Primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) is a major cause of visual impairment, particularly in Asia. Although effective screening tools are necessary, the current gold standard is complex and time-consuming, requiring extensive expertise. Artificial intelligence has introduced new opportunities for innovation in ophthalmic imaging. Anterior chamber depth (ACD) is a key risk factor for angle closure and has been suggested as a quick screening parameter for PACG. This study aims to develop an AI algorithm to quantitatively predict ACD from anterior segment photographs captured using a portable smartphone slit-lamp microscope. We retrospectively collected 204,639 frames from 1586 eyes, with ACD values obtained by anterior-segment OCT. We developed two models, (Model 1) diagnosable frame extraction and (Model 2) ACD estimation, using SWSL ResNet as the machine learning model. Model 1 achieved an accuracy of 0.994. Model 2 achieved an MAE of 0.093 ± 0.082 mm, an MSE of 0.123 ± 0.170 mm, and a correlation of R = 0.953. Furthermore, our model’s estimation of the risk for angle closure showed a sensitivity of 0.943, specificity of 0.902, and an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.923 (95%CI: 0.878–0.968). We successfully developed a high-performance ACD estimation model, laying the groundwork for predicting other quantitative measurements relevant to PACG screening.

BackgroundIn many countries, emergency medical systems were responsible for initial treatment of patients with COVID-19. Generally, acceptance by medical institutions may not be sufficient, and it may take much time to determine the medical institution to which to transport the patient. This problem is termed “difficulty in hospital acceptance (DIH),” and it is used as a key performance indicator in the assessment of the EMS in Japan. The purpose of this study was to reveal the factors associated with the DIH during the COVID-19 pandemic using dataset in the ORION (Osaka emergency information Research Intelligent Operation Network system).MethodsThis was a retrospective descriptive study with a 3-year study period from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2021. We included patients who were recorded in the ORION system during the study period. The primary endpoint was defined as DIH. Multivariable logistic regression model was used to assess factors associated with DIH during the COVID-19 pandemic and calculated their adjusted odds ratio (AOR) and associated 95% confidence interval (CI).Results1,078,850 patients included in this study. Of them, 41,140 patients (3.8%) experienced DIH and 1,037,710 patients (96.2%) did not experience DIH. The median age was 71 years (IQR: 45–82), and 543,760 patients (50.4%) were male. In this study, SpO2, body temperature, and epidemic period of COVID-19 were associated with difficulty in hospital acceptance. The highest AOR of SpO2 was 80% or less (AOR: 1.636, [95% CI: 1.532–1.748]), followed by 81–85% (AOR: 1.584, [95% CI: 1.459–1.721]). The highest AOR of body temperature was 38.0–38.9°C (AOR: 1.969 [95% CI: 1.897–2.043]), followed by 39°C or higher (AOR: 1.912 [95% CI: 1.829–1.998]). The highest AOR of epidemic period of COVID-19 was the 4th wave (AOR: 2.134, [95% CI: 2.065–2.205]), followed by the 3rd wave (AOR: 1.842, [95% CI: 1.785–1.901]).ConclusionIn this study, we revealed factors associated with the DIH during the COVID-19 pandemic. As various factors are involved in the spread of an unknown infectious disease, it is necessary not only to plan in advance but also to take appropriate measures according to the situation in order to smoothly accept emergency patients.

IntroductionRecently, the increasing attention to mental states and psychophysical health has fueled the research into methods that can aid in relaxation and recovery. Traditional methods like meditation and sauna, while effective, have their limitations; thus, the need for more accessible and convenient alternatives.MethodsOur innovative approach combines monaural beats with music, attempting to replicate the relaxing effects of a sauna in the auditory domain.ResultsIn comparison to normal music and silent condition, the power of the theta active band significantly increased when listening to our modified music. Furthermore, after listening to modified music, there was a significant increase in mismatch negativity (MMN) amplitude in the oddball task. Additionally, participants’ subjective responses to a questionnaire indicated significant changes in body relaxation and other metrics after listening to the processed music.DiscussionThis state is considered similar to the “totonou” state, which manifests in physical and mental feelings of relaxation, pleasure, and mental clarity in the sauna. Thus, the present research proposes a convenient method for achieving relaxation, opening an avenue for individuals to customize their “totonou” music based on personal preferences.

A frequency range exceeding approximately 30 Hz, denoted as the gamma frequency range, is associated with various cognitive functions, consciousness, sensory integration, short-term memory, working memory, encoding and maintenance of episodic memory, and retrieval processes. In this study, we proposed a new form of gamma stimulation, called gamma music, combining 40 Hz auditory stimuli and music. This gamma music consists of drums, bass, and keyboard sounds, each containing a 40 Hz frequency oscillation. Since 40 Hz stimuli are known to induce an auditory steady-state response (ASSR), we used the 40 Hz power and phase locking index (PLI) as indices of neural activity during sound stimulation. We also recorded subjective ratings of each sound through a questionnaire using a visual analog scale. The gamma music, gamma drums, gamma bass, and gamma keyboard sounds showed significantly higher values in 40 Hz power and PLI compared to the control music without a 40 Hz oscillation. Particularly, the gamma keyboard sound showed a potential to induce strong ASSR, showing high values in these indices. In the subjective ratings, the gamma music, especially the gamma keyboard sound, received more relaxed, comfortable, preferred, pleasant, and natural impressions compared to the control music with conventional gamma stimulation. These results indicate that our proposed gamma music has potential as a new method for inducing ASSR. Particularly, the gamma keyboard sound proved to be an effective acoustic source for inducing a strong ASSR while preserving the comfortable and pleasant sensation of listening to music. Our developed gamma music, characterized by its pleasantness to the human ear, offers a significant advantage for the long-term use of gamma stimulation. The utilization of this music could potentially reduce the physical and psychological burden on participants compared to conventional 40 Hz stimuli. This music is not only expected to contribute to fundamental neuroscience research utilizing ASSR but also to facilitate the implementation of gamma music-based interventions aimed at enhancing human cognitive functions in everyday life.

