1. Hydrodynamic Performance of Cycloidal Propellers with Four-Bar and Mixed Four-bar/Five-bar Mechanisms: A Numerical Study

Abstract

Cycloidal propellers constitute a specialized category of underwater propulsion devices, widely employed in vehicles requiring exceptional maneuverability. The parameters of the blade-driving mechanism directly impact the propeller performance. Hence, the effect of variations in the geometric parameters of the blade-driving mechanism on the hydrodynamic performance of cycloidal propellers must be investigated. In this study, a specific set of four-bar and mixed four-bar/five-bar mechanisms are taken as examples, and the effect of linkage-length variations on the hydrodynamic performance of cycloidal propellers was analyzed using numerical simulation methods. First, we established a physical model of the cycloidal propeller, and then derived the relationship between blade-rotation and revolution angles. Subsequently, by solving the Navier–Stokes equations and employing computational fluid dynamics simulations based on viscosity, an analysis is conducted to reveal the trends in the impact of different linkage-length combinations on the hydrodynamic performance of the cycloidal propeller. Finally, the outcomes of the numerical simulations are interpreted using the wing element theory. In similar blade-driving mechanisms, the effects of varying linkage lengths on propeller hydrodynamic performance are determined through alterations in the blade rotation angle range and equilibrium position. An increase in the range of the blade-rotation angle significantly enhances the hydrodynamic performance of the cycloidal propeller. This research employs a more realistic auto-propulsion mode for numerical simulations, establishing a mapping relationship between the blade-driving mechanism and hydrodynamic performance of the cycloidal propeller, while analyzing the underlying influencing mechanisms. Furthermore, crucial numerical simulations and theoretical foundations are employed for designing the four-bar and mixed four-bar/five-bar mechanism cycloidal propellers. The findings of this study could also be used in similar cycloidal propellers with multilinkage mechanism.

Abstract

Introduction Posterior cerebral artery acute ischemic strokes (PCA‐AIS) comprise around 2% of all acute ischemic strokes and often results in significant long‐term deficits. Current guidance regarding endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for PCA occlusion is insufficient as no randomized trials exist. Methods A real‐world retrospective National Inpatient Sample database analysis compared medical management (MM) versus EVT for PCA strokes. Propensity score matching based on medical co‐morbidities was applied to adjust for nonrandomization. Subgroup analysis based on their initial stroke severity was conducted, comparing outcomes within subgroups of NIHSS 0‐9, 10‐19, and ≥20. Additional subgroup analysis was conducted to compare patients receiving IVT vs those not. Results The study included 19,655 patients, 18,910 MM, and 745 EVT. Among the unmatched patients, the EVT cohort had significantly higher NIHSS (10.21 vs 4.67, p < 0.001). In the unmatched analysis, the EVT‐treatment group also demonstrated lower rates of favorable functional outcomes, functional independence, and higher rates of ICH and in‐patient mortality. Matched analysis showed no differences in functional outcomes but higher inpatient mortality and ICH rates in the EVT treatment group. Subgroup analysis identified higher odds of favorable functional outcomes and functional independence associated with EVT among patients presenting with intermediate NIHSS (10‐19). On further subgroup analysis, this EVT benefit was maintained only among patients receiving IVT. Conclusion This analysis demonstrates that, across the population, patients receiving EVT for PCA AIS are more severe and in general, have worse outcomes than patients receiving MM only. However, on matched analysis there does seem to be a significant clinical benefit associated with EVT for patients presenting with an NIHSS between 10‐19 and this benefit appears to be associated with patients who have also received IVT. More research is needed for optimal patient selection when considering EVT for PCA.

Abstract

Venturi bubble generators have been extensively studied because of having a simple structure and high foaming efficiency, while producing a uniform bubble size. The effect of a noncondensable gas on hydraulic cavitation was considered to improve the Zwart-Gerber-Belamri cavitation model. This improved model and a population balance model were used to study the effect of cavitation on bubble fragmentation. The CFD-PBM results were compared with experimental results, and the accuracy of the improved calculation method was verified in terms of the distributions for the cavitation cavity, gas phase, and bubble size. The calculation results showed that increasing the noncondensable gas content over a certain range promoted the development of hydraulic cavitation, and the cavitation intensity could be indirectly controlled by adjusting the noncondensable gas content. With increasing cavitation intensity, the average bubble size decreased, and the bubble size distribution became narrower. Therefore, a high-pressure pulse generated by cavitation could effectively break bubbles. The development process of microbubbles was studied. The main controlling factors for bubble formation were determined to be the turbulent shear force of the fluid and the collapse impact force of the cavitation group, which provides a theoretical basis for optimizing the design of bubble generators.

Abstract

A light hemispherical radiance field imaging system based on fish-eye camera was developed for the measurement of the surface incident radiance in an urban environment, which is often affected by radiometric heterogeneity problems. A linear radiometric model and a polynomial fish-eye lens model are used. A temperature-dependent dark level model is proposed to improve the dark correction for high dynamic range photography. This paper describes the calibration procedure for spectral and geometrical radiance field measurements and presents the results of the calibration. The spectral radiometric calibration error is 2.07%, 1.34%, and 0.98% for blue, green, and red bands, respectively. The mean geometrical calibration error is 2.037 pixels.

Abstract

Background: In December 2020, Moderna released the mRNA-1273 vaccine. The most common side effects are headache, muscle pain, redness, swelling, and tenderness at the injection site. In addition, there have been dermatological adverse events, such as hypersensitivity reactions. Although rare, various bullous eruptions have been described following vaccination. Bullous pemphigoid has been reported to occur most often after receipt of influenza and the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports of bullous drug eruptions resulting from mRNA vaccines. Case summary: A 66-years-old obese Guyanese male presented with a bullous rash following receipt of a commercial COVID-19 mRNA vaccine. He received the first dose uneventfully. However, within 24 h of receiving the second dose, he developed fever, myalgias, and malaise accompanied by a painful blistering rash of his torso, arms, and legs. His fever and myalgias improved after 24 h, but his painful rash did not, and five days after the initial symptoms, he presented to the hospital. There were many violaceous, poorly demarcated patches on his trunk, arms, and thighs on examination, many of which had large flaccid bullae within, and a few areas on his buttocks, posterior shoulder, and scrotum were eroded. The exam was also significant for lower extremity muscle tenderness, stiffness with preserved strength. A skin biopsy showed epidermal necrosis and sparse perivascular dermatitis concerning Stevens-Johnson syndrome or erythema multiforme. However, in the absence of mucous membrane involvement or targetoid lesions, the diagnosis of an extensive bullous fixed drug eruption was made. Conclusion: This case illustrates that the bullae eruption occurred as a result of receiving the Moderna vaccination.

