Research has been conducted on 2-acyl-4-aminopyridines. The preparation of these compounds and their use as catalysts for the hydroxyl-directed methanolysis of alpha-hydroxy esters are discussed.

Research concerning the ability of polycytidylate to direct and catalyze the synthesis of oligoguanylates from guanosine 5'-phosphate 2-methylimizadolide is discussed. Results demonstrate that small amounts of isomeric dimers are formed slowly in the absence of poly(C).

Kinetic studies of the reaction of different aliphatic amines with phosphoimidazolide-activated of guanosine and cytidine (ImPN) derivatives reveal that kinetic barrier for the reaction increases with the size of the alkyl group in the aliphatic secondary amines. Kinetic data support the higher reactivity of the primary amino groups than the secondary amino groups toward ImPN. The slow reactivity accounts for the absence of substitution products of the secondary amino groups of the polyamines.

A study was conducted on hydroxyl-directed reactions in organic synthesis and the development of new, selective hydroxyl-directed catalysts which contain separate binding and catalytic sites. It describes the mechanism of action of 2-formyl-4-pyrrolidinopyridine, where an aldehyde at the 2-position of the pyridine serves as the binding site, and probes the validity of the design features of this catalyst including an inference of the role of the aldehyde and of the pyridine nitrogen in the catalytic cycle.
