- Abstract
Despite cold-water coral (CWC) reefs being considered biodiversity hotspots, very little is known about the main processes driving their morphological development. Indeed, there is a considerable knowledge gap in quantitative experimental studies that help understand the interaction between reef morphology, near-bed hydrodynamics, coral growth, and (food) particle transport processes. In the present study, we performed a 2-month long flume experiment in which living coral nubbins were placed on a reef patch to determine the effect of a unidirectional flow on the growth and physiological condition of Lophelia pertusa. Measurements revealed how the presence of coral framework increased current speed and turbulence above the frontal part of the reef patch, while conditions immediately behind it were characterised by an almost stagnant flow and reduced turbulence. Owing to the higher current speeds that likely promoted a higher food encounter rate and intake of ions involved in the calcification process, the coral nubbins located on the upstream part of the reef presented a significantly enhanced average growth and a lower expression of stress-related enzymes than the downstream ones. Yet, further experiments would be needed to fully quantify how the variations in water hydrodynamics modify particle encounter and ion intake rates by coral nubbins located in different parts of a reef, and how such discrepancies may ultimately affect coral growth. Nonetheless, the results acquired here denote that a reef influenced by a unidirectional water flow would grow into the current: a pattern of reef development that coincides with that of actual coral reefs located in similar water flow settings. Ultimately, the results of this study suggest that at the local scale coral reef morphology has a direct effect on coral growth thus, indicating that the spatial patterns of living CWC colonies in reef patches are the result of spatial self-organisation.

- Abstract
Cold-water coral reefs (CWC) are known to be biodiversity hotspots, however, the sponge assemblages found to dwell within these habitats haven not been studied in depth to date in the Mediterranean Sea. The present article provides the first insight on the associated sponge fauna of the recently discovered CWC communities on the Catalan Margin and, to a lesser extent, the Cabliers Coral Mound Province, while also reviewing the current knowledge of the sponge fauna dwelling in all the Mediterranean CWC provinces. In regards to the studied areas, some rare species are cited forthe first time in the Mediterranean or redescribed, while two of them,Hamacantha (Hamacantha) hortae sp. nov. and Spongosorites cabliersi sp. nov. are new to science. At a basin scale, Mediterranean CWC appear as poriferan biodiversity hotspots, yet current diversity values on each site rather represent a small fraction of its actual fauna. Additionally, the existence of an endemic sponge fauna exclusively dwelling on CWC is refuted. Nonetheless, the sponge fauna thriving in Mediterranean CWC appears to be unique, and different from that of other Atlantic regions. Finally, with the current knowledge, the sponge fauna from the Mediterranean CWC is grouped in three distinguishable clusters (Alboran Sea, Western and Eastern Mediterranean), which appears to be determined by the basins water circulation, specially the Levantine Intermediate Water and the Atlantic Water following a western-eastern pattern from the Strait of Gibraltar to the Adriatic Sea. Overall, sponge living in Mediterranean CWC are still poorly explored in most areas, yet they appear to be good candidates for biogeographical studies.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) increases the risk of mortality in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) patients. Data on the relationship of COPD to major cardiovascular events (MACE) in AF have not been defined. The aim of the study is to assess the predictive value of COPD on incident MACE in NVAF patients over a 3-year follow-up. In the Atrial Fibrillation Registry for Ankle-Brachial Index Prevalence Assessment-Collaborative Italian Study (ARAPACIS) cohort, we evaluate the impact of COPD on the following clinical endpoints: MACE (including vascular death, fatal/non-fatal MI and stroke/TIA), cardiovascular (CV) death and all-cause mortality. Among 2027 NVAF patients, patients with COPD (9%) are more commonly male, elderly and at higher thromboembolic risk. During a median 36.0months follow-up, 186 patients experienced MACE: vascular death (n = 72), MI (n = 57), stroke/TIA (n = 57). All major outcomes (including stroke/TIA, MI, vascular death, and all-cause death) are centrally adjudicated. Kaplan–Meier curves show that NVAF patients with COPD are at higher risk for MACE (p < 0.001), CV death (p < 0.001) and all-cause death (p < 0.001). On Cox proportional hazard analysis, COPD is an independent predictor of MACE (Hazard ratio [HR] 1.77, 95% Confidence Intervals [CI] 1.20–2.61; p = 0.004), CV death (HR 2.73, 95% CI 1.76–4.23; p < 0.0001) and all-cause death (HR 2.16, 95% CI 1.48–3.16; p < 0.0001). COPD is an independent predictor of MACE, CV death and all-cause death during a long-term follow-up of NVAF patients.