Background: Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), the most common form of hereditary cerebral small vessel disease (SVD), currently lacks disease-modifying treatments. Adrenomedullin (AM), a vasoactive peptide with angiogenic, vasodilatory, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidative properties, shows potential effects on the neuro-glial-vascular unit. Objective: The AdrenoMedullin for CADASIL (AMCAD) study aims to assess the efficacy and safety of AM in patients with CADASIL. Sample size: Overall, 60 patients will be recruited. Methods: The AMCAD is a multicenter, investigator-initiated, single-arm phase II trial. Patients with a confirmed CADASIL diagnosis, based on NOTCH3 genetic testing, will receive an 8-h AM treatment (15 ng/kg/min) for 14 days following a baseline assessment (from day 1 to day 14). Follow-up evaluations will be performed on days 15, 28, 90, and 180. Study outcomes: The primary endpoint is the cerebral blood flow change rate in the frontal cortex, evaluated using arterial spin labeling magnetic resonance imaging, from baseline to day 28. Summary statistics, 95% confidence intervals, and a one-sample t-test will be used for analysis. Conclusion: The AMCAD study aims to represent the therapeutic potential of AM in patients with CADASIL, addressing an unmet medical need in this challenging condition. BackgroundThe novel corona virus (COVID-19) pandemic occurred worldwide. Although an excessive burden was placed on emergency medical institutions treating urgent and severe patients, its impact on patient outcome remains unknown. This study aimed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 on the emergency medical services (EMS) system and patient outcomes in Osaka Prefecture, Japan.MethodsThis was a retrospective descriptive study with a study period from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2021. We included patients who were transported by ambulance and had cleaned data that was recorded in the ORION system. The study endpoints were the number of patients transported by ambulance and the number of deaths among these patients in each month. To assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the EMS system, the incidence rate ratio (IRR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using 2019 as the reference year. Mortalities were evaluated based on deaths in the emergency department and deaths at 21 days after hospitalization.ResultsThe numbers of patients transported by ambulance were 500,194 in 2019, 443,321 in 2020 (IRR: 0.88, 95% CI: 0.87–0.88), and 448,054 in 2021 (IRR: 0.90, 95% CI: 0.89–0.90). In 2019, the number of patients transported by ambulance and who died in the emergency departments was 4,980, compared to 5,485 in 2020 (IRR: 1.10, 95% CI; 1.06–1.44) and 5,925 in 2021 (IRR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.15–1.24). In 2019, the number of patients who died within 21 days after hospitalization was 11,931, compared to 11,913 in 2020 (IRR; 1.00, 95% CI; 0.98–1.03) and 13,376 in 2021 (IRR; 1.12, 95% CI; 1.09–1.15).ConclusionThe COVID-19 pandemic decreased the number of ambulance requests and worsened mortality of patients transported by ambulance in Osaka Prefecture during 2021.

Piceatannol (PIC), a polyphenol abundant in passion fruit seeds, is reported to promote fat metabolism. This study investigated whether PIC affects sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) expression and metabolic factors in C2C12 skeletal muscle cells. C2C12 myotubes were stimulated with PIC, and alterations in gene expression, protein levels, mitochondrial DNA content, and fatty acid levels were assessed using real-time PCR, Western blotting, and Nile red staining. Furthermore, we examined changes in SIRT1 expression following the consumption of a test food containing 100 mg PIC for 2 weeks among adults with varying age and body mass index ranges. Both PIC and passion fruit seed extract induced SIRT1 expression in C2C12 myotubes to a greater extent than resveratrol. PIC also increased the expression of genes associated with mitochondrial biogenesis and fatty acid utilization, increased mitochondrial DNA content, and suppressed oleic acid-induced fat accumulation. Moreover, participants who consumed PIC exhibited significantly higher SIRT1 mRNA expression in whole blood compared to those in the placebo group. These findings suggest that PIC induces SIRT1 expression both in vitro and in the human body, which may promote mitochondrial biosynthesis and fat metabolism.

Medicine - Abstract
Objectives The COVID-19 pandemic might have affected emergency medical services transports for self-harm in Japan. However, the available data are insufficient to fully understand the pandemic’s impact on ambulance transports due to self-harm. This study aimed to investigate the change in the incidence of ambulance transports for self-harm from 2018 to 2021 and to identify vulnerable age groups during the pandemic.Design A population-based observational study using a database from the Osaka Prefectural Government.Setting The database covers the entire area of Osaka Prefecture and included information on ambulance transports and hospital details.Participants Ambulance transport of patients due to self-harm from 2018 through 2021 was investigated.Primary outcome measures The primary outcome was the incidence of ambulance transport for self-harm.Results We analysed 10 843 patients. Their median age was 38 years, and 69.0% were female. We observed an increasing trend of the incidence rate in cases per 100 000 population per year from 29.4 in 2018 to 31.2 in 2021. However, after adjusting for age group, sex and month, there was no difference in the incidence of ambulance transport due to self-harm in 2019 (adjusted incidence rate ratio (aIRR) 1.007; 95% CI 0.955 to 1.063), 2020 (aIRR 1.041; 95% CI 0.987 to 1.098) and 2021 (aIRR 1.022; 95% CI 0.968 to 1.078), compared with 2018. We observed no difference in 21-day mortality from 2018 through 2021. In the age group of 20–29 years, despite no difference in 2019 compared with 2018, we found an 11.7% increase in the incidence of ambulance transport due to self-harm in 2020 (aIRR 1.117; 95% CI 1.002 to 1.245) and no difference in 2021.Conclusions There was no difference in the incidence of ambulance transport due to self-harm and 21-day mortality from 2018 through 2021. However, the incidence rate of ambulance transport due to self-harm in 2020 increased in the age group of 20–29 years.

