Chain adsorption to nanofiller interfaces creating bound layers has become central to understanding property changes in polymer nanocomposites. We determine the impact different kinds of adsorbed layers can have on the local glass transition temperature Tg of polymer matrices in a model film system using a localized fluorescence method. This work compares the adsorption and desorption of adsorbed layers grown in solution with the solution washing characteristics of adsorbed layers formed in the melt, leveraging knowledge about polymer adsorption in solution to infer the structure of adsorbed layers formed in the melt. In the limit of zero concentration after a long time in solution, we find that both kinds of adsorbed layers reach the same limiting adsorbed amount h∞(c → 0) ≈ 1 nm, appearing to evolve to the same thermodynamic equilibrium state of a near monolayer of surface coverage. We propose that melt annealing leads to a coarsening of polymer segment–surface contacts, increasing the length of trains and shrinking loops and tails, slowing the subsequent kinetics of these adsorbed chains in solution. Considering how the pyrene-labeled chains intermix with the adsorbed layer enables us to discriminate between the impact of tails, loops, and trains as threading of loops takes longer. We find that large fluffy loops, tails, and trains have little to no impact on the local Tg. A large 30 K increase in local Tg is observed for 30-min solvent washed well-annealed films at long intermixing times that we attribute to the threading of small tight loops. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examined if being ostracized (excluded and ignored) changes working self‐perception of personality ─ a core aspect of the self ─ which may contribute to understanding post‐ostracism behaviour. Across three studies (N = 943), using a virtual ball‐toss game (i.e., Cyberball), participants were either ostracized, included or mentally visualized playing the game. Subsequently, participants reported working self‐perceptions of their personality (using two measures of Big Five personality), ostracism's immediate effects (e.g., basic needs) and post‐ostracism behavioural intentions: aggressive temptations and solitude seeking. Across the studies, ostracism in Cyberball negatively impacted working self‐perception of personality: ostracized participants were less conscientious, agreeable, open and extraverted, and more neurotic (negative emotionality), compared to controls. Illustrating that altered working self‐perceptions are important to consider, ostracism's increase of aggressive temptations was mediated by agreeableness, even when accounting for ostracism's immediate (reflexive) effects. Additionally, ostracism's increase in solitude seeking was mediated by extraversion. Ultimately, these aversive self‐perceptions may create difficulties in socially connecting with others. Aims: Lyme disease (LD) cases in the United States are estimated to be approaching 500,000 annually. Protective measures, such as repellent use and wearing protective clothing are recommended by public health officials. However, no protective measure has been proven to be consistently effective, partly because they require consistent and persistent behaviour change. While safe and effective vaccines are in development, it is unclear what factors influence the intention to vaccinate against LD. This study uses the Health Belief Model (HBM) framework to determine key drivers associated with vaccine intention. The HBM is widely applied in public health research and uses the following constructs: perceived susceptibility and severity of disease, perceived benefits and barriers to disease prevention, and cues to action for disease prevention to predict health behaviours. To date, the HBM framework has not been applied to vaccination intention for LD. Methods and Results: Data were collected from 874 adults and 834 caregivers of children residing in US states endemic to LD. Sampling adults and caregivers allows us to explore how the intention to vaccinate differs among those at‐risk. Estimates from structural equation modelling (SEM) show that the HBM constructs explain much of the variation in intention to vaccinate against LD. Both adult and caregiver intentions to vaccinate are positively influenced by cues to action, perceived susceptibility of LD, and perceived benefits to vaccination. However, there is variation in the influence of constructs across the samples. Caregiver's intention to vaccinate is positively influenced by the perceived severity of LD and negatively influenced by safety concerns about the vaccine, whereas adult intention is negatively influenced by perceived barriers to vaccination. Conclusion: A strong relationship of cues to action on vaccine intention in samples of adults and caregivers suggests the importance of a recommendation from a healthcare provider or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Background and Objectives: Use of algorithms to identify patients with high data‐continuity in electronic health records (EHRs) may increase study validity. Practical experience with this approach remains limited. Methods: We developed and validated four algorithms to identify patients with high data continuity in an EHR‐based data source. Selected algorithms were then applied to a pharmacoepidemiologic study comparing rates of COVID‐19 hospitalization in patients exposed to insulin versus noninsulin antidiabetic drugs. Results: A model using a short list of five EHR‐derived variables performed as well as more complex models to distinguish high‐ from low‐data continuity patients. Higher data continuity was associated with more accurate ascertainment of key variables. In the pharmacoepidemiologic study, patients with higher data continuity had higher observed rates of the COVID‐19 outcome and a large unadjusted association between insulin use and the outcome, but no association after propensity score adjustment. Discussion: We found that a simple, portable algorithm to predict data continuity gave comparable performance to more complex methods. Use of the algorithm significantly impacted the results of an empirical study, with evidence of more valid results at higher levels of data continuity. Plain Language Summary: When doing research using electronic health records, one big problem is that sometimes information is missing or not consistently recorded. There are methods (algorithms) that can help identify which patients' records are more complete and reliable. However, it's not clear how much these methods actually improve the results of studies about how drugs affect populations (pharmacoepidemiologic studies). Aims Methods and Results Conclusion A growing number of Lyme disease (LD) cases in the U.S. are reported in states neighbouring those with high‐incidence (>10 cases per 100,000 population) rates. Considering the evolving epidemiology, high‐incidence counties in many of these “neighbouring states,” and the forthcoming vaccines, understanding the drivers of vaccination intention is critical, particularly how drivers of intention in neighbouring states vary relative to regions currently classified as high incidence.This study uses the Health Belief Model (HBM) to determine the key drivers associated with vaccine intention for U.S. adults and caregivers of children residing in neighbouring states.Using an established panel with quotas for age, sex, race/ethnicity and urbanity, we surveyed 887 adults and 822 caregivers of children residing in U.S. neighbouring states. Survey items included measures of intention and HBM constructs, all of which were assessed using 5‐point Likert scales. We subsequently used structural equation modelling to understand the influence of the HBM constructs on LD vaccine intention.Estimates from structural equation modelling show that the HBM constructs explain much of the variation in intention to vaccinate against LD. Intentions to vaccinate for both adults and caregivers are positively influenced by cues