Habitat mapping ,GEO/04 - GEOGRAFIA FISICA E GEOMORFOLOGIA ,Benthic habitats ,Mediterranean Sea ,Geomorphology ,Habitat mapping, Cold-water corals, Geomorphology, Benthic habitats, Mediterranean Sea ,Cold-water corals - Abstract
Habitat mapping is increasingly considered as a reliable and efficient methodology to explore and represent the complexity and extent of benthic communities. Providing a full-coverage spatial perspective of habitat heterogeneity, is becoming an essential tool in science-based management of natural resources, specifically regarding vulnerable marine ecosystems such as cold-water corals. Here we present two case studies, where we revisit known cold-water coral areas of the Mediterranean Sea and where we apply original habitat mapping techniques. The areas correspond to the Chella Bank, in the Alborán Sea, and the Santa Maria de Leuca cold-water coral province, in the Ionian Sea. The Chella Bank is one of a series of volcanic banks and knolls located in the western Mediterranean that have been described as geologic features hosting vulnerable marine ecosystems. The cold- water coral province off Santa Maria di Leuca represents one of the largest known occurrences of living reef- forming cold-water coral species (i.e. Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata) in the Mediterranean Sea, where corals grow on the exposed summits and flanks of mound-like structures (up to 300m wide and 25m high) associated with mass wasting events. Both cases adopt a holistic and integrated study of the environmental characteristics (geology and oceanography) of the observed benthic habitats and aim to map their extent using supervised automated classifications. Multibeam swath bathymetry, the derived acoustic backscatter, sidescan sonar, video footage gathered with a remotely operated vehicle, photo stills from underwater drop camera, and CTD casts where available, have been used together to identify the geological and oceanographic processes that most likely are responsible for the distribution of the observed cold-water corals and associated benthic communities.

- Abstract
During a median 36.0 months follow-up, 186 patients experienced MACE: vascular death (n = 72), MI (n = 57), stroke/TIA (n = 57).

- Abstract
Submarine canyons are associated with increased biodiversity, including cold-water coral (CWC) colonies and reefs which are features of high conservation value that are under increasing anthropogenic pressure. Effective spatial management and conservation of these features requires accurate distribution maps and a deeper understanding of the processes that generate the observed distribution patterns. Predictive distribution modelling offers a powerful tool in the deep sea, where surveys are constrained by cost and technological capabilities. To date, predictive distribution modelling in canyons has focussed on integrating groundtruthed acoustically acquired datasets as proxies for environmental variables thought to influence faunal patterns. Physical oceanography is known to influence faunal patterns but has rarely been explicitly included in predictive distribution models of canyon fauna, thereby omitting key information required to adequately capture the species-environment relationships that form the basis of predictive distribution modelling. In this study, acoustic, oceanographic and biological datasets were integrated to undertake high-resolution predictions of benthic megafaunal diversity and CWC distribution within Whittard Canyon, North-East Atlantic. The main aim was to investigate which environmental variables best predict faunal patterns in canyons and to assess whether including oceanographic data improves predictive modelling. General additive models, random forests and boosted regression trees were used to build predictive maps for CWC occurrence, megafaunal abundance, species richness and biodiversity. To provide more robust predictions, ensemble techniques that summarise the variation in predictions and uncertainties between modelling approaches were applied to build final maps. Model performance improved with the inclusion of oceanographic data. Ensemble maps identified areas of elevated current speed that coincided with steep ridges and escarpment