Background: Few cohort studies have used multiple surveys of screening attendance to simultaneously evaluate the effectiveness of fecal occult blood test (FOBT) and colonoscopy. Methods: We analyzed data of 30,381 middle-aged Japanese adults from a population-based prospective cohort study. Information on FOBT and colonoscopy was obtained from three questionnaire surveys (every 5 years). We classified the subjects into three groups: the FOBT (15,649 subjects), screening colonoscopy (2,407 subjects), and unscreened (12,325 subjects) groups. We used the unscreened group as the reference group to compare the mortality and incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC). Results: During the 14-year follow-up, 64, 12, and 104 CRC deaths were identified in the FOBT, screening colonoscopy, and unscreened groups, respectively. The risk of CRC death reduced with increasing the number of FOBTs (P for trend = 0.02) and was reduced by 44% in the subjects screened twice or thrice using FOBT (hazard ratio [HR] 0.56; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.33–0.94). Significant decreases were seen for the incidence of CRC but not seen for the incidence of non-advanced CRC in the FOBT group. Concerning the screening colonoscopy, subjects screened at the start of follow-up showed a 69% reduced risk of CRC death (HR 0.31; 95% CI, 0.10–0.9996). Significant decreases were also seen for the incidence of CRC and non-advanced CRC in the subjects screened at the start of follow-up. Conclusion: FOBT, depending on the number of FOBTs, and colonoscopy, depending on recency, reduced the risk of death due to CRC and the incidence of CRC.

The third Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-3) describes signals detected with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo up to the end of their third observing run. Updating the previous GWTC-2.1, we present candidate gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences during the second half of the third observing run (O3b) between 1 November 2019, 15∶00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and 27 March 2020, 17∶00 UTC. There are 35 compact binary coalescence candidates identified by at least one of our search algorithms with a probability of astrophysical origin p_{astro}>0.5. Of these, 18 were previously reported as low-latency public alerts, and 17 are reported here for the first time. Based upon estimates for the component masses, our O3b candidates with p_{astro}>0.5 are consistent with gravitational-wave signals from binary black holes or neutron-star–black-hole binaries, and we identify none from binary neutron stars. However, from the gravitational-wave data alone, we are not able to measure matter effects that distinguish whether the binary components are neutron stars or black holes. The range of inferred component masses is similar to that found with previous catalogs, but the O3b candidates include the first confident observations of neutron-star–black-hole binaries. Including the 35 candidates from O3b in addition to those from GWTC-2.1, GWTC-3 contains 90 candidates found by our analysis with p_{astro}>0.5 across the first three observing runs. These observations of compact binary coalescences present an unprecedented view of the properties of black holes and neutron stars.

Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of reproductive-aged female patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of female patients aged 10–49 years, diagnosed with COVID-19 in Osaka, Japan, between January and November 2020. We assessed their epidemiological and clinical characteristics according to their pregnancy status. Results: A total of 4,156 patients were enrolled, of whom 29 (0.7%) were pregnant. Most patients exhibited mild symptoms, and 10.8% of the cases were asymptomatic. No moderate or severe cases were observed in pregnant women, whereas only 0.1% of the nonpregnant women had severe disease at diagnosis. No clusters were observed in the pregnant patients; however, most acquired the infection from a family member. Of the 29 pregnant women, 22 (75.9%) were hospitalized; whereas among the nonpregnant women, 579 (14.0%) were hospitalized (p < 0.001). No patients were admitted to the intensive care unit, and there were no deaths among women aged 10–49 years. Conclusions: Pregnant women accounted for 0.7% of the total cases of COVID-19 among women aged 10–49 years. Pregnant women were more likely to be hospitalized but generally had mild disease.

Abstract In our previous study, we successfully reproduced the illusory motion perceived in the rotating snakes illusion using deep neural networks incorporating predictive coding theory. In the present study, we further examined the properties of the network using a set of 1500 images, including ordinary static images of paintings and photographs and images of various types of motion illusions. Results showed that the networks clearly classified a group of illusory images and others and reproduced illusory motions against various types of illusions similar to human perception. Notably, the networks occasionally detected anomalous motion vectors, even in ordinally static images where humans were unable to perceive any illusory motion. Additionally, illusion-like designs with repeating patterns were generated using areas where anomalous vectors were detected, and psychophysical experiments were conducted, in which illusory motion perception in the generated designs was detected. The observed inaccuracy of the networks will provide useful information for further understanding information processing associated with human vision.

Abstract Aim The impact of the coronavirus disease (COVID‐19) pandemic on the emergency medical service system in Japan has not been fully revealed. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic in 2021 on the difficulty in hospital acceptance of patients and patient outcome in Osaka Prefecture. Methods This study was a descriptive epidemiological study with a 3‐year study period from January 2019 to December 2021. We included patients who were transported by ambulance and had registered in the Osaka Emergency Information Research Intelligent Operation Network (ORION) system. The primary end‐point of this study was the difficulty in hospital acceptance by month, and the secondary outcome was the mortality of patients who experience difficulty in hospital acceptance in each year. Results We included 1,302,646 cases in this study. The proportion of cases with difficulty in hospital acceptance was 2.74% (12,829/468,709) in 2019, 3.74% (15,527/414,987) in 2020, and 5.09% (21,311/418,950) in 2021. The crude odds ratio for 2020 was 1.38 (95% confidence interval, 1.35–1.41) and for 2021 was 1.90 (95% confidence interval, 1.86–1.95). In 2019, 218 patients with difficulty in hospital acceptance had died by 21 days after hospitalization, whereas the number increased to 405 in 2020 and 750 in 2021. Conclusion The number of patients experiencing difficulty in hospital acceptance during the COVID‐19 pandemic in Osaka Prefecture increased, and patient outcomes were worse than before the pandemic.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a severe complication in orthopedic surgeries. Herein, we developed a novel leg exercise apparatus (LEX) to encourage postoperative limb movement in bedridden patients to prevent VTE. We aimed to evaluate its feasibility and safety in individuals at risk of VTE. Twenty patients (four men, 16 women) who underwent total joint arthroplasty in the lower extremity were enrolled in this prospective study. Exercise using the LEX was performed for 5 min at 30 cycles/min, four times/day during postoperative days 1–7. Clinical assessments included the evaluation of vital signs, venous ultrasonography, and blood tests within seven days postoperatively, and adverse events (pulmonary embolism and cerebral hemorrhage) were monitored. Overall, 16/20 (80%) patients completed the 7-day exercise regimen. There were no cases of severe adverse events, changes in vital signs, or lower-extremity deep vein thrombosis in patients who performed exercises with the LEX. Thus, the results of this pilot study show that this novel apparatus may be a safe and feasible tool for VTE prophylaxis after joint arthroplasty of the lower extremities.