Abstract

Quantitative measurement of small forces and small displacement using holographic optical tweezers (HOTs) is finding increasing applications due to the features of non-contact and high accuracy manipulation. Although hologram optimization algorithms have been widely reported, the holographic optical trapping performance relying on the algorithms has not been studied systematically. In this paper, we investigated the force measuring the performance of various types of HOTs generated with six different hologram algorithms (GSW, GAA, GS, SR, S, and RM). To do this, we built up a HOT instrument and compared the light fields’ intensity distribution, trap stiffness, efficiency, and calculation time of multi-point trap arrays generated by six hologram algorithms with this setup. Our work will provide a better understanding of the performance of different hologram algorithms in HOTs.

9. Impact of diurnal temperature fluctuations on larval settlement and growth of the reef coral Pocillopora damicornis

Abstract

Diurnal fluctuations in seawater temperature are ubiquitous on tropical reef flats. However, the effects of such dynamic temperature variations on the early stages of corals are poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the responses of larvae and new recruits of Pocillopora damicornis to two constant temperature treatments (29 and 31 °C) and two diurnally fluctuating treatments (28–31 and 30–33 °C with daily means of 29 and 31 °C, respectively) simulating the 3 °C diel oscillations at 3 m depth on the Luhuitou fringing reef (Sanya, China). Results showed that the thermal stress on settlement at 31 °C was almost negated by the fluctuating treatment. Further, neither elevated temperature nor temperature fluctuations caused bleaching responses in recruits, while the maximum excitation pressure over photosystem II (PSII) was reduced under fluctuating temperatures. Although early growth and development were highly stimulated at 31 °C, oscillations of 3 °C had little effects on budding and lateral growth at either mean temperature. Nevertheless, daytime encounters with the maximum temperature of 33 °C in fluctuating 31 °C elicited a notable reduction in calcification compared to constant 31 °C. These results underscore the complexity of the effects caused by diel temperature fluctuations on early stages of corals and suggest that ecologically relevant temperature variability could buffer warming stress on larval settlement and dampen the positive effects of increased temperatures on coral growth.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: In the phase II multicohort CheckMate 142 study, nivolumab plus low-dose (1 mg/kg) ipilimumab provided robust and durable clinical benefit with a manageable safety profile in previously treated patients with microsatellite instability-high/mismatch repair-deficient (MSI-H/dMMR) metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) at 13.4- and 25.4-month median follow-up (Overman MJ, Lonardi S, Wong KYM et al. Durable clinical benefit with nivolumab plus ipilimumab in DNA mismatch repair-deficient/microsatellite instability-high metastatic colorectal cancer. J Clin Oncol. 2018;36:773-779. J Clin Oncol. 2019;37:635). Here, we present results from the 4-year follow-up of these patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients received nivolumab (3 mg/kg) plus low-dose (1 mg/kg) ipilimumab every 3 weeks (four doses) followed by nivolumab (3 mg/kg) every 2 weeks until disease progression. Primary endpoint was investigator-assessed objective response rate (ORR; as per RECIST version 1.1). RESULTS: A total of 119 patients were treated; 76% had ≥2 prior lines of therapy. Median follow-up was 50.9 months (range 46.9-62.7 months). Median duration of therapy was 24.9 months [95% confidence interval (CI) 15.8-33.2 months]. Investigator-assessed ORR increased from 55% (95% CI 45% to 64%) at 13.4 months to 65% (95% CI 55% to 73%) at 50.9 months with a disease control rate of 81% (95% CI 72% to 87%). The complete response rate increased from 3% at 13.4 months to 13% at 50.9 months. Partial responses were observed in 52% of patients; 21% had stable disease, and 12% had progressive disease. Median time to response was 2.8 months (range 1.1-37.1 months), and median duration of response was not reached (range 1.4+ to 58.0+ months). At data cut-off, 37 (48%) patients had ongoing responses. Median progression-free survival was not reached [95% CI 38.4 months-not estimable (NE)], and median overall survival was not reached (95% CI NE). Grade 3-4 treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) were observed in 32% of patients; 13% of patients had any-grade TRAEs leading to discontinuation. CONCLUSIONS: The results confirm long-term benefit of nivolumab plus low-dose ipilimumab for previously treated patients with MSI-H/dMMR mCRC. Abstract

Thin living tissue slices have recently emerged as a new tissue model for cardiac electrophysiological research. Slices can be produced from human cardiac tissue, in addition to small and large mammalian hearts, representing a powerful in vitro model system for preclinical and translational heart research. In the present protocol, we describe a detailed mouse heart transverse slicing and optical imaging methodology. The use of this technology for high-throughput optical imaging allows study of electrophysiology of murine hearts in an organotypic pseudo two-dimensional model. The slices are cut at right angles to the long axis of the heart, permitting robust interrogation of transmembrane potential (Vm) and calcium transients (CaT) throughout the entire heart with exceptional regional precision. This approach enables the use of a series of slices prepared from the ventricles to measure Vm and CaT with high temporal and spatial resolution, allowing (i) comparison of successive slices which form a stack representing the original geometry of the heart; (ii) profiling of transmural and regional gradients in Vm and CaT in the ventricle; (iii) characterization of transmural and regional profiles of action potential and CaT alternans under stress (e.g., high frequency pacing or β-adrenergic stimulation) or pathological conditions (e.g., hypertrophy). Thus, the protocol described here provides a powerful platform for innovative research on electrical and calcium handling heterogeneity within the heart. It can be also combined with optogenetic technology to carry out optical stimulation; aiding studies of cellular Vm and CaT in a cell type specific manner.

12. Is low regional Hounsfield units (HU) of screw trajectory being one of the risk factors of hardware failure after posterior cervical fusions (PCFs) with instrumentation?

