In recent years, there has been exponential growth in using virtual spaces, including dialogue systems, that handle personal information. The concept of personal privacy in the literature is discussed and controversial, whereas, in the technological field, it directly influences the degree of reliability perceived in the information system (privacy ‘as trust’). This work aims to protect the right to privacy on personal data (GDPR, 2018) and avoid the loss of sensitive content by exploring sensitive information detection (SID) task. It is grounded on the following research questions: (RQ1) What does sensitive data mean? How to define a personal sensitive information domain? (RQ2) How to create a state-of-the-art model for SID?(RQ3) How to evaluate the model? RQ1 theoretically investigates the concepts of privacy and the ontological state-of-the-art representation of personal information. The Data Privacy Vocabulary (DPV) is the taxonomic resource taken as an authoritative reference for the definition of the knowledge domain. Concerning RQ2, we investigate two approaches to classify sensitive data: the first - bottom-up - explores automatic learning methods based on transformer networks, the second - top-down - proposes logical-symbolic methods with the construction of privaframe, a knowledge graph of compositional frames representing personal data categories. Both approaches are tested. For the evaluation - RQ3 – we create SPeDaC, a sentence-level labeled resource. This can be used as a benchmark or training in the SID task, filling the gap of a shared resource in this field. If the approach based on artificial neural networks confirms the validity of the direction adopted in the most recent studies on SID, the logical-symbolic approach emerges as the preferred way for the classification of fine-grained personal data categories, thanks to the semantic-grounded tailor modeling it allows. At the same time, the results highlight the strong potential of hybrid architectures in solving automatic tasks.

Il lavoro descritto in questo elaborato indaga la presenza dei tratti dell’italiano neostandard in un corpus di produzioni scolastiche scritte, con particolare attenzione all’uso di indicativo e congiuntivo nelle frasi completive. In particolare, delle tendenze di ristandardizzazione selezionate si osservano gli usi linguistici di alunni/e, le correzioni imposte dai/dalle docenti e le indicazioni delle grammatiche per la scuola; questa ricognizione permette di tracciare un quadro generale degli atteggiamenti della scuola nei confronti dei tratti del neostandard. La seconda parte dell’elaborato è dedicata a un’analisi dell’alternanza modale nelle subordinate completive; in primo luogo, si espone una revisione della letteratura sulla complementazione, sulla modalità e sul congiuntivo in italiano, con un focus particolare sulla sua recessione; in seguito, si procede all’analisi del fenomeno sulla base dei dati appositamente raccolti nelle scuole che hanno partecipato all'indagine. In secondo luogo, l’accettabilità dell’indicativo pro congiuntivo in testi scritti a scuola viene ulteriormente indagata tramite la somministrazione di un compito di correzione ai/alle docenti. L’ultima parte dell’elaborato accoglie un’analisi approfondita delle grammatiche per la scuola, la cui trattazione del congiuntivo è messa in relazione con le osservazioni della letteratura specialistica; ciò permette di completare il quadro riguardo agli atteggiamenti della scuola e di proporre riflessioni di natura glottodidattica., The research described in this thesis investigates features of neo-standard Italian in a corpus of school students’ texts. Special attention is dedicated to the use of indicative and subjunctive in complement clauses. In particular, restandardisation trends are observed from the point of view of the students’ usage, the corrections applied by teachers and the instructions of school grammar books; this analysis allows drawing a general profile of the attitude of Italian schools towards neo-standard traits. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to analysing mood variation in complement clauses. First, a review of the literature on complementation, modality and Italian subjunctive is outlined, with special attention to its disappearance; then, the phenomenon is investigated in the data collected in the schools that took part in the research. Secondly, the acceptability of indicative in lieu of subjunctive in texts written at school is further investigated by means of a correction test administered to the teachers. The final part of the thesis contains a detailed analysis of school grammar books, whose treatment of the subjunctive is compared to the scientific literature; this chapter allows to complete the picture regarding the attitude of Italian schools and to make proposals related to grammar teaching.