We report on the population properties of compact binary mergers inferred from gravitational-wave observations of these systems during the first three LIGO-Virgo observing runs. The Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog 3 (GWTC-3) contains signals consistent with three classes of binary mergers: binary black hole, binary neutron star, and neutron star–black hole mergers. We infer the binary neutron star merger rate to be between 10 and 1700 Gpc^{−3} yr^{−1} and the neutron star–black hole merger rate to be between 7.8 and 140 Gpc^{−3} yr^{−1}, assuming a constant rate density in the comoving frame and taking the union of 90% credible intervals for methods used in this work. We infer the binary black hole merger rate, allowing for evolution with redshift, to be between 17.9 and 44 Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} at a fiducial redshift (z=0.2). The rate of binary black hole mergers is observed to increase with redshift at a rate proportional to (1+z)^{κ} with κ=2.9_{-1.8}^{+1.7} for z≲1. Using both binary neutron star and neutron star–black hole binaries, we obtain a broad, relatively flat neutron star mass distribution extending from 1.2_{-0.2}^{+0.1} to 2.0_{-0.3}^{+0.3}M_{⊙}. We confidently determine that the merger rate as a function of mass sharply declines after the expected maximum neutron star mass, but cannot yet confirm or rule out the existence of a lower mass gap between neutron stars and black holes. We also find the binary black hole mass distribution has localized over- and underdensities relative to a power-law distribution, with peaks emerging at chirp masses of 8.3_{-0.5}^{+0.3} and 27.9_{-1.8}^{+1.9}M_{⊙}. While we continue to find that the mass distribution of a binary’s more massive component strongly decreases as a function of primary mass, we observe no evidence of a strongly suppressed merger rate above approximately 60M_{⊙}, which would indicate the presence of a upper mass gap. Observed black hole spins are small, with half of spin magnitudes below χ_{i}≈0.25. While the majority of spins are preferentially aligned with the orbital angular momentum, we infer evidence of antialigned spins among the binary population. We observe an increase in spin magnitude for systems with more unequal-mass ratio. We also observe evidence of misalignment of spins relative to the orbital angular momentum.

In this study, we have demonstrated electrochemical synthesis of polyphenylene (PP) deriving from 1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)benzene using a flow microreactor. The electrochemical flow microreactor allowed effective synthesis of a soluble PP without its deposition. The molecular weight of PP could be controlled by selecting reaction conditions for the electrochemical polymerization in the microreactor. In addition, the role of trimethylsilyl (TMS) group in this reaction process was clarified by the comparison to the polymerization of unsubstituted benzene.

Aim Self‐harm is a common ambulance call and is potentially affected by the COVID‐19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the incidence of ambulance transport due to self‐harm increased in 2020. Methods We undertook a population‐based observational study using a database from the Osaka prefectural government. Ambulance transport of patients due to self‐harm from 2016 through 2020 was investigated. We estimated adjusted incidence rate ratios using a Poisson regression model to compare the annual incidence rates of ambulance transport in 2017–2020 with those in 2016. We also provided age‐stratified analysis. Results We analyzed 13,648 patients. There was no difference in the incidence of ambulance transport due to self‐harm in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 compared with 2016. In the age group of 20–29 years, despite no difference in 2017–2019 compared with 2016, we found a 13.8% increase in the incidence of ambulance transport due to self‐harm in 2020 (adjusted incidence rate ratio, 1.138; 95% confidence interval, 1.025–1.265). Conclusions Although there was no difference in the incidence of ambulance transport due to self‐harm in 2017–2019, that in 2020 increased in the age group of 20–29 years.

A non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) may stimulate cells and tissues or result in cell death depending on the intensity of plasma at the target; therefore, we herein investigated the effects of non-thermal plasma under non-contact conditions on the healing of full-thickness wounds in diabetic mice (DM+ group) and normal mice (DM- group). A hydrogen peroxide colorimetric method and high performance liquid chromatography showed that APPJ produced low amounts of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Ten-week-old male C57BL/6j mice with normal blood glucose levels (DM- group) and 10-week-old male C57BLKS/J Iar-+Leprdb/+Leprdb mice (DM+ group) received two full-thickness cutaneous wounds (4 mm in diameter) on both sides of the dorsum. Wounds were treated with or without the plasma jet or argon gas for 1 minute and were then covered with a hydrocolloid dressing (Hydrocolloid), according to which mice were divided into the following groups: DM+Plasma, DM+Argon, DM+Hydrocolloid, DM-Plasma, DM-Argon, and DM-Hydrocolloid. Exudate weights, wound areas, and wound area ratios were recorded every day. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was performed to assess re-epithelialization and α-SMA immunohistological staining to evaluate the formation of new blood vessels. Non-thermal plasma under non-contact conditions reduced the production of exudate. Exudate weights were smaller in the DM+Plasma group than in the DM+Hydrocolloid and DM+Argon groups. The wound area ratio was smaller for plasma-treated wounds, and was also smaller in the DM+Plasma group than in the DM+Hydrocolloid and DM+Argon groups on days 1–21 (p

We search for gravitational-wave (GW) transients associated with fast radio bursts (FRBs) detected by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst Project, during the first part of the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (2019 April 1 15:00 UTC–2019 October 1 15:00 UTC). Triggers from 22 FRBs were analyzed with a search that targets both binary neutron star (BNS) and neutron star–black hole (NSBH) mergers. A targeted search for generic GW transients was conducted on 40 FRBs. We find no significant evidence for a GW association in either search. Given the large uncertainties in the distances of our FRB sample, we are unable to exclude the possibility of a GW association. Assessing the volumetric event rates of both FRB and binary mergers, an association is limited to 15% of the FRB population for BNS mergers or 1% for NSBH mergers. We report 90% confidence lower bounds on the distance to each FRB for a range of GW progenitor models and set upper limits on the energy emitted through GWs for a range of emission scenarios. We find values of order 10 ^51 –10 ^57 erg for models with central GW frequencies in the range 70–3560 Hz. At the sensitivity of this search, we find these limits to be above the predicted GW emissions for the models considered. We also find no significant coincident detection of GWs with the repeater, FRB 20200120E, which is the closest known extragalactic FRB.

