Optimizing the input probability distribution of a discrete-time channel is a standard step in the information-theoretic analysis of digital communication systems. Nevertheless, many practical communication systems transmit uniformly and independently distributed symbols drawn from regular constellation sets. The introduction of the probabilistic amplitude shaping architecture has renewed interest in using optimized probability distributions, i.e., probabilistic shaping. Traditionally, probabilistic shaping has been employed to reduce the transmit power required for a given information rate over additive noise channels. While this translates into substantive performance gains for optical fiber communication systems, the interaction of shaping and fiber nonlinearity has posed intriguing questions. At first glance, probabilistic shaping seems to exacerbate nonlinear interference noise (NLIN) due to larger higher-order standardized moments. Therefore, the optimization of shaping distributions must differ from those used for linear channels. Secondly, finite-length effects related to the memory of the nonlinear fiber channel have been observed. This suggests that the marginal input-symbol distribution is not the only consideration. This paper provides a tutorial-style discussion of probabilistic shaping for optical fiber communication. Since the distinguishing property of the channel is the signal-dependent NLIN, we speak of probabilistic shaping for nonlinearity tolerance. Our analysis builds on the first-order time-domain perturbation approximation of the nonlinear fiber channel and revisits the notion of linear and nonlinear shaping gain. We largely focus on probabilistic amplitude shaping with popular shaping methods. We introduce a practical sign-dependent sequence selection metric for probabilistic amplitude shaping and propose a simple method to predict the gains in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for sequence selection. Cellular Internet-of-things (C-IoT) user equipments (UEs) typically transmit frequent but small amounts of uplink data to the base station. Undergoing a traditional random access procedure (RAP) to transmit a small but frequent data presents a considerable overhead. As an antidote, preconfigured uplink resources (PURs) are typically used in newer UEs, where the devices are allocated uplink resources beforehand to transmit on without following the RAP. A prerequisite for transmitting on PURs is that the UEs must use a valid timing advance (TA) so that they do not interfere with transmissions of other nodes in adjacent resources. One solution to this end is to validate the previously held TA by the UE to ensure that it is still valid. While this validation is trivial for stationary UEs, mobile UEs often encounter conditions where the previous TA is no longer valid and a new one is to be requested by falling back on legacy RAP. This limits the applicability of PURs in mobile UEs. To counter this drawback and ensure a near-universal adoption of transmitting on PURs, we propose new machine learning aided solutions for validation and prediction of TA for UEs of any type of mobility. We conduct comprehensive simulation evaluations across different types of communication environments to demonstrate that our proposed solutions provide up to a 98.7% accuracy in predicting the TA., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to an IEEE journal

Non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) complement their terrestrial counterparts in enabling ubiquitous connectivity globally by serving unserved and/or underserved areas of the world. While supporting enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) data over NTNs has been extensively studied in the past, focus on massive machine type communication (mMTC) over NTNs is currently growing, as also witnessed by the new study and work items included into the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) agenda for commissioning specifications for Internet-of-Things (IoT) communications over NTNs. Supporting mMTC in non-terrestrial cellular IoT (C-IoT) networks requires jointly addressing the unique challenges introduced in NTNs and CIoT communications. In this paper, we tackle one such issue caused due to the extended round-trip time and increased path loss in NTNs resulting in a degraded network throughput. We propose smarter transport blocks scheduling methods that can increase the efficiency of resource utilization. We conduct end-to-end link-level simulations of C-IoT traffic over NTNs and present numerical results of the data rate gains achieved to show the performance of our proposed solutions against legacy scheduling methods., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures. Fiber nonlinearity effects cap achievable rates and ranges in long-haul optical fiber communication links. Conventional nonlinearity compensation methods, such as perturbation theory-based nonlinearity compensation (PB-NLC), attempt to compensate for the nonlinearity by approximating analytical solutions to the signal propagation over optical fibers. However, their practical usability is limited by model mismatch and the immense computational complexity associated with the analytical computation of perturbation triplets and the nonlinearity distortion field. Recently, machine learning techniques have been used to optimise parameters of PB-based approaches, which traditionally have been determined analytically from physical models. It has been claimed in the literature that the learned PB-NLC approaches have improved performance and/or reduced computational complexity over their non-learned counterparts. In this paper, we first revisit the acclaimed benefits of the learned PB-NLC approaches by carefully carrying out a comprehensive performance-complexity analysis utilizing state-of-the-art complexity reduction methods. Interestingly, our results show that least squares-based PB-NLC with clustering quantization has the best performance-complexity trade-off among the learned PB-NLC approaches. Second, we advance the state-of-the-art of learned PB-NLC by proposing and designing a fully learned structure. We apply a bi-directional recurrent neural network for learning perturbation triplets that are alike those obtained from the analytical computation and are used as input features for the neural network to estimate the nonlinearity distortion field. Finally, we demonstrate through numerical simulations that our proposed fully learned approach achieves an improved performance-complexity trade-off compared to the existing learned and non-learned PB-NLC techniques.