- Abstract
One of Saturn's largest moons, Enceladus, possesses a vast extraterrestrial ocean (i.e., exo-ocean) that is increasingly becoming the hotspot of future research initiatives dedicated to the exploration of putative life. Here, a new bio-exploration concept design for Enceladus' exo-ocean is proposed, focusing on the potential presence of organisms across a wide range of sizes (i.e., from uni- to multicellular and animal-like), according to state-of-the-art sensor and robotic platform technologies used in terrestrial deep-sea research. In particular, we focus on combined direct and indirect life-detection capabilities, based on optoacoustic imaging and passive acoustics, as well as molecular approaches. Such biologically oriented sampling can be accompanied by concomitant geochemical and oceanographic measurements to provide data relevant to exo-ocean exploration and understanding. Finally, we describe how this multidisciplinary monitoring approach is currently enabled in terrestrial oceans through cabled (fixed) observatories and their related mobile multiparametric platforms (i.e., Autonomous Underwater and Remotely Operated Vehicles, as well as crawlers, rovers, and biomimetic robots) and how their modified design can be used for exo-ocean exploration.

Occurrence and abundance of deep-water corals in the Levantine Mediterranean Sea is still largely unknown. This is the first attempt to quantitatively describe a Dendrophyllia ramea population discovered in June 2015 during the CYCLAMEN expedition on board the Research Vessel Aegaeo. This population is the deepest ever described until now in the Mediterranean and was found on the outer insular shelf off eastern Cyprus (Protaras, 35°02′N; 34°05′E). Video transects conducted by means of a remotely operated vehicle revealed a well-developed population of D. ramea located on a sandy seabed at 125–170 m depth. The highest density was 6 colonies m−2 and on average 1.6 ± 1.4 (SD) colonies m−2. The population consists of isolated or piled up branches of various sizes and large colonies, some ∼50 cm max width. The corals thrive on soft bottoms, representing a rather novel aspect of the research on D. ramea, since the species is still considered to be mostly associated with rocky substrates. The occurrence of the species in sedimentary grounds makes it especially vulnerable to bottom contact fishing gears as bottom trawling. Spatial distribution of the coral population, as well as a first attempt to characterize its habitat, are explored as an approach to describe the habitat's suitability and the vulnerability for the species in the area, Sí

- Abstract
Spatial distribution of the coral population, as well as a first attempt to characterize its habitat, are explored as an approach to describe the habitat's suitability and the vulnerability for the species in the area.

- Abstract
Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata) in the Mediterranean Sea, where corals grow on the exposed summits and flanks of mound-like structures (up to 300 m wide and 25 m high) associated with mass wasting events.

The main aim of this work is to statistically predict the distribution of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs) along the continental shelf regions of the northern Sicilian margin (southern Mediterranean). The considered habitats, already mapped in the area on a qualitative base, are the Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa seagrasses and the Coralligenous biocenosis. Posidonia oceanica and Coralligenous are considered as VMEs owing to their value as environmental indicators and biodiversity hotspots in coastal marine areas. For this reason, several actions were aimed in recent years to their complete characterization and mapping. The study area is located in the continental shelf of the northern Sicily margin, between the Cape San Vito (Gulf of Castellammare) and Cape Zafferano (Gulf of Palermo). Different physical characteristics of the seafloor were extracted from a database acquired in recent years in the frame of official national cartography (CARG) and hazard assessment (MAGIC) Italian Projects, including geological and geophysical data (seabed sampling, ROV footage, multibeam bathymetry, backscatter maps, high resolution seismic reflection records) The ultimate goal is to apply a statistical methodology allowing to predict the distribution of marine habitats from a “presence only” sampling dataset. This target was pursued by using a multidisciplinary approach, including abiotic (i.e. depth, morphological and hydrodynamic features, type of seabed) and biotic components (benthic communities) that define and characterize the mapped habitats. Predictive maps are based on the Maximum Entropy model (MaxEnt), a statistical method based on punctual occurrence of specimen (presence-only). The punctual occurrence of the three habitats was already known, whilst we considered the bathymetry, seabed steepness, aspect, fluid escape, erosional areas and sediment type as physical features for the model. The analysis was also aimed to test the performance of models obtained by choosing the training samples with different criteria. Therefore, different outputs (42 in total) have been produced by selecting samples on the basis of the area (regional analysis), the type of coasts (morphological) or randomly (random). Moreover, the models were built up both with only training samples either with training and test samples to obtain more constrained distribution patterns. Almost all the created predictive models produced good performances, with statistical parameters (gain, AUC standard deviation) very positive on average. The models derived from the regional analysis resulted to be more performing than the others, with the random-derived being the worst. The response curves pointed out that bathymetry and sediment types are the most important physical features influencing the distribution of the mapped VMEs, whereas aspect and slope are not-independent variables. These outputs also provided important information and constraints on the favorable environmental conditions for the three habitats. Results from this preliminary statistical modeling appears potentially useful in the evaluation of important environmental parameters, allowing to draw the broad distribution of marine habitats in areas where only presence data are available, and can represent a contribution in the design and monitoring of marine protected areas.

