This study investigates the crucial role of charge transport layers in enhancing the performance of inverted organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) through advanced numerical simulations using OghmaNano software. OPVs offer distinct advantages, including lightweight, flexibility, and potential cost-effectiveness compared to traditional silicon-based counterparts, making them pivotal for sustainable energy solutions. We evaluate the efficiency of inverted (iOPVs) employing binary (PM6:L8-BO) and ternary (PM6:D18:L8-BO) active layers, utilizing electron transport layers (ETLs) including ZnO, TiO2, and SnO2, and hole transport layers (HTLs) such as MoO3, PEDOT, and WO3. Results highlight ZnO with a 15 nm-thick layer combined with MoO3 HTL achieving an impressive efficiency of 18.89% in ternary devices, demonstrating the effectiveness of organic materials and ternary blends. The study demonstrates that TiO2 or SnO2 ETLs can compete effectively with ZnO ETLs, particularly when used at thinner thicknesses, and offers alternative fabrication methods. It suggests that employing thin ETL layers (15 ± 2 nm) could significantly enhance the performance of iOPV devices. Simulations are crucial for optimizing iOPV device configurations with thin ETL layers, enabling rapid prototyping and cost-effective exploration of material combinations and device architectures. These layers play a critical role in balancing charge carrier generation and transport efficiency, collectively maximizing device performance. Overall, the study underscores the pivotal role of simulations and optimized layer thicknesses in advancing OPV technology by refining manufacturing processes and accelerating the adoption of OPVs for sustainable energy solutions.

In this study, the removal of benzotriazole (BTA), a pervasive aquatic contaminant widely used for its anti-corrosion, UV-stabilizing, and antioxidant properties, by nanomagnetite, biochar, and nanomagnetite-biochar composite is investigated. Nanomagnetite and nanomagnetite-biochar composite were synthesized under anoxic conditions and tested for BTA removal efficiency at neutral pH under both oxic and anoxic conditions at different time scales. Within the short time scale (up to 8 h), the removal of BTA by nanomagnetite-biochar composite was shown to be due to BTA deprotonation by the nanomagnetite surface. Through proton liberation, Fe²⁺ is released in accordance with the reaction Fe₃O₄ + 2H⁺ → Fe₂O₃ + Fe²⁺ + H₂O, which likely influences BTA complexation and its possible redox degradation. On the longer time scale, biochar achieved higher removal efficiency: 50% BTA removed within 48 h, due to formation of a ternary complex with surface Ca 2+ ions, or 75% BTA removed after HCl biochar acid wash followed by Ca 2+ surface saturation. As BTA presents significant environmental risks due to its extensive industrial applications, the present study offers critical insights into the mechanisms of BTA removal by nanomagnetite-biochar composite, and highlights the potential of such materials for water treatment applications.

Air crashes or explosions with numerous victims may result in thousands of fragmented human remains that present a massive challenge for disaster victim identification teams. Genetic identification may present important financial and technical limits, and the physical re-association of fractured bones by forensic anthropologists may require a time-consuming phase of cleaning and drying. A virtual re-association (VRA) of fragmented human remains using postmortem computed tomography (CT)-scan images could enhance the identification process and reduce the number of genetic analyses required. Therefore, this study investigated the advantages and limitations of a VRA protocol in comparison with physical re-association (PRA) in a laboratory setting and in a real case scenario. As a first step, six porcine femurs were scanned by multi-detector CT before and after physical fragmentation. PRA of the dry bones and VRA of the 3D models of the fragments were then performed. The physically reconstructed dry bones were then once more scanned with CT. The mean distance between intact and reconstructed models, the number of re-associated fragments, and the time needed for the reconstruction were evaluated. In a second step, 87 fragmented remains resulting from a controlled pig bombing were collected, scanned, and virtually re-associated to test the feasibility of the protocol in a real context. The reconstruction of the femurs showed no difference in accuracy between PRA and VRA. Although the VRA was faster than PRA, the preparation of the material still needs to be taken into consideration. The VRA after the controlled pig bombing was limited to 8% of the total fragments. Differences in alveolar and cortical osseous structure and the presence of cartilage resulted in segmentation approximations and difficulties in the re-association itself. The explosion produced an important loss of intermediate bone elements. The VRA method still needs further evaluations with a larger sample size and different fragmentation mechanisms. However, the presented research shows promising results towards enhancing the efficiency of identifying individuals after a mass disaster., Key Points: Mass disasters with highly fragmented bodies represent a major challenge for the disaster victim identification (DVI) teams.Using CT-scans of the fragments, a virtual re-association method could enhance the DVI process and reduce the number of genetic analysis required.A laboratory setting using porcine femurs shown that the VRA process could start earlier and was faster than the physical re-association.Although methodological limits were highlighted, and the efficiency of the method has to be re-evaluated, the controlled bombing showed that the VRA could be applied in a real case scenario., (© The Author(s) 2024. Mitochondrial dysfunctions belong amongst the most common metabolic diseases but the signalling networks that lead to the manifestation of a disease phenotype are often not well understood. We identified the subunits of respiratory complex I, III and IV as mediators of major signalling changes during Drosophila wing disc development. Their downregulation in larval wing disc leads to robust stimulation of TOR activity, which in turn orchestrates a complex downstream signalling network. Specifically, after downregulation of the complex I subunit ND-49 (mammalian NDUFS2), TOR activates JNK to induce cell death and ROS production essential for the stimulation of compensatory apoptosis-induced proliferation within the tissue. Additionally, TOR upregulates Notch and JAK/STAT signalling and it directs glycolytic switch of the target tissue. Our results highlight the central role of TOR signalling in mediating the complex response to mitochondrial respiratory dysfunction and they provide a rationale why the disease symptoms associated with respiratory dysfunctions are often alleviated by mTOR inhibitors.

