Search

We report the discovery of a broad, 1.°5 long filamentary [O iii] emission nebulosity some 1.°2 southeast of the M31 nucleus. This nebulosity is not detected in Hα and has no obvious emission counterparts in X-ray, UV, optical, infrared, and radio surveys. To our knowledge, this emission feature has not been previously reported in the literature. We briefly discuss its possible origin.

We present a blind search for doublet intergalactic metal absorption with a method dubbed `agnostic stacking'. Using a forward-modelling framework we combine this with direct detections in the literature to measure the overall metal population. We apply this novel approach to the search for NeVIII absorption in a set of 26 high-quality COS spectra. We probe to an unprecedented low limit of log N$>$12.3 at 0.47$\leq z \leq$1.34 over a pathlength $\Delta$z = 7.36. This method selects apparent absorption without requiring knowledge of its source. Stacking this mixed population dilutes doublet features in composite spectra in a deterministic manner, allowing us to measure the proportion corresponding to NeVIII absorption. We stack potential NeVIII absorption in two regimes: absorption too weak to be significant in direct line studies (12.3 $$ 13.7). We do not detect NeVIII absorption in either regime. Combining our measurements with direct detections, we find that the NeVIII population is reproduced with a power law column density distribution function with slope $\beta = -1.86 \substack{+0.18 \\ -0.26}$ and normalisation log $f_{13.7} = -13.99 \substack{+0.20 \\ -0.23}$, leading to an incidence rate of strong NeVIII absorbers $dn/dz =1.38 \substack{+0.97 \\ -0.82}$. We infer a cosmic mass density for NeVIII gas with 12.3 $, Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures. Using offset-corrected Gaia-EDR3 parallax measurements and spectrophotometric methods, we have determined distances for 69 massive stars in the Carina OB1 association and associated clusters: Trumpler 16 (21 stars), Trumpler 14 (20 stars), Trumpler 15 (3 stars), Bochum 11 (5 stars), and South Pillars region (20 stars). Past distance estimates to the Carina Nebula range from 2.2 to 3.6 kpc, with uncertainties arising from photometry and anomalous dust extinction. The EDR3 parallax solutions show considerable improvement over DR2, with typical errors $\sigma_{\varpi}/\varpi \approx$~3-5%. The O-type stars in the Great Carina Nebula lie at essentially the same distance ($2.35\pm0.08$ kpc), quoting mean and rms variance. The clusters have distances of $2.32\pm0.12$ kpc (Tr 16), $2.37\pm0.15$ kpc (Tr 14), $2.36\pm0.09$ kpc (Tr 15), and $2.33\pm0.12$ kpc (Bochum 11) in good agreement with the $\eta$ Car distance of around 2.3 kpc. O-star proper motions suggest internal (2D) velocity dispersions $\sim4$ km/s for Tr 14 and Tr 16. Reliable distances allow estimates of cluster sizes, stellar dynamics, luminosities, and fluxes of photoionizing radiation incident on photodissociation regions in the region. We estimate that Tr 14 and Tr 16 have half-mass radii $r_h = 1.5-1.8$ pc, stellar crossing times $t_{\rm cr} = r_h/v_m \approx 0.7-0.8$ Myr, and two-body relaxation times $t_{rh} \approx 40-80$ Myr. The underlying velocity dispersion for Tr 14, if a bound cluster, would be $v_m \approx 2.1^{+0.7}_{-0.4}$ km/s for $N = 7600^{+5800}_{-2600}$ stars. With the higher dispersions of the O-stars, mass segregation might occur slowly, on times scales of 3-6~Myr.

Using X-ray constrained beta-models for the radial distribution of gas in the outskirts of galaxies, we analyze the termination of galactic winds and the formation and evolution of halo clouds by thermal instability. At low mass-loss rates, galactic winds are trapped within the halo, but they burst into the intergalactic medium during intermittent strong outflows with (dM/dt)_w > 10 M_sun/yr. We develop analytic models of halo clouds as they cool radiatively over condensation time scales t_c = (390 Myr)(T_6 /n_{-4}) (Z/Z_sun)^-1 for hydrogen number densities n_H = (10^{-4} cm^{-3}) n_{-4}, gas temperatures T = (10^6 K)T_6, and metallicities (Z/Z_sun). Halo gas can form kpc-scale clouds out to galactocentric distances r = 30-65 kpc, where efficient radiative cooling from 10^6 K down to 10^4 K occurs at Z > 0.3 Z_sun on timescales less than 1 Gyr. After condensing to column densities N_H > 3.5x10^{16} cm^{-2}, these clouds lose hydrostatic pressure support and fall inward on dynamical time scales of 200 Myr. Our baseline analysis will be followed by numerical calculations to understand the governing principles of halo cloud formation and transport of gas to the galactic disk.

Quasars and active galactic nuclei (AGN) are significant contributors to the metagalactic ionizing background at redshifts z alpha_s) depends on alpha_s, the H I column density slope beta, and the ratio R = f_esc(HI) / f_esc(HeII). We compare the model to Lya absorption lines of He II and H I toward the quasar HE~2347-4342. Internal AGN absorption with f_esc(HeII) = 0.6-0.8 but f_esc(HI) = 1 would increase the index by Delta-alpha_b = 0.3-1.0, corresponding to eta = 60-200 for beta = 1.5-1.6, in agreement with HST/COS observations at z = 2.5-2.9. The observed range of ratios, eta 0.4. Individual AGN with softer spectra, alpha_s > 1.7, and more internal He II absorption could produce a few absorbers with eta > 300 in proximity to AGN transverse to the sight line.