We present in this paper different studies on canyon systems, adopting distinct approaches, temporal and spatial scales. Most of our study areas coincide with the NW Sicilian canyons, which present striking differences in their morphologies in response to the Plio-Quaternary tectonic evolution of the northern Sicilian margin. In the present-day, active sedimentary processes inferred from bedform analyses along some of the studied canyons could drive to enhanced biological activities along them. This is also confirmed by an on-going study of the impact of trawling fishery on the morphology and sedimentary environments of the Sicilian margin, where intense deep-sea bottom trawling activities are registered in some of the canyons. Finally, we present the main results of the application of habitat distribution models in the Cap de Creus Canyon (NW Mediterranean), considering them as possible contributions in developing sustainable methods for the management of natural resources. The multidisciplinary and holistic perspective that raises from these studies suggests that the integration of different approaches should be considered by future scientific networks looking at submarine canyons as dynamic, interactive natural systems.

- Abstract
The Mediterranean black coral fauna includes type species of four antipatharian genera belonging to four different families, therefore phylogenetic studies hold great potential for enhancing systematics within the order. The analysis of six Mediterranean antipatharian species by means of nuclear sequence data of internal transcribed spacer (ITS1 and ITS2) rDNA confirms the separation into different families, as was previously noted on a morphological basis, with a clear distinction of the family Leiopathidae, whose position is supported by a unique number of mesenteries and lack of spines on thicker ramifications. The position of a newly recorded black coral species for the Mediterranean basin belonging to the genus Phanopathes is discussed. Antipathes dichotoma, the type species of the genus Antipathes, on which the order Antipatharia was based, does not group with other members of the family Antipathidae. Supporting a recent finding based on mitochondrial markers, this suggests a critical need for revision of the families that will be impacted by reassignment of this nomenclaturally important taxon.

- Abstract
Cold-water carbonate bioconstructions are the product of complex interactions between calcifying organisms and the surrounding environment, and deeply contribute in affecting the evolution of the submarine landscape in space and time. Important variables contributing to their development, growth and/or demise include sedimentary dynamics, food supply, physical and chemical characteristics of water masses and local hydrodynamic regimes. Geomorphological studies of bioconstructions are therefore critical in deciphering the physical and biological processes contributing to their development. The aim of this chapter is to summarise the state of the art of geomorphic studies on temperate coralligenous bioconstructions and cold-water coral reefs/mound systems, both representing the two most important and largest carbonate bioconstructions in temperate and deep-sea waters. The importance of these biogenic constructions covers several aspects. They can represent important carbonate factories of the deep sea, archives of past climate and oceanographic conditions and they support increased species diversity and complex biotic interactions with respect to the surrounding seafloor. Because of their remote location (from hundreds to thousands of meters below sea level), only since the last tens of years, technological advances are allowing fine-scale physical and ecological investigations of these bioconstructions, containing ecosystem engineers able to strongly modify the landscape heterogeneity. An increased awareness of their potential extension and significance as natural resource, is now steering scientific efforts towards the need to overcome the gaps in knowledge and contribute to prevent their vulnerability to an increasing human pressure

