En los últimos años se está explorando el uso y adopción de tecnologías innovadoras en el sector de la educación y aprendizaje. Asimismo, modelos de educación y docencia online están ganando protagonismo, ya sea debido a una implantación voluntaria o forzosa de programas de educación remota y/o híbrida. Este auge ha hecho palpable las limitaciones de los sistemas de comunicaciones audiovisuales 2D, como la videoconferencia, en varios sentidos: confort, calidad de interacción, conciencia situacional, (co-)presencia, etc. Este trabajo introduce un nuevo medio de comunicación, interacción y colaboración que promete ser un candidato idóneo para superar estas limitaciones haciendo uso de tecnologías inmersivas: la Realidad Virtual (RV) Social. En primer lugar, se aportará una revisión de evidencias científicas recientes que vislumbran y demuestran potenciales beneficios de este medio para diferentes casos de uso de interés, en comparación al uso de sistemas de videoconferencia 2D tradicionales. Asimismo, se destacarán los potenciales beneficios que puede aportar la disponibilidad de representaciones holográficas 3D de los usuarios en comparación al uso de avatares sintéticos (y por tanto, poco realistas) en entornos de RV Social. A continuación, se destacarán una serie de retos a nivel tecnológico y de experiencia de usuario a superar con tal de conseguir una implantación efectiva y masiva de este nuevo medio de comunicación. Next-generation IoT systems will allow sustainable performance in long-term monitoring systems. This sustainability concept applies to soundscape description, as it allows monitoring in urban environments. In this work, the implementation of psycho-acoustic annoyance models in a 5G-enabled IoT system is proposed, applying two edge-computing approaches. A modified Zwicker’s model is adopted in this research, introducing a term that takes into account the tonal component of the captured sound. These implementations have been validated in a measurement campaign where several IoT devices have been deployed to evaluate different sound environments of a university campus. Then, the analysis of the sound-quality metrics is conducted in a different location, showing that if tonality is present in a noisy environment, it results in greater subjective annoyance. Moreover, the Just-Noticeable Difference of these results is derived from Zwicker’s psycho-acoustic annoyance to establish a limitation for this metric.

The emergence of low cost Ultra Wide Band (UWB) transceivers has enabled the implementation of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) based on this communication technology. These networks are composed of distributed autonomous low cost nodes (also known as motes) with their own processing unit, memory and communications. Usually these nodes are power-limited and due to the poor performance and quality of their clocks, time synchronization is in the order of milliseconds and in some specific scenarios till microseconds. The integration of commercial UWB transceivers in these nodes can improve the synchronization accuracy. In particular, we focus on WSN nodes based on off-the-shelf commercial products and commodity hardware. In this paper we analyze step by step, from a practical and experimental point of view, the different elements involved in the time synchronization using UWB technology on WSN with static nodes. From our experimental results, with timestamps captured during the packet exchanges, we analyze and discuss the application of different communication schemes and simple statistical methods (in order to be run in WSN nodes). The results obtained with timestamps captured at the UWB transceivers and by using linear regression show that the lowest time synchronization error achieved between two nodes is 0.14 ns. Employing the same setup and performing the synchronization with the timestamps captured internally at the microcontrollers of the nodes, the error rises to 31 ns, due to the higher time period of the microcontrollers’ timers and the inaccuracies that affect the acquisition of the timestamps. Nevertheless, the synchronization of the microcontrollers’ clocks allows the setting up of a common time reference at the network nodes, enabling the implementation of applications with tight synchronization requirements, such as collaborative beamforming and ranging.

Preserving the Intangible Cultural Sound Heritage of Humanity is a crucial aspect of safeguarding a people’s culture and history. By employing objective acoustic and psychoacoustic parameters, we can effectively analyze and characterize these auditory environments based on objective, aesthetic, and emotional criteria. The ISO 12913 standard governs the depiction of soundscapes, while the evaluation of outdoor sites involves conducting sound-walks. This study focuses on assessing different soundscapes observed during festivities in Spain as sound walk (dynamic) and as in fireworks (static). The festivities assessed were: "Fallas" in Valencia, Sanfermines in Pamplona, "Festa de la Mare de Deu" in Algemesi, and "Moros y Cristianos" in Villena. To evaluate these soundscapes, we captured ambient sound recordings while traversing through or staying between the festival crowds. Subsequently, we employed various psychoacoustic metrics, such as loudness, sharpness, roughness, fluctuation stress, and tonality, and analyzed them using Zwicker models. Additionally, we conducted a subjective survey to compare the subjective responses with the psychoacoustic metrics obtained.

