Balandra, one of the most popular beaches in La Paz, Baja California Sur, was declared a flora and fauna protection area in 2012, and in 2019, the Mexican government chose it as the best beach in Mexico during the Tianguis Turistico celebrated on that year. Because of this latter distinction, this beach currently faces overcrowding. Formulating effective management policies depends, to a certain extent, on the knowledge of their recreational value and visitor characteristics. Recreational value allows us to know the benefits of the tradeoffs among the ecosystem services and society and exhibit the value of possible damages to marine ecosystems, like the one caused in 2022 by the fire of a tourist boat inside Balandra. Using the individual travel cost method and applying 159 questionnaires to site visitors, the individual willingness to pay to access Balandra Beach was estimated, resulting in USD 11.11/day/visitor. Recreational economic value (REV) for Balandra was estimated using two essential criteria: first, the total visitors registered in 2021, and second, the daily maximum carrying capacity. Welfare recreational loss was also calculated, derived from the site’s two-month closure, using REV as a proxy. Finally, beach management options and possible environmental and economic policy instruments that could be implemented are discussed.

ABSTRACTSince the introduction of Haemophilus Influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccines, invasive Hib disease has strongly declined worldwide, yet continued control of Hib disease remains important. In Europe, currently three different hexavalent combination vaccines containing Hib conjugates are marketed. In this phase IV, single-blind, randomized, controlled, multi-country study (NCT04535037), we aimed to compare, in a 2 + 1 vaccination schedule, the immunogenicity and safety and show non-inferiority, as well as superiority, of DTPa-HBV-IPV/Hib (Ih group) versus DTaP5-HB-IPV-Hib (Va group) in terms of anti-polyribosylribitol phosphate (PRP) antibody geometric mean concentrations (GMCs) and proportion of participants reaching anti-PRP antibody concentrations greater than or equal to a threshold of 5 µg/mL. One month after the booster vaccination, the anti-PRP antibody GMC ratio (Ih group/Va group) was 0.917 (95% CI: 0.710–1.185), meeting the non-inferiority criteria. The difference in percentage of participants (Ih group – Va group) reaching GMCs ≥5 µg/mL was -6.3% (95% CI: -14.1% to 1.5%), not reaching the predefined non-inferiority threshold. Interestingly, a slightly higher post-booster antibody avidity was observed in the Ih group versus the Va group. Both vaccines were well tolerated, and no safety concerns were raised. This study illustrates the different kinetics of the anti-PRP antibody response post-primary and post-booster using the two vaccines containing different Hib conjugates and indicates a potential differential impact of concomitant vaccinations on the anti-PRP responses. The clinical implications of these differences should be further studied.

Background and aims Real-world evidence characterising the burden of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) in Europe is limited. The aim of this study was to characterise patients in a large European EGPA cohort. Methods This retrospective, non-interventional, longitudinal study (GSK ID: 214661) recruited cross-specialty physicians from France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK to conduct medical chart reviews for patients with a physician-confirmed diagnosis of EGPA. Patients were ≥12 years of age at diagnosis with ≥1 year of follow-up data from the first clinical visit with the physician (index date). Outcome measures collected from index date to end of follow-up included clinical manifestations and healthcare resource utilisation (HCRU). Results In total, 407 patient medical charts were reviewed by 204 physicians; median (interquartile range) duration of follow-up from index date was 2.2 (1.7−3.5) years. Most patients (73.5%) had asthma. Patients underwent multiple diagnostic assessments, and 74.9% received ≥3 different therapies between diagnosis and end of follow-up (98.8% oral corticosteroids, 63.9% immunosuppressive therapies, 45.5% biologics). During follow-up, 84.5% of patients experienced EGPA clinical manifestations; most were considered moderate or severe and commonly affected the lungs (55.8%; including lung infiltrates 25.8% and severe asthma 24.8%), ear, nose and throat (53.3%), and skin (41.8%). HCRU was substantial: 26.0% of patients made emergency department visits, 36.6% were hospitalised and 84.8% had outpatient visits. Conclusions These real-world data show that EGPA presents a substantial burden to patients and the healthcare system. Earlier and better differential diagnosis and appropriate treatment may help reduce incidence of clinical manifestations and HCRU.

