Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is an important indicator of treatment effectiveness. An unhealthy lifestyle can have a negative impact on quality of life. This study aimed to investigate changes in health-related lifestyle over time after surgery for colorectal cancer and their impact on HRQOL. Healthy lifestyle habits examined in this study included physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, fruit and vegetable intake, sleep, and obesity levels. An observational study design was used. A total of 75 post-operative colorectal cancer patients were recruited from two medical centers in Taiwan. Data were collected through structured questionnaires. Mean HRQOL scores at 1, 3, and 5 months after discharge were 102.5 (SD = 18.8), 102.9 (SD = 20.1), and 103.0 (SD = 18.9), respectively. A generalized estimating equation analysis showed that alcohol consumption ( p = 0.009), fruit and vegetable intake ( p = 0.020), physical activity ( p = 0.023), sleep quality ( p < 0.001), and obesity ( p = 0.035) were important predictors of post-operative quality of life in patients with colorectal cancer. The impact of smoking on HRQOL did not reach statistical significance. Colorectal cancer patients tend to have better HRQOL after surgery if they stay physically active, eat enough fruits and vegetables, and sleep well.

Background: Neuroendocrine neoplasms of the gallbladder (GB-NENs) are a rare group of histologically heterogeneous tumors, and surgical resection of the primary tumor is the mainstream treatment at the moment. The current study aimed to establish and validate novel nomograms for patients with GB-NENs undergoing primary tumor resection to predict the 6-, 12-, and 18-month overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS)., Methods: Clinicopathological information of patients with GB-NENs undergoing primary tumor resection between 2004 and 2018 was derived from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Candidate prognostic factors were selected by Cox regression analyses, and the nomograms were constructed. Finally, concordance index (C-index), calibration plot, area under the curve from the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), and decision curve analysis (DCA) were utilized to assess the effective performance of the nomograms., Results: A total of 221 patients with GB-NENs undergoing resection were enrolled in this retrospective study. Using the Cox regression analyses, age, pathological classification, tumor size, and SEER stage were identified as the independent prognostic factors of patients with GB-NENs undergoing resection, and nomograms were constructed. The C-indexes of OS and CSS in training dataset were 0.802 (95% CI: 0.757-0.848) and 0.846 (95% CI: 0.798-0.895), while those of internal validation dataset were 0.862 (95% CI: 0.802-0.922) and 0.879 (95% CI: 0.824-0.934), respectively., Conclusions: Taken together, the nomograms are accurate enough to predict the prognostic factors of GB-NEN patients undergoing resection, allowing for treatment decision-making and clinical monitoring for future clinical work.

Both focused extracorporeal shockwave (f-ESWT) and radial extracorporeal shockwave therapy (r-ESWT) can alleviate symptoms in patients with knee osteoarthritis, but no trials have directly compared f-ESWT with r-ESWT for knee osteoarthritis. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of f-ESWT and r-ESWT on knee osteoarthritis. Forty-two patients with bilateral knee osteoarthritis were randomly assigned to receive three sessions of either f-ESWT or r-ESWT at 1-week intervals. The patients were evaluated at baseline and at 4 and 8 weeks after the final treatment. The primary outcome was the change in pain intensity, as measured on the visual analog scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes included the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), range of motion of the knee joint, and the 6-minute walk test. At the end of 4 weeks, the VAS score was substantially reduced in both groups (f-ESWT, -4.5 ± 2.5 points; r-ESWT, -2.6 ± 2.0 points), with a greater reduction in the f-ESWT group. Both groups showed significant improvement in secondary outcomes; however, the f-ESWT group yielded greater improvement in the VAS score, WOMAC score, and 6-minute walk test. Our results showed that f-ESWT was more effective than r-ESWT in improving pain and physical function in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