This study analyses the detection efficiency of the Worldwide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) of sensors over Spain, a comparison is made with the Meteorological Spanish Agency (AEMET) Lightning Detection Network. The WWLLN operates a planetary distributed network of Very Low Frequency (VLF) antennas which detect lightning VLF signals around the Earth. Very high currents from lightning strokes radiate strong VLF signals in the band 6-22 kHz, which are detected up to 10,000 km, therefore WWLLN receiving sensors can be sparsely spaced. However the detection capability of VLF signals depends on the environment, and clean areas with a good ground and no metal parts around must be selected for proper reception. For the area of Spain and Portugal we had two WWLLN sensors in 2012, and three sensors later on for the data of 2020, 2021 and 2022. The sensors in Iberian Peninsula are at a distance of around 760 km; that is very close in comparison with other WWLLN sensors in the Earth which are around 5.000-15.000 km. The WWLLN sensors send the timing of the detection to the central sensor where the location of the lightning is determined with an improved algorithm when a mini-mum of 5 sensors detect the VLF signal. We show that detection efficiency was excellent and consistent with previous studies. Lightning location data from 1st January 2012 to 30st April 2012 from AEMET was used to analyze time and space shared events with the WWLLN network with 0.5s time difference and 20 km distance. The results improved in 2020, 2021 and 2022. More than 40,000 lightning strikes were analyzed in the present work, and we found a detection efficiency > 38%.

Carrier removal has been typically associated with wrap reduction, and its application has strongly been recommended as a previous step to phase unwrapping. In general, the carrier signal contributes to an increase of the number of wraps, and its removal leads to a reduction of the number of phase inconsistencies, having a positive impact on the subsequent unwrapping operation. In this paper, we show that phase wrap reduction can be better tackled by other alternative and more effective methods that exploit local information and attempt to also remove the signal component associated with the object’s surface. The results are analyzed on a series of real fringe patterns and confirm the better performance of the proposed method, which leads to signals with a lesser number of wraps than by just removing the carrier.

Traffic surveillance is an important issue for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) that helps detect incidents automatically, such as wrong-way drivers, still-standing vehicles and jams. Sometimes these systems require a fast and short-term deployment of video cameras. In these cases, ad-hoc networks could be a low-cost and feasible option, but they have poor performance for video delivery. Thus, we propose a smart live video adaptive streaming technique in order to transport video streams from the cameras to the external road traffic monitoring servers. To achieve this goal, these networks need a thorough study in order to analyze video quality under their inherent constraints, given by their specific topologies (once deployed), video streaming protocol, nodes’ performance and routing protocols. From our results both in simulated and real scenarios, we demonstrate the feasibility of our proposal in these specific scenarios, validated with several performance metrics in terms of Quality of Service and video quality.

Urban parks constitute one of the main leisure areas, especially for the most vulnerable people in our society, children, and the elderly. Contact with soils can pose a health risk. Microbiological testing is a key aspect in determining whether they are suitable for public use. The aim of this work is to map the spatial distribution of potential dangerous Enterobacteria but also bioremediation useful (lipase producers) isolates from soils in an urban park in the area of Valencia (Spain). To this end, our team has collected 25 samples of soil and isolated 500 microorganisms, using a mobile application to collect information of the soil samples (i.e. soil features, temperature, humidity, etc.) with geolocation. A combined protocol including matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and 16S rDNA sequencing PCR has been established to characterize the isolates. The results have been processed using spatial statistical techniques (using Kriging method), taking into account the number of isolated strains, also proving the reactivity against standard pathogenic bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella, Pseudomonas and Staphylococcus aureus), and have increased the number of samples (to 896 samples) by interpolating spatially each parameter with this statistical method. The combined use of methods from biology and computer science allows the quality of the soil in urban parks to be predicted in an agile way, which can generate confidence in its use by citizens.