Abstract

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: For patients with multilevel degenerative cervical myelopathy, laminectomy and posterior cervical fusions (PCFs) with instrumentation are widely accepted technique for symptom relief. However, hardware failure is not rare which results in neck pain or even permanent neurological leision. The prevalence of hardware-related complications of laminectomy and posterior cervical fusions (PCFs) with instrumentation are lack of in-depth study. PURPOSE: To investigate risk factors of hardware failure after laminectomy and posterior cervical fusions (PCFs) with instrumentation in patients with degenerative cervical myelopathy. STYDU DESIGN: single-center, retrospective study. METHODS: Fifty-six patients who underwent laminectomy and posterior cervical fusions (PCFs) with instrumentation between January 2019 and January 2021 were included in a single institution. Patients were divided into the hardware failure group (n = 14) and no hardware failure group (n = 42). The sex, age, screw density, end vertebra (C7 or T1), cervical sagittal alignment parameters (C2-C7 lordosis, C2-C7 sagittal vertical axis, T1 slope, CL correction), and regional Hounsfield units (HU) of screw trajectory, morbidity of osteoporosis were collected and compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The mean overall follow-up was 20.6 months (range, 12–30 months). There were no significant statistical differences in general information (age, gender, follow-up period) of patients between the two groups. The differences of fusion rate, fixation levels and screw density between the two groups were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The failure rate of the fixation endpoint at T1 was lower than that at C7 (9% vs. 36.3%) (p 0.05). The hardware failure rate in cases without osteoporosis was lower than that in cases with osteoporosis (14.3% vs. 57.1%) (p CONCLUSION: Hardware failure was not uncommon after laminectomy and PCFs with instrumentation in patients with degenerative cervical myelopathy. Osteoporosis, fixation ended at C7, and low regional HU of screw trajectory were the independent risk factors.

14. Effects of weight loss on bone turnover, inflammatory cytokines, and adipokines in Chinese overweight and obese adults

Abstract

Purpose Plenty of studies have examined the long term effect of weight loss on bone mineral density. This study aimed to explore the effects of 10% weight loss on early changes in bone metabolism as well as the possible influencing factors. Methods Overweight and obese outpatients (BMI > 24.0 kg/m2) were recruited from the nutrition clinic and followed a calorie-restricted, high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet program. Dietary intake, body composition, serum procollagen type I N-propeptide (PINP), β-Crosslaps, PTH, 25(OH) VitD, a series of inflammatory cytokines and adipokines were measured for the participants before starting to lose weight and after 10% weight loss (NCT 04207879). Results A total of 75 participants were enrolled and 37 participants achieved a weight loss of at least 10%. It was found that PINP decreased (p = 0.000) and the β-Crosslaps increased (p = 0.035) in female participants. Decreases in PTH (p = 0.001), serum IL-2 (p = 0.013), leptin (p = 0.001) and increases in 25(OH) VitD (p = 0.001), serum ghrelin (p = 0.033) were found in 37 participants after 10% of their weight had been lost. Change in PINP was detected to be significantly associated with change in lean body mass (r = 0.418, p = 0.012) and change in serum ghrelin(r = − 0.374, p = 0.023). Conclusions Bone formation was suppressed and bone absorption was increased in female subjects after a 10% weight loss. Bone turnover was found to be associated with lean body mass and affected by the circulating ghrelin level.

15. First Report of Colletotrichum truncatum Causing Anthracnose in Tobacco in China

Abstract

In July 2022, large spots were observed on the leaves of tobacco in Guangxi province, China, whose shape was round and elliptical or irregular. The margins of spots were brown or dark brown with a pale yellow centre and several small black fruiting bodies. The pathogen was isolated by tissue isolation. Diseased leaves collected were cut into small pieces, sterilized with 75% ethanol for 30s and 2% sodium hypochlorite (NaCIO) for 60s, and rinsed with sterile deionized water for three times. Each air-dried tissue segment was cultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and incubated at 28℃ for 5 to 7 days in the dark (Wang et al. 2022). A total of six isolates were isolated, with differences in colony shape, edge type and colony colour, and aerial mycelium morphology, with the colony shape round or subrounded, and the edge rounded crenate, dentate or sinuate. The color of the colony was initially light yellow, then gradually changed to yellow and dark yellow. After 3-4 days, white aerial mycelia gradually grew up, which was peony-like or covered the whole colony, thus the color of the colony appeared white, and then gradually changed to orange, gray or nearly black, and all six isolates rarely produced conidia, which was consistent with the description of previous reports(Mayonjo and Kapooria 2003, Feng et al. 2021, Xiao et al. 2018). Conidia were hyaline, aseptate, and falcate, with the size of 7.8 to 12.9 × 2.2 to 3.5 μm. For molecular identification, the colony PCR method was used to amplify the internal transcribed spacer(ITS), actin(ACT), chitin synthase(CHS), and beta-tubulin(TUB2) loci of the six isolates using primer pairs ITS1/ITS4, ACT-512F/ACT-783R, CHS-79F/CHS-354R, and T1/Bt2b, respectively(Cheng et al. 2014). Partial sequences were amplified, sequenced, and uploaded to GenBank (GenBank accession Nos. OP484886，OP518265，OP518266，OP756065，OP756066, and OP756067 for ITS, OP620430 to OP620435 for ACT, OP620436 to OP620441 for CHS, and OP603924 to OP603929 for TUB2). These sequences had 99 to 100% similarity with C. truncatum isolates C-118(ITS), TM19(ACT), OCC69(CHS), and CBS 120709(TUB2) in GenBank. Homology matching was performed using BLAST and a phylogenetic tree was constructed using the Neighbor-Joining (NJ) method using MEGA (7.0) software based on ITS, ACT, CHS, and TUB2 sequences, which showed that all six isolates clustered in the same score as the C. truncatum. A pathogenicity test was performed with healthy tobacco infected with mycelial plugs (about 5 mm in diameter) of six isolates of C. truncatum from a 5-day-old culture, while negative controls on the other leaves were inoculated with sterile PDA plugs. All plants were placed in a greenhouse at 25℃ to 30℃ with 90% relative humidity. The experiment was conducted three times. Five days later, all inoculated leaves had diseased spots, whereas no symptoms appeared on negative controls. The same pathogen, C. truncatum, was identified from the inoculated leaves on the basis of morphological and molecular charchseristics as described above, fulfilling Koch’s postulates. In this study, it is the first time to report that the anthracnose on tobacco was caused by C. truncatum. Thus, this work provides a foundation for controlling tobacco anthracnose in the future.