In this thesis we present the development and the current status of the IFrameNet project, aimed at the construction of a large-scale lexical semantic resource for the Italian language based on Frame Semantics theories. We will begin by contextualizing our work in the wider context of Frame Semantics and of the FrameNet project, which, since 1997, has attempted to apply these theories to lexicography. We will then analyse and discuss the applicability of the structure of the American resource to Italian and more specifically we will focus on the domain of fear, worry, and anxiety. We will finally propose some modifications aimed at improving this domain of the resource in relation to its coherence, its ability to accurately represent the linguistic reality and in particular in order to make it possible to apply it to Italian.

L’aumento dei flussi migratori in diversi paesi europei e la diffusione della globalizzazione su scala mondiale hanno determinato lo sviluppo di società multilingue e multiculturali tra cui quella italiana, che negli ultimi decenni si è rapidamente trasformata in una società “super-diversa”. Questi cambiamenti sociali hanno determinato una svolta anche nella ricerca in ambito sociolinguistico, che descrive e analizza la flessibilità delle pratiche comunicative determinate dalla mobilità e che ha adottato il termine translanguaging per riferirsi all’uso flessibile e dinamico dell’intero repertorio linguistico di un parlante, che include sia elementi verbali che non verbali. Questo progetto di ricerca si propone di esplorare le pratiche di translanguaging della comunità migrante di Cesena (Italia) e di indagare le percezioni dei parlanti in relazione alle loro pratiche e identità multilingue. Attraverso l’analisi qualitativa di interazioni spontanee tra i parlanti ed interviste semi-strutturate, i risultati dell’analisi da un lato evidenziano la flessibilità delle pratiche comunicative dei parlanti multilingue e la spontaneità con cui queste avvengono nella loro quotidianità, dall’altro mettono in luce la connotazione negativa che i parlanti attribuiscono alle proprie pratiche di translanguaging, rivelando l’influenza dell’ideologia del monolinguismo., Increased migration flows in many European countries and the spread of globalization all over the world have accelerated the development of multilingual and multicultural societies. Like other European countries, these migration flows have affected Italy, which has rapidly turned into a “superdiverse” society. Such changes in society urged scholars to see sociolinguistics phenomena and processes as determined by mobility and to examine them from a new perspective. To describe the flexibility and hybridity of communicative practices determined by mobility, scholars have developed a new way of describing and analysing language use in late modern societies by adopting a translanguaging perspective. This research is set at Centro Interculturale MoviMenti (Cesena, Italy), a place that offers integration and support services as well as Italian language classes to the migrant community of Cesena. This research examines migrant speakers’ translanguaging practices by analysing informal interactions amongst them on their weekly visits to Centro Interculturale MoviMenti. In addition, it investigates speakers’ perceptions and understandings of their linguistic practices and multilingual identities. Through a qualitative analysis of a collection of audio-video recordings of informal interactions and semi-structured interviews, the results of the analysis highlight from one side the flexibility of multilingual speakers’ translanguaging practices, and from the other one they reveal the negative connotation that speakers attribute to their translanguaging practices, uncovering an monolingual ideology.