[ES] La innovación educativa es un proceso que se extiende más allá de un curso académico. En su desarrollo se distinguen las etapas de planificación, implementación, evaluación y realimentación, para identificar aspectos susceptibles de mejora. En esta contribución presentamos el trabajo desarrollado en los dos últimos cursos en la asignatura Teoría de la Comunicación (materia de Comunicaciones Digitales), Grado en Ingeniería Telemática, de la Universitat de València. Concretamente, se incorporan dispositivos de radio definida por software en los laboratorios como herramienta para conseguir unas prácticas más realistas. El artículo describe el proceso de adaptación de una sesión de laboratorio, que inicialmente fue desarrollada por un grupo piloto reducido en el curso 2018-2019, para un grupo experimental de laboratorio en el curso 2019-2020. Para evaluar el impacto de la innovación se cuantifica la implicación del alumnado, comparando los resultados del grupo experimental con respecto a dos grupos de control que han continuado con las sesiones simuladas estándar. Los resultados indican que el impacto ha sido positivo en la capacidad de los estudiantes para afrontar nuevos retos y en su percepción de la relevancia de las actividades que realizan, aunque esta mejora no se refleje en su capacidad de centrarse en ellas., [EN] Educational innovation is a process that extends beyond an academic year. In its development, the stages of planning, implementation, evaluation and feedback are distinguished in order to identify aspects that could be improved. In this contribution, we present the work developed over the last two years in the subject Communication Theory (Digital Communications), Degree in Telematic Engineering, from the University of Valencia. Specifically, software defined radio devices have been incorporated in the laboratories as a tool to bring students closer to more realistic practices. The paper describes the adaptation process of a laboratory session, which was initially developed by a small pilot group in the academic year 2018-2019, for an experimental laboratory group in the academic year 2019-2020. In order to evaluate the impact of the innovation, the involvement of the students is quantified, comparing the results of the experimental group with two control groups that have continued with the standard simulated sessions. The results indicate that the impact has been positive on the students’ ability to face new challenges and on their perception of the relevance of the activities they carry out, although this improvement is not reflected in their ability to focus on them.

The world is becoming wireless. In contrast with wired technologies, wireless technologies are widespread in several sectors and they are more and more present in many aspects of life. Wireless includes any technologies which uses no wire. They can be applied for specific applications and have been standardized. (Bluetooth or IEEE 802.15.1, WiFi or IEEE 802.11, ZigBee or IEEE 802.15.4, RFID standardized as ISO 18000, etc). One of the most valuable reasons for the growth of wireless technologies for communications is the requirements for the mobility of modern applications. These requirements, and also security, make wireless technologies one of the best candidates for these applications and for establishing secure communications in traffic vehicular environments, so for vehicle to vehicle (V2V) as well as for vehicle to infrastructure (V2I). Electronic Registration and Identification (ERI) of vehicles is a way to identify a vehicle univocally by means of some kind of wireless technology for communication. This protocol allows a wide range of interesting ITS applications, which involves secure identification of vehicles using symmetrical and asymmetrical techniques. These applications could be applied in private and public services (tolling systems, access to parking lots, information services, etc ). Figure 1 shows a schema which explains the whole architecture in order to understand how ERI standards are settled within an AVI/AEI architecture proposed in ISO 14814. A specific application programming interface of wireless communications developed for Electronic Registration of Vehicles is explained in this chapter as an example of application of this technology. The philosophy of this concept is gathered in the ISO/TS 24534 and ISO/TS 24535 standards, also named ERI standards. This family of standards establishes the architecture of reference to Vehicle Identification independently of the physical technology used, so they do not specify a particular wireless technology to develop any kind of system application (the standard just suggests DSRC technology for deployment of the protocol). In other terms, these standards are linked to the Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI/AEI) family of standards, which are ISO 14814 to 14816. This family of standards is the framework in which ERI is included. Taking into account what is explained in the standards, ERI protocol allows establishing secure communications between the road infrastructure and the moving vehicles. This is an issue in which several Traffic administrations have been interested in. In this sense

