Jackson Women's Health Organization (142 S. Ct. 2228 (2022)) ,Suppression of Trade in, and Circulation of, Obscene Literature and Articles of Immoral Use Act of 1873 - Abstract
The word 'abortion' pervades public discourse in the wake of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. But do people know what it means? Not only do law and medicine define it differently, but state legislatures have codified wildly different definitions of abortion across jurisdictions. This Article exposes inherent ambiguities at the boundaries of the term, particularly as it intersects with other categories of reproductive health care often viewed as separate, like pregnancy loss and ectopic pregnancy. By juxtaposing statutory text with real people's experiences of being denied care in states with abortion bans, this Article reveals how those ambiguities cause tragic results. This Article's analysis also tracks how antiabortion legislatures have responded to the tragedies of their own making by changing the definition of abortion. Thirteen abortion-hostile states have changed the definition of abortion since Dobbs, eleven of which have added at least one definitional exclusion, most commonly for ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, or molar pregnancy. States that have expanded abortion rights, on the other hand, have moved in the opposite direction, broadening their abortion definitions as they expand reproductive rights. The findings from this Article have a variety of normative implications. First, they demonstrate that 'abortion' is an ambiguous term that lacks a fixed meaning. Given that many abortion bans and the long-unenforced Comstock Act leave the term undefined, courts will need to consider canons of construction, context, and history to resolve the term's ambiguity. Second, the findings strongly support the conclusion that state abortion definitions and ban exceptions are unconstitutionally vague. This analysis cuts against a predominate antiabortion narrative that the laws are clear, yet doctors are willfully or unintentionally misinterpreting them. Finally, the findings underscore how Dobbs created an unworkable framework that moved the complicated experience of pregnancy from the medical to the legal domain, strengthening calls to overturn the decision., Part 1 of 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction 3 I. Background: Admission laboratory screening for asymptomatic COVID-19 has been utilized to mitigate healthcare-associated SARS-CoV-2 transmission. A better understanding of the impact of such testing across a variety of patient populations is needed. Methods: Beginning April 2020, every patient admitted within an academic healthcare system underwent SARS-CoV-2 PCR testing upon admission. Between April 20, 2020 through June 14, 2021, results were analyzed in asymptomatic patients across 4 inpatient facilities: a tertiary-care adult hospital, a free-standing pediatric hospital, a community-based hospital, and a behavioral health hospital. Positivity rates and the number needed to test (NNT) to identify 1 asymptomatic infected patient were calculated overall, by hospital type, by patient vaccination status, and by CDC-defined levels of community transmission. Weekly community incidence rates of COVID-19 for the system’s metropolitan service area (8 central Tennessee counties) were obtained from Tennessee Department of Health records. Weekly COVID-19 incidence rates per 100,000 people were calculated using US Census Bureau data. Using a national survey of hospital epidemiologists, a clinically meaningful NNT was identified (ie, 1 positive patient per 100 patients tested). A crude admission testing cost (covering testing supplies, reagents, and lab personnel costs) was obtained from operational data ($50 per test) to assess testing utility. Results: In total, 51,187 tests were collected during the study period with a positivity rate of 1.8%. No periods of low transmission were observed (Table 1). During high transmission periods, the NNT met the clinically relevant threshold in all populations. In addition, the NNT approached or met the 1:100 threshold for most locations during periods of less transmission, suggesting continued benefit even as infection rates decline. In all transmission periods, the NNT for non–fully vaccinated patients met the clinically meaningful threshold, in contrast to testing of fully vaccinated patients (Table 2). Discussion: Implementing an asymptomatic patient admission testing program can provide clinically relevant value based on the NNT, even during lower periods of transmission and in different patient populations. Limiting admission testing to non–fully vaccinated patients during periods of lower transmission may be a strategy to address cost and resource concerns around this practice. Further investigations into the impact of booster vaccination and newer SARS-CoV-2 variants on admission testing programs are also necessary. Although the impact of such testing on healthcare-associated COVID-19 among patients and healthcare workers could not be clearly determined, these data provide important information as facilities weigh the costs and benefits of such testing.