In this work, we study the electronic structure, the effective mass, and the optical properties of the MoSSe/InS van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) by first-principles calculations. The results indicate that the MoSSe/InS vdWH is an indirect band gap semiconductor and has type-Ⅱ band alignment in which the electrons and holes located at the InS and the MoSSe side, respectively. The band edge position, the band gap and the optical absorption of the MoSSe/InS vdWH can be tuned when biaxial strains are applied. In addition, compared with MoSSe and InS monolayers, the optical absorption of the MoSSe/InS vdWH is improved both in the visible and the ultraviolet regions. Non-ferrous metal smelting activities have always been considered as one of the foremost anthropogenic sources of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). The enrichment factor (EF) and pollution load index (PLI) were used to evaluate the pollution level of soil PTEs; positive matrix factorization (PMF), correlation analysis, and geostatistics were utilized to quantify the sources of soil PTEs; and potential ecological risk (PER) and human health risk (HHR) of different sources from farmland, construction land, and natural land were quantifiably determined via combined PTE sources with PER and HHR assessment models. Taking the smelting area of Daye City as an example, the evaluation results of EF and PLI showed that the soil PTE pollution in the study area was serious, especially Cd and Cu. And four sources were quantitatively allocated as agricultural practices (12.14%), traffic emissions (23.07%), natural sources (33.46%), and industrial activities (31.33%). For PER, industrial activities were the largest contributor to PER, accounting for 55.66%, 56.30%, and 55.36% of farmland, construction land, and natural land, respectively, and Cd was the most dangerous element. In terms of HHR, industrial activities were also the cardinal contributors under the three land use types. Children were exposed to serious non-carcinogenic risks under three land use patterns and slight carcinogenic risk in construction land (1.06E - 04). Significantly, the carcinogenic risk of children in farmland (9.06 × 10 -5 ) was very close to the threshold (1 × 10 -4 ), which requires attention. Both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk for adults were all at acceptable levels. The health risks (carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks) of children from four different sources were distinctly higher than those of adults. Consequently, strict management and control of industrial activities should be given priority, and the management of agricultural practices should not be ignored., (© 2022. PMN (primary membranous nephropathy) is the most prevalent source of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome, which further progressed to ESRD (end-stage renal disease) in non-diabetic adults worldwide. Autoantibodies circulating against podocyte membrane proteins PLA2R1 and THSD7A are present in approximately 75-80% of incidents. Furthermore, a research presented an unusual case of IgG4-RD correlated with elevated serum levels of calcium concluded that renal irregularities have been preceded and triggered by hypercalcemia. In-addition, previous research also indicates an elevated amount of calcium in the blood of PMN patients. However, we also found conflicting evidence from previous studies showing that autoantibodies that suppress the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) induce a high level of calcium in some cases of IgG4RD. Notably, the calcium ion plays a critical function not only as intracellular signaling molecule but binds extracellular receptor activity to intracellular events. Moreover, the raise in intracellular calcium levels during PMN is known as a crucial event involved in the activation of numerous nucleases, proteases and implicitly facilitates the release of prostaglandins, cytokines and superoxide radicals capable of causing cell damage and death. Thus, the precise mechanism of the PMN disease to renal failure is not fully clear and the disease incidence differs among patients. Chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonates (Cl-PFESAs), are ubiquitous alternatives to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), a widely used poly- and perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS). Despite in vivo and in vitro evidence of metabolic toxicity, no study has explored associations of Cl-PFESAs concentrations with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a human population. To help address this data gap, we quantified 32 PFAS, including 2 PFOS alternative Cl-PFESAs (6:2 and 8:2 Cl-PFESAs) in serum from 1228 adults participating in the cross-sectional Isomers of C8 Health Project in China study. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of MetS and its various components were estimated using individual PFAS as a continuous or categorical predictor in multivariate regression models. The association between the overall mixture of PFAS and MetS was examined using probit Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR-P). Greater serum PFAS concentrations were associated with higher odds of MetS and demonstrated a statistically significant dose-response trend (P for trend < 0.001). For example, each ln-unit (ng/mL) increase in serum 6:2 Cl-PFESA was associated with a higher prevalence of MetS (OR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.25, 1.85). MetS was also 2.26 (95% CI: 1.59, 3.23) times more common in the highest quartile of serum 6:2 Cl-PFESA concentration than the lowest, and particularly high among women (OR = 6.41, 95% CI: 3.65, 11.24). The BKMR-P analysis showed a positive association between the overall mixture of measured PFAS and the odds of MetS, but was only limited to women. While our results suggest that exposure to Cl-PFESAs was associated with MetS, additional longitudinal studies are needed to more definitively address the potential health concerns of these PFOS alternatives., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. To make pollution evaluation of potentially hazardous elements in the soil more accurately, the regional geochemical baseline concentrations of eight potentially hazardous elements (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb) were established in Huilai County using cumulative frequency distribution curves. Then, the pollution load index and enrichment factor were applied to estimate the contamination levels, based on these geochemical baseline concentrations. The results suggested that topsoil was moderately polluted by potentially hazardous elements, while Cd pollution in the construction land and As pollution in the farmland was relatively severe. The possible sources of eight potentially hazardous elements were analyzed by correlation analysis, geostatistics and positive matrix factorization. Four sources have been determined and apportioned, namely industrial activities, natural sources, agricultural practices, and traffic emissions. Combining the health risk assessment with the source profiles, the health risks quantified from four sources were estimated under farmland, construction land, and woodland. The results showed that agricultural practices were the most main source of non-cancer and cancer risks under woodland and farmland for adults; industrial activities were the most main source of non-cancer and cancer risks under construction land for adults. Children's health risks, both carcinogenic risk and non-carcinogenic risk, were greater than adults, and the health risk trends of adults and children showed similarities. Therefore, agricultural practices under woodland and farmland should be controlled and managed as a priority, while industrial activities should be given priority to control and management under construction land., (Copyright © 2020 The Authors. Background: Most stroke cases lead to serious mental and physical disabilities, such as dementia and sensory impairment. Chronic diseases are contributory risk factors for stroke. However, few studies considered the transition behaviors of stroke to dementia associated with chronic diseases and environmental risks., Objective: This study aims to develop a prognosis model to address the issue of stroke transitioning to dementia associated with environmental risks., Design: This cohort study used the data from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan., Setting: Healthcare data were obtained from more than 25 million enrollees and covered over 99% of Taiwan's entire population., Participants: In this study, 10,627 stroke patients diagnosed from 2000 to 2010 in Taiwan were surveyed., Methods: A Cox regression model and corresponding semi-Markov process were constructed to evaluate the influence of risk factors on stroke, corresponding dementia, and their transition behaviors., Main Outcome Measure: Relative risk and sojourn time were the main outcome measure., Results: Multivariate analysis showed that certain environmental risks, medication, and rehabilitation factors highly influenced the transition of stroke from a chronic disease to dementia. This study also highlighted the high-risk populations of stroke patients against the environmental risk factors; the males below 65 years old were the most sensitive population., Conclusion: Experiments showed that the proposed semi-Markovian model outperformed other benchmark diagnosis algorithms (i.e., linear regression, decision tree, random forest, and support vector machine), with a high R 2 of 90%. The proposed model also facilitated an accurate prognosis on the transition time of stroke from chronic diseases to dementias against environmental risks and rehabilitation factors.