To establish the connection between galaxies and UV-detected absorption systems in the local universe, a deep ($g\leq20$) and wide ($\sim20^{\prime}$ radius) galaxy redshift survey is presented around 47 sight lines to UV-bright AGN observed by the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). Specific COS science team papers have used this survey to connect absorbers to galaxies, groups of galaxies, and large-scale structures, including voids. Here we present the technical details of the survey and the basic measurements required for its use, including redshifts for individual galaxies and uncertainties determined collectively by spectral class (emission-line, absorption-line, and composite spectra) and completeness for each sight line as a function of impact parameter and magnitude. For most of these sight lines the design criteria of $>90$% completeness over a $>1$ Mpc region down to $\lesssim0.1\,L^*$ luminosities at $z\leq0.1$ allows a plausible association between low-$z$ absorbers and individual galaxies. Ly$��$ covering fractions are computed to approximate the star-forming and passive galaxy populations using the spectral classes above. In agreement with previous results, the covering fraction of star-forming galaxies with $L\geq0.3\,L^*$ is consistent with unity inside one virial radius and declines slowly to $>50$% at 4 virial radii. On the other hand, passive galaxies have lower covering fractions ($\sim60$%) and a shallower decline with impact parameter, suggesting that their gaseous halos are patchy but have a larger scale-length than star-forming galaxies. We analyze the sources of free electrons that produce the large dispersion measures, DM $\approx 300-1600$ (in units cm$^{-3}$ pc), observed toward fast radio bursts (FRBs). Individual galaxies typically produce DM $\sim 25-60$ cm$^{-3}$ pc from ionized gas in their disk, disk-halo interface, and circumgalactic medium. Toward an FRB source at redshift $z$, a homogeneous IGM containing a fraction $f_{\rm IGM}$ of cosmological baryons will produce DM $= (935~{\rm cm}^{-3}~{\rm pc}) f_{\rm IGM} \, h_{70}^{-1} I(z)$, where $I(z) = (2/3 \Omega_m)[ \{ \Omega_m(1+z)^3 + \Omega_{\Lambda} \}^{1/2} - 1 ]$. A structured IGM of photoionized Ly-alpha absorbers in the cosmic web produces similar dispersion, modeled from the observed distribution, $f_b(N,z)$, of H I (Lya-forest) absorbers in column density and redshift with ionization corrections and scaling relations from cosmological simulations. An analytic formula for DM($z$) applied to observed FRB dispersions suggests that $z_{\rm FRB} \approx 0.2-1.5$ for an IGM containing a significant baryon fraction, $f_{\rm IGM} = 0.6\pm0.1$. Future surveys of the statistical distribution, DM($z)$, of FRBs identified with specific galaxies and redshifts, can be used to calibrate the IGM baryon fraction and distribution of Ly-alpha absorbers. For application to surveys of interstellar matter and Galactic structure, we compute new spectrophotometric distances to 139 OB stars frequently used as background targets for UV spectroscopy. Many of these stars have updated spectral types and digital photometry with reddening corrections from the Galactic O-Star (GOS) spectroscopic survey. We compare our new photometric distances to values used in previous IUE and FUSE surveys and to parallax distances derived from Gaia-DR2, after applying a standard (0.03 mas) offset from the quasar celestial reference frame. We find substantial differences between photometric and parallax distances (at d > 1.5 kpc) with increasing dispersion when parallax errors exceed 8%. Differences from previous surveys arise from new GOS stellar classifications, especially luminosity classes, and from reddening corrections. We apply our methods to two OB associations. For Perseus OB1 (nine O-stars) we find mean distances of $2.47\pm0.57$ kpc (Gaia parallax) and $2.99\pm0.14$ kpc (photometric) using a standard grid of absolute magnitudes (Bowen et al. 2008). For 29 O-stars in Car OB1 associated with Trumpler-16, Trumpler-14, Trumpler-15, and Collinder-228 star clusters, we find $2.87\pm0.73$ kpc (Gaia parallax) and $2.60\pm0.28$ kpc (photometric). Using an alternative grid of O-star absolute magnitudes (Martins et al. 2005) shifts these photometric distances 7% closer. Improving the distances to OB-stars will require attention to spectral types, photometry, reddening, binarity, and the grid of absolute magnitudes. We report ultraviolet spectra of the high-redshift (z{sub em} {approx} 2.9) quasar, HE 2347 - 4342, taken by the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope. Spectra in the G130M (medium resolution, 1135-1440 A) and G140L (low resolution, 1030-2000 A) gratings exhibit patchy Gunn-Peterson absorption in the 303.78 A Ly{alpha} line of He II between z = 2.39-2.87 (G140L) and z = 2.74-2.90 (G130M). With COS, we obtain better spectral resolution, higher signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), and better determined backgrounds than previous studies, with sensitivity to abundance fractions x{sub He{sub II}} {approx} 0.01 in filaments of the cosmic web. The He II optical depths from COS are higher than those with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer and range from {tau}{sub He{sub II}} { =} 5, with a slow recovery in mean optical depth to ({tau}{sub He{sub II}}) {

We present new moderate-resolution, far-ultraviolet spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (HST/COS) of the BL Lac object 1ES 1553+113 covering the wavelength range 1135 A =} 4(C/Si){sub sun} for the strongest component of the absorber complex. Galaxy redshift surveys show a number of massive galaxies at approximately the same redshift as this absorption complex, suggesting that it arises in a large-scale galaxy filament. As one of the brightest extragalactic X-ray andmore » {gamma}-ray sources, 1ES 1553+113 is of great interest to the high-energy astrophysics community. With no intrinsic emission or absorption features, 1ES 1553+113 has no direct redshift determination. We use intervening Ly{alpha} absorbers to place a direct limit on the redshift: z{sub em}>0.395 based on a confirmed Ly{alpha}+O VI absorber and z{sub em}>0.433 based on a single-line detection of Ly{alpha}. The current COS data are only sensitive to Ly{alpha} absorbers at z 0.4.« less

Cosmological simulations of Population III star formation suggest an initial mass function (IMF) biased toward very massive stars (M>100Msun) formed in minihalos at redshift z>20, when the cooling is driven by molecular hydrogen. However, this result conflicts with observations of extremely-metal poor (EMP) stars in the Milky Way halo, whose r-process elemental abundances appear to be incompatible with those expected from very massive Population III progenitors. We propose a new solution to the problem in which the IMF of second-generation stars formed at z>10, before reionization, is deficient in sub-solar mass stars, owing to the high cosmic microwave background temperature floor. The observed EMP stars are formed preferentially at z10^{-3.5} Zsun by winds from Population II stars. Our cosmological simulations of dark matter halos like the Milky Way show that current samples of EMP stars can only constrain the IMF of late-time Population III stars, formed at z, ApJ accepted, simulations of MW-like halos added, conclusions unchanged