Abstract

Objectives To evaluate the ability of post-chemo-radiotherapy (CRT) diffusion-weighted-MRI apparent diffusion coefficient (ADCmean) and 18F-FDG PET maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) to predict disease-free survival (DFS) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), and to determine whether this ability is influenced by human papillomavirus oropharyngeal cancer (HPV-OPC) status. Methods This prospective cohort observational study included 65 participants (53 male, mean ± SD age 59.9 ± 7.9 years, 46 HPV-OPC) with stage III or IV HNSCC. Primary tumour and nodal ADCmean (pre-treatment, 6- and 12-weeks post-CRT) and SUVmax (12-weeks post-CRT) were measured. Variables were compared with 2-year DFS (independent t-test/Mann–Whitney test) and overall DFS (Cox regression), before and after accounting for HPV-OPC status. Variables were also compared between HPV-OPC and other HNSCC subgroups after stratifying for DFS. Results Absolute post-CRT ADCmean values predicted 2-year DFS and overall DFS for all participants (p = 0.03/0.03, 6-week node; p = 0.02/0.03 12-week primary tumour) but not in the HPV-OPC subgroup. In participants with DFS, percentage interval changes in primary tumour ADCmean at 6- and 12-weeks were higher in HPV-OPC than other HNSCC (p = 0.01, 6 weeks; p = 0.005, 12 weeks). The 12-week post-CRT SUVmax did not predict DFS. Conclusion Absolute post-CRT ADCmean values predicted DFS in HNSCC but not in the HPV-OPC subgroup. Amongst participants with DFS, post-CRT percentage interval changes in primary tumour ADCmean were significantly higher in HPV-OPC than in other HNSCC. Knowledge of HPV-OPC status is crucial to the clinical utilisation of post-CRT DWI-MRI for the prediction of outcomes.

Abstract

Loss of function of mutated solute carrier family 12 member 3 (SLC12A3) gene is the most frequent etiology for Gitelman syndrome (GS), which is mainly manifested by hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia and hypocalciuria. We report the genetic characteristics of one suspicious Chinese GS pedigree by gene sequencing. Complete sequencing analysis of the SLC12A3 gene revealed that both the proband and his elder sister had a novel homozygous SLC12A3 mutation: c.2099T>C and p.Leu700Pro. Moreover, the SLC12A3 genes of his mother and daughter encoded the same mutated heterozygote. It was noted that in this pedigree, only the proband complained about recurrent episodes of bilateral lower limb weakness over 8 years, while his elder sister, mother and daughter did not present symptoms. The inconsistent clinical features of this pedigree implied that besides diverse phenotypes possibly originated from the same genotype, gender difference may also dominate the variant GS phenotypes. Further genetic and proteomic research are needed to investigate the precise mechanisms of GS, including the study of specific ethnicities.

Abstract

In this paper, we propose an improved Generalize Finite Integration Method with Volterra operator to solve multi-dimensional biharmonic equations. The novelty of the proposed method is that its mth order integration matrix will be exactly formulated by using Volterra operator. This leads to a significant improvement in the accuracy of the approximation. Furthermore, the original strict requirement of uniformly distributed collocation points is waived in the proposed method due to the use of piecewise polynomials. This contributes to another distinct advantage in placing collocation points for problems with geometrically complex domains. Four numerical examples are constructed to demonstrate these advantages. Comparisons on the accuracies obtained from quadrature formulas with and without Volterra operator are given. Numerical results indicate that the proposed method is capable for solving multi-dimensional biharmonic equations with superior efficiency, higher accuracy and fewer memory usage.

Various single extractants (EDTA, DTPA, CaCl2, NaNO3 and NH4NO3) and the first step of Community Bureau of Reference (BCR1) method were used to evaluate the immobilization of Cd in contaminated acidic paddy soil by different amendments. The extractability of Cd in amended soil changed in the following order: EDTA ≍ BCR1 > DTPA > NH4NO3 ≍ CaCl2 > NaNO3. A simple correlation analysis indicated that the BCR1, CaCl2, NH4NO3, and NaNO3 methods are the best suited methods for predicting changes in the phytoavailability to rice of Cd in soil (r = 0.680 to 0.828, P < 0.001), followed by the DTPA extraction procedure (r = 0.543 to 0.666, P < 0.01). However, non-significant correlations were observed between soil EDTA-extractable Cd and Cd accumulated in rice. Accordingly, the BCR1, CaCl2, NH4NO3, and NaNO3 extraction procedures are recommended for evaluating the immobilization of Cd in contaminated acidic paddy soil.

Abstract

We investigate whether explicit representation of the urban land surface improves the simulation of the record-breaking 24-h heavy rain event that occurred over Mumbai, India on 26 July 2005 as the event has been poorly simulated by operational weather forecasting models. We conducted experiments using the Regional Atmosphere modeling system (RAMS 4.3), coupled with and without explicit urban energy balance model-town energy budget (TEB) to study the role of urban land – atmosphere interactions in modulating the heavy rain event over the Indian monsoon region. The impact of including an explicit urban energy balance on surface thermodynamic, boundary layer, and circulation changes are analyzed. The results indicate that even for this synoptically active rainfall event, the vertical wind and precipitation are significantly influenced by heterogeneity in surface temperatures due to urbanization, and the effect is more significant during the storm initiation. Interestingly, precipitation in the upwind region of Mumbai city is increased in the simulation, possibly as a feedback from the sea breeze – urban landscape convergence. We find that even with the active monsoon, the representation of urbanization contributes to local heavy precipitation and mesoscale precipitation distribution over the Indian monsoon region. Additional experiments within a statistical dynamical framework show that an urban model by itself is not the dominant factor for the enhanced rainfall for a Mumbai heavy rain event; the combination of updated SST fields using Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) data with the detailed representation of urban effects simulated by the TEB model created realistic gradients that successfully maintained the convergence zone over Mumbai. Further research will require more detailed morphology data for simulating weather events in such urban regions. The results suggest that urbanization can significantly contribute to extremes in monsoonal rain events that have been reported to be on the rise.

