Abstract

A high-precision hypernuclear experiment has been performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) to determine the hypertriton {\Lambda} binding energy via decay-pion spectroscopy. A key element of this measurement is an accurate calibration of the magnetic spectrometers with the MAMI beam. For such an absolute calibration with small statistical and systematic uncertainties the undulator light interference method will be applied. Abstract

A database is under construction to provide a complete collection of published basic properties of hypernuclei such as {\Lambda} binding energies, lifetimes, or excitation energies. From these values, averages with related errors are computed in a systematic way. For each property, the overall experimental situation is depicted in form of an ideogram showing the combined probability density function of the measurements. The database is accessible via a dynamic website at https://hypernuclei.kph.uni-mainz.de with an user interface offering customizable visualizations, selections, or unit conversions. 3. Suzaku observations of the merging galaxy cluster Abell2255: The northeast radio relic

Abstract

We present the results of deep 140 ks Suzaku X-ray observations of the north-east (NE) radio relic of the merging galaxy cluster Abell2255. The temperature structure of Abell2255 is measured out to 0.9 times the virial radius (1.9 Mpc) in the NE direction for the first time. The Suzaku temperature map of the central region suggests a complex temperature distribution, which agrees with previous work. Additionally, on a larger-scale, we confirm that the temperature drops from 6 keV around the cluster center to 3 keV at the outskirts, with two discontinuities at {\it r}$\sim$5\arcmin~(450 kpc) and $\sim$12\arcmin~(1100 kpc) from the cluster center. Their locations coincide with surface brightness discontinuities marginally detected in the XMM-Newton image, which indicates the presence of shock structures. From the temperature drop, we estimate the Mach numbers to be ${\cal M}_{\rm inner}\sim$1.2 and, ${\cal M}_{\rm outer}\sim$1.4. The first structure is most likely related to the large cluster core region ($\sim$350--430 kpc), and its Mach number is consistent with the XMM-Newton observation (${\cal M}\sim$1.24: Sakelliou & Ponman 2006). Our detection of the second temperature jump, based on the Suzaku key project observation, shows the presence of a shock structure across the NE radio relic. This indicates a connection between the shock structure and the relativistic electrons that generate radio emission. Across the NE radio relic, however, we find a significantly lower temperature ratio ($T_1/T_2\sim1.44\pm0.16$ corresponds to~${\cal M}_{\rm X-ray}\sim1.4$) than the value expected from radio wavelengths, based on the standard diffusive shock acceleration mechanism ($T_1/T_2>$ 3.2 or ${\cal M}_{\rm Radio}>$ 2.8)., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We have revealed that extracorporeal blood Aβ-removal systems evoked a large Aβ influx into the blood. This study investigated the system that is more effective in evoking Aβ influx.Methods: Aβ removal activities were compared between hexadecyl-alkylated cellulose beads (HexDC) and fragments of polysulfone hollow fibers (PSf-HFs) in mini-columns to eliminate the filtration effect. Then, adsorptive filtration systems were adapted for PSf hemodialyzers to enhance Aβ adsorption on micropores in the wall of hollow fibers. Plasma Aβ concentrations of patients with renal failure were analyzed during treatment with PSf hemodialyzers alone for 8 h or tandemly connected HexDC and PSf hemodialyzers for 4 h.Results: In the in vitro study, Aβ removal efficiency for HexDC was approximately 100% during the 60 min treatment, whereas the removal efficiency for PSf-HF fragments gradually decreased. However, PSf hemodialyzer in adsorptive filtration systems removed Aβs comparably or more than HexDC. Aβ influx into the blood increases time-dependently. Concomitant use of HexDC and PSf hemodialyzer evoked a larger Aβ1– 40 influx than that of PSf hemodialyzer alone. However, Aβ1– 42 influx by PSf hemodialyzer alone was similar to or a little larger than influx by the combined system. Both systems evoked almost doubled Aβ influx than estimated Aβs existing in the normal brain during the 4 h treatment.Conclusion: PSf hemodialyzer alone for a longer period and concomitant use of HexDC and PSf hemodialyzer for a shorter time effectively evoked a larger Aβ influx. To evoke Aβ1– 42 influx, PSf hemodialyzer alone was effective enough. Abstract