Several machine learning inspired methods for perturbation-based fiber nonlinearity (PBNLC) compensation have been presented in recent literature. We critically revisit acclaimed benefits of those over non-learned methods. Numerical results suggest that learned linear processing of perturbation triplets of PB-NLC is preferable over feedforward neural-network solutions.

Overcoming fiber nonlinearity is one of the core challenges limiting the capacity of optical fiber communication systems. Machine learning based solutions such as learned digital backpropagation (LDBP) and the recently proposed deep convolutional recurrent neural network (DCRNN) have been shown to be effective for fiber nonlinearity compensation (NLC). Incorporating distributed compensation of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) within the learned models can improve their performance even further but at the same time, it also couples the compensation of nonlinearity and PMD. Consequently, it is important to consider the time variation of PMD for such a joint compensation scheme. In this paper, we investigate the impact of PMD drift on the DCRNN model with distributed compensation of PMD. We propose a transfer learning based selective training scheme to adapt the learned neural network model to changes in PMD. We demonstrate that fine-tuning only a small subset of weights as per the proposed method is sufficient for adapting the model to PMD drift. Using decision directed feedback for online learning, we track continuous PMD drift resulting from a time-varying rotation of the state of polarization (SOP). We show that transferring knowledge from a pre-trained base model using the proposed scheme significantly reduces the re-training efforts for different PMD realizations. Applying the hinge model for SOP rotation, our simulation results show that the learned models maintain their performance gains while tracking the PMD.

Probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) is a practical means to achieve a shaping gain in optical fiber communication. However, PAS and shaping in general also affect the signal-dependent generation of nonlinear interference. This provides an opportunity for nonlinearity mitigation through PAS, which is also referred to as a nonlinear shaping gain. In this paper, we introduce a linear lowpass filter model that relates transmitted symbol-energy sequences and nonlinear distortion experienced in an optical fiber channel. Based on this model, we conduct a nonlinearity analysis of PAS with respect to shaping blocklength and mapping strategy. Our model explains results and relationships found in literature and can be used as a design tool for PAS with improved nonlinearity tolerance. We use the model to introduce a new metric for PAS with sequence selection. Smart electrical grids rely on data communication to support their operation and on sensing for diagnostics and maintenance. Usually, the roles of communication and sensing equipment are different, i.e., communication equipment does not participate in sensing tasks and vice versa. Power line communication (PLC) offers a cost-effective solution for joint communication and sensing for smart grids. This is because the high-frequency PLC signals used for data communication also reveal detailed information regarding the health of the power lines that they travel through. Traditional PLC-based power line or cable diagnostic solutions are dependent on prior knowledge of the cable type, network topology, and/or characteristics of the anomalies. In this paper, we develop a power line sensing technique that can detect various types of cable anomalies without any prior domain knowledge. To this end, we design a solution that first uses time-series forecasting to predict the PLC channel state information at any given point in time based on its historical data. Under the approximation that the prediction error follows a Gaussian distribution, we then perform chi-squared statistical test to build an anomaly detector which identifies the occurrence of a cable fault. We demonstrate the effectiveness and universality of our sensing solution via evaluations conducted using both synthetic and real-world data extracted from low- and medium-voltage distribution networks.