- Abstract
This action research project evaluated the impact of an intervention for reducing the inappropriate student behavior of primary school students. Participating were kindergartners in a large metropolitan area in northern Illinois. Inappropriate behaviors, such as physical aggression and using inappropriate words for self-expression, were documented by means of behavior checklists and surveys of teachers, students, and parents. The resulting 16-week intervention consisted of: (1) reading children's literature relating to children's problems and using puppets to dramatize the literature; and (2) implementing the Second Step Violence Prevention Program, a conflict-resolution and social-skills curriculum using lessons, stories and discussion, role playing, and take-home activities; and (3) implementing the Megaskills Program, a program to build motivation, confidence, effort, responsibility, initiative, teamwork, problem-solving, caring, perseverance, and common sense. Post-intervention assessments indicated that the number of hitting, pushing, and kicking incidents decreased by 80 percent and the number of physical contact incidents (touching, pinching, biting) and the use of inappropriate words decreased by 51 percent. The amount of time spent "telling the teacher" decreased as students improved their problem-solving skills and learned to solve problems independently. (Five appendices contain sample Second Step lesson plans and instructional materials. Contains 19 references.) (KB)

- Abstract
Mental health in Sweden is on the decline, with young people reporting the poorest outcomes. Reports show how schools fail in their preventive work when dealing with mental illness and that the burden of responsibility falls mainly on teachers who are forced to take initiative and thus are behind the few efforts that are made. The purpose of the study is to contribute with increased knowledge about how teachers are affected by their students’ struggle with mental health. Using an activity-pedagogical and social-cognitive theoretical approach and with qualitative content analysis, the results of five qualitative interviews with Swedish secondary school teachers are examined. The results of this study find that teachers are reporting a decline in mental health in their students and that they feel the weight of responsibility in dealing with this very complex issue. The results show that teachers tend to seek help and support via their teacher colleagues rather than the mental health professionals in the student health team. The interviews also showed that teachers in a lot of cases can tell early on when their students are experiencing symptoms of mental illness and in doing so take it upon themselves to adapt their planning and teaching to facilitate the student’s learning. Mental illness is however not considered when grading. Teachers are missing the resources to support students in mental illness and the burden of responsibility needs to be shared with professionals who are trained in and equipped with dealing with mental health.

- Abstract
(1) Background: Cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) is a protein produced by ovarian cancer cells that is used for patients’ monitoring. However, the best ways to analyze its decline and prognostic role are poorly quantified. (2) Methods: We leveraged individual patient data from the Gynecologic Cancer Intergroup (GCIG) meta-analysis (N = 5573) to compare different approaches summarizing the early trajectory of CA-125 before the prediction time (called the landmark time) at 3 or 6 months after treatment initiation in order to predict overall survival. These summaries included observed and estimated measures obtained by a linear mixed model (LMM). Their performances were evaluated by 10-fold cross-validation with the Brier score and the area under the ROC (AUC). (3) Results: The estimated value and the last observed value at 3 months were the best measures used to predict overall survival, with an AUC of 0.75 CI 95% [0.70; 0.80] at 24 and 36 months and 0.74 [0.69; 0.80] and 0.75 [0.69; 0.80] at 48 months, respectively, considering that CA-125 over 6 months did not improve the AUC, with 0.74 [0.68; 0.78] at 24 months and 0.71 [0.65; 0.76] at 36 and 48 months. (4) Conclusions: A 3-month surveillance provided reliable individual information on overall survival until 48 months for patients receiving first-line chemotherapy.