In diesem Band werden verschiedene methodische Ansätze vorgestellt, die Sprachbiographien im Zentrum haben: Es sind erstens Beispiele für das Erstellen von kleinen mündlichen Korpora und deren Interpretationsmöglichkeiten im Fremdsprachenunterricht (Nissen/Querci und Cogorni/Thüne); zweitens Beispiele für die Arbeit mit Korpora narrativer Interviews, in denen historische und biographische Einschnitte und deren sprachliches Erleben besprochen werden (Andus, Farina, Negri); schließlich wird die Vielgestaltigkeit von kurzen Texten zu Spracherlebnissen dargestellt (Busch/Thüne). Im ersten Teil dieser Einführung werden verschiedene methodische und theoretische Ansätze dargestellt, die für die Entwicklung der Arbeit mit Sprachbiographien in der angewandten Linguistik maßgeblich sind. Insbesondere wird auf die Bedeutung von subjektiven Theorien eingegangen, die zur Erweiterung des Begriffs des sprachlichen Repertoires und der Entwicklung des Konzepts des Spracherlebens beigetragen haben. Damit zusammen hängen auch multimodale Darstellungsformen von individueller Mehrsprachigkeit z.B. durch das Sprachenportrait. Im zweiten Teil der Einführung werden die einzelnen Aufsätze vorgestellt, es wird ihre Entstehungsgeschichte und ihr thematischer Zusammenhang beschrieben. Außerdem wird abschließend auf die Frage eingegangen, wie diese methodischen Ansätze in Unterrichtskontexten von Deutsch als Fremdsprache Anwendung finden können. English-Medium Instruction (EMI) is rapidly being taken up in universities worldwide, though the speed at which EMI courses are appearing continues to outpace empirical research (Martín del Pozo 2017). In this context, research has primarily provided insights on lecturers’ self-perceptions, by prioritizing lecturers’ need for training in EMI. Our contribution here is threefold. First, we aim to provide an account of lecturers’ self-perceptions of their own teaching in English, resulting from a survey involving 40 EMI lecturers in Engineering and Economics at the University of Bologna. Second, by cross-referencing their replies with relevant literature, we aim to identify recurring patterns in lecturers’ self-perceptions. Third, by cross-referencing these perceptions with findings from lecture recordings, we aim to determine how far lecturers’ assumptions are consistent with their classroom practices. Results show that experienced EMI lecturers are able to identify three main dimensions of EMI: academic English proficiency, instructional style, and “culturally shaped norms of teacher-student interactions” (Hu and Li 2017: 200). However, contrasting lecturers’ perceptions with what they actually do in the classroom has proved that the intentions and strategies of lecturers need to be acted upon before substantial improvements in their approach to teaching can be expected. Implications for providing lecturer-support programs are discussed.

La nona edizione del convegno annuale dell'Associazione per l'Informatica Umanistica e la Cultura Digitale (AIUCD 2020; Milano, 15-17 gennaio 2020) ha come tema “La svolta inevitabile: sfide e prospettive per l'Informatica Umanistica”, con lo specifico obiettivo di fornire un'occasione per riflettere sulle conseguenze della crescente diffusione dell’approccio computazionale al trattamento dei dati connessi all’ambito umanistico. Questo volume raccoglie gli articoli i cui contenuti sono stati presentati al convegno. A diversa stregua, essi affrontano il tema proposto da un punto di vista ora più teorico-metodologico, ora più empirico-pratico, presentando i risultati di lavori e progetti (conclusi o in corso) che considerino centrale il trattamento computazionale dei dati.

Questo quarto volume della collana "CLUB Working Papers in Linguistics" raccoglie, in formato open access, una selezione dei contributi presentati durante l’anno accademico 2018/2019 nell’ambito delle attività del CLUB – Circolo Linguistico dell’Università di Bologna. Le diverse discipline del linguaggio che sono rappresentate in questa miscellanea offrono al lettore uno sguardo d’insieme sulle ultime tendenze della ricerca in vari ambiti, tra cui la tipologia linguistica, la linguistica storica, la corpus linguistics, l’analisi del discorso e la linguistica clinica. Come nelle precedenti edizioni, viene qui pubblicato anche un saggio tratto dalla tesi di laurea magistrale risultata vincitrice del premio CLUB Day "Una tesi in linguistica": quest’anno, il lavoro scelto è di Dennis Fucci. I sette articoli, redatti in italiano, inglese o francese, sono dunque (in ordine alfabetico) di Giorgio Francesco Arcodia, Alessandra Barotto, Claudia Roberta Combei, Claire Doquet, Chiara Fedriani, Dennis Fucci, Gloria Gagliardi e Simone Mattiola. Come di prassi, tutti i contributi sono stati sottoposti a un processo di revisione anonima da parte di due reviewer esperti, scelti all’interno o all’esterno del comitato scientifico della collana.

