We present Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC and WFC3/UVIS imaging for a sample of 50 low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies in the $\sim$10$^{15}$ M$_{\odot}$ Perseus cluster, which were originally identified in ground-based imaging. We measure the structural properties of these galaxies and estimate the total number of globular clusters (GCs) they host. Around half of our sample galaxies meet the strict definition of an ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG), while the others are UDG-like but are either somewhat more compact or slightly brighter. A small number of galaxies reveal systems with many tens of GCs, rivalling some of the richest GC systems known around UDGs in the Coma cluster. We find the sizes of rich GC systems, in terms of their half-number radii, extending to $\sim$1.2 times the half-light radii of their host galaxy on average. The mean colours of the GC systems are the same, within the uncertainties, as those of their host galaxy stars. This suggests that GCs and galaxy field stars may have formed at the same epoch from the same enriched gas. It may also indicate a significant contribution from disrupted GCs to the stellar component of the host galaxy as might be expected in the 'failed galaxy' formation scenario for UDGs., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present \textsc{Mathpop}, a novel method to infer the globular cluster (GC) counts in ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) and low-surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs). Many known UDGs have a surprisingly high ratio of GC number to surface brightness. However, standard methods to infer GC counts in UDGs face various challenges, such as photometric measurement uncertainties, GC membership uncertainties, and assumptions about the GC luminosity functions (GCLFs). \textsc{Mathpop} tackles these challenges using the mark-dependent thinned point process, enabling joint inference of the spatial and magnitude distributions of GCs. In doing so, \textsc{Mathpop} allows us to infer and quantify the uncertainties in both GC counts and GCLFs with minimal assumptions. As a precursor to \textsc{Mathpop}, we also address the data uncertainties coming from the selection process of GC candidates: we obtain probabilistic GC candidates instead of the traditional binary classification based on the color--magnitude diagram. We apply \textsc{Mathpop} to 40 LSBGs in the Perseus cluster using GC catalogs from a \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} imaging program. We then compare our results to those from an independent study using the standard method. We further calibrate and validate our approach through extensive simulations. Our approach reveals two LSBGs having GCLF turnover points much brighter than the canonical value with Bayes' factor being $\sim4.5$ and $\sim2.5$, respectively. An additional crude maximum-likelihood estimation shows that their GCLF TO points are approximately $0.9$~mag and $1.1$~mag brighter than the canonical value, with $p$-value $\sim 10^{-8}$ and $\sim 10^{-5}$, respectively., Comment: 8 figures, 5 tables; submitted to ApJ, comments are welcomed

The photometric colors of globular clusters (GCs) act as effective proxies for metallicity, since all normally used optical/IR color indices exhibit a nonlinear but monotonic relation between their integrated color and their metallicity. One color index, (g - z) or (F475W - F850LP), has been spectroscopically calibrated in several studies, providing leverage to define color-to-metallicity conversions for other indices. In this paper, building on the work of arXiv:2307.01863, we study the GC color-metallicity relation in more detail by testing the dependence of the relations on different suites of stellar models and different assumed GC ages. Though noticeable differences between models exist, we find that the net effect on the derived GCS metallicity distributions is small., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures. Accepted for publication in AJ

We have developed a novel method of determining 2D radial density profiles for astronomical systems of discrete objects using Voronoi tessellations. This Voronoi-based method was tested against the standard annulus-based method on 5 simulated systems of objects, following known Hubble density profiles of varying parameters and sizes. It was found that the Voronoi-based method returned radial density fits with lower uncertainties on the fitting parameters across all 5 systems compared to the annulus-based method. The Voronoi-based method also consistently returned more accurate estimates of the total number of objects in each system than the annulus-based method, and this accuracy increased with increasing system size. Finally, the Voronoi-based method was applied to two observed globular cluster systems around brightest cluster galaxies ESO 444-G046 and 2MASX J13272961-3123237 and the results were compared to previous results for these galaxies obtained with the annulus-based method. Again, it was found that the Voronoi-based method returned fits with lower uncertainties on the fitting parameters, and the total number of globular clusters returned are within errors of the annulus-based method estimates, however also with lower uncertainties., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables

In almost any study involving optical/NIR photometry, understanding the completeness of detection and recovery is an essential part of the work. The recovery fraction is, in general, a function of several variables including magnitude, color, background sky noise, and crowding. We explore how completeness can be modelled, {with the use of artificial-star tests,} in a way that includes all of these parameters \emph{simultaneously} within a neural network (NN) framework. The method is able to manage common issues including asymmetric completeness functions and the bilinear dependence of the detection limit on color index. We test the method with two sample HST (Hubble Space Telescope) datasets: the first involves photometry of the star cluster population around the giant Perseus galaxy NGC 1275, and the second involves the halo-star population in the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 3377. The NN-based method achieves a classification accuracy of $>$\,94\%, and produces results entirely consistent with more traditional techniques for determining completeness. Additional advantages of the method are that none of the issues arising from binning of the data are present, and that a recovery probability can be assigned to every individual star in the real photometry. CDG-1 is a tight grouping of four likely globular clusters in the Perseus cluster, and a candidate dark galaxy with little or no diffuse light. Here we provide new constraints on the luminosity of any underlying stellar emission, using HST/UVIS F200LP imaging. No diffuse emission is detected, with a 2$\sigma$ upper limit of F200LP>28.1 mag/arcsec$^2$ on the 5'' scale of CDG-1. This surface brightness limit corresponds to a 2$\sigma$ lower limit of >0.5 for the fraction of the total luminosity that is in the form of globular clusters. The most likely alternative, although improbable, is that CDG-1 is a chance grouping of four globular clusters in the halo of the Perseus galaxy IC312., Comment: To appear in Research Notes of the American Astronomical Society

Single photon emitters (SPEs) hosted in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) are essential elementary building blocks for enabling future on-chip quantum photonic technologies that operate at room temperature. However, fundamental challenges, such as managing non-radiative decay, competing incoherent processes, as well as engineering difficulties in achieving deterministic placement and scaling of the emitters, limit their full potential. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate large-area arrays of plasmonic nanoresonators for Purcell-induced site-controlled SPEs by engineering emitter-cavity coupling and enhancing radiative emission at room temperature. The plasmonic nanoresonator architecture consists of gold-coated silicon pillars capped with an alumina spacer layer, enabling a 10-fold local field enhancement in the emission band of native hBN defects. Confocal photoluminescence and second-order autocorrelation measurements show bright SPEs with sub-30 meV bandwidth and a saturated emission rate of more than 3.8 million counts per second. We measure a Purcell factor of 4.9, enabling average SPE lifetimes of 480 ps, a five-fold reduction as compared to emission from gold-free devices, along with an overall SPE yield of 21%. Density functional theory calculations further reveal the beneficial role of an alumina spacer between defected hBN and gold, as an insulating layer can mitigate the electronic broadening of emission from defects proximal to gold. Deep JWST imaging of the giant galaxy cluster Abell 2744, at redshift $z=0.308$, is used to explore the features of its rich population of globular clusters (GCs), building on our initial survey of the system (Harris & Reina-Campos 2023). We use the photometry of more than $10,000$ GCs over a three-magnitude range to construct the GC luminosity function (GCLF) and color distribution (CDF). These results now specifically account for photometric incompleteness as a function of location relative to the five giant galaxies that dominate the gravitational potential of A2744. The total GC population in A2744 is estimated at $N_{\rm GC} \geq 1.1 \times 10^5$, consistent with its high total mass. We also directly compare the observed distributions with theoretical predictions for GC populations drawn from the recent EMP-Pathfinder simulations (Reina-Campos et al. 2022), viewed at the same 3.5 Gyr lookback time as the cluster. The simulations match the observations well, with the only notable disagreement being that the simulations predict larger numbers of GCs at high metallicity formed after $z\simeq2$ than are seen in the data., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures; submitted to ApJ

Observations of caustic-crossing galaxies at redshift $0.72$ and the number density of events is greater around substructureand the number density of events is greater around substructures, and (ii) negative imaging regime where $\beta<2$. We study the particular case of seven microlensing events found by HST in the Dragon arc (at z=0.725). We find that a population of supergiant stars with a steep LF with $\beta=2.55$ fits the distribution of these events. We identify a small region of high density of microlensing events, and interpret it as evidence of a possible invisible substructure, for which we derive a mass of $\sim 1.3 \times 10^8\,\Msun$ (within its Einstein radius)., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures

The advent of JWST (the James Webb Space Telescope) now allows entire star cluster populations to be imaged in galaxies at cosmologically significant redshifts, bringing with it the need to apply K-corrections to their magnitudes and colour indices. Since the stellar populations within star clusters can be well approximated by a single age and metallicity, their spectral energy distributions are very different from those of galaxies or supernovae, and their K-corrections behave differently. We derive the photometric K-corrections versus redshift for model star clusters that cover a wide range of ages and metallicities, illustrating the results particularly for the broadband filters on the HST/ACS and the JWST/NIRCam cameras that are most commonly being used for imaging of populations of star clusters in distant galaxies. Low-symmetry van der Waals materials have enabled strong confinement of mid-infrared light through hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) at the nanoscale. Yet, the bottleneck persists in manipulating the intrinsic polaritonic dispersion to drive further progress in phonon-polaritonics. Here, we present a thermomechanical strategy to manipulate the HPhPs in $\alpha$-MoO$_3$ using high pressure and temperature treatment. The hot pressing engineers the stoichiometry of $\alpha$-MoO$_3$ by controllably introducing oxygen vacancy defects (OVDs), which cause a semiconductor-to-semimetal transition. Our density functional theory and finite-difference time-domain results, combined with experimental studies show that the OVDs induce a metastable metallic state by reducing the bandgap while modifying the intrinsic dielectric permittivity of $\alpha$-MoO$_3$. Photo-induced force microscopy confirms an average dielectric permittivity tunability of $|\Delta\varepsilon/\varepsilon|\approx0.35$ within a Reststrahlen band of $\alpha$-MoO$_3$, resulting in drastic shifts in the HPhP dispersion. The polariton lifetimes for pristine and hot-pressed flakes were measured as $0.92 \pm 0.06$ and $0.86 \pm 0.11$ ps, respectively, exhibiting a loss of only 7%, while the group velocity exhibited an increase of $38.8 \pm 0.2$%. The OVDs in $\alpha$-MoO$_3$ provide a low-loss platform that enables active tuning of mid-infrared HPhPs and have a profound impact on applications in super-resolution imaging, nanoscale thermal manipulation, boosted molecular sensing, and on-chip photonic circuits., Comment: 42 pages, 13 figures, supporting information

