Abstract

We have performed the measurement of the 27Al(α, n) cross section at IFIN-HH for a range of energies from 2.5 to 5.2 MeV, using an array of 28 3He counters arranged in 3 concentric rings (ELIGANT-TN). Here we present the experimental setup and discuss the role of the 13C contamination which effects the measurements in the low-energy region. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy carried out before and after the experiment suggested an increase in the 13C concentration during the experiment.

Abstract

Detailed tests and analysis of ageing effects of high irradiation dose on Multi-Strip Multi-Gap Resistive Plate Counters based on low resistivity glass electrodes were performed. MSMGRPC efficiency and cluster size before irradiation are measured and compared with their values after irradiation in a high irradiation dose accessed at a multi-purpose irradiation facility of IFIN-HH based on $^{60}$Co source. Abstract

Zhu-Tokita-Takenouchi-Kim (ZTTK) syndrome is caused by de novo loss-of-function variants in the SON gene (MIM #617140). This multisystemic disorder is characterized by intellectual disability, seizures, abnormal brain imaging, variable dysmorphic features, and various congenital anomalies. The wide application and increasing accessibility of whole exome sequencing (WES) has helped to identify new cases of ZTTK syndrome over the last few years. To date, there have been approximately 45 cases reported in the literature. Here, we describe 15 additional individuals with variants in the SON gene, including those with missense variants bringing the total number of known cases to 60. We have reviewed the clinical and molecular data of these new cases and all previously reported cases to further delineate the most common as well as emerging clinical findings related to this syndrome. Furthermore, we aim to delineate any genotype–phenotype correlations specifically for a recurring pathogenic four base pair deletion (c.5753_5756del) along with discussing the impact of missense variants seen in the SON gene.

Abstract

The 70th year of the IAU has been marked not only by the Covid-19 pandemic but by the geopolitical tension between the United States and China. After almost four decades of cooperation, which began in shared opposition to Soviet Russia and a shared interest in China’s modernisation, the leaders of each country have become strident critics of the other. The escalating war of words has led to disruptions in trade, communications and visas and now threatens the vast and fruitful cooperation between universities and researchers. Much is at stake. Many US universities are in China, such as Stanford with its state-of-the-art centre at Peking University and NYU with a branch campus in Shanghai. Chinese universities benefit from visits in both directions, from bench-marking using American partner templates and from the return of US-trained doctoral graduates. US-China links in science are focused on crucial areas like biomedicine and epidemiology, planetary science and ecology, engineering, materials, energy, cybernetics.

The aim of this study was to investigate genetic variation as a factor in the development of renovascular hypertension in children. METHODS: In a cohort of 37 unrelated children from a single tertiary referral center, exome sequencing was performed. We assessed variants in recognized and suspected disease genes and searched for novel ones with a gene-based variant-burden analysis. RESULTS: In the majority of patients, exome sequencing could not identify causative variants. We found a pathogenic variant in a recognized associated disease gene in five patients (three pathogenic variants in NF1, one in ELN and a deletion of chromosome 7q11.23, consistent with Williams syndrome). In two other patients, (likely) pathogenic variants were found in putative renovascular hypertension genes (SMAD6 and GLA), with clinical implications for both. Ten additional patients carried variants of uncertain significance (VUS) in known (n = 4) or putative (n = 6) renovascular hypertension disease genes. Rare variant burden analysis yielded no further candidate genes. CONCLUSION: Genetic contributors, such as germline mutations in NF1, ELN, 7q11.23del were present in only 5 out of 37 (14%) children with renovascular hypertension. Twelve other children (32%) had potentially causal variants identified, including a pathogenic variant in SMAD6; a vasculopathy gene hitherto unknown to link with renovascular hypertension. Most importantly, our data show that exome sequencing can rarely identify the cause of renovascular hypertension in nonsyndromic children. We suggest that nongenetic factors or somatic genetic variation will play a more important role.

Contains fulltext : 204259.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access), BACKGROUND: Primary distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) is a rare disorder, and we aimed to gather data on treatment and long-term outcome. METHODS: We contacted paediatric and adult nephrologists through European professional organizations. Responding clinicians entered demographic, biochemical, genetic and clinical data in an online form. RESULTS: Adequate data were collected on 340 patients (29 countries, female 52%). Mutation testing had been performed on 206 patients (61%); pathogenic mutations were identified in 170 patients (83%). The median (range) presentation age was 0.5 (0-54) years and age at last follow-up was 11.0 (0-70.0) years. Adult height was slightly below average with a mean (SD score) of -0.57 (+/-1.16). There was an increased prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) Stage >/=2 in children (35%) and adults (82%). Nephrocalcinosis was reported in 88%. Nephrolithiasis was more common with SLC4A1 mutations (42% versus 21%). Thirty-six percent had hearing loss, particularly in ATP6V1B1 (88%). The median (interquartile range) prescribed dose of alkali (mEq/kg/day) was 1.9 (1.2-3.3). Adequate metabolic control (normal plasma bicarbonate and normocalciuria) was achieved in 158 patients (51%), more commonly in countries with higher gross domestic product (67% versus 23%), and was associated with higher height and estimated glomerular filtration rate. CONCLUSION: Long-term follow-up from this large dRTA cohort shows an overall favourable outcome with normal adult height for most and no patient with CKD Stage 5. However, 82% of adult patients have CKD Stages 2-4. Importance of adequate metabolic control was highlighted by better growth and renal function but was achieved in only half of patients.