Based on the density functional theory, the electronic and optical properties of pristine monolayer PdSe 2 with Pd or Se vacancy-defect are investigated. Our results show that the Se defect is energetically more favorable than that of Pd defect. The band gap reduces, and some new midgap states appear after the Pd or Se defects are introduced. In terms of the optical properties, the prominent anisotropic characters are remained. The obvious new peaks of the dielectric constant appear after introducing defects. The light absorption in the visible energy range expands based on the appearance of the midgap states induced by the Pd or Se defects. The changes of the refractive index and reflectivity are similar with those of the dielectric constants and the light absorption. The energy loss spectrum of the PdSe 2 with Pd or Se defects is obviously different, which can be used to identify different defects in PdSe 2 . These findings provide effective strategies to tune electronic and optical properties of monolayer PdSe 2 by introducing defects.

An association may exist between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and depression. However, results regarding this association are inconsistent, and the direction of the association between OSA and depression remains unknown. Therefore, we used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to investigate the bidirectional association between OSA and depression.A total of 6427 OSA patients and 32,135 age and sex-matched control subjects were enrolled to analyze the risk of depression among patients with OSA, where 27,073 patients with depression and 135,365 control subjects were enrolled to address the risk of OSA among patients with depression. All subjects were followed to identify their outcomes of interest from January 1, 1997 to December 31, 2012.Cox proportional-hazards models, after adjusting for potential confounders, demonstrated that patients with OSA had an increased risk (adjusted hazard ratio 2.48, 95% confidence interval 2.20-2.79) of developing depression, whereas those with depression were associated with an increased risk of future OSA (adjusted hazard ratio 2.30, 95% confidence interval 2.11-2.50).Our results suggested that a strong bidirectional relationship exists between OSA and depression, with each disease influencing the development of the other. Health providers are recommended to ensure the early detection and management of depression among patients with OSA and vice versa.