An efficient synthesis of methoxy-substituted thioxanthylium salts has been developed. The reaction of diaryl sulfides with benzoyl chlorides in the presence of TfOH smoothly proceeded to give the desired thioxanthylium salts in good yields. In their UV–vis spectra, the maximum absorption wavelengths of methoxy-functionalized thioxanthylium salts were observed at around 460 nm, which show a drastic red shift compared to the parent thioxanthylium salts. The present reaction provides a versatile access to functionalized thioxanthylium salts, and therefore it constitutes a promising tool for the synthesis of biologically and photochemically active molecules.

In this paper, we describe a newly developed vision feedback method for improving the placement accuracy and success rate of a single nozzle capillary force gripper. The capillary force gripper was developed for the pick-and-place of mm-sized objects. The gripper picks up an object by contacting the top surface of the object with a droplet formed on its nozzle and places the object by contacting the bottom surface of the object with a droplet previously applied to the place surface. To improve the placement accuracy, we developed a vision feedback system combined with two cameras. First, a side camera was installed to capture images of the object and nozzle from the side. Second, from the captured images, the contour of the pre-applied droplet for placement and the contour of the object picked up by the nozzle were detected. Lastly, from the detected contours, the distance between the top surface of the droplet for object release and the bottom surface of the object was measured to determine the appropriate amount of nozzle descent. Through the experiments, we verified that the size matching effect worked reasonably well; the average placement error minimizes when the size of the cross-section of the objects is closer to that of the nozzle. We attributed this result to the self-alignment effect. We also confirmed that we could control the attitude of the object when we matched the shape of the nozzle to that of the sample. These results support the feasibility of the developed vision feedback system, which uses the capillary force gripper for heterogeneous and complex-shaped micro-objects in flexible electronics, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), soft robotics, soft matter, and biomedical fields.

We report the observation of gravitational waves from two compact binary coalescences in LIGO’s and Virgo’s third observing run with properties consistent with neutron star–black hole (NSBH) binaries. The two events are named GW200105_162426 and GW200115_042309, abbreviated as GW200105 and GW200115; the first was observed by LIGO Livingston and Virgo and the second by all three LIGO–Virgo detectors. The source of GW200105 has component masses $8.{9}_{-1.5}^{+1.2}$ and $1.{9}_{-0.2}^{+0.3}\,{M}_{\odot }$ , whereas the source of GW200115 has component masses $5.{7}_{-2.1}^{+1.8}$ and $1.{5}_{-0.3}^{+0.7}\,{M}_{\odot }$ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level). The probability that the secondary’s mass is below the maximal mass of a neutron star is 89%–96% and 87%–98%, respectively, for GW200105 and GW200115, with the ranges arising from different astrophysical assumptions. The source luminosity distances are ${280}_{-110}^{+110}$ and ${300}_{-100}^{+150}\,\mathrm{Mpc}$ , respectively. The magnitude of the primary spin of GW200105 is less than 0.23 at the 90% credible level, and its orientation is unconstrained. For GW200115, the primary spin has a negative spin projection onto the orbital angular momentum at 88% probability. We are unable to constrain the spin or tidal deformation of the secondary component for either event. We infer an NSBH merger rate density of ${45}_{-33}^{+75}\,{\mathrm{Gpc}}^{-3}\,{\mathrm{yr}}^{-1}$ when assuming that GW200105 and GW200115 are representative of the NSBH population or ${130}_{-69}^{+112}\,{\mathrm{Gpc}}^{-3}\,{\mathrm{yr}}^{-1}$ under the assumption of a broader distribution of component masses.

Aim To assess the impact of the Summit on Financial Markets and the World Economy held in Osaka City, Japan (G20 Osaka Summit) on the emergency medical services (EMS) system. Methods This study used the ORION database with its population‐based registry of emergency patients comprising both ambulance and in‐hospital records in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. The G20 Osaka Summit was held in Osaka City from 28 to 29 June, 2019. Changes in the EMS system and traffic regulations in Osaka were made during the period from 27 to 30 June, but we focused on the two summit days as the G20 period. The control periods comprised the same calendar days 1 week before and 1 week after the G20 period. We evaluated differences in the number of emergency transports, difficulties in obtaining hospital acceptance of patients, deaths among hospitalized emergency patients, and ambulance transport times between the two periods. Results In total, 2,590 cases in the G20 period and 5,152 cases in the control periods were registered. The relative risk of cases during the G20 versus control periods was 1.01 (0.96–1.05). Significant decreases were observed in the number of traffic accidents as ambulance calls (relative risk = 0.77; 95% confidence interval, 0.64–0.91). There were no significant differences in difficulties in obtaining hospital acceptance or deaths among hospitalized emergency patients between the G20 and control periods. In addition, ambulance transport times during the G20 period were not significantly longer than those in the control periods. Conclusion The G20 Osaka Summit did not adversely impact the provision of emergency medical care in the Osaka area.

We have developed an electrocatalytic asymmetric hydrogenation reaction using a proton-exchange membrane (PEM) reactor that employs a polymer electrolyte fuel cell and industrial electrolysis technologies. Reasonable enantioselectivities and excellent current efficiencies were obtained in the asymmetric hydrogenation of α-phenylcinnamic acid under mild conditions without adding a supporting electrolyte. The current density was crucial to achieving the improved results observed.