Abstract

This paper describes a device capable of performing the following tasks: it samples and decodes the composite video analog TV signal, it encodes the resulting RGB data into a MPEG-4 stream and sends it over a WiMAX link. On the other end of the link a similar device receives the WiMAX signal, in either TDD or FDD mode, decodes the MPEG data and displays it on the LCD display. The device can be a hand held device, such as a mobile phone or a PDA. The algorithms for the analog TV, WiMAX physical layer, WiMAX MAC and the MPEG encoder/decoder are executed entirely in software in real time, using the Sandbridge Technologies’ low power SB3011 digital signal processor. The SB3011 multithreaded digital signal processor includes four DSP cores with eight threads each, and one ARM processor. Abstract

In order to support a broad dynamic range and a high degree of precision, many of 3D renderings fundamental algorithms have been traditionally performed in floating-point. However, fixed-point data representation is preferable over floatingpoint representation in graphics applications on embedded devices where performance is of paramount importance, while the dynamic range and precision requirements are limited due to the small display sizes (current PDA’s are 640 × 480 (VGA), while cell-phones are even smaller). In this paper we analyze the efficiency of a CORDIC-augmented Sandbridge processor when implementing a vertex processor in software using fixed-point arithmetic. A CORDIC-based solution for vertex processing exhibits a number of advantages over classical Multiply-and-Acumulate solutions. First, since a single primitive is used to describe the computation, the code can easily be vectorized and multithreaded, and thus fits the major Sandbridge architectural features. Second, since a CORDIC iteration consists of only a shift operation followed by an addition, the computation may be deeply pipelined. Initially, we outline the Sandbridge architecture extension which encompasses a CORDIC functional unit and the associated instructions. Then, we consider rigid-body rotation, lighting, exponentiation, vector normalization, and perspective division (which are some of the most important data-intensive 3D graphics kernels) and propose a scheme to implement them on the CORDIC-augmented Sandbridge processor. Abstract

Radiomics, a subdomain of artificial intelligence, consists in extracting a large volume of data from all medical imaging techniques and correlating them with clinical data in order to build predictive and prognostic models. Radiomics is related to radiogenomics that correlates genetic mutations and molecular and biological characteristics of tissues with information extracted from medical imaging. Both are state-of-the-art fields of translational biomedical research. The ability to predict early patient survival and response to treatment, but also the capacity to identify tumor subtypes non-invasively, could make radiomics a key player with an essential role in personalized oncology. In head and neck cancer radiotherapy, radiomic algorithms can predict not only the response to radiochemotherapy or induction chemotherapy but also the need for planning through adaptive radiotherapy (ART). Radiomics can also predict the risk of severe toxicities, especially that of xerostomia. Given the benefit that a de-escalation of treatment can bring in selected cases to improve the quality of life, radiomics is expected to be part of the therapeutic decision for head and neck cancers in the near future, and may help identify cases where de-escalation of multimodal therapy will not jeopardize the therapeutic benefit. Abstract

Innovation in university learning and teaching processes comes together with the interweaving of multiple social and cultural changes that have progressively called into question the structure of higher education systems (Trow 2007; Stes 2008, Stes et al, 2010; Mulryan-Kyne, 2010). Universities are being asked to increase the knowledge and skills of a population whose schooling rates are growing progressively and whose training needs are becoming more and more complex. Moreover, universities are also being called upon to respond to a constantly changing scenario. For the above-mentioned reasons, university curricula are increasingly incorporating issues related to citizenship (Owens et al, 2018; Aydin, 2014) and transversal skills (Wheat et al, 2018). According to this frame there are several localized strategic and crucial areas in which the awareness and networking of universities at an international level towards innovation of learning and teaching practices can generate a significative societal impact. In this paper we would like to concentrate on three examples based on the University of Bologna experience. Initial and in-service teachers training (from pre-school to secondary) is one of these pivotal areas. Among the societal challenges faced by education we now have to cope with the issue of training new citizenship skills for sustainable development in a society increasingly influenced by scientific and technological development. Public engagement, as well as science education, together with ethics, gender and governance, also require transversal attention and new research efforts. Furthermore, there are two strategic, crucial areas where universities can make a difference in supporting lifelong learning and fostering fairness, diversity and inclusion namely corporate education, with upskilling and reskilling of workers, and providing higher education to prisoners, reaffirming HEI aspirations to fully guarantee access to studies as an inalienable right of the human being.