In recent years, Wireless Acoustic Sensor Networks (WASN) have been widely applied to different acoustic fields in outdoor and indoor environments. Most of these applications are oriented to locate or identify sources and measure specific features of the environment involved. In this paper, we study the application of a WASN for room acoustic measurements. To evaluate the acoustic characteristics, a set of Raspberry Pi 3 (RPi) has been used. One is used to play different acoustic signals and four are used to record at different points in the room simultaneously. The signals are sent wirelessly to a computer connected to a server, where using MATLAB we calculate both the impulse response (IR), and different acoustic parameters, such as the Speech Intelligibility Index (SII). In this way, the evaluation of room acoustic parameters with asynchronous IR measurements two different applications has been explored. Finally, the network features have been evaluated to assess the effectiveness of this system.

[EN] Devices based on software defined radio have been used in the last 6 years as motivating elements in the laboratory practices of digital communications courses at the Degree in Telematics Engineering of the University of Valencia. However, the development of these practices requires giving access to some hardware devices that are physically located in the laboratories of the School of Engineering. In this contribution, taking into account the current situation of hybrid learning and a possible transition to remote learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a system that allows the remote interaction with the software defined radio devices is proposed. This remote access system, in addition to allowing these devices to be used in laboratory practices even in a remote learning context, would allow students to access them outside laboratory practice hours. The results obtained in the Digital Communications Theory course demonstrate the high potential for motivation and increased academic involvement provided by the use of these devices, especially in contexts with low academic involvement, such as the 2020-2021 academic year., [ES] Los dispositivos de radio definida por software se han utilizado en los últimos 6 años como elementos dinamizadores de las prácticas de laboratorio en las asignaturas de la materia de comunicaciones digitales del Grado en Ingeniería Telemática de la Universitat de València. Sin embargo, el desarrollo de estas prácticas requiere el acceso a unos dispositivos hardware que están localizados físicamente en los laboratorios de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería. En esta contribución, atendiendo a la actual situación de docencia semipresencial y de un posible paso a docencia en línea debido a la pandemia de COVID-19, se plantea establecer un sistema que permita la interacción remota con los dispositivos de radio definida por software. Este sistema de acceso remoto, además de permitir que se sigan utilizando estos dispositivos en las prácticas de laboratorio aún en un contexto de docencia en línea, permitiría el acceso del alumnado a ellos fuera del horario de prácticas de laboratorio. In educational context, a source of nuisance for students is carbon dioxide ($$CO_2$$ C O 2 ) concentration due to closed rooms and lack of ventilation or circulatory air. Also, in the pandemic context, ventilation in indoor environments has been proven as a good tool to control the COVID-19 infections. In this work, it is presented a low cost IoT-based open-hardware and open-software monitoring system to control ventilation, by measuring carbon dioxide ($$CO_2$$ C O 2 ), temperature and relative humidity. This system provides also support for automatic updating, auto-self calibration and adds some Cloud and Edge offloading of computational features for mapping functionalities. From the tests carried out, it is observed a good performance in terms of functionality, battery durability, compared to other measuring devices, more expensive than our proposal.

Las comunicaciones digitales se enseñan tradicionalmente en sesiones de laboratorio desde un punto de vista teórico, utilizando plataformas de simulación. Sin embargo, el sistema de Acreditación Académica incluye la dimensión de "lo que se espera que los estudiantes sean capaces de hacer", lo que plantea la necesidad de disminuir la brecha entre las sesiones de laboratorio simuladas y un enfoque más práctico y realista. En este trabajo, proponemos una metodología para mejorar el aprendizaje de los aspectos prácticos relacionados con los cursos de Comunicaciones Digitales, así como para aumentar la motivación de los estudiantes, mediante el uso de dispositivos de radio definida por software de bajo coste. Esta metodología se ha aplicado en el Grado en Ingeniería Telemática de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería de la Universidad de Valencia, España. Con el objetivo de mejorar el compromiso de los estudiantes de máster y de grado, se ha implementado una metodología de aprendizaje basado en proyectos. En el trabajo se describe la metodología, se describen varias actividades de laboratorio basadas en el estándar 802.11 y se dan recomendaciones para la implementación de esta metodología. UV-SFPIE PID-1353656 Digital Communications have been traditionally taught in laboratory sessions from a theoretical point of view, using simulation platforms. However, current Academic Accreditation includes the dimension of “what students are expected to be able to do”, which poses the need of decreasing the gap between standard simulated laboratory sessions and more practical and realistic approaches. In this paper, we propose a methodology to enhance the learning of practical aspects related to Digital Communications courses, as well as increasing the student’s engagement, via the use of low-cost software defined radio devices. This methodology has been applied in the Degree in Telematics Engineering at the School of Engineering from the University of Valencia, Spain. With the aim of improving the engagement of both master and undergraduate students, a project based learning methodology has been implemented. In the paper, the methodology is described, several laboratory activities based on the 802.11 standard are presented, and recommendations for practice are given.