Cold-water coral (CWC) mounds located along the Atlantic and Mediterranean margins have been subject of intensive research during the last 15 years. Data collected in over a hundred of oceanographic cruises have highly increased our knowledge on CWC mound typologies, settings and on the environmental factors controlling their evolution. Nevertheless, there is still a poor knowledge about calcifying benthic organisms characterizing CWC communities, though their skeletal accumulation represents the dominant component of most mound facies and can provide important insights on the mound evolutionary stages. This study focuses on benthic carbonate associations (BCA) collected, through box- and gravity cores, from selected CWC mounds located in four key regions: 1. Santa Maria di Leuca CWC Province, Ionian Sea, Central Mediterranean; 2. Melilla Mound Field, Alboran Sea, Western Mediterranean; 3. Pen Duick scarpment, Gulf of Cadiz, NE Atlantic; 4. Moira Mounds, Porcupine Seabight, NE Atlantic. The main goals of this work are (1) to characterize modern BCA (bio- and thanatocoenoses) from the examined sites and to relate their spatial distribution to patterns in environmental variables and (2) to identify and interpret BCA variations through time in order to better understand the mound evolutionary processes. Our preliminary results show that the modern BCA from the four analyzed regions share major common taxonomic components. Their spatial distribution, either within a single region or a single mound, is mostly influenced by local environmental variables such as the seafloor topography, the substrate composition and the intensity of bottom currents. However, NE Atlantic and Mediterranean coral-dominated BCA can be easily distinguished due to the presence of characteristic taxa, among which the solitary scleractinian Carophyllia sarsiae and the gastropod Amphissa acutecostata, common to abundant in the NE Atlantic CWC sites and absent (or rarely present as fossil) in the Mediterranean ones. Moreover, modern coral-dominated BCA from the Pen Duick Escarpment (Gulf of Cadiz), with a prevalent presence of dendrophylliid corals and a peculiar associated fauna, are clearly distinct from the Mediterranean and the Porcupine Seabight fields, dominated by Madrepora oculata and Lophelia pertusa respectively. Interestingly, although the modern NE Atlantic communities are known to be more diversified than the Mediterranean ones, the BCA from the Moira Mounds (NE Atlantic) show the lowest number of taxa among the examined sites. On the contrary, the benthic calcifying organisms (in particular molluscs) from the Alboran Sea mounds seem to be the most diversified and larger in size. Regarding the temporal distribution of the examined BCA from CWC mounds, several variations observed along the gravity cores seem to be related to environmental changes at a local scale. However the appearance/disappearance of specific taxa and/or morphotypes (e.g. thick-walled Lophelia pertusa) as well as striking variations in the relative abundance of taxonomic groups hints at larger-scale oceanographic and sedimentary variations, probably related to climatic oscillations.

We present here the first results of the analysis and interpretation of the swath bathymetry and side scan sonar data collected along the southeastern outer shelf and upper slope regions of the Cyprus insular margin (offshore Cape Greco). The resultant bathymetric model and the derivatives (e.g.: slope, aspect, benthic position index) are presented and analyzed in order to describe the morphology of the seabed and the main geomorphological features through quantitative indicators including morphometric indexes and statistical descriptors. The presence of deep sea coral communities (Dendrophylia ramea) in a particular location of the surveyed area is also discussed and tentatively related to the landscape morphology where the colonies are settled

- Abstract
We present morphological and stratigraphic results coming from surveys acquired in a NNW-SSE trending submarine depression (Marettimo Valley) located in the Egadi Islands (western Sicily offshore). In this area the seafloor is characterized by both depositional and erosional features generated under a variety of sedimentary processes. We identified two seismic facies units that are correlatable to: A) the progradation of shallow water (coastal to offshore) deposits during forced-regression sedimentary process, and B) contourite drifts emplaced by geostrophic currents through the Marettimo Valley. This unusual association of very shallow water contourites and shelf margin deposits originates, during middle-late Pleistocene glacio-eustatic cycles, from enhanced sedimentary dynamics establishing mutual interaction between progradational growth of the margin and bottom current deposition

