5. A structured literature review on construction conflict prevention and resolution: A modified approach for engineering

Abstract

In the face of several uncertainties in the construction industry, conflicts and disputes seem inevitable. The aim of this systematic literature review of methodologies for prevention and resolution of conflicts was to develop an updated guidance for conflict management in the construction industry. To achieve this, we developed a novel tool termed Modified Reporting Items for Structured Reviews in Engineering and Technology (MORISE) that considered a modified tool from the original literature review method Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Three databases, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE), were searched and 61 articles were shortlisted. In terms of frequency of reasons cited as causes for disputes, payment regimes and delays rank first, followed by written agreement interpretation and changes in projects. Acceptable approaches to resolution of disputes include negotiation, arbitration, facilitation, and dispute resolution boards. This study were able to make a clear distinction between methodologies adopted by various researchers for the prevention and resolution of conflicts and show that in addition to prevention of conflicts, there are comprehensive and suitable techniques to resolve conflicts, which can be adopted in practice.

34. Model-based cost estimation for infrastructure projects: a case study

Abstract

The architecture, Engineering, and Construction industry faces an ongoing digitalization. This study investigates how infrastructure projects practice cost estimation, what is hindering automated cost estimation, and how automated cost estimation can be further developed. A case study with integrated project delivery was studied. The collected data were categorized and analyzed after three cornerstones for digital transformation: people, process, and technology. This study finds current practices time-consuming, error-prone, and inefficient. However, modelbased cost estimation can result in higher efficiency and fewer errors. Concerning people, relevant training and mindset identified crucial elements. Concerning process, increased workload due to integrated project delivery, time pressure, and problems with attaching correct classification codes to objects in BIM resulted in incomplete models hindering automated cost estimation. The identified hinders concerning technology were not worth mentioning. Suggested improvements include relevant training and alignment between today's object-oriented BIM and the process-oriented standard specification of work for infrastructure projects

35. Enabling automation of BIM-based cost estimation by semantic web technology

Abstract

While research on semantic web technology within the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry has significantly increased, there are still few practical and multidisciplinary results. Picking low hanging fruits might be one possible solution to make AEC practitioners interested in semantic web technology. Cost estimation has been a manual and repetitive task prone to human error. We investigate how semantic web technology can support BIM-based automated cost estimation and what challenges that can appear. Standardized specifications of work for Norwegian road projects (with process codes and process descriptions) were linked to an IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) property set by semantic web technology. Future projects that use the standardized specifications of work can adopt the established setup and thereby automate cost estimation with minimal efforts. This practical approach will accelerate the application of semantic web technology in the AEC industry to automate services.

36. Samspill i bygg- og anleggsprosjekter: teori og praksis

Abstract

Samspill som kontraktstrategi har, i litteraturen, en rekke definisjoner. Mangfoldet av definisjoner gjør det vanskelig å konkretisere hva samspill egentlig er. Denne studien vil ta for seg hvordan samspill beskrives i litteratur og sammenligne det med hvordan samspill ser ut i prosjekter som kaller seg samspillsprosjekter. Fokus for sammenligningen vil være de harde (kontraktsfestede og/eller formelle) elementene og studien tar for seg 44 bygg- og anleggsprosjekter, basert på 39 intervjuer. Målet er å se på hvorvidt litteraturen i tilstrekkelig grad beskriver de forhold som praktiseres og med det adressere mangfoldet av definisjoner som finnes på begrepet i dag og hvorvidt de tilstrekkelig beskriver samspill slik denne strategien opptrer. Studien viser at det, på tvers av de identifiserte harde elementene, ikke er ett eneste som er felles for samtlige prosjekter. Dette kan komme av at intervjuobjektene ikke har forstått hva samspill innebærer eller at minstekravene i litteraturen er for strenge og ikke i tilstrekkelig grad beskriver konseptets realitet. Men også at strategien i større grad fungerer som et taktisk valg i gjennomføringen av en gitt kontrakt i stedet for en separat kontraktstrategi. Abstract

This paper deals with procurement routes in public building and construction projects in Norway. Seen from a practical point of view, as well as from a theoretical one, it is important to improve methods for selection of procurement procedure, contract model, and compensation formats. The paper objective is to find out if public owners select a procurement route according to recommended practice. The sources are literature, support material for two software tools for selection of the procurement route, and documentation from 22 public building and construction projects in Norway. According to the literature and the support material for the two software tools, the answer to what is the proper procurement route will depend on the characteristics of each project. The documentation study implies that public owners continue to select the same procurement route as they are in the habit of. They do not consider what procurement route suits each single project, and therefore they do not select the route according to recommended practice. The paper calls for innovation and better supported selection of the procurement route in public building and construction projects. Abstract

Purpose The purpose of the study is to map previous and current construction procurement research to further develop the research in the Nordic counties. Design/Methodology/Approach Mapping of previous and current research based on search in national database. The analysis is based on research perspectives, empirical contexts and research methods. Findings That the blind spots are partly overlapping, but that there is potential for knowledge transfer in some areas. There is also the potential for a Nordic research program on one or several of the blind spots. Research Limitations/Implications The study is limited to PhD and licentiate-thesis reports in Norway and Sweden. Further research should include the other Nordic countries and a more extensive literature review including journal articles to broaden the scope. Findings have implications on collaborative Nordic research initiatives, knowledge transfer and in a longer perspective on the level of procurement knowledge in industry and society. Practical Implications Findings provide a base for future research collaborations, initiatives and applications. Originality/Value Findings provide a comprehensive understanding of construction procurement research in the Nordic countries, starting with Norway and Sweden. 41. What Makes an Alliance an Alliance – Experiences from Australian Infrastructure Projects

Abstract

This research shows that alliancing can be identified by 25 hard elements. It seems the case that no single element is unique to alliancing, but rather it is the combination of elements that really makes the alliancing model a unique project delivery model. The study identified twelve project characteristics that make a project suitable for alliancing, along with an explanation of how the alliance elements address these characteristics. These findings will help assist academics and practitioners new to the alliancing model understand what alliancing is and when it is suitable to use. Copyright © 2018 The Authors.

48. Samspill i gjennomføring av byggeprosjekter - Former for samspill og effekter

Abstract

Mange store statlige bygge- og anleggsprosjekter har brukt ulike former for samspill mellom partene i utbyggingsprosjektene. Forskningsprosjektets overordnede mål er å beskrive hvilke former for samspill som er benyttet mellom partene i et utvalg statlige investeringsprosjekter, samt vurdere om det er mulig å si om samspill har hatt noen effekt. De metoder som er benyttet er litteraturstudier, intervjuer og dokumentanalyser. Resultatene tyder på at begrepet samspill (partnering) ikke er entydig. Likevel kan vi se likhetstrekk i hvordan begrepet er brukt og hvilke elementer som innlemmes. Generelt er det imidlertid mer fokus på prosessen i løpet av gjennomføringen av byggeprosjektene, enn på det ferdigstilte produktet og effektene av det. Dette kan ha sammenheng med at aktørene måles på prosess. Litteraturen tyder på positive effekter av samspill både på kort og lang sikt. © SINTEF Teknologi og samfunn