Abstract

Background Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) does not respond to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) therapy as single agent treatments including anti-PD-1 antibody. One of the mechanisms for the resistance of PDAC to ICI is now attributed to the immunosuppressive microenvironment (TME) in PDAC. Myeloid cells are thought to be the predominant immunosuppressive cells in the TME. Human interleukin-8 (IL-8) is a pro-inflammatory chemokine in the CXC family and has the capability of recruiting myeloid cells into the TME to promote tumor progression and immune escape. Therefore, several anti-IL-8 blockade antibodies were developed including HuMax-IL8 and B108-IL8, which both are fully human IgG1 kappa monoclonal antibodies. We therefore tested whether anti-IL-8 antibodies can potentiate anti-tumor activity of anti-PD-1 antibody in a humanized model of PDAC. Materials and Methods We reconstituted the immune system of the NGS mice with ex vivo activated human T cells and a combination of CD14+ and CD16+ myeloid cells after the mice were orthotopically implanted with human PDAC cells. 10x single nuclei RNA-Seq data processing was further performed to analyze differentially expressed genes among certain cell clusters. Results Our results showed that anti-PD-1 antibody alone had a minimal anti-tumor activity when mice was reconstituted with ex vivo activated T cells. Interestingly, the infusion of the combination of CD14+ and CD16+ myeloid cells together with anti-PD-1 antibody resulted in a modest anti-tumor activity. Adding either HuMAX-IL8 or B108-IL8 led to a significantly enhanced anti-tumor activity. Both CD14+ and CD16+ myeloid cells appeared to be needed for the full anti-tumor activity of IL-8 blockade because mice infused with only CD14+ myeloid cells did not respond to IL-8 blockade and mice infused with only CD16+ myeloid cells responded partially to IL-8 blockade. This result suggested that the target of IL-8 is mainly present in CD16+ myeloid cells and is likely to be granulocytes. Tumor infiltrating immune cells were isolated and demonstrated that IL-8 blockade increases CD45+CD11b+CD15+CD14- myeloid cells, which is known to comprise neutrophils and granulocytic myeloid derived suppressive cells (G-MDSC), in the tumors. Reconstitution of the mice with myeloid cells led to a decrease of CD8+ T cells in the tumors; however, IL-8 blockade brought the CD8+ T cell number back to the baseline. Consistent with an effect of IL-8 blockade on the increase of CD15+CD14- myeloid cells, single nuclear RNA sequencing analysis of the tumor tissues showed that the innate immune response and cytokine response pathways in the myeloid cell cluster were activated by IL-8 blockade. Conclusions This result suggested that IL-8 blockade did not simply inhibit myeloid cells as previously anticipated, but potentiated myeloid cells for the innate immune response and concomitant production of type I cytokines. Such immune responses may subsequently activate the effector T cells as the single nuclear RNA sequencing analysis demonstrated enhanced activation signals in the T cell cluster from the tumors treated by anti-IL-8 antibodies. Taken together, this study supports further testing of anti-IL-8 antibodies including B108-IL8 and HuMax-IL8 in combination with anti-PD-1 antibodies for PDAC treatment. Disclosure Information P. Abstract

A ferrite-dielectric metamaterial composed of dielectric and ferrite cuboids has been investigated by experiments and simulations. By interacting with the electromagnetic wave, the Mie resonance can take place in the dielectric cuboids and the ferromagnetic precession will appear in the ferrite cuboids. The magnetic field distributions show the electric Mie resonance of the dielectric cuboids can be influenced by the ferromagnetic precession of ferrite cuboids when a certain magnetic field is applied. The effective permittivity of the metamaterial can be tuned by modifying the applied magnetic field. A good agreement between experimental and simulated results is demonstrated, which confirms that these metamaterials can be used for tunable microwave devices.

Abstract

Novel graphite-molybdenum carbide nanocomposites (G-Mo2C) are synthesized by a typical solid state reaction with melamine and MoO3 as precursors under inert atmosphere. The characterization results indicate that G-Mo2C composites are composed of high crystallization and purity of Mo2C and few layers of graphite carbon. Mo2C nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 5 to 50 nm are uniformly supported by surrounding graphite layers. It is believed that Mo atom resulting from the reduction of MoO3 is beneficial to the immobilization of graphite carbon. Moreover, the electrocatalytic performances of G-Mo2C for ORR in alkaline medium are investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), rotating disk electrode (RDE) and chronoamperometry test with 3M methanol. The results show that G-Mo2C has a considerable catalytic activity and superior methanol tolerance performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) benefiting from the chemical interaction between the carbide nanoparticles and graphite carbon.

Abstract

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is an effective and efficient technique for evaluating coal quality. The original spectra might be contaminated by scattering interference and random noise. We propose a novel artifact removal framework to recover the buried information and to overcome limitations of currently available preprocessing techniques, such as the multiplicative scatter correction (MSC), as well as a smoothing process. The two-step framework is mainly constructed by MSC and Savitzky–Golay convolution (S-SGC) . Moreover, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to search the optimal parameters within the framework. In addition, the spectra are collected from coal samples with different particle sizes (i.e., 0.2 and 3 mm), which may carry different characteristics and interfering information. We have analyzed seven kinds of coal properties, such as moisture (%), ash (%), volatile matter (%), and heating value (MJ/kg) via partial least square regression (PLSR) models in order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed two-step method provides superior performances for zooming in the spectral characteristic peaks and filtering the random noise simultaneously, which mainly benefits from the appropriate combination of MSC and S-SGC.

Abstract

Cell migration plays an important role in physiological and pathological processes where the fibrillar morphology of extracellular matrice (ECM) could regulate the migration dynamics. To mimic the morphological characteristics of fibrillar matrix structures, low-voltage continuous electrospinning was adapted to construct straight, wavy, looped and gridded fibre patterns made of polystyrene (of fibre diameter ca. 3 μm). With microfibres deposited onto non-passivated surfaces, cells were permitted to explore their different shapes in response to the directly-adhered fibre, as well as to the neighbouring patterns. For all the patterns studied, analysing cellular migration dynamics of MDA-MB-231 (a highly migratory breast cancer cell line) demonstrated a switch in behaviour when the pattern features approach the upper limit of the cell minor axis. Our findings suggest that, although cells dynamically adjust their shapes in response to different fibrillar environments during migration, their ability to divert from an existing fibre track is limited by the size along the cell minor axis. We therefore conclude that the upper limit of cell minor axis might act as a guide for the design of microfibre patterns for different purposes of cell migration.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: In December 2020, Moderna released the mRNA-1273 vaccine. The most common side effects are headache, muscle pain, redness, swelling, and tenderness at the injection site. In addition, there have been dermatological adverse events, such as hypersensitivity reactions. Although rare, various bullous eruptions have been described following vaccination. Bullous pemphigoid has been reported to occur most often after receipt of influenza and the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports of bullous drug eruptions resulting from mRNA vaccines. CASE SUMMARY: A 66-years-old obese Guyanese male presented with a bullous rash following receipt of a commercial COVID-19 mRNA vaccine. He received the first dose uneventfully. However, within 24 h of receiving the second dose, he developed fever, myalgias, and malaise accompanied by a painful blistering rash of his torso, arms, and legs. His fever and myalgias improved after 24 h, but his painful rash did not, and five days after the initial symptoms, he presented to the hospital. There were many violaceous, poorly demarcated patches on his trunk, arms, and thighs on examination, many of which had large flaccid bullae within, and a few areas on his buttocks, posterior shoulder, and scrotum were eroded. The exam was also significant for lower extremity muscle tenderness, stiffness with preserved strength. A skin biopsy showed epidermal necrosis and sparse perivascular dermatitis concerning Stevens-Johnson syndrome or erythema multiforme. However, in the absence of mucous membrane involvement or targetoid lesions, the diagnosis of an extensive bullous fixed drug eruption was made. CONCLUSION: This case illustrates that the bullae eruption occurred as a result of receiving the Moderna vaccination.