We observed a nearby radio galaxy, the Centaurus A (Cen A), three times with Suzaku in 2009, and measured the wide-band X-ray spectral variability more accurately than the previous measurements. The Cen A was in the active phase in 2009, and the flux became higher by a factor of 1.5--2.0 and the spectrum became harder than that in 2005. The Fe-K line intensity increased by 20--30% from 2005 to 2009. The correlation of the count rate between the XIS 3--8 keV and PIN 15--40 keV band showed a complex behavior with a deviation from a linear relation. The wide-band X-ray continuum in 2--200 keV can be fitted with an absorbed powerlaw model plus a reflection component, or a powerlaw with a partial covering Compton-thick absorption. The difference spectra between high and low flux periods in each observation were reproduced by a powerlaw with a partial covering Compton-thick absorption. Such a Compton-thick partial covering absorber was for the first time observed for the Cen A. The powerlaw photon index of the difference spectra in 2009 is almost the same as that of the time-averaged spectra in 2005, but steeper by $\sim0.2$ than that of the time-averaged spectra in 2009. This suggests an additional hard powerlaw component with a photon index of $<1.6$ in 2009. This hard component could be a lower part of the inverse-Compton-scattered component from the jet, whose gamma-ray emission has recently been detected with the Fermi/LAT., Comment: 43 pages, 16 figures, will appear in the ApJ

Abstract

Transport through carbon nanotube (CNT) quantum dots (QDs) in a magnetic field is discussed. The evolution of the system from the ultraviolet to the infrared is analyzed; the strongly correlated (SC) states arising in the infrared are investigated. Experimental consequences of the physics are presented -- the SC states arising at various fillings are shown to be drastically different, with distinct signatures in the conductance and, in particular, the noise. However, functional capacity is sometimes not comparable with functional performance in clinical settings. We hypothesized that specific personality traits are related to this capacity-performance discrepancy of functional outcome.Methods: The measures in this study were the UCSD Performance-based Skills Assessment Brief (UPSA-B) for functional capacity, the Social Functioning Scale (SFS) for functional performance, and the Temperament and Character Inventory-140 (TCI-140) for personality traits. A total of 94 stable outpatients with schizophrenia were divided into four groups based on combinations of their UPSA-B and SFS cut-off points, as follows: a high capacity and high performance (HH) group, a high capacity but low performance (HL) group, a low capacity but high performance (LH) group, and a low capacity and low performance (LL) group.Results: There were no significant differences in demographics among the four groups. The LH group showed a significantly lower harm avoidance level than the LL group. The HL group showed a significantly lower persistence level than the HH group.Conclusion: Lower harm avoidance may enhance functional performance, and lower persistence can limit functional performance, regardless of the primary levels of functional capacity in patients with schizophrenia. This study aimed to assess rates of resistance to antibiotics; amoxicillin, clarithromycin and metronidazole in a University Hospital in Japan. Materials and methods: H. pylori (208 strains) were isolated from patients at the Okayama University Hospital in Japan. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined using the mean values of the E-test to determine the antimicrobial susceptibilities of the strains. Sequencing and gene analysis were performed to analyze resistance genes to clarithromycin and amoxicillin. Results: Rates of amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and metronidazole resistance were 13%, 48%, and 49%, respectively. Genetic analysis indicated that the A2143G point mutation in 23S rDNA is closely associated with the MIC of clarithromycin. The MIC in amoxicillin-resistant strains increased with an increase in the number of PBP1A amino acids mutations. Conclusion: Genetic analysis for resistant strains is not clinically effective in cases of amoxicillin resistance. Numerous bacteria with already high antibiotic resistance rates have been isolated in large hospitals such as a University Hospital. Abstract

JLab E12-19-002 Experiment is planned to measure the Λ-binding energies of 3ΛH [Jπ = 1/2+ or 3/2+(T = 0)] and 4ΛH (1+) at JLab Hall C. The expected accuracy for the binding-energy measurement is |ΔBtotal Λ | ≃ 70 keV. The accurate spectroscopy for these light hypernuclei would shed light on the puzzle of the small binding energy and short lifetime of 3ΛH, and the chargesymmetry breaking in the ΛN interaction. We aim to perform the experiment in 2025.

Therefore, application of sunscreen is recommended for the prevention of photoaging in many countries. However, the relationship between UV exposure and photoaging has rarely been investigated in clinical studies in Japan. In addition, there have been almost no long-term interventional studies in Japanese people. We have previously conducted a study where Japanese actinic keratosis patients were instructed to continuously apply sunscreen. The results indicated that long-term application of sunscreen is effective in suppressing actinic keratosis progression and generation. In the present study, we investigated the effects of sunscreen on photoaged skin in 14 elderly Japanese people. Skin conditions such as water content, transepidermal water loss, the number of spots, wrinkles, and skin color tone uniformity were measured and compared before and after the study. A statistically significant difference was observed only in skin surface hydration. There were large inter-individual differences in amount of sunscreen used throughout the study. The changes in the number of spots and skin color tone uniformity during the 18 months showed good correlation with amount of sunscreen being used. These results suggest an increase in the number of spots and deterioration in skin color tone uniformity in the 18-month non-sunscreen application period, and that such skin conditions improved with increasing use of sunscreen. In this study, we suggested an inhibitory effect on photoaging symptoms such as spots and skin color tone non-uniformity, by application of the appropriate amount of sunscreen over a long period of time in Japanese people, similar to Caucasians. 18. Sodium-glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitors and Anemia Among Diabetic Patients in Real Clinical Practice: a Retrospective Observational Study