to action, perceived susceptibility of LD, and perceived benefits to vaccination. Both are also negatively influenced by perceived barriers to vaccination. The caregiver's intention to vaccinate is also positively influenced by the perceived severity of LD.The intention to vaccinate for respondents residing in LD neighbouring states is strongly influenced by recommendations from healthcare providers or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Five years ago, an article in WIREs Water provided the first comprehensive analysis of historic (legacy) landfill sites vulnerable to coastal flooding and erosion at a national scale (England). This update expands upon that article by considering the potential impacts of climate change upon inland historic landfills. Globally, there are hundreds of thousands of landfills that predate modern environmental regulations, and where waste is not isolated from the surrounding environment, but climate change impacts on the pollution risk from historic landfills in freshwater environments has received little attention. Where climate change causes an increase in the frequency and magnitude of fluvial flood events, this will increase leachate generation and the probability of landfill erosion and solid waste release. Where there is increased drought the landfill capping materials may crack, opening up new pollutant pathways, and increasing the risk of solid waste release. Changes to groundwater movement resulting from climate change may open new leachate pathways, and in England alone, thousands of historic landfills are in (groundwater) Source Protection Zones where modern regulations to protect drinking water supplies would not permit their construction. This increased contaminant release from historic landfills in freshwater environments may impact surface and/or groundwater quality and ecological health, increase costs for drinking water monitoring/treatment, or make some abstraction sources unviable. This is especially of concern where receptors are subject to multiple pressures and may cause tipping points to be reached. Further research is warranted into contaminant behavior, receptor vulnerability, historic landfill risk prioritization, and mitigation/remediation methods. Species‐specific management strategies have been implemented to address persistently low continental populations of several duck species, including the northern pintail (Anas acuta). In the Canadian Prairie Pothole Region (PPR), addressing threats from spring‐seeded cereals on pintail productivity may provide sufficient gains to recover populations. Research on pintail duckling ecology has revealed that duckling survival may be greater in grassland‐dominated landscapes than in annual cropland‐dominated landscapes, possibly limiting the benefits of fall‐seeded cropping practices. Winter wheat crops increase nest success and may assist nesting pintail populations through provision of nesting refuges from spring tillage operations, earlier hatch, and greater nest densities compared to traditional spring‐seeded cereal crops. Yet inadequate duckling survival may reduce these benefits. Our principal objective was to examine if pintail reproductive success in winter wheat in cropland‐dominated landscapes was comparable to grassland‐dominated landscapes or, alternatively, if duckling survival rates in cropland‐dominated landscapes offset the gains of greater nesting success in winter wheat. We captured and radio‐marked 104 nesting female pintails in grasslands and croplands of southern Saskatchewan, during 2011–2012. We modeled cumulative survival to 30 days post hatch in relation to landscape composition and land cover type, specifically, the influence of nesting in fall‐seeded crops. Predicted 30‐day survival for ducklings hatched in perennial cover (40.8% [85% CI = 40.0–44.6%]) in grassland‐dominated landscapes and winter wheat (38.2% [32.0–44.4%]) in cropland‐dominated landscapes was more than double survival of ducklings hatched in spring‐seeded cropland (16.9% [12.6–21.6%]) in cropland‐dominated landscapes. Ducklings moving through local environments with more perennial cover and seasonal wetlands, but less wetland edge, had increased survival. The benefit of greater nest survival in winter wheat was not completely superseded by reduced duckling survival for broods raised in intensive agricultural landscapes. The retention of grassland landscapes and expansion and promotion of fall‐seeded crops in cropland‐dominated landscapes can benefit northern pintails across broad regions of the PPR. Understanding how the early stages of sexual signal diversification proceed is critically important because these microevolutionary dynamics directly shape species trajectories and impact macroevolutionary patterns. Unfortunately, studying this is challenging because signals involve complex interactions between behavior, morphology, and physiology, much of which can only be measured in real-time. In Hawaii, male Pacific field cricket song attracts both females and a deadly parasitoid fly. Over the past two decades, there has been a marked increase in signal variation in Hawaiian populations of these crickets, including novel male morphs with distinct mating songs. We capitalize on this rare opportunity to track changes in morph composition over time in a population with three novel morphs, investigating how mate and parasitoid attraction (components of sexual and natural selection) may shape signal evolution. We find dramatic fluctuation in morph proportions over the three years of the study, including the arrival and rapid increase of one novel morph. Natural and sexual selection pressures act differently among morphs, with some more attractive to mates and others more protected from parasitism. Collectively, our results suggest that differential protection from parasitism among morphs, rather than mate attraction, aligns with recent patterns of phenotypic change in the wild. Introduction Methods Results Discussion and Conclusions Alcohol screening among Indigenous Australians is important to identify individuals needing support to reduce their drinking. Understanding clinical contexts in which clients are screened, and which clients are more or less likely to be screened, could help identify areas of services and communities that might benefit from increased screening.We analysed routinely collected data from 22 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations Australia‐wide. Data collected between February 2016 and February 2021 were analysed using R, and aggregated to describe screening activity per client, within 2‐monthly extraction periods. Descriptive analyses were performed to identify contexts in which clients received an Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test consumption (AUDIT‐C) screen. Multi‐level logistic regression determined demographic factors associated with receiving an AUDIT‐C screen. Three models are presented to examine if screening was predicted by: (i) age; (ii) age and gender; (iii) age, gender and service remoteness.We observed 83,931 occasions where AUDIT‐C was performed at least once during a 2‐monthly extraction period. Most common contexts were adult health check (55.0%), followed by pre‐consult examination (18.4%) and standalone item (9.9%). For every 10 years' increase in client age, odds of being screened with AUDIT‐C slightly decreased (odds ratio 0.98; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.98, 0.99). Women were less likely to be screened with AUDIT‐C (odds ratio 0.95; 95% CI 0.93, 0.96) than men.This study identified areas where alcohol screening can be increased (e.g., among women). Increasing AUDIT‐C screening across entire communities could help reduce or prevent alcohol‐related harms. Future Indigenous‐led research could help identify strategies to increase screening rates. PURPOSE: Previous studies document underuse of next-generation sequencing (NGS). We examined the impact to oncology care for veterans of incorporating NGS ordering into the