2. Emulsification potential of milk fat globule membrane material microfiltrated from buttermilk whey.

Abstract

The emulsification potential of milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) material obtained from buttermilk whey was investigated. A microfiltration technique was applied to recover MFGM material from the whey, a side-stream of the cheese-making process from the buttermilk. During the preparation of O/W emulsions, a constant ratio of protein and oil was maintained, and homogenised at 0/2, 3/2, 9/2, and 15/2 MPa pressures using a twostep homogeniser. Emulsions prepared with buttermilk powder (BMP) and microfiltrated buttermilk whey (MFBMW) showed similar microstructure and rheological properties. The particle distribution and mean diameter (D3,2) were similar for both materials. However, no cream separation was observed for emulsion prepared with MFBMW during 8-day storage. Despite the differences in the composition, MFBMW showed good creaming stability, and similar emulsifying properties to BMP. Abstract

Traditionally, spices are important components used for preparation of everyday menu, especially for Bangladeshi. In this connection, Spices Research Center under Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) has been releasing new spices varieties but there is dearth of research on the adoption of these newly released spices varieties. Therefore, the present study aimed at to examine the extent of adoption of spices cultivation technology by the growers in Shibganj upazila under Bogura district. Data were collected from 90 household heads selected following proportionate random using a structured interview schedule. Major cultivating spices varieties which are noticed in the study area are BARI piaz1, BARI ada2, BARI holud5. Under the three major spices variety, 43.3 percent area was covered by small scale spices cultivation, 42.2 percent by medium scale and 14.5 percent was covered by large scale area of spices cultivation. Findings revealed that huge majority (80.0%) of the respondents had medium adoption of BARI piaz1 whereas almost all (93.3%) of them had medium adoption of BARI ada2. On the other hand, more than half (53.3%) of the respondents had low adoption of BARI holud5 whereas 40.0 percent of them had medium and 6.7 percent had high adoption of the same. Vital perceived benefits that attracted the respondents in spices cultivation were higher price, yield and quality of the technologies than those of previous. BARI holud5 was found more profitable (BCR 1.7) than BARI piaz1 (BCR 1.3) and BARI ada2 (BCR 1.3). Respondent farmers' education, farm size, innovativeness, extension contact, knowledge on spices cultivation and annual family income showed significant and positive relationship with their adoption of spices technology. Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of different soil amendments and nitrogen levels on growth, yield and N uptake by rice (cv. BINA dhan10) under saline soil condition. Treatments consisted of three FYM and gypsum combinations in main plot viz. M1: gypsum @ 210 kg/ha, M2: FYM 3 t/ha + gypsum 140 kg/ha and M3: FYM 6 t/ha. Three nitrogen treatments assigned in sub-plots viz. N1: 75 kg N/ha, N2: 100 kg N/ha and N3: 125 kg N/ha. The study revealed that the combination of FYM and gypsum with and N levels produced the maximum grain yield of rice (6.07 t/ha) under the treatment combinations of M1N3, i.e. gypsum @ 210 kg/ha along with 125 kg N/ha.

Abstract

In this paper, a hybrid DC microgrid consisting of a diesel generator with a rectifier, a solar photovoltaic (PV) system, and a battery energy storage system is presented in relation to an effective power management strategy and different control techniques are adopted to power electronic interfaces. The solar PV and battery energy storage systems are considered as the main sources of energy sources that supply the load demand on a daily basis whereas the diesel generator is used as a backup for the emergency operation of the microgrid. All system components are connected to a common DC bus through an appropriate power electronics devices (e.g., rectifier systems, DC/DC converter). Also a detailed sizing philosophy of all components along with the energy management strategy is proposed. Energy distribution pattern of each individual component has been conducted based on the monthly basis along with a power management algorithm. The power delivered by the solar PV system and diesel generator is controlled via DC-DC converterand excitation controllers which are designed based on a linearquadratic regulator (LQR) technique as as proportional integral (PI)controllers. The component level power distribution is investigatedusing these controllers under fluctuating load and solar irradiationconditions and comparative results are presented.

Abstract

The micellar properties of sodium glycodeoxycholate (NaGDC) and polyoxyethylene tert-octylphenyl ether (Triton X-100) and their binary combinations have been investigated using tensiometry and fluoresence techniques. The critical micelle concentrations of the micellar species were determined from surface tension and spectrofluorimetric methods. The CMC's of mixed micelles are found to be lower than the ideal values according to Clint's equation. The microenvironment of the micelles were explored from the viewpoint of aggregation characteristics and polarity index. The mean aggregation numbers were obtained from steady state quenching experiments. The values decreased with increasing mole-fraction of the bile salt in the co-micelle. The ratio of the first and third vibronic peaks (I1/I3) in a monomeric pyrene emission spectrum provided an estimate of the polarity index of the micelle interior. The results indicate that the pyrene solubilization site changes with the concentration of the micellar species and the hydrophobic character of the mixed agregates increases with the increase of NaGDC mole-fraction. The CMC's and composition of the mixed systems have been calculated following molecular thermodynamic approach. The calculated mole-fractions of NaGDC are lower than the analytical ones and the evaluated interaction parameter gives a measure of the synergism of the interacting amphiphiles.

