resistance towards change (RTC). Based on the importance of the three interrelated concepts, the present study is aimed to examine the mediating role of psychological capital on the relationship between emotional intelligence and resistance towards change. Data has been collected from a sample of 170 employees from telecom organizations operating in Pakistan through personally administered questionnaires. The mediation effect has been tested using Baron and Kenny's method of hierarchical multiple regression. Results show a positive relationship between EI and PsyCap, a negative relationship between PsyCap and resistance towards change and a negative relationship between emotional intelligence and the resistance toward change. Finally, PsyCap fully mediated the relationship between emotional intelligence and resistance towards change. The study makes a significant and unique contribution to literature by showing the mediation effect of PsyCap between the relationship of EI and RTC, which has been explored for the first time. Also, the study establishes that significant relationships exist between EI, PsyCap and RTC individually in the unique context of telecom sector of Pakistan. It is concluded that emotional intelligence leads to stronger psychological resources which play a significant role in employee's proactive attitudes towards change. Finally, limitations, future research and practical implications have been discussed.

11. Conceptualizing vitality at work: Bridging the gap between individual and organizational health

Abstract

Based on the emerging literature on positivity in behavioral and organizational sciences, this study conceptualizes the phenomenon of Vitality at Work (VAW). VAW is an integrative, multi-dimensional framework which combines personal health with positive work attitudes and an energizing work environment. The article proposes that VAW is a state in which individuals feel healthy and committed to their work and organizations in the presence of positive and energizing work connections. Moreover, these three dimensions exist in a symbiotic relationship with each other. By demonstrating this coexistence, VAW confirms the interdependence of individual and organizational health. Five factors were identified from literature as the underlying dimensions of VAW which are; Sense of Coherence (SoC); Perceived Health and Energy (PHE); Energizing Connections (EC); Organizational Commitment (OC); and Goal Commitment (GC). For the first time, these elements have been brought together in a single empirical model, which applies exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis to survey data on academics employed in top-ranking United Kingdom's (UK) universities. Results from 365 responses on a structured questionnaire demonstrate the robustness of the proposed construct, and provide evidence that healthy employees are committed to their work and organizations when energized by positive work connections.

Abstract

An increasing emphasis on morality and ethics in the business environment has called for an enhanced focus on virtue-based phenomenon in organizational research. This study explores a recently conceptualized phenomenon of organizational virtuousness and tests its relationship with organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) directly and through mediating role of perceived organizational support (POS). An empirical study was conducted on a sample of 250 employees in four banks of Pakistan to test the relationship between these constructs through Hierarchical Multiple Regression. Organizational virtuousness has significant positive relationship with organizational citizenship behavior. Further, perceived organizational support is a partial mediator of organizational virtuousness and organizational citizenship behavior. The findings make an important contribution to positivity literature and suggest that organizations should adopt practices and procedures which help in building the climate of virtuousness in organizations.