Gravitational wave astronomy ,Neutron stars ,Pulsars ,Astrophysics ,QB460-466 - Abstract
Isolated neutron stars that are asymmetric with respect to their spin axis are possible sources of detectable continuous gravitational waves. This paper presents a fully coherent search for such signals from eighteen pulsars in data from LIGO and Virgo’s third observing run (O3). For known pulsars, efficient and sensitive matched-filter searches can be carried out if one assumes the gravitational radiation is phase-locked to the electromagnetic emission. In the search presented here, we relax this assumption and allow both the frequency and the time derivative of the frequency of the gravitational waves to vary in a small range around those inferred from electromagnetic observations. We find no evidence for continuous gravitational waves, and set upper limits on the strain amplitude for each target. These limits are more constraining for seven of the targets than the spin-down limit defined by ascribing all rotational energy loss to gravitational radiation. In an additional search, we look in O3 data for long-duration (hours–months) transient gravitational waves in the aftermath of pulsar glitches for six targets with a total of nine glitches. We report two marginal outliers from this search, but find no clear evidence for such emission either. The resulting duration-dependent strain upper limits do not surpass indirect energy constraints for any of these targets.

The current tuberculosis treatment regimen is long and complex, and its failure leads to relapse and emergence of drug resistance. One of the major reasons underlying the extended chemotherapeutic regimen is the ability of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to attain a dormant state. Therefore, the identification of new lead compounds with chemical structures different from those of conventional anti-tuberculosis drugs is essential. The compound 3-(phenethylamino)demethyl(oxy)aaptamine (PDOA, 1), isolated from marine sponge of Aaptos sp., is known as an anti-dormant mycobacterial substance, and has been reported to be effective against the drug resistant strains of M. tuberculosis. However, its target protein still remains unclear. This study aims to clarify the structure–activity relationship of 1 using 15 synthetic analogues, in order to prepare a probe molecule for detecting the target protein of 1. We succeeded in creating the compound 15 with a photoaffinity group that retained antimicrobial activity, which proved to be a suitable probe molecule for identifying the target protein of 1.

Abstract Background The efficiency of cellulolytic enzymes is important in industrial biorefinery processes, including biofuel production. Chemical methods, such as alkali pretreatment, have been extensively studied and demonstrated as effective for breaking recalcitrant lignocellulose structures. However, these methods have a detrimental effect on the environment. In addition, utilization of these chemicals requires alkali- or acid-resistant equipment and a neutralization step. Results Here, a radical generator based on non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma technology was developed and tested to determine whether oxygen-radical pretreatment enhances cellulolytic activity. Our results showed that the viscosity of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) solutions was reduced in a time-dependent manner by oxygen-radical pretreatment using the radical generator. Compared with non-pretreated CMC, oxygen-radical pretreatment of CMC significantly increased the production of reducing sugars in culture supernatant containing various cellulases from Phanerochaete chrysosporium. The production of reducing sugar from oxygen-radical-pretreated CMC by commercially available cellobiohydrolases I and II was 1.7- and 1.6-fold higher, respectively, than those from non-pretreated and oxygen-gas-pretreated CMC. Moreover, the amount of reducing sugar from oxygen-radical-pretreated wheat straw was 1.8-fold larger than those from non-pretreated and oxygen-gas-pretreated wheat straw. Conclusions Oxygen-radical pretreatment of CMC and wheat straw enhanced the degradation of cellulose by reducing- and non-reducing-end cellulases in the supernatant of a culture of the white-rot fungus P. chrysosporium. These findings indicated that oxygen-radical pretreatment of plant biomass offers great promise for improvements in lignocellulose-deconstruction processes.

Previous studies have shown that people understand the future ancillary cost of durable goods such as an automotive vehicle. However, consumers tend to misunderstand the future benefits and costs of these goods. One of the most interesting discussions about consumer cognitive ability for future energy cost is the miles per gallon (MPG) illusion. In this study, we analyze people’s misunderstanding of the relationship between kilometers per liter (KPL) and the actual amount of fuel saved using vehicle owner survey data. We developed some questions to measure how much each person is involved with the MPG (or KPL) illusion. Additionally, our survey includes questions capturing some preferences affecting future fuel costs, such as time. Controlling for the most important respondent characteristics, such as income or gender, our empirical model analyzes the extent of the misunderstanding of how much actual KPL selections of personal auto vehicles are affected. We found that many Japanese consumers tend to misunderstand the relationship between KPL and actual fuel costs. Our results demonstrate that people who misunderstand the relationship tend to choose a higher 4.324 km per liter car than those who understand. This finding implies that the KPL illusion affects the KPL selection of consumers’ cars.

The mining industry makes up a large portion of the gross domestic product (GDP) in Australia, although securing human resources remains a problem in that field. The aim of this paper is to identify Australian university mining students’ preferences, considering it as potential employees’ preferences, for labour conditions at mining sites by means of a discrete choice experiment to promote efficient improvements in labour conditions in the mining industry. The data of 93 respondents analysed in this paper was collected by survey carried out in two universities in Australia. The result of the study showed that students have preferences on several factors such as wage, fatality rate, working position, commuting style, and company. Students having specific sociodemographic characters were found to show specific preferences on labour conditions. The results of this study indicate the potential average of appropriate monetary compensation for each factor.

