This report summarizes presentations and discussions of experts in the fields of infectious diseases and drug abuse. These experts met to: (1) identify unresolved research issues and to set directions for future studies, (2) explore the feasibility of using surveillance for infectious diseases as surrogate markers for assessing trends of intravenous drug abuse in a community, and (3) assess the impact of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) on the clinical course of other infectious diseases and vice versa. more...