Nanoporous gold and platinum electrodes are used to pattern n-type silicon by contact etching at the macroscopic scale. This type of electrode has the advantage of forming nanocontacts between silicon, the metal and the electrolyte as in classical metal assisted chemical etching while ensuring electrolyte transport to and from the interface through the electrode. Nanoporous gold electrodes with two types of nanostructures, fine and coarse (average ligament widths of ~30 and 100 nm, respectively) have been elaborated and tested. Patterns consisting in networks of square-based pyramids (10 × 10 μm 2 base × 7 μm height) and U-shaped lines (2, 5, and 10 μm width × 10 μm height × 4 μm interspacing) are imprinted by both electrochemical and chemical (HF-H 2 O 2 ) contact etching. A complete pattern transfer of pyramids is achieved with coarse nanoporous gold in both contact etching modes, at a rate of ~0.35 μm min -1 . Under the same etching conditions, U-shaped line were only partially imprinted. The surface state after imprinting presents various defects such as craters, pores or porous silicon. Small walls are sometimes obtained due to imprinting of the details of the coarse gold nanostructure. We establish that np-Au electrodes can be turned into "np-Pt" electrodes by simply sputtering a thin platinum layer (5 nm) on the etching (catalytic) side of the electrode. Imprinting with np Au/Pt slightly improves the pattern transfer resolution. 2D numerical simulations of the valence band modulation at the Au/Si/electrolyte interfaces are carried out to explain the localized aspect of contact etching of n-type silicon with gold and platinum and the different surface state obtained after patterning. They show that n-type silicon in contact with gold or platinum is in inversion regime, with holes under the metal (within 3 nm). Etching under moderate anodic polarization corresponds to a quasi 2D hole transfer over a few nanometers in the inversion layer between adjacent metal and electrolyte contacts and is therefore very localized around metal contacts.

Phalanx bone metastasis as the initial presenting sign of lung cancer is a rare presentation. Lung cancer is known to metastasize to the bone, but rarely to the fingers. A 61-year-old male smoker presented with pain in the left ring finger. Severe pain discouraged the patient from using his left hand. An X-ray of the left hand showed a lytic bone lesion. The patient was treated with finger radiotherapy. Analgesics were no longer needed and the patient was able to reuse his left hand in his everyday life. Palliative radiotherapy relieved our patient and improved his quality of life.

We present the design, optimization, fabrication and characterization of an optical mode filter, which attenuates the snaking behavior of light caused by a lateral misalignment of the input optical fiber relative to an optical circuit. The mode filter is realized as a bottleneck section inserted in an optical waveguide in front of a branching element. It is designed with Bézier curves. Its effect, which depends on the optical state of polarization, is experimentally demonstrated by investigating the equilibrium of an optical splitter, which is greatly improved however only in TM mode. The measured optical losses induced by the filter are 0.28 dB.

Purpose: To assess the toxicity and efficacy of preoperative chemoradiation in pancreatic cancer., Methods and Materials: Between November 1996 and December 2001, 32 patients with biopsy-proven pancreatic adenocarcinoma (28 head; 4 body) were treated by chemoradiation consisting of either split-course therapy (two courses of 15 Gy separated by a 2-week break, n = 10) or standard-fractionation therapy (45 Gy during 5 weeks, n = 22). Concurrent chemotherapy included continuous infusion of 5-fluorouracil and a cisplatin bolus. Pancreatic resection was scheduled for 4-6 weeks after completion of chemoradiation treatment., Results: All 32 patients completed the chemoradiation protocol. Only 2 cases of Grade 3 toxicity (weight loss, vomiting) and one fatal Grade 4 infection occurred. Of the 32 patients, 19 underwent curative resection. Two patients had a complete pathologic response. One patient died 36 months after diagnosis of late treatment-related toxicity (acute superior mesenteric artery thrombosis) with no evidence of disease. The 2-year overall survival rate for the entire group and the resected patients was 37.3% (95% confidence interval 18.2-56.4%) and 59.3% (95% confidence interval 34.1-84.9%), respectively., Conclusion: Preoperative chemoradiation with 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin is feasible and promising.

Purpose: To assess toxicity and long-term results of preoperative chemoradiotherapy in rectal cancer., Methods and Materials: Between 1989 and 1997, as a phase II study, 66 patients with T3 M0, rectal cancer received preoperatively a 45 Gy dose pelvic radiotherapy (XRT) combined with two 5-day chemotherapy courses (CT) of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) and Leucovorin (LV) delivered the first and fifth week of XRT. For each CT course, LV:20 mg/m2/d1-d5,. While the 5-FU dose was variable from 450 to 350 mg/m2/d first course and 370 to 350 mg/m2/d second course. Surgery was planned 3 weeks later., Results: XRT-CT was stopped in 1 patient due to progressive disease. CT was stopped in 1 patient due to toxicity. Grades 2 and 3 diarrhea were observed in 8 and 3 patients, respectively. One patient died from acute diarrhea due to deviation from recommendations; 60 patients went to surgery. Among the 58 patients operated on for cure, 5 had an R1-resection. After a 4.5-year median follow-up, the 5-year pelvic disease-free survival was 92% for the whole group and 96% in the R0-resection group., Conclusion: Preoperative combined XRT-5-FU-LV is feasible if optimal XRT and patients are carefully managed. The recommended 5-FU daily dose is 350 mg/m2 for both CT courses. This approach is currently tested in a large EORTC phase III trial.
