3. Contrast and Clustering: Learning Neighborhood Pair Representation for Source-free Domain Adaptation

Abstract

Unsupervised domain adaptation uses source data from different distributions to solve the problem of classifying data from unlabeled target domains. However, conventional methods require access to source data, which often raise concerns about data privacy. In this paper, we consider a more practical but challenging setting where the source domain data is unavailable and the target domain data is unlabeled. Specifically, we address the domain discrepancy problem from the perspective of contrastive learning. The key idea of our work is to learn a domain-invariant feature by 1) performing clustering directly in the original feature space with nearest neighbors; 2) constructing truly hard negative pairs by extended neighbors without introducing additional computational complexity; and 3) combining noise-contrastive estimation theory to gain computational advantage. We conduct careful ablation studies and extensive experiments on three common benchmarks: VisDA, Office-Home, and Office-31. 8. Multimodal Decoupled Distillation Graph Neural Network for Emotion Recognition in Conversation

Abstract

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have attracted increasing attentions for multimodal Emotion Recognition in Conversation (ERC) due to their good performance in contextual understanding. However, most existing GNN-based methods suffer from two challenges: 1) How to explore and propagate appropriate information in a conversational graph. Typical GNNs in ERC neglect to mine the emotion commonality and discrepancy in the local neighborhood, leading to learn similar embbedings for connected nodes. However, the embeddings of these connected nodes are supposed to be distinguishable as they belong to different speakers with different emotions. 2) Most existing works apply simple concatenation or co-occurrence prior for modality combination, failing to fully capture the emotional information of multiple modalities in relationship modeling. In this paper, we propose a multimodal Decoupled Distillation Graph Neural Network (D2GNN) to address the above challenges. Specifically, D2GNN decouples the input features into emotion-aware and emotion-agnostic ones on the emotion category-level, aiming to capture emotion commonality and implicit emotion information, respectively. Moreover, we design a new message passing mechanism to separately propagate emotion-aware and -agnostic knowledge between nodes according to speaker dependency in two GNN-based modules, exploring the correlations of utterances and alleviating the similarities of embeddings. Furthermore, a multimodal distillation unit is performed to obtain the distinguishable embeddings by aggregating unimodal decoupled features. Abstract

Stone matrix asphalt and asphalt concrete mixture with 13.2 mm nominal maximum aggregate size (named SMA13 and AC13, respectively) are widely used in the surface course of asphalt pavement in China. Generally, the pavement performance of SMA13 is superior to that of AC13, while the cost of the former is significantly higher than that of the latter. The objective of this paper was to develop a new hot mix asphalt (named SMAC13) whose performance and cost are between SMA13 and AC13. A boundary sieve size (BSS) of 2.36 mm was selected between fine and coarse aggregates. Based on the union set of aggregate gradation ranges of SMA13 and AC13, the family of gradation curves in the forms of S shapes were designed in terms of the BSS passing rate. According to the evaluation of the skeleton interlock of coarse aggregate of the gradation curve family, the aggregate gradation range of SMAC13 was determined. Also, the performance of three kinds of asphalt mixtures were compared through laboratory tests. The results indicated that SMA13 shows the best rutting resistance, followed by SMAC13 then AC13, while in terms of low-temperature performance in resistance to cracking, the sequence is SMAC13, AC13, and SMA13. The sequence of water stability is AC13, SMAC13, and SMA13. Furthermore, the cost of SMAC13 is 25% less than that of SMA13. Therefore, SMAC13 can be used as an alternative for the surface course of asphalt pavement in terms of performance and cost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study examines the impact of bio-organic fertilizers on the physiological characteristics and leaf nutrient content of "Qi-Nan" agarwood seedlings. The aim is to provide a theoretical foundation for the efficient cultivation of "Qi-Nan". The experiment was conducted under field conditions using a Randomized complete block design. The control group received no fertilization, while the three fertilizer-treated groups received vermicompost, sheep manure, or microbial organic fertilizer. The results indicate that the application of bio-organic fertilizer significantly promoted the growth of plant height and diameter, increased the contents of soluble proteins, soluble sugar, chlorophyll, and leaf nutrients; and decreased the contents of free proline, peroxidase, malondialdehyde, and other stress indices. Redundancy analysis showed that the main factors affecting the seedlings height and diameter were free proline, chlorophyll, total nitrogen, and total potassium. Principal component analysis and membership function analysis revealed significant variations in growth, physiological characteristics, and nutrient content among the three fertilizer groups and the control group, with vermicompost > microbial organic fertilizer > sheep manure > no fertilization. In conclusion, biological organic fertilizer significantly promotes the growth of "Qi-Nan" seedlings, and vermicompost is the most effective fertilizer in this experiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Agarwood is a highly economically important medicinal herb with widespread uses, however, the difference between the biological activities of artificial and wild agarwood is unclear. In this study, the alcohol-soluble extracts of agarwood produced by fungi and natural agarwood were used to determine the differences between the overall biological activities. The antioxidant ability (the clearance rates of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS+) radicals, and total reducing power), anti-acetylcholinesterase, and anti-α-glucosidase activity were determined by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. The results indicated that with 2 mg/mL alcohol-soluble extracts, the scavenging DPPH radical rates of the artificial agarwood samples were 93.74–102.31% of that of the wild agarwood, and the ABTS+ radical clearance rates of the artificial agarwood samples were 75.38–95.52% of that of the natural agarwood. With 3.5 mg/mL alcohol-soluble extracts, the artificial agarwood samples had a total reducing power of 63.07–80.29% of that of the wild agarwood. With 4 mg/mL alcohol-soluble extract, the acetylcholinesterase activity inhibition rates of the artificial agarwood samples were 102.56–109.16% of that of the wild agarwood. With 1 mg/mL alcohol soluble extracts, the α-glucosidase effect inhibitions rates of the artificial agarwood samples were 68.32–100.39% of that of the wild agarwood.