La contingencia sanitaria 2020-2023 supuso un choque para la economía mundial y para la estabilidad de los Estados y sus alianzas. Los países europeos han enfrentado la gestión de la pandemia totalmente condicionados por las últimas décadas de paradigma social y económico neoliberal, si bien los gobiernos y las instituciones internacionales han impulsado políticas intervencionistas en la economía, de corte neokeynesiano. También ha sido un periodo durante el cual las apelaciones a la sociedad han aparecido nuevamente. Por otra parte, la guerra en Ucrania ha tenido consecuencias en Europa, como las sanciones económicas contra Rusia, los problemas relacionados con las libertades fundamentales (específicamente la libertad de prensa) y la influencia de los intereses de Estados Unidos en la diplomacia europea. En el presente artículo se propone contrastar la realidad sociopolítica actual de la Unión Europea con las capacidades de gestión mostradas durante la pandemia. Para ello trataremos en concreto los casos de España y de Francia, países vecinos, que pueden mostrar las tendencias generales con sus aristas más concretas. Para analizar la situación de ambos países se recurre a datos provenientes de institutos nacionales de estadísticas como por ejemplo el INSEE en el caso de Francia. Al final el artículo llevó a cuestionar la viabilidad de la Unión Europea y a poner énfasis en el fracaso de las políticas impulsadas desde la Comisión Europea, que siguen un marco neoliberal a pesar de la inevitable intervención del Estado en la economía en el contexto pandémico, post-pandémico, y ahora de guerra en Ucrania.

Background Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) is a rare but serious disease characterised by the combination of small-to-medium vessel vasculitis, blood and tissue eosinophilia, and asthma and/or sinonasal disease. This study estimated the prevalence and incidence of diagnosed EGPA in the United Kingdom (UK), and described the demographics, clinical characteristics and healthcare resource utilisation (HCRU) of this population. Methods This retrospective longitudinal study of patients with newly diagnosed EGPA (index) (2005–2019) used the Clinical Practice Research Datalink AURUM and Hospital Episode Statistics databases. The primary outcomes were the annual prevalence (2005–2019) and incidence (2006–2019) of EGPA, and secondary outcomes included patient demographics and clinical characteristics, and HCRU in the year pre- and post-index (diagnosis). Results Populations of patients with EGPA comprised 940 prevalent cases and 502 incident cases, of which 377 were linked to Hospital Episode Statistics. EGPA prevalence increased from 22.7 to 45.6 cases per 1 000 000 (2005–2019), driven by patients aged ≥18 years. Incidence ranged from 2.3 to 4.0 per 1 000 000 person-years (2006–2019). Pre-index, the most common clinical symptoms were respiratory related, and the most common comorbidities were asthma (80.6%) and nasal polyps (32.1%). Post-index, 19.1% had an EGPA-related inpatient stay (median length of stay 11.0 days) and 38.7% had five or more oral corticosteroid (OCS) prescriptions with a mean OCS possession ratio per patient of 47.0%. Conclusions Although EGPA incidence in the UK remains relatively stable, prevalence is increasing, and HCRU and OCS use remain frequent, suggesting considerable healthcare burden for patients with EGPA.

ABSTRACT: Objectives were to evaluate the effects of Bacillus subtilis PB6 (BSP) on gastrointestinal tract permeability, metabolism, inflammation, and production parameters in periparturient Holstein cows. Multiparous cows (n = 48) were stratified by previous 305-d mature equivalent milk yield and parity and assigned to 1 of 2 top-dressed dietary treatments 21 d before expected calving through 63 DIM: (1) control (CON; 13 g/d calcium carbonate; n = 24) or (2) BSP (13 g/d BSP; CLOSTAT, Kemin Industries, Des Moines, IA; n = 24). Gastrointestinal tract permeability was evaluated in vivo using the oral paracellular marker chromium (Cr)-EDTA. Effects of treatment, time, and treatment × time were assessed using PROC MIXED of SAS version 9.4 (SAS Institute Inc.). Prepartum dry matter intake (DMI) was unaffected by treatment; however, BSP supplementation decreased postpartum DMI relative to CON (0.7 kg). Milk yield, energy-corrected milk (ECM), fat-corrected milk (FCM), and solids-corrected milk (SCM) increased in BSP cows compared with CON (1.6, 1.8, 1.6, and 1.5 kg, respectively). Decreased DMI and increased production collectively improved feed efficiency of milk yield, ECM, FCM, and SCM for BSP cows (6, 5, 5, and 5%, respectively). No treatment differences were observed for concentrations of milk fat, protein, total solids, somatic cell count, somatic cell score, body weight, or body condition score. Milk urea nitrogen concentrations decreased (5%), whereas milk protein and lactose yield increased (5 and 2%, respectively) with BSP supplementation. Prepartum fecal pH did not differ among treatments; conversely, postpartum fecal pH was increased with BSP supplementation (0.09 pH units). Prepartum fecal dry matter percentage, starch, acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, and ethanol did not differ among treatments. Postpartum concentrations of the aforementioned fecal parameters were also unaffected by treatment, but fecal propionic acid concentration was decreased (24%) in BSP cows relative to CON. Circulating glucose, nonesterified fatty acids, l-lactate, and insulin were similar between treatments both pre- and postpartum. Prepartum β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) did not differ between treatments, but postpartum BSP supplementation decreased (21%) circulating BHB relative to CON. Regardless of treatment, inflammatory markers (serum amyloid A and haptoglobin) peaked immediately following parturition and progressively decreased with time, but this pattern was not influenced by treatment. Postpartum lipopolysaccharide binding protein tended to be decreased on d 3 in BSP relative to CON cows (19%). Neither treatment nor time affected Cr-EDTA area under the curve. In summary, supplementing BSP had no detectable effects prepartum, but increased key postpartum production parameters. Bacillus subtilis PB6 consistently increased postpartum fecal pH and decreased fecal propionate concentrations but did not appear to have an effect on gastrointestinal tract permeability.