An experimental and computational investigation of the space-charge effects occurring in ultrafast photoelectron spectroscopy from the gas phase is presented. The target sample CF _3 I is excited by ultrashort (100 fs) far-ultraviolet radiation pulses produced by a free-electron laser. The modification of the energy distribution of the photoelectrons, i.e. the shift and broadening of the spectral structures, is monitored as a function of the pulse intensity. The experimental results are compared with computational simulations which employ a Barnes–Hut algorithm to calculate the effect of individual Coulomb forces acting among the particles. In the presented model, a survey spectrum acquired at low radiation fluence is used to determine the initial energy distribution of the electrons after the photoemission event. The spectrum modified by the space-charge effects is then reproduced by N -body calculations that simulate the dynamics of the photoelectrons subject to the individual mutual Coulomb repulsion and to the attractive force of the positive ions. The employed numerical method accounts for the space-charge effects on the energy distribution and allows to reproduce the complete photoelectron spectrum and not just a specific photoemission structure. The simulations also provide information on the time evolution of the space-charge effects on the picosecond scale. Differences with the case of photoemission from solid samples are highlighted and discussed. The presented simulation procedure, although it omits the analysis of angular distribution, constitutes an effective simplified model that allows to predict and account for space-charge effects on the photoelectron energy spectrum in time-resolved photoemission experiments with high-intensity pulsed sources.

The cerebral cortex predicts visual motion to adapt human behavior to surrounding objects moving in real time. Although the underlying mechanisms are still unknown, predictive coding is one of the leading theories. Predictive coding assumes that the brain's internal models (which are acquired through learning) predict the visual world at all times and that errors between the prediction and the actual sensory input further refine the internal models. In the past year, deep neural networks based on predictive coding were reported for a video prediction machine called PredNet. If the theory substantially reproduces the visual information processing of the cerebral cortex, then PredNet can be expected to represent the human visual perception of motion. In this study, PredNet was trained with natural scene videos of the self-motion of the viewer, and the motion prediction ability of the obtained computer model was verified using unlearned videos. We found that the computer model accurately predicted the magnitude and direction of motion of a rotating propeller in unlearned videos. Surprisingly, it also represented the rotational motion for illusion images that were not moving physically, much like human visual perception. While the trained network accurately reproduced the direction of illusory rotation, it did not detect motion components in negative control pictures wherein people do not perceive illusory motion. This research supports the exciting idea that the mechanism assumed by the predictive coding theory is one of basis of motion illusion generation. Using sensory illusions as indicators of human perception, deep neural networks are expected to contribute significantly to the development of brain research.

Purpose: Venous thromboembolism prophylaxis is crucial. To facilitate active ankle movement in postoperative and bedridden patients, we developed a novel leg exercise apparatus (LEX). We investigated the effect of the LEX by comparing increases in lower extremity venous flow during different modes of exercise using the LEX. Methods: In eight healthy participants, we measured venous flow volume and velocity in the femoral vein using duplex ultrasonography at 1, 10, 20, and 30 min after completing three modes of 1-min LEX exercises. The exercises involved (1) rapid single motion (ankle dorsi–plantar flexion; 60 cycles/min); (2) slow single motion (30 cycles/min); and (3) slow combined leg motion. Results: Flow volumes after modes 1, 2, and 3 were 1.63-, 1.39-, and 1.53-fold above baseline at 30 min, respectively. Short periods of rapid single motion, with the LEX, improved postexercise lower extremity venous flow volumes at 30 min and mean venous flow velocity at 20 min, compared to slow single motion exercise. Even at slow speeds, combined-motion improved flow volume compared to single motion. Conclusion: Short periods of rapid single motion exercise, with the LEX, improved postexercise venous flow volumes in the lower extremities at 30 min and mean venous flow velocity at 20 min. These effects were greater than those produced by slow single motion exercises. However, even at slow speeds, combined-motion exercises improved flow volume compared to single motion. Therefore, LEX may prove effective at preventing thromboembolism in postoperative and bedridden patients.

Unraveling the origin of ultrafast demagnetization in multisublattice ferromagnetic materials requires femtosecond x-ray techniques to trace the magnetic moment dynamics on individual elements, but this could not yet be achieved in the hard x-ray regime. We demonstrate here the first ultrafast demagnetization dynamics in the ferromagnetic heavy 5d-transition metal Pt using circularly-polarized hard x-rays at an x-ray free electron laser (XFEL). The decay time of laser-induced demagnetization of L1 _0 -FePt is determined to be ${\tau }_{{\rm{Pt}}}=0.61\pm 0.04\,{\rm{ps}}$ using time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Pt L _3 edge, whereas magneto-optical Kerr measurements indicate the decay time for the total magnetization as ${\tau }_{{\rm{total}}}\lt 0.1\,\mathrm{ps}$ . A transient magnetic state with a photo-modulated ratio of the 3d and 5d magnetic moments is demonstrated for pump–probe delays larger than 1 ps. We explain this distinct photo-modulated transient magnetic state by the induced-moment behavior of the Pt atom and the x-ray probing depth. Our findings pave the way for the future use of XFELs to disentangle atomic spin dynamics contributions.

