To advance the institutionalization of service-learning (SL) in Catholic universities, the launch of the UNISERVITATE program was carried out in 2020. Fine-grained and mainly reddish color, compact and slightly breccious and vesicular pyrometamorphic rocks (natural clinker) are associated to the spontaneous combustion of coal seams of the Cerrejón Formation exploited by Carbones del Cerrejón Limited in La Guajira Peninsula (Caribbean Region of Colombia). These rocks constitute remaining inorganic materials derived from claystones, mudstones and sandstones originally associated with the coal and are essentially a complex mixture of various amorphous and crystalline inorganic constituents. In this paper, a petrographic characterization of natural clinker, aswell as the application of the X-ray diffraction (Rietveld method) by mean of quantitative analysis of its mineral phases were carried out. The RIQAS program was used for the refinement of X ray powder diffraction profiles, analyzing the importance of using the correct isostructural models for each of the existing phases, which were obtained from the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD). The results obtained in this investigation show that the Rietveld method can be used as a powerful tool in the quantitative analysis of phases in polycrystalline samples, which has been a traditional problem in geology.

- Abstract
In this paper, a parallel cartesian fixed grid mesh generator for structural and fluid dynamics problems is presented. The method uses the boundary representation of a body and produces a set of equal sized cells which are classified in three different types according to its location with respect to the body. Cells are inside, outside or intersecting the boundary of the body. This classification is made by knowing the number of nodes of a cell that are inside body. That process is accomplished very efficiently as the nodes can be classified in batch. Once boundary cells are identified, its geometry is approximated by the convex hull of the nodes inside the body and the intersection points of the boundary against the cell edges. This paper presents the basics of the Fixed Grid Meshing algorithm, followed by some domain decomposition modifications and the data structures required for its parallel implementation. A set of examples and a brief discussion on the possibility of applying this algorithm together with other approaches is presented. © 2015 World Scientific Publishing Company.

- Abstract
In industry, some parts are prone to failures or their design is simply sub-optimal. In those critical situations, one would like to be able to make changes to the part, making it lighter or improving its mechanical resistance. The problem of as-built parts is that the original computer-aided design (CAD) model is not available or is lost. To optimize them, a reverse engineering process is necessary to capture the shape and topology of the original design. This paper describes how to capture the original design geometry using a semi-automated reverse engineering process based on measurement provided by an optical 3D sensor. Following this reverse engineering process, a Fixed Grid Finite Element method and evolutionary algorithms are used to find the optimum shape that will minimize stress and weight. Several examples of industrial parts are presented. These examples show the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed method in an industrial scenario. © 2007 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Natural zeolites filling amygdales and veins in tertiary basaltic host rocks on the Isle of Skye (NW Scotland) have been studied in some detail by transmitted light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The zeolites and associated minerals so identified in order of their relative time of formation from early to late were nontronite, amorphous silica phases, carbonate phases, chabazite, phillipsite, wairakite, thomsonite, analcime, natrolite and stilbite-type minerals. Zeolite formation in the Skye basalts began with low Si/Al ratio Na zeolites and a gradual increase in Ca content and Si/Al ratio, ending up as Ca zeolites.

This study presents the behavior of the morbidity in the four municipalities in area of influence during the construction of the hydroelectric project Porce II, as a part of the social and environmental management developed by EPM (Medellín Public Services Company) through the system of epidemiological surveillance of Porce II. The morbidity profile denotes the presence of problems associated to deficient economic and social conditions like bacterial and parasitic diseases that affect the respiratory and digestive system and the skin. In addition, the pioneer experience of this system of epidemiological surveillance generated an important contribution in the design and realization of surveillances systems on public health that allow the diagnosis of high-priority problems in the health of the populations in the influence areas during the construction of hydroelectric macro projects.

Cytokines play a fundamental role in anti-mycobaterial immune response. TNFα and IFNγ are associated with macrophage activation and increased anti mycobacterial capacities, while IL-10 has opposite effects. Recent evidence indicates that polymorphisms in different regions of the genes control cytokine production. It has been reported that mononuclear cells from patients with TB stimulated with mycobacterial antigens have decreased IFN gamma with augmented IL-10 production. The aim of this study was to determine the association of TNFα, IFNγ and IL-10 gene polymorphisms with TB and to correlate them with cytokine production by mononuclear cells in response to specific and non-specific stimuli in TB patients and healthy controls. Cytokine gene polymorphisms were detected by PCR-SSP in 33 patients with pulmonary TB and 35 healthy controls. Mononuclear cell cultures were stimulated for 24 and 72 hours with PPD, LPS and PHA. Cytokine levels in supernatants were measured by ELISA. No association between the different cytokine gene polymorphisms and TB has been observed. In vitro, PPD, LPS and PHA significantly increased the levels of the three cytokines in both groups studied; however, there were no differences between patients and controls. Although there were major individual variations in response to the various stimuli, only IL-10(-1082) polymorphism correlates with IL-10 concentration after PPD and LPS stimulation. These results suggest that the cytokine gene polymorphisms are not associated with susceptibility to TB; but it remains to determine whether they may be associated with different clinical forms of TB such as Miliary and Pleural TB. Background: The Wound Care Collaborative Community (WCCC) assesses shortcomings and unmet needs in wound care by partnering with key stakeholders, such as the National Institutes of Health, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), industry leaders, and expert health care providers and researchers, to advance the study of wound healing. Through this work, the WCCC has identified a few key barriers to innovation in wound care. The WCCC aims to accelerate the development of science-based, patient-centered solutions and address public policy challenges related to ensuring patients receive early access to innovative treatment options., Objective: To develop consensus recommendations that would address current deficiencies in wound care and promote improved innovation and patient access with an expert panel discussion based on both the work conducted within the WCCC and the existing evidence. These recommendations include the voices of the at-large, US-based wound care community., Methods: In May 2024, a multi-panel summit with 65 leading voices in clinical practice, academia, industry, and the FDA convened in person in Orlando, Florida. Thirty-two participants with backgrounds in clinical practice, surgery, industry, academia, and research took part in panel discussions. Following the panel meeting, the group corresponded via email and a formal survey process to create consensus recommendations, with the ultimate goal of identifying and overcoming barriers to innovation in wound care., Results: A total of 32 experts convened during the 1-day summit, each representing key stakeholders. Five panel discussions took place to discuss the obstacles to innovation, including alternative primary and co-primary endpoints, generating and reporting evidence, real-world evidence in policy decision-making, and the appropriate standard of care in wound management. From these discussions, 12 consensus statements were generated. The statements, their proportion of agreement or disagreement, and summary comments are presented in the order they appeared at the presentation. Overall, greater than or equal to 85% agreement was received on all statements., Conclusion: The consensus recommendations promote and encourage a standardized path forward to established, consistent metrics that facilitate innovation and quality assessment, improving patient access to advancements in healing.