JWST imaging of the rich galaxy cluster Abell 2744 at $z=0.308$ has been used by the UNCOVER team (Bezanson et al. 2022) to construct mosaic images in the NIRCAM filters. The exceptionally deep images in the ($F115W$, $F150W$, $F200W$) bands reveal a large population of unresolved pointlike sources across the field, the vast majority of which are globular clusters (GCs). To the limits of our photometry, more than 10,000 such objects were measured, most of which are in the halos of the five largest A2744 galaxies but which also include GCs around some satellite galaxies and throughout the IntraCluster Medium. Their luminosity function follows a lognormal shape, with the data reaching to within one magnitude of the classic GCLF turnover point. The colour index ($F115W-F200W$) in particular covers a range of $0.5$ mag, clearly resolving the expected internal spread of GC metallicities. The estimated GC masses are systematically higher than in present-day galaxies, consistent with a large, normal GC population seen at a $3.5~$Gyr earlier stage of dynamical evolution. Lastly, the spatial distribution of the bluer (more metal-poor) GCs resembles the gravitational lensing map of the cluster, consistent with recent theoretical suggestions., Comment: 13 pages and 13 figures. We present Hubble Space Telescope photometry in optical (F475X) and near-infrared (F110W) bands of the globular cluster (GC) systems of the inner halos of a sample of 15 massive elliptical galaxies. The targets are selected from the volume-limited MASSIVE survey, and chosen to sample a range of environments from sparsely populated groups to BCGs in dense clusters. We also present a quantitative model of the relation between (F475X - F110W) colour and cluster metallicity [M/H], using simulated GCs. Because much of the GC population in such galaxies is built up through accretion, the metallicity distribution of the GC systems might be expected to vary with galaxy environment. The photometry is used to create a completeness-corrected metallicity distribution for each galaxy in the sample, and to fit a double Gaussian curve to each histogram in order to model the two standard red and blue subpopulations. Finally, the properties of the GC metallicity distribution are correlated against galaxy environment. We find that almost no GCS properties and host galaxy environmental properties are correlated, with the exception of a weak but consistent correlation between blue fraction and nth-nearest neighbour surface density. The results suggest that the systemic properties of the GCS, at least in the inner to mid-halo regions, are influenced more strongly by the local environment at early times, rather than by the environmental properties we see today., Comment: 21 pages, 18 figures. Galaxy stellar mass is known to be monotonically related to the size of the galaxy's globular cluster (GC) population for Milky Way sized and larger galaxies. However, the relation becomes ambiguous for dwarf galaxies, where there is some evidence for a downturn in GC population size at low galaxy masses. Smaller dwarfs are increasingly likely to have no GCs, and these zeros cannot be easily incorporated into linear models. We introduce the Hierarchical ERrors-in-variables Bayesian lognormAL hurdle (HERBAL) model to represent the relationship between dwarf galaxies and their GC populations, and apply it to the sample of Local Group galaxies where the luminosity range coverage is maximal. This bimodal model accurately represents the two populations of dwarf galaxies: those that have GCs and those that do not. Our model thoroughly accounts for all uncertainties, including measurement uncertainty, uncertainty in luminosity to stellar mass conversions, and intrinsic scatter. The hierarchical nature of our Bayesian model also allows us to estimate galaxy masses and individual mass-to-light ratios from luminosity data within the model. We find that 50% of galaxies are expected to host globular cluster populations at a stellar mass of $\log_{10}(M_*)=6.996$, and that the expected mass of GC populations remains linear down to the smallest galaxies. Our hierarchical model recovers an accurate estimate of the Milky Way stellar mass. Under our assumed error model, we find a non-zero intrinsic scatter of $0.59_{-0.21}^{+0.30}$ (95% credible interval) that should be accounted for in future models., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures. The relation between the total mass contained in the globular clusters of a galaxy and the mass of its dark matter halo has been found observationally to be nearly linear over five decades of mass. However, the high-mass end of this relation is not well determined from previous data and shows large scatter. We analyze the globular cluster systems (GCSs) of a homogeneous sample of 11 brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) through DOLPHOT photometry of their deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images in the F814W filter. We standardize the definition of $M_{GCS}$, the total GCS mass, by using the GC total population within a limiting radius of $0.1 R_{virial}$, while the dark-matter halo mass $M_h$ is determined from the weak-lensing calibration of $M_h$ versus $M_{bary}$. When these 11 BCGs are added to the previously studied homogeneous catalogue of Virgo member galaxies, a total value for $\eta = M_{GCS}/M_h$ is found to be $(3.0\pm1.8_{internal})\times10^{-5}$, slightly higher than previous estimates but with much reduced uncertainty. Perhaps more importantly, the results suggest that the relation continues to have a near-linear shape at the highest galaxy masses, strongly reinforcing the conclusion that accreted GCs make a major contribution to the GC populations at high galaxy mass., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Context: Secure Multiparty Computation (MPC) refers to a family of cryptographic techniques where mutually untrusting parties may compute functions of their private inputs while revealing only the function output. Inquiry: It can be hard to program MPCs correctly and efficiently using existing languages and frameworks, especially when they require coordinating disparate computational roles. How can we make this easier? Approach: We present Symphony, a new functional programming language for MPCs among two or more parties. Symphony starts from the single-instruction, multiple-data (SIMD) semantics of prior MPC languages, in which each party carries out symmetric responsibilities, and generalizes it using constructs that can coordinate many parties. Symphony introduces **first-class shares** and **first-class party sets** to provide unmatched language-level expressive power with high efficiency. Knowledge: Developing a core formal language called $\lambda$-Symphony, we prove that the intuitive, generalized SIMD view of a program coincides with its actual distributed semantics. Thus the programmer can reason about her programs by reading them from top to bottom, even though in reality the program runs in a coordinated fashion, distributed across many machines. We implemented a prototype interpreter for Symphony leveraging multiple cryptographic backends. With it we wrote a variety of MPC programs, finding that Symphony can express optimized protocols that other languages cannot, and that in general Symphony programs operate efficiently. We perform simulations of star cluster formation to investigate the morphological evolution of embedded star clusters in the earliest stages of their evolution. We conduct our simulations with Torch, which uses the AMUSE framework to couple state-of-the-art stellar dynamics to star formation, radiation, stellar winds, and hydrodynamics in FLASH. We simulate a suite of $10^4$ M$_{\odot}$ clouds at 0.0683 pc resolution for $\sim$ 2 Myr after the onset of star formation, with virial parameters $\alpha$ = 0.8, 2.0, 4.0 and different random samplings of the stellar initial mass function and prescriptions for primordial binaries. Our simulations result in a population of embedded clusters with realistic morphologies (sizes, densities, and ellipticities) that reproduce the known trend of clouds with higher initial $\alpha$ having lower star formation efficiencies. Our key results are as follows: (1) Cluster mass growth is not monotonic, and clusters can lose up to half of their mass while they are embedded. (2) Cluster morphology is not correlated with cluster mass and changes over $\sim$ 0.01 Myr timescales. (3) The morphology of an embedded cluster is not indicative of its long-term evolution but only of its recent history: radius and ellipticity increase sharply when a cluster accretes stars. (4) The dynamical evolution of very young embedded clusters with masses $\lesssim$ 1000 M$_{\odot}$ is dominated by the overall gravitational potential of the star-forming region rather than by internal dynamical processes such as two- or few-body relaxation., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, to be published in MNRAS

