Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic heightened risks for individuals with hematological malignancies due to compromised immune systems, leading to more severe outcomes and increased mortality. While interventions like vaccines, targeted antivirals, and monoclonal antibodies have been effective for the general population, their benefits for these patients may not be as pronounced. Methods: The EPICOVIDEHA registry (National Clinical Trials Identifier, NCT04733729) gathers COVID-19 data from hematological malignancy patients since the pandemic's start worldwide. It spans various global locations, allowing comprehensive analysis over the first three years (2020–2022). Findings: The EPICOVIDEHA registry collected data from January 2020 to December 2022, involving 8767 COVID-19 cases in hematological malignancy patients from 152 centers across 41 countries, with 42% being female. Over this period, there was a significant reduction in critical infections and an overall decrease in mortality from 29% to 4%. However, hospitalization, particularly in the ICU, remained associated with higher mortality rates. Factors contributing to increased mortality included age, multiple comorbidities, active malignancy at COVID-19 onset, pulmonary symptoms, and hospitalization. On the positive side, vaccination with one to two doses or three or more doses, as well as encountering COVID-19 in 2022, were associated with improved survival. Interpretation: Patients with hematological malignancies still face elevated risks, despite reductions in critical infections and overall mortality rates over time. Hospitalization, especially in ICUs, remains a significant concern. The study underscores the importance of vaccination and the timing of COVID-19 exposure in 2022 for enhanced survival in this patient group. Abstract

We discuss the ground state entanglement of the $E\otimes\epsilon$ Jahn-Teller model in the presence of a strong transverse magnetic field as a function of the vibronic coupling strength. A complete characterization is given of the phenomenon of entanglement sharing in a system composed by a qubit coupled to two bosonic modes. Using the residual $I$-tangle, we find that three-partite entanglement is significantly present in the system in the parameter region near the bifurcation point of the corresponding classical model.

We discuss the ground state entanglement of a bi-partite system, composed by a qubit strongly interacting with an oscillator mode, as a function of the coupling strenght, the transition frequency and the level asymmetry of the qubit. This is done in the adiabatic regime in which the time evolution of the qubit is much faster than the oscillator one. We present a few simple observations on the occurrence of $\pi$-condensation in Nuclei, aimed at clarifying the nature of the $\pi$-condensation implied by the coherent nuclear $\pi$-N-$\Delta$ interaction, proposed in 1990 to explain the puzzling emergence of the Shell-Model. We show that such condensation is totally unrelated to the one proposed by A. B. Abstract

Introduction: Quality in medical care must be measured in order to be improved. Trauma management is part of health care, and by definition, it must be checked constantly. The only way to measure quality and outcomes is to systematically accrue data and analyze them. Material and methods: A systematic revision of the literature about quality indicators in trauma associated to an international consensus conference Results: An internationally approved base core set of 82 trauma quality indicators was obtained: Indicators were divided into 6 fields: prevention, structure, process, outcome, post-traumatic management, and society integrational effects. Conclusion: Present trauma quality indicator core set represents the result of an international effort aiming to provide a useful tool in quality evaluation and improvement. Further improvement may only be possible through international trauma registry development. This will allow for huge international data accrual permitting to evaluate results and compare outcomes.

Abstract

Background and purpose Rehabilitation plays a central role in stroke recovery. Besides conventional therapy, technological treatments have become available. The effectiveness and appropriateness of technological rehabilitation are not yet well defined; hence, research focused on different variables impacting recovery is needed. Results from the literature identified cognitive reserve (CR) as a variable impacting on the cognitive outcome. In this paper, the aim was to evaluate whether CR influences the motor outcome in patients after stroke treated with conventional or robotic therapy and whether it may influence one treatment rather than another. Methods Seventy-five stroke patients were enrolled in five Italian neurological rehabilitation centres. Patients were assigned either to a robotic group, rehabilitation by means of robotic devices, or to a conventional group, where a traditional approach was used. Patients were evaluated at baseline and after rehabilitation treatment of 6 weeks through the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT), the Motricity Index (MI) and the Barthel Index (BI). CR was assessed at baseline using the Cognitive Reserve Index (CRI) questionnaire. Results Considering all patients, a weak correlation was found between the CRI related to leisure time and MI evolution (r = 0.276; P = 0.02). Amongst the patients who performed a robotic rehabilitation, a moderate correlation emerged between the CRI related to working activities and MI evolution (r = 0.422; P = 0.02). Conclusions Our results suggest that CR may influence the motor outcome. For each patient, CR and its subcategories should be considered in the choice between conventional and robotic treatment.