Current mobile service providers are offering Gigabit Internet access over LTE-Advanced networks. Traditional services, such as live video streaming, over wired networks are feasible on these networks. However different aspects should be taken into account due to the fast changing network conditions as well as the constrained resources of the mobile phones, in order to provide a good subjective video quality in terms of Mean Opinion Score (MOS). Our goal is to estimate and predict this subjective metric without information or reference from the original video, known as Non Reference approach. This approach is important for the Service Provider from a practical point of view, because it can keep the customer satisfaction at good levels. We analyze different estimation techniques running over a set of monitored variables throughout the whole steaming system, from the streaming server to the mobile phone. We have gathered variables related to bit stream, basic video quality metrics as well as Quality of Services variables. These variables are used to estimate MOS in a reliable and robust way. We compare three techniques such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Factor Analysis (FA) and Multinomial Linear Regression, at different time scales and with Full Reference and Non Reference approaches. We carry out a performance evaluation of these techniques, concluding that the behavior of MOS estimation based on FA is more accurate, unless we had a lossless scenario related to Guaranteed Bit Rate services, where ANN performs better. The subjective video quality has been evaluated through surveys. Finally, we evaluate the accuracy of the estimated MOS against well known publicly available video quality algorithms following the recommendations given by Video Quality Experts Group (VQEG).

We present experimental results of soft errors produced by proton and neutron irradiation of minimum-size six-transistors (6T) and eight-transistors (8T) bit-cells SRAM memories produced with 65 nm CMOS technology using an 18 MeV proton beam and a neutron beam of 4.3–8.5 MeV. All experiments have been carried out at the National Center of Accelerators (CNA) in Seville, Spain. Similar soft error rate levels have been observed for both cell designs despite the larger area occupied by the 8T cells, although the trend for multiple events has been higher in 6T., This work has been supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO/FEDER) under projects CICYT-TEC2011-25017 and TEC2014-52878-R.

Lightning and thunder are some of the most violent natural phenomena. They generate a great deal of expenditure and economic loss, especially when they strike in cities. The identification of the concrete geographic area where they strike is of critical importance for emergency services in order to enhance their effectiveness by doing an intensive coverage of the affected area. To achieve this purpose at the city scale, this paper proposes the design, prototype, and validation of a distributed network of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The IoT devices are empowered with lightning detection capabilities and are synchronized with the other devices in the sensor network. All of them cooperate within a network that is able to locate different events thanks to a trilateration algorithm implemented in a big data environment. The designed low-cost lightning detection system is based on the AS3935 sensor. This system alone has a limited range of effective detection, but when it is embedded in an IoT mesh network, the accuracy and performance are increased. A fully operational IoT network was deployed, and a functional validation and empirical measurements are provided.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network widely used with the purpose of connecting almost everything, everywhere to the Internet. To cope with this goal, low cost nodes are being used, otherwise, it would be very expensive to expand so fast. These networks are set up with small distributed devices (nodes) that have a power supply, processing unit, memory, sensors, and wireless communications. In the market, we can find different alternatives for these devices, such as small board computers (SBCs), e.g., Raspberry Pi (RPi)), with different features. Usually these devices run a coarse version of a Linux operating system. Nevertheless, there are many scenarios that require enhanced computational power that these nodes alone are unable to provide. In this context, we need to introduce a kind of collaboration among the devices to overcome their constraints. We based our solution in a combination of clustering techniques (building a mesh network using their wireless capabilities), at the same time we try to orchestrate the resources in order to improve their processing capabilities in an elastic computing fashion. This paradigm is called fog computing on IoT. We propose in this paper the use of cloud computing technologies, such as Linux containers, based on Docker, and a container orchestration platform (COP) to run on the top of a cluster of these nodes, but adapted to the fog computing paradigm. Notice that these technologies are open source and developed for Linux operating system. As an example, in our results we show an IoT application for soundscape monitoring as a proof of concept that it will allow us to compare different alternatives in its design and implementation, in particular, with regard to the COP selection, between Docker Swarm and Kubernetes. We conclude that using and combining these techniques, we can improve the overall computation capabilities of these IoT nodes within a fog computing paradigm.