The present thesis investigates the bilingualism involving Italian majority language and Friulian minority language. Preschool children aged 4 to 6 years old from the town of Gemona del Friuli in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region were tested through a picture supported elicited production experiment designed to investigate relative clauses acquisition (cf. COST Action 33, Friedmann et al. in prep.). Two research questions were addressed: the first concerned the acquisition of relative clauses, in order to verify whether the Italian-Friulian children productions would be comparable with the related cross-linguistic literature; the second question concerned the type of bilingualism found, in order to provide a characterization of its peculiarities: the results were then analysed also with respect to specific bilingual factors as cross-linguistic influence, language dominance and input role. As far as the first research question is concerned, the data presented in this thesis confirm that Italian-Friulian children’s performance is in line with cross-linguistic results in all conditions, namely for SRCs, ORCs, and PPRCs. Specifically, in line with the predictions made following the Relativized Minimality approach (Rizzi 1990, 2004; Friedmann et al. 2009), results support both the subject-object asymmetry and the ORCs and PPRCs performance similarity. Moreover, through a further investigation of PPRCs, an effect of the type of prepositions was found: in the case of PPRCs with lexical prepositions children produced more target-like structures than with PPRCs with functional prepositions. However, it should be added that PPRCs are still scarcely investigated and further research would be needed to better understand the issue. Turning to the second research question, results were analysed comparing the Italian and the Friulian experimental session, also with respect to specific bilingual factors such as cross-linguistic influence, language dominance and input role (Mioni 1979; Meisel 2004; Gorsjean 2011; Rowe and Grohmann 2013). Having considered that the children’s production was essentially in Italian regardless of the language of elicitation being Friulian or Italian, and the ameliorating role played by Italian in influencing the children’s results, it can be said that the Italian-Friulian bilingualism is unbalanced with Italian being the strongly dominant language and Friulian being the weak one. Nonetheless, even if Italian is certainly the dominant language, it should be noted that specific influences of Friulian on Italian were indeed present in the children’s production, regardless of the children being described by their parents as receiving or not receiving a minimum Friulian input. This suggests that even if it is not clear to which extent, still Friulian is alive and productive in those contexts in which the children grow.