Abstract

Three techniques for the estimate of rain rate from infrared satellite images have been examined and modified to be used over the western Mediterranean Sea. An attempt to optimize these techniques has been made by comparing the remotely-sensed precipitation with in situ data, obtained from the rain gauge network over Sardinia, for three different seasons of 1988. The results obtained so far clearly reveal the limitations of infrared remote sensing techniques when applied to precipitation retrievals. However, these results give the possibility of gaining some useful insights on the general problem and show that infrared remote sensing techniques can give acceptable area-time averages of precipitation which are useful for climatological studies.

Based on the above idea, 37 GHz observations with a 30 km FOV from SMMR and SSM/I are selected to develop an empirical method for the estimation of rain rate. In this method, the statistics of the observed T sub b's at 37 GHz in a rain storm are related to the rain rate statistics in that storm. The underestimation of rain rate, arising from the inability of the radiometer to respond sensitively to rain rate above a given threshold is rectified in this technique with the aid of two parameters that depend on the total water vapor content in the atmosphere. The retrieved rain rates compare favorably with radar observations and monthly mean global maps of rain derived from this technique over the oceans.

Abstract

On December 2010 a giant storm erupted in Saturn's North hemisphere. A giant vortex formed in the storm wake and persisted after the principal outburst exhausted on July 2011. The vortex had been imaged several times by the Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) on board the Cassini probe starting from May 2011 and it was still present in observations recorded on June 2013. In this work we have analyzed the vortex data recorded by the visual channel of the spectrometer (VIMS-V) in August 2011 and January 2012. An inverse model, based on the Bayesian approach and using the Gauss-Newton iterative method to minimize the cost function, has been developed to analyze those data. The model takes advantage of the results of a supporting forward radiative transfer model which relies on the assumptions of plane parallel atmosphere, multiple scattering, Mie theory to compute particles single scattering properties, and molecular scattering adapted to Saturn's atmosphere. Applying the inverse model we could retrieve the microphysical and geometrical properties of the clouds and hazes overlying the vortex and produce spatial maps for each retrieved parameter. Thanks to this study, the vertical structure of the hazes in this region has been quantitatively addressed for the first time. The comparative analysis of the results from the two observations seems to suggest that in 6 months the atmospheric dynamics, responsible for the formation and subsistence of the vortex, is weakening and the atmosphere is returning to a more stationary state. In addition, we suggest a correction for the imaginary part of the refractive index of the tropopause haze. This new value, that allows a better convergence between observed and simulated spectra, does not yet identify a composition of the haze and further investigation is needed to understand the real nature of the need for such a modification.

Abstract

This work is focused on the retrieval of the microphysical and geometrical properties of the clouds and hazes overlying the giant vortex observed in 2011 at Saturn, by the Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) on board of Cassini. The retrieval algorithm is based on the optimal estimation technique [15] and takes advantage of a forward radiative transfer model developed by adapting the LibRadtran code [13] to the atmosphere of Saturn. For each of the retrieved parameters - that are effective radii, top pressures and total number densities for each considered deck - a 2D spatial map has been produced.