26. SEARCHING FOR THE BEST FITTING DETERMINISTIC MODEL FOR INNOVATIVE GROWTH ANALYSIS AND FORECASTING OF RICE PRODUCTION IN BANGLADESH

Abstract

The study tried to find out appropriate models using seven contemporary model selection criteria that could best describe the growth pattern of rice production in Bangladesh and in its foil regions (former divisions) Chittagong, Dhaka. Khulna and Rajshahi during the time period 1973/74 to 2000/01. It appeared from the study that the best fitting model for rice production in the whole country and in Dhaka was the cubic model. For Chittagong the quadratic model was the best. It means that the assumption of constant annual rate of growth in percent that lies behind the use of exponential/compound model, which was very common to use in describing growth pattern, was not true for the growth pattern of rice production in the country as a whole and also in its two regions Dhaka and Chittagong. In other words, in these regions and in the country as a whole the growth rates were different over different time points. The variation of the growth rate in the country as a whole was 1.38 to 5.76 percent, in Dhaka -1.09 to 13.01 percent and in Chittagong 0.92 to 2.06 percent during the study period. In Khulna and Rajshahi regions the exponential/compound model seemed to be appropriate. The rice production in Khulna grew at the constant rate of 2.6 percent, on the average, per year and in Rajshahi at the rate of 3.3 percent throughout the study period. Five-year forecasts were also made for each of the four regions and for the country as a whole using the best fitted models.

Abstract

This study aims at estimating gross and net technical efficiencies using four alternative Cobb- Douglas stochastic production frontiers. This study reveals that production of wheat in Bangladesh is profitable and small farmers earned significantly higher yield and net returns per hectare than other fart groups. Technical efficiency scores estimated from different models vary from 46 percent to 99 percent and the maximum efficiency attained at the level 90-100 percent. Average gross technical efficiency varies from 86 to 89 percent whereas average net technical efficiency varies from 90 to 92 percent. This study also reveals that wheat output can be increased in the range 8-11 percent by using the existing resources and technology. It is obvious that environmental factors have positive impact on both production and technical efficiency. The development of advanced technology is the only option to increase wheat production in the long-run.

The voltage mode control (VMC) technique of switchmode converters has been widely used in renewable PV system applications. The feasibility of the current mode control (CMC) techniques in PV applications is also promising because of the irregular nature of the PV source. This paper presents a comparative assessment of the VMC and four different CMCs of switch-mode converters for photovoltaic (PV) applications. Voltage control, average current control, current programmed control, hysteretic current control and nonlinear career control methods are considered in this paper. The feasibility of these control techniques has been investigated considering the input fluctuations and load variations. Transient analysis, parameter sensitivity and harmonic analysis of PV systems have been analyzed as well. The performance of the above controllers as PV converter controller has been investigated and compared for the same input conditions and circuit parameters.

30. Control of a stand alone variable speed wind turbine with a permanent magnet synchronous generator

Abstract

A novel control strategy for the operation of a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based stand alone variable speed wind turbine is presented in this paper. The direct drive PMSG is connected to the load through a switch mode rectifier and a vector controlled pulse width modulated (PWM) IGBT-inverter. The generator side switch mode rectifier is controlled to achieve maximum power from the wind. The load side PWM inverter is using a relatively complex vector control scheme to control the amplitude and frequency of the inverter output voltage. As there is no grid in a stand-alone system, the output voltage has to be controlled in terms of amplitude and frequency. The stand alone control is featured with output voltage and frequency controller capable of handling variable load. A damp resistor controller is used to dissipate excess power during fault or over-generation. The potential excess of power will be dissipated in the damp resistor with the chopper control and the dc link voltage will be maintained. Extensive simulations have been performed using Matlab/Simpower. Simulation results show that the controllers can extract maximum power and regulate the voltage and frequency under varying load condition. The controller performs very well during dynamic and steady state condition.

31. A novel control strategy for a variable speed wind turbine with a permanent magnet synchronous generator

This paper presents a novel control strategy for the operation of a direct drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based stand alone variable speed wind turbine. The control strategy for the generator side converter with maximum power extraction is discussed. The stand alone control is featured with output voltage and frequency controller capable of handling variable load. The potential excess of power is dissipated in the damp resistor with the chopper control and the dc link voltage is maintained. Dynamic representation of dc bus and small signal analysis are presented. Simulation results show that the controllers can extract maximum power and regulate the voltage and frequency under varying wind and load conditions. The controller shows very good dynamic and steady state performance.