Hubble Space Telescope imaging for 26 giant early-type galaxies, all drawn from the MAST archive, is used to carry out photometry of their surrounding globular cluster (GC) systems. Most of these targets are Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) and their distances range from 24 to 210 Mpc. The catalogs of photometry, completed with DOLPHOT, are publicly available. The GC color indices are converted to [Fe/H] through a combination of 12-Gyr SSP (Single Stellar Population) models and direct spectroscopic calibration of the fiducial color index (F475W-F850LP). All the resulting metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) can be accurately matched by bimodal Gaussian functions. The GC systems in all the galaxies also exhibit shallow metallicity gradients with projected galactocentric distance that average $Z \sim R_{gc}^{-0.3}$. Several parameters of the MDFs including the means, dispersions, and blue/red fractions are summarized. Perhaps the most interesting new result is the trend of blue/red GC fraction with galaxy mass, which connects with predictions from recent simulations of GC formation within hierarchical assembly of large galaxies. The observed trend reveals two major transition stages: for low-mass galaxies, the metal-rich (red) GC fraction $f(red)$ increases steadily with galaxy mass, until halo mass $M_h \simeq 3 \times 10^{12} M_{\odot}$. Above this point, more than half the metal-poor (blue) GCs come from accreted satellites and $f(red)$ starts declining. But above a still higher transition point near $M_h \simeq 10^{14} M_{\odot}$, the data hint that $f(red)$ may start to increase again because the metal-rich GCs also become dominated by accreted systems., Comment: In press for Astrophysical Journal Supplement