Background: Medical treatments for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are often disappointing. A colonic irrigation system, the Ashong colonic irrigation apparatus (ACIA), was designed as a patient-administered device for defecation disorders. This pilot study evaluated the efficacy and safety of ACIA for IBS., Methods: Eighteen patients, 12 with constipation-dominant IBS (IBS-C) and 6 with diarrhea-dominant IBS (IBS-D) group, were studied. Patients were randomized into treatments of 1-4 weeks. Colonic irrigation was performed twice daily for 6 consecutive days per week. To determine the response to treatment, bowel movement frequency, stool consistency, abdominal pain, patient satisfaction with bowel movements, and distress/discomfort due to symptoms were assessed., Results: The scores of abdominal pain (p < 0.001), satisfaction (p < 0.001), and distress/discomfort (p < 0.001) improved significantly. The frequency of bowel movements in the IBS-C group increased from 1.68 to 3.78 times per week (p < 0.001). The occurrence of Bristol Stool Scale type 1 and 2 stool passage decreased from 45 to 13 % (p = 0.009) in the IBS-C group and type 6 and 7 stools decreased from 62 to 28 % (p = 0.005) in the IBS-D group. Only mild adverse events occurred, and all patients completed treatment., Conclusions: Colonic irrigation with ACIA is safe and can improve abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea associated with IBS. Patients were more satisfied with their bowel movements and found their symptoms were less disturbing. Larger studies on long-term efficacy and quality of life and on placebo effects are needed.

There is growing evidence that vitamin D (VitD) plays a role in the pathophysiological mechanism of every patient undergoing hemodialysis, and this role is significantly altered in a microinflammatory state. However, it is unclear whether supplementation dosage or route of administration should be altered due to this state. Thus, the objective of our mini review and meta-analysis was to re-consider supplementation of VitD in HD patients exhibiting micro-inflammatory state. Pubmed, Web of Science and Google Scholar were searched up to January 19, 2016. We included studies that evaluated supplementation in HD patients with micro-inflammatory state. One reviewer extracted data and one reviewer verified the data accuracy. We qualitatively summarized the main results and meta-analyzed data on comparable outcomes across studies. The main outcome measures were serum levels of VitD. Ten eligible studies were published between 2002 and 2016, involving a total 1,239 patients. Average vintage of hemodialysis was 35.36 (±31.08) months. We identified a high degree of clinical diversity (interventions and outcomes) and methodological heterogeneity (sample size and risk of bias) in included trials. The studies we reviewed provide some weak evidence to support VitD supplementation in patients on hemodialysis exhibiting micro-inflammatory state. We recommend that future trials focus on our main outcome measures (that is variable comparable across studies).

This study characterized Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C strains in China in order to establish their genetic relatedness and describe the use of multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat (VNTR) analysis (MLVA) to provide useful epidemiological information. A total of 215 N. meningitidis serogroup C strains, obtained from 2003 to 2012 in China, were characterized by MLVA with different published schemes as well as multilocus sequence typing. (i) Based on the MLVA scheme with a combination of five highly variable loci, 203 genotypes were identified; this level of discrimination supports its use for resolving closely related isolates. (ii) Based on a combination of ten low variable loci, clear phylogenetic relationships were established within sequence type complexes. In addition, there was evidence of microevolution of VNTR loci over the decade as strain lineages spread from Anhui to other provinces, the more distant the provinces from Anhui, the higher the genetic variation.

Ga2O3 photodetectors with interdigitated electrodes have been designed and fabricated, and the Ga2O3 area exposed to illumination acts as the active layer of the photodetector, while the area covered by Au interdigital electrode provide an arena for carrier multiplication. The photodetectors show a maximum responsivity at around 255 nm and a cutoff wavelength of 260 nm, which lies in the solar-blind region. The responsivity of the photodetector reaches 17 A/W when the bias voltage is 20 V, which corresponds to a quantum efficiency of 8228%, amongst the best value ever reported in Ga2O3 film based solar-blind photodetectors.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of propofol pretreatment on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI) and the role of the phosphoinositide-3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt) pathway in this procedure. Survival was determined 48 h after LPS injection. At 1 h after LPS challenge, the lung wet- to dry-weight ratio was examined, and concentrations of protein, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were determined using the bicinchoninic acid method or ELISA. Lung injury was assayed via lung histological examination. PI3K and p-Akt expression levels in the lung tissue were determined by Western blotting. Propofol pretreatment prolonged survival, decreased the concentrations of protein, TNF-α, and IL-6 in BALF, attenuated ALI, and increased PI3K and p-Akt expression in the lung tissue of LPS-challenged rats, whereas treatment with wortmannin, a PI3K/Akt pathway specific inhibitor, blunted this effect. Our study indicates that propofol pretreatment attenuated LPS-induced ALI, partly by activation of the PI3K/Akt pathway.

Concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Ni) were measured in the foodstuffs, house dust, underground/drinking water, and soil from an electronic waste (e-waste) area in South China. Elevated concentrations of these potentially toxic metals were observed in the samples but not in drinking water. The health risks for metal exposure via food consumption, dust ingestion, and drinking water were evaluated for local residents. For the average residents in the e-waste area, the non-carcinogenic risks arise predominantly from rice (hazard index=3.3), vegetables (2.2), and house dust (1.9) for adults, while the risks for young children are dominated by house dust (15). Drinking water may provide a negligible contribution to risk. However, local residents who use groundwater as a water supply source are at high non-carcinogenic risk. The potential cancer risks from oral intake of Pb are 8×10(-5) and 3×10(-4) for average adults and children, and thus groundwater would have a great potential to induce cancer (5×10(-4) and 1×10(-3)) in a highly exposed population. Based on ab initio theory and nonequilibrium Green's function method, the effect of stretch or contraction on the rectification in diblock co-oligomer molecular diodes is investigated theoretically. Interestingly, an inversion of rectifying direction induced by stretching or contracting the molecular junctions, which is closely related to the number of the pyrimidinyl-phenyl units, is proposed. The analysis of the molecular projected self-consistent Hamiltonian and the evolution of the frontier molecular orbitals as well as transmission coefficients under external biases gives an inside view of the observed results. It reveals that the asymmetric molecular level shift and asymmetric evolution of orbital wave functions under biases are competitive mechanisms for rectification. The stretching or contracting induced inversion of the rectification is due to the conversion of the dominant mechanism. This work suggests a feasible technique to manipulate the rectification performance in molecular diodes by use of the mechanically controllable method.

Objective: To characterize the meningococcal strains isolated from cases and close contacts with meningococcal disease associated with an outbreak in a jail in May 2010 by investigating the national distribution of hyperinvasive ST-4821 serogroup C clone associated with this outbreak., Methods: The cases were described based on the clinical symptoms and laboratory results. Pharyngeal swabs were cultured for N. meningitidis from men in the jail. Meningococcal isolates were identified by serogrouping, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multilocus sequence typing (MLST), respectively. Four hundred and sixteen serogroup C N. meningitidis strains were collected from 27 provinces between 2003 and 2010 for a nationwide survey and analyzed by PFGE and MLST., Results: Three persons in a jail system were infected with invasive N. meningitidis serogroup C. All isolates tested had matching PFGE patterns and belonged to the multilocus sequence type (ST) 4821 clonal complex. All 47 N. meningitidis strains were identified from the pharyngeal swabs of 166 peoples in the jail, and 26 of them belonged to ST-4821 serogroup C clone, and 90.14% (375/416) serogroup C strains identified in the nationwide survey belonged to the ST-4821 complex. The ST-4821 serogroup C clone was spread nationwide, distributed in 24 provinces, especially in eastern provinces between 2003 and 2010., Conclusion: Endemic transmission and carriage rate of ST-4821 serogroup C clone are high in this jail system. We analyzed the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in human hair collected from an electronic waste (e-waste) recycling area in southern China and compared their composition profiles and chiral signatures to those of workplace and domestic dust. The PCB concentrations showed significant age dependence in dismantling workers' hair but not in residents' hair. Among residents, PCB concentrations decreased in the following order: elderly people>students>pre-school children>adults. The PCB homologue and congener profiles of the workers' hair were similar to those of the workplace dust. However, the PCB homologue profile of the residents' hair was clearly different from that of the domestic dust. The chiral congener CB95 generally exhibited a racemic or near-racemic composition in both hair and dust, with enantiomer fractions (EFs) ranging from 0.485 to 0.525 in hair and from 0.479 to 0.504 in dust. The EFs of CB132 in dust (0.477-0.513) were closer to a racemic chiral signature than those in hair (0.378-0.521), but this difference was not significant. Our results suggest that the chiral signature of PCBs may be a better tool than the PCB composition profile for identifying the external and internal sources of organic contaminants in human hair. Further measurements of chiral PCB signatures in hair and blood from the same individuals are needed to identify the external and internal sources of PCBs in human hair., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are of great environmental concern due to bioaccumulation in different food chains. Trophodynamics of PBDEs in freshwater food chain is an important criterion for assessing their ecological risk. In the study, PBDEs were analyzed in sixteen aquatic species collected from Baiyangdian Lake, North China. The concentrations of nine PBDE congeners (BDE-28, -47, -66, -99, -100, -85, -153, -154, and -183) in aquatic organisms ranged from 3.4 to 160.2ng/g lipid weight. BDE-47 was the predominant PBDE congener in most samples except for river snails and swan mussels. BDE-209 was detected in 50% of biota samples, which indicated the bioavailability of BDE209. Correlation between lipid-normalized concentrations of PBDEs and trophic levels determined by stable isotope nitrogen technologies confirmed that PBDEs were biomagnified in the freshwater food chain. The trophic magnification factors (TMFs) ranged from 1.3 to 2.1 for PBDE congeners, greater than one, indicating the biomagnification potential for the PBDE congeners in the freshwater food chain. The relationship between TMFs and Log K(ow) (octanol-water partition coefficient) indicated that the phenomenon of trophic magnification for lowly brominated congeners was obvious in the freshwater food chain.