Abstract

In this study the microphysical, optical and geometrical parameters obtained by Colosimo et al [5] to represent the clouds observed in the South Pole atmosphere of Saturn are used in a radiative transfer model to simulate the corresponding observations from Cassini/VIMS VIS-channel data in the wavelength range 0.84-1 micron. The disagreement between simulated and observed spectra has been interpreted taking into account the different nature of the measurements. Taking into account possible sources of discrepancies, an adjustment of the model parameters is suggested. The proposed values, reduce the difference between the simulations and the measurements from ~ 63% down to ~ 17%.

Abstract

Fauna Europaea provides a public web-service with an index of scientific names (including synonyms) of all living European land and freshwater animals, their geographical distribution at country level (up to the Urals, excluding the Caucasus region), and some additional information. The Fauna Europaea project covers about 230,000 taxonomic names, including 130,000 accepted species and 14,000 accepted subspecies, which is much more than the originally projected number of 100,000 species. This represents a huge effort by more than 400 contributing specialists throughout Europe and is a unique (standard) reference suitable for many users in science, government, industry, nature conservation and education. Coleoptera represent a huge assemblage of holometabolous insects, including as a whole more than 200 recognized families and some 400,000 described species worldwide. Basic information is summarized on their biology, ecology, economic relevance, and estimated number of undescribed species worldwide. Little less than 30,000 species are listed from Europe. The Coleoptera 2 section of the Fauna Europaea database (Archostemata, Myxophaga, Adephaga and Polyphaga excl. the series Elateriformia, Scarabaeiformia, Staphyliniformia and the superfamily Curculionoidea) encompasses 80 families (according to the previously accepted family-level systematic framework) and approximately 13,000 species. Tabulations included a complete list of the families dealt with, the number of species in each, the names of all involved specialists, and, when possible, an estimate of the gaps in terms of total number of species at an European level. A list of some recent useful references is appended. Most families included in the Coleoptera 2 Section have been updated in the most recent release of the Fauna Europaea index, or are ready to be updated as soon as the FaEu data management environment completes its migration from Zoological Museum Amsterdam to Berlin Museum fü r Naturkunde.

"Tradicionalmente, la política de desarrollo y la cooperación para el mismo se han visto como áreas reservadas a los organismos internacionales y a los Estados. El concepto mismo de desarrollo ha evolucionado desde los años cincuenta. Esta evolución, unida al impacto negativo de la deuda y del ajuste estructural en el nivel de vida de los países en desarrollo (PED), a la creciente concentración de la riqueza como consecuencia de la globalización, al retroceso del Estado y la expansión de la democratización, ha dado a las organizaciones no gubernamentales (ONG) una inusitada relevancia al ser capaces, entre otras cosas, de brindar servicios sociales donde el Estado ya no lo hace y de ejercer cabildeos en favor de temas de interés global, como la ecología, la ayuda a desplazados, etc. En este documento se revisa cuál es la actitud de instituciones de importancia decisiva en los programas de cooperación para el desarrollo (Banco Mundial y Unión Europea) y de agencias de desarrollo de algunos donadores, para mostrar que tanto conceptual como prácticamente las ONG se han convertido en actores indispensables si se quiere alcanzar los objetivos de los programas de lucha contra la pobreza."

37. Retrieval of calibration parameters for ground based Sun-Sky radiometric measurements of columnar water vapor using operational surface meteorological measurements