Quando le persone parlano fanno gesti. È stato infatti dimostrato che la gestualità è una componente fondamentale della produzione orale e che le due modalità interagiscono a diversi livelli linguistici (semantico, pragmatico, temporale e prosodico). Tuttavia, i meccanismi sottostanti e le cause di questa stretta interazione sono ancora poco noti e, per questo, sono oggetto di molti studi sperimentali. Il presente lavoro si propone di investigare alcuni di questi aspetti, focalizzandosi su come l’inibire o l’incoraggiare l’uso della gestualità nei parlanti abbia influenze sulla loro produzione orale nel discorso narrativo. Studi precedenti hanno proposto che l’espressione orale e la produzione gestuale condividano un comune sistema di controllo motorio mediato dall’area di Broca, e che vi sia anche una dipendenza biomeccanica tra le due modalità. Questo suggerisce che le caratteristiche acustiche del parlato siano strettamente legate alla gestualità sia per motivi biomeccanici o riconducibili al controllo motorio, sia in termini di esigenze comunicative e prosodiche. Tuttavia, la questione non è stata sufficientemente investigata a livello empirico. A questo fine, si ritiene interessante investigare se inibire o incoraggiare i parlanti all’uso della gestualità possa avere degli effetti sulle caratteristiche acustiche del parlato. Gli effetti di inibire l’uso della gestualità sono stati esplorati in studi precedenti che hanno analizzato, ad esempio, come questo abbia un impatto sulla fluenza e sulla lunghezza e contenuto del parlato. Tuttavia, questi studi hanno portato a risultati a volte contrastanti dai quali è difficile trarre conclusioni univoche. D’altra parte, non sono stati condotti studi sperimentali sui possibili effetti derivanti dall’incoraggiare l’uso della gestualità sui medesimi aspetti del parlato. In questo lavoro, sono stati condotti due studi sperimentali nei quali 40 partecipanti di madrelingua italiana hanno descritto delle brevi storie a fumetti a un ascoltatore. Nel primo studio (Capitolo 2) la gestualità dei parlanti è stata inibita (ai soggetti è stato chiesto di sedersi tenendo le mani sotto le gambe), mentre nel secondo studio (Capitolo 3) i parlanti sono stati incoraggiati all’uso della gestualità. In entrambi gli studi, il parlato è stato analizzato a livello prosodico e testuale. In particolare, si sono analizzate: la lunghezza delle produzioni orali (in termini di numero di parole e lunghezza in secondi), le disfluenze (pause piene, auto-correzioni, ripetizioni, inserimenti di suoni o segmenti di parole, interruzioni), la velocità del parlato (sillabe al secondo), e una serie di misure acustiche che riguardano la frequenza fondamentale (F0) e l’intensità (volume) della voce. Inoltre, ulteriori analisi qualitative e quantitative sono state condotte sui dati raccolti. Tali analisi sono descritte nel Capitolo 4, nel quale vengono affrontate anche alcune questioni metodologiche. I risultati mostrano che l’impossibilità di spiegarsi con la gestualità non è di particolare impatto negativo sul parlato (che infatti non diventa più lungo in termini di durata, né meno fluente o più monotono a livello acustico). D’altro lato, lo studio dimostra che chiedere ai parlanti di usare la gestualità nel descrivere le sequenze narrative può avere effetti sulla lunghezza delle storie narrate (in termini di numero di parole) e può interagire con i parametri acustici del parlato (alcune misure di F0 e intensità risultano più elevate). Infine, nel Capitolo 4 si mostra che incoraggiare i parlanti a usare la gestualità li porta effettivamente a: (1) aumentare il numero di gesti che usano nel raccontare le storie; (2) gesticolare in modo più “saliente”, ovvero in uno spazio più alto (ad es., in corrispondenza del petto) rispetto a quando non ricevono tali istruzioni. Inoltre, le stesse istruzioni portano i parlanti a: (3) fare uso di più gesti rappresentativi; (4) usare maggiormente strategie multimodali di enactment (impersonificazione) che coinvolgono anche, ad esempio, espressioni facciali e movimenti della testa e delle spalle. In generale, questa tesi si propone di investigare la possibile funzione della gestualità nel processo di espressione verbale, in particolare nella sua pianificazione e articolazione. I risultati suggeriscono che la produzione della gestualità può contribuire a enfatizzare alcune caratteristiche prosodiche del parlato. Allo stesso tempo, i risultati mostrano che l’impossibilità di spiegarsi tramite la gestualità può essere ben compensata nel discorso narrativo semi-spontaneo. In futuro, ulteriori studi sperimentali potrebbero contribuire a fare luce sulla possibilità che gestualità e strutture prosodiche siano pianificate e prodotte insieme durante il processo di produzione verbale.