Abstract

Nanoparticle (NP)-based solutions for oncotherapy promise an improved efficiency of the anticancer response, as well as higher comfort for the patient. The current advancements in cancer treatment based on nanotechnology exploit the ability of these systems to pass biological barriers to target the tumor cell, as well as tumor cell organelles. In particular, iron oxide NPs are being clinically employed in oncological management due to this ability. When designing an efficient anti-cancer therapy based on NPs, it is important to know and to modulate the phenomena which take place during the interaction of the NPs with the tumor cells, as well as the normal tissues. In this regard, our review is focused on highlighting different approaches to studying the internalization patterns of iron oxide NPs in simple and complex 2D and 3D in vitro cell models, as well as in living tissues, in order to investigate the functionality of an NP-based treatment.

47. How Do Quantitative Tissue Imaging Outcomes in Acute Ischemic Stroke Relate to Clinical Outcomes?

Abstract

Background and Purpose: Infarct volume and other imaging markers are increasingly used as surrogate measures for clinical outcome in acute ischemic stroke research, but how improvements in these imaging surrogates translate into better clinical outcomes is currently unclear. We investigated how changes in infarct volume at 24 hours alter the probability of achieving good clinical outcome (modified Rankin Scale [mRS] 0-2)., Methods: Data are from endovascular thrombectomy patients from the randomized controlled ESCAPE-NA1 (Efficacy and Safety of Nerinetide for the Treatment of Acute Ischaemic Stroke) trial. Infarct volume at 24 hours was manually segmented on non-contrast computed tomography or diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Probabilities of achieving good outcome based on infarct volume were obtained from a multivariable logistic regression model. The probability of good outcome was plotted against infarct volume using linear spline regression., Results: A total of 1,099 patients were included in the analysis (median final infarct volume 24.9 mL [interquartile range: 6.6-92.2]). The relationship between total infarct volume and good outcome probability was nearly linear for infarct volumes between 0 mL and 250 mL. In this range, a 10% increase in the probability of achieving mRS 0-2 required a decrease in infarct volume of approximately 34.0 mL (95% confidence interval: -32.5 to -35.6). At infarct volumes above 250 mL, the probability of achieving mRS 0-2 probability was near zero. The relationships of tissue-specific infarct volumes and parenchymal hemorrhage volume generally showed similar patterns, although variability was high., Conclusion: There seems to be a near-linear association between total infarct volume and probability of achieving good outcome for infarcts up to 250 mL, whereas patients with infarct volumes greater than 250 mL are highly unlikely to have a favorable outcome.

According to current predictions, one-fifth of all Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime. Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) most commonly occurs in the head and neck region, which is the area of the body with the highest level of sun exposure. High-risk head and neck cSCC (HNcSCC) is a broad category with numerous high-risk factors that are associated with unfavorable results. In cSCC staging systems, clinical and tumor traits that are likely to result in poor outcomes are identified. Metastasis occurs in ~2.5% of patients with cSCC, most often in the local lymph nodes, and there is some indication that lymph node metastasis has a distinct pattern based on the tumor site. Current findings on tumor molecular targets have suggested the use of systemic treatments, particularly immunotherapy (such as cemiplimab, pembrolizumab and nivolumab), over radiotherapy or chemotherapy for this type of metastasis. However, when used simultaneously with immunotherapy, radiotherapy may be beneficial in the treatment of metastatic HNcSCC by improving the efficacy of immunotherapy. The present review aims to assess the existing literature on metastatic HNcSCC pathways and treatment options, in order to define current and future directions. Notably, there is an urgent need to identify patients who may benefit from local or systemic cancer treatments. 49. Ethical implications of developing RNA-based therapies for cardiovascular disorders.

Abstract

The awareness concerning RNA-based therapies was boosted significantly after the successful development of COVID-19 vaccines. However, they can potentially lead to significant advances in other areas of medicine, such as oncology or chronic diseases. In recent years, there has been an exponential increase in the number of RNA-based therapies that were evaluated as potential treatments for cardiovascular disorders. One of the areas that was not explicitly assessed about these therapies is represented by their overall ethical framework. Some studies evaluate ethical issues of RNA-based treatments in general or targeting specific disorders (especially neurodegenerative) or interventions for developing RNA-based vaccines. Much less information is available regarding the ethical issues associated with developing these therapeutic strategies for cardiovascular disorders, which is the main aim of this study.