Veterans Affairs (VA) electronic medical record (EMR) at two New York City VA Medical Centers. METHODS: We identified patients with non–small cell lung cancer and prostate cancer with oncology clinic visits and NGS testing indications between January and December 2021. Patients were divided into external ordering (EO) with visits before we implemented an EMR ordering system for NGS in July 2021, and internal ordering (IO) with visits after this date. The primary outcome was proportion of NGS testing performed in EO versus IO groups. Secondary outcomes were time between metastatic disease diagnosis to receipt of test by vendor, time of metastatic diagnosis to result, and proportion of testing by race. RESULTS: A total of 168 patients were identified, 116 EO and 52 IO patients. Between IO and EO periods, testing significantly increased from 52% to 87% (P ≤.01); it was conducted more quickly, with time from metastatic diagnosis to sample receipt by the NGS vendor improving to median 37 days from 299 days (P =.03); and the time from documented metastatic disease to a test result improved to median 56 days from 309 days (P =.03). The proportion of tissue received by the vendor was not significantly different between the two groups. There were no significant differences in testing according to self-reported race. CONCLUSION: Integration of NGS ordering in the EMR led to increased proportion and speed of testing for a vulnerable patient population served by the country's largest health system. The Forest Fire Danger Index (FFDI) is the main measure used in Australia for estimating fire risk. Recent work by the authors showed that the FFDI forms stable state regimes, nominated as fire climate regimes. These regimes shifted to greater intensity in southern and eastern Australia around the year 2000 and, a decade later, further north. Reductions in atmospheric moisture were the primary contributor. These changes have not been fully incorporated into future projections. This paper compares the recent regime shifts with the most recent national projections of FFDI, published in 2015. They show that for most states and regions, the 2030 upper limit is approached or exceeded by the recent shift, except for two states with large arid zones, South Australia and Western Australia. Methods for attributing past changes, constructing projections, and the inability of climate models to reproduce the recent decreases in atmospheric moisture, all contribute to these underestimates. An aspect ratio 9.5 rectangular wing is articulated in revolving and translating motions at a 45° angle of incidence and Reynolds number R e = O (300). The effects of rotational (Coriolis and centripetal) accelerations and relative inflow velocity profile on vorticity transport within the leading-edge vortex (LEV) system are independently investigated. For the range of displacements studied (180° rotation and corresponding translational displacement), a stably attached leading-edge vortex (LEV) is observed when rotational accelerations and/or a linearly varying inflow velocity profile is present; however, the inflow velocity profile has a stronger effect on stability of the LEV. LEV vorticity magnitude and lift are significantly augmented when both factors are included (i.e., the full revolving wing case). Vorticity transport analyses are conducted in a planar control region two chords from the axis of rotation, where LEV stability is typically observed on revolving wings at high incidence and at an equivalent spanwise position in the translating case. The fully revolving wing case exhibits a substantially larger leading-edge shear-layer vorticity flux than the other cases, whereas Coriolis tilting makes little contribution to regulation of LEV strength. A correlation is found between the spanwise convective flux and tilting flux contributions in all cases. Decomposition of the spanwise convective flux term demonstrates that the two phenomena are kinematically linked and, together, define a new out-of-plane convective flux term that captures the essence of the spanwise convective flux. In 1314, the Oxford Dominican monk Nicholas Trevet was commissioned to write a commentary on Seneca's tragedies. Trevet's interpretation of character and plot in Seneca's Medea differs in many ways from 21st-century classical scholars. Because Trevet relied on a single manuscript from the A tradition, he and his readers did not have access to a Senecan Medea who asks Jason whether he 'recognizes his wife' before departing Corinth in a flying chariot drawn by serpents because the last nineteen lines of the play did not exist in A. Trevet did not know a Medea who told her Nurse that she 'would become' Medea. It is Trevet's Medea, and not Jason, who is being pursued by Pelias's son Acastus. For Trevet, Jason's alliance with Creon's daughter Creusa is calculated not to protect himself and his sons from an angry and dangerous Acastus, but in order to save Medea's life. Furthermore, the theme of Medea as Jason's saviour, and this act of salvation itself as the cause of crime, informs Trevet's reading (and misreading) of important passages. Finally, when Medea argues back and forth with herself, Trevet attributes Medea's regard for her sons as 'not mine' to her loss of power over them because of her exile from Corinth, without any mention that the sons might now belong to Jason's new wife Creusa. These are all subtle interpretations that cumulatively form a unique 'reading' of Seneca's Medea offered by the very first commentator on all of Seneca's plays, seven hundred years ago. How do lay individuals reconstruct, appropriate or resist culturally sanctioned narratives about their nation's past? The current study examined this question through an open‐ended survey administered to a US sample, stratified by age and gender (N = 399). We identified three major historical narratives that were popular among Americans. Specifically, we identified positive narratives of the nation's progress over time and glorifying narratives of American exceptionalism, alongside a popular counter‐narrative that was critical of the nation as reproducing ongoing cycles of injustice. Representations of national origins were significantly more salient for the narratives of Progress and Glorification, while more recent and lived events were salient for Critical narratives. Progress and Critical narratives were both associated with a constructive orientation to national identity, while Glorifying narratives were associated with blind patriotism. Critical and Glorifying narratives were consistently opposed in their associated political attitudes and in their patterns of endorsement across party affiliations. Overall, it appeared that narratives of progress were most popular and least polarised. We discuss the implications of these findings through the perspective that narratives provide dynamic content for identity construction as well as the means for articulating resistance to hegemony within specific historical and political contexts. Background Community-acquired pneumonia is a well-studied condition; yet, in the urgent care setting, patient characteristics and adherence to guideline-recommended care are poorly described. Within Intermountain Health, a nonprofit integrated US health care system based in Utah, more patients present to urgent care clinics (UCCs) than emergency departments (EDs) for pneumonia care. Methods We performed a retrospective cohort study 1 January 2019 through 31 December 2020 in 28 UCCs within Utah. We extracted electronic health record data for patients aged ≥12 years with ICD-10 pneumonia diagnoses entered by the bedside clinician, excluding patients with preceding pneumonia within 30 days or missing vital signs. We compared UCC patients with radiographic pneumonia (n = 4689), without radiographic pneumonia (n = 1053), without chest imaging (n = 1472), and matched controls with acute cough/bronchitis (n = 15 972). Additional outcomes were 30-day mortality and the proportion of patients with ED