Sedimentary dynamics, Marine geomorphology, Marine bedforms, Egadi Islands - Abstract
Sedimentary dynamics of the Marettimo continental shelf and Marettimo Channel (Egadi Island – Western Mediterranean), have been unveiled based on the erosive and depositional features observed at the seafloor. Different morphologic features were recognized through side scan sonar, multibeam and high-resolution seismics, acquired in the framework of national Research Projects (CARG, GebecSud, MaGIC) carried out by the Department of Earth and Marine Science (former Department of Geology and Geodesy) of the University of Palermo. Sediment samples have been also collected and analyzed. The Egadi Islands are part of the NW Sicilian offshore, and belong to the mountain chain that connects the Sicilian chain to the Maghrebides one. The Marettimo Island represents an isolated portion of the Egadi continental shelf and is separated from the rest of the archipelago by the Marettimo Channel. Previous studies allowed to recognize different kind of sedimentary structures along the seafloor. Lo Iacono and Guillén (2008) described extensive field of subaqueous dunes (Ashley, 1990) along the Marettimo inner shelf, forming on gravelly and pebbly sediments and related to strong storm events (H:5.5 m, T: 12 s). Larger dunes have been observed in the north-western sector of the inner shelf with wavelengths ranging from 1 to 2.5 m, heights between 15 cm and 30 cm and extending laterally for hundreds of meters. Moreover in the north-eastern sector of the inner shelf, sorted bedforms have been detected at a depth of 40 m: they are characterized by a width varying between 15 m and 50 m and a length that reaches hundreds of meters. In the south-eastern sector of the Marettimo outer shelf, Colantoni et al. (1993) map two groups of sedimentary structures. In the same area, Lo Iacono (2004) recognized two-dimensional and three-dimensional subaqueous dunes. 2D dunes are found at depths between 60 and 90 m and show a wavelength variable between 15 and 50 m. 3D dunes, which are found at a depth of 80 m, are characterized by a wavelength of 30 m and a lateral extent of 50 m. Morphological evidences of a strong hydrodynamic regime come also from the morphobathymetric analysis of the Marettimo Channel, that is a 24 km long submarine valley oriented NNW-SSE, with a depth ranging from a minimum of 180 m to a maximum of 370 m and a width from 2 km to 14 km. Inside the channel, south of its narrowest point, a 180 m deep bathymetric threshold separates two areas, which deepens towards opposite directions: north-west and south. The flanks of the sector that deepens towards the NW are affected by mass-wasting features (Lo Iacono et al., 2007). The western flank of the channel, which delimits the Marettimo continental shelf, is carved by gullies, making the shelf-edge very uneven. Gullies develop to a maximum depth of 280 m and have a length of 250 m and a width of 50 m. At the bottom of the channel a linear incision 20 m deep, 400 m wide and almost 3 km long, is probably generated by erosive bottom currents. On the whole, the morpho-sedimentary structures here described reveal a strong hydrodynamic regime. The morphological and textural features of the bedforms observed on the Marettimo inner continental shelf suggest the occurrence of sporadic medium to strong storm events coming from western sectors. The morphological characteristics of the Marettimo Channel reveal the occurrence of strong bottom currents probably related to the severe interchange of water masses between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Sicily Channel. Predictive habitat mapping ,Submarine canyons ,Cold-water corals (CWC) ,Cap de Creus - Abstract
The 2nd International Symposium on Submarine Canyons (INCISE2014), 29th September-1st October 2014, Edinburgh.-- 1 page, Predictive habitat mapping has shown great promise to improve the understanding of the spatial distribution of benthic habitats. However, although they surely represent an important step forward in process-based ecosystem management, their predictive efficiency is not always tested by independent groundtruthing data. This is particularly true for the deep-sea environment, where sample data are always limited compared to the large extent of the areas to be mapped. The aim of this study is to apply and test different spatial models to statistically predict the distribution of three Cold-Water Coral (CWC) species (Madrepora oculata, Lophelia pertusa and Dendrophyllia cornigera) in the Cap de Creus Canyon (NW Mediterranean), based on high-resolution swath-bathymetry data and video observations from the submersible JAGO (IFM-GEOMAR). Submarine canyons act as specific hosting areas for CWCs, owing to their favourable environmental conditions, which provide habitat and shelter for a wide range of species, including commercially viable fish. Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt), General Additive Model (GAM) and decision tree model (Random Forest) were independently applied to represent non-linear species-environment relationships using terrain variables derived from multibeam bathymetry (slope, geomorphologic category, rugosity, aspect, backscatter). Relevant differences between the three models were observed. Nonetheless, the predicted areas where CWCs should be found with higher probabilities coincided for the three methods when a lower spatial scale was considered. According to the models, CWCs are most likely to be found on the medium to steeply sloping, rough walls of the southern flank of the canyon, aligning with the known CWC ecology acquired from previous studies in the area. As a final step, a probabilistic predictive ensemble has been produced merging the outcomes of the three models considered, providing a more robust prediction for the three species. The main insight is that important discrepancies can arise in using different species distribution models, especially when high spatial resolutions are considered. This could in part be the result of the different statistical assumptions behind each of the models. We suggest that a more reliable prediction could be obtained by merging models into spatial ensembles, able to reduce differences and associated uncertainties, showing hence a strong potential as an objective approach in the planning and management of natural resources