Il lavoro si concentra sulla sintassi, la semantica e la pragmatica della particella pa (o po) nelle varietà del ladino dolomitico, con particolare attenzione al suo impiego nel fassano. Questa particella presenta caratteristiche e funzioni diverse nelle varietà esaminate: in ampezzano e in fodóm pa serve come particella modale che esprime un atteggiamento del parlante, in badiotto e in gardenese funziona come marcatore interrogativo obbligatorio. In fassano la particella non è obbligatoria, pur essendo molto frequente nelle frasi interrogative, dove tuttavia non pare svolgere una funzione modale. Per illustrare e analizzare le diverse proprietà della particella nelle varietà considerate, la tesi è organizzata in cinque capitoli, dei quali i primi due sono dedicati a presentare le proprietà generali delle particelle modali (MP) e le ipotesi proposte sulla struttura in cui si manifestano, mentre gli ultimi tre sono dedicati alla descrizione degli usi e all'analisi della particella interrogativa pa/po nelle varietà ladine. Nel primo capitolo sono presentate le caratteristiche delle MP e sono discussi vari esempi ripresi in particolare dal tedesco (doch, denn) e dall'italiano (mai, poi). Per quanto concerne il quadro teorico, è adottata la cosiddetta split CP hypothesis di Rizzi (2001), che permette di cogliere l’interazione tra la modalità veicolata dalle particelle e la struttura sintattica della frase. Nel secondo capitolo sono prese in considerazione le particelle modali usate nell’italiano regionale (ben e mica) e nei dialetti parlati nel Veneto e nel Trentino (lu, ti, mo, po), che sono messe a confronto con le particelle usate in italiano e in tedesco, introdotte nel primo capitolo. Tale confronto suggerisce l’esistenza di tre tipi di posizione in cui possono apparire le particelle: iniziale, interno e finale. Le particelle nelle posizioni interne hanno avuto vari processi di grammaticalizzazione che coinvolgono il cambiamento della posizione sintattica, mentre le particelle che appaiono nelle posizioni iniziali o finali si evolvono in maniera relativamente semplice. Il terzo capitolo si concentra sull'uso di pa (e delle sue varianti po, a) nelle varietà ladine. Le particelle modali nel ladino dolomitico sono analizzate in accordo con le ipotesi sulla periferia sinistra della frase presentate nei capitoli 1 e 2. In particolare, la descrizione dettagliata degli usi di pa in frasi interrogative suggerisce l’esistenza di un processo di grammaticalizzazione dell’avverbio temporale, che lo trasforma in marcatore interrogativo obbligatorio, con una fase intermedia che ri-categorizza l'avverbio come particella modale (in accordo con la proposta di Hack 2011 e 2014). Al processo di grammaticalizzazione della particella pa è dedicato il quarto capitolo, che riprende in prospettiva diacronica l'analisi di grammaticalizzazione proposta da Hack (2011 e 2014). I dati in diacronia sono selezionati mediante interrogazione del Corpus dl Ladin Leterar, e servono a mostrare le frequenze e i contesti d'uso della particella nel tempo (XIX e XX secolo) e nelle diverse varietà ladine. I dati evidenziano l'esistenza di processi di grammaticalizzazione che si trovano in fasi diverse nelle varietà del ladino dolomitico, con l'ampezzano e il fodom nella prima fase, il fassano nella fase successiva, il badiotto e il marebbano in fase avanzata, e il gardenese nella fase estrema. Il quinto capitolo è dedicato al fassano, che sembra rappresentare una varietà di transizione, poiché è l’unica in cui la particella ha perso il valore modale, ma non ha ancora acquisito obbligatorietà. Per descrivere dettagliatamente l'uso di pa nel fassano, sono state condotte due inchieste. La prima ha coinvolto 75 studenti di varie località nella valle, la seconda invece 27 parlanti di diverse età e località. L’analisi svolta sui dati raccolti mostra che l'uso della particella è influenzato da fattori diatopici, dalla standardizzazione linguistica degli anni Ottanta, e dal ruolo svolto dalla scuola per l'insegnamento della lingua ladina. La complessità dell’uso della particella in questa varietà viene interpretata seguendo l’ipotesi avanzata da Benincà & Damonte (2009): l’omissibilità della particella è dovuta alla scelta libera tra la particella pa e un elemento foneticamente non realizzato. Inoltre, in alcune sotto-varietà fassane, la scolarizzazione ha dato luogo a una varietà intra-individuale normativa in cui l’uso della particella è preferito. In conclusione, il lavoro mostra l’evoluzione diacronica della particella pa su una linea che ha la sua origine nell’avverbio temporale, si sviluppa con la particella modale e termina con il marcatore interrogativo. Sulla base della split CP hypothesis, questo sviluppo è interpretato come un cambiamento della maniera in cui la particella interagisce con la proiezione etichettata FP (Force), dove si codificano il tipo di frase e la sua forza illocutiva. Il lavoro sulla particella pa si inserisce perciò nel quadro degli studi volti a descrivere la struttura e le proprietà della periferia sinistra della frase, e contribuisce con dati nuovi alla discussione sul rapporto tra "discorso" e "sintassi".

