19. Micro- and macro-habitat selection of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, post-smolts in relation to marine environmental cues.

Abstract

Atlantic salmon is an economically and culturally important species. The species encounters several natural and man-made threats during its migration between fresh water and the ocean, which in combination may explain its ongoing decline. With the aim to better understand whether post-smolt behaviour is influenced by physical oceanographic conditions, the migratory behaviour of 173 post-smolts in a high-latitude Norwegian fjord was investigated, combining acoustic telemetry with site- and time-specific environmental variables from an oceanographic model. Most post-smolts (94%) performed a unidirectional migration out the fjord. Progression rates were relatively high (0.42–2.41 km h−1; 0.84–3.78 BL s−1) and increased with distance from the river. While post-smolts had an affinity for lower salinities in the inner fjord, statistical models failed to detect any significant relationship between the small-scale (within arrays) migratory behaviour and salinity, temperature, or coastal surface currents within the fjord. In the outer part, the post-smolts predominantly exited the fjord system through the strait with the highest surface salinities and lowest temperatures, independently of the current direction. Our findings indicate that the macro- habitat selection of the Atlantic salmon post-smolts was influenced by environmental factors: the post-smolts directed their migration towards "ocean cues." Abstract

The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation has initiated a continuous review of new, peer-reviewed, published cardiopulmonary resuscitation science. This is the third annual summary of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care Science With Treatment Recommendations. It addresses the most recent published resuscitation evidence reviewed by International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation Task Force science experts. This summary addresses the role of cardiac arrest centers and dispatcher-assisted cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the role of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation in adults and children, vasopressors in adults, advanced airway interventions in adults and children, targeted temperature management in children after cardiac arrest, initial oxygen concentration during resuscitation of newborns, and interventions for presyncope by first aid providers. Members from 6 International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation task forces have assessed, discussed, and debated the certainty of the evidence on the basis of the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation criteria, and their statements include consensus treatment recommendations. Insights into the deliberations of the task forces are provided in the Justification and Evidence to Decision Framework Highlights sections. The task forces also listed priority knowledge gaps for further research.

Abstract

Friction-generated heat and the subsequent thermal evolution control fault material properties and thus strength during the earthquake cycle. We document evidence for transient, nanoscale fault rheology on a high-gloss, light-reflective hematite fault mirror (FM). The FM cuts specularite with minor quartz from the Pleistocene El Laco Fe-ore deposit, northern Chile. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy data reveal that the FM volume comprises a <50-μm-thick zone of polygonal hematite nanocrystals with spherical silica inclusions, rhombohedral twins, no shape or crystallographic preferred orientation, decreasing grain size away from the FM surface, and FM surface magnetite nanoparticles and Fe²+ suboxides. Sub--5-nm-thick silica films encase hematite grains and connect to amorphous interstitial silica. Observations imply that coseismic shear heating (temperature >1000 °C) generated transiently amorphous, intermixed but immiscible, and rheologically weak Fe-oxide and silica. Hematite regrowth in a fault-perpendicular thermal gradient, sintering, twinning, and a topographic network of nanometer-scale ridges from crystals interlocking across the FM surface collectively restrengthened fault material. Results reveal how temperature-induced weakening preconditions fault healing. Nanoscale transformations may promote subsequent strain delocalization and development of off-fault damage. Abstract