We describe an ultraviolet spectroscopic survey of interstellar high-velocity cloud (HVC) absorption in the strong 1206.500 Angstrom line of Si III using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. Because the Si III line is 4-5 times stronger than O VI 1031.926, it provides a sensitive probe of ionized gas down to column densities N(Si III) = 5x10^11 cm^-2 at Si III equivalent width 10 mA. We detect high-velocity Si III over (91+/-4)% of the sky (53 of 58 sight lines), and 59% of the HVCs show negative LSR velocities. Per sight line, the mean HVC column density is = 13.19 +/- 0.45, while the mean for all 90 velocity components is 12.92 +/- 0.46. Lower limits due to Si III line saturation are included in this average, so the actual mean/median values are even higher. The Si III appears to trace an extensive ionized component of Galactic halo gas at temperatures 10^4.0 K to 10^4.5 K indicative of a cooling flow. Photoionization models suggest that typical Si III absorbers with 12.5 < log N(Si III) < 13.5 have total hydrogen column densities N(H) = 10^18 to 10^19 cm^-2 for gas of hydrogen density n(H) = 0.1 cm^(-3) and 10% solar metallicity. With typical neutral fractions N(HI)/N(H) = 0.01, these HVCs may elude even long duration 21-cm observations at Arecibo, the EVLA, and other radio facilities. However, if Si III is associated with higher density gas, n(H) > 1 cm^(-3), the corresponding neutral hydrogen could be visible in deep observations. While the average metallicity of the intergalactic medium rises above Z~10^{-3} Zsun by the end of the reionization, pockets of metal-free gas can still exist at later times. We quantify the presence of a long tail in the formation rate of metal-free halos during late stages of reionization (redshift z~6), which might offer the best window to detect Population III stars. Using cosmological simulations for the growth of dark matter halos, coupled with analytical recipes for the metal enrichment of their interstellar medium, we show that pockets of metal-free gas exist at z~6 even under the assumption of high efficiency in metal pollution via winds. A comoving metal-free halo formation rate d^2n/dtdV > 10^{-9} Mpc^{-3}yr^{-1} is expected at z=6 for halos with virial temperature T_{vir}~10^4 K (mass ~10^8 Msun), sufficient to initiate cooling even with strong negative radiative feedback. Under the assumption of a single Population III supernova formed per metal-free halo, we expect an observed supernova rate of 2.6x10^{-3} deg^{-2}yr^{-1} in the same redshift range. These metal-free stars and their supernovae will be isolated and outside galaxies (at distances >150 h^{-1} kpc) and thus significantly less biased than the general population of ~10^8 Msun halos at z~6. Supernova searches for metal-free explosions must thus rely on large area surveys. If metal-free stars produce very luminous supernovae, like SN2006gy, then a multi-epoch survey reaching m_AB =27 at 1 micron is sufficient for detecting them at z=6. While the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope will not reach this depth in the z band, it will be able to detect several tens of Population III supernovae in the i and r bands at z, 25 pages, 6 figures, ApJ accepted, added references

In two previous papers, we presented simulations of the first galaxies in a representative volume of the Universe. The simulations are unique because we model feedback-regulated galaxy formation, using time-dependent, spatially-inhomogeneous radiative transfer coupled to hydrodynamics. Here, we study the properties of simulated primordial dwarf galaxies with masses -3.0 and 10%--50% with [Z/H]>-5.0. We examine the constraints on high-redshift star formation, ultraviolet and X-ray pre-ionization, and the epoch of reionization at redshift z_r, inferred from the recent WMAP-5 measurement, tau_e = 0.084 +/- 0.016, of the electron scattering optical depth of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Half of this scattering can be accounted for by the optical depth, tau_e = 0.04-0.05, of a fully ionized intergalactic medium (IGM) at z < z_GP = 6-7, consistent with Gunn-Peterson absorption in neutral hydrogen. The required additional optical depth, Delta-tau_e = 0.03 +/- 0.02 at z > z_GP, constrains the ionizing contributions of first light sources. WMAP-5 also measured a significant increase in small-scale power, which lowers the required efficiency of star formation and ionization from mini-halos. Early massive stars (UV radiation) and black holes (X-rays) can produce a partially ionized IGM, adding to the residual electrons left from incomplete recombination. Inaccuracies in computing the ionization history, x_e(z), and degeneracies in cosmological parameters (Omega_m, Omega_b, sigma_8, n_s) add systematic uncertainty to the measurement and modeling of $��_e$. We conduct an ultraviolet (HST and FUSE) spectroscopic survey of HI (Lyman lines) and seven metal ions (OVI, NV, CIV, CIII, SiIV, SiIII, FeIII) in the low-redshift intergalactic medium (IGM) at z, Comment: Submitted to ApJ, 27 pages in ApJ format (figure and discussion added)

We have used the Hubble/STIS and FUSE archives of ultraviolet spectra of bright AGN to identify intergalactic Lya absorbers in nearby (z < 0.1) voids. From a parent sample of 651 Lya absorbers, we identified 61 void absorbers located more than 1.4/h_70 Mpc from the nearest L* or brighter galaxy. Searching for metal absorption in high-quality (S/N > 10) spectra at the location of three diagnostic metal lines (O VI 1032, C IV 1548, Si III 1206), we detected no metal lines in any individual absorber, or in any group of absorbers using pixel co-addition techniques. The best limits on metal-line absorption in voids were set using four strong Lya absorbers with N(H I) > 10^{14} cm^-2, with 3-sigma equivalent-width limits ranging from 8 mA (O VI), 7-15 mA (C IV), and 4-10 mA (Si III). Photoionization modeling yields metallicity limits Z < 10^{-1.8+/-0.4} Z_sun, from non-detections of C IV and O VI, some 6 times lower than those seen in Lya and OVI absorbers at z < 0.1. Although the void Lya absorbers could be pristine material, considerably deeper spectra are required to rule out a universal metallicity floor produced by bursts of early star formation, with no subsequent star formation in the voids. The most consistent conclusion derived from these low-z results, and similar searches at z = 3-5, is that galaxy filaments have increased their mean IGM metallicity by factors of 30-100 since z = 3., Accepted for ApJ, 8 pages including Fig 1a,b