visits or hospital admission within 7 days after the index encounter. Results UCC patients diagnosed with pneumonia and possible/likely radiographic pneumonia by radiologist report had a mean age of 40 years and 52% were female. Almost all patients with pneumonia (93%) were treated with antibiotics, including those without radiographic confirmation. Hospital admissions and ED visits within 7 days were more common in patients with radiographic pneumonia vs patients with "unlikely" radiographs (6% vs 2% and 10% vs 6%, respectively). Observed 30-day all-cause mortality was low (0.26%). Patients diagnosed without chest imaging presented similarly to matched patients with cough/acute bronchitis. Most patients admitted to the hospital the same day after the UCC visit (84%) had an interim ED encounter. Pneumonia severity scores (pneumonia severity index, electronic CURB-65, and shock index) overestimated patient need for hospitalization. Conclusions Most UCC patients with pneumonia were successfully treated as outpatients. Opportunities to improve care include clinical decision support for diagnosing pneumonia with radiographic confirmation and development of pneumonia severity scores tailored to the UCC. Reservoir formation in a river system changes a lotic environment to more lacustrine conditions, with impacts throughout the ecosystem. In this study, a river reach containing typical salmonid riffle/run habitat was flooded to create a large, deep pool from June to September in each of 3 years. We test the hypothesis that juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) with their preference for run/riffle habitats will respond to the transformation to a lentic environment by moving into adjacent lotic environments. Movements of juvenile Atlantic salmon were monitored using a combination of biotelemetry (radio‐ and passive integrated transponder‐tagging) and electrofishing. Results showed that no tracked fish moved away from the created pool habitat. Mass‐specific growth rates showed the created pool habitat resulted in net growth of juveniles. The results confirm that fish may not immediately (i.e., at least for an approximate 2 months) respond to rapid, large‐scale habitat alterations by moving to find similar habitat conditions outside the altered habitat. This is most probably related to plasticity of behavior and habitat use, and no change in biological conditions to a point that would negatively impact fish growth and survival, for example food availability, competition, or predation. The results also support the hypothesis that the relative importance of physical habitat variables is not universal among streams and populations, therefore limiting the value of applying standard habitat suitability criteria and use. Objectives: The objective of this study was to provide naturalistic data on the use of guanfacine for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in a clinically referred sample of youth with Down syndrome (DS). Methods: The medical records of children and adolescents with DS who received guanfacine for the treatment of ADHD from a multidisciplinary neurodevelopmental disorder clinic between September 1, 2011, and September 10, 2021, were reviewed. Demographic and clinical characteristics, guanfacine dose and treatment duration, and adverse effects were recorded. Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI) scores for ADHD symptom severity (S) and improvement (I) were retrospectively assigned by a child and adolescent psychiatrist based on review of the clinic notes. Response to guanfacine was defined as completion of at least 12 weeks of treatment and a Clinical Global Impression Improvement subscale rating ≤2 (1 = "very much improved" or 2 = "much improved"). Results: Twenty-one patients were eligible for inclusion, of whom 17 (81%) completed at least 12 weeks of guanfacine. Ten of the 21 patients (48%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 28%–68%) responded to treatment. The median time on guanfacine treatment covered by the clinic notes was 50.4 weeks, with a range of 0.3 weeks to 7.5 years. Thirteen patients (62%) remained on guanfacine at the time of their most recent clinic note. Nine patients had adverse events documented in their clinic notes (43%; 95% CI: 24%–63%), most commonly sleepiness (n = 7) and constipation (n = 2). Conclusion: About half of patients with DS responded to guanfacine for the treatment of ADHD and many tolerated long-term use. Background: While regular cigar smoking is believed to carry similar health risks as regular cigarette smoking, the impact of cigar use, alone or in combination with cigarettes, on obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has not been well characterized. The purpose of this study was to examine the prospective association between exclusive and dual cigar and cigarette use and incident self-reported diagnosed COPD. Methods: This study used data from Waves 1–5 (2013–2019) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study, a nationally representative survey of U.S. adults. Longitudinal data from adults aged 40 to 79 at Wave 1, without a pre-existing COPD diagnosis who participated at follow-up interview were analyzed. A time-varying current tobacco exposure, lagged by one wave and categorized as: (a) never/non-current use; (b) exclusive cigar use; (c) exclusive cigarette use; and (d) dual cigar/cigarette use. Multivariable models adjusted for demographics (age, sex, race or ethnicity, education), clinical risk factors (asthma, obesity), and smoking-related confounders (second-hand smoke exposure, other combustible tobacco product use, e-cigarette use, time since quitting, cigarette pack-years). The incidence of self-reported diagnosed COPD was estimated using discrete-time survival models, using a general linear modeling (GLM) approach with a binomial distribution and a complementary log-log link function. Results: The analytic sample consisted of 9,556 adults with a mean (SD) age of 56 (10.4), who were predominately female (52.8%) and Non-Hispanic White (70.8%). A total of 906 respondents reported a diagnosis of COPD at follow-up. In the fully adjusted model, exclusive cigar use (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) = 1.57, 95% CI: 0.77, 3.21) was not associated with increased COPD risk compared to non-use, while exclusive cigarette use (aHR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.13, 1.93) and dual cigar/cigarette use (aHR = 1.88, 95% CI: 1.24, 2.85) were. Conclusions: Exclusive cigarette use and dual cigar/cigarette use were associated with diagnosed incident COPD. These results suggest that cigars, when used in combination with cigarettes, may be associated with poorer COPD health outcomes. Dual use may promote a higher likelihood of inhaling cigar smoke, and future research would benefit from examining whether inhalation of cigar smoke increases COPD risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inpatient educational conferences are a key part of internal medicine residency training. Many residencies made conferences virtual during the COVID-19 pandemic, and are now returning to in-person sessions. As we navigate this change, we can seize this opportunity to re-evaluate the role that inpatient conferences serve in resident education. In this paper, we briefly review the history of inpatient educational conferences before offering five recommendations for improvement. Our recommendations include grounding conference formats in educational theory, leveraging the expertise of all potential educators, broadening content to include health equity and justice throughout all curricula, and explicitly focusing on cultivating community among participants. Recognizing that each residency program is different, we anticipate that these recommendations may be implemented differently based on program size, available resources, and current institutional practices. We also include examples of prior successful curricular reforms aligned with our principles. Training and