2nd Deep-Water Circulation Congress: The Contourite Log-book, 10-12 September 2014, Ghent, Belgium.-- 2 pages, 1 figure, In this study we present the main morphological characteristics of the West Melilla and Cabliers CWC Mounds (Eastern Alboran Sea) and include the preliminary results from the analysis of four gravity cores collected in the area during the GATEWAY MD194 Cruise. The West Melilla Mound field is composed of two different clusters which may have different ages. The Cabliers Mound is a 15km long CWC ridge, where large living CWC reefs, almost unique for the Mediterranean Sea, have been observed on its summit through ROV videos, thriving under moderate current regimes and intense sediment transport. High density of CWC frameworks and strong variability of CWC species suggest that the Cabliers Mound corresponds to a peculiar feature compared to the other mounds of this region. The acquired data represent a step forward in understanding the evolution of the Alboran Giant CWC Mounds in their sedimentary environment, We acknowledge the EU FP7 Marie Curie IEF Action "Geo-Habit" (GA29874) and the ERC Starting Grant Project "CODEMAP" (Grant no 258482)

- Abstract
Recent advances in seafloor and subsurface imaging allow accurately mapping and characterizing the kinematic pattern and the style of deformation of submarine faults with unprecedented detail to better assess seismic and tsunami hazards in coastal areas. The Alboran Sea is a Neogene basin generated by crustal extension associated with the subduction in the Gibraltar Arc. At present, several fault systems absorb part of the strain related to the NW-SE convergence (4-5.5 mm/yr) between the African and Eurasian plates. Consequently, the Alboran Sea shows a significant seismic activity. New high-resolution bathymetric and seismic data reveal the presence of poorly known pervasive fault systems in the central part of the Alboran Sea, the Averroes Fault (AF) and the North Averroes Faults (NAFs). These are secondary fault systems located between two large active faults, the Carboneras and Yusuf/Alboran Ridge faults, and represent a hitherto unrecognized seismogenic potential. The WNW-ESE trending AF and NAFs, which may have evolved since the Lower Pliocene (4.57 Ma), are subvertical right-lateral strike-slip active faults since: a) are offsetting the Quaternary sedimentary units and deforming the seafloor; and b) produce a right-lateral displacement of the northwestern margin of the Alboran Channel and across the Adra Ridge North. Given that the AF and NAFs have formed in a continental crust and that are located in a zone surrounded by some of the main active faults in the Alboran Sea, we postulate that these fault systems have been developed into a distributed dextral strike-slip shear zone with the local bulk shear striking approximately N90º. Considering their surface length they could generate earthquakes with magnitudes (Mw) between 6.3 and 7.2, but reaching 7.6 when AF and Yusuf Fault are linked. The high resolution bathymetry map has allowed us measuring lateral offsets produced by the AF and NAFs. Assuming that these displacements have been accumulated during the l

Evaluating the prevalence and the degree of steatosis in geriatric patients (65 to 85 years of age) with Metabolic Syndrome (defined by ATP III criteria); searching for metabolic factors which are predictive for the degree of steatosis; evaluating the efficacy of Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA) for 6 months in the treatment of patients with NAFLD or NASH.We studied 87 geriatric patients with Metabolic Syndrome. Steatosis was diagnosed and graded by laboratory assessment and ultrasonography, method based on the determination of liver/kidney ratio through grey-scale intensity, which was calculated as an index of the severity of the steatosis: it could oscilates from 0 (none) to 3 (severe). We randomized the geriatric patients into two groups: Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA)-treated group (n=43 pz) and diet-treated group (1200 Kcal/die for female, 1500 Kcal/die for male) (n=44 pz), for a period of 6 months. BMI, principal symptoms, liver function, blood lipids, ultrasonography liver were evaluated respectively before and after treatment. The prevalence of steatosis was 100% (26 mild steatosis cases, 38 moderate cases and 23 severe cases) in our patients with Metabolic Syndrome. Of the 43 subjects assigned to receive 300-450 mg/d of UDCA and diet, the hepatic steatosis index decreased on the average, of the 75%. Serum AST, ALT and γ-GT decreased significantly at 3 months already (p0.001).UDCA improves liver enzymes and ultrasonography immaging in geriatric patients with NAFLD or NASH. Unexpectedly, UDCA has resulted in beneficial effects on glycemic control and insulin sensitivity.