We compute the production rate of photons in the ionizing Lyman continua (LyC) of H I (lambda < 912 A), He I (lambda < 504 A), and He II (lambda < 228 A) using recent stellar evolutionary tracks coupled to a grid of non-LTE, line-blanketed (WM-basic) model atmospheres. The median LyC production efficiency is Q_LyC = (6+/-2)x10^60 LyC photons per Msun of star formation (range [3.1-9.4]x10^60) corresponding to a revised calibration of 10^{53.3+/-0.2} photons/s per Msun/yr. Efficiencies in the helium continua are Q_HeI ~ 10^60 photons/Msun and Q_HeII ~ 10^56 photons/Msun at solar metallicity and larger at low metallicity. The critical star formation rate needed to maintain reionization against recombinations at z = 7 is rho_SFR = (0.012 Msun/yr/Mpc^3) [(1+z)/8]^3 [(C_H /3) (0.2/ f_esc) for fiducial values of IGM clumping factor C_H = 3 and LyC escape fraction f_esc = 0.2. The boost in LyC production efficiency is an important ingredient, together with metallicity, C_H, and f_esc, in assessing whether IGM reionization was complete by z ~ 7. Monte-Carlo sampled spectra of coeval starbursts during the first 5 Myr have intrinsic flux ratios of F(1500)/F(900) = 0.4-0.5 and F(912^-)/F(912^+) = 0.4-0.7 in the far-UV (1500A), the LyC (900A), and at the Lyman edge (912A). Recent suggestions of a "photon underproduction crisis" (Kollmeier \etal\ 2014) have generated concern over the intensity and spectrum of ionizing photons in the metagalactic ultraviolet background (UVB). The balance of hydrogen photoionization and recombination determines the opacity of the low-redshift intergalactic medium (IGM). We calibrate the hydrogen photoionization rate ($��_{\rm H}$) by comparing {\it Hubble Space Telescope} spectroscopic surveys of the low-redshift column density distribution of \HI\ absorbers and the observed ($z < 0.4$) mean \Lya\ flux decrement, $D_A = (0.014)(1+z)^{2.2}$, to new cosmological simulations. The distribution, $f(N_{\rm HI}, z) \equiv d^2 {\cal N} / d(\log N_{\rm HI}) dz$, is consistent with an increased UVB that includes contributions from both quasars and galaxies. Our recommended fit, $��_{\rm H}(z) = (4.6 \times 10^{-14}$ s$^{-1})(1+z)^{4.4}$ for $0 < z < 0.47$, corresponds to unidirectional LyC photon flux $��_0 \approx 5700$~cm$^{-2}$~s$^{-1}$ at $z = 0$. This flux agrees with observed IGM metal ionization ratios (\CIII/\CIV\ and \SiIII/\SiIV) and suggests a 25-30\% contribution of \Lya\ absorbers to the cosmic baryon inventory. The primary uncertainties in the low-redshift UVB are the contribution from massive stars in galaxies and the LyC escape fraction ($f_{\rm esc}$), a highly directional quantity that is difficult to constrain statistically. We suggest that both quasars and low-mass starburst galaxies are important contributors to the ionizing UVB at $z < 2$. The influence of the first stars on the formation of second-generation objects at high redshift may be determined, in part, by their metal enrichment of surrounding gas. At a critical metallicity, Zcrit, primordial gas cools more efficiently by fine-structure lines of CII (157.74 um), OI (63.18 um, 145.5 um), SiII (34.8 um), and FeII (25.99 um, 35.35 um) than by HI or H2 emission. This cooling may alter the process of fragmentation into smaller units. We study the time-dependent cooling of primordial gas enriched by heavy elements from early massive stars, particularly O, Si, and Fe. We define Zcrit as the point when the total cooling rate by metals plus H2 equals the adiabatic compressional heating. We explore two metallicity scenarios: (1) a single metallicity for all heavy elements; (2) individual metallicities (Z_C, Z_O, Z_Si, Z_Fe) from theoretical supernova yields. For dense gas [n > 10^3 cm^(-3)] with metals in relative solar abundances, fragmentation occurs at Zcrit ~ 10^(-3.5) Z_sun. However, for lower density gas, [n = 1-100 cm^(-3)], particularly in halos enriched in Si, O, and Fe, we find Zcrit = 0.1-1% Zsun. The critical metallicity approaches a minimum value at high-n set by efficient LTE cooling, with thermalized level populations of fine-structure states and H2 rotational states (J = 2 and J = 3). Primordial clouds of 10^8 Msun at 200K are detectable in redshifted fine-structure lines, with far-infrared fluxes between 10^-22 and 10^-21 W/m^2. For metallicities Z_O = 10^(-3) and molecular fractions f(H2) = 10^(-3) the fine-structure emission lines of OI, SiII, and FeII could be 10^2 - 10^3 times stronger than the H2 rotational lines at 28.22 um (J = 2-0) and 17.03 um (J = 3-1)., submitted to ApJ (13 pages, 10 figs, 5 tables)