Objectives To evaluate the ability of post-chemo-radiotherapy (CRT) diffusion-weighted-MRI apparent diffusion coefficient (ADCmean) and 18F-FDG PET maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) to predict disease-free survival (DFS) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), and to determine whether this ability is influenced by human papillomavirus oropharyngeal cancer (HPV-OPC) status. Methods This prospective cohort observational study included 65 participants (53 male, mean ± SD age 59.9 ± 7.9 years, 46 HPV-OPC) with stage III or IV HNSCC. Primary tumour and nodal ADCmean (pre-treatment, 6- and 12-weeks post-CRT) and SUVmax (12-weeks post-CRT) were measured. Variables were compared with 2-year DFS (independent t-test/Mann–Whitney test) and overall DFS (Cox regression), before and after accounting for HPV-OPC status. Variables were also compared between HPV-OPC and other HNSCC subgroups after stratifying for DFS. Results Absolute post-CRT ADCmean values predicted 2-year DFS and overall DFS for all participants (p = 0.03/0.03, 6-week node; p = 0.02/0.03 12-week primary tumour) but not in the HPV-OPC subgroup. In participants with DFS, percentage interval changes in primary tumour ADCmean at 6- and 12-weeks were higher in HPV-OPC than other HNSCC (p = 0.01, 6 weeks; p = 0.005, 12 weeks). The 12-week post-CRT SUVmax did not predict DFS. Conclusion Absolute post-CRT ADCmean values predicted DFS in HNSCC but not in the HPV-OPC subgroup. Amongst participants with DFS, post-CRT percentage interval changes in primary tumour ADCmean were significantly higher in HPV-OPC than in other HNSCC. Knowledge of HPV-OPC status is crucial to the clinical utilisation of post-CRT DWI-MRI for the prediction of outcomes. Abstract

After oil and water separation, the produced sewage needs to be treated in a series of ways and injected into the ground if it reaches the discharge standard in oilfields. Sedimentation separation is one of the most important process. In order to study the law of settlement, a set of settlement simulation device was set up, and the raw wastewater was extracted from the oil production plant for settlement experiment, and the relevant data were gathered. Comsol software is used to model and analyse the model. Through comparing the calculation results with the experimental data, the velocity and concentration of liquid-solid two-phase medium change rules are concluded, which lays a foundation for further research on efficient treatment of oilfield sewage.

Abstract

Com o objetivo de estimar a prevalência de anemia e conhecer o estado nutricional de escolares, foi realizado um estudo em uma amostra dos alunos ingressantes nas primeiras séries do primeiro grau das escolas públicas de Osasco, município integrante da Região Metropolitana de São Paulo. O diagnóstico de anemia foi feito através da dosagem da concentração de hemoglobina do sangue colhido por punção digital. O nível crítico utilizado para caracterizar a presença de anemia foi o estabelecido pela OMS. O estado nutricional foi avaliado utilizando os indicadores peso/idade e altura/idade expressos em escores Z e a população de referência do NCHS. A prevalência, de anemia encontrada foi de 51%n. Houve diferença nos níveis de prevalência quanto à localização geográfica das escolas, sendo maior (56,9%) na Região Periférica do que na Região Central (41,7%). A presença de anemia também foi mais elevada em crianças cujos pais eram analfabetos. O risco de anemia foi superior entre as crianças que ingressaram no primeiro grau com idade superior a 8 anos. Não foi constatada presença significante de desnutrição aguda. Os resultados deste estudo destacam a anemia entre escolares como importante problema de Saúde Pública e ressaltam a urgência da implantação de programas de controle da anemia na população de escolares.The authors studied a sample of students entering the first grade in the Osasco public school system in order to determine both the prevalence of anemia and nutritional status. Osasco is part of the Greater São Paulo Metropolitan Area. Diagnosis of anemia was made through the hemoglobin concentration of blood from digital puncture. World Health Organization (WHO) levels were used to define anemia. Nutritional Status assessment. was made through weight/age and height/age indices, using Z score distribution and the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) reference levels. Prevalence of anemia was 51%. Prevalence levels varied according to the schools' geographic location: 56.9% in peripheral neighborhoods and 41.7% in central areas. Children with illiterate parents had a higher prevalence of this condition. Risk of anemia was higher for children who were over eight years of age when entering the first grade. Acute malnutrition was not found. Prevalence was higher than expected and points to the urgent need to establish an anemia control program for schoolchildren in this population.

O trabalho teve por objetivo determinar o prognóstico do aproveitamento escolar conforme a exposição ao retardo do crescimento ocorrido nos primeiros anos de vida. O estudo originou-se de um Censo de Estatura envolvendo ingressantes de todas as escolas (públicas e particulares) do Município de Osasco, Estado de São Paulo, Brasil, realizado no início do ano letivo de 1989, que identificou alunos com e sem déficit estatural. Utilizando-se um delineamento prospectivo, avaliou-se o aproveitamento escolar, ao longo do ano letivo, de 170 alunos ingressantes com déficit (índice altura/idade inferior a menos dois escores z da população de referência do NCHS/OMS) e 205 alunos sem déficit de crescimento (altura/idade superior a menos um escore z). O aproveitamento escolar dos alunos que ingressaram com retardo do crescimento foi inferior ao dos alunos sem retardo, verificando-se que o risco maior de "reprovação" desses alunos mantinha-se mesmo com o controle de possíveis variáveis de confusão, a saber, o estado nutricional atual (relação peso/altura) e variáveis sócioeconômicas (classe social, renda e escolaridade do chefe da casa).The objective of the present study was to investigate the significance of linear childhood growth retardation in relation to classroom performance. It began with a Height Census carried out in the 1989 school year, involving children attending the first grade of all public and private schools in Osasco (Greater São Paulo Metropolitan Area, Brazil), which identified the presence of growth retardation. Using a prospective study, classroom performance was evaluated throughout the school year in 170 children entering school and characterized by the height-for-age indice below -2 z scores (NCHS/OMS reference population) and in 205 children entering school and characterized by height-for-age above -1 z score. Classroom performance of stunted school children was lower than that of students without growth retardation. The study indicated that increased risk of school failure of those students remained the same, even after adjustment for possible confounding variables (present nutritional status and socioeconomic variables).

