POTENCIA - Abstract

The reaction $e^+e^−→e^+e^−π^0π^0$ has been analyzed using 97pb$^{−1}$ of data taken with the Crystal Ball detector at the DESY $e^−e^+$ storage ring DORIS II at beam energies around 5.3 GeV. For the first time we have measured the cross section for $γγ→π^0π^0$ for π0π0 mvariant masses ranging from threshold to about 2 GeV. We measure an approximately flat cross section of about 10 nb for W=$mπ^0π^0

7 pp. (1990)., We have searched for axion and light Higgs boson production in the channel $ϒ (1S)$ → $(a^0 or h^0) + γ$, where the non-interacting axion a0 and the Higgs boson $h^0$ do not decay in the detector. We find no evidence for an axion and give an upper limit,$ Br(ϒ (1S) → a^0γ) < 4.0 × 10^{−5} (90% CL)$, for long-lived axions. Combining our limit with the previous search in J/ψ decays, we are able to rule out the axion in the standard model with first order QCD corrections. Our $ϒ (1S)$ data also rule out a Higgs boson with mass mh < 86 MeV.

- Abstract
The risks and costs of the present method of visualizing the coronary arteries have limited the use of coronary angiography in long-term serial studies needed to establish the natural history of coronary atherosclerosis and its response to interventions. A less invasive method, in which the contrast agent is administered intravenously, has been developed using synchrotron radiation as the illuminating source. The present report describes the initial results in human subjects. The findings indicate that transvenous coronary angiograms can be acquired in this manner. Further refinements in the x-ray imaging system are expected to result in increased x-ray fluence and improved image quality.

The Crystal Ball detector has been used at the DORIS II storage ring at DESY to study the reaction e+e−→e+e−γ*γ*→e+e−γγ, where X is a narrow resonance with mass between 100 and 3000 MeV. Formation of π0, η, and η’ mesons is observed, and the following meson partial widths are obtained: Γπ0Γ0→γγ=7.7±0.5±0.5 eV, Γη−γγ=0.514±0.017±0.035 keV, and Γη’→γγ=4.7±0.5±0.5 keV. No other narrow resonances are observed, and upper limits are given for the product ΓX→γγBX→γγ. .AE

- Abstract
The cross section for elastic electron scattering from an enriched Ca48 target is measured in comparison with one for Ca40. The angular dependence of the ratio of these two cross sections is fitted by a curve calculated by phase shift analysis. The best fitting values for the changes in the parameters defining the charge distributions of these nuclei lead to the conclusion that the half-way radius increases by 4.1% and the skin thickness decreases by 12.4%, under the assumption that the charge distribution of both nuclei follow the so- called parabolic Fermi model., Prepared in cooperation with General Motors Corp., Warren, Mich. - Abstract
In recent years NaI(Tl) total absorption counters (TASC and TANC varieties) have been described in numerous publications. Following the period of major technical developments of these detectors these counters have been applied to actual experiments in high energy physics. It is the purpose of this article to show how the total absorption technique fits into the fabric of modern high energy physics. Only the most recent applications is discussed.

- Abstract
Investigations into the production of mechanical oscillations in aluminum cylinders by high energy electrons reveal that the mechanism of excitation is a 'hot rod model' in which the shower deposits heat in the bar and the hot zone expands causing mechanical vibrations. The conversion efficiency of this process is evaluated in these experiments. The hot rod mechanism does not present a significant background for gravitational events from cosmic rays in room temperature gravitational radiation detectors. - Abstract
Using high resolution semiconductor detectors, a study was made of the large K-ionization cross sections of atoms over a wide range of atomic numbers (Z = 29 to Z = 83) and of incident electron energies (E = 150 MeV to 900 MeV). For the higher Z elements (Z > 60) the L X-ray cross sections were also measured over the incident electron energy range. Ratios of the relative intensities of various distinct lines were determined and compared to recent low energy work. The results of the K-ionization experiment are compared to the recent relativistic calculations of H. Kolbenstvedt. A search for nuclear gamma-rays produced by high energy electron scattering was also undertaken in this work. No nuclear gamma-ray lines were detected. The null results were explained by recent theoretical calculations. (Author), Sponsored in part by National Science Foundation, Washington, D. C.

- Abstract
In the past two years the authors have reported on the properties of large NaI(T1) crystals as total absorption spectrometers for electrons and gamma-rays in the range 0.1 to 14 GeV. They have recently made similar measurements on a NaI(T1) spectrometer which is both larger than any that they have used before, and assembled in a different way. - Abstract
Mechanical, or sound, vibrations were observed in ceramic piezoelectric disks of lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) struck by high energy electrons. Four 1/2 inch thick disks of PZT were used. A wide band, low impedence, common base configuration amplifier was used to examine the induced vibrations. Since the most prominent resonant frequencies of the disks were near 40 kHz (radial mode) and 158 kHz (compressional mode) most of the studies were concentrated on these modes. Electrons of energy 1.00 BeV and 0.20 BeV were used in pulses, each lasting about 1.0 microsecond and contained 10,000 to 1,000,000 to electrons. The cross section of the incident 1.00 BeV beam was about 3 mm x 3 mm. (Author)