Weak spectral features in BL Lacertae objects (BL Lac) often provide a unique opportunity to probe the inner region of this rare type of active galactic nucleus. We present a Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observation of the BL Lac H 2356-309. A weak Ly$\alpha$ emission line was detected. This is the fourth detection of a weak Ly$\alpha$ emission feature in the ultraviolet (UV) band in the so-called "high energy peaked BL Lacs", after Stocke et al. Assuming the line-emitting gas is located in the broad line region (BLR) and the ionizing source is the off-axis jet emission, we constrain the Lorentz factor ($\Gamma$) of the relativistic jet to be $\geq 8.1$ with a maximum viewing angle of 3.6$^\circ$. The derived $\Gamma$ is somewhat larger than previous measurements of $\Gamma \approx 3 - 5$, implying a covering factor of $\sim$ 3% of the line-emitting gas. Alternatively, the BLR clouds could be optically thin, in which case we constrain the BLR warm gas to be $\sim 10^{-5}\rm\ M_{\odot}$. We also detected two HI and one OVI absorption lines that are within $|\Delta v| < 150\rm\ km\ s^{-1}$ of the BL Lac object. The OVI and one of the HI absorbers likely coexist due to their nearly identical velocities. We discuss several ionization models and find a photoionization model where the ionizing photon source is the BL Lac object can fit the observed ion column densities with reasonable physical parameters. Intergalactic absorbers along lines of sight to distant quasars are a powerful diagnostic for the evolution and content of the intergalactic medium (IGM). In this study, we use the FUSE satellite to search 129 known lya absorption systems at z

We present a survey of NV and OVI (and where available CIV) in the Galactic halo, using data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) along 34 sightlines. These ions are usually produced in nonequilibrium processes such as shocks, evaporative interfaces, or rapidly cooling gas, and thus trace the dynamics of the interstellar medium. Searching for global trends in integrated and velocity-resolved column density ratios, we find large variations in most measures, with some evidence for a systematic trend of higher ionization (lower NV/OVI column density ratio) at larger positive line-of-sight velocities. The slopes of log[N(NV)/N(OVI)] per unit velocity range from -0.015 to +0.005, with a mean of -0.0032+/-0.0022(r)+/-0.0014(sys) dex/(km/s). We compare this dataset with models of velocity-resolved high-ion signatures of several common physical structures. The dispersion of the ratios, OVI/NV/CIV, supports the growing belief that no single model can account for hot halo gas, and in fact some models predict much stronger trends than are observed. It is important to understand the signatures of different physical structures to interpret specific lines of sight and future global surveys.

We present HST STIS/G140M spectra of 15 extragalactic targets, which we combine with GHRS/G160M data to examine the statistical properties of the low-z Ly-alpha forest. We evaluate the physical properties of these Ly-alpha absorbers and compare them to their high-z counterparts. We determine that the warm, photoionized IGM contains 29+/-4% of the total baryon inventory at z = 0. We derive the distribution in column density, N_HI^(1.65+/-0.07) for 12.5 14.5. The slowing of the number density evolution of high-W Ly-alpha clouds is not as great as previously measured, and the break to slower evolution may occur later than previously suggested (z~1.0 rather than 1.6). We find a 7.2sigma excess in the two-point correlation function (TPCF) of Ly-alpha absorbers for velocity separations less than 260 km/s, which is exclusively due to the higher column density clouds. From our previous result that higher column density Ly-alpha clouds cluster more strongly with galaxies, this TPCF suggests a physical difference between the higher and lower column density clouds in our sample.

We explore theoretical models of the ionization ratios of the Li-like absorbers NV, OVI, and CIV, in the Galactic halo. These ions are believed to form in nonequilibrium processes such as shocks, evaporative interfaces, or rapidly cooling gas, all of which trace the dynamics of the interstellar medium. As a useful new diagnostic, we focus on velocity-resolved signatures of several common physical structures: (1) a cooling Galactic fountain flow that rises, cools, and recombines as it returns to the disk; (2) shocks moving toward the observer; (3) a conductive interface with the observer located in the hotter gas. This last geometry occurs with the solar system inside a hot bubble, or when one looks out through the fragmenting top shell of our local bubble blown into the halo as part of the Galactic fountain. We provide an in-depth analysis of the He II and H I absorption in the intergalactic medium (IGM) at redshifts z = 2.3-2.9 toward HE 2347-4342, using spectra from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and the Ultraviolet-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) on the VLT telescope. Following up on our earlier study (Kriss et al. 2001, Science, 293, 1112), we focus here on two major topics: (1) small-scale variability (Delta z = 10^-3) in the ratio eta = N(He II)/N(H I); and (2) an observed correlation of high-eta absorbers (soft radiation fields) with voids in the (H I) Ly-alpha distribution. These effects may reflect fluctuations in the ionizing sources on scales of 1 Mpc, together with radiative transfer through a filamentary IGM whose opacity variations control the penetration of 1-5 ryd radiation over 30-40 Mpc distances. Owing to photon statistics and backgrounds, we can measure optical depths over the ranges 0.1 < tau(HeII) < 2.3 and 0.02 < tau(HI) < 3.9, and reliably determine values of eta = 4 tau(HeII)/tau(HI) over the range 0.1 to 460. Values of eta = 20-200 are consistent with models of photoionization by quasars with observed spectral indices alpha_s = 0-3. Values of eta > 200 may require additional contributions from starburst galaxies, heavily filtered quasar radiation, or density variations. Regions with eta < 30 may indicate the presence of local hard sources. We find that eta is higher in "void" regions, where H I is weak or undetected and 80% of the path length has eta > 100. These voids may be ionized by soft sources (dwarf starbursts) or by QSO radiation softened by escape from the AGN cores or transfer through the "cosmic web". The apparent differences in ionizing spectra may help to explain the 1.45 Gyr lag between the reionization epochs, z(HI) = 6.2 +/-0.2 and z(HeII) = 2.8 +/-0.2., 27 pages, 7 figures, to appear in ApJ