assessment of agility is often prioritised by soccer coaches and practitioners aiming to develop multi-directional speed. Although the importance of agility is advocated throughout childhood and adolescence, limited data evidence agility performance at different stages of adolescence. The purpose of this study was to examine differences in multi-directional speed performance in youth soccer players spanning an entire soccer academy. A total of 86 male junior-elite soccer players volunteered to participate. Anthropometric data were collected, alongside performance data from a battery of physical tests including sprinting, jumping, change of direction, reaction time, and agility. Bayesian models using log-likelihoods from posterior simulations of parameter values displayed linear or curvilinear relationships between both chronological and biological age and performance in all tests other than agility and reaction time. For agility and reaction time tests, performance improved until ~14 years of age or the estimated age of peak height velocity whereby arrested development in performance was observed. Our results demonstrate that while most performance skills improve as chronological or biological age increases, measures of agility and reaction time may not. These findings support the notion that agility performance is complex and multifaceted, eliciting unique, challenging physical demands and non-linear development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this research is to describe the descriptive and dynamic characteristics of the role that practice currently plays in fine art doctoral dissertations. We examined fine art dissertations published in the ProQuest Global database from 2018 to 2021, guided by the methodological design of a qualitative meta-study. The descriptive and dynamic characteristics of each dissertation were analyzed. The results of the descriptive analysis indicate that the role of practice in art doctoral dissertations is active, particularly in the United Kingdom, and it is used within a variety of art disciplines. The results regarding the dynamic characteristics of practice dissertations underscore the issues of medium, emerging methodologies, and the complexity of assigning practice-type categories to research. In summary, practice-based research within art doctoral research plays a significant role in both its use and contributions to the dynamics of a dissertation. By considering the challenges of increasing the clarity of concepts, understanding the issues associated with word count, the development of taxonomies for focusing research, giving greater attention to writing abstracts, and encouraging increased publication in academic journals, practice dissertations will continue to play an important role in fine art doctoral work. Law enforcement officers in the U.S. are more likely to use lethal force against non-Hispanic Black citizens than on their non-Hispanic White counterparts. The purpose of this study was to assess estimates of the national prevalence of fatal firearm violence by law enforcement officers (LEOs) against non-Hispanic Black Americans. The Web-Based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System (WISQARS) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were analyzed using descriptive statistics and joinpoint regression from 2011 to 2020. During the decade (2011–2020) LEOs fatally shot 5,073 citizens and 1,170 were non-Hispanic Black (23%). The vast majority (96%) were males and two-thirds (66%) of those killed were ages 20–39 years. The region with the highest number of LEO fatal shootings was the Western U.S. Firearm deaths of non-Hispanic Blacks were the dominant (82%) method of LEO-induced deaths. Non-Hispanic Black Americans experience LEO firearm-related injuries and deaths at a much higher rate than their non-Hispanic White counterparts. In the context of the racial disparities among people who die following LEO-related gunshot wounds, changes to police training systems and an examination of implicit biases among LEOs should be investigated as the next step in reducing the use of lethal force practices. Our group previously reported a burn biopsy algorithm (BBA-V1) for categorizing burn wound depth. Here, we sought to promulgate a newer, simpler version of the BBA (BBA-V2). Burn wounds undergoing excision underwent 4 mm biopsies procured every 25 cm2. Serial still photos were obtained at enrollment and at excision intraoperatively. Burn wounds assessed as likely to heal by 21 days were imaged within 72 h of injury and at 21 days. A sample of 798 burn wound biopsies were classified by both BBAV1 and BBAV2 algorithms. For nonoperative burn wounds, the proportion of healing versus nonhealing pixels at 21 days after injury were compared. The 798 biopsies were classified by BBAV1 as 24% SPT, 47% DPT, 28% FT and by BBAV2 as 3% SPT, 67% DPT, and 30% FT (p < 0.0001). Overall, the proportion of biopsies whose wound reclassification changed from a nonoperative to operative pathway was 21% (95% CI: 18–24%). Nonoperative wounds judged at injury as being SPT contained 12.8 million pixels. Repeat 21-day imaging revealed 11.3 million healed pixels (accuracy = 89.6% (95% CI: 89.59–89.62)). BBA-V2 was associated with a significantly higher concordance with visual assessment for burn wounds clinically judged as deep partial and full thickness. • Burn surgeons clinically diagnosed burn wounds as DPT or FT with 97% accuracy. • Burn surgeons predicted spontaneous healing with 89% accuracy. • Our collection of 1192 burn wound biopsies is the largest in the literature. Background Internal medicine residents frequently experience distressing clinical events; critical event debriefing is one tool to help mitigate their effects. Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of a 1-hour workshop teaching residents a novel, efficient approach to leading a team debrief after emotionally charged clinical events. Methods An internal needs assessment identified time and confidence as debriefing barriers. In response, we created the STREAM (Structured, Timely, Reflection, tEAM-based) framework, a 15-minute structured approach to leading a debrief. Senior residents participated in a 1-hour workshop on the first day of an inpatient medicine rotation to learn the STREAM framework. To evaluate learning outcomes, participants completed the same survey immediately before and after the session, and at the end of their 4-week rotation. Senior residents at another site who did not complete the workshop also evaluated their comfort leading debriefs. Results Fifty out of 65 senior residents (77%) participated in the workshop. After the workshop, participants felt more prepared to lead debriefs, learned a structured format for debriefing, and felt they had enough time to lead debriefs. Thirty-four of 50 (68%) workshop participants and 20 of 41 (49%) comparison residents completed the end-of-rotation survey. Senior residents who participated in the workshop were more likely than nonparticipants to report feeling prepared to lead debriefs. We report the discovery of new lensed quasar candidates in the imaging data of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) Data Release 4, covering |$1\, 310\deg ^2$| of the sky with median seeing in the i band of ≈0.6 arcsec. In addition to two catalogues of Million Quasars Catalog v7.2 and AllWISE Catalog of Mid-Infra Red Active Galactic Nuclei, containing confirmed and candidate quasars, we preselect quasar sources using colour cuts from the HSC (grizy) and unWISE (W 1 + W 2) photometric data based on SDSS spectroscopic catalogues. We search for the presence of multiple point sources with similar colour through the convolution of the Laplacian of the preselected quasar image cutouts with the Laplacian of the point spread function, resulting in a reduction of lens candidates from 1 652 329 to 121 511 (7.4 per cent). After visual binary classification, we grade 6 199 (0.4 per cent) potential lenses on a scale of 0 to 3, with 3 indicating a lens