Abstract

[ABSTRACT]Sun-sky radiometers are instruments created for aerosol study, but they can measure in the water vapour absorption band allowing the estimation of columnar water vapour W in clear sky simultaneously with aerosol characteristics, with high temporal resolution. A new methodology, cheap and easy to implement, is presented for estimating calibration parameters (i.e. characteristic parameters of the atmospheric transmittance and solar calibration constant) directly from the sun-sky radiometers measurements. To initiate the proposed methodology some seasonal independent measurements of columnar water vapour taken over a large range of solar zenith angle simultaneously with the sun-sky radiometer measurements, are needed. In this work the Surface Humidity Method (SHM) was developed allowing to initiate the procedure with columnar water vapour estimated by standard surface meteorological observation (temperature, pressure and relative humidity). The time pattern of columnar water vapour from sun-sky radiometer was compared with simultaneous measurements from microwave radiometer and radiosondings showing respectively a total correlation of 0.98, 0.96 and a total median difference of 2.24 mm and -0.65 mm. The accordance with radiosondings was found within the uncertainty of the methodology (varying from 10 to 16 %) independently on the amount of atmospheric water vapour. Results were also validated against the columnar water vapour estimated by using the procedure adopted by the University of Uchiyama, that is similar to the one adopted by AERONET network, and consists in retrieving the characteristic parameters from a fitting procedure of simulated transmittance versus the product mW, were m is the optical airmass. Also in this case the accordance against microwave radiometer and radiosondings is good for different water vapour classes, but we like to emphasize that the introduction of a water vapour dependence in the characteristic parameters of the atmospheric transmittance, improved the agreement with the Microwave Radiometer measurements especially in the cases with the lowest water vapour content.

39. Measuring spectral actinic flux and irradiance:Experimental results from the Actinic Flux Determination from Measurements of Irradiance (ADMIRA) project

Abstract

Results are presented from the Actinic Flux Determination from Measurements of Irradiance (ADMIRA) campaign to measure spectral global UV irradiance and actinic flux at the ground, beneath an atmosphere well defined by supporting measurements. Actinic flux is required to calculate photolysis rates for atmospheric chemistry, yet most spectral UV measurements are of irradiance. This work represents the first part of a project to provide algorithms for converting irradiances to actinic fluxes with specified uncertainties. The campaign took place in northern Greece in August 2000 and provided an intercomparison of UV spectroradiometers measuring different radiation parameters, as well as a comprehensive radiation and atmospheric dataset. The independently calibrated spectroradiometers measuring irradiance and actinic flux agreed to within 5%, while measurements of spectral direct irradiance differed by 9%. Relative agreement for all parameters proved to be very stable during the campaign. A polarization problem in the Brewer spectrophotometer was identified as a problem in making radiance distribution measurements with this instrument. At UV wavelengths actinic fluxes F were always greater than the corresponding irradiance E by a factor between 1.4 and 2.6. The value of the ratio F : E depended on wavelength, solar zenith angle, and the optical properties of the atmosphere. Both the wavelength and solar zenith angle dependency of the ratio decreased when the scattering in the atmosphere increased and the direct beam proportion of global irradiance decreased, as expected. Two contrasting days, one clear and one with higher aerosol and some cloud, are compared to illustrate behavior of the F : E ratio.

Abstract

By exposing Igrov-1 human ovarian cancer cells to increasing concentrations of Ecteinascidin-743 (ET-743), either for a short or prolonged time, we obtained sublines resistant to ET-743 which overexpress Pgp. The most resistant clone (Igrov-1/25 ET) was evaluated for biological and pharmacological characterizations. The increased Pgp levels of Igrov-1/25 ET were not due to amplification of the mdr-1 gene but to increased mRNA levels. No increase in other multidrug resistance-related proteins such as MRP or LRP was observed in Igrov-1/25 ET. The IC50 values of ET-743 against Igrov-1/25 ET was approximately 50 times higher than the parental cell line. Resistance was not reversed while maintaining the cell line in drug-free medium for at least 24 months. Igrov-1/25 ET was cross-resistant to Doxorubicin and VP16 while it was equally sensitive to L-PAM, MNNG, CPT and only marginally less sensitive to Cis-DDP and Oxaliplatin compared to the parental cell line. Igrov-1/25 ET exposed to Doxorubicin retained this drug much less, mainly because of a more efficient drug efflux. The cyclosporine analogue SDZ PSC-833 reversed the resistance of Igrov-1/25 ET to ET-743, without any enhancement of the drug activity against the parental Igrov-1 cell line. Igrov-1/25 ET exhibits typical features of cell lines overexpressing the mdr-1 gene and can be a potentially useful tool in selecting ET-743 non-cross-resistant analogues as well as to investigate methods to counteract resistance to this drug.