FinFET technology has become the most promising alternative to continue CMOS scaling due to its improved short channel effects. Design flexibility reduces on FinFET based circuits such as SRAM cells due to the effective channel width is determined by an integer number of fins. In this work, the impact of fin height size of FinFET transistors on the simultaneous behavior of soft error sensitivity and SRAM cell static noise margin is investigated. 3-D TCAD Sentarus environment is used to quantify the amount of collected and critical charges of an SRAM cell due to a heavy ion strike while Mix-Mode Hspice-TCAD simulation is used for stability analysis. Even more, the influence of process variations on sensitivity to soft errors and cell stability is considered. A 10 nm-SOI Tri-Gate FinFET technology is used. Results show that increasing the fin height of FinFET transistors considerably increases SRAM cell sensitivity to soft errors but improves its stability. This suggests that the optimum fin height value of FinFET transistors of an SRAM cell depends on the best tradeoff between soft error robustness and stability.

In the last decade there has been an increasing interest and demand on the Internet of Things (IoT) and its applications. But, when a high level of computing and/or real time processing is required for these applications, different problems arise due to their requirements. In this context, low cost autonomous and distributed Small Board Computers (SBC) devices, with processing, storage capabilities and wireless communications can assist these IoT networks. Usually, these SBC devices run an operating system based on Linux. In this scenario, container-based technologies and fog computing are an interesting approach and both have led to a new paradigm in how devices cooperate, improving overall capacity in a cluster of these SBC devices. The use of containers is considered a lightweight virtualization, allowing an application to be broken into small tasks as services, enabling load balancing, flexibility and scalability. Nevertheless when the number of devices and containers increases in the cluster, it is required an orchestration layer. There are not many solutions and available alternatives using these technologies applied on these networks, and less an assessment of their performances. This paper focuses on these technologies when we use fog computing with low cost SBC devices in a context of IoT. We use Linux containers and different available orchestration platforms (in particular Docker Swarm and Kubernetes), to run on the top of the cluster of commercial SBC devices. Thus, we carry out a thorough functional and performance comparison with different real topologies (wired and wireless) and using both homogeneous and heterogeneous clusters of SBC devices, showing their results. We conclude that with the collected experimental results, Docker Swarm orchestration platform outperforms its counterparts in the scenarios shown.

eHealth systems provide medical support to users and contribute to the development of mobile and quality health care. They also provide results on the prevention and follow-up of diseases by monitoring health-status indicators and methodical data gathering in patients. Telematic management of health services by means of the Internet of Things provides immediate support and it is cheaper than conventional physical presence methods. Currently, wireless communications and sensor networks allow a person or group to be monitored remotely. The aim of this paper is to develop and assess a system for monitoring physiological parameters to be applied in different scenarios, such as health or sports. This system is based on a distributed architecture, where physiological data of a person are collected by several sensors, next, a Raspberry Pi joins the information and makes a standardization process, then, these data are sent to the Cloud to be processed. Our Cloud system stores the received data and makes a data fusion process in order to indicate the athlete&rsquo, s fatigue status at every moment. This system has been tested in collaboration with a small group of voluntary tri-athletes. A network simulation has been performed to plan a monitoring network for a bigger group of athletes. Finally, we have found that this system is useful for medium-term monitoring of the sports activities.