This thesis' aim is to add some pieces to the complex puzzle on the mechanism behind the comprehension of conversational implicatures. To do so, in a series of experiment we manipulated both the type of implicatures (scalar vs. ad-hoc) and the population under investigation (typical vs. atypical; children vs. adults).

This thesis addresses the cognitive foundations of categorization and acquisition of intonational categories in native (L1) and second language (L2). It focuses on the link between the processing of intonational categories and the and pragmatic functions of language. The thesis reports two behavioral psychoacoustic experiments that studied the disambiguation of sentence-modality (statement vs. question) signaled by sentence-final Boundary Tones by manipulating lexical and linguistic status of the underlying segmental information. A third ERPs experiment studied with ERPs the association of specific Pitch Accents with the discourse status of a referent in German and how different processing-correlates of PA violation are processed in L1 and L2 speakers. In all experiments, specific attention has been devoted to individual differences both at the theoretical and empirical level. I showed that perceivers can display variability in processing as a function of biographic factors, in the quantity and quality of training in a second language, and in the presence of variables related to the construct of Theory-of-Mind (ToM). I support the view that the processing of intonational categories, modulated by Fundamental Frequency contours, links with the processing of segmental information, the semantic access at word-level, and the decoding of the information structure within the discourse model. The study of processing of pitch contours is a highly multidisciplinary discipline, but the different theoretical perspectives are not always considered within specific research. I propose to approach the study of pitch processing by trying to integrate the different theoretical and empirical approaches with the aim to use the available knowledge. This broader perspective considers the auditory categorization process, the integration of the sound-domain information with higher-order linguistic structure, and the modeling of individual variability of the perceivers. I support the view that the presence of individual traits that favor the efficient decoding of the interlocutor’s perspective and intentions correlates with a more efficient processing of the discourse information structure. I propose that this is observable through the manipulation of the associated intonational categories. I think that the adoption of a multidisciplinary perspective, centered on the processing of intonational categories, and the approach developed in this thesis is relevant to develop further the study of specific populations known to display less efficient processing of the pragmatic aspects of discourse, such as individuals with Autism Spectrum Conditions.

2015 - 2016, Information Technology is the matrix and engine of innovation and change. Thanks to it, various disciplines and sciences evolve and permeate each other. Terminology is one such example. InterActive Terminology for Europe (IATE) is the multilingual, interinstitutional terminological database of the European Union and its objective is to provide a centralised infrastructure for all the EU terminological resources, improving their usability and standardization. The objective of this research is to investigate how to improve IATE's linguistic and terminological resources. The present thesis outlines the most recent Information Technology (IT) developments oriented at IATE's terminology management. It focuses on the projects realized at the Directorate General for Translation of the European Parliament, aimed at the improvement of EU terminology through the use of termbases, as well as on the cooperation agreement between the Dipartimento di Scienze Politiche, Sociali e della Comunicazione of the University of Salerno and the Terminology Coordination Unit of the European Parliament, whose objective is to make the database terminology a tool for semantic interoperability, i.e. the ability of an informatics system to elaborate and exchange data while keeping their precise meaning, regardless of the means and mode used to represent it. ...[edited by Author], XXIX ciclo

