Collaboration and social networking are key elements for fostering innovation in organizations. They are also essential components of building a knowledge management strategy for an organization. “Social Networking: The Essence of Innovation” will highlight concepts, issues, applications, and trends toward applying social networking, knowledge management, and collaborative principles for increasing innovation. Social network analysis will also be briefly discussed as a way to map knowledge flows and gaps in organizations.

To assist with preparing faculty research grant proposals for our next round of grant proposal submissions (the Call for Faculty Research Grant Proposals for Spring 2013 and Summer 2013 will be issued on October 1, 2012), Dr. Liebowitz will present some helpful tips for aiding faculty in developing and writing their faculty research grant proposals. These will include best practices developed from both the experiences of the UMUC Faculty Research Grant Committee, as well as useful heuristics from the experiences of others. Those who are interested in submitting grant proposals for the next round are strongly encouraged to attend the WebEx.

This is a summary of the “Emerging Technologies for Online Courses” survey results during April 2010. The focus of the survey was to better understand which emerging technologies are being used or will be used in the next 2-3 years for online teaching. Most of the 90 responses were from the Maryland Distance Learning Association listserv, DEOS listserv, and through the authors’ personal contacts in the e-learning world.

Today's organizations need to be adaptive and agile in order to deal with the rapidly changing environment and competitive pressures. Part of the challenge in doing so is examining the knowledge flows and knowledge gaps within the organizations, especially cross-generational knowledge flows. This paper is an extension of the authors' previous work in cross-generational knowledge flow research in edge organizations. Specifically, the current research is applying ontologies in this domain to then construct a survey instrument for application in two edge-like case organizations (one in the military and one in industry). Social/organizational network analysis is then used to gain insight into cross-generational knowledge flows in these organizations in order to recommend findings on the critical success factors needed to ensure positive cross-generational knowledge flows in edge organizations., Presented at the International Command and Control Research and Technology Symposium (13th) (ICCRTS 2008) held in Seattle, WA on 17-19 Jun 2008. As the graying workforce increases and the work patterns of our younger workers are more mobile, knowledge retention, attrition, and transfer become key determinants of the longevity of an organization. This is particularly true in edge organizations, which thrive on adaptability and agility to survive. In order for workforce development and succession planning to be effective in edge organizations, cross-generational knowledge flows are paramount towards achieving an innovative and agile organization. Very little research has looked at cross-generational knowledge flows, particularly in the context of edge organizations. The focus of the research in progress looks at: (1) examining how cross-generational knowledge flows affect edge organizations in terms of organizational effectiveness and organizational forms, and (2) developing and testing a model to enhance cross-generational knowledge flows in edge organizations., Presented at the International Command and Control Research and Technology Symposium (12th) held in Newport, RI on 19-21 Jun 2007.