and 0 indicating a non-lens. Finally we obtain 162 lens candidates with an average grade of ≥2, and among them, we successfully recover 18 known lenses. By fitting the light distribution and removing the known contaminants, we discover that 57 new systems contain at least two point sources and a galaxy in between, including 10 possible quadruply lensed quasars. This new sample exhibits a median separation of 1.26 arcsec and a magnitude limit of i ≈ 22. Spectroscopic or high-resolution imaging follow up on these newly discovered lensed quasar candidates will further allow their natures to be confirmed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Production and use of engineered nanomaterials have grown substantially in recent years, leading to an increased potential for occupational exposure to these materials. Health and safety data remain largely unknown or incomplete for most engineered nanomaterials. The management of possible risks associated with engineered nanomaterials in the workplace is of paramount importance for workers, employers, and occupational health and safety (OHS) professionals and is a complex and developing field of research. A key component of risk management is the effective communication of known and potential risks in the workplace. Many proposals and recommendations have been made for signage to warn of the location and use of engineered nanomaterials within occupational settings. Such signage could raise awareness and serve as a reminder of the potential unknown health and safety risks presented by engineered nanomaterials. We have designed a simple visual pictogram intended to indicate the presence of engineered nanomaterials in the workplace. Herein, we present our pictogram in contrast with those concomitantly identified in various scientific guidelines and literature, provide details on a pilot-scale evaluation of this signage administered before a recent institution-level adaptation, and provide recommendations for those interested in implementing this signage in other workplaces. Strengthening risk communication by adapting this visual warning pictogram could help draw attention to potential risks, improve workplace hygiene, and ideally, decrease occupational exposure for those working with engineered nanomaterials. It is well known that via the augmented Lagrangian method, one can solve Stokes' system by solving the nearly incompressible linear elasticity equation. In this paper, we show that the converse holds, and approximate the inverse of the linear elasticity operator with a convex linear combination of parameter-free operators. In such a way, we construct a uniform preconditioner for linear elasticity for all values of the Lamé parameter λ ∈ [ 0 , ∞). Numerical results confirm that by using inf-sup stable finite-element spaces for the solution of Stokes' equations, the proposed preconditioner is robust in λ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large midlevel (3–6 km AGL) shear is commonly observed in supercell environments. However, any possible influence of midlevel shear on an updraft has been relatively unexplored until now. To investigate, we ran 10 simulations of supercells in a range of environments with varying midlevel shear magnitudes. In most cases, larger midlevel shear results in a storm motion that is faster relative to the low-level hodograph, meaning that larger midlevel shear leads to stronger low-level storm-relative flow. Because they are physically connected, we present an analysis of the effects of both midlevel shear and low-level storm-relative flow on supercell updraft dynamics. Larger midlevel shear does not lead to an increase in cohesive updraft rotation. The tilting of midlevel environmental vorticity does lead to localized areas of larger vertical vorticity on the southern edge of the updraft, but any dynamical influence of this is overshadowed by that of much larger horizontal vorticity in the same area associated with rotor-like circulations. This storm-generated horizontal vorticity is the primary driver behind lower nonlinear dynamic pressure on the southern flank of the midlevel updraft when midlevel shear and low-level storm-relative flow are larger, which leads to a larger nonlinear dynamic pressure acceleration in those cases. Storm-generated horizontal vorticity is responsible for the lowest nonlinear dynamic pressure anywhere in the midlevel updraft, unless the mesocyclone becomes particularly intense. These results clarify the influence of midlevel shear on a supercell thunderstorm, and provide additional insight on the role of low-level storm-relative flow on updraft dynamics. Significance Statement: Persistent rotation in supercell thunderstorms results from the tilting of horizontal spin into the vertical direction. This initially horizontal spin is the result of shear, which is a change in wind speed and/or direction with height. More shear in the layer 0–3 km above ground level is well understood to lead to stronger rotation within the storm, but the influence of shear in the 3–6-km layer is unclear and is investigated here. We find that horizontal spin originating in the 3–6-km layer has little impact on vertically oriented thunderstorm rotation. Instead, intense regions of horizontal spin that are generated by the storm itself (rather than having originated from the background environment) dominate storm dynamics at midlevels. A sustainable, bio-based, mesoporous material, Starbon A800, was explored for use as an adsorbent in solid phase extraction (SPE). A solution containing seven nitrosamines was first used as a standard to optimise conditions for extraction efficiency with Starbon A800. After optimising conditions, 25 compounds of varying polarity (terpenes, phenolics, pesticides, PAHs, amines, and nitrosamines) were extracted with SPE using either Starbon® A800, C18 or Porous Graphitic Carbon (PGC) as the adsorbent, for comparison purposes. At the same time, 3 different elution solvents (heptane, dichloromethane, and ethanol) were used for each type of adsorbent. Hansen solubility parameters can be used to choose an appropriate elution solvent for the selected SPE adsorbent. The best average SPE recoveries found for the 25 various compounds were 83%, 79%, and 65% using Starbon A800, PGC, and C18 adsorbents respectively and these had dichloromethane as the elution solvent. The identification and quantification of components was carried out using UV-visible spectroscopy, two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) with time of flight/mass spectrometry (TOF/MS) or a nitrogen chemiluminescence detector (NCD). The optimized method was successfully applied to extract volatile organic compounds from red wine and tap water using Starbon A800. Starbon A800 was shown to be a promising, low-cost, green, scalable, alternative adsorbent for the extraction of various types of organic compounds of a wide range of polarities using SPE. Conversion of land for agricultural use is a leading driver of global biodiversity loss. Natural and semi‐natural lands within agricultural landscapes are targeted for protection because they provide habitat for many organisms.Pothole (or kettle) wetlands occur across the Northern Hemisphere and are a focus for conservation both because of their location within agriculturally intensive landscapes and their importance to vertebrates, especially migratory birds.Recent evidence suggests that wetlands may also be an important habitat for arthropods, including insects that provide ecosystem services. To understand how insects associate with wetlands and landscape features, we examine the relationship between bumblebees (Bombus), and wetland area, cropland area and wetland perimeter‐area ratio.We found that wetland area is significantly positively associated with the occurrence and abundance of the species studied. We also found that the relationship between bumblebees and wetland perimeter‐area ratio varied across the growing season. This suggests that the importance of wetland edge as a