Abstract

Human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) has been identified as one of the etiological agents of wheezing in young children with acute respiratory-tract infections. In this study, we have obtained the sequence of a full-length HBoV1 genome (including both termini) using viral DNA extracted from a nasopharyngeal aspirate of an infected patient, cloned the full-length HBoV1 genome, and demonstrated DNA replication, encapsidation of the ssDNA genome, and release of the HBoV1 virions from human embryonic kidney 293 cells. The HBoV1 virions generated from this cell line-based production system exhibits a typical icosahedral structure of approximately 26 nm in diameter, and is capable of productively infecting polarized primary human airway epithelia (HAE) from the apical surface. Infected HAE showed hallmarks of lung airway-tract injury, including disruption of the tight junction barrier, loss of cilia and epithelial cell hypertrophy. Notably, polarized HAE cultured from an immortalized airway epithelial cell line, CuFi-8 (originally derived from a cystic fibrosis patient), also supported productive infection of HBoV1. Thus, we have established a reverse genetics system and generated the first cell line-based culture system for the study of HBoV1 infection, which will significantly advance the study of HBoV1 replication and pathogenesis.

Abstract

An inverse reconstruction investigation is presented to determine the inner boundary location (corrosion points) for the heat transfer in composite walls from measurement data on exterior boundary. Finite Block Method (FBM) is utilized in this paper to deal with transient heat problems across the multilayered composite walls. Starting from one-dimensional problems, Lagrange interpolation with equally spaced nodes is applied to create first order differential matrices and thereafter the higher order differential matrices are obtained. Then combining with mapping technique, physical domain is mapped into a normalized domain for two-dimensional or three-dimensional problems with 8 seeds or 20 seeds respectively. Both time-spatial approach and Laplace transform technique with Durbin's inversion method are employed in the simulating procedure. In addition, roots of Chebyshev polynomial of first kind are considered in FBM for the first time, which can improve the degree of convergence significantly. Three numerical examples are presented to validate the accuracy of FBM. Comparisons between Finite Element Method (FEM), FBM and Point Collocation Method (PCM) are demonstrated respectively. Numerical observation indicates that FBM has much higher degree of accuracy even with few collocation points.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Multiple myeloma (MM) and Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) are associated with significant immunoparesis. Based on the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there is an urgent need to understand whether patients are able to mount a sufficient response to COVID-19 vaccines. METHODS: MM and WM patients are vaccinated with mRNA-1273 (Moderna), BNT162b2 mRNA (Pfizer/BioNTech), or JNJ-78436735 (Johnson & Johnson) in a prospective clinical trial. Primary endpoint is SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (S) antibody (Ab) detection 28 days after final vaccination. Secondary endpoints include functional serologic assessments and T-cell responses at 28 days, 6 months, 9 months, and 12 months following vaccination. S Abs were detected by Elecsys assay (Roche Diagnostics), with ³ 0.80 U/mL defined as positive and titers > 250 U/mL considered stronger correlates of neutralization. SARS-CoV-2 wildtype and variant S-specific Ab isotypes and FcγR binding profiles were quantified by custom Luminex assay. Antibody-dependent neutrophil and cellular phagocytosis (ADNP and ADCP) were assessed using flow cytometry. RESULTS: To date 141 patients have been enrolled, 137 (91 MM and 46 WM) of whom had an S Ab assessment. Median Ab titer was 178.0 (IQR, 16.10-1166.0) for MM and 3.92 (IQR, 0-278.9) for WM. S Ab response rate was 91% (83/91) in MM and 56% (27/46) in WM. However, responses achieving S Ab >250 U/mL were 47.3% (43/91) in MM and 26.1% (12/46) in WM. In patients ³75 years, responses >250 u/mL were 13.3% (2/15; p250 u/mL following mRNA-1273, BNT162b2, and JNJ-78436735 were 67.6% (23/34; p Among MM patients with progressive disease, S Ab response >250 u/mL occurred in 30% (6/20) as opposed to 55.6% (30/54) for VGPR+ (p Among WM patients, S Ab responses >250 U/mL occurred in 63.6% (7/11; p Functional Ab studies were performed on 14 MM patients, 14 WM, patients, and 14 healthy donors (HD) (Figure 1). All patients were assessed 28 days following their final vaccination and myeloma patients had an additional assessment 28 days following initial vaccination. MM and WM patients demonstrated less IGG1 and IGG3 S Ab production than HD. MM patients showed increased IgA and IgM S Ab production as well as increased FcgR2A binding following a second vaccine in contrast to HD. Both ADNP and ADCP were reduced in MM and WM patients. MM patients demonstrated improved ADCP in SARS-CoV-2 variants B.1.351, B.1.117, and P.1 versus wildtype (p CONCLUSIONS: We report the first known evidence of impaired functional humoral responses following COVID-19 vaccines in patients with MM and WM. Overall, WM patients showed more severe impairment of COVID-19 S Ab responses. Most previously untreated WM patients achieved S Ab responses, however the most significant reduction in S Ab responses were seen in WM patients who received rituximab within 12 months or active BTK inhibitors. For MM patients, being in disease remission associated with improved S Ab response. Among MM and WM patients, age ³75 years associated with significantly lower rates and vaccination with MRNA-1273 (Moderna) elicited significantly higher S Ab response rates than other vaccines. A defect in ADNP and more profound defect in ADCP suggests overall compromised opsinophagocytic activity among MM and WM patients. Data comparing first and second vaccine responses in MM patients, suggest less efficient class switching to IGG as well as incomplete maturation of their FcgR2A binding profiles but normal maturation of FcgR3A. Interestingly, ADCP was improved in several emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants. T-cell studies are pending and will be updated. Further understanding of the immunological response to COVID19 vaccination is needed to clarify patients risks, and necessity for booster or alternative protective measures against COVID-19. Abstract

The effect of Ti addition on the cracking and microhardness of Ni-based superalloy Inconel 625 during the laser solid forming was investigated. With the increase of Ti content, the crack rate decreased till nil because of shrunken solidification temperature range and sufficient liquid phase healing the solidification cracks by back-filling in the terminal solidification stage. The addition of Ti promoted the formation of (γ+Laves) eutectic phase and led to the transformation of morphology of the Laves phase from the dotted or short rod to the lamellar and massive network. When the content of Ti exceeded 5 wt %, the microhardness of the alloys improved by 100 HV compared with the alloys containing below 5 wt % Ti addition. The increase in microhardness can be mainly ascribed to a network distribution of the (γ+Laves) eutectic phase.