We introduce a new method for detecting ultra-diffuse galaxies by searching for over-densities in intergalactic globular cluster populations. Our approach is based on an application of the log-Gaussian Cox process, which is a commonly used model in the spatial statistics literature but rarely used in astronomy. This method is applied to the globular cluster data obtained from the PIPER survey, a \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} imaging program targeting the Perseus cluster. We successfully detect all confirmed ultra-diffuse galaxies with known globular cluster populations in the survey. We also identify a potential galaxy that has no detected diffuse stellar content. Preliminary analysis shows that it is unlikely to be merely an accidental clump of globular clusters or other objects. If confirmed, this system would be the first of its kind. Simulations are used to assess how the physical parameters of the globular cluster systems within ultra-diffuse galaxies affect their detectability using our method. We quantify the correlation of the detection probability with the total number of globular clusters in the galaxy and the anti-correlation with increasing half-number radius of the globular cluster system. Current observational evidence suggests that all large galaxies contain globular clusters (GCs), while the smallest galaxies do not. Over what galaxy mass range does the transition from GCs to no GCs occur? We investigate this question using galaxies in the Local Group, nearby dwarf galaxies, and galaxies in the Virgo Cluster Survey. We consider four types of statistical models: (1) logistic regression to model the probability that a galaxy of stellar mass $M_{\star}$ has any number of GCs; (2) Poisson regression to model the number of GCs versus $M_{\star}$, (3) linear regression to model the relation between GC system mass ($\log{M_{gcs}}$) and host galaxy mass ($\log{M_{\star}}$), and (4) a Bayesian lognormal hurdle model of the GC system mass as a function of galaxy stellar mass for the entire data sample. From the logistic regression, we find that the 50% probability point for a galaxy to contain GCs is $M_{\star}=10^{6.8}M_{\odot}$. From post-fit diagnostics, we find that Poisson regression is an inappropriate description of the data. Ultimately, we find that the Bayesian lognormal hurdle model, which is able to describe how the mass of the GC system varies with $M_{\star}$ even in the presence of many galaxies with no GCs, is the most appropriate model over the range of our data. The fraction of stars in binary systems within star clusters is important for their evolution, but what proportion of binaries form by dynamical processes after initial stellar accretion remains unknown. In previous work, we showed that dynamical interactions alone produced too few low-mass binaries compared to observations. We therefore implement an initial population of binaries in the coupled MHD and direct N-body star cluster formation code Torch. We compare simulations with, and without, initial binary populations and follow the dynamical evolution of the binary population in both sets of simulations, finding that both dynamical formation and destruction of binaries take place. Even in the first few million years of star formation, we find that an initial population of binaries is needed at all masses to reproduce observed binary fractions for binaries with mass ratios above the $q \geq 0.1$ detection limit. Our simulations also indicate that dynamical interactions in the presence of gas during cluster formation modify the initial distributions towards binaries with smaller primary masses, larger mass ratios, smaller semi-major axes and larger eccentricities. Systems formed dynamically do not have the same properties as the initial systems, and systems formed dynamically in the presence of an initial population of binaries differ from those formed in simulations with single stars only. Large galaxies may contain an "atmosphere" of hot interstellar X-ray gas, and the temperature and radial density profile of this gas can be used to measure the total mass of the galaxy contained within a given radius r. We use this technique for 102 early-type galaxies (ETGs) with stellar masses M_* > 10^10 M_Sun, to evaluate the mass fraction of dark matter (DM) within the fiducial radius r = 5 r_e, denoted f_5 = f_{DM}(5r_e). On average, these systems have a median f_5 = 0.8 - 0.9 with a typical galaxy-to-galaxy scatter +-0.15. Comparisons with mass estimates made through the alternative techniques of satellite dynamics (e.g. velocity distributions of globular clusters, planetary nebulae, satellite dwarfs) as well as strong lensing show encouraging consistency over the same range of stellar mass. We find that many of the disk galaxies (S0/SA0/SB0) have a significantly higher mean $f_5$ than do the pure ellipticals, by Delta f_5 = 0.1. We suggest that this higher level may be a consequence of sparse stellar haloes and quieter histories with fewer major episodes of feedback or mergers. Comparisons are made with the Magneticum Pathfinder suite of simulations for both normal and centrally dominant "Brightest Cluster" galaxies. Though the observed data exhibit somewhat larger scatter at a given galaxy mass than do the simulations, the mean level of DM mass fraction for all classes of galaxies is in good first-order agreement with the simulations. Lastly, we find that the group galaxies with stellar masses near M_* ~ 10^11 M_Sun have relatively more outliers at low $f_5$ than in other mass ranges, possibly the result of especially effective AGN feedback in that mass range leading to expansion of their dark matter halos., Comment: In press for the Astrophysical Journal