The first stars hold intrinsic interest for their uniqueness and for their potential importance to galaxy formation, chemical enrichment, and feedback on the intergalactic medium (IGM). The metal-free composition of the first stars restricts the stellar energy source to proton-proton burning rather than the more efficient CNO cycle. Consequently they are hotter, smaller, and have harder spectra than their present-day counterparts of finite metallicity. We present new results from a continuing study of metal-free stars from a cosmological point of view. We have calculated evolving spectra of Pop III clusters, derived from a grid of zero-metallicity stellar evolutionary tracks. We find that H-ionizing photon production from metal-free stellar clusters takes twice as long as that of Pop II to decline to 1/10 its peak value. In addition, metal-free stars produce substantially more photons than Pop II in the HeII ($E > 4$ Ryd) continuum. We suggest that large Ly$\alpha$ equivalent widths ($W_{\rm Ly\alpha} > 400$ Angstroms) may provide a means of detecting metal-free stellar populations at high redshift, and that HeII recombination lines ($\lambda$1640, $\lambda$4686) may confirm identifications of Population III. While Pop III clusters are intrinsically bluer than their Pop II counterparts, nebular continuum emission makes up this difference and may confuse attempts to discern Pop III stars with broadband colors. We describe a moderate-resolution FUSE survey of H2 along 70 sight lines to the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, using hot stars as background sources. FUSE spectra of 67% of observed Magellanic Cloud sources (52% of LMC and 92% of SMC) exhibit absorption lines from the H2 Lyman and Werner bands between 912 and 1120 A. Our survey is sensitive to N(H2) >= 10^14 cm^-2; the highest column densities are log N(H2) = 19.9 in the LMC and 20.6 in the SMC. We find reduced H2 abundances in the Magellanic Clouds relative to the Milky Way, with average molecular fractions = 0.010 (+0.005, -0.002) for the SMC and = 0.012 (+0.006, -0.003) for the LMC, compared with = 0.095 for the Galactic disk over a similar range of reddening. The dominant uncertainty in this measurement results from the systematic differences between 21 cm radio emission and Lya in pencil-beam sight lines as measures of N(HI). These results imply that the diffuse H2 masses of the LMC and SMC are 8 x 10^6 Msun and 2 x 10^6 Msun, respectively, 2% and 0.5% of the H I masses derived from 21 cm emission measurements. The LMC and SMC abundance patterns can be reproduced in ensembles of model clouds with a reduced H2 formation rate coefficient, R ~ 3 x 10^-18 cm^3 s^-1, and incident radiation fields ranging from 10 - 100 times the Galactic mean value. We find that these high-radiation, low-formation-rate models can also explain the enhanced N(4)/N(2) and N(5)/N(3) rotational excitation ratios in the Clouds. We use H2 column densities in low rotational states (J = 0 and 1) to derive a mean kinetic and/or rotational temperature = 82 +/- 21 K for clouds with N(H2) >= 10^16 cm^-2, similar to Galactic gas. We present basic data and modeling for a survey of the cool, photo-ionized Circum-Galactic Medium (CGM) of low-redshift galaxies using far-UV QSO absorption line probes. This survey consists of "targeted" and "serendipitous" CGM subsamples, originally described in Stocke et al. (2013, Paper 1). The ionizing fluxes from quasars and other active galactic nuclei (AGN) are critical for interpreting their emission-line spectra and for photoionizing and heating the intergalactic medium (IGM). Using far-ultraviolet spectra from the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we directly measure the rest-frame ionizing continua and emission lines for 159 AGN at redshifts 0.001 < z_AGN < 1.476 and construct a composite spectrum from 475-1875A. We identify the underlying AGN continuum and strong EUV emission lines from ions of oxygen, neon, and nitrogen after masking out absorption lines from the HI Lya forest, 7 Lyman-limit systems (N_HI > 10^17.2 cm^-2) and 214 partial Lyman-limit systems (15.0 < log N_HI < 17.2). The 159 AGN exhibit a wide range of FUV/EUV spectral shapes, F_nu \propto nu^(alpha_nu), typically with -2 < alpha_nu < 0 and no discernible continuum edges at 912A (H I) or 504A (He I). The composite rest-frame continuum shows a gradual break at 1000 A, with mean spectral index alpha_nu = -0.83 +/- 0.09 in the FUV (1200-2000A) steepening to alpha_nu = -1.41 +/- 0.15 in the EUV (500-1000A). [Abbreviated] We present the largest search to date for $z\sim8$ Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) based on 350 arcmin$^2$ of HST observations in the V-, Y-, J- and H-bands from the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies (BoRG) survey. The BoRG dataset includes $\sim$50 arcmin$^2$ of new data and deeper observations of two previous BoRG pointings, from which we present 9 new $z\sim8$ LBG candidates, bringing the total number of BoRG LBGs to 38 with $25.5\leqslant m_{J} \leqslant 27.6$ (AB system). We introduce a new Bayesian formalism for estimating the galaxy luminosity function (LF), which does not require binning (and thus smearing) of the data and includes a likelihood based on the formally correct binomial distribution as opposed to the often used approximate Poisson distribution. We demonstrate the utility of the new method on a sample of $97$ LBGs that combines the bright BoRG galaxies with the fainter sources published in Bouwens et al. (2012) from the HUDF and ERS programs. We show that the $z\sim8$ LF is well described by a Schechter function with a characteristic magnitude $M^\star = -20.15^{+0.29}_{-0.38}$, a faint-end slope of $\alpha = -1.87^{+0.26}_{-0.26}$, and a number density of $\log_{10} \phi^\star [\textrm{Mpc}^{-3}] = -3.24^{+0.25}_{-0.24}$. Integrated down to $M=-17.7$ this LF yields a luminosity density, $\log_{10} \epsilon [\textrm{erg}/\textrm{s/Hz/Mpc}^{3}] = 25.52^{+0.05}_{-0.05}$. Our LF analysis is consistent with previously published determinations within 1$\sigma$. We discuss the implication of our study for the physics of reionization. By assuming theoretically motivated priors on the clumping factor and the photon escape fraction we show that the UV LF from galaxy samples down to $M=-17.7$ can ionize only 10-50% of the neutral hydrogen at $z\sim8$. We present HST GHRS and STIS observations of five QSOs that probe the prominent high-velocity cloud (HVC) Complex C, covering 10% of the northern sky. Based upon a single sightline measurement (Mrk 290), a metallicity [S/H]=-1.05+/-0.12 has been associated with Complex C by Wakker et al. (1999a,b). We use one-dimensional radiative transfer simulations to study the evolution of H_2 gas-phase (H^- catalyzed) formation and photo-dissociation regions in the primordial universe. We find a new positive feedback mechanism capable of producing shells of H_2 in the intergalactic medium, which are optically thick in some Lyman-Werner bands. While these shells exist, this feedback effect is important in reducing the H_2 dissociating background flux and the size of photo-dissociation spheres around each luminous object. The maximum background opacity of the IGM in the H_2 Lyman-Werner bands is \tau_{H_2} ~ 1-2 for a relic molecular fraction x_{H_2}=2 x 10^{-6}, about 6 times greater than found by Haiman, Abel & Rees. Therefore, the relic molecular hydrogen can decrease the photo-dissociation rate by about an order of magnitude. The problem is relevant to the formation of small primordial galaxies with masses M_{DM} 10^4 K formed.