Derived from the regular perturbation treatment of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, a machine learning-based scheme to mitigate the intra-channel optical fiber nonlinearity is proposed. Referred to as the perturbation theory-aided (PA) learned digital back-propagation (LDBP), the proposed scheme constructs a deep neural network (DNN) in a way similar to the split-step Fourier method: linear and nonlinear operations alternate. Inspired by the perturbation analysis, the intra-channel cross-phase modulation term is conveniently represented by matrix operations in the DNN. The introduction of this term in each nonlinear operation considerably improves the performance, as well as enables the flexibility of PA-LDBP by adjusting the numbers of spans per step. The proposed scheme is evaluated by numerical simulations of a single carrier optical fiber communication system operating at 32 Gbaud with 64-quadrature amplitude modulation and 20*80 km transmission distance. The results show that the proposed scheme achieves approximately 3.5 dB, 1.8 dB, 1.4 dB, and 0.5 dB performance gain in terms of Q2 factor over the linear compensation, when the numbers of spans per step are 1, 2, 4, and 10, respectively. Two methods are proposed to reduce the complexity of PALDBP, i.e., pruning the number of perturbation coefficients and chromatic dispersion compensation in the frequency domain for multi-span per step cases. Investigation of the performance and complexity suggests that PA-LDBP attains improved performance gains with reduced complexity when compared to LDBP in the cases of 4 and 10 spans per step.

This paper considers the application of widely linear (WL) receivers in an uplink multi-user system using real-valued modulation schemes, where the cellular base station (BS) with multiple antennas provides connectivity for randomly deployed single-antenna users. The targeted use case is massive machine type communication (mMTC) with grant-free access in the uplink, where the network is required to host a large number of low data rate devices transmitting in an uncoordinated fashion. Four types of WL receivers are investigated, namely the WL zero-forcing (ZF) and the WL minimum meansquared error (MMSE) receivers, along with their enhanced versions employing successive interference cancellation (SIC) with channel-dependent ordering, i.e., the WL-ZF-SIC and WL-MMSE-SIC receivers. The outage performances of these receivers are analytically characterized in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime and compared to those of conventional linear (CL) receivers using complex-valued modulation schemes. For the non-SIC receivers, we show that, when compared to the CL counterparts, the WL receivers yield a higher diversity gain when decoding the same number of users and have the same diversity gain but a decreased coding gain when the number of users is nearly doubled. The outage performance analysis of WL-SIC receivers is facilitated by the marginal distribution of ordered eigenvalues of a real-valued Wishart matrix. It is shown that the SIC operation with channel-dependent ordering brings no additional diversity gain to the WL receivers but instead increases the coding gain. Moreover, the coding gain of WL-SIC receivers grows as the number of users increases and even exceeds that of CL-SIC receivers under suitable conditions.

Neural networks have enabled applications in artificial intelligence through machine learning, and neuromorphic computing. Software implementations of neural networks on conventional computers that have separate memory and processor (and that operate sequentially) are limited in speed and energy efficiency. Neuromorphic engineering aims to build processors in which hardware mimics neurons and synapses in the brain for distributed and parallel processing. Neuromorphic engineering enabled by photonics (optical physics) can offer sub-nanosecond latencies and high bandwidth with low energies to extend the domain of artificial intelligence and neuromorphic computing applications to machine learning acceleration, nonlinear programming, intelligent signal processing, etc. Photonic neural networks have been demonstrated on integrated platforms and free-space optics depending on the class of applications being targeted. Here, we discuss the prospects and demonstrated applications of these photonic neural networks.

We propose a fiber nonlinearity post-compensation technique using the DNN and the second-order perturbation theory. We achieve 1 dB Q-factor improvement for a 32 Gbaud PDM-64-QAM at 1200 km compared to the linear dispersion compensation.