Geodinámica - Abstract
Recently acquired swath-bathymetry data and high-resolution seismic reflection profiles offshore Adra (Almería, Spain) reveal the surficial expression of a NW–SE trending 20 km-long fault, which we termed the Adra Fault. Seismic imaging across the structure depicts a subvertical fault reaching the seafloor surface and slightly dipping to the NE showing an along-axis structural variability. Our new data suggest normal displacement of the uppermost units with probably a lateral component. Radiocarbon dating of a gravity core located in the area indicates that seafloor sediments are of Holocene age, suggesting present-day tectonic activity. The NE Alboran Sea area is characterized by significant low-magnitude earthquakes and by historical records of moderate magnitude, such as the Mw = 6.1 1910 Adra Earthquake. The location, dimension and kinematics of the Adra Fault agree with the fault solution and magnitude of the 1910 Adra Earthquake, whose moment tensor analysis indicates normal-dextral motion. The fault seismic parameters indicate that the Adra Fault is a potential source of large magnitude (Mw = 6.5) earthquakes, which represents an unreported seismic hazard for the neighbouring coastal areas.

- Abstract
A sand ridge field with crests oriented NE–SW (52°) located between 55 and 85 m water depth on the Valencia continental shelf (Spain) was mapped with multibeam swath bathymetry and characterized with seismic profiling and sediment sampling. Boundary-layer hydrodynamic measurements conducted over a sand ridge at 66 m depth show evidence of wave and current sediment resuspension during a major storm event with a three-year recurrence period. From the measured intrawave sediment concentration profiles it is shown that the suspended sediment time evolution is related not only to mean currents but also to the wave field. The near-bottom shear stress generated during storm conditions reached around 1 N/m2 and was able to resuspend and transport sandy and muddy sediments for more than 32 h. The total suspended sediment transport in a layer of 1 m above the bottom was around 4000 kg per meter width and directed 160°. It is argued that these sand ridges were developed in a shallow environment and there is no evidence of present-day ridge migration or morphological degradation. It is hypothesized that sediment dynamics affecting sand ridges during storms favors the maintenance of their morphology.

- Abstract
Coarse carbonate sediments of cold-water coral (CWC) mounds are almost exclusively produced by scleractinian corals and associated calcifying organisms. Due to the sensitivity of several species to environmental changes, variations of benthic carbonate associations (BCA) through time can provide important insights on mound development stages. This study focuses on the BCA collected, through box- and gravity cores, from CWC mounds located in the Melilla Mound Field (MMF) and Pen Duick Escarpment (PDE). The main goal of this work is to characterize the composition of modern and fossil BCA and to relate its variation through time to oceanographic changes at regional and/or global scale. Our preliminary results are based on the analysis of samples collected during the MD 194 cruise and previous oceanographic expeditions (MD 169 and Belgica 09/14b). Observations on modern fauna from the PDE mounds have been carried out also on ROV videos collected during the Belgica 07/13 and 09/14b cruises. The modern BCA of the two examined mound areas are rather different. The PDE mound biocoenoses are characterized by scarce and low-diverse calcifying organisms that colonise dense (mostly fossil) dendrophylliid frameworks or rubble sparse in mud-dominated sediment. The modern MMF BCA are more diversified, dominated by Madrepora oculata and particularly rich in molluscs and bryozoans. Similarities found in the faunistic assemblages of the examined sediment cores hint at comparable environmental conditions in the past that favoured the development of Lophelia-dominated communities on both sides of the Gibraltar Strait