Abstract

Heartwood has a high economic value because of its natural durability, beautiful color, special aroma, and richness in active ingredients used in traditional Chinese medicine. However, the mechanism of heartwood formation remains unclear. Dalbergia odorifera was selected as the object of research to analyze this variation in the chemical composition of sapwood, transition zone, and heartwood as well as to elucidate the relationship between this variation and the formation of heartwood. The variation of secondary metabolites was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, the variation of lignin was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and ultraviolet visible spectrophotometry, and the variation law of mineral elements was analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results demonstrated that contents of characteristic secondary metabolites in Dalbergia odorifera were mainly distributed in heartwood (84.3–96.8%), increased from the outer to inner layers of the xylem, and sudden changes occurred in the transition zone (the fourth growth ring). The Dalbergia odorifera lignin can be identified as typical “syringyl–guaiacyl (S–G)” lignin, and the color darkened from the outside to the inside. The results demonstrated that there were more benzene rings and conjugated C=O structures in the heartwood. Additionally, the variation of minerals in the xylem was related to elemental types, the average concentrations of Mg, Ca, Fe and Sr were higher in the heartwood than in the sapwood, whereas the concentrations of K and Zn were higher in the sapwood than in the heartwood owing to the reabsorption of elements. The concentrations of Na and Cu were similar in the heartwood and sapwood. The composition and structural characteristics of secondary metabolites, lignin, and mineral elements in the three typical xylem regions (sapwood, transition zone and heartwood) of Dalbergia odorifera changed. The most abrupt change occurred in the narrow xylem transition zone, which is the key location involved in heartwood formation in Dalbergia odorifera.

39. An optimized high-throughput SARS-CoV-2 dual reporter trans-complementation system for antiviral screening in vitroand in vivo

Abstract

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is still epidemic around the world. The manipulation of SARS-CoV-2 is restricted to biosafety level 3 laboratories (BSL-3). In this study, we developed a SARS-CoV-2 ΔN-GFP-HiBiT replicon delivery particles (RDPs) encoding a dual reporter gene, GFP-HiBiT, capable of producing both GFP signal and luciferase activities. Through optimal selection of the reporter gene, GFP-HiBiT demonstrated superior stability and convenience for antiviral evaluation. Additionally, we established a RDP infection mouse model by delivering the Ngene into K18-hACE2 KI mouse through lentivirus. This mouse model supports RDP replication and can be utilized for in vivoantiviral evaluations. In summary, the RDP system serves as a valuable tool for efficient antiviral screening and studying the gene function of SARS-CoV-2. Importantly, this system can be manipulated in BSL-2 laboratories, decreasing the threshold of experimental requirements.