Device-to-device (D2D) communication is an essential component enabling connectivity for the Internet-of-Things (IoT). SCUBA, which stands for Sidelink Communication on Unlicensed Bands, is a novel medium access control protocol that facilitates D2D communications on the sidelink for IoT and machine-type communication (MTC) cellular devices. SCUBA includes support for direct peer-to-peer communication on the unlicensed bands by operating in a time division multiplexed manner to coexist with the underlying primary radio access technology, e.g., long term evolution - MTC (LTE-M). A fundamental requirement in the current version of SCUBA is that the communicating devices are to be synchronized with each other so that timing occasions of the devices can be accurately estimated by each other. However, when the devices are out of sync with each other, which may be caused due to one or more of the devices being out of cellular coverage region or are being served by different base stations, typically observed in mobile devices, operation of legacy SCUBA fails. To this end, we design synchronization methods to establish successful SCUBA links between devices that are out-of-sync with each other. Due to the inherent timing discovery embedded in our method, our solution also extends the operating range of SCUBA by eliminating its reliance on timing-agnostic communication. We analyze and compare the performance of our methods in terms of power consumption and the resultant impact on device battery life to show the potential of our solutions., Comment: This paper has 7 pages with 6 figures. Device-to-device communication (D2D) is a key enabler for connecting devices together to form the Internet of Things (IoT). A growing issue with IoT networks is the increasing number of IoT devices congesting the spectral resources of the cellular bands. Operating D2D in unlicensed band alleviates this issue by offloading network traffic from the licensed bands, while also reducing the associated licensing costs. To this end, we present a new low-cost radio access technology (RAT) protocol, called Sidelink Communications on Unlicensed BAnds (SCUBA), which can be implemented on cellular devices such that it coexists with the legacy cellular protocol by operating as a secondary RAT in a time division duplex manner using the existing radio hardware. SCUBA is compatible on different types of cellular devices including the low-complexity half-duplex frequency division duplex machine type communication (MTC) user equipments. SCUBA provides flexible sidelink (SL) latency and battery life tradeoff using a discontinuous reception procedure, which ensures that it is applicable across a wide range of use cases. We prove the effectiveness of our protocol with analyses and simulation results of the medium access control layer of SCUBA using different types of MTC traffic for both SL and the underlying cellular communication., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures. Microwave backhaul links are characterized by high signal-to-noise ratios permitting spectrally-efficient transmission. The used signal constellation sizes and achievable data rates are typically limited by transceiver impairments, predominantly by phase noise from non-ideal carrier generation. In this paper, we propose a new method to improve the data rate over such microwave links. We make use of the fact that adjacent frequency channels are inactive in many deployment scenarios. We argue that additional data can be transmitted in the skirts of the spectral mask imposed on the transmission signal by regulation. To accomplish this task, we present a shaped wideband single-carrier transmission using non-Nyquist pulse shapes. In particular, we design spectrum-skirt filling (SSF) pulse shaping filters that follow the spectral mask response, and perform detection using an accordingly increased sampling frequency at the receiver. We evaluate the achievable information rates of the SSF-based transmission considering practical dispersive channels and non-ideal transmitter and receiver processing. To compensate for phase noise impairments, we derive carrier phase tracking and estimation techniques, and utilize them in tandem with nonlinear precoding which mitigates the intersymbol interference introduced by the non-Nyquist SSF shaping filter. In optical communication systems, short blocklength probabilistic enumerative sphere shaping (ESS) provides both linear shaping gain and nonlinear tolerance. In this work, we investigate the performance and complexity of ESS in comparison with fiber nonlinearity compensation via digital back propagation (DBP) with different steps per span. We evaluate the impact of the shaping blocklength in terms of nonlinear tolerance and also consider the case of ESS with a Volterra-based nonlinear equalizer (VNLE), which provides lower complexity than DBP. In single-channel transmission, ESS with VNLE achieves similar performance in terms of finite length bit-metric decoding rate to uniform signaling with one step per span DBP. The integration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into wireless networks has opened a new horizon to meet the capacity and coverage requirements foreseen in future wireless networks. Harnessing UAVs as flying base stations (BSs) has helped to achieve a cost-effective and on-the-go wireless network that may be used in several scenarios such as to support disaster response and in temporary hotspots. Despite the extensive research on the application side of UAVs, the integration of UAVs as BSs into existing wireless networks remains an open challenge. While UAV BSs can help to increase the area spectral efficiency, the added network heterogeneity and BS densification may diminish the capacity