Multiplex immunofluorescence (mIF) imaging can provide comprehensive quantitative and spatial information for multiple immune markers for tumour immunoprofiling. However, application at scale to clinical trial samples sourced from multiple institutions is challenging due to pre‐analytical heterogeneity. This study reports an analytical approach to the largest multi‐parameter immunoprofiling study of clinical trial samples to date. We analysed 12,592 tissue microarray (TMA) spots from 3,545 colorectal cancers sourced from more than 240 institutions in two clinical trials (QUASAR 2 and SCOT) stained for CD4, CD8, CD20, CD68, FoxP3, pan‐cytokeratin, and DAPI by mIF. TMA slides were multi‐spectrally imaged and analysed by cell‐based and pixel‐based marker analysis. We developed an adaptive thresholding method to account for inter‐ and intra‐slide intensity variation in TMA analysis. Applying this method effectively ameliorated inter‐ and intra‐slide intensity variation improving the image analysis results compared with methods using a single global threshold. Correlation of CD8 data derived by our mIF analysis approach with single‐plex chromogenic immunohistochemistry CD8 data derived from subsequent sections indicates the validity of our method (Spearman's rank correlation coefficients ρ between 0.63 and 0.66, p ≪ 0.01) as compared with the current gold standard analysis approach. Evaluation of correlation between cell‐based and pixel‐based analysis results confirms equivalency (ρ > 0.8, p ≪ 0.01, except for CD20 in the epithelial region) of both analytical approaches. These data suggest that our adaptive thresholding approach can enable analysis of mIF‐stained clinical trial TMA datasets by digital pathology at scale for precision immunoprofiling. I. INTRODUCTION 808 II. THE COMPLEMENTARITY 811 PRINCIPLE OF THE ICC A. Article 17: Background 811 B. Article 17: Interpretation 814 C. Article 20: Background 816 and Interpretation D. OTP [...], The November 2016 peace agreement in Colombia is an historic achievement for the country after a fifty-year conflict. One crucial aspect of this deal is the Special Jurisdiction for Peace-the accountability framework established by the parties to prosecute violations of international criminal law. The situation in Colombia is still under a preliminary examination by the International Criminal Court (ICC). While the ICC is precluded from prosecuting individuals in Colombia for Rome Statute violations if the country is willing to genuinely prosecute them, the ICC makes the determination of whether or not the prosecutions are "genuine. " This Note analyzes the ICC's complementarity assessment to determine whether the Special Jurisdiction for Peace will be considered a "genuine" prosecution. It then considers the range of goals and accountability mechanisms that a country emerging from conflict may pursue in its transitional justice process and how those may differ from those of the ICC. This Note concludes that the Office of the Prosecutor of the ICC should consult with Colombian actors, provide clearer guidance on sentencing, and exercise its prosecutorial discretion to provide countries flexibility in pursuit of a transitional justice process that best fits the context of the transition and the goals of the country.

- Abstract

- Abstract

(237/300 words)Background: 20-30% of prisoners meet diagnostic criteria for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methylphenidate reduces ADHD symptoms but effects in prisoners are uncertain due to 16 comorbid mental health and substance use disorders. Aim: To estimate the efficacy of an Osmotic-Release-Oral-System methylphenidate (OROS-methylphenidate) in reducing ADHD symptoms in young adult prisoners with ADHD. Methods: An 8-week parallel arm, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial of OROS-methylphenidate versus placebo in male prisoners (aged 16-25) meeting DSM-5 criteria for ADHD. Primary outcome was ADHD symptoms at 8-weeks using the investigator rated Connors Adult ADHD Rating Scale (CAARS-O). Thirteen secondary outcome measures included emotional dysregulation, mind-wandering, violent attitudes, mental health symptoms, and prison officer and educational staff ratings of behaviour and aggression.Findings: Mean CAARS-O at 8 weeks in the OROS-methylphenidate arm was estimated to be reduced 26 by 0.57 points relative to the Placebo arm (95% CI: -2.41 to 3.56) and non-significant. The responder rate, defined as a 20% reduction in CAARS-O scores was 48.3% for the OROS-methylphenidate arm28 and 47.9% for the placebo arm. No statistically significant trial arm difference were detected for any of the secondary outcomes. Mean final titrated dose was 53.8 mg in the OROS-methylphenidate arm. Conclusions: ADHD symptoms did not respond to OROS-methylphenidate in young adult prisoners. The findings do not support routine treatment with OROS-methylphenidate in this population. Further research is needed to evaluate effects of higher average dosing and adherence to treatment, multimodal treatments, and preventative interventions in the community.Trial registration: EudraCT Number 2015-004271-78; ISRCTN16827947.

Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas Faced with a society that, while emerging linked to Science and Technology, also sinks into increasingly complex problems, Scientific and Technological Literacy (ACT) emerges as a training that enables the development of an adequate reading of this world, and of action on/in the same, through the reach of autonomy, communication and domain of individuals towards Science. Adopting the Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) construct as a theoretical guideline for teaching knowledge, we sought to understand the implications of a training activity in ACT, mediated by the Interdisciplinary Island of Rationality (IIR) methodology, based on teaching knowledge of undergraduates in chemistry. Data were collected through the application of questionnaires, interviews and materials produced by the undergraduates, and analyzed using Discursive Textual Analysis. Different teaching knowledge was identified regarding the domains of: curriculum, such as Interdisciplinary approach, Multidimensionality of phenomena, Territorialization; guidelines for science teaching, such as Apprehension of reality and Critical training; teaching strategies, such as Problematization and Call to Action; learning assessment, such as Reading the historical and real world; and students' understanding of science, such as the knowledge of Approaching reality. With this, it is pointed out the complexity of knowledge mobilized by the undergraduates throughout the methodology. The interactions between this knowledge carried out by the undergraduates were also described, in which it was observed that curriculum knowledge was central in their discussions and reflections, being articulated mainly with the guidelines for science teaching and instructional strategies, demonstrating sophistication in participants' knowledge base. Finally, evidence of the PCKs constructed by the undergraduates was characterized, which are directed towards the interdisciplinarity and contextualization of scientific knowledge, through the design of teaching approaches that place the chemical content at the heart of a concrete problem, raise different dimensions about a phenomenon, thus overcoming the limits of the disciplinary paradigm and dialoguing with the real life of the students. With that, inclined to promote interrelationships between the natural world and its social, environmental, economic aspects, among others, the undergraduates showed to be aligned with the ACT formulations and, thus, with the new demands that fall on the science teaching.

Introduction: This study reports on an assessment of mental health needs among Scotland's prison population which aimed to describe the scale and nature of need as well as identify opportunities to improve upon the services available. The project was commissioned by the Scottish Government to ensure that future changes to the services available to support the mental health and wellbeing of people in prison would be evidence-based and person-centered. Methods: A standardized approach to health needs assessments was employed. The study was comprised of four phases. In phase I a rapid literature review was undertaken to gather evidence on the prevalence of mental health needs experienced by people in prison in the UK. In Phase II a multi-method and multi- informant national mapping exercise involving providers to all Scottish prisons was undertaken to describe the mental health services available, and any gaps in these services, for people in and leaving prison. In Phase III prevalence estimates of severalmental health needs were derived for Scotland's current prison population, modeled froma national survey dataset of Scotland's community population using logistic regression. Finally in Phase IV, professional stakeholders and individuals with lived experience were interviewed to understand their experiences and insights on challenges to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of people in prison, and ideas on how these challenges could be overcome. Results: Evidence across the four phases of this needs assessment converged indicating that existing provision to support the mental health of people in prison in Scotland was considered inadequate to meet these needs. Barriers to effective partnership working for justice, health, social work and third sector providers appear to have led to inadequate and fragmented care, leaving prisoners without the support they need during and immediately following imprisonment. Conclusions: Joint and coordinated action from justice, health and social care, and third sector providers is needed to overcome enduring and structural challenges to supporting themental health of people in prison. Eighteen evidence- based recommendations were proposed to the Scottish Government relating to the high-level and operational-level changes required to adequately meet the prison population's mental health needs.