Abstract The electrolytic reduction of CO2 in aqueous media promises a pathway for the utilization of the green house gas by converting it to base chemicals or building blocks thereof. However, the technology is currently not economically feasible, where one reason lies in insufficient reaction rates and selectivities. Current research of CO2 electrolysis is becoming aware of the importance of the local environment and reactions at the electrodes and their proximity, which can be only assessed under true catalytic conditions, i.e. by in operando techniques. In this work, multinuclear in operando NMR techniques were applied in order to investigate the evolution of the electrolyte chemistry during CO2 electrolysis. The CO2 electroreduction was performed in aqueous NaHCO3 or KHCO3 electrolytes at silver electrodes. Based on 13C and 23Na NMR studies at different magnetic fields, it was found that the dynamic equilibrium of the electrolyte salt in solution, existing as ion pairs and free ions, decelerates with increasingly negative potential. In turn, this equilibrium affects the resupply rate of CO2 to the electrolysis reaction from the electrolyte. Substantiated by relaxation measurements, a mechanism was proposed where stable ion pairs in solution catalyze the bicarbonate dehydration reaction, which may provide a new pathway for improving educt resupply during CO2 electrolysis.

In this study, we investigated the impact on surface topography and micro-mechanical properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) thin films when loaded with hardwood-derived biocarbon particles (BCP). The PVA/BCP composites were prepared with the conventional film casting method, after varying BCP concentrations of 6, 8, 10, 12, and 20 wt% were added to the PVA solution. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) investigations and nanoindentation tests were performed. The average roughness of the thin films increased with the increase in BCP content. The alternation between dark and light patterns observed in the AFM images showed an irregular surface topography with alternating high peaks and deep valleys. The skewness and kurtosis parameters showed that the different dispersion degrees of the BCP within the PVA matrix influenced the composites' surface roughness. The micro-mechanical properties of the thin film composites depended on the BCP type and concentration. Films reinforced with red oak-derived BCP had higher hardness and Young's modulus compared to films reinforced with willow SV1 and yellow-poplar BCP, which was attributed to the high carbon content and low ash content of red oak BCP. We argue that these results may be extrapolated to other types of BCP-reinforced thin films and can significantly contribute to enabling more efficient methods and protocols for reinforcing polymers with hardwood biocarbon.

Volatile products from thermal decomposition of lignocellulosic biomass have been well characterized, but the solid- and liquid-phase reactions during the early stages of decomposition are largely unknown. Here the initial solid-phase biomass thermal deconstruction reactions were analyzed in situ and with high particle heating rates, delineating how these processes occur. A variety of instrumentation was used to quantify the extent and relative rates of deconstruction, demonstrating that biopolymers resist the thermally energetic conditions to differing degrees, even when ensconced in biomass cell walls. Hemicellulose and the more frangible lignin components decompose and volatilize more readily than cellulose, which temporarily enriches biomass with cellulose. These chemical changes manifest in larger cell wall structural and mechanical property transformations. In all, this investigation concludes that these solid-phase reactions strongly influence the production rates of volatile species and will require additional study before these processes can be modeled precisely to improve yields of desired product.