Abstract

Background: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) were reported to increase hemoglobin levels in short-term clinical trials. Whether it is also true in real clinical practice is unknown. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. Inclusion criterion was diabetics who visited our outpatient clinic from January 2019 to August 2020. Exposure of interest was the use of SGLT2i. Outcomes were hemoglobin levels. For the cross-sectional analyses, non-linear regression models were fitted with restricted cubic splines to investigate the association between hemoglobin levels and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) for users and non-users of SGLT2i. For the case-control study, cases (anemia defined as hemoglobin Results: Among 2063 diabetics, 723 were on SGLT2i. In the cross-sectional analyses, hemoglobin levels were higher among SGLT2i users compared with non-users at eGFR >15 mL/min/1.73m2. For the case-control study, 197 cases and controls were matched. Conditional logistic regression showed that the use of SGLT2i was associated with significantly lower prevalence of anemia (OR: 0.35 [0.21-0.58]). Adjusted mean differences (95% CIs) in hemoglobin levels between users and propensity score-matched non-users of SGLT2i were 7.0 (3.0-10.0) g/L at 6 months. Among SGLT2i users, odds of increase in 6-month hemoglobin were similar across eGFR categories except for eGFR 2.Conclusions: The use of SGLT2i was associated with higher hemoglobin levels and lower prevalence of anemia in real clinical practice.

Abstract

IMPORTANCE: The ENIGMA clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis initiative, the largest pooled neuroimaging sample of individuals at CHR to date, aims to discover robust neurobiological markers of psychosis risk. OBJECTIVE: To investigate baseline structural neuroimaging differences between individuals at CHR and healthy controls as well as between participants at CHR who later developed a psychotic disorder (CHR-PS+) and those who did not (CHR-PS-). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this case-control study, baseline T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were pooled from 31 international sites participating in the ENIGMA Clinical High Risk for Psychosis Working Group. CHR status was assessed using the Comprehensive Assessment of At-Risk Mental States or Structured Interview for Prodromal Syndromes. MRI scans were processed using harmonized protocols and analyzed within a mega-analysis and meta-analysis framework from January to October 2020. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Measures of regional cortical thickness (CT), surface area, and subcortical volumes were extracted from T1-weighted MRI scans. Independent variables were group (CHR group vs control group) and conversion status (CHR-PS+ group vs CHR-PS- group vs control group). RESULTS: Of the 3169 included participants, 1428 (45.1%) were female, and the mean (SD; range) age was 21.1 (4.9; 9.5-39.9) years. This study included 1792 individuals at CHR and 1377 healthy controls. Using longitudinal clinical information, 253 in the CHR-PS+ group, 1234 in the CHR-PS- group, and 305 at CHR without follow-up data were identified. Compared with healthy controls, individuals at CHR exhibited widespread lower CT measures (mean [range] Cohen d = -0.13 [-0.17 to -0.09]), but not surface area or subcortical volume. Lower CT measures in the fusiform, superior temporal, and paracentral regions were associated with psychosis conversion (mean Cohen d = -0.22; 95% CI, -0.35 to 0.10). Among healthy controls, compared with those in the CHR-PS+ group, age showed a stronger negative association with left fusiform CT measures (F = 9.8; P < .001; q < .001) and left paracentral CT measures (F = 5.9; P = .005; q = .02). Effect sizes representing lower CT associated with psychosis conversion resembled patterns of CT differences observed in ENIGMA studies of schizophrenia (? = 0.35; 95% CI, 0.12 to 0.55; P = .004) and individuals with 22q11.2 microdeletion syndrome and a psychotic disorder diagnosis (? = 0.43; 95% CI, 0.20 to 0.61; P = .001). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This study provides evidence for widespread subtle, lower CT measures in individuals at CHR. The pattern of CT measure differences in those in the CHR-PS+ group was similar to those reported in other large-scale investigations of psychosis. Additionally, a subset of these regions displayed abnormal age associations. Widespread disruptions in CT coupled with abnormal age associations in those at CHR may point to disruptions in postnatal brain developmental processes.

Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND: During peritoneal dialysis (PD), solute transport and ultrafiltration are mainly achieved by the peritoneal blood vasculature. Glycocalyx lies on the surface of endothelial cells and plays a role in vascular permeability. Low-glucose degradation product (GDP), pH-neutral PD solutions reportedly offer higher biocompatibility and lead to less peritoneal injury. However, the effects on the vasculature have not been clarified. METHODS: Peritoneal tissues from 11 patients treated with conventional acidic solutions (acidic group) and 11 patients treated with low-GDP, pH-neutral solutions (neutral group) were examined. Control tissues were acquired from 5 healthy donors of kidney transplants (control group). CD31 and ratio of luminal diameter to vessel diameter (L/V ratio) were evaluated to identify endothelial cells and vasculopathy, respectively. Immunostaining for heparan sulfate (HS) domains and Ulex europaeus agglutinin-1 (UEA-1) binding was performed to assess sulfated glycosaminoglycans and the fucose-containing sugar chain of glycocalyx. RESULTS: Compared with the acidic group, the neutral group showed higher CD31 positivity. L/V ratio was significantly higher in the neutral group, suggesting less progression of vasculopathy. Both HS expression and UEA-1 binding were higher in the neutral group, whereas HS expression was markedly more preserved than UEA-1 binding in the acidic group. In vessels with low L/V ratio, which were found only in the acidic group, HS expression and UEA-1 binding were diminished, suggesting a loss of glycocalyx. CONCLUSION: Peritoneal endothelial glycocalyx was more preserved in patients treated with low-GDP, pH-neutral solution. The use of low-GDP, pH-neutral solutions could help to protect peritoneal vascular structures and functions.

Abstract

Background: Angiopoietin 1 and 2 regulate angiogenesis and vascular remodelling by interacting with the tyrosine kinase receptor Tie2, and inhibition of angiogenesis has shown promise in the treatment of ovarian cancer. We aimed to assess whether trebananib, a peptibody that inhibits binding of angiopoietin 1 and 2 to Tie2, improved progression-free survival when added to carboplatin and paclitaxel as first-line therapy in advanced epithelial ovarian, primary fallopian tube, or peritoneal cancer in a phase 3 clinical trial. Methods: TRINOVA-3, a multicentre, multinational, phase 3, double-blind study, was done at 206 investigational sites (hospitals and cancer centres)in 14 countries. Eligible patients were aged 18 years or older with biopsy-confirmed International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO)stage III to IV epithelial ovarian, primary peritoneal, or fallopian tube cancers, and an ECOG performance status of 0 or 1. Eligible patients were randomly assigned (2:1)using a permuted block method (block size of six patients)to receive six cycles of paclitaxel (175 mg/m2)and carboplatin (area under the serum concentration-time curve 5 or 6)every 3 weeks, plus weekly intravenous trebananib 15 mg/kg or placebo. Maintenance therapy with trebananib or placebo continued for up to 18 additional months. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival, as assessed by the investigators, in the intention-to-treat population. Safety analyses included patients who received at least one dose of study treatment. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01493505, and is complete. Findings: Between Jan 30, 2012, and Feb 25, 2014, 1164 patients were screened and 1015 eligible patients were randomly allocated to treatment (678 to trebananib and 337 to placebo). After a median follow-up of 27·4 months (IQR 17·7–34·2), 626 patients had progression-free survival events (405 [60%]of 678 in the trebananib group and 221 [66%]of 337 in the placebo group). Median progression-free survival did not differ between the trebananib group (15·9 months [15·0–17·6])and the placebo group (15·0 months [12·6–16·1])groups (hazard ratio 0·93 [95% CI 0·79–1·09]; p=0·36). 512 (76%)of 675 patients in the trebananib group and 237 (71%)of 336 in the placebo group had grade 3 or worse treatment-emergent adverse events; of which the most common events were neutropenia (trebananib 238 [35%]vs placebo 126 [38%])anaemia (76 [11%]vs 40 [12%]), and leucopenia (81 [12%]vs 35 [10%]). 269 (40%)patients in the trebananib group and 104 (31%)in the placebo group had serious adverse events. Two fatal adverse events in the trebananib group were considered related to trebananib, paclitaxel, and carboplatin (lung infection and neutropenic colitis); two were considered to be related to paclitaxel and carboplatin (general physical health deterioration and platelet count decreased). No treatment-related fatal adverse events occurred in the placebo group. Interpretation: Trebananib plus carboplatin and paclitaxel did not improve progression-free survival as first-line treatment for advanced ovarian cancer. The combination of trebananib plus carboplatin and paclitaxel did not produce new safety signals. Natural rubber (NR) is a natural polymer which is utilized for industrial rubber products. In the latex of rubber-producing plants, NR exists as rubber particles (RP) which primarily consists of a hydrophobic rubber core enclosed by a lipid monolayer. We previously revealed a formation of the protein complex composed of Hevea rubber transferase 1 and the other two RP-bound proteins. The ternary complex showed a significant rubber transferase (RTase) activity only when it was reconstituted on RPs. This time, we introduced heterologous cPTs from a variety of species onto RPs. As a result, cPTs, not only from rubber producing plants but also from non-rubber producing organisms, showed a distinct RTase activity producing high-molecular size polyisoprenoids corresponding to NR.