An efficient system was developed, and several variables tested, for generating a large-scale insertional-mutagenesis population of rice. The most important feature in this improved Ac/Ds tagging system is that one can conveniently carry out large-scale screening in the field and select transposants at the seedling stage. Rice was transformed with a plasmid that includes a Basta-resistance gene (bar). After the Ds element is excised during transposition, bar becomes adjacent to the ubiquitin promoter, and the rice plant becomes resistant to the herbicide Basta. In principle, one can plant up to one million plants in the field and select those plants that survive after spraying with Basta. To test the utility of this system, 4 Ds starter lines were crossed with 14 different Ac plants, and many transposants were successfully identified after planting 134,285 F2 plants in the field. Over 2,800 of these transposants were randomly chosen for PCR analysis, and the results fully confirmed the reliability of the field screening procedure.

This article reports the difference between neuralgic amyotrophy and neuropathy caused by chemotherapy and radiation treatment which manifested with severe shoulder pain followed by marked weakness of bilateral upper arms and involvement of cranial nerves. A 62-year-old man presented with acute severe neuropathic pain at the left shoulder, bilateral shoulder weakness, hoarseness of voice from vocal cord palsy, and respiratory insufficiency from left diaphragm palsy, which all occurred sequentially over a 1-month period. The diagnosis of neuralgic amyotrophy was supported and differentiated from tumor-induced and radiation-induced neuropathy by clinical presentation, electrophysiologic and imaging studies. Unlike previous reports of the onset of neuralgic amyotrophy being associated with initiation of radiation treatment in cancer patients, this report demonstrates that neuralgic amyotrophy can occur at any point of the malignant disease process after radiation and chemotherapy.

A rice pse(t) (premature senescence, tentatively) mutant line, was isolated from 4,500 independent T-DNA inserted transgenic lines. The symptoms of premature senescence appeared more severely than those of the control plants (Zhonghua 11, japonica) at the last development stage. To characterize the mutant and provide basic information on the candidate genes by mapping to a physical region of 220-kb, experiments were carried out in two phytotrons under controlled temperature of 24 degrees C and 28 degrees C, respectively. The content of chlorophyll, soluble protein and MDA (malondialdehyde), net photosynthesis, the antioxidant enzyme activities of SOD (superoxide dismuase) (EC 1.15.1.1) and POD (peroxidase) (EC 1.11.1.7) and the peptidase activities of leaves were measured from top to bottom according to the leaf positions at the flowering stage. Compared with the control plant, the mutant showed the following characteristics: (1) Higher net photosynthesis rate (P(n)) appeared in the 1st and 2nd leaves, contents of chlorophyll and soluble protein were also higher in the 1st leaf; (2) The activities of SOD, POD and peptidase were higher according to the leaf position from top to bottom; (3) The symptom of premature senescence was accelerated in the mutant at 28 degrees C treatment. The MDA content and the SOD and POD activities between the 24 degrees C and 28 degrees C treatment mutants were not significantly different. Content of chlorophyll and soluble protein of leaves mutant decreased rapidly at 28 degrees C treatment. The results show that pse(t) is sensitive to high temperature. The probable function of PSE(T) is discussed.