Past forest use often has a long‐term negative impact on the recovery of the original plant composition of semi‐natural grasslands, which is known as a legacy effect. This study investigates the impact of seed dispersal limitations on the restoration of grassland plant diversity on ski slopes with past forest use, highlighting the negative legacy effect on biodiversity recovery. Focusing on ski areas, our research contrasts the vegetation on ski slopes originally created on semi‐natural grasslands such as pasture (pasture slopes) and constructed by clearing secondary forests or conifer plantations (forest slopes). We examined species richness and diversity, considering seed dispersal modes, grassland management history, and seed source proximity. We reveal that the proximity to species‐rich grassland sources is pivotal for the restoration of native grassland vegetation. Particularly, wind‐dispersed species show significant recovery on slopes with sustained management for more than 70 years and those with neighboring species‐rich grasslands, suggesting that both the duration of management and the proximity to seed sources are critical for overcoming the legacy effects of past forest use. Meanwhile, gravity‐dispersed species failed to recover their richness and diversity regardless of both the duration of management and the proximity to seed source grasslands, which their diversity recovered where seed sources neighbored. Our findings emphasize the importance of considering seed dispersal limitation and management history in the restoration and conservation of grasslands and their biodiversity, particularly in landscapes experiencing past human intervention. Lower limb flexibility is known to be decreased in those living in mountainous areas, and musculoskeletal growth is often influenced by lifestyle factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the means of transportation to school and lower limb musculoskeletal function and low back pain.During routine medical examinations conducted in two cities in a prefecture in 2016, a questionnaire was administered. The parents of 15,259 students who attended elementary school answered questions evaluating the following parameters: (1) anteflexion limit in the standing posture, (2) crouching failure, (3) one leg standing failure, (4) low back pain during lumbar extension, (5) lower limb alignment abnormalities, and (6) flat foot. Students were divided into a walking commuting group (13,569 students) and a vehicle commuting group (1690 students), and findings were compared between the two groups using chi-square tests. In the walking and vehicle commuting groups, anteflexion limit in the standing posture was present in 23.3% and 26.1% of students, respectively (p = 0.013). Crouching failure was present in 4.6% and 7.3% of students (p 0.001); one leg standing failure in 5.3% and 8.5% of students (p 0.001); low back pain in 5.0% and 7.1% of students (p 0.001); positive leg alignment abnormalities in 7.3% and 8.0% of students (p = 0.260); and flat foot in 7.4% and 8.7% of students (p = 0.067), respectively. Significant differences were observed in all four of the failure measures. No significant differences were observed in the two methods evaluating morphological abnormalities. The decreased walking duration and increased sitting duration associated with vehicle commuting had little effect on lower limb morphology but could induce lower limb dysfunction and low-back pain in children. Thus, supplemental walking should be instated for children who commute by car.

- Abstract
To elucidate the clinical epidemiology and outcomes of patients with COVID-19 who received extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in the Osaka Prefecture, Japan. We conducted a retrospective study of COVID-19 patients who received ECMO. Among patients diagnosed with COVID-19 between January 29 and November 9, 2020, we targeted patients who received ECMO. The outcome was all-cause mortality. The baseline characteristics of the COVID-19 patients who received ECMO were summarized according to the outcome. A univariable logistic regression model was applied to evaluate the association of each factor (sex, age group, city of residence, presence of comorbidities, presence of close contact, use of dialysis, and wave) with all-cause mortality. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals were calculated.Among the 14,864 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 during the study period, 39 patients received ECMO. Fourteen patients (35.9%) died. All patients aged 30-39 years survived, whereas all patients aged ≥80 years died. Higher mortality was observed among patients in the higher age group, and theOf the 14,864 COVID-19 patients in Osaka Prefecture until November 2020, 39 underwent ECMO. Of these, 14 died.

- Abstract
Long-term field monitoring of leaf pigment content is informative for understanding plant responses to environments distinct from regulated chambers but is impractical by conventional destructive measurements. We developed PlantServation, a method incorporating robust image-acquisition hardware and deep learning-based software that extracts leaf color by detecting plant individuals automatically. As a case study, we applied PlantServation to examine environmental and genotypic effects on the pigment anthocyanin content estimated from leaf color. We processed >4 million images of small individuals of four Arabidopsis species in the field, where the plant shape, color, and background vary over months. Past radiation, coldness, and precipitation significantly affected the anthocyanin content. The synthetic allopolyploid A. kamchatica recapitulated the fluctuations of natural polyploids by integrating diploid responses. The data support a long-standing hypothesis stating that allopolyploids can inherit and combine the traits of progenitors. PlantServation facilitates the study of plant responses to complex environments termed "in natura".

People with high empathy interpret others’ mental states in daily social interactions. To investigate their characteristics of social cognitive processing, we compared neuromagnetic activities between 20 males with high empathy and 23 males with low empathy while watching social interactions between two characters. Twenty stories of four-panel comic strips were presented; the first three panels described social interactions, and the last panel described empathic/nonempathic behaviors. People with high empathy exhibited increased cortical activity in the right occipital region, medial part of the bilateral superior frontal gyri, and right posterior insula while watching social interaction scenes, which suggests that they paid attention to others’ faces and bodies, and inferred others’ mental states. They also exhibited increased cortical activity in the left superior frontal gyrus while watching empathic behaviors. Moreover, they exhibited increased cortical activity in the region around the left medial parieto-occipital sulcus, which is related to self-projection, while passively watching both empathic and nonempathic endings. Taken together, these results suggest that people with high empathy pay attention to others and actively infer others’ mental states while watching social interactions and that they reconstruct others’ mental states and intentions through self-projection after watching a sequence of others’ behaviors.

In recent years, there has been an increasing need for larger screens and higher definition displays, while projectors are becoming smaller and cheaper. Furthermore, an ultra-short-throw projector that can display on a large screen while significantly reducing the distance between the projector and screen is being developed. However, ultra-short-throw projectors are required to be precisely aligned with the screen, and if the screen is not flat, the projected image becomes distorted. Therefore, geometric correction projection technology is attracting attention for projection on curtains and the walls of living rooms instead of screens for realizing the correction of distortion during projection with ultra-short-throw projectors, projection mapping, signage, etc. We focused on developing a hologram with perfect command of the ray. Conventional geometry-correction systems are expensive systems that require a personal computer and a camera. In this study, we developed a geometric correction method applying holographic ray direction control technology to control a holographic ray at a low cost and in real time. In this paper, we studied the exposure technology and proposed a ray-direction control technology that combines a scanning laser projector that uses a hologram and a micro electro mechanical systems mirror. We also proposed and demonstrated the basic principle of a holographic surface projector (HSP), which uses hologram geometry correction technology. Finally, we constructed a geometrically corrected hologram exposure system using a depth camera and conducted geometrically corrected projection experiments.

The synthesis of α-amino acids was carried out in a continuous flow system. In this system, aldimines were efficiently generated in situ via the dehydration-condensation of aldehydes with anilines in a desiccant bed column filled with 4 A molecular sieves desiccant, followed by reaction with CO2 in an electrochemical flow microreactor to afford the α-amino acids in high to moderate yields. The present system can provide α-amino acids without using stoichiometric amounts of metal reagents or highly toxic cyanide reagents.