foraging habitat varies across the season.These results show the utility of wetlands to bees, though their resources are likely not being used uniformly by all bumblebee species or across the entire growing season. Our results also suggest that pothole wetlands in agricultural landscapes are likely to support biodiversity, and their conservation contributes to overall ecosystem health and function. Global consciousness (GC), encompassing cosmopolitan orientation, global orientations (i.e. openness to multicultural experiences) and identification with all humanity, is a relatively stable individual difference that is strongly associated with pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours, less ingroup favouritism and prejudice, and greater pandemic prevention safety behaviours. Little is known about how it is socialized in everyday life. Using stratified samples from six societies, socializing institution factors correlating positively with GC were education, white collar work (and its higher income) and religiosity. However, GC also decreased with increasing age, contradicting a 'wisdom of elders' transmission of social learning, and not replicating typical findings that general prosociality increases with age. Longitudinal findings were that empathy-building, network-enhancing elements like getting married or welcoming a new infant, increased GC the most across a three-month interval. Instrumental gains like receiving a promotion (or getting a better job) also showed positive effects. Less intuitively, death of a close-other enhanced rather than reduced GC. Perhaps this was achieved through the ritualized management of meaning where a sense of the smallness of self is associated with growth of empathy for the human condition, as a more discontinuous or opportunistic form of culture-based learning. Fire is a disturbance that serves to maintain the diverse mosaic of vegetation in the Eastern Deciduous Forest. However, our ability to reconstruct fire occurrence from hardwood tree scars still lags far behind our expertise in reconstructing fire history from conifers in the western United States. This study examines the fidelity of fire scaring in multiple tree species in the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge in Indiana, which is located in the central hardwood region of the Eastern Deciduous Forest. All 15 species, except for red oak, showed evidence of past fires, and most samples recorded multiple fire events. No fire scars were recorded in the latewood of the samples. Most of the fires scars occurred in the earlywood (May) suggesting the dormant season fires are likely associated with fires in March to April before the growing season begins. No synchronous fires were recorded across all sites, but fires occurred in 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985, and 1988 across multiple sites. This suggests that these were larger spreading fires. Establishment pulses were documented in association with fire events in 1981, 1984, and 1995, suggesting that fire may benefit the establishment or root sprouting of some hardwood species. Fourteen of the fifteen species that we sampled preserved fire scars, suggesting that the diverse suite of species in the Eastern Deciduous Forest is a viable sampling pool for examining fire history across this forest type. Athletes typically experience a mild‐to‐moderate, self‐limiting illness following infection with the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Some athletes, however, can develop prolonged symptoms, with breathlessness, cough, and chest tightness impacting return to training and competition. In athletes with persistent cardiopulmonary symptoms following COVID‐19, focus is usually placed on the identification and characterization of cardiac complications, such as myocarditis. In this review, we focus on summarizing the literature assessing pulmonary complications and physiological consequences associated with COVID‐19 illness in athletes. Yucca moths (Tegeticula and Parategeticula) are specialized pollinators of yucca plants, possessing unique, tentacle-like mouthparts used to actively collect pollen and deposit it onto the flowers of their hosts. The moths' larvae feed on the developing seeds and fruit tissue. First described in 1873, the yucca–yucca moth pollination system is now considered the archetypical example of a coevolved intimate mutualism. Research conducted over the past three decades has transformed our understanding of yucca moth diversity and host plant interactions. We summarize the current understanding of the diversity, ecology, and evolution of this group, review evidence for coevolution of the insects and their hosts, and describe how the nature of the interaction varies across evolutionary time and ecological contexts. Among the ground-nesting bees are several proven crop pollinators, but only the alkali bee (Nomia melanderi) has been successfully managed. In <80 years, it has become the world's most intensely studied ground-nesting solitary bee. In many ways, the bee seems paradoxical. It nests during the torrid, parched midsummer amid arid valleys and basins of the western United States, yet it wants damp nesting soil. In these basins, extensive monocultures of an irrigated Eurasian crop plant, alfalfa (lucerne), subsidize millions of alkali bees. Elsewhere, its polylectic habits and long foraging range allow it to stray into neighboring crops contaminated with insecticides. Primary wild floral hosts are either non-native or poorly known. Kleptoparasitic bees plague most ground nesters, but not alkali bees, which do, however, host other well-studied parasitoids. Building effective nesting beds requires understanding the hydraulic conductivity of silty nesting soils and its important interplay with specific soil mineral salts. Surprisingly, some isolated populations endure inhospitably cold climates by nesting amid hot springs. Despite the peculiarities and challenges associated with its management, the alkali bee remains the second most valuable managed solitary bee for US agriculture and perhaps the world. Noise is part of daily life in the operating room, and too often is viewed as a necessary evil. However, much of the noise in operating rooms (ORs) is unnecessary, such as extraneous conversations and music, and could be reduced. At the least, noise is known to increase staff stress and to hamper effective communication; at the worst, it adversely affects patient outcomes. Blueshifts – or, more accurately, blue asymmetries – in broad emission lines such as C  iv λ1550 are common in luminous quasars and correlate with fundamental properties such as Eddington ratio and broad absorption line (BAL) characteristics. However, the formation of these blueshifts is still not understood, and neither is their physical connection to the BAL phenomenon or accretion disc. In this work, we present Monte Carlo radiative transfer and photoionization simulations using parametrized biconical disc-wind models. We take advantage of the azimuthal symmetry of a quasar and show that we can reproduce C  iv blueshifts provided that (i) the disc-mid-plane is optically thick out to radii beyond the line formation region, so that the receding wind bicone is obscured; and (ii) the system is viewed from relatively low (that is, more face-on) inclinations (≲40°). We show that C  iv emission-line blueshifts and BALs can form in the same wind structure. The velocity profile of the wind has a significant impact on the location of the line formation region and the resulting line profile, suggesting that the shape of the emission lines can be used as a probe of wind-driving physics. While we are successful at producing blueshifts/blue asymmetries in outflows, we struggle to match the detailed shape or skew of the observed emission-line profiles. In addition, our models produce redshifted emission-line asymmetries for certain viewing angles. We discuss our work in the context of the C  iv λ1550 emission blueshift versus equivalent-width