Despite the continuous increase in capacity, lithium-ion intercalation batteries are approaching their performance limits. As a result, research is intensifying on next-generation battery technologies. The use of a lithium metal anode promises the highest theoretical energy density and enables use of lithium-free or novel high-energy cathodes. However, the lithium metal anode suffers from poor morphological stability and Coulombic efficiency during cycling, especially in liquid electrolytes. In contrast to solid electrolytes, liquid electrolytes have the advantage of high ionic conductivity and good wetting of the anode, despite the lithium metal volume change during cycling. Rapid capacity fade due to inhomogeneous deposition and dissolution of lithium is the main hindrance to the successful utilization of the lithium metal anode in combination with liquid electrolytes. In this perspective, we discuss how experimental and theoretical insights can provide possible pathways for reversible cycling of two-dimensional lithium metal. Therefore, we discuss improvements in the understanding of lithium metal nucleation, deposition, and stripping on the nanoscale. As the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) plays a key role in the lithium morphology, we discuss how the proper SEI design might allow stable cycling. We highlight recent advances in conventional and (localized) highly concentrated electrolytes in view of their respective SEIs. We also discuss artificial interphases and three-dimensional host frameworks, which show prospects of mitigating morphological instabilities and suppressing large shape change on the electrode level.

Abstract It is of general interest to combine the faradaic processes based high energy density of a battery with the non-faradaic processes based high power density of a capacitor in one cell. Surface area and functional groups of electrode materials strongly affect these properties. For the anode material Li4Ti5O12 (LTO), we suggest a polaron based mechanism that influences Li ion uptake and mobility. Here we show electrolytes containing a lithium salt induce an observable change in the bulk NMR relaxation properties of LTO nano particles. The longitudinal 7Li NMR relaxation time of bulk LTO can change by almost an order of magnitude and, therefore, reacts very sensitively to the cation and its concentration in the surrounding electrolyte. The reversible effect is largely independent of the used anions and of potential anion decomposition products. It is concluded that lithium salt containing electrolytes increase the mobility of surface polarons. These polarons and additional lithium cations from the electrolyte can now diffuse through the bulk, induce the observed enhanced relaxation rate and enable the non-faradaic process. This picture of a Li+ ion equilibrium between electrolyte and solid may help with improving the charging properties of electrode materials.

Abstract Mapped representations of species−habitat relationships often underlie approaches to prioritize area‐based conservation strategies to meet conservation goals for biodiversity. Generally a single surrogate species is used to inform conservation design, with the assumption that conservation actions for an appropriately selected species will confer benefits to a broader community of organisms. Emerging conservation frameworks across western North America are now relying on derived measures of intactness from remotely sensed vegetation data, wholly independent from species data. Understanding the efficacy of species‐agnostic planning approaches is a critical step to ensuring the robustness of emerging conservation designs. We developed an approach to quantify ‘strength of surrogacy’, by applying prioritization algorithms to previously developed species models, and measuring their coverage provided to a broader wildlife community. We used this inference to test the relative surrogacy among a suite of species models used for conservation targeting in the endangered grasslands of the Northern Sagebrush Steppe, where careful planning can help stem the loss of private grazing lands to cultivation. In this test, we also derived a simpler surrogate of intact rangelands without species data for conservation targeting, along with a measure of combined migration representative of key areas for connectivity. Our measure of intactness vastly outperformed any species model as a surrogate for conservation, followed by that of combined migration, highlighting the efficacy of strategies that target large and intact rangeland cores for wildlife conservation and restoration efforts.

The multi-scale hierarchical structure of tooth enamel enables it to withstand a lifetime of damage without catastrophic failure. While many previous studies have investigated structure-function relationships in enamel, the effects of crystal misorientation on mechanical performance have not been assessed. To address this issue, in the present study, we review previously published polarization-dependent imaging contrast (PIC) maps of mouse and human enamel, and parrotfish enameloid, in which crystal orientations were measured and displayed in every 60-nm-pixel. By combining those previous results with the PIC maps of sheep enamel presented here we discovered that, in all enamel(oid)s, adjacent crystals are slightly misoriented, with misorientation angles in the 0°-30° range, and mean 2°-8°. Within this limited range, misorientation is positively correlated with literature hardness values, demonstrating an important structure-property relation, not previously identified. At greater misorientation angles 8°30°, this correlation is expected to reverse direction, but data from different non-enamel systems, with more diverse crystal misorientations, are required to determine if and where this occurs. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: We identify a structure-function relationship in tooth enamels from different species: crystal misorientation correlates with hardness, contributing to the remarkable mechanical properties of enamel in diverse animals.