Abstract

An off-grid photovoltaic power system requires an energy storage system, especially batteries, for mitigation of variability and intermittency problems, and for assured service reliability and availability. The longevity and reliability of such batteries depend on the effectiveness of the charging system. This paper presents the modelling, simulation and hardware implementation of a four-stage switch-mode charger based on the single-ended primary inductance converter. The digital signal processor based controller implements algorithms for the system's power balance control, maximum power point tracking to improve charging speed and efficiency, four-stage optimal charging, and system's protection. The protection algorithm provides over-charge, over-discharge, over-temperature and short circuit protection capabilities. The proposed system has the following advantages: ability to continuously charge the batteries even at reduced solar irradiation, higher efficiency, and use of adaptive thermally compensated set points for optimum performance. Abstract

A range of radiation vulcanised natural rubber latex (RVNRL) films were prepared using various concentrations of aqueous extracts of mature Diospyros peregrina fruit, which acted as a cross-linking agent. The surface of the RVNRL films exhibited an aggregated morphology of the rubber hydrocarbon with increasing roughness due to increasing fruit extract contents in the latex. An improvement in tensile strength, tensile modulus, and storage modulus of RVNRL films was observed with the addition of fruit extracts compared to the control film due to their cross-linking effect.The glass transition (Tg) temperature of all the RVNRL films was found to be at around -61.5°C. The films were also observed to be thermally stable up to 325°C, while the maximum decomposition temperature appeared at around 375°C. The incorporation of fruit extracts further revealed a significant influence on increasing the crystallinity, gel content, and physical cross-link density of the RVNRL films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The tensile strength (TS) and elastic modulus (ES) of non-irradiated (thermally treated) and irradiated Polypropylene (PP) - styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) composites were studied. The content of SBR (mass %) on PP and radiation dose play an important role on tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of PP-SBR composites. Tensile strength (TS) decreased markedly on increasing the SBR content on PP and even on exposing to radiation. The elastic modulus (EM) of PP-SBR composite has a tendency to increase with radiation dose and aging time but decreases with SBR loading. The synchronisation is realised by controlling the power electronic interface of the wind energy systems rather than the classical diesel engine synchronisation scheme. The power sharing between the diesel and wind systems is achieved by a modified power-frequency droop control method. Abstract

A review study was done by searching literature through PubMed. Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is a life altering disease pathogenesis of which are not yet clearly known likewise its management protocol has not been established. Treatment of longstanding Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is empirical and of limited efficacy. This disease may lead to dreadful squeal which may need amputation for their management and few of these patients may even develop suicidal tendency. Patient with Reflex sympathetic dystrophy usually present late. It was found that the clinical presentation of RSD are too much variable, although different modalities of treatment are used either alone or in combination, the outcomes are often unpredictable and of variable efficacy. Understanding of the treatment modalities and proper selection of treatment option are essential for best outcome. Preventive measure does play a role in management of these patients. Option of treatment includes pharmacological method, sympathetic nervous system interruption, use of calcitonin and bisphosphonate. More study is required to find out the mechanism that triggers the pain and other clinical manifestation so that a standardized protocol for its management can be developed [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

48. Assessment of heavy metals contamination and human health risk in shrimp collected from different farms and rivers at Khulna-Satkhira region, Bangladesh.

Abstract

This study is aimed to assess the heavy metals contamination and health risk in Shrimp ( Macrobrachium rosenbergii and Penaeus monodon ) collected from Khulna-Satkhira region in Bangladesh. The results showed that the Pb concentrations (0.52-1.16 mg/kg) in all shrimp samples of farms were higher than the recommended limit. The Cd levels (0.05-0.13 mg/kg) in all samples and Cr levels in all farms except tissue content at Satkhira farm were higher than the permissible limits. The individual concentration of Pb, Cd, and Cr between shrimp tissue and shell in all rivers and farms were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) were estimated to assess the non-carcinogenic health risks. Shrimp samples from all locations under the current study were found to be safe for consumption, the possibility of health risk associated with non-carcinogenic effect is very low for continuous consumption for 30 years.

Abstract

We present here a reliable and sensitive method for the determination of acidic opines such as meso-alanopine, beta-alanopine, tauropine and strombine in biological samples. Interfering primary amino acids were eliminated by reaction with o-phthalaldehyde, and the derivatized compounds were passed through Sep-Pak Plus PS-1 cartridges. The acidic opines were recovered by flushing the cartridges with water, then determined by high performance liquid chromatography after a second derivatization with phenylisothiocyanate. All 4 acidic opines were detected within 30 min. This method ensured good separation and guaranteed almost full recovery of all acidic opines. This method was applied to analyze opines in marine animals and to test whether opines are metabolized in the livers of the rat and fish.

Abstract

Three cardenolide glycosides, calotropin (1), frugoside (2), and 4'-O-beta-D-glucopyranosylfrugoside (3), were obtained as the cytotoxic principles of "akond mul" (roots of Calotropis gigantea L.). The cytotoxicity of these compounds against various cell lines of human and mouse origin was tested. They showed similar cell line selectivity to those of cardiac glycosides such as digoxin and ouabain: they are toxic to cell lines of human origin, but not to those from mouse at 2 micrograms/ml.