We present the target selection, observations, and data reduction and analysis process for a program aimed at discovering numerous, weak (equivalent width < 100 mA) Lya absorption lines in the local Universe (0.003 < z < 0.069). The purpose of this program is to study the physical conditions of the local intergalactic medium, including absorber distributions in Doppler width and H I column density, absorber number density and evolution with redshift, line-of-sight two-point correlation function, and the baryonic content and metallicity. By making use of large-angle, nearby galaxy redshift surveys, we will investigate the relationship (if any) between these Lya absorbers and galaxies, superclusters and voids. In Paper I, we present high resolution (~19 km/s) spectroscopic observations of 15 very bright (V < 14.5) AGN targets made with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We find 81 definite (> 4 sigma) and 30 possible (3-4 sigma) Lya absorption lines in these spectra, which probe a total pathlength of 116,000 km/s (delta z ~ 0.4) at very low redshift (z < 0.069) and column density (12.5< Log[Nh] < 14.5). We found numerous metal lines arising in the Milky Way halo, including absorption from 14 distinct high velocity clouds and numerous absorptions intrinsic to the target AGN. Here, we describe the details of the target selection, HST observations, and spectral reduction and analysis. We present reduced spectra and absorption line lists and ``pie diagrams'' showing the known galaxy distributions in the direction of each target. We describe a moderate-resolution Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) minisurvey of H2 in the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds using four hot stars and four active galactic nuclei as background sources. FUSE spectra of nearly every stellar and extragalactic source exhibit numerous absorption lines from the H2 Lyman and Werner bands between 912 and 1120 A. One extragalactic sight line (PKS 2155-304) with low N(H I) shows no detectable H2 and could be the "Lockman Hole of molecular gas," of importance for QSO absorption-line studies. We measure H2 column densities in low rotational states (J = 0 and 1) to derive rotational and/or kinetic temperatures of diffuse interstellar gas. The higher J abundances can constrain models of the UV radiation fields and gas densities. In three optically thick clouds toward extragalactic sources, we find nH ≈ 30-50 cm-3 and cloud thicknesses ~2-3 pc. The rotational temperatures for H2 at high Galactic latitude, T01 = 107 ± 17 K (seven sight lines) and 120 ± 13 K (three optically thick clouds), are higher than those in the Copernicus sample composed primarily of targets in the disk. We find no evidence for great differences in the abundance or state of excitation of H2 between sight lines in the Galaxy and those in the SMC and LMC. In the future, we will probe the distribution and physical parameters of diffuse molecular gas in the disk and halo and in the lower metallicity environs of the LMC and SMC.

We describe a moderate-resolution (20-25 km s-1) Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) study of the low-redshift intergalactic medium. We report on studies of seven extragalactic sight lines and 12 Lyβ absorbers that correspond to Lyα lines detected by Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph and Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. These absorbers appear to contain a significant fraction of the low-z baryons and were a major discovery of the HST spectrographs. Using FUSE data, with 40 mA (4 σ) Lyβ detection limits, we have employed the equivalent width ratio of Lyβ/Lyα, and occasionally higher Lyman lines, to determine the Doppler parameter b and accurate column densities N for moderately saturated lines. We detect Lyβ absorption corresponding to all Lyα lines with Wλ ≥ 200 mA. The Lyβ/Lyα ratios yield a preliminary distribution function of Doppler parameters, with mean b = 31.4 ± 7.4 km s-1 and median 28 km s-1, comparable to values at redshifts z = 2.0-2.5. If thermal, these b-values correspond to T ≈ 50,000 K, although the inferred Doppler parameters are considerably less than the widths derived from Lyα profile fitting, b/bwidth = 0.52. The typical increase in column density over that derived from profile fitting is Δ log N = 0.3, but ranges up to 1.0 dex. Our data suggest that the low-z Lyα absorbers contain sizable nonthermal motions or velocity components in the line profile, perhaps arising from cosmological expansion and infall.

We develop a method to extract the "effective equation of state" of the intergalactic medium from the doppler b parameter distribution of the low-density Lyman-alpha forest. We test the method on numerical simulations and then apply it to published observations of the Lyman-alpha forest at redshifts z from 0 to 4. We find that the effective equation of state is close to isothermal at redshift z=3, indicating that a second reheating of the IGM took place at z=3. This reheating can plausibly be identified with the reionization of HeII observed to occur at z about 3.

Absorption due to HeII Ly-alpha has been detected at low resolution in the spectra of four quasars between redshifts z = 2.74-3.29. We assess these observations, giving particular attention to the radiative transfer of the ionizing background radiation, cloud diffuse emission and ionization physics, and statistical fluctuations. We use high-resolution observations of HI absorption towards quasars to derive improved models for the opacity of the intergalactic medium (IGM) and use these models to calculate the HI and HeII photoionization history in both optically-thin and self-shielded clouds, and the average line-blanketing contribution to HeII absorption. The derived ionization rate at z = 2-4, Gamma(HI) = (1-3)x10^-12 s^-1, is consistent with the ionizing background intensity inferred from the proximity effect, but it remains larger than that inferred by N-body hydrodynamical simulations of the Lya absorber distribution. The HeII observations are con- sistent with line blanketing from clouds with N(HI) > 10^12 cm^-2, although a contribution from a more diffuse IGM would help to explain the observed opacity. We compute the expected HeII optical depth and examine the sizable fluc- tuations that arise from variations in the cloud numbers and ionizing radiation field. We assess how HeII absorption constrains the intensity and spectrum of the ionizing radiation and the fractional contributions of the dominant sources (quasars and starburst galaxies). Finally, we demonstrate how high-resolution UV observations can distinguish between absorption from the diffuse IGM and the Lya forest clouds and determine the source of the ionizing background.