space and explore the implications for quasar disc wind physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report a class of compounds in which both PIII−X and PI forms featuring the same ligand are stable and readily cycled with each other. A series of PIII−X (X=Cl, Br, I) dicationic triflate salts supported by benzyl‐ and allyl‐substituted 2,6‐bis(benzimidazole‐2‐yl)pyridine (BZIMPY) ligands is synthesized. Surprisingly, treatment of these with R3PO (R=Et, Oct) results in reduction to BZIMPY‐ligated PI monocationic triflate salts while treatment with Ph3P reduces but also substitutes the compound to produce Ph3P‐BZIMPY‐ligated PI dicationic triflate salts. The mechanisms of these surprising reductions are probed experimentally and rationalized computationally. The PIII−X dications are shown to be strong Lewis acids both experimentally and computationally and to readily behave as X+, PX, and P+ transfer agents in reactions with phosphines, NHCs, and diazabutadienes. The PI mono‐ and dications are shown to be very effective P+ transfer agents when treated similarly. Oxidation from a monocationic PI salt back to the dicationic PIII−X (X=Cl, Br) salt was achieved by treatment with N‐chlorosuccinimide (NCS) or N‐bromosuccinimide (NBS). Full characterization is reported using multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single‐crystal X‐ray diffractometry where suitable crystals were isolated. While national parochialism is commonplace, individual differences explain more variance in it than cross-national differences. Global consciousness (GC), a multi-dimensional concept that includes identification with all humanity, cosmopolitan orientation, and global orientation, transcends national parochialism. Across six societies (N = 11,163), most notably the USA and China, individuals high in GC were more generous allocating funds to the other in a dictator game, cooperated more in a one-shot prisoner's dilemma, and differentiated less between the ingroup and outgroup on these actions. They gave more to the world and kept less for the self in a multi-level public goods dilemma. GC profiles showed 80% test–retest stability over 8 months. The QED-physical (QED-P) theory [J. H. Wilson, Phys. Essays 35, 5 (2022)] is actually the theory Dirac sought in 1962 in his attempt to predict the muon as an "extensible model of the electron." Recently, Lerche attempted to produce a classical solution to Dirac's equation for the radial motion of an extensible, basically classical, model of the electron. Both Dirac and Lerche proceeded in the wrong, classical direction in this effort. The QED-P center of charge (CoC) position operator is derived directly from the Dirac equation (DE) CoC velocity operator, ca with no ad hoc assumptions. QED-P was integrated with QED into a single theory, and that integration is proved by the highly accurate estimates of QED that are dependent on the DE velocity operator ca. Both QED and QED-P are based directly on the same Dirac Equation (DE) four current c(a,I) that QED couples with an external electromagnetic field. QED uses covariant perturbation theory to produce highly accurate results, except for the electron selfenergy, which is infinite. The DE velocity operator, ca, is the spatial part of the free electron four current, and has highly unusual properties compared to classical velocity vectors. QED could not produce highly accurate answers without the 4Ã--4 complex matrix ca as the electron CoC "velocity" operator. QED-P simply integrates the same Dirac equation four current used so successfully in QED, and produces the discrete internal spatial and time coordinate operators (ISaTCOs) to give the electron field's internal structure a very specific, but highly, nonclassical geometric description, with no ad hoc assumptions. QED and QED-P are complementary theories, and both are proven to be true by the accurate results of QED. The physical interpretation of QED-P is discussed in this paper as a two-dimensional, rapidly vibrating "point" charge, that is always located on a 2D CoC sphere in the electron rest frame, oscillating rapidly through eight eigenvalues with an ISaTCO period of ~ 10-22 s. The fact that the CoC's eight ISaTCO spatial eigenvectors are always are located on a 2D shell encompassing the electron's 3D "space" inside the CoC's 2D shell is a direct consequence of the DE, and nothing else. In this paper, it is shown that the "discrete" ISaTCOs produce a one dimensional, discrete quantum harmonic oscillator with its ISaTCOs always located on a 2D CoC shell. The CoC shell is an "2D hologram" emerging from a 3D volume inside the 2D CoC shell with a vibrational electronic clock" producing an internal phase that is propagated throughout space/time. The QED-P point electron charge rotates 720° to complete one internal electron discrete period. The electron's spin and magnetic moment [J. H. Wilson, Phys. Essays 29, 402 (2016); ibid. 31(1), 59-67 (2018); ibid. 34, 17 (2021)] are generated by the CoC ISaTCO in QED-P, and there is no need for "intrinsic" properties. There is a dearth of population studies regarding law enforcement officers (LEOs) use of fatal force against teenagers. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to characterize the teens most likely to be killed, the methods used to fatally injure teenagers, the geographic distribution of the killings, and the years of potential life lost before the age of 80 years (YPLL80) due to LEO interactions. Data from the Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System (WISQARS) from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were analyzed for the years 2010–2020. LEOs killed 330 teenagers; most were males (94.2%) and 6 of 7 teens (84.5%) were shot. The teens killed were disproportionately older teens ages 18–19 years (64.2%) and non-Hispanic Blacks (45.8%) who were usually killed in metropolitan areas (90.0%). The rate of teenage killings by LEOs significantly increased (267%) over the time frame studied. A total of 20,575 YPLL80 were lost and they significantly increased over time (263%). Mitigation of teenagers killed by LEOs will require transforming policing through policy changes (e.g. hiring and training) over an extended period of time. Amyloid β (Aβ) accumulation is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. In adult Drosophila brains, human Aβ overexpression harms climbing and lifespan. It's uncertain whether Aβ is intrinsically toxic or activates downstream neurodegeneration pathways. Our study uncovers a novel protective role against Aβ toxicity: intra-endoplasmic reticulum (ER) protein accumulation with a focus on laminin and collagen subunits. Despite high Aβ, laminin B1 (LanB1) overexpression robustly counters toxicity, suggesting a potential Aβ resistance mechanism. Other laminin subunits and collagen IV also alleviate Aβ toxicity; combining them with LanB1 augments the effect. Imaging reveals ER retention of LanB1 without altering Aβ secretion. LanB1's rescue function operates independently of the IRE1α/XBP1 ER stress response. ER-targeted GFP overexpression also mitigates Aβ toxicity, highlighting broader ER protein retention advantages. Proof-of-principle tests in murine hippocampal slices using mouse Lamb1 demonstrate ER retention in transduced cells, indicating a conserved mechanism. This report describes a 14-year-old male with a rare paratesticular inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor that presented atypically with acute unilateral scrotal pain and swelling. This presentation, which raised suspicion for testicular torsion, contrasts with the typical presentation of a slow-growing scrotal mass. Scrotal exploration revealed an infarcted right testis, demonstrating this locally aggressive tumor can undergo vascular invasion and occlude testicular blood supply. Thus, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor should be considered in the differential diagnosis when evaluating patients with acute scrotal pain suspicious for testicular infarction.