The primary objective of this thesis is to investigate the role of individual variation in metaphor interpretation. The scientific theoretical debate has traditionally treated metaphor interpretation from one and the same perspective which focuses exclusively on what the linguistic input is like (e.g., metaphoric vs. literal language) and which has disregarded up to now who the processor is. Experiments on metaphor understanding have been conducted on a similar vein, both in adulthood and development. Recently, however, a few preliminary studies have provided evidence in favour of the possibility that interpreting metaphor may change in terms of quality of the interpretation and/or underlying cognitive effort depending on some characteristics of the speaker. Yet, a systematic line of experimental research that informs us about the role of individual variation in metaphor interpretation seems essential to refine research on metaphor, but still it is missing. The main aim of this thesis is to shed light on this issue: understanding if and how metaphor processing varies depending on the speakers’ characteristics. This was done by targeting two specific issues. First, by investigating which cognitive abilities scaffold the development of metaphor understanding in pre-school years. Second, by exploring the role of Education background and cognitive performance in adults’ metaphor processing. This dissertation explores the temporal coordination of articulatory gestures in various segmental conditions in Italian, by comparing onset and coda singletons as well as word-final and intervocalic consonant clusters in a Tuscan variety of Italian. Articulatory models of syllable structure assume that the coordination between the vocalic gesture and the consonantal gesture may differ in onset vs. coda and in singletons vs. clusters. Based on previous literature on different languages, we expect to find differences in the temporal coordination of singletons and clusters in Italian too. In addition, recent literature suggests that the articulatory and coarticulatory properties of the segments play an important role in determining the details of the coordination patterns, and that not all segments or segmental sequences behave in the same way as far as their gestural coordination relations are concerned. Thus, an additional aim of this work is to compare consonants with different coarticulatory properties (in the sense of modifications of C articulation in varying vocalic contexts) and seek for possible relations between coarticulation and coordination patterns. The methodology used is new. We used an original system for the acquisition, realtime synchronization and analysis of acoustic, electropalatographic (EPG) and ultrasound tongue imaging (UTI) data, called SynchroLing. EPG and UTI instrumental techniques provide complementary information on, respectively, linguo-palatal contact patterns in the anterior vocal tract and midsagittal profiles of the whole tongue, including postdorsum and root. SynchroLing allows real-time inspection of contacts in the artificial palate and tongue midsagittal movements, coupled with acoustics. [...]

The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, I present the findings of bibliographical research conducted in an attempt to identify first women authors of ELT materials in Italy. It appears that, in the period between 1896 and 1918, twenty-three different women authors produced at least one ELT publication each. Secondly, I focus on two women authors whose contribution to promoting the learning and teaching of English in that period was particularly significant. I argue that Pia Padovani’s (1904, 1906) and Anna Benedetti’s (1915) views on the goals, priorities and language teaching methodologies are of particular relevance and I analyse the prefaces to their textbooks in an attempt to amplify our knowledge of the history of English language teaching in the early 20th-century Italy.

Linguistic communication through printed texts is asynchronous – lacking a biunivocal and reciprocal temporal correspondence between sender and receiver – and this is especially relevant in the case of dialogues designed to teach foreign languages. Imitating oral speech in written texts historically constitutes a whole discursive, prototypical yet not exclusive tradition of literary creation. Within the broad variational continuum of textual genres with written dialogues, those belonging to the field of Spanish as a Foreign Language face an added difficulty in their mimesis of spoken language: reproducing speech samples in linguistic diasystems that are different from those of the native language of the receiver. At the end of the 19th century, the importance of oral speech was emphasised in linguistics; however, it was only later that the diamesic aspects of speech were distinguished from the conceptual ones. Without claiming to expose anything novel, the origin of this unbroken teaching tradition will be outlined in order to analyse what samples of conversationality were created particularly for Italian-speaking Spanish learners from the end of the 19th century until the emergence of sound recording at the beginning of the 20th century, what type of “written spoken language” or “written orality” (“escritur(al)idad”, writtenness)2 tried to account, at least in part, for expressions belonging to an informal and relaxed conversation, and what linguistic theories supported the evolution of this variational continuum.