- Abstract
The properties of a large NaI(T1) detector as a total absorption detector for pions at GeV energies are reported. These observations are supplemented by measurements on the three-dimensional distribution of deposited energy in a large absorber of metallic tin by 8 GeV pions. The latter data are compared with existing Monte Carlo calculations of the nucleon-meson cascade and their application to the design of total absorption detectors with large containment factors is discussed. - Abstract
Experimental results are presented on the scattering of 250 MeV electrons by Ca40, Ca42, Ca44, Ca48, and Ti48, and of 500 MeV electrons by Ca40 and Ca48. An analysis is made in terms of a phenomenological three-parameter shape, and a new, more accurate charge distribution is obtained for Ca40. The experiments also lead to a detailed exploration of the radial dependence of the differences in charge distributions of the various isotopes. Implications for nuclear theory are discussed. Comparison is made with the results of other electron scattering and of muonic x-ray experiments. The latter comparison permits an independent determination of an upper limit on the muon electromagnetic radius. (Author), Prepared in cooperation with General Motors Corp., Warren, Mich. - Abstract
The paper reports a new and successful demonstration of the use of total absorption shower detectors for electrons and gamma-rays in the GeV energy range. Such detectors have the following attractive properties: (a) 100 per cent detection efficiency, (b) good energy resolution and (c) large dynamic range. Moreover, there is virtually no upper limit to the energy detectable by this means because the size of the detector varies only logarithmically with the energy of the incident electron or gamma-ray. - Abstract
Measurements are reported of the inelastic scattering of electrons from the mirror nuclei of tritium and helium - 3. The ratio of the quasi-elastic electron-tritium and electron-helium -3 cross sections was measured to a precision of about 3% for values of the square of the four-momentum transfer, equal to 2.5 and 4.6/F sq. Detailed measurements of the shape of the entire inelastic spectra and estimates of the total inelastic cross sections were made. While these data are primarily intended to furnish additional experimental information which will be of use in determining the structure of the three-body nuclei, it is also pointed out that such data are a possible source of information on the structure of the neutron. - Abstract
Measurements of the ratio of the total inelastic electrondeuteron cross section to the elastic electron-proton cross section were made to an accuracy of about 3% for values of the square of the four-momentum transfer in the range 1.5 to 7.5/F-sq. These ratios were analyzed in terms of the form factors of the neutron using the 'area method', and it is concluded that the corrections necessary to the simple sum rule given by Jankus are approximately equal in magnitude to those encountered in the use of the more familiar 'peak method'. A detailed comparison was made between the shapes of the observed inelastic electrondeuteron cross sections as a function of the scattered electron momentum and the shapes expected according to a theoretical treatment due to Durand. - Abstract
The doubly-magic nucleus of Ca(40) has been investigated by the electron scattering technique at an incident energy of 250 MeV. The elastic scattering behavior has been resolved from the inelastic scattering and absolute data on cross sections have been obtained for both types of events. In the case of the elastic scattering the first and second diffraction features have been observed and measured. It has been possible to make a comparison of the elastic data with theoretical calculations based on a phase shift analysis for certain assumed models of the nuclear charge density distribution. The combination of such an analysis with the present data, and also with earlier data on the same nucleus, permits the determination of the radius and skin thickness of the Ca(40) nucleus with a precision greater than has been attainable heretofore. An investigation of the dependence of the density distribution on a third parameter indicates that a Fermi distribution, or models close to this type, are required to fit the experimental data. A Fermi radial charge density distribution with radius c =3.60 F, and skin thickness t = 2.50 F fits the data extremely well. - Abstract
Absolute measurements of the elastic electron-proton cross section have been made with a precision of about 4% for values of the square of the four-momentum transfer, q to the second power, in the range 6.0 to 30.0 F to the minus second power and for electron scattering angles in the range 45 to 145 degrees. To within the experimental errors, it is found that the charge and magnetic form factors of the proton have a common dependence on q to the second power, when normalized to unity at 1 to the second power = 0, and than an accurate representation of the form factor behavior and that of the cross sections themselves can be given in terms of a three-pole approximation to the dispersion theory of nucleon form factors. The experimental results of elastic scattering of electrons are given. The structure of protons and neutrons is studied using the form factor given by relativity theory, and the scattering amplitude of scattered electrons. Two mirror nuclei, Helium-3 and Hydrogen-3, are studied as examples of the three-body problem. The shape of the charge distribution of the nucleus of Ca40 is discussed.

- Abstract
The electromagnetic form factors of the neutron have been measured in the q-squared range from 1.0 to 30.01/F sq. It is found that for values of q-squared greater than about 6.01/F sq the square of the neutron's charge form factor is consistent with zero to within an error of the order of 5% in the existing theoretical cross section. For values of q-squared less than 6.01/F sq it is concluded that meaningful values of the neutron form factors cannot be given until the necessary corrections to the theory are better understood. The present results on the neutron form factors are combined with recent measurements of the proton form factors to provide experimental determinations of the isotopic nucleon form factors. It is found that the omega and phi mesons provide a good approximation to the observed isoscalar form factors but that it is difficult to understand the behavior of the isovector form factors in terms of the rho meson alone.
