El Batará de Cocha (Thamnophilus preacox) es una especie cuya distribución geográfica se encuentra registrada al noreste de Ecuador (este del río Napo) y al sur de la Amazonía colombiana (río Caucayá, río Caquetá y Brazuelo del Caucayá, noreste de Puerto Legizamo, a menos de 3 km de la frontera con Perú) y en la zona fronteriza entre Ecuador y Colombia. Aunque su presencia era esperada en el Perú, no se contaba con registros documentados de la especie. Inesperadamente, los registros aquí reportados no provienen de la cuenca alta del Napo, en la frontera entre Perú y Ecuador, sino de la localidad de Bretaña, ubicada en la zona de amortiguamiento de la Reserva Nacional Pacaya Samiria, aproximadamente a 545 km al sur de los registros de la especie cerca de la frontera entre Perú y Ecuador. En esta nota presentamos evidencias fotográficas de T. praecox en el departamento Loreto, confirmando así el primer registro documentado para esta especie y su presencia en Perú.

El Vuelvepiedras Rojizo (Arenaria interpres) es una migrante boreal bastante común en playas arenosas y zonas rocosas, en la costa del Perú. Documentamos la presencia de A. interpres en el departamento Loreto, en la Amazonía de Perú, con lo cual se amplía su registro documentado en Perú. Adicionalmente, se proporciona algunos datos sobre su comportamiento, número de individuos y periodo de residencia.

El Chirigüe Azafranado (Sicalis flaveola) es una especie bastante común en la parte Noroeste, costa del Perú y frecuente en algunas ciudades. Documentamos la presencia de S. flaveola en el departamento Loreto, con lo cual se amplía su distribución en Perú, adicionalmente se proporciona algunos datos sobre su comportamiento, número de individuos y residencia.

La Cigüeña Maguari (Ciconia maguari) se encuentra considerada en Perú como divagante, con avistamientos especialmente en la parte sureste del país. Documentamos la presencia de C. maguari en el departamento de Loreto ampliando su distribución en Perú y proporcionamos algunos datos sobre su permanencia, comportamiento y número de individuos.

El Corocoro Escarlata (Eudocimus ruber) está considerado para el Perú como una especie divagante, errante o ambas; su avistamiento ocurre ocasionalmente y no es parte de la avifauna habitual. En esta nota documentamos la presencia de Eudocimus ruber en Loreto, y se actualiza su ocurrencia en el Perú. Adicionalmente confirmamos que algunas especies de aves aparecen en la zona aledaña a la ciudad de Iquitos u otras áreas de Loreto como consecuencia de los nuevos espacios abiertos que son generados por la actividad antropogénica.

Since 2000, collaborative and multidisciplinary field inventories have helped quadruple park coverage in Peru’s richest region., Meeting international commitments to protect 17% of terrestrial ecosystems worldwide will require >3 million square kilometers of new protected areas and strategies to create those areas in a way that respects local communities and land use. In 2000–2016, biological and social scientists worked to increase the protected proportion of Peru’s largest department via 14 interdisciplinary inventories covering >9 million hectares of this megadiverse corner of the Amazon basin. In each landscape, the strategy was the same: convene diverse partners, identify biological and sociocultural assets, document residents’ use of natural resources, and tailor the findings to the needs of decision-makers. Nine of the 14 landscapes have since been protected (5.7 million hectares of new protected areas), contributing to a quadrupling of conservation coverage in Loreto (from 6 to 23%). We outline the methods and enabling conditions most crucial for successfully applying similar campaigns elsewhere on Earth.

White-sand forests are patchily distributed ecosystems covering just 5% of Amazonia that host many specialist species of birds not found elsewhere, and these forests are threatened due to their small size and human exploitation of sand for construction projects. As a result, many species of birds that area white-sand specialists are at risk of extinction, and immediate conservation action is paramount for their survival. Our objective was to evaluate current survey methods and determine the relative effect of the size of patches these forests on the presence or absence of white-sand specialist. Using point counts and autonomous recorders, we surveyed avian assemblages occupying patches of white-sand forest in the Peruvian Amazon in April 2018. Overall, we detected 126 species, including 21 white-sand forest specialists. We found that autonomous recorders detected significantly more species of birds per survey point than point counts. We also found a negative relationship between avian species richness and distance from the edge of patches of white-sand forest, but a significant, positive relationship when only counting white-sand specialists. While autonomous recorders detected more overall species, point counts were more effective for detecting canopy-dwelling passerines. Therefore, we recommend that inventories and surveys for rare and patchily distributed species in the tropics use a mixed-methods survey technique of bioacoustics and visual observations. Finally, conserving large, continuous patches of white-sand forest may increase survival likelihood for white-sand specialists, but future studies determining habitat occupancy should further investigate this relationship.

Crypturellus duidae (Tinamidae) is a poor-soil specialist with isolated populations in Amazonia, and is considered restricted to white-sand forest habitats. We report the first record of C. duidae in a peatland forest in northern Peru, in the Putumayo River basin. Our record extends the known distribution of C. duidae between two disjoint areas of occurrence in Peru and Colombia, and shows its presence in peatland forest, another forest type on nutrient-poor soils. Additionally, we report the presence of other poor-soil specialist bird species that were previously registered in peatlands. Together with the new record of C. duidae, these bird records provide evidence of the diversity of poor-soil specialists in peatland forests.