Abstract

Tracker group of the CMS collaboration: et al., A new CMS tracker detector will be installed for operation at the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). This detector comprises modules with two closely spaced parallel sensor plates and front-end ASICs capable of transmitting tracking information to the CMS Level-1 (L1) trigger at the 40 MHz beam crossing rate. The inclusion of tracking information in the L1 trigger decision will be essential for selecting events of interest efficiently at the HL-LHC. The CMS Binary Chip (CBC) has been designed to read out and correlate hits from pairs of tracker sensors, forming so-called track stubs. For the first time, a prototype irradiated module and a full-sized module, both equipped with the version 2 of the CBC, have been operated in test beam facilities. The efficiency of the stub finding logic of the modules for various angles of incidence has been studied. The ability of the modules to reject tracks with transverse momentum less than 2 GeV has been demonstrated. For modules built with irradiated sensors, no significant drop in the stub finding performance has been observed. 45. Origin of the colossal dielectric properties in double-perovskite Sr2CoNbO6

Abstract

Sr2CoNbO6 ceramics were prepared via the solid-state reaction route. The dielectric properties of Sr2CoNbO6 ceramics were investigated as a function of temperature (90–330 K) in the frequency range from 20 Hz to 10 MHz. Our results reveal that the dielectric properties of Sr2CoNbO6 are closely linked with the conductivity of the sample. The conductivity is dominated by hopping localized carriers. The hopping process not only produces considerable conductivity followed the universal dielectric response behavior, but also gives rise to dipolar effects leading to the polaron relaxation in intermediate-temperature range. At low enough temperatures, the hopping process is frozen-in and the low-temperature Maxwell-Wagner relaxation due to frozen carriers featuring the nearly constant loss behavior appears. At higher temperatures, the long-distance transportation of the carriers becomes remarkable. These carriers are easily blocked by various interfaces resulting in space charge therein and the conventional Maxwell-Wagner relaxation in the high-temperature range. Our results demonstrate that a multirelaxation mechanism instead of a single relaxation underlies the colossal dielectric properties of Sr2CoNbO6.

An all silicon pixel telescope has been assembled and used at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility (FTBF) for the last four years to provide precise tracking information for different test beam experiments with a wide range of Detectors Under Test (DUTs) requiring high resolution measurement of the track impact point. The telescope is based on CMS pixel modules left over from the CMS forward pixel production. Eight planes are arranged to achieve a resolution of less than 6 μm on the beam transverse coordinate at the DUT position. In order to achieve such resolution with 100 x 150 μm2 pixel cells, the planes were tilted to 25 degrees to maximize charge sharing between pixels. Crucial for obtaining this performance is the alignment software, called Monicelli, specifically designed and optimized for this system. This paper will describe the telescope hardware, the data acquisition system and the alignment software constituting this particle tracking system for test beam users. Abstract

The operating condition of dredge pump is highly complicated, a technical issue is the shaft vibration problems, which has great effects on the operation safety and stability of pumps. This paper introduces a mathematical model of rotor dynamics for the dredge pump, which is used to numerically investigate critical speeds and mode shapes of the pump shaft under different bearing stiffness and damping. The effects of bearing stiffness and damping on shafting vibration characteristics are considered. The results show that the stiffness has great effect on 1st and 3rd order critical speed and the damping effect can be ignored. The stiffness has little effect on shafting axial and torsional natural frequency, but has great effect on lateral natural frequency. The analysis method of rotor dynamics dealt with in this paper can provide a foundation for the design of dredge pump shafting.

Abstract

The bidirectional thrust bearings are used to balance the thrust load of the entire shaft system which play an important role in the pumped storage units. The lubrication is usually analyzed by simultaneously solving the Reynolds equation, energy equation, film thickness equation of the film and the heat conduction equation, elastic equilibrium equation of the pad. However, in this method the assumptions for the inlet temperature of the film and the wall heat coefficients on the pad greatly affect the numerical accuracy. This study used fluid-solid-thermal interaction method, built three dimensional (3D) FEM model for the pad and collar and the 3D CFD model for the oil film, and then analyzed the influence of the thrust loads and the Babbitt layer on the bearing performance. The results show that increasing the thrust load will rapidly decrease the minimum film thickness, increase the maximum pressure and maximum temperature on the pad. Increasing the thickness of the Babbitt layer on the pad sliding surface will increase the minimum thickness of the film, decrease the maximum temperature on the pad which improve the bearing lubrication.

Abstract

In 2017 a new pixel detector was installed in the CMS detector. This so-called Phase-1 pixel detector features four barrel layers in the central region and three disks per end in the forward regions. The upgraded pixel detector requires an upgraded data acquisition (DAQ) system to accept a new data format and larger event sizes. A new DAQ and control system has been developed based on a combination of custom and commercial microTCA parts. Custom mezzanine cards on standard carrier cards provide a front-end driver for readout, and two types of front-end controller for configuration and the distribution of clock and trigger signals. Before the installation of the detector the DAQ system underwent a series of integration tests, including readout of the pilot pixel detector, which was constructed with prototype Phase-1 electronics and operated in CMS from 2015 to 2016, quality assurance of the CMS Phase-1 detector during its assembly, and testing with the CMS Central DAQ. This paper describes the Phase-1 pixel DAQ and control system, along with the integration tests and results. 50. Statistical Forecast Applied to Two Macao Air Monitoring Stations

Abstract

The levels of air pollution in Macao often exceeded the levels recommended by WHO. In order for the population to take precautionary measures and avoid further health risks under high pollutant exposure, it is important to develop a reliable air quality forecast. Statistical models based on multiple regression (MR) analysis were developed successfully for Macao to predict the next day concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, and NO2. All the developed models were statistically significantly valid with a 95% confidence level with high coefficients of determination (from 0.89 to 0.92) for all pollutants. The models utilized meteorological and air quality variables based on five years of historical data, from 2013 to 2017. The data from 2013 to 2016 were used to develop the statistical models and data from 2017 were used for validation purposes. A wide range of meteorological and air quality variables were identified, and only some were selected as significant dependent variables. Meteorological variables were selected from an extensive list of variables, including geopotential height, relative humidity, atmospheric stability, and air temperature at different vertical levels. Air quality variables translate the resilience of the recent past concentrations of each pollutant and usually are maximum and/or the average of latest 24-hour levels. The models were applied in forecasting the next day average daily concentrations for PM10, PM2.5, and NO2 for the air quality monitoring stations. The results are expected to be an operational air quality forecast for Macao.