Computer simulations can provide mechanistic insight into ionic liquids (ILs) and predict the properties of experimentally unrealized ion combinations. However, ILs suffer from a particularly large disparity in the time scales of atomistic and ensemble motion. Coarse-grained models are therefore used in place of costly atomistic simulations, allowing simulation of longer time scales and larger systems. Nevertheless, constructing the many-body potential of mean force that defines the structure and dynamics of a coarse-grained system can be complicated and computationally intensive. Machine learning shows great promise for the key coupled challenges of dimensionality reduction and learning the potential of mean force. To improve the coarse-graining of ILs, we present a neural network model trained on all-atom classical molecular dynamics simulations. The potential of mean force is expressed as two jointly-trained neural network interatomic potentials that learn the coupled short-range and the many-body long range molecular interactions. These interatomic potentials treat temperature as an explicit input variable to capture the temperature dependence of the potential of mean force. The model reproduces structural quantities with high fidelity, outperforms the temperature-independent baseline at capturing dynamics, generalizes to unseen temperatures, and incurs low simulation cost., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 2 supplementary material pages

In database-as-a-service platforms, automated verification of query equivalence helps eliminate redundant computation in the form of overlapping sub-queries. Researchers have proposed two pragmatic techniques to tackle this problem. The first approach consists of reducing the queries to algebraic expressions and proving their equivalence using an algebraic theory. The limitations of this technique are threefold. It cannot prove the equivalence of queries with significant differences in the attributes of their relational operators. It does not support certain widely-used SQL features. Its verification procedure is computationally intensive. The second approach transforms this problem to a constraint satisfaction problem and leverages a general-purpose solver to determine query equivalence. This technique consists of deriving the symbolic representation of the queries and proving their equivalence by determining the query containment relationship between the symbolic expressions. While the latter approach addresses all the limitations of the former technique, it only proves the equivalence of queries under set semantics. However, in practice, database applications use bag semantics. In this paper, we introduce a novel symbolic approach for proving query equivalence under bag semantics. We transform the problem of proving query equivalence under bag semantics to that of proving the existence of a bijective, identity map between tuples returned by the queries on all valid inputs. We implement this symbolic approach in SPES and demonstrate that SPES proves the equivalence of a larger set of query pairs (95/232) under bag semantics compared to the state-of-the-art tools based on algebraic (30/232) and symbolic approaches (67/232) under set and bag semantics, respectively. Furthermore, SPES is 3X faster than the symbolic tool that proves equivalence under set semantics.

We describe the goals and first results of a Program for Imaging of the PERseus cluster of galaxies (PIPER). The first phase of the program builds on imaging of fields obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ACS/WFC and WFC3/UVIS cameras. Our PIPER target fields with HST include major early-type galaxies including the active central giant NGC 1275; known Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies; and the Intracluster Medium. The resulting two-color photometry in F475W and F814W reaches deep enough to resolve and measure the globular cluster (GC) populations in the Perseus member galaxies. Here we present initial results for eight pairs of outer fields that confirm the presence of Intergalactic GCs (IGCs) in fields as distant as 740 kpc from the Perseus center (40\% of the virial radius of the cluster). Roughly 90% of these IGCs are identifiably blue (metal-poor) but there is a clear trace of a red (metal-rich) component as well, even at these very remote distances., Comment: In press for The Astrophysical Journal

The nature of the Sombrero galaxy (M 104 = NGC 4594) has remained elusive despite many observational studies at a variety of wavelengths. Here we present Hubble Space Telescope imaging of two fields at $\sim$16 and 33 kpc along the minor axis to examine stellar metallicity gradients in the extended spheroid. We use this imaging, extending more than 2 mag below the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB), in combination with artificial star tests to forward model observed color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), measuring metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) at different radii along the minor axis. An important and unexpected result is that the halo of the Sombrero is strikingly metal-rich: even the outer field, located at $\sim$17 effective radii of the bulge, has a median metallicity [Z/H]$\sim$-0.15 and the fraction of stars with [Z/H]<-1.0 is negligible. This is unprecedented among massive galaxy halos studied to date, even among giant ellipticals. We find significant radial metallicity gradients, characterized by an increase in the fraction of metal-poor stars with radius and a gradient in median metallicity of $\sim$-0.01 dex/kpc. The density profile is well fit by power laws with slopes that exhibit a dependence on metallicity, with flatter slopes for more metal-poor stars. We discuss our results in the context of recent stellar MDF studies of other nearby galaxies and potential formation scenarios for the Sombrero galaxy., Comment: ApJ accepted