JD Lasica’s 2003 vision of the ‘random acts of journalism’ committed by citizen journalists was highly influential during the heyday of ‘Web 2.0’ in the first years of the new millennium, but in spite of a number of noted successes for citizen and alternative news organisations in breaking and influencing stories, a broader trend of public participation in journalistic activities never materialised. Active participation in citizen journalism remained, for the most part, the domain of what Stephen Coleman has called ‘political junkies’; citizen journalism afforded these participants a louder voice than had been available to them before the advent of online self-publishing functionality, but did not substantially alter the demographics of such quasi-journalistic engagement. However, the second wave of participative Web technologies – represented by modern social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter – has further lowered the barriers to entry into citizen-journalistic activities in online environments. Social media offer an opportunity for a greater range of participants to participate in the distribution and discussion of news stories and political commentary by simplifying the sharing and commenting on issues and events to a few clicks, thereby bridging the gap between everyday talk about news and politics in offline and online social circles and more formal journalistic activities; the ubiquity of mobile devices as points of access to social media further serves to make such participation possible from virtually anywhere, at any time. Further, these truly random, casual acts of engagement with journalistic content are aggregated and curated by a mixture of technological filters and human agency into public streams of news and discussion which provide detailed and up-to-date insights into current events and debates. This chapter will trace the emergence of this new form of citizen journalism and explore its implications for the news industry.

35. A Survey to Determine Decision-Making Styles of Working Paramedics and Student Paramedics.

Abstract

Objective: Two major processes underlie human decision-making: experiential (intuitive) and rational (conscious) thinking. The predominant thinking process used by working paramedics and student paramedics to make clinical decisions is unknown. Methods: A survey was administered to ground ambulance paramedics and to primary care paramedic students. The survey included demographic questions and the Rational Experiential Inventory-40, a validated psychometric tool involving 40 questions. Twenty questions evaluated each thinking style: 10 assessed preference and 10 assessed ability to use that style. Responses were provided on a five-point Likert scale, with higher scores indicating higher affinity for the style in question. Analysis included both descriptive statistics and t tests to evaluate differences in thinking style. Results: The response rate was 88.4% (1172/1326). Paramedics (n = 904) had a median age of 36 years (IQR 29-42) and most were male (69.5%) and primary or advanced care paramedics (PCP = 55.5%; ACP = 32.5%). Paramedic students (n = 268) had a median age of 23 years (IQR 21-26), most were male (63.1%) and had completed high school (31.7%) or an undergraduate degree (25.4%) prior to paramedic training. Both groups scored their ability to use and favourability toward rational thinking significantly higher than experiential thinking. The mean score for rational thinking was 3.86/5 among paramedics and 3.97/5 among paramedic students (p<0.001). The mean score for experiential thinking was 3.41/5 among paramedics and 3.35/5 among paramedic students (p = 0.06). Conclusion: Working paramedics and student paramedics prefer and perceive that they have the ability to use rational over experiential thinking. This information adds to our current knowledge on paramedic decision-making and is potentially important for developing continuing education and clinical support tools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A polarized IR scattering facility that measures all elements of the Mueller matrix was built here at the U.S. Army Chemical Research, Development and Engineering Center (CRDEC) for remote detection of contaminants (analytes) spread on natural and manufactured surfaces (background scattering interferent). The ellipsometer is a two-modulator design that when interfaced to a mathematical algorithm can be trained to emit beam CO2 laser energies at incident angles that best contrast various analyte target backscattering signatures from background signatures. For a probable detection event, sets of Mueller matrices are measured at beam energies coinciding with resonant IR absorptions by the analyte and at incident angle where backscattering by that analyte surface is strong. Identification of the contaminant(s) in situ is determined by another algorithm that operates on a vector whose N is equal or more than 16 components are the independent Mueller elements measured at the susceptible beam energy/angle parameters. Abstract

This report computes the vibrational frequencies of seven amines. Experimental data are available for four of these molecules: trimethylamine, diethylmethylamine, bis(2-chloroethyl)methylamine, and triethylamine. The ratios are determined between the experimental and the computed frequencies of these molecules. The ratios are then used to derive a set of effective correction factors for the various vibrational modes. The vibrational frequencies are computed for three other tertiary amines: tris(chloromethyl) amine, tris(2- chloroethyl)amine (HN3), and bis(2-chloroethyl) ethylamine (HN1). The computed frequencies, the corresponding intensities, and the corrected frequencies are reported here.