PKS 2155-304, the brightest BL Lac object in the ultraviolet sky, was monitored with the IUE satellite at ~1 hour time-resolution for ten nearly uninterrupted days in May 1994. The campaign, which was coordinated with EUVE, ROSAT, and ASCA monitoring, along with optical and radio observations from the ground, yielded the largest set of spectra and the richest short time scale variability information ever gathered for a blazar at UV wavelengths. The source flared dramatically during the first day, with an increase by a factor ~2.2 in an hour and a half. In subsequent days, the flux maintained a nearly constant level for ~5 days, then flared with ~35% amplitude for two days. The same variability was seen in both short- and long-wavelength IUE light curves, with zero formal lag (~

We present new FUSE and HST/STIS observations of two high Galactic latitude AGN that we use to measure the nuclear wind velocity of the Milky Way for the first time. We find high velocity C III & O VI at a heliocentric velocity of $+163 \pm 8 {\rm km s^{-1}}$ and C III & N V at $-105 \pm 14 {\rm km s^{-1}}$ toward PKS 2005–489 ( $l=350^{\circ}, b=-33^{\circ}$ ) and C III, C IV, & Si IV and C III & O VI toward Mrk 1383 ( $l=349^{\circ}, b=55^{\circ}$ ) at $+48 \pm 4 {\rm km s^{-1}}$ and $+94 \pm 7 {\rm km s^{-1}}$ , respectively. We have estimated the Galactocentric escape velocity of gas above the Galactic Centre along the PKS 2005–489 and Mrk 1383 sight-lines to be $\geq\,$ $215 \pm 35$ and $\geq\,$ $145 \pm 25 {\rm km s^{-1}}$ , respectively. Thus, we have detected both infalling and bound outflowing gas from the Galactic Centre, indicating that the Milky Way does not produce a starburst wind, but a bound Galactic “fountain” instead.

Effective methods of measuring supermassive black hole masses in active galactic nuclei (AGN) are of critical importance to studies of galaxy evolution. While there has been much success obtaining masses through reverberation mapping, the extensive observing time required by this method has limited the practicality of applying it to large samples at a variety of redshifts. This limitation highlights the need to estimate these masses using single-epoch spectroscopy of ultraviolet emission lines. We use ultraviolet spectra of 44 AGN from HST/COS, IUE, and FUSE of the CIV 1549, OVI 1035, OIII] 1664, HeII 1640, CII 1335, and MgII 2800 emission lines and explore their potential as tracers of the broad-line region and supermassive black hole mass. The higher S/N and better spectral resolution of the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on Hubble Space Telescope resolves AGN intrinsic absorption and produces more accurate line widths. From these, we test the viability of mass-scaling relationships based on line widths and luminosities and carry out a principal component analysis based on line luminosities, widths, skewness, and kurtosis. At L_{1450} < 10^{45} erg/s, the UV line luminosities correlate well with Hbeta, as does the 1450 Angstrom continuum luminosity. We find that CIV, OVI, and MgII can be used as reasonably accurate estimators of AGN black hole masses, while HeII and CII are uncorrelated., 2 column AASTeX preprint, 29 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables. The methods by which one characterizes the distribution of matter in cosmological simulations is intrinsically different from how one performs the same task observationally. In this paper, we make substantial steps towards comparing simulations and observations of the intergalactic medium (IGM) in a more sensible way. We present a pipeline that generates and fits synthetic QSO absorption spectra using sight lines cast through a cosmological simulation, and simultaneously identifies structure by directly analyzing the variations in HI and OVI number density. We compare synthetic absorption spectra with a less observationally motivated, but more straightforward density threshold-based method for finding absorbers. Our efforts focus on HI and OVI to better characterize the warm/hot intergalactic medium, a subset of the IGM that is challenging to conclusively identify observationally. We find that the two methods trace roughly the same quantities of HI and OVI above observable column density limits, but the synthetic spectra typically identify more substructure in absorbers. We use both methods to characterize HI and OVI absorber properties. We find that both integrated and differential column density distributions from both methods generally agree with observations. The distribution of Doppler parameters between the two methods are similar for Lya and compare reasonably with observational results, but while the two methods agree with each other with OVI systems, they both are systematically different from observations. We find a strong correlation between OVI baryon fraction and OVI column density. We have used the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) to obtain far-UV spectra of three closely-spaced QSO sight lines that probe the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of an edge-on spiral galaxy, ESO 157-49, at impact parameters of 74 and 93 kpc near its major axis and 172 kpc along its minor axis. H I Ly\alpha\ absorption is detected at the galaxy redshift in the spectra of all three QSOs, and metal lines of Si III, Si IV, and C IV are detected along the two major-axis sight lines. Photoionization models of these clouds suggest metallicities close to the galaxy metallicity, cloud sizes of ~1 kpc, and gas masses of ~10^4 solar masses. Given the high covering factor of these clouds, ESO 157-49 could harbor ~2x10^9 solar masses of warm CGM gas. We detect no metals in the sight line that probes the galaxy along its minor axis, but gas at the galaxy metallicity would not have detectable metal absorption with ionization conditions similar to the major-axis clouds. The kinematics of the major-axis clouds favor these being portions of a "galactic fountain" of recycled gas, while two of the three minor-axis clouds are constrained geometrically to be outflowing gas. In addition, one of our QSO sight lines probes a second more distant spiral, ESO 157-50, along its major axis at an impact parameter of 88 kpc.