- Abstract
Control of Salmonella in pig/pork production is important to protect public health because pork is one of the main sources of human infection. Moreover, antimicrobial use in pig farms should be kept low to minimize development and transmission of antimicrobial resistance. This pilot study evaluated the productivity and Salmonella seroprevalence in pigs administered organic acids (OA) compared to pigs given growth promoters in one farm in Antioquia, Colombia. Two groups each consisting of 60 pigs of 6-weeks of age were studied for 4 months. One group was provided feed and water with OA (Selko pH
® and Selacid® ), whereas the other group (control) received antimicrobial growth promoters according to routine feeding practices (tylosin and zinc bacitracin). Blood samples were taken three times (T1-T3) and pigs were weighted five times to calculate daily weight gain (DWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Initially when the pigs were 6 weeks old (T1), the Salmonella seroprevalence was 1.7% in both groups. When the pigs were 11 weeks old (T2), the seroprevalence was significantly lower in pigs provided OA compared to the control group (19 vs. 47%, P < 0.001), whereas when the pigs were 23 weeks old (T3), the seroprevalence did not differ between the groups (62 vs. 77%; P = 0.075). The cumulative DWG was significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group (713 vs. 667 g/day; P < 0.001). The cumulative FCR did not differ between groups (2.80 vs. 2.77; P = 0.144). The pilot study indicates that cleaning the water pipes and administrating OA improve productivity in pigs and delay exposure to Salmonella spp. when compared with growth promoters. - Abstract
The Electroencephalography (EEG)-based motor imagery (MI) paradigm is one of the most studied technologies for Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) development. Still, the low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) poses a challenge when constructing EEG-based BCI systems. Moreover, the non-stationary and nonlinear signal issues, the low-spatial data resolution, and the inter- and intra-subject variability hamper the extraction of discriminant features. Indeed, subjects with poor motor skills have difficulties in practicing MI tasks against low SNR scenarios. Here, we propose a subject-dependent preprocessing approach that includes the well-known Surface Laplacian Filtering and Independent Component Analysis algorithms to remove signal artifacts based on the MI performance. In addition, power- and phase-based functional connectivity measures are studied to extract relevant and interpretable patterns and identify subjects of inefficency. As a result, our proposal, Subject-dependent Artifact Removal (SD-AR), improves the MI classification performance in subjects with poor motor skills. Consequently, electrooculography and volume-conduction EEG artifacts are mitigated within a functional connectivity feature-extraction strategy, which favors the classification performance of a straightforward linear classifier.

- Abstract
Sleep-related infant deaths, including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), are the number one cause of death in infants between 28 days and one year of life. Nearly half of families experiencing a sleep-related infant death in Kansas were involved with the Department of Children and Families Child Protective Services (CPS), making CPS staff a priority for safe sleep training. This study assessed the impact of the two-day Kansas Infant Death and SIDS (KIDS) Network Safe Sleep Instructor (SSI) train-the-trainer program on CPS staffs' knowledge of the American Academy of Pediatrics safe sleep recommendations. Training was attended by 43 participants, 27 (63%) of whom were employed by CPS. CPS staff had significantly lower baseline knowledge on the 10-item pretest ( t = 3.33, p = 0.002), but both CPS and other attendees showed significant improvement by posttest ( t = 8.53, p < 0.001 and t = 4.44, p < 0.001, respectively). Following SSI certification, CPS SSIs provided more safe sleep training to professionals than other SSIs (1051 vs. 165, respectively), and both groups of SSIs were able to significantly increase the knowledge of their trainees. Overall, the KIDS Network SSI training was successful. The innovative partnership with CPS allowed for provision of training to a group not historically targeted for safe sleep education.

- Abstract
Drug resistance has become a major problem in the treatment of tuberculosis. Pulmonary resection in combination with chemotherapy appears to be an effective measure for the treatment of multi-drug resistant pulmonary tuberculosis. A retrospective review was performed of the medical and laboratory findings of 28 patients with multi-drug resistant tuberculosis who underwent pulmonary resection for pulmonary tuberculosis between January 1990 and December 2000 at La Maria Hospital, Medellín. Twenty-one of them had medical therapy before surgery; 14 patients underwent upper lobectomy and 10 patients pneumonectomy). The AFB negative sputum conversion rate was 88.9% (25/27) after surgery, during an average of 6 weeks. Bacteriological relapses were confirmed in 6 of 27, 4 of these 6 had AFB negative sputum. Twenty-eight patients had medical therapy after surgery. For selected patients, pulmonary resection in combination with chemotherapy should be considered an effective measure for treatment of multi-drug resistant pulmonary tuberculosis.
