Our current study aimed to evaluate the role of inflammatory markers in limited disease (LD) small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients undergoing thoracic chemoradiotherapy (TCR). Patients and methods: We retrospectively analyzed a total number of 350 SCLC patients diagnosed with LD SCLC who received TCR between 1999 and 2017 and had available blood tests within 2 weeks prior to the start of TCR. Serum C-reactive protein (CRP), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), hemoglobin (Hb) levels, and platelet count (Pc) were evaluated as potential inflammatory markers. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis was performed for overall survival (OS). For comparison of survival curves, the log-rank (Mantel–Cox) test was used. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional HRs were used to assess the influence of cofactors on OS. Results: Univariate analysis for OS revealed a statistically significant effect for LDH >400 U/L (HR 2.05 U/L; 95% CI 1.29–3.26 U/L; P=0.002), prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI; HR 0.58; 95% CI 0.40–0.85; P=0.005), CRP >50 mg/L (HR 1.49 mg/L; 95% CI 1.05–2.10 mg/L; P=0.026), and Karnofsky performance scale (KPS) 70 years), Hb levels, and Pc did not influence survival. In multivariate analysis, OS was significantly affected by PCI (HR 0.64; 95% CI 0.43–0.94; P=0.026), LDH >400 U/L (HR 1.91 U/L; 95% CI 1.21–3.05 U/L; P=0.006), and CRP >50 mg/L (HR 1.43 mg/L; 95% CI 1.01–2.04 mg/L; P=0.045). KPS (≤70%) did not influence survival in multivariate analysis. Conclusion: Elevated CRP and LDH seem to be the independent prognostic factors for OS in LD SCLC patients undergoing TCR. However, elevated NLR was not found to be an independent prognostic factor for OS if taken prior to TCR. LDH and CRP are easily available blood tests and do not require additional resources for routine use and could be useful for clinical decision making. Patients received C12 therapy at a dose of 3 Gray equivalents (GyE) (relative biological effectiveness [RBE]) per fraction up to 24 GyE RBE, followed by 50 GyE of photon IMRT in 25 fractions. Conclusion: IMRT plus C12 ion boost as a definitive or adjuvant treatment for pelvic ACCs seems to be a promising therapeutic option. No unexpected toxicity was detected and the observed toxicity remained consistently low. The initial treatment response is promising and similar to that experienced for head and neck ACCs. In recent years, the scientific community has called for improvements in the credibility, robustness and reproducibility of research, characterized by increased interest and promotion of open and transparent research practices. While progress has been positive, there is a lack of consideration about how this approach can be embedded into undergraduate and postgraduate research training. Specifically, a critical overview of the literature which investigates how integrating open and reproducible science may influence student outcomes is needed. In this paper, we provide the first critical review of the literature surrounding the integration of open and reproducible scholarship into teaching and learning and its associated outcomes in students. Our review highlighted how embedding open and reproducible scholarship appears to be associated with (i) students’ scientific literacies (i.e. students’ understanding of open research, consumption of science, and the development of transferable skills); (ii) student engagement (i.e. motivation and engagement with learning, collaboration, and engagement in open research) and (iii) students’ attitudes towards science (i.e. trust in science and confidence in research findings). However, our review also identified a need for more robust and rigorous methods within pedagogical research, including more interventional and experimental evaluations of teaching practice. We discuss implications for teaching and learning scholarship. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

- Abstract
Free-living amoebae often harbor obligate intracellular bacterial symbionts. Amoebophilus (A.) asiaticus is a representative of a lineage of amoeba symbionts in the phylum Bacteroidota. Here, we analyse the transcriptome of A. asiaticus strain 5a2 at four time points during its infection cycle and replication within the Acanthamoeba host using RNA sequencing. Our results reveal a dynamic transcriptional landscape throughout different A. asiaticus life cycle stages. Many intracellular bacteria and pathogens utilize eukaryotic-like proteins (ELPs) for host cell interaction and the A. asiaticus 5a2 genome shows a particularly high abundance of ELPs. We show the expression of all genes encoding ELPs and found many ELPs to be differentially expressed. At the replicative stage of A. asiaticus, ankyrin repeat proteins and tetratricopeptide/Sel1-like repeat proteins were upregulated. At the later time points, high expression levels of a type 6 secretion system that likely prepares for a new infection cycle after lysing its host, were found. This study reveals comprehensive insights into the intracellular lifestyle of A. asiaticus and highlights candidate genes for host cell interaction. The results from this study have implications for other intracellular bacteria such as other amoeba-associated bacteria and the arthropod symbionts Cardinium forming the sister lineage of A. asiaticus.

- Abstract

A search is presented for dark matter produced in association with a hadronically decaying Wor Zboson using 3.2fb−1 of pp collisions at √s=13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with a hadronic jet compatible with a Wor Zboson and with large missing transverse momentum are analysed. The data are consistent with the Standard Model predictions and are interpreted in terms of both an effective field theory and a simplified model containing dark matter.

- Abstract

The composition of biofilms in chronic wound infections of dogs is unclear. In the present study, histologically identified biofilms attached to sutures in chronically infected wounds of three dogs were examined by next generation sequencing of total DNA extracted from formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissue samples. The analysis identified an inhomogeneous bacterial composition in three tissues containing biofilms. Some of the identified bacterial families such as Staphylococci and Streptococci have been found before in biofilms associated with human and canine wounds but in this study were quantitatively in the minority. The majority of the reads classified as bacterial sequences had the highest identity with sequences belonging to the Porphyromonadaceae, Deinococcaceae, Methylococcaceae, Nocardiaceae, Alteromonadaceae, and Propionibacteriaceae and thus taxons of so far minor relevance in veterinary medicine. The formation of biofilms on surgical implants is thought to play a major role in chronic infection and wound-healing disorders and has been rarely described in veterinary medicine. Due to poor and unreliable results from bacterial culturing, histology may be an economic tool for the detection of biofilms. In this study, the prevalence of biofilms on surgical suture materials and swabs with chronic wound-healing complications in dogs, cats, and horses was assessed by histologic examination using hematoxylin and eosin, Gram, and Giemsa stains, as well as periodic acid–Schiff reaction. Of the 91 tissue samples with intralesional suture material or swab residues associated with inflammation, only 2 contained bacterial colonies arranged in an extracellular polymeric matrix consistent with a biofilm. The results of this study suggest that biofilms on suture material may occur in veterinary medicine. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

- Abstract