gains due to increased handover rates. In this work, we shed some light on this tradeoff by studying a three tier network architecture consisting of macro, small, and UAV BSs and analyze its coverage and rate performance. In particular, we consider joint control/data and split architectures and express the rate performance for stationary and mobile users, using an analytical approach based on stochastic geometry. Remote monitoring of electrical cable conditions is an essential characteristic of the next-generation smart grid, which features the ability to consistently surveil and control the grid infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a technique that harnesses power line modems (PLMs) as sensors for monitoring cable health. We envisage that all or most of these PLMs have already been deployed for data communication purposes and focus on the distribution grid or neighborhood area networks in the smart grid. For such a setting, we propose a machine learning (ML) based framework for automatic cable diagnostics by continuously monitoring the cable status to identify, assess, and locate possible degradations. As part of our technique, we also synthesize state-of-the-art reflectometry methods within the PLMs to extract beneficial features for effective performance of our proposed ML solution. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our solution under different aging conditions and varying load configurations. Ultra-dense networks (UDNs) envision the massive deployment of heterogenous base stations (BSs) to meet the desired traffic demands. Furthermore, UDNs are expected to support the diverse devices e.g., personal mobile devices and unmanned ariel vehicles. User mobility and the resulting excessive changes in user to BS associations in such highly dense networks may however nullify the capacity gains foreseen through BS densification. Thus there exists a need to quantify the effect of user mobility in UDNs. In this article, we consider a three-dimensional N-tier downlink network and determine the association probabilities and inter/intra tier handover rates using tools from stochastic geometry. In particular, we incorporate user and BSs' antenna heights into the mathematical analysis and study the impact of user height on the association and handover rate. The numerical trends show that the intra-tier handovers are dominant for the tiers with shortest relative elevation w.r.t. the user and this dominance is more prominent when there exists a high discrepancy among the tiers' heights. We investigate the problem of coded caching for nonuniform demands when the structured clique cover algorithm proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen for decentralized caching is used for delivery. We apply this algorithm to all user demands regardless of their request probabilities. This allows for coding among the files that have different request probabilities but makes the allocation of memory to different files challenging during the content placement phase. As our main contribution, we analytically characterize the optimal placement strategy that minimizes the expected delivery rate under a storage capacity constraint. It is shown that the optimal placement follows either a two or a three group strategy, where a set of less popular files are not cached at all and the files within each of the other sets are allocated identical amounts of storage as if they had the same request probabilities. We show that for a finite set of storage capacities, that we call the base-cases of the problem, the two group strategy is always optimal. For other storage capacities, optimal placement is achieved by memory sharing between certain base-cases and the resulting placement either follows a two or a three group strategy depending on the corresponding base-cases used. We derive a polynomial time algorithm that determines the base-cases of the problem given the number of caches and popularity distribution of files. In an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), data acquisition points (DAPs) are responsible for collecting traffic from several smart meters and automated devices and transmitting them to the utility control center. Although the problem of optimized data collector placement has already been addressed for wireless broadband and sensor networks, DAP placement is quite a new research area for AMIs. In this paper, we investigate the minimum required number of DAPs and their optimized locations on top of the existing utility poles in a distribution grid such that smart grid quality of service requirements can best be provided. In order to solve the problem for large-scale AMIs, we devise a novel heuristic algorithm using a greedy approach for identifying potential pole locations for DAP placement and the Dijkstra shortest path algorithm for constructing reliable routes. We employ the characteristics of medium access schemes from the IEEE 802.15.4g smart utility network (SUN) standard, and consider mission-critical and non-critical smart grid traffic. The performance and time-complexity of our algorithm are compared with those obtained by the IBM CPLEX software for small scenarios. Coded caching is an effective technique to reduce the redundant traffic in wireless networks. The existing coded caching schemes require the splitting of files into a possibly large number of subfiles, i.e., they perform coded subfile caching. Keeping the files intact during the caching process would actually be appealing, broadly speaking because of its simpler implementation. However, little is known about the effectiveness of this coded file caching in reducing the data delivery rate. In this paper, we propose such a file caching scheme which uses a decentralized algorithm for content placement and either an online clique cover or matching algorithm for the delivery of missing data. We derive approximations for the expected delivery rate of both schemes using the differential equations method, and show them to be tight through concentration analysis and computer simulations. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed coded file caching is significantly more effective than uncoded caching in reducing the delivery rate. The problem of content delivery in caching networks is investigated for scenarios where multiple users request identical files. Redundant user demands are likely when the file popularity distribution is highly non-uniform or the user demands are positively correlated. An adaptive method is proposed for the delivery of redundant demands in caching networks. Based on the redundancy pattern in the current demand vector, the proposed method decides between the transmission of uncoded messages or the coded messages of [1] for delivery. Moreover, a lower bound on the delivery rate of redundant requests is derived based on a cutset bound argument. The performance of the adaptive method is investigated through numerical examples of the delivery rate of several specific demand vectors as well as the average delivery rate of a caching network with correlated requests. The adaptive method is shown to considerably reduce the gap between the non-adaptive delivery rate and the lower bound. In this paper we address the linear precoding and decoding design problem for a bidirectional orthogonal frequencydivision multiplexing (OFDM) communication system, between two multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) full-duplex (FD) nodes. The effects of hardware distortion as well as the channel state information error are taken into account. In the first step, we transform the available time-domain characterization of the hardware distortions for FD MIMO transceivers to the frequency domain, via a linear Fourier transformation. As a result, the explicit impact of hardware inaccuracies on the residual selfinterference (RSI) and inter-carrier leakage (ICL) is formulated in relation to the intended transmit/received signals. Afterwards, linear precoding and decoding designs are proposed to enhance the system performance following the minimum-mean-squarederror (MMSE) and sum rate maximization strategies, assuming the availability of perfect or erroneous CSI. The proposed designs are based on the application of alternating optimization over the system parameters, leading to a necessary convergence. In recent decades, power line communication has attracted considerable attention from the research community and industry, as well as from regulatory and standardization bodies. In this article we provide an overview of both narrowband and broadband systems, covering potential applications, regulatory and standardization efforts and recent research advancements in channel characterization, physical layer performance, medium access and higher layer specifications and evaluations. In this paper we present an alternative separable implementation of L2-orthogonal space-time codes (STC) for continuous phase modulation (CPM). In this approach, we split the STC CPM transmitter into a single conventional CPM modulator and a correction filter bank. While the CPM modulator is common to all transmit antennas, the correction filter bank applies different correction units to each antenna. Thereby desirable code properties as orthogonality and full diversity are achievable with just a slightly larger bandwidth demand. This new representation has three main advantages. First, it allows to easily generalize the orthogonality condition to any arbitrary number of transmit antennas. Second, for a quite general set of correction functions that we detail, it can be proved that full diversity is achieved. Third, by separating the modulation and correction steps inside the receiver, a simpler receiver can be designed as a bank of data independent inverse correction filters followed by a single CPM demodulator. Therefore, in this implementation, only one correlation filter bank for the detection of all transmitted signals is necessary. The decoding effort grows only linearly with the number of transmit antennas.

Several recent standards such as IEEE 802.11a/g, IEEE 802.16, and ECMA Multiband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MB-OFDM) for high data-rate Ultra-Wideband (UWB), employ bit-interleaved convolutionally-coded multicarrier modulation over quasi-static fading channels. Motivated by the lack of appropriate error rate analysis techniques for this popular type of system and channel model, we present two novel analytical methods for bit error rate (BER) estimation of coded multicarrier systems operating over frequency-selective quasi-static channels with non-ideal interleaving. In the first method, the approximate performance of the system is calculated for each realization of the channel, which is suitable for obtaining the outage BER performance (a common performance measure for e.g. MB-OFDM systems). The second method assumes Rayleigh distributed frequency-domain subcarrier channel gains and knowledge of their correlation matrix, and can be used to directly obtain the average BER performance. Both methods are applicable to convolutionally-coded interleaved multicarrier systems employing Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM), and are also able to account for narrowband interference (modeled as a sum of tone interferers). To illustrate the application of the proposed analysis, both methods are used to study the performance of a tone-interference-impaired MB-OFDM system., Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures, 1 table.
