The energy and spatial resolution and other characteristics of a combined detector permitting simultaneous detection of a large number of photons and hadrons has been studied in a 200 GeV/ c hadron beam at the CERN SPS. The detector consists of the GAMS-4000 spectrometer (4096 lead-glass cells) and a modular hadron calorimeter MHC-200 located behind it (240 total-absorption sandwich counters). A new method for adding the signals from the two calorimeters, which takes into account the difference in the development of hadron showers in photon and hadron calorimeters, has been developed. It permits substantial improvement of the energy resolution of the combined detector. The hadron coordinates are defined with a precision of several millimeters and the energy resolution is typical for steel-scintillator sandwiches with a wavelength-shifter readout. The effect of the gap between the photon and the hadron calorimeters has also been studied.

- Abstract
A hodoscope γ spectrometer comprising 1536 lead-glass cells is described. This detector allows the coordinates and the energies of a large number of gammas (up to ≈ 10) to be measured simultaneously and the masses (with an accuracy of 1%) and the momenta of particles decaying into photons to be determined. The use of fast processors allows selection of events by mass, energy and momentum transfer. The procedure for a fully automatic calibration of the spectrometer in an electron beam (with ∼ 1% accuracy) and for its control during long-term physical experiments is described. © 1986., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
The production of χ particles in the reaction π-p → χ + .has been studied near threshold. The measurements have been performed at the 70 GeV IHEP proton synchrotron using the hodoscope spectrometer GAMS-2000. The χ particles have been identified through their decay χ → J/ψ + γ, J/ψ → e+e-. In the region XF ≳0.4 the fraction of obsered J/ψ particles which is obtained via the decay of χ states is 0.44 ± 0.16. The χ longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions are similar to those obtained for J/ψ. The inclusive production cross section of χ particles (3P1 and 3P2 states) at 38 GeV/c is σXF>0 (π-p → χ + .) = (28±11) nb. © 1984., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
In a high-statistics experiment (200 events/nanobarn) performed at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator, a new dipion resonance has been observed in π-p collisions at 38 GeV/c momentum. The gamma-rays in reaction π-p → M0n, M0 → π0π0 → 4γ have been detected in the hodoscope spectrometer GAMS-2000. The new meson, r(2510), has a mass (2510±30) MeV/c2, a width (240±60) MeV/c2 and spin-parity J PC=6++. - Abstract
The possibilities offered by a novel experimental technique - the hodoscope hadron calorimeter - to determine coordinates of high-energy hadrons accurately by measuring the transverse spread of their associated showers have been studied. This accuracy is shown to improve with energy as (ln4E + q1E) 1 2/E and at E = 300 GeV it reaches σy = 3 mm. The shrinkage of the hadron shower and the growth of its central component with increasing energy have been measured. - Abstract
New data on the scalar G(1590) meson which decays into ηη have been obtained in an experiment at the CERN SPS. η pairs are detected with the electromagnetic calorimeter GAMS both through their decay into 4γ and into 8γ. ε{lunate}(1300), f(1270), f′(1525) as well as the spin-4 h(2030) mesons have also been observed to decay in the same mode. A structure has been observed at 2220 MeV in the mass spectrum of ηη′ systems produced by 38GeV/c and 100 GeV/c′ negative pions on protons. - Abstract
A 208 channel hodoscope γ spectrometer, the cells of which are made of lead-glass, is described. This detector makes it possible to measure simultaneously the coordinates (with an accuracy of 1.5 mm), and energy (to a few percent) of a large number of gammas and to reconstruct the mass and momentum of the particles decaying into gammas. - Abstract
A narrow meson which decays into ηη is observed in 38 GeV/c π-p collisions at large momentum transfer. The experiment has been performed at the Serpukhov accelerator with the GAMS-2000 spectrometer. The decay η′ → ηπ0π0 → 6γ has been measured accurately with the GAMS-2000 spectrometer in a high statistics experiment performed at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator. In an experiment performed at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator the rate decay η'(958) → 3π0, which violates isosoin conservation, has been observed. The six final decay gamma rays are detected in the hodoscope spectrometer GAMS-2000. The branching ratio of this decay is BR (η' → 3π0) = (1.6 ± 0.4) × 10-3. The partial widths of the η′(958) decays into 2γ, ωγ, 3π0 and ηπ0π0 have been measured with the GAMS-2000 spectrometer at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator. Upper limits for the η′ decays into 3γ, π0γγ, 2π0 and 4π0 have also been obtained. - Abstract
Data on the 4π0 decay mode of mesons have been obtained in a search for glueballs performed at the CERN SPS with the GAMS-4000 multiphoton spectrometer. A new tensor glueball candidate X(1810) appears as a clear peak in the 4π0 mass spectrum. The 4π0 decay of G(1590) is also observed. The measured value of BR(G→4π0)/BR(G→ηη)=0.8±0.3 further supports the glueball assignment of this scalar particle. The differences in width and in deposited energy between electromagnetic and hadron showers developed by 18.5 and 38 GeV/c pions and electrons in a combined hodoscope detector composed of a GAMS-type electromagnetic calorimeter and a modular hadron calorimeter allow to reject pions or electrons to a level ≪ 0.1% keeping a detection efficiency larger than 90% when the other particle is selected. The hadron calorimeter helps to efficiently reject background in studies of multiphoton decays of neutral mesons with GAMS. © 1989., SCOPUS: le.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
The energy and spatial resolution of a combined detector consisting of the Cherenkov photon calorimeter GAMS-2000 and the modular hadron calorimeter MHC-100 has been studied at 18.5 and 38 GeV incident pion energies at the IHEP accelerator. The energy resolution of the combined setup is substantially improved by applying a correction based on the analysis of the lateral development of hadron showers in GAMS and MHC. It is shown that the parameters of the correction depend only weakly on the hadron energy. The influence of the gap between both photon and hadron calorimeters on the combined detector characteristics is of less importance with increasing energy. © 1988., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

A data acquisition system with high amplitude resolution (12 bits), high speed conversion (clock frequency 50 MHz), used in an experiment with a large number of counters (∼ 4200) is described. - Abstract
A large cellular hadron calorimeter consisting of independent modular total aborption counters (iron-scintillator sandwiches) is described. Scintillation light is collected using light guides with a wavelength shifter. The characteristics of the detector have been studied in a 200 GeV hadron beam. The {Mathematical expression} charge exchange differential cross-section has been measured at 30 GeV/c with high statistical accuracy and high angular resolution. A total absorption hodoscope calorimeter is described. It allows the simultaneous measurement of the energy of the incident hadrons as well as their coordinates with a precision of 1 cm for hadron energies of tens of GeV and higher.