We compare the empirical relationships between the mass of a galaxy's globular system M_GCS, the gas mass in the hot X-ray atmosphere M_X within a fiducial radius of 5 r_e, the total gravitational mass M_grav within 5 r_e, and lastly the total halo mass M_h calibrated from weak lensing. We use a sample of 45 early-type galaxies (ETGs) for which both GCS and X-ray data are available; all the galaxies in our sample are relatively high-mass ones with M_h > 10^12 M_sun. We find that M_X ~ M_h^1.0, similar to the previously known scaling relation M_GCS ~ M_h^1.0. Both components scale much more steeply than the more well known dependence of total stellar mass M_star ~ M_h^0.3 for luminous galaxies. These results strengthen previous suggestions that feedback had little effect on formation of the globular cluster system. The current data are also used to measure the relative mass fractions of baryonic matter and dark matter (DM) within 5 r_e. We find a strikingly uniform mean of = 0.83 with few outliers and an rms scatter of +-0.07. Relational properties describe relationships that hold over multiple executions of one or more programs, such as functional equivalence. Conventional approaches for automatically verifying such properties typically rely on syntax-based, heuristic strategies for finding synchronization points among the input programs. These synchronization points are then annotated with appropriate relational invariants to complete the proof. However, when suboptimal synchronization points are chosen the required invariants can be complicated or even inexpressible in the target theory. In this work, we propose a novel approach to verifying relational properties. This approach searches for synchronization points and synthesizes relational invariants simultaneously. Specifically, the approach uses synthesized invariants as a guide for finding proper synchronization points that lead to a complete proof. We implemented our approach as a tool named PEQUOD, which targets Java Virtual Machine (JVM) bytecode. We evaluated PEQUOD by using it to solve verification challenges drawn from the from the research literature and by verifying properties of student-submitted solutions to online challenge problems. We present $\sim$0.1" resolution ($\sim$10 pc) ALMA observations of a molecular cloud identified in the merging Antennae galaxies with the potential to form a globular cluster, nicknamed the ``Firecracker.' Since star formation has not yet begun at an appreciable level, this cloud provides an example of what the birth environment of a globular cluster may have looked like before stars form and disrupt the natal conditions. Using emission from $^{12}$CO(2-1), $^{12}$CO(3-2), $^{13}$CO(2-1), HCN(4-3), and HCO$^+$(4-3), we are able to resolve the cloud's structure and find that it has a characteristic radius of 22 pc and a mass of 1--9$\times10^6 M_\odot$. We also constrain the abundance ratios of $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO and H$_2$/\twelveCO. Based on the calculated mass, we determine that the commonly used CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor varies spatially, with average values in the range $X_{CO}=(0.12-1.1)\times10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$ (K km s$^{-1}$)$^{-1}$. We demonstrate that if the cloud is bound (as is circumstantially suggested by its bright, compact morphology), an external pressure of $P/k > 10^8$ K cm$^{-3}$ is required. This would be consistent with theoretical expectations that globular cluster formation requires high pressure environments. The position-velocity diagram of the cloud and its surrounding material suggests that this pressure may be produced by the collision of filaments. The radial profile of the column density can be fit with both a Gaussian and Bonnor-Ebert profile. The relative line strengths of HCN and HCO$^+$ in this region suggest that these molecular lines can be used as tracers for the evolutionary stage of a cluster., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, Accepted to ApJ 2019 March 4

A major hallmark of neural development is the oscillatory movement of nuclei between the apical and basal surfaces of the neuroepithelium during the process of interkinetic nuclear migration (IKNM). Here, we employ long-term, rapid lightsheet and two-photon imaging of zebrafish retinas $in~vivo$ during early development to uncover the physical processes that govern the behavior of nuclei during IKNM. These images allow the capture of reliable tracks of nuclear movements and division during early retinogenesis for many tightly packed nuclei. These tracks are then used to create and test a theory of retinal IKNM as a diffusive process across a nuclear concentration gradient generated by the addition of new nuclei at the apical surface. The analysis reveals the role of nuclear packing at the apical surface on the migration dynamics of nuclei, provides a robust quantitative explanation for the distribution of nuclei across the retina, and may have implications for stochastic fate choice in this system., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, data available on request
