Diffusion models (DPMs) have demonstrated remarkable performance in image generation, often times outperforming other generative models. Since their introduction, the powerful noise-to-image denoising pipeline has been extended to various discriminative tasks, including image segmentation. In case of medical imaging, often times the images are large 3D scans, where segmenting one image using DPMs become extremely inefficient due to large memory consumption and time consuming iterative sampling process. In this work, we propose a novel conditional generative modeling framework (LDSeg) that performs diffusion in latent space for medical image segmentation. Our proposed framework leverages the learned inherent low-dimensional latent distribution of the target object shapes and source image embeddings. The conditional diffusion in latent space not only ensures accurate n-D image segmentation for multi-label objects, but also mitigates the major underlying problems of the traditional DPM based segmentation: (1) large memory consumption, (2) time consuming sampling process and (3) unnatural noise injection in forward/reverse process. LDSeg achieved state-of-the-art segmentation accuracy on three medical image datasets with different imaging modalities. Furthermore, we show that our proposed model is significantly more robust to noises, compared to the traditional deterministic segmentation models, which can be potential in solving the domain shift problems in the medical imaging domain. This paper documents our characterization study and practices for serving text-to-image requests with stable diffusion models in production. We first comprehensively analyze inference request traces for commercial text-to-image applications. It commences with our observation that add-on modules, i.e., ControlNets and LoRAs, that augment the base stable diffusion models, are ubiquitous in generating images for commercial applications. Despite their efficacy, these add-on modules incur high loading overhead, prolong the serving latency, and swallow up expensive GPU resources. Driven by our characterization study, we present SwiftDiffusion, a system that efficiently generates high-quality images using stable diffusion models and add-on modules. To achieve this, SwiftDiffusion reconstructs the existing text-to-image serving workflow by identifying the opportunities for parallel computation and distributing ControlNet computations across multiple GPUs. Further, SwiftDiffusion thoroughly analyzes the dynamics of image generation and develops techniques to eliminate the overhead associated with LoRA loading and patching while preserving the image quality. Last, SwiftDiffusion proposes specialized optimizations in the backbone architecture of the stable diffusion models, which are also compatible with the efficient serving of add-on modules. Compared to state-of-the-art text-to-image serving systems, SwiftDiffusion reduces serving latency by up to 5x and improves serving throughput by up to 2x without compromising image quality.

Researchers have shown significant correlations among segmented objects in various medical imaging modalities and disease related pathologies. Several studies showed that using hand crafted features for disease prediction neglects the immense possibility to use latent features from deep learning (DL) models which may reduce the overall accuracy of differential diagnosis. However, directly using classification or segmentation models on medical to learn latent features opt out robust feature selection and may lead to overfitting. To fill this gap, we propose a novel feature selection technique using the latent space of a segmentation model that can aid diagnosis. We evaluated our method in differentiating a rare cardiac disease: Takotsubo Syndrome (TTS) from the ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) using echocardiogram videos (echo). TTS can mimic clinical features of STEMI in echo and extremely hard to distinguish. Our approach shows promising results in differential diagnosis of TTS with 82% diagnosis accuracy beating the previous state-of-the-art (SOTA) approach. Diffusion models have shown impressive performance for image generation, often times outperforming other generative models. Since their introduction, researchers have extended the powerful noise-to-image denoising pipeline to discriminative tasks, including image segmentation. In this work we propose a conditional score-based generative modeling framework for medical image segmentation which relies on a parametric surface representation for the segmentation masks. The surface re-parameterization allows the direct application of standard diffusion theory, as opposed to when the mask is represented as a binary mask. Moreover, we adapted an extended variant of the diffusion technique known as the "cold-diffusion" where the diffusion model can be constructed with deterministic perturbations instead of Gaussian noise, which facilitates significantly faster convergence in the reverse diffusion. We evaluated our method on the segmentation of the left ventricle from 65 transthoracic echocardiogram videos (2230 echo image frames) and compared its performance to the most popular and widely used image segmentation models. Influence prediction plays a crucial role in the academic community. The amount of scholars' influence determines whether their work will be accepted by others. Most existing research focuses on predicting one paper's citation count after a period or identifying the most influential papers among the massive candidates, without concentrating on an individual paper's negative or positive impact on its authors. Thus, this study aims to formulate the prediction problem to identify whether one paper can increase scholars' influence or not, which can provide feedback to the authors before they publish their papers. First, we presented the self-adapted ACC (Average Annual Citation Counts) metric to measure authors' impact yearly based on their annual published papers, paper citation counts, and contributions in each paper. Then, we proposed the RD-GAT (Reference-Depth Graph Attention Network) model to integrate heterogeneous graph information from different depth of references by assigning attention coefficients on them. Experiments on AMiner dataset demonstrated that the proposed ACC metrics could represent the authors influence effectively, and the RD-GAT model is more efficiently on the academic citation network, and have stronger robustness against the overfitting problem compared with the baseline models. Tracking cells in 3D at high speed continues to attract extensive attention for many biomedical applications, such as monitoring immune cell migration and observing tumor metastasis in flowing blood vessels. Here, we propose a deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) based method to retrieve the 3D locations of the fluorophores from a single 2D image captured by a conventional wide-field fluorescence microscope without any hardware modification. The reported method converts the challenging 3D localization from an ill-posed model-based fitting problem, especially with dense samples and low signal-to-noise ratio, to a solvable multi-label classification problem through two cascaded CNNs, where deep learning technique has a great advantage over other algorithms. Compared with traditional kernel-fitting methods, the proposed method achieves more accurate and robust localization of multiple objects across a much larger axial range, which is validated by both simulation and experimental results on 3D distributed fluorescent beads. This paper presents a novel approach for video-based person re-identification using multiple Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Unlike previous work, we intend to extract a compact yet discriminative appearance representation from several frames rather than the whole sequence. Specifically, given a video, the representative frames are selected based on the walking profile of consecutive frames. A multiple CNN architecture incorporated with feature pooling is proposed to learn and compile the features of the selected representative frames into a compact description about the pedestrian for identification. Experiments are conducted on benchmark datasets to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over existing person re-identification approaches.

Measuring dependence between two random variables is very important, and critical in many applied areas such as variable selection, brain network analysis. However, we do not know what kind of functional relationship is between two covariates, which requires the dependence measure to be equitable. That is, it gives similar scores to equally noisy relationship of different types. In fact, the dependence score is a continuous random variable taking values in $[0,1]$, thus it is theoretically impossible to give similar scores.
